The cobbled climbs of the Tour of Flanders, Ronde’s epic soul

At only 694 meters above sea level, Signal de Botrange, near Liège, is the highest point in Belgium – in fact, the highest in all of the Benelux. There are no mountains in the country, but cycling enthusiasts know that there is nothing more wrong than considering Belgium as just flat land. And the reason is very simple, the cobbled climbs.

An iconic, immediate image of the Tour of Flanders, these short but extremely steep paved ascents are brutal. That they can easily go beyond 20% gradients, accumulating considerable altitude gain in a few hundred meters. The 2020 edition of Ronde van Vlaanderen will offer seventeen climbs over a 243.3km course for the men’s race and eleven climbs over 135.6km for the women’s. Why and how they are made in this specific way and which are the most famous ones?

To better understand the deep meaning of the Flanders’ orography, our journey starts more than 250 millions years ago, at the end of the Paleozoic period, the era when ancient mountain chains started to heavily erode and get leveled thanks to the rivers. Through the millennia, the powerful actions of water dug deep short valleys on average gentle plans. The resulting landscape has a continuous series of depressions and ridges; between one and the other there are small plateaus, usually covered by woods – and that’s the typical panorama of the Tour of Flanders!

Cobblestones, or koppen, are part of daily life in Flanders and in Dutch slang language they’re called kinderkoppen – meaning "children's heads" – because of their shape. Paving roads with cobblestones was a good compromise between efficiency and cost in the past because it let the path be used all year long from the dry summer to the snowy winter, preventing the build-up of mud since it could better drain the water falling from the frequent rain in Belgium. They also created better traction for horses to climb the steep ascends.

So, good for horses, but what about bikes? The cobbled climbs are known for their variety of shapes and surfaces ranging from gently square and rectangular to the fearsome triangular with sharp sides, which are no friend to bicycle tyres!

But what may seem an unsuitable environment has become the perfect terrain for epic races, over the years. Cobblestones are an impressive additional difficulty for the riders, requiring specific skill to ride efficiently, avoiding falling or punctures. A challenge which calls out the strongest women and men of the group. Reading through the race’s rolls of honour you won’t find lucky and undeserved winners.

Ronde van Vlaanderen is the cycling race with the record of most consecutive editions taking place continuously since 1919; it didn’t stop even during WWII. As a Monument Classic, it’s also one of the most charming appointments of the UCI World Tour and has become synonymous with the combination of steep hills and cobblestones throughout its valleys and villages. The 2020 Tour of Flanders will offer some of the most iconic cobbled climbs.

Following their departure in Antwerp the riders will get a first taste of cobbles at around 85km with the pavé on the Lippenhovestraat and Paddestraat, and will face the famous Kortekeer after 131km. This cobbled climb comes at a crucial point in the race because it’s when usually the pace intensifies: that’s because of his maximum gradient of 17.1% and because it opens a quick succession of climbs with Eikenberg, the cobbled Holleweg, Wolvenberg, the cobbled Haaghoek, Leberg, Berendries and Valkenberg within just 29 kilometres.

The Oude Kwaremont is not so steep, averaging just 4% (11% max), but it’s feared because of its length: 2.2 kilometers on the cobblestones never end. After an easier first 600 metres, the next 500 are tougher with a maximum gradient of 11% and uneven surface which can make a lot of trouble for the less skilled riders. The ascent passes near the church of Kwaremont village and becomes almost flat, reaching the altitude of 111 metres (93 of which are gained on the climb) on the top. The Slovakian Peter Sagan attacked there wearing the rainbow jersey in 2016.

In the 2020 edition, the Oude Kwaremont will be climbed twice – with 55 and 17km remaining – in a combination with another legendary ascend, the Paterberg, which offers the opposite character: only 360 metres long with an average slope of 12.9% and maximum of 20.3%. The climb was unpaved and just used by tractors until 1986: the town council of Kluisbergen decided to cover it up with asphalt, but a local farmer, a big fan of the Ronde, suggested retaining and using the cobblestones. Curiously, Greg Van Avermaet (CCC) attacked on the Paterberg to win the virtual Tour of Flanders last April.

The legendary and brutal Koppenberg (600 metres at an average 11.6%) reaches the incredible maximum gradient of 22% and is often the decisive climb. Originally it was placed very far from the finish line (at 185km to go in 2006) but recently it was moved to the last section. Recommended to the organization by the Flandrien Walter Godefroot who discovered this really demanding climb while training, the Koppenberg debuted in 1976 and claimed a high profile victim, Eddy Merckx. Only the first five riders managed to ride all the way up, but the Cannibal got in trouble on the steepest part and had to walk to the top like a cyclo-cross specialist. At the end of the race he described the climb as: “A nightmare, one of the worst of my life”.

Riders fight against gravity and sometimes surrender and start walking. There are painful crashes, and only the toughest competitors are able to accelerate when the gradient becomes insane: De Ronde created immortal memories and smiled upon home champions from the first winner Paul Deman (1913) to Merckx but also for Rik Van Steenbergen, who became the youngest winner ever at 19 years old in 1944, and to Andrei Tchmil who was the oldest, at 37, in the 2000 edition. In 2012, Tom Boonen became the last Belgian and in 2014 the Swiss Fabian Cancellara the last foreigner to win three times, while the Italian Fiorenzo Magni is the only rider who have won three times in a row (1949 to 1951). The Tour of Flanders for Women was established in 2004 with the Russian Zoulfia Zabirova celebrating the inaugural victory, the last edition went to Italian Marta Bastianelli, who won wearing the European Champion’s jersey.

Who will follow the Italians Bastianelli (Alé BTC Ljubljana) and Alberto Bettiol (EF Pro Cycling) into the Ronde’s rolls of honour?

The 2022 Tour of Flanders podium (l-r): Dylan van Baarle, Mathieu van der Poel and Valentin Madouas

Mathieu van der Poel tops Van Baarle in a Tour of Flanders thriller

Tour of Flanders - how it unfolded

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won a thrilling Tour of Flanders in the closing metres as a two-rider battle turned into a four-rider sprint in Oudenaarde.

The Dutchman, who was runner-up last year, fought under the 1km kite with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), but allowed chasers Dylan van Baarle  (Ineos Grenadiers) and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) to make the catch in the final hundred metres. Van Baarle was able to grab second place with Madouas dashing ahead of Pogačar for third. Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) was the first chaser home at two seconds back.

It was a small group at the front of the race with 15km to go on the Oude Kwaremont - Van der Poel, Van Baarle, Madouas, Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). It was here Pogačar attacked, yet again, and  the power only matched by Van der Poel. The two jetted away and it looked as if the duo would battle to the line, but Pogačar played cat and mouse and a 30-second gap on chasers fizzled out, as well as the Slovenian's final push to the podium.

The crowds were back at the race after a two-year absence, lining the 272km course as the official race start in Antwerp’s Grote Markt took place on a sunny but cold day.  A group of nine escapees built a maximum advantage of more than four minutes:  Stan Dewulf (AG2R-Citroën), Sebastien Grignard (Lotto Soudal), Lindsay De Vylder (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Mathijs Paasschens (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauces-WB), Manuele Boaro (Astana Qazaqstan), Luca Mozzato (B&B Hotels-KTM), Tom Bohli (Cofidis) and Max Kanter (Movistar).

Over the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont – the first of the day’s 18 hellingen – with 140km remaining and the advantage of the breakaway began to disappear, and counter-attacks began to shatter the peloton. The complexion of the entire race changed on the first climb of the Oude Kwaremont, as Pogačar surged violently from the peloton and over two kilometres closed the gap to the chasers and passed the early breakaway riders.

Then on the 22 per cent slopes of the Koppenberg, he attacked again, flying away with only Van der Poel and Madouas joining the move, and then later with Wright and Van Baarle for the final push.

10 conclusions from the 2022 tour of flanders, cancellara's classics column: van der poel schools pogacar with badass move.

  • Van der Poel: Winning is not as easy as everybody thinks

Van der Poel: It was a bit of a shock to see Tour of Flanders final play out like that

Tadej pogacar: i was frustrated with myself but i love the tour of flanders, regrets for kung at tour of flanders but madouas makes cobbled breakthrough, fred wright: tour of flanders was the hardest race i’ve ever done, van baarle: i kept my line in the sprint against pogacar, uae team emirates visit jury after pogacar’s tour of flanders sprint remonstrations, chain drop no excuse as asgreen ‘slaughtered’ by pogacar at tour of flanders, cancellara's classics column: wout is out, tour of flanders is wide open, tour of flanders men: 5 contenders, 5 outsiders, wild west: tour of flanders takes on a new guise in wout van aert's absence, the major contenders missing the tour of flanders 2022, tour of flanders history.

Call it the Tour of Flanders, the Ronde van Vlaanderen or 'De Ronde' for short, Tour des Flandres, Giro delle Fiandre, or Flandern Rundfahrt, the Vlaanderens Mooiste is the pinnacle of one-day racing in Belgium. The race had its first edition in 1913, the brainchild of Sportwereld's Léon van den Haute to reinvigorate cycling in Belgium and provide the Flemish people with an event entirely within their region.

The Tour of Flanders was interrupted by World War I but when it returned, its popularity exploded with the distance and terrible roads combining to create a punishing and triumphant challenge.

In the 1970s the finish was moved to Meerbeke and the finale incorporated the Muur van Geraardsbergen, or Kapelmuur after the small chapel at its summit, and later added the ultra-steep, cobbled Koppenberg as a key feature on the parcours.

The formula was changed in 2012 to create a more spectator-friendly circuit around a finish in Oudenaarde that puts the crux moments on the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg cobbled climbs.

In 2020, the race was postponed to October because of the COVID-19 pandemic and shortened to 243km. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) triumphed after beating his eternal rival Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to the line.

The race returned to April in 2021 and was 254.3km in length with Danish champion Kasper Asgreen out-sprinting van der Poel in a thrilling final to win the 2021 Tour of Flanders .

10 TIPS TO WATCH THE RONDE

  • CUT THE RONDE OFF AT THE CHASE   If you want to cheer on your favourite cyclists in various locations, then hop on your bike. The website www.derondeinoudenaarde.be lists several suggested routes for people who like to see the pack race by in a blur in various locations. Depending on your condition you can easily see them live up to seven times! So keep checking this page when the route of the Ronde is published.
  • HAVE SOMEONE DRIVE YOU  The Tour of Flanders attracts 750,000 people every year. Have someone drive you if you prefer a stress-free experience. Every year the Ronde organisers have a number of shuttle services that bring fans to and from the route. The Province of East Flanders offers this free service! If you want to make sure that you do not run into traffic queues anywhere then take the train. The station of Oudenaarde is easy to reach and from there you can take a direct train to Ghent.
  • HANG AROUND IN THE MARKET SQUARE  Did you know you can see the race live four times and still be in the centre of the action? If you walk up and down between the market square of Oudenaarde and the arrival area you will see the race pass by and be able to witness two finishes (men and women). And what's more, you can enjoy some entertainment thanks to the many street artists and cycling collectives. Hungry or thirsty? Enjoy a drink or a snack on one of the many terraces or pubs around the market square. You can also buy a cap of your favourite cycling hero in the merchandising and entertainment area. If you're up for even more entertainment then pop into the public tent near the finish line.
  • VISIT A "PUBLIC" VILLAGE  Do you want to get a taste of the unique race atmosphere along the route of the race but are you not necessarily interested in pitching your own tent? Then check out the public areas on Koppenberg, Paterberg, Kruisberg and Oude Kwaremont. The fields on either side of the hill are reserved for the public during Flanders' Most Beautiful Race. Besides sanitary facilities there are also various stands here where you can have something to eat or drink. And after the race this is definitely the place to be if you want to experience the frenetic and joyous atmosphere!
  • FIND A HIDDEN GEM   If you like straying off the beaten track then we have some hidden gems to recommend. In the centre of the picturesque village of Mater you will run in to the cobblestones of Kerkgate. Find a seat on one of the terraces along this section and watch your heroes come charging by. Haaghoek and Mariaborrestraat are also good places to enjoy a stunning view of the pack as it advances. Supporters of Tom Boonen will tell you however that there is only one place to go, namely Taaienberg. Here Tornado Tom always tests his legs (and those of his competitors) in the gutter. Steenbeekdries is another lesser-known hill that is nearby and also worth the effort.
  • VISIT A REAL FLEMISH CYCLING PUB  In the Flemish Ardennes bike races are a part of life. And what better place to go and discuss the upcoming race or chat about the most recent Tour of Flanders and other spring races than in one of the local pubs? So, why not visit one of the many pubs, in the hills of the landscape of Flanders' most beautiful race in the run-up to or after the Tour weekend. No idea where to go? Order the free "Plan Bier" map to explore 72 of the best pubs in the Flemish Ardennes.
  • GET SOME HELP FROM ABOVE   If you really want to go all out to make sure your favourite cyclist becomes the champion and takes home the trophy, then visit the Tour of Flanders chapel! Say a prayer to Saint Daniel, the patron saint of all cyclists, or light a candle near the stylised cyclist fresco. The names of past Tour of Flanders winners have been carved into the floor. In short, a really unique experience.
  • BRUSH UP ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE   While you may think you know everything there is to know about the Ronde, you may still be surprised. Pop into the Tour of Flanders Experience Centre in Oudenaarde. This is the place to go to learn more about Flanders' favourite cycling race. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the olden days, watch videos, follow Peter Van Petegem up Oude Kwaremont, experience what it feels like to drive on cobblestones on a specially designed bike, test your knowledge of the Ronde in a quiz and finally, get up on the podium yourself, flanked by your cycling heroes!
  • POSITION YOURSELF STRATEGICALLY NEAR THE TOUR OF FLANDERS MONUMENT  Just like there are any number of cycling races in Flanders, there are countless cycling monuments in the Flemish Ardennes. If you want to see the Tour of Flanders race pass by in a special location, then why not pick one of the many Ronde monuments along the course? There is a special monument, dedicated to the memory of Karel Van Wijnendaele, the Ronde 's spiritual father, in the village of Kwaremont. Other monuments can be found in Brakel (the roundabout of the N48 and the N8), at the top of Paddestraat and next to the church in Meerbeke (Ninove). And don't forget about the cycling poem by Willy Verhegghe on the Wall of Geraardsbergen.
  • BECOME A VIP  Do you want to experience the hectic atmosphere of the Tour of Flanders first-hand from start to finish? The race organiser Flanders Classics has several special packages which offer a different experience of the race. You can choose from one of several VIP packages to turn this major sporting event into an unforgettable experience. Further information at: www.rondevanvlaanderen.be .

2023 Tour of Flanders: Preview, schedule, how to watch both men's and women's classic races live

Mathieu van der Poel is favourite to defend his title at the iconic one-day men's classic race on the Belgian cobbles, while Annemiek van Vleuten chases a third women's crown in her final season.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) on Stage 17 of 2022 Tour de France

The second road cycling one-day classic monument of the 2023 season is here.

On Sunday (2 April), the  Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen; Tour des Flandres) will celebrate its 107th men's and 20th women's editions as the first of two back-to-back cobbled monuments (Paris–Roubaix follows next week).

Men have raced 'De Ronde' annually uninterrupted since 1919. This year, for the first time since 2016, the race begins in Bruges/Brugge – the first year of an agreement that will see Bruges/Brugge and Antwerp alternate start-line duties. The race will end in Oudenaarde, as it has done every year since 2012, after 273.4km (169.9mi).

The women, meanwhile, face a 156.6km (97.3mi) course set around Oudenaarde but also encompassing swathes of the men's route.

Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands and Belgium's own  Lotte Kopecky are the respective defending champions. Van der Poel is looking for his third title in four races, having also triumphed in 2020.

GB's super cyclist Tom Pidcock lauded as potential world’s best but in which discipline will he shine brightest?

2023 tour of flanders course routes.

Welcome back to Bruges/Brugge. That's the main headline from this year's men's Ronde van Vlaanderen course , as the race returns to the same UNESCO World Heritage Site start town it had from 1998 through 2016.

The Grote Markt in Bruges/Brugge is where the peloton will start from; the change in start city from Antwerp means the route south to Oudenaard is also changing.

While the daunting Oude Kwaremont – Paterberg finale will still take pride of place, the course for the first 136km (84.5 miles) to the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont looks a little less heavy on the legs compared to last year, with only a single cobbled sector (down from two) at Huisepontweg and a generally flatter parcours, albeit with an additional côte.

However, the traditional loop around Oudenaard will again test the riders, with 18 climbs from the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont to the finish. Once more, the Paterberg is the last climb of the day with 13 km to go before a fast, flat finish. Across the day's 19 classified hills, the riders will climb 3,227m (10,587ft).

The women will ride a course very similar to the ones they are used to – a loop around Oudenaard, beginning at the Markt and ending on Minderbroedersstraat as the men do.

As with the men's race, Huisepontweg at 49.6km is the first cobbled sector; unlike the men, the women's peloton will already have had to climb their first test – the Tiegemberg.

Twelve further climbs await the women, who will face the same final 45km as the men, starting with the notoriously difficult cobbled climb up the Kopperberg (113.4km) and concluding with the Oude Kwaremont – Paterberg one-two to finish. A total elevation gain of 2,682m (8,799ft) awaits the peloton.

2023 Tour of Flanders riders to watch

Men's race - 2023 riders to watch.

  • Mathieu van der Poel – the defending champion from the Netherlands. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider also triumphed in 2020 and was beaten into second place in 2021. He will aim for a fourth straight podium finish on the back of winning Milano-Sanremo two weeks ago.
  • Tadej Pogacar – the all-round phenomenon from Slovenia is looking for his fourth career monument win (2 at Il Lombardia, 1 at Liège-Bastogne-Liège). This is just his second appearance in De Ronde, having finished agonisingly off the podium in fourth last year.
  • Kasper Asgreen – the Dane was the surprise winner in 2021, knocking van der Poel into second place. His Soudal–Quick Step team can also count on…
  • Julian Alaphilippe – the two-time road race world champion, who looked set to challenge for the 2020 race before crashing into a motorcycle while in the winning breakaway.
  • Wout van Aert – Jumbo-Visma's leader in Flanders, who was forced to miss last year's race after catching Covid. Widely considered the biggest rival to Van der Poel, Van Aert will be hoping to upgrade his 2020 second place to the top step of the podium. Enters off the back of a second place at Gent-Wevelgem.
  • Greg van Avermaet – even aged 37, don't rule out the Belgian on his home roads. The 2016 Olympic road race champion is a specialist in the one-day classics, and has finished on the podium in Oudenaarde four times without ever winning the race.
  • Tom Pidcock – the Briton is, like Van der Poel and Van Aert, used to riding on different terrain as a cyclo-cross, mountain bike, and road rider. Pidcock claimed his first major one-day win earlier this year at Strade Bianche and has experience of winning on cobbles, triumphing in the 2021 Brabantse Pijl and 2019 Paris–Roubaix Espoirs junior race.

Women's race - 2023 riders to watch

  • Annemiek van Vleuten – the Dutch women's cycling legend has announced that 2023 will be her final season. A two-time winner of the women's Tour of Flanders (2011, 2021), Van Vleuten is no stranger to success in all forms of road cycling, from long stage races to one-day classics, and will hope to sign off from Oudenaarde with a third victory.
  • Lotte Kopecky – defending champion from 2022, Kopecky will have the home support behind her. A two-time national road race champion, she already has a pair of one-day classic race wins under her belt this season and will be one of the favourites for a third.
  • Marianne Vos – the London 2012 Olympic road race champion hasn't won in a one-day race since Gent-Wevelgem in 2021, but count Vos out at your peril. The vastly experienced Dutchwoman is still a force to be reckoned with on her day.
  • Elisa Longo Borghini – the Trek-Segafredo team leader, who won bronze in the last two Olympic road races, is a previous winner of the event (2015) and will be supported by fellow Italian and 2021 world champion Elisa Balsamo.

Fans of the Tour of Flanders will be denied another showdown between Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease A Bike) this year, after the Belgian sustained multiple fractures in a heavy crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen.

It leaves Van der Poel as the clear favourite, with on-song Dane Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) stepping into the breach as the rider most likely to challenge the imperious Dutchman.

With reigning champion Tadej Pogačar from this year's startlist, the two men will feel more confident. But a Classics win is always reliant on a certain amount of luck, and Van der Poel and Pedersen certainly won't have it all their own way.

Meanwhile the women's race is also something of a clash of the titans, with two-time winner and defending champion Lotte Kopecky and her SD Worx-Protime team-mate forming a potent pairing who will nevertheless have to contend with the likes of Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease A Bike) and British hopeful Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) among others.

This year sees Antwerp take over from Bruges as the alternating host city of the race. The route remains broadly similar to previous years, with greater use of wider roads early on to help prevent crashes being the only change.

For the men, the first berg of 17 will be the Oude Kwaremont, tackled after 137km of racing, while the Wolvenberg at the 72km point is the first of 12 such tests in the women’s race. The Wolvenberg is where both men's and women's races converge, after which the climbs come thick and fast.

It's the final one-two punch of Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg that often proves the most decisive. Controversial when first devised in 2012, particularly as it meant the omission of the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen, this finale has since won fans over with its own unique character, which is also influenced by the double punch of the long, gradual Kwaremont and the short yet ultra-steep Paterberg.

Tour of Flanders 2024 route

This year's men's race continues the annual trading game between Bruges and Antwerp, with the latter hosting the start on Sunday. Riders will find bigger roads than before waiting for them as they begin the long haul south-west towards berg country.

The fun begins with the first of three passes of the Oude Kwaremont, and the climbs come thick and fast after that as the race follows a spaghetti-like parcours around the hills of Flanders just south-east of the finish town of Oudenaarde. On the way they take in famous climbs including the Wolvenberg, Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg on the way to a total 17 climbs, finishing with the one-two of the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg with 13 flat kilometres to the line.

The women begin in Oudenaarde, where both races finish. They first head north-east away from the city to complete a circuit of the flatter terrain around Zottegem, looping back towards Oudenaarde to begin the day's climbing at 72km with the Wolvenberg. A similarly serpentine route to that of the men sees them tackle a total 12 classified climbs, including the Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg, along with that final Kwaremont/Paterberg one-two at the end.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Riders to watch

Mathieu van der Poel Alpecin-Deceuninck ***** The Dutch rider looks imperious this season – always at or near the head of affairs in every race he has ridden and with a win at the E3 Saxo Classic and second at Gent-Wevelgem under his belt already. He's had a mercurial last couple of seasons, but covered himself in glory in the Classics last year and seems to be set to repeat the feat this time around. The fact that Wout van Aert has now been ruled out – albeit in very unfortunate circumstances that VDP would not have wished for – won't exactly hurt his chances either.

Tiesj Benoot Visma-Lease A Bike *** With Benoot's team-mate and compatriot Wout van Aert recovering from a nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen and other team-mates like Dylan Van Baarle having been ill, this could be Benoot's opportunity to step up from nearly man to winner at Flanders. He has been fifth here before – back in 2015 – and won Strade Bianche in 2018 . With a following wind and a bit of luck a podium, or even a win, here is not beyond him.

Mads Pedersen Lidl-Trek **** The Dane was third here last year and eighth the year before that. Considering that he seems to be in the form of his life – and the absence of one of his main Classics rivals, Wout van Aert – what's to say that Pedersen cannot finally achieve victory in what is one of the most revered one-day races of the season. Pedersen proves himself to be ever-more versatile, with overall wins in the Etoile de Bessèges and Tour de la Provence stage races, plus the more recent Gent-Wevelgem already this season.

Lotte Kopecky SD Worx-Protime ***** Of all the cards the Belgian team could play, right now Kopecky looks like the most likely to bring them success. She has been a playmaker in pretty much every race she has entered this season and already has four wins under her belt, including Strade Bianche . Riding alongside her, and even for her, will be at least four other potential victors – Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser and Lorena Wiebes – ready to take over if Kopecky falters.

Elisa Longo Borghini Lidl-Trek **** The Italian has amassed a huge palmarès across Classics and stage races alike, despite spending most of her career riding in the company (under the shadow?) of greats like Annemiek van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen. She has Lotte Kopecky to deal with these days, but that hasn't stopped the 32-year-old from putting in a solid shift so far this season already, with podiums at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Strade Bianche, and a win at Trofeo Oro in Euro.

Kasia Niewiadoma Canyon-SRAM **** The reigning gravel world champion was left heartbroken after missing out on a podium spot at Strade Bianche earlier this month. That was her most recent result, and one she may be eager to atone for at the Tour of Flanders this weekend. She was fifth here last year – the latest in a litany of top-10s stretching back 10 years. The Polish rider looks to be on form, with five top-seven finishes out of six race days this season, though there is of course the small matter of the SD Worx team standing between her and a win at Flanders.

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

Which Tour of Flanders climb is the hardest? We asked the riders.

They might look superhuman on the cobbled climbs, but pro riders admit that the flanders hills are brutal and have insight on which ones make or break the race..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

The Tour of Flanders sends the world’s best classics riders on a 266-kilometer trek from Antwerp to Oudenaarde. Along the journey, the peloton will tackle Flanders’ 17 helligen , including the infamous cobblestone climbs Koppenberg, Oude Kwaremont, and Paterberg.

All of these bergs dish up leg-cracking pain. And before the riders even reach these climbs, a chaotic battle always ensues within the crowded peloton as the riders jostle for the best position.

Which berg hurts the worst? Which features the most aggressive fight for position? Which one most regularly decides the race?

Again, journalists like me can be armchair quarterbacks when debating the merits of the Tour of Flanders’s 17 climbs. But the riders know best.

So, I conducted another highly unscientific poll to understand what the pro peloton thinks of these painful bergs. With previous polls, these questions delivered decisive answers. However, the peloton returned split opinions to my questions around these bergs. Here’s what I found out:

tour of flanders hills

Which hill is hardest?

Verdict: Koppenberg or Oude Kwaremont

One climb is the steepest and the other is the longest. Both the Koppenberg (22% maximum, 600 meters) and the Oude Kwaremont (11.6% maximum, 2,200 meters) received a plethora of nods when I asked riders which climb is the hardest. A distant third place was the Taaienberg (15.8% maximum, 530 meters).

It’s understandable why riders would choose the Koppenberg, which is so steep that riders must push maximum watts just to make it to the summit. And the road is unquestionably narrow, which causes frequent bottlenecks. Every year, TV cameras catch dramatic images of those unlucky riders who are stopped behind a traffic jam, unclip, and walk to the top.

“It’s really steep, and if it’s a little bit wet it is the hardest to make it to the top,” said Dylan van Baarle (Sky).

“It has probably the worst stones and steepest gradient,” said Silvan Dillier (Ag2r La Mondiale). “You cannot stop pedaling or you have to unclip.”

The challenge of the Kwaremont comes with the pacing. At 2,200 meters it is the longest, and the climb is split into two halves, with a long false flat section of cobblestones coming at the top. That long and painful flat section is where three-time winner Fabian Cancellara often accelerated away from his foes, who had tired themselves out by pushing too hard on the climb’s steep midpoint.

Plus, the riders tackle the Oude Kwaremont three times.

“You have the climb, you come into town, and then you have the big flat sections of cobbles to deal with as you try to get up to speed,” said Jack Bauer (Mitchelton-Scott). “It just hurts every time, and we do it three times.”

“It is not finished at the top and you have to keep riding on the cobbles,” said 2015 Flanders winner Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates). “If there is just a few percent difference between riders, on the [Kwaremont] is where that one or two percent has a lot to say.”

tour of flanders hills

Most aggressive fight at the bottom

Verdict: Oude Kwaremont (second ascent)

You can’t win Flanders at the foot of a berg, but you can definitely lose it. That’s why a brutal and chaotic fight ensues in the kilometers before each climb, as riders jostle for a front position. Riders said that one moment specifically creates the most aggressive and chaotic battle for position: the kilometers before the second ascent of the Oude Kwaremont. The fight comes 214 kilometers into the race.

“That’s the moment that makes the difference, so everyone wants to be there,” said Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal). “It’s a really wide downhill into a small road before the climb section.”

Indeed, the riders come off of the Kanarieberg and embark on a frantic downhill fight before taking a sharp right-hand turn onto a road that is barely wider than a typical American bike path. The peloton then makes another right-hander onto the Oude Kwaremont, which has historically been a launchpad for the first of the race’s final decisive moves.

Good positioning at the base of the Kwaremont can advance a rider to the next section of the race. Bad positioning, by contrast, can doom a rider’s overall chances.

“The second time up Kwaremont, that’s where the race ends for three-quarters of the peloton, and for one-quarter of the peloton, that’s where it starts,” said Bernard Eisel (Dimension Data). “Even if you’re still in the race, you’re just a victim if you’re in the back of the bunch at that point.”

Paterberg

Which hill decides the race?

Verdict:  Oude Kwaremont or Paterberg

Cancellara went on the Kwaremont. Sagan went on the Paterberg. Philippe Gilbert went on the Muur van Geraarsbergen, but his long-range attack is an outlier from the Flanders norm. Most riders told us that the most decisive climb of the Tour of Flanders is either the Oude Kwaremont or the Paterberg, due to each climb’s position near the end of the race.

“The really big guns always come out on the Kwaremont, and if they are on a really good day, they can drop everyone there,” said Jens Debusschere (Jumbo-Visma). “It’s late in the final of the race. The magic happens there.”

The final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont comes with 19 kilometers remaining in the race, and the Paterberg follows shortly thereafter with 13.5 kilometers. Riders are fatigued, both physically and mentally. These two climbs are often when tactics and strategy give way to guts, riders said.

“It’s the Paterberg,” said Stijn Vandenbergh. “And I always suffer there because of my weight.”

Most dreaded

tour of flanders hills

Verdict:  All

The climbs of Flanders present a serious challenge to all riders, even seasoned pros. And since they are of varying lengths and steepnesses, these climbs present a different challenge for all of the riders in the bunch. When asked which climb the riders dread the most, they gave me a variety of answers.

“It’s the Koppenberg because you start at zero miles per hour into it,” said Mitch Docker (EF Education First). “You can see the whole thing from bottom to top. It’s just not fun.”

“The Kwaremont is the place where it really hurts,” said Michael Schar (CCC Team). “It’s so long and it stays flat at the top.”

“It’s the Taaienberg. I don’t know why I always suffer there,” Debusschere said. “I was never in a good spot for it, and someone always goes full gas and when we go over the top, the group splits.”

Some riders simply shook their heads at this question and proceeded to name multiple climbs. Often, they said, it’s the scenario on the road that dictates whether a rider anticipates, or dreads, a coming climb.

Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) put it succinctly.

“All of them, they’re all so hard,” Pedersen said. “The Kwaremont is a s—t hard climb. The Koppenberg is a s—t hard climb. All of them are horrible.”

Tour of Flanders 2023 - women: The Route

The first ‘helling’, Tiegemberg, appears after 10 kilometres. It’s as if it’s misplaced by the organisation, since the first hour of racing is easygoing for the rest. The next hurdle is the pavé of the de Huisepontweg, which is after 50 kilometres, where the action more or less begins.

Climbs up the Korte Aast and Wolvenberg precede de ‘kinderkopjes’ of the Kerkgate and Jagerij. By now, the race is halfway and the easygoing opener is definitely done and dusted. The combination of Molenberg, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries and Valkenberg within 14 kilometres is a solid way to get things going. Let’s call it the pre-finale to seperate the women from the girls. It precedes the last calm phase of almost 20 kilometres. From then on, it’s all systems go.

The Koppenberg is crested with 44.6 kilometres left to race. Every 5 kilometres or so a new hill appears with a stretch of pavé just before it, like some sort of welcome mat. In order of appearance the riders hit the Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeendries, Stationsberg and Taaienberg.

And on we go, into the finale. The riders tackle the Kruisberg/Hotond with 26 kilometres remaining to continue towards the awe-inspiring combo Oude Kwaremont/Paterberg. Both paved with cobbles, the Oude Kwaremont is a 2.2 kilometres climb at 4% and the Paterberg is 360 metres long and excessively steep. The average gradient sits at 12.9% and the toughest ramps go up at an unforgiving 20%.

After the Paterberg there are 13.3 kilometres remaining. On the flat.

SD Worx dominated last year’s finale. Marlen Reusser was on the attack with Brodie Chapman on Oude Kwaremont before Annemiek van Vleuten bridges\d across on Paterberg with a number of riders holding on for dear life in her slipstream. When she reached the summit only Lotte Kopecky and Marlen Reusser survived the carnage. Momenets later Chantal van den Broek-Blaak, Brodie Chapman and Kasia Niewiadoma came clawing back.

Van den Broek-Blaak was still fresh enough to accelerate on the flat and Van Vleuten closed down the gap with Kopecky in her wheel. A perfect situation for SD Worx and the team played it perfectly. Kopecky outsprinted Van Vleuten and 2 seconds later Van den Broek-Blaak crossed the line celebrating.

tour of flanders hills

We’ve missed out on the Tour of Flanders this year (other than on Bkool) but the climbs are still there. The race has legendary status amongst the locals as it features in their national identity. Ronde van Vlaanderen race day is almost like a national holiday in that part of the world.

Table of Contents

The race itself has had a few changes in the last decade, moving the start and finish lines a few times. The old finale of Kapelmuur followed by the Bosberg disappeared for a new run-in to Oudenaarde. The move saw the previously important Kapelmuur taken out the race for a few years. The Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg took on the responsibility for deciding race winners instead.

Below is a full list of each of the climbs used in the Tour of Flanders since 2010. Each climb has a count of how often it’s featured in the race, a link to the Strava segment so you can see where it is and a profile to see the toughness. Not every climb is cobbled but many are, they’re tough, as I found out when I did the Tour of Flanders sportive in 2018.

For a good read-up of the history of the race, check out Peter Cossins – The Monuments .

How to Watch the Tour of Flanders

The fields for Sunday are absolutely stacked for one of the most exciting races on the spring calendar.

106th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2022 men's elite

This season’s second Monument just might be the best.

The warm-up races with names we can barely pronounce wrapped-up with Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen, which means it’s time for the biggest race in Belgium and one of the hardest races on the men’s and women’s calendars: the Tour of Flanders (known locally as the Ronde van Vlaanderen , or more simply as the Ronde ). Here’s everything you need to know about the season’s second Monument.

For the first time since 2016, the 273K men’s race begins in Bruges. The course then zig-zags its way southeast toward the hills of the Flemish Ardennes, a region packed with short, steep (often cobbled) climbs which the locals call bergs . Once the race passes through Oudenaarde (home to the Tour of Flanders Museum), the action centers around two big loops, each featuring two climbs—the Oude Kwaremont (long, steady, and cobbled) and the Paterberg (short, steep, and cobbled)—that often determine the outcome of the race.

19th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2022 women's elite

Filled with narrow farm roads (more like bike paths) that seem to wind endlessly around the Flemish countryside, it often takes years for riders to master the nuances of the course. And it’s early April, which means weather can be a factor as well (there’s nothing more slippery than cobblestones covered in wet manure). No wonder Belgians have won the race 69 times.

Of the 19 climbs in this year’s men’s race, the Koppenberg (44K from the finish line) is probably the most famous. Super-steep, cobbled, and narrow, this is where the race’s final phase begins. Riders who don’t hit the climb at the front of the peloton are often forced to get off their bikes and walk as the sudden deceleration caused by the abrupt change in terrain ripples backwards through the pack. The race is essentially over for anyone who doesn’t make it over the top in the top-25.

After the Koppenberg, five climbs remain, and recent editions of the Ronde have seen race-winning attacks launched on just about all of them. Lately it’s all come down to the final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont-Paterberg combo, with special attention often given to the rolling road in between as riders try and surprise their rivals while they recover from the Kwaremont and prepare for the Paterberg.

Leaving out the portion from Bruges, the 156K women’s race begins and ends in Oudenaarde, with 13 of the bergs featured in the men’s event including–for the first time last year–the Koppenberg. In fact, the women’s and men’s finales are identical, with the Kruisberg, the Oude Kwaremont, and the Paterberg coming in quick succession providing the final launchpad for riders hoping to escape.

From the top of the final ascent of the Paterberg it’s only 13K to the finish line in Oudenaarde, a distance that several riders have covered alone in recent years. Sprints are rare in the Ronde–the race is too hard to see large groups make it to the finish line still in contention for the win–so if they happen they only happen in groups of 3 or 4.

How to Watch

We’ll be up early on Sunday, April 2 to watch the men as they hit the Oude Kwaremont for the first time (about 7:30 a.m. EDT). If that’s too early for you, set an alarm for about 9:30 a.m. EDT, the second passage over the cobbled ascent on the first of the Ronde’s two final circuits.

The men’s race should finish around 10:45 a.m. EDT, at which point the women (depending on their average speed) should be nearing or just over the Koppenberg. Their race should finish around 11:45 a.m. EDT, which means you’re in for at least 2+ hours of fantastic racing.

What Happened Last Year

106th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2022 men's elite

With Belgium’s Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) out after testing positive for COVID-19, the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) entered the day as the top favorite. But van der Poel had a new foe: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who was making his Flanders debut 1) to get a taste of the cobblestones in preparation for July’s Tour de France, and 2) because he’s Tadej Pogačar and he can pretty much be a contender in any race he enters.

And that proved to be the case as the two-time Tour de France champion attacked on the second ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, then again on the Koppenberg, and finally on the last ascent of the Oude Kwaremont–with van der Poel the only rider able to follow him. The duo worked well together until the final kilometer, when van der Poel slowed, almost daring Pogačar to start the sprint. His deceleration allowed a small group of chasers to rejoin the duo, at which point the Dutchman accelerated, winning the race for the second time in three years. His compatriot Dylan van Baarle (INEOS Grenadiers) finished second, and France’s Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) took third. After botching the sprint, Pogačar was forced to settle for a disappointing fourth-place finish.

About an hour later, Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx) saved the day for the home fans, winning the women’s Tour of Flanders in the black-yellow-red jersey of the Belgian national champion.

19th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2022 women's elite

An elite group of six came together after the final ascent of the Paterberg, including Kopecky, her teammates Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (who won the Ronde in 2021) and Marlen Reusser, and Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten (the defending champion).

With strength in numbers, SD Worx played its cards well. Reusser was the first to attack, a move quickly countered by van Vleuten. Then van den Broek-Blaak went, initially catching van Vleuten off-guard. The two-time Ronde winner recovered though, chasing down van den Broek-Blaak–but bringing Kopecky along for the ride. Once caught, van den Broek-Blaak rode for her teammate, leading out the sprint for the Belgian champion. She’s only the second Belgian to win the women’s Ronde.

Riders to Watch

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

Winner of two of the last three editions–and Milan-Sanremo two weeks ago–van der Poel is the top favorite heading into Sunday’s men’s event. Yes, he lost last Friday’s E3 Saxo Bank Classic (a mini-Tour of Flanders) to van Aert, but he was clearly the strongest rider in the race and would have won had van Aert not (wisely) opted for a long-distance sprint (the Dutchman prefers shorter, more sudden accelerations). A win Sunday would put van der Poel alongside some of the sport’s greatest Classics riders atop the Ronde’s record books with an incredible three wins in five starts.

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma)

66th e3 saxo bank classic harelbeke 2023

Van Aert missed last year’s race after testing positive for COVID-19 a few days before the event, a big shame since the Belgian was in the form of his life and looked ready to avenge his narrow loss to van der Poel in 2020. Belgian seems to have timed his form just right again: he won Friday’s E3 Saxo Bank Classic and finished second after giving the win to his teammate, France’s Christophe Laporte , in Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem.

Van Aert seems to have finally learned to play a bit more poker, saving his energy for well-timed attacks and forcing other riders to share the responsibility of chasing other moves and driving key breakaways. If all goes as planned, on Sunday he’ll win his first cobbled Monument, becoming the first Belgian to win the Ronde since 2017.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

Pogačar raced in two of last year’s cobbled Classics–Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders–seemingly just as preparation for the cobbled stage of July’s Tour de France. But Pog doesn’t start races for training: he finished 10th in Dwars door Vlaanderen and 4th in Flanders. Well, after messing up last year, he’s back and committed to winning it. Forming the third piece of a star-studded breakaway in Friday’s E3 Saxo Bank Classic, the Slovenian joined van der Poel and van Aert in the winning move. But winning Flanders is a tall order for the Slovenian: the climbs in Flanders aren’t long enough for him to drop the other two–and he can’t outsprint them. Watching Pogačar try and figure out a way to win could be this year’s most exciting storyline.

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ)

We won’t be surprised if this plays out in a way similar to the E3 Saxo Bank Classic, with van der Poel, van Aert, and Pogačar breaking away to hog all the glory for themselves. But if there is an “upset,” we won’t be shocked if Mohorič or Küng is the rider to pull it off. Over the past two seasons they’ve put themselves firmly on a tier right below the “Big Three” in the cobbled Classics. Their teams are deep and experienced, and they both could profit should there be a stalemate among the top three contenders. Mohorič is an opportunist and will likely try and escape earlier than the others might expect; Küng is a time trialist and could prove hard to catch if he gets a gap late in the race.

Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx)

18th omloop het nieuwsblad elite 2023 women's elite

Team SD Worx is far and away the strongest in the race, and as they showed last year, they have several cards to play. Their captain will likely be Kopecky , the defending champion. Able to win alone or in a small group sprint, she should be the focal point of the team’s plans.

Marlen Reusser (Team SD Worx)

Kopecky’s toughest competition might come from within her own team, most likely in the form of a rider who played a big role in helping her win last year: Reusser. The Swiss time trialist scored an amazing solo victory in Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem . A strong time trialist, if she gets away late in the race and other teams refuse to chase her (for fear of giving Kopecky a free ride to the finish line) they may never see her again.

Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx)

A stark contrast to Laporte and van Aert’s 1-2 finish in Ghent-Wevelgem (in which van Aert openly gifted the win to his teammate), Vollering outsprinted Kopecky to win Strade Bianche in March, a result that certainly made for some awkward post-race comments. Well, we could be in for a repeat: Vollering won Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen , and we’re wondering how she and Kopecky will coexist on Sunday. Will Vollering ride for her Belgian teammate? Will Kopecky chase her if she doesn’t? The race within this team will go a long way toward determining the Ronde’s final outcome.

Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar)

7th setmana ciclista volta comunitat valenciana femines 2023 stage 4

Racing her final season as a professional, van Vleuten has had a relatively quiet spring thus far: she hasn’t competed since Strade Bianche (in early March) and shockingly hasn’t won a race yet this year. That said, we’ve learned to never discount the current world champion, who had a quiet spring in 2021 but then won both Dwars door Vlaanderen and Flanders in the same week. Overlooking her could prove fatal for the opposition.

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma)

Vos has only raced twice so far this season, but the Dutch rider finished third in Dwars door Vlaanderen, a result that shows she’s right where she needs to be to add another Tour of Flanders to her resume (she won the race way back in 2013). She could be using Flanders to put the finishing touches on her form for next weekend’s Paris-Roubaix (one of the only major races missing from her palmares), but if a large group hits the finish line in Oudenaarde, she’s a good bet to win the field sprint.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
