Miles Russell, 15, makes history again, ties for 20th on Korn Ferry
Two days after he became the youngest player ever to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour, Miles Russell notched another pretty cool achievement for a 15-year-old.
He finished tied for 20th in the event.
Russell, the reigning American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year, closed with a 5-under 66 on Sunday at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, finishing 6 shots behind winner Tim Widing . He became the youngest player since at least 1983 to finish in the top 25 in a Korn Ferry Tour or PGA Tour event.
An amateur playing on a sponsor's exemption, Russell won't pocket any money for the finish. But he did qualify for next week's Korn Ferry event, the Veritex Bank Championship in Texas, as a result of finishing in the top 25.
What a week for Miles Russell đ pic.twitter.com/eWqa8CmQjD â Korn Ferry Tour (@KornFerryTour) April 21, 2024
"It was an awesome week," he said. "It was a blast."
Russell was outside the top 25 entering Sunday, but he surged 28 spots up the leaderboard thanks to a final round that included seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch.
"You're always nervous," he said of the final round. "So definitely the start of the round [I had nerves], but they kind of relaxed as we got kind of settled in and maybe a little bit more toward the end. But it was good.
"I just kind of try to go with the flow and take it as it comes to me and just try and stay cool."
The closing 66 matched his low round of the event; he posted the same score Friday to make history on the PGA Tour's developmental circuit. At 15 years, 5 months and 17 days, he became the youngest ever to make the cut; Gipper Finau , the younger brother of PGA Tour star Tony Finau , had the previous record, doing so at the 2006 Utah Championship, when he was 16 years, 20 days.
Big achievements on the golf course, though, are nothing new for Russell.
In 2023, the left-hander from Florida won the Junior PGA Championship by 7 shots and became the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship. He won the AJGA Player of the Year award at a younger age than Tiger Woods .
Last month, he lost out in a playoff in a Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
China's Guan Tianlang is the youngest to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. He was 14 when he made the cut in the 2013 Masters, playing as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion.
Widing became a first-time Korn Ferry winner, beating Steven Fisk and Patrick Cover in a playoff.

Lewis began the day 3-under on the front nine to hold a two-shot lead over GĂłmez entering the turn, but GĂłmez was hot on Lewis’ trail after going 5 under on the front nine. GĂłmez slipped however on 15 and 16 with back-to-back bogeys, widening Lewis’ lead as Lewis shot birdies on 15-17. GĂłmez finished the final round 6-under 66 in second place.

Kramer Hickok finished Monday with a 65â tied with Lewis for best score of the dayâ to take solo third at 16 under.
Lanto Griffin, who sat in second two strokes behind Lewis after the third round, ended Monday 2-over 74 after finishing the back nine 3 over.
Griffin was 1 over for the day as he approached the ninth hole, but looked like he could regain some of lost ground after he recorded an eagle on the par-5 9th to jump to fourth through nine holes. Griffin tumbled even further on the back nine, carding a triple bogey, double bogey, bogey and two birdies to finish T-7 at 12 under
First and second-round leader Chris Baker , who slid down the leaderboard with a 73 on Sunday, shot a final-round 70 to finish T-4 with Tyler Duncan and David Hearn at 13 under.

Korn Ferry Tour player beats Scottie Schefflerâs course record at Texas Rangers Golf Club
Minnesota-native frankie capan iii shot a 13-under 58, tying the second-lowest score in korn ferry tour history..

In Thursdayâs opening round of the Korn Ferry Tourâs Veritex Bank Championship , Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58, tying the second-lowest score in Korn Ferry Tour history. If that wasnât enough, he also broke the course record at Texas Rangers Golf Club held by none other than Scottie Scheffler .
âWhen someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, youâve got to take advantage,â 24-year-old Capan said after.
Scheffler , who has won four of the last five PGA Tour tournaments including the Masters , set his record while playing with friends in May of 2020.

Capanâs 58 was just one stroke short of the all-time Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental tour for the PGA tour, record, which Cristobal Del Solar set at the Astara Golf Championship earlier this year. A native of Minnesota, Capan is just the second player to shoot a 58 in the tourâs history after Stephan Jaeger did it in 2016.

The Texas Rangers Golf Club is a par-71, 7,010-yard course. The only other time Capan has carded a sub-60 score was in the final round of his high school championship, where he shot 59. Jim Furyk shot the only 58 in PGA Tour history in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Miles Russell continues to prove himself on the biggest of stages.
The 15-year-old Floridian earned a spot in last weekâs LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour and took full advantage of the opportunity by finishing in a tie for 15th. That paved the way for another exemption in Texas, where Russell opened the Veritex Bank Championship with a 3-under 68.
The left-hander opened his round with eight straight pars but finally broke through with a birdie at the par-5 9th. A long-range bomb from 30 feet followed at 11, and another birdie at the par-3 12th came minutes after. Suddenly, Russell sat at 3-under and in a solid position through 12 holes.
Russell made another birdie at the drivable, par-4 16th, which measured 329 yards on Thursday. But he made a costly mistake on the final hole, a par-5, as he three-putted from 25 feet for a bogey six.
Still, Russell played beautifully from tee to green, hitting 13-of-14 fairways and 16-of-18 greens. He scrambled nicely, too, going 2-for-2 when he missed the putting surface with his approaches.
But at the end of the day, Russell is 10 strokes behind Frankie Capan III, who shot 58 and broke Scottie Schefflerâs course record in the process.
Still, Russell has a great chance to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour againâone week after becoming the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour since 1983.
He will likely need another round in the 60s to make the cut again, but knowing how much talent this 15-year-old has, that is most certainly within the realm of possibilities.

Korn Ferry Tour Player Shoots 13-under 58 in Texas
Frankie Capan III fired the third sub-60 score of the season on the Korn Ferry Tour.
- Author: John Schwarb
Thereâs a new member of the sub-60 club in pro golf, on a tour that has seen a couple already this season.
Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58 on Thursday at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in the first round of the Veritex Bank Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour. He made four birdies in a row from the 2nd through 5th holes, then hung red numbers on eight straight holes from the 9th through 16th. In all he had 11 birdies and one eagle.
Capan parred his final two holes including the par-5 18th.
The Korn Ferry Tour had two sub-60 scores earlier this year at the Astara Golf Championship, as Cristobal Del Solar shot 57 and Aldrich Potgieter shot 59 on a par-70, 6,254-yard course at elevation in Colombia. Capan shot his 58 on a par-71, 7,010-yard course.
There has been one 58 shot on the PGA Tour, by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
Capan, 24, turned pro two years ago and attended Florida Gulf Coast University. The Minnesota native 298th in the OWGR with a high finish of third in 30 career KFT starts.
Capan led by three in the morning wave. Trent Phillips shot 61 and trailed by three.

Miles Russell posts seventh consecutive under-par score but misses Korn Ferry Tour cut
When it was all over, an 18th hole bogey didnât matter for 15-year-old Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach.
Russell hit his second shot into the water on Friday at the par-5 ninth hole of the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, and with a closing bogey at the Vertitex Bank Championship, fell one shot below the cut line at the time he finished.
But when players who had been unable to complete their second rounds returned on Saturday morning, scores dipped lower and the cut line moved to 7-under, tying a record for the lowest in Korn Ferry history. That means even if Russell had birdied the last, he wouldn't have made the cut
Russell (70) shot 4-under 138 and ended his second professional tournament in a tie for 111th.
Miles Russell was happy with his ball-striking
Coming on the heels of a tie for 20th last week in the LECOM Suncoast Open in Lakewood Ranch, Russell could still smile after his finish in Texas.
"I don't when was the last time I had this much fun on the golf course," he said during his post-round interview sessions. "Just taking that experience and knowing that this is kind of what you have to look forward to is definitely something you might start practicing a little harder for."
Russell hit the ball just as well, if not better, in his first two rounds at the Rangers Golf Course. He hit 23 of 28 fairways (82.1 percent) and 28 of 35 greens (77.8 percent) but got up-and-down for par after missing greens on 4 of 8 times and didn't putt quite as well as the week before.
"This week I hit it great and played well, just didn't quite get the ball to go in the hole," he said. "I'd say I give myself an A for last week and maybe a B-minus this week," he said. "It wasn't quite all there this week but I played great last week. It will be something I remember for a while."
Russell made a late run at the cut line
Russell, who began his round at No. 10, had birdied Nos. 7 and 8 on putts of 3 and 34 feet to get inside the cut line.
After splitting the middle of the fairway with his tee shot at No. 9, Russell pushed his second shot into a water hazard on the right-front of the green, dropped, hit his fourth shot to within 10 feet and missed the par attempt.
The field was chased off the course late Friday morning because of approaching thunderstorms At the time of the weather delay, Russell was 1-over through six holes and 10 shots behind leader Frankie Capan III, who shot 58 in the first round.
When play resumed following the delay, Russell bogeyed No. 16 after hitting his tee shot into a penalty area and he made two pars to turn at 1-over for the day and 2-under for the tournament.
However, he rebounded with birdies at Nos. 1 and 3 (wrapped around a bogey at No. 3) and gave himself a chance with his birdies at Nos. 7 and 8.
Russell was spot-in with ball striking in first round
In Thursdayâs first round, Russell was near top form with his ball striking. He tied for first in the field by hitting 13 of 14 fairways and hit 16 of 18 greens to tie for eighth in the field.
He parred his first eight holes before breaking the ice with a 7-foot birdie putt at No. 9. Russell followed with a 29-foot birdie putt at No. 11, a 13-footer for birdie at No. 12 and a 7-footer for birdie at No. 16 after coming up just short and right of the driveable par-4 with a 323-yard clout off the tee.
Russell chipped onto the green from 68 feet away to set up his birdie.
Russell was coming off a historical week
Russell became the youngest player in history to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event at the LECOM Suncoast Open when he opened with rounds of 668-66, then became the youngest in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event to finish among the top-20 when he followed a third-round 70 with a 66 on Sunday.
That earned him a spot in the Veritex Championship under the Korn Ferry rule of giving players who finish among the top-25 a spot in the next weekâs tournament.
A day later, Russell found out that he had been awarded a spot in the PGA Tour's Butterfield Bermuda Championship Nov. 14-17, for winning the AJGA Player of the Year Award in 2023.
Russell has been under par in six rounds in pro events
Despite missing the cut, Russell shot his sixth consecutive under-par round in professional events over the past two months, a streak that began when he had a 67 in a Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open. Russell lost in a four-for-one playoff to get into the main draw of the tournament.
Russell's scoring average in those pro tournaments is 67.85.
For the foreseeable future, Russell will return to a series of high-level junior and amateur tournaments, such as U.S. Amateur, U.S. Junior Boys, a U.S. Open Sectional qualifier and later in the summer, a chance to become the first to ever repeat as the Junior Players champion.
Russell became the youngest Junior Players champion in tournament history in 2023 and was the first from the First Coast to win the tournament.

Frankie Capan III shoots 13-under 58 in Korn Ferry Tour event at Texas Rangers Golf Club
ARLINGTON, Texas â Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58 on Thursday in the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club to tie the Korn Ferry Tour record for relation to par and match the second-lowest score in tour history.
Capan played an eight-hole stretch in 9 under, making an eagle on the par-5 ninth and following with seven straight birdies. He two-putted for par on the par-4 17th, then hit into a fairway bunker on the par-5 18th and ended up saving par with a 7-foot putt.
âWhenever youâre out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could,â Capan said. âI know this course might be gettable the next few days, so just tried to get as many as I could.â
Cristobal Del Solar shot the lowest round in Korn Ferry Tour history with a 13-under 57 in February in the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia. There have been 13 sub-60 rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour, six in the last 370 days
The 58 broke the course record of 59 set by Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in a casual round with friends on May 3, 2020.
âWhen someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, youâve got to take advantage,â Capan said.
The 24-year-old Capan, making his 31st Korn Ferry Tour star, played at the University of Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast He previously shot 59 in the final round of a high school state championship
âI shot 59 before, so I thought, you know, may as well break that,â Capan said. âIt was a lot of fun out there. After the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at.â
Trent Phillips was second after a 61. Tim Widing, the winner of the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, had a 62.
The wind gusted to 30 mph on the mostly cloudy day, with a high temperature of 78.
