Although I’m a lifelong beachcomber, I had never heard of sea glass, or seaglass, until it was briefly mentioned in an American sitcom. Fresh air, the sound of waves, the cries of gulls, the horizon stretched out in front; while some go for meditation, I generally just need to hit a beach and the world’s troubles fall off me.

Now I have an additional focus, and a walk on the beach turns into a bit of an excursion, with a bag at the ready, head down, horizon and ships in the distance. I am hunting for a nice piece of beach glass.

And I am not alone. You will have seen these people; at low tide, they wander along the shores with a concentrated look on their faces. They, and I, are not looking for seashells, but for little pieces of glass, trodden on and ignored by most, but much cherished by others.

That old saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” has never been truer than when it comes to sea glass. Sea glass, seaglass, beach glass, or even mermaid’s tears, is, quite basically, discarded glass that is found on shores of rivers, lakes, and the sea. The remnants of old bottles, glasses, windows, food jars, vases, trinkets, and more, the shards have been tossed and frosted by the waves over the years until they are shimmering, smooth little gems.

The most-found colors are green, brown, and white, but there are also pinks, lilacs, blues, yellows, and aqua blues — basically, any color that might have once been used for something made from glass. And, if you are really lucky, there are multicolored pieces.

There is added fun to be had after your initial day out on the coast. Once you’ve collected some sea glass, it’s time to research, sort, and display what you’ve found. It is said that the first sea glass used for decorative purposes was in Philadelphia around the turn of the last century.

Families displayed collected pieces of sea glass in jars on their window sills to show the neighbors just how much time they spent holidaying on the beaches. Today, displaying found treasures is still an important part of the hobby of sea glass hunting, or seaglassing, a term which incidentally found its way into the Urban Dictionary not long ago.

There are online communities where sea glass collectors exchange photographs and tips on the provenance of select pieces, show off rare colors, and even swap items. There is an annual sea glass convention in America, which brings together enthusiasts of this finite resource that will disappear once we learn not to discard trash into the waves anymore.

There are countless beautiful beaches that double as good sea glass hunting beaches out there, and quite often, people keep their locations to themselves. I have tried to give you a selection of locations, from oceans to lakes, north to south, east to west, the best beaches, from sandy beaches to pebbly beaches, hoping that you might be close to one of them in the near future. 1. Glass Beach, MacKerricher State Park

Fort Bragg sea glass beach is located in Northern California a few hours north of San Francisco and is filled with all the sea glass colors. Glass Beach is adjacent to MacKerricher State Park and is one of three beaches in Fort Bragg that were official dumpsites in the 1940s. As a result, this sea glass beach is probably the best and most unique sea glass hunting beach in the world.

Fort Brag Beach is made up of sea glass instead of sand. The problem is, while you can look and touch, collecting is strongly discouraged (in fact, some sources even say it’s illegal).

Instead of picking up the admittedly rather tiny baubles, you can visit the International Sea Glass Museum nearby. It has some quite unusual sea glass finds on display, which are sure to spur you on.

2. Davenport Beach

This beach is known as the Seaham Beach (see below) of the U.S., but it’s more dangerous and more difficult to access. Just north of Santa Cruz in California , the coast has sheer cliffs and a very devious and rough sea. If you do go, always be on the lookout and heed warnings, and prepare to get a proper soaking — many beachcombers and sea glass collectors have been known to wear wetsuits when out seaglassing.

But if you are lucky, you can find multicolored glass that, as legend has it, dates back to the 1970s when a huge flood whisked away containers of baubles from a glass-blowing studio called Lundberg down the San Vicente Creek that are still being washed up on the Davenport Beach today.

3. Grant Park Beach

Go for a walk away from the popular sandy bathing beach toward the scenic, pebbly beach close to the forest, and you will soon realize that you don’t need an ocean to make perfect sea glass like the one in Milwaukee . This secret (or now not-so-secret) spot on Lake Michigan rewards beachcombers with all types of sea glass in many colors, plus bottle stoppers, marbles, and smoothed pottery shards, which are collected by many with as much enthusiasm as glass.

4. Sea Glass Beach And Black Bay Beach

These beautiful sea glass beaches are located at Ireland Island South in Sandy’s Parish off Cockburn Road, and, according to locals, the sea glass here is a result of a former glass factory nearby. You can combine your vacation adventures here by snorkeling between Black Bay Beach and Sea Glass Beach, which might just come in handy since at high tide, the beach nearly disappears.

There are reports that because of too many cruise visitors it is no longer permitted for people to collect sea glass, but searching and finding rather than keeping it is the best part of the fun, anyway. For sea glass buffs who aim to find sea glass and keep it, this beach will be a letdown.

5. Seaham Beach

This is my personal favorite sea glass beach, not only for its high cliffs and seemingly endless views and being a fun place to take the dog for a walk, but also for its famous multicolored sea glass. I have found white pieces with green and blue stripes, a green piece with a slash of red, and more. The secret is that there used to be a glass factory just up the coast that did a lot of experimental pieces and obviously discarded all the mistakes straight into the sea.

Unfortunately, this beach is incredibly famous now, and the chance of finding something special decreases by the day as people travel far and wide to this beach.

6. Bovisand Beach, Bovisand

Unlike other European sea glass beaches , this is more of a couple of rocky coves where you can imagine old-time smugglers landing by night. Just outside the city limits of Plymouth, the beach is full of rocks and rock pools full of little crabs and fish.

Higher up, you find coarse sand that, upon closer inspection, holds quite a few sea glass gems. This being a coast shaped by rough weather and high tides, the finds get replenished regularly.

If you are visiting Morocco and get to tour the UNESCO site of Essaouira , be sure to look past the ramparts and step out to the secluded rock pool-type beach. Not only can you channel your inner marine biologist as there are plenty of crabs and sea cucumbers around, you can also find sea glass of all sorts and sea-worn porcelain pieces. But be sure to wear some decent shoes, as the rocks are very sharp.

8. Steklyashka Beach, Ussuri Bay

If Siberia is not on your way somewhere, then it might just be worth going out of your way to explore this beach, especially if you are a dedicated beachcomber or sea glass enthusiast. As with Glass Beach in Fort Bragg , this beach is practically made up of sea glass, shimmering in all the colors imaginable. And the pieces are larger than what you’ll find at the Fort Bragg beach. This bucket-list beach is a 30-minute drive outside Vladivostok. Go on a sunny day, and you’ll be blinded by the glittering. Go in winter, and you have the magical contrast of white snow against the sea glass.

9. Sea Glass Beach

Should you ever find yourself outside Naha, the capital of Okinawa Island in Japan, don’t miss going to this sand beach. Reportedly, this used to be a bit of a dumping ground when the island was occupied by Americans after the Second World War. After all these years of littering, the broken bottles and miscellanea have been washed smooth, and today the beach is scattered with colorful sea glass gems instead. This beach yields rare colors such as yellow, reds, and purples instead of the more common white, browns, and greens.

10. Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach is famed for its colorful Victorian beach huts and its lovely location just outside Melbourne. But if you keep walking with Melbourne’s skyline behind you, you will come to a small cove perfect for sea glass. If you keep walking, up the hill, across the parking lot, and down again on the other side, the sandy beach is also a superb sea glass hunting ground, especially after a high tide or a storm. I have found many old glass bottle stoppers there, so keep a careful lookout.

As for the best time to go seaglassing: Try to visit as the tide is going out so you’ll be there for low tide. And if you can visit after a spring low tide or a storm, all the better . And please respect the local laws: If the beach glass is for looking only, then try your best not to succumb to temptation.

If you don’t want to head to Sea Glass Island, you can also look for sea glass on the beaches of Aruba. Arashi Beach and Malmok Beach are both popular places to search for it. Other popular options include Grapefield Beach , Dos Playa , and Anducurai Beach , but any beach can have sea glass wash up.

Can you take sea glass from Aruba home?

Surprisingly, taking sea glass back home from Aruba is legal , unlike taking sand, shells, or coral, which is illegal. The main difference is that sea glass is a manmade element and not a natural part of Aruba’s environment. Because of this, sea glass hunting in Aruba is quite popular, and it makes a great souvenir.

That being said, remember to only take a few special pieces, if you must take any, to leave the island intact for future visitors. There have been reports of some visitors leaving with buckets of sea glass which will slowly deteriorate the island.

Tips for Visiting Sea Glass Island in Aruba

If you decide to give it a visit. There are just a few things to keep in mind before you go.

1. Wear water shoes or sturdy gym shoes.

As the island is covered in sea glass and pieces of coral, you’ll find it is rough on bare feet. Plan to wear sturdy shoes, something stronger than flip-flops. This will protect your feet from any sea glass that may not be quite as rounded as other pieces. Remember… you’re walking on glass!

2. Plan for the environment on Sea Glass Island.

You are headed to an island with no shade and no facilities. As such, you will want to take everything you need with you. This includes drinks and snacks, and of course sunscreen. You may also want to take a zip lock bag to collect a few pieces of sea glass to take home.

3. Leave the island as you found it.

While you legally can take as much sea glass as you wish from the island, remember that this is a naturally occurring island and any glass you take can take a long time to replenish. Over time people taking excessive glass can damage the beauty of the island. As such, take no sea glass or just a few special pieces.

Go In Search of Sea Glass in Rincón

Sea glass hunting is a hobby I enjoy whenever we go to a beach. Some areas and beaches are more fruitful than others. Rincón is one of those bountiful places that have a number of different beaches that offer a variety of shapes, sizes, and some unusual colors of sea glass. I’ll tell you where to look, and what we have found.

What Is It?

Sea glass (or beach glass) is pieces of glass that have been naturally worked by the ocean into little treasures. Over the years, glass (from bottles or other sources) have found their way into the sea or other bodies of water. Due to wave action, the glass gets tumbled over the sand and small rocks. This constant rubbing, over time, causes the glass to become rounded and etched or “frosted” into pieces of beauty.

Due to more anti-littering campaigns, landfills, and recycling/reusing of glass, fewer glass bottles end up in the sea, so finding sea glass is more difficult now than in years past.

Fortunately, for us sea glass collectors, Puerto Rico has not really gotten the hang of “give a hoot, don’t pollute”, so you can still find lots here! While Rincón locals try to keep the beaches generally clean of trash, years of broken glass already in the ocean, bottles washing down rivers to the sea, and beach parties all ensure there will be sea glass treasures for years to come (both a blessing and a curse).

What We’ve Found

When we stay over in Rincón, I go “hunting” at different beaches a number of times each day (of course trying to hit lower tide). We generally stay in the southern part of Rincón, around the Corcega or Barrera areas. I usually spend a few hours each day walking up and down (from Barrera Beach until past Corcega). This area has very little surf year round, so it is great for swimming. However, it is not so great a quickly making sea glass. But there is plenty to be found.

The pieces of glass here tend to be larger, and as I went closer to Corcega, I noticed more “almost-ready” sea glass. It seemed that I spent a lot of time picking up not finished pieces and throwing them back into the ocean for more tumbling. It was hard to do — the ecological part of me said throw it in the garbage to keep the glass/trash off the beach. But the crafty/collector in me said to throw it back to it has more time to make the prize for someone else to find!

Rincón is known for getting late afternoon rains. These storms loosen up and uncover all sorts of old bottles and glass things way up stream, and they wash down rivers into the sea. The Barrera and Corcega areas are perfect for finding lots of old glass bottles and broken pieces of bottles, and loads of tumbled glass due to the plentiful little rivers and streams. I found numerous round and square bottoms of bottles, and even whole or almost whole bottles.

“Baby aspirin” jars are easy to identify. By researching the jar-bottom markings on other fragments, I was able to id 100-year old jelly jars, and a Clorox bottle that is at least 50 years old! I enjoy the identification process almost as much as finding the glass!

Since it seems most of the sea glass in this area is from old “trash”, besides the usual “clear”, green and brown, I found lots of blues (from things like Milk of Magnesia and mason jars), rare opaque whites (from cold cream jars) and lots of light green pieces (from old Coca-Cola and other soda bottles).

We also checked out the beaches north of town — Steps Beach and Maria’s Beach. We found a small handful of glass on each of these beaches, but the pieces were very small. If I had little time, I would skip these beaches for sea glass hunting, unless you are visiting them for another reason (snorkeling or surf lessons). And who knows, maybe the day you go it will be more fruitful. It never hurts to look!

I think the most fruitful beaches for really etched rounded pieces (though smaller) are on the “northern” coast of Rincón (from Spanish Wall eastward). There is always high surf here, so the glass gets thoroughly rolled. In the past we found loads of smaller pieces up at Spanish Wall beach. One afternoon, we went to the “northern” side of Rincón. We parked at Sandy Beach, in a small wooded parking grove. The minute I hit the sand from the steps, there is a sand flat that must get water some high tides — it was loaded with quality glass. Of course I didn’t stop there, but had to check the waterfront, too. It was a very fruitful search. I found lots of smaller pieces, mainly what people would need for jewelry. I had more than I could carry in both hands after just about 30 minutes.

We later moved the car and parked to the far right of Sandy Beach (Antonio’s Beach) at Casa Isleno, and hunted to the east. Again we found loads. We marked a really fruitful area for us — when we were there, it was a sand flat above a posa (tidal pool area). We spent about an hour walking this area, I was hunting glass and Ray was taking pictures! Half a baggie-ful here.

We ran out of time to check out Pools Beach, but I assume it would be as fruitful as the Spanish Wall and Sandy Beach.

Up here we did find mostly white, with some greens and browns. But there were a few nice color treasures like ambers, chartreuse and blues. I also found a piece of amethyst glass (nice prize!).

Note that in the winter months (November to March) Rincón gets much rougher surf than in summer, so you should have really good luck then, but then again, there may be more people around hunting for it then. There is no way of know what you will find. Happy Hunting!

Tips for Hunting Sea Glass

Go at low tide, so there is maximum beach to check and fresh glass deposited. Check the high tide mark and sand flat areas where really high tides can bring treasure up onto the beach. Check in areas where little rocks collect or tidal pools. Go after there has been a storm or high surf — these higher waves may bring up treasures from depths or down from the mountains. Beaches with constant high surf will make pieces smaller but really etched. Check areas by streams/rivers where they enter the sea for unusual finds that might have washed down from the mountains.

Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. I wear a hat but no sunglasses, just so I can see the glass better, but some kind of sun protection is important. Bring something to carry your treasures home in — I use plastic ziplocs.

For safety sake, try to be aware of your surroundings. Bring another person with you, since you’ll be busy focusing on the beach … you might not see what’s going on around you.

The so-called kayaking experience was a dismal disappointment, deviating significantly from the enticing portrayal on their website. The "clear" waters were nothing more than murky plastic kayaks launching from a filthy site into contaminated water. The advertised serene river was, in reality, choppy gulf water devoid of corals, reefs, or any marine life - just green water overrun with seaweed. Our guide, an elderly gentleman with an inaudible voice he needed an assistant or a partner, left us almost directionless. Despite being a group of eight on four boats, communication with him was futile, I had genuine concerns for his well-being. We had to carry the boats from the street to the filthy shore. Attempting a group photo was futile, as the guide's hands covered the iPhone lens, and despite us guiding him through taking another photo, he couldn't . No office existed; the provided address led us to the Clearwater Library, where the librarian expressed irritation at the misuse of their location by the kaiak people/person. Boat paperwork and boat transportation were our responsibilities, as the boat owner met us on the street. He had no one to assist him!! The sole efficiency demonstrated was the ability to extract an exorbitant sum of money for this frustrating ordeal. If there were a rating lower than one star, it would be well-deserved. Don't be beguiled by website images; this experience is unequivocally unworthy. Refer to the attached pictures for visual evidence.

As someone who loves outdoor activities, I was excited to try out this company with my family. It was quickly clear what biases the staff and workers had towards my family. Disappointed is an understatement and I will not be returning nor do I recommend to any family of color.

Was not bad but far from great. Paid for two people you should get 2 kayaks. But No you MUST share a kayak. Silly, they just a cheap outfitter to cut theirs cost in half make people share rather then buy individual kayaks.

If your expecting a 2.5 hour tour, don't get your hopes up. You will only be touring for 1.5 hours and have to go back early because the captain has "8 other people waiting" to use the boats your in for the time your already paying to be in that kayak. The tour was a total of 2 hours total only because the was the boat launching out of the ramp we were going into and they had already occupied the space. The Capetian was very informative, made sure everyone stayed together and hydrated but not worth the price for a 1.5 hour tour. Tremendously disappointed.

Even though it's surrounded by water and mountains – and there's no road into town – Juneau is one of the most visited ports in Alaska, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. You'll find plenty to do in Alaska's capital, including whale watching tours, salmon bakes and more.

Mendenhall Glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, so many tours include a visit to the Tongass National Forest to view the 12-mile-long sheet of blue ice. Skagway is another busy and popular cruise port in Alaska. It's one of the most popular towns on the Inside Passage itinerary; its fascinating Klondike Gold Rush history dates back to 1897. Take notice of the historic false-front shops reminiscent of the gold rush days as you explore. Many of these buildings are part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and you may even see people strolling down the streets dressed in period costumes.

White Pass & Yukon Route

One of the top-rated attractions in Skagway is the White Pass Summit Scenic Railroad journey through Alaska's wilderness. The narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – an honor shared by the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Thrill-seekers (who love heights) will jump at the chance to ride the world's largest and longest zip line, which sits more than 1,300 feet above sea level at the top of Icy Strait Point. The ride to the summit on the SkyGlider mountaintop gondola is also a rush, but the real excitement comes as you zoom down 5,330-foot zip lines with five other riders at 60 mph – with views of the forest below and Glacier Bay National Park in the distance. A break-activated landing on the beach brings riders safely back to the ground. The price also includes unlimited rides on the gondola.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final. While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut. Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so. But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime. Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30). Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date. Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles: Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30. In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans: Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship. The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize. The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it. Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth. There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat. Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games. They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL. They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
