Sam Smith announces two homecoming shows at The O2 on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 April 2023 as part of their UK & Europe headline tour to celebrate their fourth studio album, Gloria, dropping 27th January 2023.

Sam’s upcoming 13-track record, Gloria will be their boldest statement yet and comes off the back of the huge success of lead single, Unholy. The megahit featuring Kim Petras has surpassed 200 million Spotify streams and remained on top of the Spotify and Apple Music global charts since the day of release. Unholy is Sam’s eighth number 1 smash and sits amongst only three artists to debut at number 1 this year on the UK Official Charts.

With a highly in-demand album, globe-straddling number 1 hit and exciting live plot, 2023 is undeniably going to be the year of Sam Smith.

Sam Smith live in London: a sweaty and spectacular night out

The British pop star is in the midst of their most expansive, daring era

“I know it’s Tuesday and the week has just begun,” Sam Smith says three songs into tonight’s sold-out hometown show, “but I want you to turn this place into a gay bar!” The Oscar, Grammy and Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter – and current scourge of the prurient right-wing media – has just opened with a hattrick of their soulful early hits: ‘Stay With Me’, ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and “Like I Can’.

They are dressed resplendently in a basque and top hat – think Tom of Finland crossed with La Cage aux Folles – and performing atop a giant gold statue of a reclining female deity. This, presumably, is Gloria, the “fighter spirit” after which this tour and Smith’s transformative fourth album is named. No one could accuse the 30-year-old of serving heteronormativity, but at this point, the overall vibe is much too classy and restrained to feel like a sweaty gay bar.

Accompanied by a four-piece band and three backing singers, Smith’s vocals are silky and supple throughout. They’re also a warm and reassuring stage presence who relishes the drama of each costume change – later on, they reappear in a pink pouffy coat that Diana Ross might dismiss as OTT. But, as fun as this show frequently is, it never feels flippant. When Smith covers Des’ree’s ‘I’m Kissing You’ dressed as an angel, their gold headpiece spells out the name of Brianna Ghey, the 16-year-old trans girl who was killed in a Cheshire park in February. It’s an incredibly poignant moment that underlines Smith’s status as an increasingly vocal spokesperson for the LGBTQ+ community.

Just after the halfway mark, there’s a thrilling shift in tempo. “Pretend you’re in a gay bar now ,” Smith says before performing the dark disco bop ‘Lose You’ and their housey Calvin Harris team-up ‘Promises’. By now, they’re flanked by a gaggle of backing dancers and the stage is bathed in pink and blue light. Smith has somehow made an 18,000-capacity arena feel like cult queer night Horsemeat Disco. When a banging version of their Disclosure collaboration ‘Latch’ segues into Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’, and Smith whips off their top to a roar from the crowd, it almost feels like time for a bosh of poppers.

The set ends with a pointed cover of Madonna ‘s ‘Human Nature’ – “Oops, I didn’t know I couldn’t talk about sex,” Smith sing with a wink – and their grinding recent chart-topper ‘Unholy’. Smith has delivered a beautifully designed show that echoes their creative evolution from lovelorn balladeer to something edgier and more transgressive. And the multigenerational crowd stays with them to the finish. Smith’s musical metamorphosis probably isn’t complete yet, but for now, this live triumph feels like a new high watermark.

Sam Smith has announced details of a huge tour of the UK and Europe for 2023 in support of their fourth album, Gloria .

The British pop star will head out on a trek across UK and European arenas in April, kicking off the dates in Sheffield on April 12. The tour will then run to the end of May, when it will wrap up back in the UK at Manchester’s AO Arena.

Tickets for the Gloria tour will go on general sale at 10am BST on October 27, while a pre-sale will open at 10am BST on October 25. Fans can gain access to the pre-sale by pre-ordering Gloria on any format from the Sam Smith store before 4pm BST on October 24, which will secure them an exclusive ticket pre-sale code for the tour.

The tour follows two sold-out headline shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall , which will take place this weekend (October 21, 22). The second date will be streamed live on TikTok from 8:30pm tomorrow via Smith’s account.

Smith confirmed the release of Gloria earlier this week (October 17), with the album set to arrive on January 27, 2023, via Capitol Records. Made with longtime collaborators Jimmy Napes, Stargate, and Max Martin stablemate ILYA,  Gloria  is not only a creative revelation but something of a personal revolution for the celebrated artist. Lyrically, the subjects dive deep and wide, into contemporary narratives around sex, lies, passion, self-expression, and imperfection.

The record will feature Smith’s recent global smash “Unholy,” which features Kim Petras . The single has already captured the No.1 spot on three Billboard charts–Global 200, Streaming Songs, and Digital Song Sales–and topped the U.S. Shazam chart, as well as racking up over 300 million combined global streams. In the UK, it has spent three consecutive weeks at No.1 on the UK Official Singles Chart.

This concert was absolutely amazing! His voice was so angelic and he was so genuine and humble. Every time he smiled it melted my heart because you could tell how grateful he was and how much he loves his life and it was just so beautiful! Everyone was there to just have a good time and everyone was singing along and it was such an incredible environment. One of the best moments was when someone from the crowd threw a rainbow flag on the stage during his song “HIM” and he took it a waved it around while everyone cheered in support of gay rights, it was so amazing. He is so inspiring and honestly my favorite artist. This was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to, and I never wanted it to end. One of the best nights of my life.

One of the best shows I’ve ever been to, so emotional and it still a happy show. When he played we could feel everything he was singing about, we felt his emotions. The whole concert was amazing, the opening show (Lewis Capaldi) was really good, love his voice and the songs he played. What I loved most about Sam Smith was the simplicity of his concert, there was no need for an elaborated scene, we’re there to see him and his singing, not a big show with a lot of dancing and decorations (not saying concerts who have that are bad, I actually really like them, what I mean is that he doesn’t need that to be great). Also, the decorations were so cool and amazing, and his speeches were simply beautiful and powerful LOVE IS LOVE!❤️

Everything about the show was amazing, ypu touch everyone in the auditorium. The songs you decided to sing were excellent and the feeling you put to every song you showed it in your eyes. After every song you smiled to the public and that made us more excited to be there and sometimes put tiers of excitement in our eyes. We could all related to your songs in different ways. You are an inspiration to me. I'm so happy I got the opportunity to see you after the show and get your autograph in my ticket and sweatshirt. That night it's going to be unforgettable for every person that was there that night and the night before. Hope I have the opportunity to see you again here in Mexico City.
