ALL HAIL SPAMALOT!

Peter Marks of The Washington Post exclaims it’s “gloriously hilarious! The jokes crackle, and the production numbers sparkle. SPAMALOT is funnier than ever.” Charles Isherwood of The Wall Street Journal raves the show is “deliriously funny. SPAMALOT is blazing like a burst of summer sunshine as winter draws near, it’s pure glee.” And Jesse Green writes “it’s a blissful Broadway revival” and awards it a New York Times Critic’s Pick!

Everything that makes a great knight in the theatre is here, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake.

Music, Lyrics & Book

(music, lyrics & book).

is one of the original six creators of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” which began life on BBCTV in 1969. They eventually made five feature films, including two of the top ten comedy movies of all time. Eric, together with longtime collaborator and Composer John Du Prez, adapted The Holy Grail into the record-breaking musical Monty Python’s Spamalot , which ran for almost five years on Broadway. It was nominated for 13 Tonys, winning 3, including Best Director for Mike Nichols and the Tony Award® for Best Musical in 2005, plus a Drama Desk Award and a Grammy® for the authors. They then created a Comic Oratorio Not The Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy based on Monty Python’s Life of Brian , which premiered in Toronto, and played The Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall and was eventually filmed with most of the Pythons at The Royal Albert Hall for the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. Eric wrote, directed and starred in The Rutles , the world’s first mockumentary, and in 2012 he sang his own song “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life” before a billion people at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2014 he directed and appeared alongside conductor John Du Prez in the Monty Python final reunion show One Down Five To Go , which sold out London’s O2 Arena for ten nights. In 2018, his Sortabiography Always Look on the Bright of Life became a New York Times Best seller. In 2019 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which he survived thanks to early diagnosis and great doctors. Following his appearance on “The Masked Singer” in 2022, he launched The Bright Side Fund (Standup2Cancer/Eric Idle) to help fund Research. His musical play What About Dick? with songs by JDP is currently playing on Netflix.

John Du Prez

Born in 1946, he was so lucky to grow up in the World Heritage City of Bath with its International Festival and rich musical life. In 1965, armed with a bed roll and tape recorder, he collected and studied Sicilian folk music, which won him a Trevelyan Scholarship to Oxford. There, he studied Mandarin Chinese (of course) and spent a year in Hong Kong during which he was Principal Horn of the HK Philharmonic. Then on to London to gain a music degree and ARCM diploma and join the staff of London University. Meeting the Pythons in 1978, he started writing film music ( Life of Brian ) and having multiple chart success with Modern Romance . Their club hit “Everybody Salsa” won MR the New York DJ Syndicate 1981 award for Best New Band. He has scored more than 20 feature films including The Meaning of Life , A Private Function , A Fish Called Wanda , Once Bitten , UHF and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (with its platinum soundtrack album). Other Python projects include the Contractual Obligation Album , Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl and editing The Monty Python Song Book . In 2001, he co-wrote Monty Python’s Spamalot with Eric Idle which won them both Grammys®, the 2005 Tony for Best Musical and a Tony nomination for the score. He conducted their comic oratorio Not The Messiah on a world tour, which included Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl (LA Phil) and finally the Albert Hall (BBC Symphony) for the Python 40th Anniversary. He was MD for the London O2 Arena farewell concerts - Monty Python Live (Mostly) - and recently scored the BAFTA Award-winning animation series “The Clangers”. For more info see johnduprez.com.

‘Spamalot’ Review: An Overdone Broadway Revival Opts for Excess Over Ingenuity

Spamalot review Broadway

It may be appropriate for a musical with “spam” in the title to feel canned. But it’s a shame that the first Broadway revival of “ Monty Python ’s Spamalot ,” now playing at the St. James Theatre, struggles to find anything fresh about material covered in a half-century of dust.

Popular on Variety

Aside from a few timely winks to TikTok and Ozempic, the book and lyrics by Monty Python vet Eric Idle (who collaborated on the music with John Du Prez) leans heavily on nostalgia for various layers of IP dating all the way back to the fifth century. The action is set on the heels of a plague, but any resonance with the present seems purely incidental.

A meta parody of Arthurian heroism and showbiz conventions, “Spamalot” is an accumulation of bits, propelled by giddy vibes rather than an actual plot. It’s almost an hour in before God tasks King Arthur ( James Monroe Iglehart ) “to set an example to people in these dark times” by finding the Holy Grail, or metaphorically, what fulfills his soul (or something?). He is, of course, joined by a band of bumbling knights, and intermittently by the Lady of the Lake (Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer), whose vanity is stretched into a thin, repeated punchline.

Though Arthur is the comedy’s straight man, Iglehart can seem like he’s not in on the joke, and frankly a bit lost, while Kritzer alternately pushes too hard or retreats from a role that demands overassurance. (None of the performances benefit from a memory of the original production, directed by Mike Nichols, whose stars included Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce and a breakout Sara Ramirez.)

The physical staging is a dizzying sensory overload, to the point that even obvious sight gags (severed limbs, a beheaded rabbit puppet) get lost in the chaos. The set, which resembles a pop-up storybook on the bottom and a frenetic video game overhead, feels uneasy and overdone, with gaudy animation adding unnecessary spectacle (the scenic and projection design is by Paul Tate dePoo III). The costumes by Jen Caprio take an all-you-can-fasten approach to accents including fur, fringe, feathers, flowers, bells, bows and beads — sometimes in a single look.

The production’s overdesign is a symptom of the broader problem, which is a lack of ingenuity in favor of sheer excess. It is a paradox of throwing money onstage that it can easily come at the expense of creativity. There may be a way to reanimate “Spamalot,” and for Monty Python’s random surrealism to infect a new generation and confront the current moment. But that grail is not to be found here.

On a beaucoup rit! Il y a des belles interactions avec le public. Il y a aussi un service de voiturier à 10€ à l’entrée. Dommage qu’on ne l’ai pas su avant d’aller dans un parking plus cher.
