Northern Arizona University’s scenic mountain campus provides a picturesque backdrop to study, work and play.

NAU, in partnership with YouVisit , has produced an interactive, digital tour of the Flagstaff campus that showcases the university, academics, student life and Lumberjack culture.

David Dollins , director of Recruitment and Orientation, said the tour allows the university to reach students and families in a new and innovative way. “While we incorporate pictures of campus in our materials and presentations, the virtual tour is an immersive experience that engages students through photography as well as 360-degree panoramas and videos,” he said. “Not to mention we have a lot of students interested in NAU from far-away states such as Hawaii and Alaska, where it may be cost-prohibitive to travel to campus.”

The tour includes 20 featured stops that are a mix of social, academic and natural spaces. Since the virtual tour launched in July, more than 6,000 people from 49 states and 24 countries have taken it.

Dollins said the best part of the tour is that it allows everyone access to NAU’s Flagstaff campus. “The tour is not intended just for undergraduate students,” he said. “It can also engage alumni, international students, graduate students and others interested in seeing what our beautiful campus looks like.”

Things To Do in and Around Northern Arizona University

Northern Arizona University is located in Flagstaff, Arizona . The campus sits alongside the famous Route 66 and has a stunning view of the San Francisco Peaks. The campus first opened in 1899 as a teacher’s school and has since expanded into a larger and broader campus that features a variety of degrees, programs and certificates. The campus of Northern Arizona University, as well as the surrounding town, provides many things to do and see.

On campus, you’ll find locations such as:

1899 bar & grill.

This restaurant is located on the edge of the north campus. The building it is in is actually one of the first built on campus, giving it some historical significance. The 1899 offers appetizers, lunch, dinner and happy hour. Though the menu may look expensive, the restaurant accepts dining dollars, making it the fanciest place to dine on campus.

The 1899 Bar & Grill is also a valuable resource to Northern Arizona University’s Hotel and Restaurant program, as many students work as cooks, waiters and staff there.

Old Main is also located in the scenic northern part of the university. As the name suggests, it was the first building on campus back when Northern Arizona University was Northern Arizona Normal School. With its brown brick buildings, it is a very scenic spot; no place on campus is more beautiful than Old Main when there is snow on the ground.

Old Main also houses the Clara M. Lovett Art Museum , which is a place worth checking out if you love art and want to support local artists.

Morton Hall

Since it is a student dorm , Morton Hall is not accessible to the public. However, it is one of the more aesthetically appealing dorms. Like the 1899 and Old Main, Morton Hall is located on the north side of Northern Arizona University and is therefore made of brown stone.

Many places have a supposedly haunted location, and this remains true for the university; Morton Hall is rumored to be haunted , with its notable ghosts being those of a former student who was found in the stairwell and a baby found in the maintenance room. Though these hauntings are up for debate, what makes Morton unsettling is how it is filled with mirrors at every corner.

This spot in the Union offers different kinds of sushi, including imitation crab for those who don’t like raw fish. The sushi here is made fresh daily and includes maki, nigiri and temaki, among other kinds. Though sushi isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Wild Blue is a spot worth checking out if you are a sushi lover. Sadly, they do not accept meal transfers. However, they will accept dining dollars and other forms of payment.

If the Hotspot is the main eatery for the north side of campus, the DuB is the main one for the south side. Though tastes may vary, some agree that the DuB has better food. Outside, there is a Starbucks, a Subway and The Coupe , which sells chicken wings. Inside, there are many places to eat, including the Smokehouse & Grill, which serves excellent barbecue and several dishes called “simple servings” for those who have any dietary restrictions.

There are many great spots to visit off-campus and around Flagstaff, too, including:

The toasted owl cafe.

The Toasted Owl Cafe is a restaurant located in downtown Flagstaff. It is open seven days a week, excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas. The restaurant serves classic American breakfast foods such as pancakes, bacon and fried eggs. It also offers omelets and Mexican-style breakfasts, such as tamales, burritos and tacos. Lunch items include sandwiches and burgers. The menu makes sure to include vegan and gluten-free dishes for those with dietary restrictions.

The restaurant has indoor seating and dog-friendly outdoor seating as well. Be aware though — it is first come, first serve, and the restaurant can get very crowded.

Brightside Bookshop

Brightside Bookshop is also located downtown and, as the name implies, is a bookshop. It is independently owned and puts local authors on display. The store has a wide variety of books, including fiction, nonfiction, essays, poetry and a children’s section. If you can’t find what you’re looking for inside the store, you can always order it online.

Flagstaff Public Library

If you aren’t an Arizona or Coconino County resident, you can still get a library card using your dorm address. The library is a great resource to use, especially if you’re taking literature classes; you can save money on books by borrowing them from the library. In general, a library card is a must-have even if your major has nothing to do with books. It is located downtown and so it is in a convenient location.

Riordan Mansion

The Riordan Mansion is one of Flagstaff’s historical locations, as well as an Arizona State Park. It was first built in 1904 by the Riordan brothers, two men who managed the influential Arizona Timber and Lumber Company. The brothers lived in the house with their families, hence its large size.

The mansion is very well-preserved and offers a step into history. It is also an example of the Arts and Crafts architectural style. Because of this, the Riordan Mansion is a must-see for history lovers and architecture lovers.

• Lowell Observatory

The Lowell Observatory is another of Flagstaff’s historical sites: Pluto was discovered here by a man named Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. The Observatory is still in use, reflecting Flagstaff’s status as a dark sky city. The Lowell Observatory offers tours and also has a great gift shop. This location is worth a visit if you love history, astronomy or both.

Bookman’s is a used bookstore that buys and sells books, along with music CDs and tapes, video games and instruments. The store offers credit or cash in exchange for these used items, which can be used at the Bookman’s cafe. Notably, this store was in the news in 2020 for returning a signed “ Star Wars ” record to Mark Hamill. The Flagstaff Bookman’s is located near Sprouts and Target, so you can check it out while on a grocery run.

Vice President Kamala Harris to visit NAU Tuesday

Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to visit Northern Arizona University's Flagstaff campus Tuesday as part of her “Fight For Our Freedoms College Tour.”

She wants to encourage young people to act on issues that disproportionately affect them, like reproductive rights and gun safety.

Harris is scheduled to land at the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport around 11 a.m. before heading to the university for a moderated conversation with students. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona is also expected to speak.

The event is ticketed and sold out.

Harris doesn’t have any other Arizona events scheduled and is expected to leave for Washington, D.C. this afternoon.

Several roads and parking lots will be closed around campus in anticipation of the event, specifically Knoles Drive from University Avenue to McCreary Drive and Riordan Road from South Riordan Ranch Street to Knoles Drive.

Northern Arizona University to open new hospitality school at Mesa Gateway Airport

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Tourism is big business in Arizona as our state grows, and to meet that need, Northern Arizona University is now expanding to the Valley with a brand-new hospitality school.

“We really think it’s critical that we provide this kind of quality training in an area that really needs it,” said Galen Collins, associate dean of the W.A. Franke College of Business.

The new school, Mesa Workforce Development Center (MWDC), will be built on a 360-acre lot at Skybridge near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

The school is an extension of their School of Hotel and Restaurant Management and hopes to help expand and grow the hospitality industry in the East Valley.

“Many of the hotels are still suffering from labor shortages. Restaurants it’s a bit worse. So, that’s an issue that we need to address. Also, another issue is that a lot of people that are now working in the hospitality industry are new and don’t have the experience,” said Collins.

Construction on the school is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Once completed, the center will serve as an educational space, with classrooms and teaching labs, including a kitchen, beverage bar, and sensory lab, and as a community gathering space with a restaurant and a coffee shop serving the public.

“Students can get their full 4-year degree here in hotel and restaurant management or hospitality leadership at this location,” Collin said.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

This group health insurance provides group coverage to students who are uninsured, need a less expensive alternative, or need an Arizona provider network.

Primary care is covered at Medical Services with a $15 co-pay for each office visit and $10 copay for lab. As a specialty service, Physical Therapy has a $25 copay.

Telemedicine visits are now subject to the same copay rates as in-person visits.

Insurance plan eligibility Accordion Closed

The following groups of students are eligible for coverage:

• are taking at least six units
• have a consortium agreement to take courses at a qualified college with an overall credit hour total of at least six units
• are in a co-op program
• Undergraduate seniors may enroll with less than six units if they are in their last semester to achieve their final graduation requirements and had the insurance coverage in the prior semester.
• Graduate students, if they are enrolled in a graduate degree or certificate program and are taking at least three credit hours or one dissertation/thesis hour
• have applied to a degree program and be taking at least six transferable units
• enrolled in a certificate program
• area full-time student taking at least nine units
• Graduate Assistants or Associates who are officially hired with a signed and filed notice of appointment and taking at least six units of graduate credit
• Post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, or visiting professors
• All international students, regardless of his or her fitting into one of the above classifications, and regardless of the number of units being taken, are automatically enrolled in the plan. Students who are eligible for or are enrolled under Medicare are not eligible to enroll under the plan.
• Students who are enrolled as an online only student are not eligible for the UnitedHealthCare Student Health Plan.

Correspondence courses do not fulfill the eligibility requirement. If it is discovered that this eligibility requirement has not been met, our only obligation is to refund premium, minus any claims paid.

• $25 copay for one routine eye exam per year.  Routine Eye Exams include refraction and glaucoma testing.

• $3,000 out-of-network for individuals

Log on to LOUIE and click on “Purchase Student Health Plan/Insurance” on the self service page. Or, email [email protected] and request the insurance be added for you to your account. Include  your name, ID#, request the insurance be added and  specify the term for which you want the insurance.  CHS staff will add the charge to your account.
