In addition to being required to pray three times daily (normally five, but exceptions are made when traveling), Allah also requires Muslims to begin other prayers, or duas, to keep them safe as soon as they leave their cities or towns and begin their travels. Whether before or during their travels—and whether by airplane, car, boat or other transportation—Muslims ask Allah to protect them on their journeys and get them back home safely to their families.

Invocation for Traveling

Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haathaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Allaahumma 'innaa nas'aluka fee safarinaa haathal-birrawattaqwaa, waminal-'amalimaa tardhaa, Allaahumma hawwin 'alaynaa safaranaa haathaa watwi 'annaa bu'dahu, Allaahumma 'Antas-saahibu fis-safari, walkhaleefatu fil-'ahli, Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka'aabanl-mandhari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maaliwal'ahli.

Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety, and for works that are pleasing to You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.

The Dua for Traveling (Safar): In the diverse tapestry of Islamic traditions, a prayer resonates through the ages, encapsulating the spirit of protection and ease for those embarking on journeys – the “Dua for Traveling” or “Dua for Safar.” In Arabic, it is uttered with sincerity: “اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِن وَعَثَاءِ السَفَرِ,” and in English, it translates to “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel.” This dua serves as a shield against the uncertainties that may accompany a journey and is deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam.

When and Why was it Introduced?

The roots of the Dua for Traveling can be traced back to the guidance provided by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Quranic emphasis on seeking Allah's protection in various aspects of life. The Prophet, recognizing the challenges and uncertainties inherent in travel, introduced this dua as a means for believers to seek divine safeguarding during their journeys.

Muslims recite this dua before embarking on any trip, be it a short commute or a long-distance travel. It is a recognition that, while travel opens avenues for exploration and growth, it also brings forth challenges and uncertainties. The dua seeks not only physical safety but also spiritual and emotional well-being during the journey.

What Does the Dua Signify?

  • O Allah, I seek refuge in You : This humble plea acknowledges the dependence on Allah's protection. It is an act of seeking refuge in the divine, recognizing that true safety lies in the hands of the Almighty.
  • From the hardships of travel : The dua is specific, addressing the potential challenges and difficulties that may arise during a journey. It encompasses not only physical dangers but also emotional and spiritual well-being.

Who Recites the Dua for Traveling?

This dua is recited by Muslims of all ages and backgrounds before embarking on any journey. It is a practice embraced by both frequent travelers and those setting out on occasional trips, underscoring the universal need for protection and ease during travel.

Where is the Dua Recited?

Whether uttered at home, at the airport, or even within the confines of a vehicle, it is a personal supplication that symbolizes the intimate connection between the traveler and Allah. Understanding the Essence of Dua When Traveling

In Islam, dua is an integral part of our relationship with Allah. It is a way to communicate our hopes, fears, and desires, seeking His guidance and blessings in all aspects of life. Dua is a reflection of our faith, humility, and trust in the Divine. When we make dua, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His control over every aspect of our lives. Through dua, we establish a profound connection with our Creator, finding solace and strength in His infinite mercy.

Dua Before the Journey

Embarking on a journey is an exciting yet uncertain time. Before setting foot outside our homes, it is crucial to seek Allah’s protection and blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever leaves his home, and says: ‘In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no might nor power except with Allah,’ it will be said to him: ‘You have been guided, defended, and protected,’ and the devil will go far away from him” (Sunan Abu Dawood).

In preparation for your journey, take a moment to make dua. Seek Allah’s protection from all potential hardships and calamities that may come your way. Offer supplications for a smooth and safe journey, accompanied by His divine mercy. By starting your travels with the remembrance of Allah, you invoke His blessings and pave the way for a secure expedition.

Dua During the Journey

As you embark on your journey, the significance of dua remains steadfast. Each step, whether on land, air, or sea, presents unique challenges and unforeseen circumstances. In these moments, turning to Allah through dua provides us with tranquility and assurance. We implore His protection, guidance, and assistance, understanding that our safety lies solely in His hands.

During the journey, offer prayers specific to each stage, seeking Allah’s safeguarding grace. Whether you’re boarding a plane, driving on a busy highway, or navigating through unfamiliar terrain, take a moment to recite supplications tailored to your circumstances. These prayers become a shield against accidents, discomfort, and any potential harm. By placing your trust in Allah and making dua, you invite His divine intervention, transforming your journey into a blessed and secure experience.

Dua Upon Arrival

Upon reaching your destination, express your gratitude to Allah for His protection and guidance. Offer prayers of thanksgiving, recognizing that your safe arrival is a testament to His mercy and benevolence. At this juncture, take a moment to make dua for a blessed stay and positive experiences throughout your journey. Seek His blessings in exploring new places, meeting new people, and gaining valuable insights from your travels.

Remember, dua is not limited to seeking protection from harm; it is also about seeking blessings, prosperity, and spiritual growth. Embrace the opportunity to connect with Allah, for He is ever-ready to respond to your heartfelt supplications.

Can dua change the course of my journey?

While we ultimately rely on Allah’s divine decree, dua has the power to invoke His intervention and influence the outcome of our journey. It instills within us a sense of tranquility, strengthens our faith, and aligns our actions with His guidance.

Are there specific duas for different modes of travel?

Yes, there are supplications and prayers tailored to various forms of travel. These include prayers for boarding a plane, driving, sailing, or any other mode of transportation. These specific duas ensure that we seek Allah’s protection and blessings throughout the journey.

In the realm of travel, dua serves as a faithful companion, offering solace, protection, and blessings. By understanding the essence of dua, making supplications before, during, and after the journey, and expressing gratitude upon arrival, we infuse our travels with spirituality and divine guidance. Embrace the power of dua, for it is an integral part of our faith and an ever-present source of strength. Let your journey be safe, blessed, and filled with the mercy of Allah, knowing that you are under His watchful care.

As we embark on our travels, may we always remember the profound impact dua can have on our journeys, both in this world and the next.

This act is deeply rooted in many cultures and religions, including Islam, where visiting graves is a significant practice….

Traveler's Supplications in Islam: Understanding & Reciting Key Invocations for Safe Journeys

The Traveler's Invocation in Islam

Introduction

In Islam, every act of daily life can become an opportunity to draw closer to Allah, the Almighty. Travel, whether short or long, is one of those special moments when believers are encouraged to make specific supplications for their safety, guidance, and peaceful return. In this article, we will explore the importance of the traveler’s invocation through the teachings of the Qur’an and authentic hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), providing examples of invocations in Arabic, along with their transliteration and translation into English.

1. The Call for Divine Protection During Travel

Travel, whether for business, leisure, or pilgrimage, can come with challenges and uncertainties. Hence, Islam urges believers to seek protection and guidance from Allah before and during their journey. Allah states in the Qur’an: “ And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you remember your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. ” (Qur’an, Al-Baqara, verse 200) This verse emphasizes the importance of invocation during the pilgrimage but can also apply to other journeys.

2. The Power of the Traveler's Invocation

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught believers the significance of the traveler’s invocation. He said: “ Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of a father, the supplication of a fasting person, and the supplication of a traveler. ” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi) This indicates that when you travel, your supplications hold special significance and are more likely to be answered.

3. Examples of Invocations in Arabic, Transliteration, and Translation:

A. invocation for departure:.

“بسم الله توكلت على الله ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله.”

Transliteration: “ Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah .”

Translation: “In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah, and there’s no power or strength except with Allah.”

B. Invocation for Safety:

“اللهم هون علينا سفرنا هذا واطو عنا بعده.”

Transliteration: “ Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha wa tawwi ‘anna bu’dahu .”

Translation: “O Allah, make our journey easy for us and shorten its distance.”

D. Invocation for Safe Return:

Transliteration : “ Subhan alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inni nas’aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wa at-taqwa, wa min al-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha wa atwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma anta as-sahibu fi as-safar, wa al-khalifatu fi al-ahli. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’thais-safar, wa ka’bati al-manzari wa su’i al-munqalabi fi al-mali wa al-ahli. “

Translation: “Praise to the One who subjected this to us, for we could not have controlled it [ourselves], and we will surely return to our Lord. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey and acts that please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and make its length short for us. O Allah, You are our Companion during the journey and the Successor in our families. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel, the gloominess of the sights, and the evil changes in wealth and family upon our return.” Upon returning, add: “We return, repentant, worshiping our Lord and praising Him.”

Five Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

safe journey message in islam

Last updated on November 17th, 2021 at 08:40 am

Have you ever found yourself on the plane ready to take off, but unable to find your booklet of prayers for traveling? Often we find ourselves without access to these special duas or prayers when we need them the most. In our opinion, memorizing duas is the best solution.

One of the beautiful things about Islam is that there is a prayer for our normal daily activities and even prayers for traveling abroad .  When we embark on a journey, we should recite a prayer to Allah and remember Him. It brings us closer to Allah and also saves us from any untoward incident that may take place on our journey.

As per Islamic teachings, reciting a dua not only brings Allah’s protection; it also mobilizes angels to protect us during our journey and bring us safely back home to our loved ones.

Below are the five common duas that Muslims recite before journeys, complete with Arabic verse, dua transliteration, source, and explanation.

1. Prayer for Safety When Embarking on Travel

  • Arabic Verse: وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًا مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
  • Dua Transliteration: Rabbi anzilni munzalan mubarokan wa anta khairul munzilin
  • English Translation: My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing-place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].
  • Source: Surah Al Muminun ayat 29

When embarking on travel, this dua is recited to protect oneself from any mishap and to ensure a safe landing. When you recite this dua, you will feel calmer and less anxious about your upcoming trip.

It is always helpful to start a journey by remembering Allah. This prayer is useful to keep with you whenever you are packing for your trip so that you can easily recite it once you leave your home or on the plane.

This prayer asks Allah to protect us when traveling abroad . It also helps us proclaim our faith and affirm the fact that there is no one that can protect us except Allah.

2. Prayer for Safety During the Trip

  • Arabic Verse:
  • English Translation: Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord, we shall return.
  • Source: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

This excerpt from Surah Az-Zukhruf is a masnoon prayer that thanks Allah for providing us with the means of transportation to make our journey. This dua is short and can be easily memorized so that it becomes a habit to recite it when on a journey.

The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Surah as dua when he would mount an animal for traveling . He would say Bismillah and then recite this prayer for travel safety . We may be traveling by car, plane, train, or boat; whatever the means of transportation is, it is always important to remember Allah during our journey.

3. Prayer for Traveling to a New Place

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Wa-qul Rabbi Adkhilnee Mudkhala S’idqiw Wa Akhrijnee Mukhraja S’diqiw Waj-a’l Lee Mil Ladunkaa Sult’aanan Nas’eeraa
  • English Translation: O Lord, cause me to enter a goodly entrance and cause me to go out a goodly exit, and grant me from you an authority to assist (me).
  • Source: Sura Al-‘Isra 17:80

The prophet (ﷺ) was in Makkah and had to emigrate to Madinah when Allah revealed this verse. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) was being attacked by individuals in Makkah and was preparing to enter a new place.

This verse asks for Allah’s protection when taking a big decision and traveling to a new place. This decision could be anything from moving to a new city to even moving to a new home. In this prayer, we are asking Allah to bless our entrance and exit. We are looking for His assistance and blessing while we take this decision.

4. Prayer upon Reaching Destination Safely

  • Arabic Verse: وَقَالَ ارْكَبُواْ فِيهَا بِسْمِ اللّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
  • Dua Transliteration: Va kealarkaboo feehea bismilleahi macreahea va murseahea, inna raabbee la gaafoorun raaheem
  • English Translation: Embark there in! In the name of Allah be its course or its mooring. Lo! My Lord is Forgiving and Merciful!
  • Source: Surah Al-Hud – 11:41

This verse is from Sura Hud, which relays the trials and tribulations of Prophet Noah allehisalam. Prophet Noah was commanded by Allah to create a ship and load it with two creatures (male and female) of every living thing that had a soul.

When the command came to leave on the ship, a strong storm came that brought heavy rainfall. This verse was then revealed at that time and means that the moving course and resting (anchorage) of the ship will be all in Allah’s hands.

This is a specific verse in the Surah and is often used when someone reaches their destination safely. It is a small and short prayer that can be memorized easily when traveling abroad and after you have reached your destination.

5. Prayer Upon Returning Home

  • Arabic Verse: آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عابِدُونَ ساجِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
  • Dua Transliteration: Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, sajidun, lirabbina hamidun
  • English Translation: We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord.
  • Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 3084

This short prayer for travel safety is part of a longer verse that the Holy Prophet would recite upon returning from his journeys. After he came back from a journey, he would say Allah u Akbar three times and then recite this dua.

It is important not to forget Allah once we have returned safely to our homes. Often we only remember Allah when we are starting our journey or when we are in the process of traveling. But we should be grateful to Allah once we return safe and sound.

This dua only has a few words and can be easily learned by heart so that you can recite it quickly once you return home safely after traveling abroad.

Now You Know the 5 Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

We can see that all of the prayers for traveling safety are not very long and can be remembered very easily. One should understand that when you are traveling, you are putting yourself in the trust of Allah and his powers.

Only Allah can decide what our fate is, but by saying prayers before we start our journey, during the journey, and when we reach home, we are affirming the fact that we believe in Allah’s power to protect us from harm.

Duas for Travelling

Table of Contents

Islam is a comprehensive religion that covers all spheres of life. In addition to the five obligatory prayers, Allah has commanded us to seek His blessings and guidance before undertaking any action. For instance, we must seek Allah’s protection from any harm during travelling by reciting Dua for Travelling .

Whether we travel by car, train, or airplane, we must recite certain Duas before starting our journey . Of course, we plan ahead of time, but no one is certain how our plan progresses or ends. Therefore, Muslims must seek Allah’s direction and assistance to reach their destinations safely and return home to their family. While you do so, opt for Dua Travels to maximize your experience.

Islam allows all Muslims to travel when the intentions are for the right purpose. While reciting  Dua for travelling , Muslims must firmly believe in Allah (SWT) and His blessings. He is the only one who has the power to protect us from unfortunate events like accidents and the harm of travelling. Let us explore some of the most beneficial as we must recite before and during the journey.

What Does the Holy Quran Say about Travelling?

Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is the book of wisdom that teaches man the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to lead their lives. The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travelling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasized travelling. He told the believers that travelling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep  to  travelling by night  because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the  night .” [Abu Dawud].

Dua Before Travelling

Shariah recommends to off 2 rakaat nawafil before starting travel. It is because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) performed this task before going on any journey. You can get the confirmation of this practice from the following hadith.

Dua Before Travelling

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

Dua for Travel

Once you have left home, you may recite the following Dua for Travel at any point during your journey.

Dua for Travel

O Allah, we ask You in our travel for righteousness, taqwa, and good deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah makes our travel ease and shortens the distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the guardian of our family (in our absence). O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurrence in wealth and family.

Dua for Travelling in Quran

The Quran clearly stated the Dua for safe Travel regardless of the mode of transport. The following Dua for Travelling is recited to seek Allah’s protection and safety throughout the journey.

Dua for Travelling in Quran

While reciting this Dua, Muslims ask Allah for His blessings and wisdom through the journey. They also thank Allah for the permission to ride the vehicle. Also, this is a means to ask for Allah’s  (SWT) forgiveness before setting off, so our sins are forgiven by the Almighty if we encounter any unfortunate events.

What Does Allah Say About Travelling?

safe journey message in islam

The Holy Quran is the religious book of Islam and is considered the ultimate guide for Muslims. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) describes our life as a journey, with ignorance and knowledge being analogous to the dark and light on the way, respectively.  The Quran has numerous references for Muslims to follow in order to go through a better worldly yet spiritual journey. However, in several places, Allah (SWT) has placed special emphasis on the significance of physical travel.

In the Quran, the word “saiyr” is used to refer to a traveller. The literal meaning of saiyr is to travel or move; for example; the planets are called sayyarah. The term saiyr appears in the Holy Quran 27 times. In most places, it’s used in the formulation of “Tell them to travel,” “Do they not travel,” or “Do travel.”

On the significance of travelling in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the One who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. (al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih)

Duas for Travelling in a Car

To protect yourself and your travel companions it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following Surah, with a wish to have a safe and blessed journey:

“With the Name of Allah. Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord, we are returning. Praise is to Allah . Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.” (Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)

In general, having been often mentioned in the Quran, travelling  is a way to achieve insight and wisdom by broadening an individual’s horizons and potential

Duas for Travelling on Plane

Travelling is viewed as a good deed in Islam. this is mainly because in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Ummah succeeded in spreading Islam through exploration and travelling. The act of travelling also strengthens our belief, aboutwhich Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘ Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation.'” (Surah Al-Ankabut, Verse 20)

Therefore, following the Sunnah – acts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – it is advised that every Muslim should follow the exemplary Adab (etiquette) mentioned below, while travelling out of the city or country:

  • Dua When You Leave the House | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on the adab of leaving your house for travelling , stated: “When you leave your house, perform two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils.” (Hadith reported by Al-Bazzar and al-Bayhaqi)

Furthermore, in “Al-Majmu,” Imam An-Nawawi mentions that while performing the two raka’at , in the first raka’at, one should recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatiahah. However, in the second raka’at, one should recite Surah Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah.

According to the narration of Suhaib (RA), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite the following verse when he looked at the town that he wished to enter:

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.”

(Hadith reported by An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim)

  • Dua Upon Entering the Place to Stay (Hotel)

“I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every evil (that has been created).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim)

Khawalah binte Hakim As-Sulaimiyyah (RA) narrates for the aforementioned verses that she heard Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying, “Whoever, on arrival, says (verse mentioned above) no evil shall befall him until he departs from where he arrived.”

  • Dua When Facing Difficulties

There will be several times when travelling when one might feel lost. In such a case, it is advised to perform zikr (remembrance) of Allah (SWT) and istighfar (for forgiveness) for our sins.

In a narration by Abdullah bin Abbas (RA), it is stated that, “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if a person constantly makes Istighfar (i.e., “Astaghfirullah”), then Allah removes every difficulty, frees him from every sorrow and makes a means for him to receive sustenance from places that he never thought of.” (Hadith reported by Ahmad)

  • Dua Upon Returning Home | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

As it is advised to pray two raka’at when leaving for a journey, it is also recommended to pray two raka’at when returning home.  Jabir (RA), in a narration, says that: “I was travelling with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) When we reached Madinah, He Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to me, “Enter the mosque and pray two raka’at.”

Also, it is recommended to perform the prayer in the same way as the two raka’at prayers before leaving the house.

Duas for Our Parents

There is no love more pure and selfless except for the love of your parents. Everyone’s parents love them unconditionally, and regardless of all and worldly reasons. And realistically stating it is nearly impossible for a child to reciprocate that love. Therefore, being Muslims, the best thing that you can do is recite the following duas wishing a happy and blessed life for your parents:

  • Dua for the Happiness of Your Parents:

“RabbiawziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAalawalidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahuwaaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtuilayka wa-innee mina almuslimeen”

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work the righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” ( Quran 46:15)

  • Dua for the Long Life of Your Parents:

“Adhhib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas, wa’shfi anta al-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqaman”

Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5351, Muslim, 2191)

The muslim traveler's guide to packing for a trip.

Traveling can be one of the most exhilarating and liberating experiences in life. You get to explore new places, have unique experiences, and make lasting memories with friends and family. But to any Muslim traveler, there is an additional layer of spiritual appreciation around it; something that turns a regular vacation into somewhat of a pilgrimage — the power of prayer! It’s believed by many people across the world that reciting certain supplications (known as Duas) for traveling helps bring protection and peace on your journey. Here we will look at some of these traveling prayers for Muslims, what they mean in Arabic, how you can use them when traveling, and other useful tips to help you stay safe wherever you go.

The importance of Dua for traveling

Duas (or supplications) are a powerful form of spiritual communication, as they allow us to communicate directly with Allah and ask for His protection, guidance, and grace. When it comes to traveling in particular, there are tons of authentic narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), that teaches the importance of saying certain Duas whenever someone embarks on a journey. The most famous Dua for travel is known as “Dua al-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”.

This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out or even when you arrive to your destination.

Travel essentials for Muslim travelers

Apart from the spiritual tools of prayer, there are also some key material items that all Muslim travelers should bring with them on their journeys. These include:

– A Quran and/or an Islamic book ; this is particularly important if traveling abroad and encountering a new culture.

-Headscarves and long clothes such as abayas or hijab(s) can be useful for those observing traditional modesty.

– Islamic books or audio lectures that contain Islamic knowledge relevant to the situation, such as understanding cultural norms in other countries or how to deal with a difficult travel experience.

– An Islamic compass that can help with finding the direction of qibla (the direction to face when praying) no matter where you are.

– Miswak – a natural toothbrush found in some Islamic countries, it is considered Sunnah (recommended practice) to use it while traveling.

– Prayer beads or tasbihs – these are particularly useful for dhikr and reciting Duas throughout your journey.

These items will not only provide spiritual support during your travels but also provide practical guidance on how to observe Islamic etiquette both at home and abroad.

What to say in a dua for traveling

سبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ. Quran Verse Travel Duaa
Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return. Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14 Travel Duaa

-Always be mindful of Allah’s presence in your travels, regardless of where you are or what challenges come your way.

The best time to recite a dua for traveling

This will ensure that you begin your travels with blessings and protection from Allah, as well as help focus your thoughts and intentions so that they remain in line with His guidance throughout the journey. Additionally, it is a good idea to recite any special Duas or prayers you may have learned while traveling, such as “l-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”. This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip, but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out, or before going to sleep.

The blessings of making a dua for traveling

Dua for travel travelling

One of the best things about Islam is that we have dua almost everything. From eating, sitting, sleeping, and even traveling. There can be many benefits for us to reciting duas.

Benefits Of Dua For Travelling

Whenever a Muslim travels or steps out of the home for a journey, whether it is a short distance or long distance traveling, we recite some duas. So we can have a safe journey and receive the blessings of Almighty Allah.

  • If a person recites dua for traveling, then the Angels protect you while you get back home.
  • Reciting dua when traveling can save an individual from incidents that one has never imagined.
  • By reciting dua, a person is more likely to perform good deeds and have a positive day ahead.
  • Allah grants the traveler ease in his journey.
  • Reciting duas leads to blessings from Allah.

Hundreds of thousands of people usually die because of traffic accidents in bikes, cars, planes, etc., all across the world, so traveling can be quite fatal. As we grew up, we heard about a lot of plane crashes and other dangerous events. So we need to seek help from Allah to stay protected and safe, and he is the only one who can protect us from dangerous hazards and accidents.

We must also try our best to minimize our traveling unless it is necessary or urgent as Muslims. We need to recite duas more often so we can stay blessed and safe from the curse of shaitan at the same time.

Incorporating Ahadith into the Practice of Dua for Travelling

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of dua in the life of a Muslim, particularly during travel. Several Ahadith highlight how the Prophet would not only recite this dua himself but also encourage his companions to do the same, demonstrating the dua’s significance in seeking divine protection and blessings.

Benefits Highlighted in Ahadith:

  • Spiritual Protection: Travel often exposes one to various risks and uncertainties. The dua acts as a shield, offering spiritual protection by placing the traveler under Allah’s care.
  • Mental Peace: Knowing that one has sought the blessings and protection of Allah brings a sense of peace and calm, essential for any journey.
  • Ease and Safety: The dua specifically asks for ease in travel and protection from the hardships that can accompany journeys, echoing the Prophet’s teachings on relying on Allah for safety and success.

The Significance of Travel in Islam

Islam places a strong emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, both of which are often amplified through the experience of travel. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China,” highlighting the importance of seeking understanding beyond one’s immediate environment. Travel in Islam serves multiple purposes: it is a means to perform Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca), a way to learn about different cultures and societies, and a method to appreciate the diversity of Allah’s creation.

The Benefits of Travel

  • Personal Growth: Travel challenges individuals, pushing them out of their comfort zones and encouraging adaptability and resilience.
  • Cultural Appreciation: It fosters a deep appreciation for diversity, teaching tolerance and understanding through firsthand experiences with different cultures and ways of life.
  • Spiritual Enlightenment: For Muslims, travel can be a spiritual journey, offering opportunities to reflect on one’s faith and the magnificence of Allah’s creation.
  • Gaining Knowledge: It aligns with the Islamic principle of seeking knowledge, understanding different communities, and the natural world.

The Dua for Travelling is more than just words. it is a profound act of faith, embodying the Muslim traveler’s reliance on Allah. It serves as a reminder of the importance of turning to Allah in all our endeavors, seeking His guidance, protection, and blessings. As we embark on our journeys, let this dua be a source of comfort, peace, and protection, enveloping our travels in safety and piety.

10 Essential Islamic Etiquettes for Traveling

' src=

“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” Dalai Lama

Ah, traveling fills the soul and nourishes the spirit to explore the hidden beauty of diversified cultures worldwide. Islam has taught us the essential Islamic etiquette when traveling for us to be the best version of ourselves when we set foot in a foreign place. How wonderful is that? SubhanAllah.

From the two Easts and Wests, Allah Almighty has Created people of different ethnicities, religions, and cultures to widen our weltanschauung, practice humility, and spark our curiosity to learn beyond borders.

Have you traveled anywhere in the world before? If so, what was the experience like, and did you learn something new? Oftentimes we look forward to having a fantastic experience when we travel.

We can’t wait to indulge in the atmosphere, take Insta-worthy pictures to share with our friends, and try out their unique cuisines. But have we ever reflected on whether or not we practice specific etiquette when traveling according to the Islamic teachings as mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah?

If you have never thought of it — and it’s normal to overlook this! — here is some essential Islamic etiquette when traveling the next time with your family and friends, InshaAllah.

1. Fulfil Your Responsibilities and Settle Your Debts if Any

Before you begin your journey, fulfill whatever responsibility is required for your role. If you are a parent and will be leaving your children, ensure that your children are left with money and a trusted caretaker. If you are a student, make sure that your assignments are complete prior to your hiatus. If you have any debts to pay, settle them as soon as you can before leaving for an adventure.

It has been reported on the authority of ‘Amr b. al-‘As that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “All the sins of a Shahid (martyr) are forgiven except debt.” [Sahih Muslim]

2. Travel with Good Intentions

Everything begins with the right intention, so what is yours? Have you ever pondered on why you engage in traveling in the first place? Is it to seek knowledge from saints and sages in another country? Is it to find inner peace? Whatever reason you have decided must be beneficial for you and should not be blameworthy. Remember, there are a lot of rewards — tenfold in fact — for those who rectify their intentions before performing deeds, InshaAllah.

It is narrated on the authority of Amir al-Mu’minin (Leader of the Believers), Abu Hafs ‘Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), say “Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

3. Find Good Company to Travel with

It has always been a dream for some people to travel alone. Just like in the movie Eat, Pray, Love , the main character found wisdom and gained experience traveling alone…but unfortunately, it is not encouraged for Muslims to embark on a journey alone for safety reasons. There’s a lot that could go wrong when we travel to a foreign place we’ve never set foot on!

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of traveling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.” [Al-Bukhari]

Instead, find good company to travel with. This way, it will be easier for you and others to navigate your way safely, and gain a much more insightful experience, InshaAllah.

‘Amr bin Shu’aib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.” [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud]

4. Do Not Go Overboard with Your Expenses

Sometimes our desires get the best of us. We buy things from overseas for the sake of sentimental value. You think to yourself that you never know when you’ll get a chance to visit this country again and justify your splurging.

What started as a “little” treat can quickly become enough silverware, souvenirs, t-shirts, and touristy items to fill a suitcase or two. You might not regret buying all of those…until you look at your bank account.

Is it worth buying all of those things just for the sake of sentimental value and proof that you have gone to this country? You can buy a thing or two, but going overboard with spending is not an encouraged practice in Islam. Islam encourages spending modestly.

To practice essential etiquette when traveling, set and categorize each budget before you embark on your journey. This way you won’t exceed your card limit. For instance, budget set amounts for food, transportation, accommodations, and spending money. With proper planning and execution, you will always have enough money for rainy days, InshaAllah.

“وَءَاتِ ذَا ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ حَقَّهُۥ وَٱلْمِسْكِينَ وَٱبْنَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا

Give to close relatives their due, as well as the poor and ˹needy˺ travelers. And do not spend wastefully.” [Quran 17:26]

5. Bid Your Family Members Farewell

Death is inevitable, so Islamic teachings are preparing Muslims for the worst-case scenario. One of the proper etiquettes, before we set to travel, is bidding our family members farewell for we do not know what the future holds.

Take this opportunity to gather all our family members, ask for forgiveness and their blessings, and bid them goodbye before you begin your adventure. At the very least, when you have done this, you have already made amends with your family and relatives; let bygones be bygones before you leave.

Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you.” [Qur’an 4:1]

6. Recite Essential Du’as before Traveling

There are several du’as you can recite before you leave your home and begin your travel. Always ask Allah Almighty for His Divine Blessings, Protection, and Heavenly Care. Here are some of the du’as you can practice:

Du’a for traveling:

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ. “Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.” [Qur’an 43:13-14]

Du’a when returning from traveling:

“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all Sovereignty and Praise, and He is over all things Omnipotent. We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord. Allah fulfilled His Promise, aided His Servant, and single-handedly defeated the allies.” [Al-Bukhari]

Du’a for protection:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ “In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in heaven, and He is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.” [Sunan Abi Daud]

7. Offer Sunnah Musafir Prayer

If you do have the time before you travel, offer two raka’ah of Salatul Musafir to ask Allah Almighty for protection, safety, and ultimately His Blessings. You can refer to the du’as above to recite after you’ve completed your prayer. This is recommended and not obligatory for every Muslim.

8. Observe Your Manners and Dress Appropriately

When you visit a foreign place, you should do your best to observe your manners, be humble, and wear appropriately to blend in with the locals. Some of the unfavorable acts include talking or laughing loudly, making insensitive or racist jokes, littering…and the list goes on and on.

When you visit a new place, especially if it is underdeveloped or considered a poor country, do not be arrogant! Always practice humility, and humbleness and do your part to share your wealth with those in need. Remember, whatever you say or do reflects the image of Islam, so do and act your best, InshaAllah.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be Pleased with him) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: The Lord’s commandment for every one of His slaves is, ‘Spend on others, and I will spend on you’. [Bukhari, Muslim]

9. Don’t Forget to Buy Souvenirs

Fancy some unique trinkets to give your loved ones? Buy them and give them as gifts to your friends and family! Little acts of kindness go a long way, and this act will let them know you are thinking about them and appreciate their existence, mashaAllah.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Exchange gifts, as that will lead to increasing your love for one another.” [Bukhari]

Asmah (may Allah be Pleased with her) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: Spend, and do not count, lest Allah counts against you. Do not withhold your money, lest Allah withholds from you. Spend what you can. [Bukhari, Muslim]

10. Learn Something New

Explore the world with an open mind. Begin the first step with the right intention; to gain knowledge for the sake of Allah Almighty and His Messenger, Peace, and Blessings be upon him. Sometimes, all we care for is the thrill to experience a whole different world in another country and nothing more. Does that really fully satisfy us as Muslims? Do we not want to seek anything else other than the thrill?

This is a great time for us to learn something new from someone or something we observe in another country. Just like the saints and sages in the past who have embarked on spiritual and insightful journeys to explore new realms of knowledge in the hidden parts of the world, we too should emulate such excitement to embark on the quest for ‘ilm.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be Pleased with him), reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The best of you in Islam are those with the best character if they have religious understanding.” [Musnad Ahmad]

In retrospect, going on a journey to travel and explore the beauty of the world is in fact recommended and encouraged in Islam. It is a means to open our eyes to new possibilities, widen our perspective and sharpen our wisdom to become more virtuous and knowledgeable Muslims.

If you were given an opportunity to go somewhere around the world, where would you go? Why? What are some of the places you would like to go at that particular place? How do you think you going to that country would benefit you? Ask these questions yourself and you will find an answer within you, InshaAllah.

Students travel to different lands for their higher studies, people travel for their jobs knowing as less as nothing about their job environment. Fear of new place and anxiety of meeting new people is very natural in these circumstances. Well, putting trust in Allah and showing to Him that we are nothing without His aid and help is what this dua reflects.  For secure and safe traveling this dua certainly is very useful and one of the easier ones. One may also recite this dua when We want to be Successful in our plans. For more days on success, you may follow this link.

Prophet (saww) said:

The Prophet (saww) said: When a man goes out of his house and recites the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended, and protected?

Reported by Abu Dawood (5095) and Al-Tirmidhi (3462); classified as Saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih Abi Dawood.

2 – Dua For Alla’s Protection During Your Trip

Traveling symbolizes that we, humans, are a temporary creature, it encloses the men of the world as one community, it enlightens the virtue of humility in a person. It gives you an insight into Allah’s blessings in the form of different creatures. Imam Shafi stated:

For in travel, there are five benefits: Relief of adversity, earning of livelihood, knowledge, etiquette, and noble companionship. ”  (Imam as-Shafi)

1 – The Prophet’s Traveling Dua:

Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has reported that when the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) set out for a journey and mounted on his camel, he would recite the following dua:

Travel Duas - 6 Islamic Duas To Recite When Traveling

Translation :

Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our, Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor (the One Who guards them in a person’s absence) over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of heart and from being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge with You from an ill-fated outcome with regard to wealth and family. – (Narrated by Muslim, 1342)

Can you see, how beautifully Allah has guided His men in every aspect of life? Can you see why Islam is seen as a code of life? It is because of these minute precisions Allah has given to us! The one who has created us has formulated basic codes so that we are not left alone anywhere, and we remind ourselves that Allah is present nearest to us and takes care of our journey. We just need to work on the ethics of travel. We need to recite the days telling Allah that we only put our trust in Him.

Q. Should You Pray Before Traveling?

A. Yes, it is highly recommended to say 2 raka’at nafal prayers before you start your journey. As the Prophet PBUH said:

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils.”

Similarly, when you come back home after the journey, you should again say 2 raka’at prayer to thank Allah.

Q. Are Duas Accepted When Traveling?

A. The Prophet PBUH has told us about certain times of the day or certain instances in life when the chances of acceptance of prayer are very high. One of these times is when a Muslim is traveling. So if your trip and your dua are both for a good reason, remember Allah during the journey and He will surely remember you.

As the Prophet PBUH said:

Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih]

What one who is staying home should say to one who is travelling when he departs, and what the one who is travelling should say to the one who is staying home

Praise be to Allah.

It is mustahabb for the one who is bidding farewell to a friend of his who is going to travel to say to him: “Astawdi‘ Ullaha deenaka wa amaanataka wa khawaateema ‘amalika (I leave your religious commitment in the care of Allah, as well as what you leave behind [of family and wealth], and the last of your deeds).” That is because of the report that is proven from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), as narrated in Sunan Abi Dawood (2601) and elsewhere, from ‘Abdullah al-Khatmi, who said: When the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) wanted to bid farewell to the army, he said: “Astawdi‘ Ullaha deenakum wa amaanatakum wa khawaateema a‘maalikum (I leave your religious commitment in the care of Allah, as well as what you leave behind [of family and wealth], and the last of your deeds).”

Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) bade me farewell and said: “Astawdi‘uka Allaha alladhi laa tadee‘u wadaa’i‘uhu (I leave you in the care of Allah, in Whose care nothing is lost).”

Narrated by Ibn Maajah (2825) and others; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

It was narrated that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to travel, so give me some provision for my journey. He said: “Zawwadaka Allahu at-taqwa (May Allah supply you with piety).” He said: Give me more. He said: “Wa ghafara dhanbaka (may He forgive your sin).” He said: Give me more, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. He said: “Wa yassara laka al-khayra haythuma kunta (May He make good easy for you wherever you may be).”

Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3444); classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani.

It was narrated from Saalim that Ibn ‘Umar used to say to a man, when he wanted to travel: Come close to me, and I will bid farewell to you as the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to bid farewell to us. Then he would say: “Astawdi‘ Ullaha deenaka wa amaanataka wa khawaateema ‘amalika (I leave your religious commitment in the care of Allah, as well as what you leave behind [of family and wealth], and the last of your deeds).”.

Narrated and classed as saheeh by at-Tirmidhi (3443); also classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

These are the supplications that the one who is staying home may offer for the one who is travelling.

With regard to the supplication of the traveller for the one who is staying home, what we have found concerning that is the report narrated by Ibn as-Sunni in ‘Aml al-‘Yawm wa’l-Laylah (516), from Moosaa ibn Wardaan: Abu Hurayrah said: Shall I not teach you some words that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) taught me?

When you want to travel, or leave a place, say to your family: “Astawdi‘ukum Allaha alladhi laa yukhayyibu wadaa’i‘ahu (I leave you in the care of Allah, Who does not neglect what is entrusted to Him).”

Its isnaad includes Ibn Luhay‘ah, who is da‘eef (weak) and had a poor memory.

It was classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allah have mercy on him) in as-Saheehah (16). See also: as-Silsilah ad-Da‘eefah (1470).

If he says to the one who is bidding farewell to him: Jazaak Allahu khayran (may Allah reward you with good), or he offers supplication for good for him, that is good and is something prescribed, in sha Allah.

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is mustahabb for him to bid farewell to his family, relatives, friends and neighbours, and to ask them to offer supplication for him, and for him to offer supplication for them.

End quote from al-Adhkaar (217).

With regard to raising the voice when offering this supplication, that should be in accordance with what is customary, so that his friend can hear him, because the hadiths quoted above indicate that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to make those to whom he was bidding farewell hear his supplication for them. Ibn ‘Umar and other companions of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to do likewise.

And Allah knows best.
