Explore The Iconic Palm Springs Windmills
Captivating Palm Springs Windmill Tours
Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Windmills stand tall and proud, casting their shadows against the backdrop of sprawling desert landscapes. These iconic wind turbines have become an emblem of renewable energy and a must-visit attraction for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. As you wander through fields of spinning giants, you’ll notice how these towering structures have become an iconic symbol of the Coachella Valley. Their picturesque presence has made them popular subjects for artists, photographers, and filmmakers, further enhancing their charm and allure. The best way to explore the windmills is through the Palm Springs Windmill Tours .
A Glimpse into the Past
The Desert Power and Water Company, established in 1914, erected several wind turbines to generate electricity for local communities. However, due to technological limitations and the availability of cheaper power sources, this early attempt at commercial wind power was not successful.
It wasn’t until 1982 that the modern era of wind power began in Palm Springs. The installation of more giant and more efficient wind turbines led to a significant increase in wind energy production. Today, the area is home to one of the largest wind turbine farms in the United States, with over 3,000 turbines generating clean, renewable energy.
The Palm Springs windmills have become an iconic symbol of the region, attracting tourists and photographers alike. They stand tall against the scenic backdrop of the desert landscape and continue to play a crucial role in generating sustainable energy for Southern California.
A Look Into The Future
As technology advances, older wind turbines are being replaced with more efficient and larger models. This trend is likely to continue, leading to an expansion of the windmill farms in Palm Springs. Newer turbines have higher capacities, taller towers, and longer blades, enabling them to harness more wind energy and generate electricity at a lower cost.
Wind power will increasingly play a crucial role in the energy grid. The windmills in Palm Springs can provide clean and reliable electricity to support the growing demand for renewable energy. Improved grid infrastructure and advancements in energy storage technologies will enhance the integration and stability of wind power in the region.

Does this tour accommodate wheelchairs? And do they have a lift to get in the van?
I did not see a lift to get into the van, and the paths were all gravel and dirt that would be hard to push a wheelchair on.

***This review is for the viewing of the windmills from the 10 Fwy only*** Over this past weekend, my eldest daughter and I took a self drive-through tour of the Palm Springs windmill from the 10 Fwy. Every time I drive to the Palm Springs area, I am just amazed by the massive size of the windmills and the beautiful panoramic view of them from a far. I was thinking how long does it take to build one of them windmills and for that many windmills to exist, it must have taken them years to get them all in place. Maybe one of these days, I will take the opportunity to participate in one of the actual tours to get a history of the windmills. For the time being, thank you for the showcase of the windmills for our viewing during our drive to and from Palm Springs area.

We took the older version of this tour in 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, it's better now. Tom Spiglanin, the director of education at Palm Springs Windmill Tours, had created a much more evolved and thorough program. He was super communicative and helpful from booking, on the day of our tour booking before we even arrived, and of course throughout our tour. Such amazing, personal service from start to finish. He loves what he does and has a passion for the wind farm and technology. Even if I was only mildly interested in wind power, this would have been a great tour. But I have great interest and curiosity about the subject, and the Palm Springs farm in particular. So Tom's love and deep knowledge made the whole experience just the best for me. I'd do this tour again for sure.
One of my favorite tours and attractions in Palm Springs! I've driven by the windmills for years, and always wanted to know more and get close to them. Well, that's what this tour is all about. It's extremely personal, the guide is super friendly and knows a lot about the history of windmills in the valley, and knows what is happening today and into the future. It got me so excited about the future of wind and solar power. Plus you get to touch and get up real close and personal with these giant behemoths that soar above you like gentle giants. Just do it!
Paying for a self driving tour, that you can see for free from the highway, is CRAZY. These massive turbines are truly something great to admire, but no need to have to pay, the interstate view is fine with me.

Yes Jolanta - Great views all around...but what did your learn by ust driving by?
And now for something completely different! I never would have guessed I'd be bouncing around a Palm Springs wind farm in a plush golf cart listening to the soft whoosh-whoosh of 200 foot long turbine blades, yet, there I was, and whoosh they did. But more than that , I got a whole rundown on the history and legacy of the windmills that have dotted this area outside of Palm Springs since the late 1970's. Our guide Amir really knew his stuff and learning about this really interesting technology was fascinating for me. Ok, so if you have absolutely no interest in technology or engineering this might not be the thing for you. But if you do like this kind thing it's a great hour and a half of wind technology mixed with regional history and fun conversations:-).

Really interesting tour. We did the guided one ut I heard the self guided is much better.
After years of driving through the area and admiring the windmills, we finally asked ourselves "can you tour the area?" and discovered, yes you can! We did the self driving tour which was priced at $50 for the car. We got a timed ticket ahead of time and found the spot where you check in easily with GPS. Upon arrival the folks working were really nice and explained the route to us and provided us with a paper map. Inside the place where you check in, they have some information and photos on the walls, as well as a 15 minute informative video to kick off your tour. Then you get back into your car and start your drive! They have an app you download which provides some light audio commentary for each numbered stop. There are ten official stops on the tour which give you a decent background on the history of the windmills and energy in general. We completed the tour in about 45 minutes, which included the time we got out of the car to take photos at a couple of stops. Overall, we were glad that we came and enjoyed our tour. That said, $50 is a bit pricey for the ten stops and the audio commentary was interesting but not super in depth. If you're really interested in the windmills and want to get up close, then I'd recommend checking it out. If you don't care about the details and are just looking to kill time, I'm not sure this would be the best value for you.
What a hidden treasure that's in plain sight! Palm Springs Windmill Tours is information made interesting and meaningful. Our guide, Rich, was superb. No question was unreasonable, all were answered well and he had a personal and professional interest in wind generated power. Follow your GPS, it is off the beaten path, but on all asphalt roads. While the outside of the green building is plain, the inside has all the amenities. The displays are very interesting and the staff are very educated. I've been driving by the windmill farms (there are many various parcels and owners) for decades. But over these years I have failed to appreciate the change in technologies and the evolution of power - history in the making before my eyes. All of this is explained by our tour guide. It was also fascinating to hear and see the mitigation of the windmill technology. (As you can see in my pic, we stood directly under a windmill going about 75% of full power, and it was barely audible.) This was a far better experience than what I was expecting to see and learn, up close, regarding wind power. I'd recommend all to visit this location - you can't learn it all from Google!
A lot of windmills
Tall windmills, windy hair
We signed up for a tour with Tom on our way back from a trip to Palm Springs, and we had a blast! (Clever wind pun entirely unintentional...) My engineering and physics-minded companions loved talking about gears and fail-safes, and I enjoyed trying to think of ways around the apparently dozens of failure points that can allow these behemoths to shake themselves to pieces, with or without shrapnel -- who doesn't enjoy hearing about expensive stuff failing spectacularly because the smarty-pants engineers didn't think of one or two little things? We talked about the old days of windsurfing at the percolation ponds and what environmental conditions you need for a successful wind farm (besides the obvious requirement for not too much and not too little wind). Educational, as hands on as you want to be with the non-operational stuff, outside in the fresh air -- thumbs up all around. What you can see as you drive past tells you nothing about the history, operations, and politics around these giants. Highly recommend for engineers, potential future engineers, and climate activists.
One giant wind turbine, three tiny little people in front
Very interesting tour for everyone in our family, including our 2 teenagers! We saw and learned a lot in a short period of time. The guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Really great experience!
Great tour. I loved being able to learn so much about wind power in general. This is the only wind farm that has tours. San Gorgonio pass has the most wind coming through in all of the US. The tour was casual & informative. It started with a 15 minute video that talks about the history but also shows you up inside the base with a maintenance team. Then the guide took us out on a shaded golf cart to point out parts of the farm and history of the turbines. We felt it was worth the $50 per person.

The Windmills in Palm Springs: My Childhood Fascination
If you’ve ever driven to Palm Springs from the LA area, you know that there are some huge windmills dotting the hillside that seem to suddenly appear out of nowhere. I remember seeing these windmills as a kid driving out to visit my uncle. When I found out the windmills generated power? Mind blown! How was this even possible?
As a kid that grew up with NKOTB and Full House, you know that internet was not even a thing. Solar power and wind power were shiny and new concepts to me. I thought these windmills and the science behind them were like something out of the movie, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!” Now, if you don’t know what decade I’m talking about, you can just assume that I’m 21 😉
I suspect that the windmills are every bit as intriguing to kids today. My entire family was excited to get up close to the windmills and finally learn more about them. I was so happy to see they were still just as excited when we got through the tour.
How do I get a tour of the windmills?
Palm Springs Windmill Tours allows you to get up close and see the windmills. New in the era of COVID, you can now drive through the tour in your own car with an audio tour narrating and directing you where to go.
Just make a reservation for your car in one of the 15 minute time slots and you’ll be on your way. The tour is set up so that each car can stop at designated stops and get out to look up close. You will be reminded to allow the party ahead of you to finish up and move on to the next stop before you get out and take your turn. This is a tour that you can be confident will be COVID safe and socially distanced.
What makes the windmill tour entertaining?
Here are just some of the reasons we found the windmill self-driving tour entertaining:
Learning opportunities
There will be no shortage of learning on this tour. In fact, the very first thing we learned was that each blade is 125 feet long and weighs about 14,000 pounds! That is for EACH BLADE. When you stand next to one of these windmills, you can’t help but be in awe.
The tour contains 10 stops total with an additional 2 suggested stops after. During the tour, you will see and learn about the fails and wins on the way to developing the windmill technology we see along the freeway today. There are multiple wind turbine prototypes you will see spanning across the years as evidence of the process required to refine this technology.
Other things you will see include a solar farm, active wind turbine, and a view of the valley of windmills if you head over to the 12th suggested/optional stop.
Picture opportunities
There are so many fun picture ops while driving through the windmills. In fact, the guide that greeted us at the gate even gave us suggestions on a fun TikTok video we could make while in front of the active wind turbine!
My favorite pictures included:
- The field of windmills
- The breathtaking view of the windmills while parked atop a hill
- My daughter with “wings” in front of a fallen old windmill prototype
- My car parked in front of the windmills (how many people get to do that?!)
- And yes, even a a short video suggested by the guide 😉
Be sure to head to our Instagram and check us out @asocalwayoflife We share some of the fun pictures we got and placed stories in our “Palm Springs highlights.”
Trying a date shake at the Windmill Market
One of the very last suggested stops on the tour is a stop at Windmill Market for a date shake. There are many date farms in this valley and therefore delicious dates are found in the area. We stopped for a date shake at this little market and sat in the nice patio area. The shakes are absolutely delicious and perfect for a hot day!
Bragging rights!
If nothing else, taking a tour of the windmills in Palm Springs is a must do for the bragging rights! How many kids (or even adults) can say they’ve been up close to these beauties? I’m proud to be among the people that can say I finally went and found out what these windmills are all about now that I’m a whopping 21 years old 😉
Is the tour good for families?
I headed out with the entire crew and we were amazed by some of the facts that we learned about windmills and the power generated with them. Even if you have very little ones that do not completely understand the technology being described, I think that they will be amazed to learn things like how many homes just one of those windmills can provide power for.
You can even head to their website for some kid-friendly information about wind power before heading out! You can check it out HERE .

Treat Yourself to a Uniquely Greater Palm Springs Tour
Learning about energy, history and the “real” desert is anything but boring in Greater Palm Springs. Schedule one of these exclusive tours that are expertly led by knowledgeable guides. They promise to thrill with off-road adventures, journeys “inside” a towering energy grid and historic explorations of an 1800’s mine site. And, you can only experience these marvels on an exclusive tour!
See Windmills (Really) Close Up
Not long after the dinosaurs “welcome” you to the Coachella Valley along Interstate 10, another landmark signals your arrival in Greater Palm Springs. You are soon greeted by the more than 2,000 towering “ambassadors” that make up the wind-powered energy farms of the region. Even if you’ve never been to the area, you’ve probably seen these whirling giants in movies, most recently in the newest “A Star is Born.” Much better than marveling at the fascinating windmills as you pass at 70 mph is taking a Palm Springs Windmill Tour , the only tour with exclusive behind-the-gates access to the mysterious turbines. In fact, the two-hour tour includes extensive knowledge about the wind energy industry that dates back more than 130 years.
Tour-goers are oriented with interesting movies that show the daring technicians who maintain the windmills, scaling to heights of more than 350 feet and dangling on the edge of propellers. The in-room information continues outside with walks among the giants for up- close views, followed by an expertly guided bus trip that also includes visits to solar and natural gas facilities, high-up vistas of the wind farms and a stop at the famous Windmill Market for date shakes and samplings.
Mine History in Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park is filled with natural wonders and beauty, but its historical treasures are equally fascinating–especially when you can take an exclusive tour of one of the park’s most storied landmarks. In the late 1800s explorers, cattlemen and miners began venturing into the desert. The Desert Queen Mine , rich in gold and ore, was discovered near a working cow camp, but the mine’s riches diminished, and its owner died. Ownership of the mine passed on to mine worker Bill Keys in exchange for back wages. Keys, who had collaborated on several “deals” with dubious miner “Death Valley Scotty,” also filed a homestead on 160 acres of land that included the old Queen Mill, an ore processing site. Keys and his new wife, Frances, built a home, the Desert Queen Ranch, on the isolated homestead on the southern edge of the Mojave (just north of the Hidden Valley campground) and raised a large family. By the 1930s when the Depression hit the nation, a few more families homesteaded near the Desert Queen Ranch, ending the Keys family’s isolated life, and the family constructed several guest houses for their new company. Bill Keys, who served a short jail sentence for shooting a neighbor in a gunfight, died in 1969, preceded in death by his wife six years earlier, and is buried in the family cemetery on the ranch.
Visitors to Joshua Tree can wander the ranch today only on a scheduled tour which is filled with fascinating history as well as ranch remnants. Work is ongoing to preserve the Desert Queen Ranch as long as possible as a tribute to humankind’s adaptation to the desert. As a plus, the views from this perch atop the Little San Bernardino Mountains, encompassing the entire Coachella Valley from the San Gorgonio Pass to the Salton Sea, are unsurpassed.
Off-Road into an Earthquake Zone
The “real” desert can seem like one of life’s harshest places to tour, but on closer inspection this landscape is anything but dry and colorless. A tour on Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours & Events will reveal the lush, biologically diverse and “lively” world that lies a jeep ride away. The cherry-red jeeps of the tour company are your desert “limos” into Indian canyons with palm groves, waterfalls and sparkling pools, and high mountain hiking and touring; seasonal tours might include wildflower extravaganzas and the desert by night.
For an unforgettable tour experience, venture into an “earthquake zone” on its signature tour of the San Andreas Fault Zone . Extraordinary scenery abounds as your Big Red Jeep winds its way through the labyrinth of geological cuts and canyons of the San Andreas Fault Zone while your naturalist guide entertains you with stories about the plants, animals, geology and history of the California desert. You’ll even walk between steep walls of deep canyons that have been created by the powerful forces of the plate tectonic, water, wind and time.
