I’m the CTO of Canada’s biggest airport. AI isn’t destroying jobs in aviation—it’s giving us superpowers to improve air travel

There are those who believe artificial intelligence is here to automate the economy, displace jobs, and wreak social havoc. I understand those fears, but in the aviation industry, AI is having the exact opposite effect. Hear me out. 

Air travel volume is bouncing back and surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Global air passenger traffic is expected to double between 2019 and 2040, according to the International Air Transport Association. My airport, Toronto Pearson , is forecasting a jump from 45 million passengers last year to 65 million by the mid-2030s . We’re seeing fewer short-haul business flights than before, but more passengers heading off to conferences, leisure, and sun destinations. 

Increasing demand means new and more frequent peaks for airport workforces. Staffing levels are returning to—and in some cases surpassing—pre-pandemic levels. But physical expansions and enhancements have long lead times: Infrastructure often takes years to plan, build, and operationalize. Toronto Pearson just announced a plan to invest billions of dollars into new terminal infrastructure—both physical and digital—over the next 10 years, joining big North American hubs such as JFK, LaGuardia, and Chicago O’Hare in renovating for the future. 

For these airports and others who are gearing up to meet new demand, AI will enable workers to operate more efficiently with less burnout. More efficient movement of aircraft, people, and baggage will help everyone operate more resiliently and sustainably. 

Ground operations often start not just with airports and passengers, but with the evolving needs of airlines, which are always trying to drive down costs and optimize their passenger mix. The trend toward larger aircraft, a strategy known as “ upgauging ,” has advantages for airlines, but from an airport perspective, it can add to the pressure on operational staff to manage higher volumes during peak times. 

AI-enhanced airport

So, how is AI helping?  

Let’s first consider baggage handling, where AI-driven scheduling software is revolutionizing staff allocation. Airline baggage handlers are typically dispatched to flights as they arrive. But plane arrivals are always shifting due to hundreds of variables; it’s challenging to schedule and prioritize the handlers across dozens of aircraft movements per hour. AI models can be trained on operational data, identify pragmatic patterns, and optimize the work in a way humans cannot, getting teams and bags where they need to be, safely, with minimal passenger wait times and efficiency.  

AI also helps the airport’s baggage-handling system perform at its best to avoid delays and congestion. Toronto Pearson uses it for predictive maintenance, which helps us anticipate breakdowns before they happen and schedule work during off hours to minimize disruption. Last year, our AI-enhanced system routinely provided better than 99.5% uptime availability. 

How about on-time performance for flights? We are one of a growing number of airports using AI-driven software to optimize gate turnaround time. Cameras and various sensors watch aircraft turn around at each gate, flagging delays, updating departure times, and cutting the amount of idle time and emissions the next plane might waste sitting at an apron or taxiway. 

Of course, AI, with its real-time data and predictive analytics, does not automate work that ground staff need to do—it just makes them better at it. And because airport operations are so tightly interconnected, one significant improvement in one part of the system causes a positive ripple effect, creating many downstream micro-improvements throughout.  

Real-time digital twin models are another example. They provide precise insights into fuel usage and distribution that feed into AI-enhanced route planning and traffic management systems. This results in shortened taxiway times, improved aircraft fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. Global airlines are also finding endless operational use cases to leverage the power of AI optimization.  Lufthansa has been using AI to forecast wind patterns, reportedly achieving up to 40% improvements in accuracy . This helps to reduce flight delays and cancellations while refining flight routes and schedules. By integrating a wider range of data, AI equips airlines to discover the most fuel- and time-efficient route planning for their fleets. 

More efficient air travel

AI has also been a game-changer in cybersecurity, helping to identify anomalies, threats, and patterns and allowing cyber centers to proactively lock down vulnerabilities. Technologies such as single-use digital tokens and facial recognition are used to verify passengers’ identities, aiming to make airport journeys faster and more secure, with less physical contact. 

In aviation and airport security, advanced technologies are reshaping operational efficiency and passenger screening. Generative AI processes vast amounts of operational data to provide tailored improvement recommendations based on daily variations, seasonal demands, and specific airline fleet needs. 

Meanwhile, our partnership with Liberty Defense’s Hexwave AI screening technology has demonstrated the future of security scanning. Hexwave accurately detects metallic objects without inconveniencing passengers to remove items from their pockets. These innovations enhance airport operations and security protocols while offering a more seamless and efficient travel experience for passengers. 

It’s also crucial to balance the pace of innovation with the need for robust protection, ensuring that AI and other emerging technologies are managed with care and accountability. Headlines about wrongful arrests based on facial recognition —or chatbots not properly protecting customer data via encryption—highlight the need for holistic AI governance within aviation. This governance must be crafted in partnership with airports, airlines, businesses, and government officials, as these emerging technologies rapidly shape expectations in our daily lives. 

From my vantage point, AI isn’t killing jobs and creating social havoc in airports and aviation. In fact, quite the contrary. When developed and deployed responsibly, AI is giving our operational teams superpowers that drive system-wide efficiencies, improve customer experiences scaled to millions of travelers, and accelerate more secure and greener air travel.

Youngstown makes travel policy more generous.

YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s board of control today is expected to adopt changes to its meal reimbursement policy for city workers when they travel on official business or to conferences.

The changes include increasing the amounts a city employee can spend on meals and requiring receipts to get reimbursed for food.

“What we’ve encountered since COVID is costs for travel have gone up dramatically and we need to update our reimbursement amounts for food,” said Finance Director Kyle Miasek.

The current policy permits city workers traveling in Ohio to get $40 for meal reimbursements for a 24-hour period and $60 for those traveling out of state.

Those amounts will be increased to $70 and $100.

But city employees who are traveling will not be able to spend all of that money on one meal, Miasek said.

“If the travel is for less than one day, the last thing we want is someone to spend it all on lunch,” he said.

The policy was last updated June 6, 2002.

The new policy allows those traveling on city business or to conferences in Ohio to be reimbursed up to $16 for meals between midnight and 7:59 a.m., $19 for meals between 8 a.m. and 5:59 p.m. and $35 for meals between 6 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., said Kristin Rogers, the city’s general accounting manager who is responsible for overseeing transportation reimbursements.

Those traveling out of state can be reimbursed during the three time periods for up to $20, $30 and $50, respectively, she said.

Tips of up to 20% from the current 15% limit will be permitted.

“The difference in travel costs in the last few years means it’s not easy to stay in the current limits,” Rogers said. “Things have gone up. We wanted to make it more with the times.”

Also, the purchase of alcoholic beverages or reimbursements for entertainment tickets — such as sporting events or movies — are still not permitted, Miasek said.

“We haven’t had any issues and the policy restricts a blanket per diem,” he said.

The current policy permits city workers to get $30 per 24-hour period while away on travel without providing a receipt, Rogers said.

That is being eliminated with the policy being adopted today by the board of control, she said.

“It hasn’t been an issue,” she said. “People kept receipts. But the mayor wanted to make the change.”

Miasek added: “This protects our policy so city taxpayer funds are not used inappropriately.”

KAHULUI–Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke, currently serving as acting Governor of Hawaii, will travel out of state on May 7 to attend her son’s college graduation, followed by a trip to Washington, D.C., according to a press release from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke has been serving as acting Governor from the evening of May 4 through Tuesday evening when Hawaii Attorney General Anne E. Lopez will serve as acting Governor from the evening of May 7 until Governor Green’s return on the morning of May 9.

During her time in D.C., Lt. Gov. Luke will engage with leaders of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community. She is scheduled to speak on a panel at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) Legislative Leadership Conference. Additionally, Luke will hold meetings with officials from the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Agriculture, according to a press release from her office.

Some millennial and Gen X parents are leaving it all behind to spend 6 figures on a family gap year. Here's how they budget and 'worldschool' their kids.

• Immersive travel is key as parents prioritize local experiences to teach their kids other ways to live.

Claire Williams and her husband Matt had what you might call a Cadillac problem .

They were trying to figure out how to best use some money they'd saved. They thought about buying another home or adding an extension to their current one, but while spending time with their kids in quarantine, they realized what they needed more than anything was time.

"We thought, how do you buy time?" Claire, 40, told Business Insider. "The answer we came up with was stepping off the hamster wheel out of the daily grind."

So, Matt left his job of 11 years at an architecture and engineering firm and they set off in June 2022 to travel the world for a year with their then 13-,10-, and 7-year-olds to bond, broaden their worldview, and show the kids "that there are many different ways to live, work, and be happy," said Claire, a stay-at-home mom.

From surfing in Sri Lanka to riding camels in the Sahara, they traveled to six continents and 26 countries. They rented out their Bay Area house, cooked a lot while on the road, and meticulously budgeted for each country, estimating that they spent just shy of $100,000 living abroad for a year, excluding flights, insurance, and back-at-home costs like a storage unit.

Family gap years like this are a chance for 30- and 40-something white-collar parents who have enough cash to leave their jobs behind to show their kids a different way of life. It's a sabbatical with a twist — the kids are in tow and they're leaving their schools behind, too. Parents said they typically mix homeschooling on the road with worldschooling , which prioritizes immersive travel as education.

For a certain set, making a non-traditional move like leaving it all behind to take your kids around the world became even more appealing when the pandemic forced us to rethink life's possibilities.

It's sticking around as the world somewhat normalizes; Reddit is littered with threads looking for family gap year advice , which posters can easily find in various blogs . Travel with immediate family is the top travel trend for 2024, per travel network Virtuoso's Luxe Report . Parents said that while traveling for a year makes finding alone time hard and planning on the go is tiring, the family time is priceless and it can be an escape from the stresses of the modern American economy.

'We wanted to enjoy our kids while we were still their favorite people'

The 2020s economic landscape sent some families packing their bags. More than 50 million Americans quit their jobs in 2022 as burnout and work stress soared. Inflation hit a 40-year high , leading to the Federal Reserve trying to fight back by raising interest rates.

At the same time, those who owned real estate and stocks saw a major spike in wealth, and those who worked from home found increased flexibility, both sparking new possibilities in lifestyle.

Jennifer Spatz, founder of Global Family Travels , said she started receiving requests two-and-a-half-years ago in a newly vaccinated world from families looking to travel and educate their children for a year. She now offers a family gap year and extended travel planning service for $80 to $100 an hour. Once itineraries are approved, she works with travel partners to collect commissions on hotels and experiences.

"It could expand into a big business," she said, adding that her family gap year clients typically have disposable income and kids around 8 to 11 years old. Parents agreed that pre-high school years are the prime time, while kids are young enough to still value family time and old enough to absorb new experiences.

"We wanted to enjoy our kids while we were still their favorite people," said Amy Chang, 44. "If we took time off when they get to high school or college, that doesn't do us any good in building relationships with them because they're going to have their own lives by then."

Chang and her husband Allen were among the 63% of physicians burned out after working through COVID-19. She said their jobs put them in a privileged position to save money, as did having few student loans, living in a house they could afford on one salary, and driving the same car for 12 years. With a solid financial cushion to cover a year's mortgage and traveling, they left central Massachusetts with their then 9- and 7-year-olds in August 2022 for a road trip around the US to visit national parks before heading off to Asia and Europe.

They rented an RV from a local family, cooked on the go, and stayed in Airbnbs. They stayed under budget, which included their savings plus room for an emergency fund after returning home.

"Even though it was a huge expense, it was worth it…even if it means working a little longer on the tail end of our careers," she said.

World lessons, no classroom required

No family gap year is complete without immersive travel. Parents said they've read "The Iliad" while in Greece, attended worship services from different religions, and taught their kids how to navigate a foreign city — all parts of their desire to provide their kids with real-world schooling.

They typically value regenerative tourism, which involves giving back and positively impacting places as you travel. They want a local's experience rather than a cruise or all-inclusive resort, Spatz said. She often plans trips that involve work and education aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , like gender equality or access to clean water. For example, one of her families will be wrapping up their gap year in July in a remote Nepal village, working with a woman who started a school.

"It's learning about the different cultures and history, but taking the kids out of that traditional classroom," she said.

Claire wanted to "get beyond the surface" by participating in Workaway , in which they stayed with local families in exchange for helping them around the home. In Sydney, Australia, they helped a family clean chicken coops on a 300-acre cattle farm. In Santiago, Chile, they helped care for baby quails on a poultry farm. It allowed them to save money and live with locals side-by-side, she said.

Marisa Vitale, 47, has been experiencing different ways people live around the world, often choosing non-touristy areas to understand how the neighborhood works. She and her family lived in a Spanish-intensive homestay in Guatemala, with an indigenous Hmong family in Vietnam, and in an Argentine estancia to learn how the gauchos work the land.

For her 11-year-old-twins, she said has been "a masterclass in history and anthropology," adding that her kids write reports and create art projects for each country they visit.

"Right when they're on the cusp of becoming young adults, what better way to understand who they are and how they feel in their skin than to take them through a wide variety of ways to live," she wrote over email from "deep in the desert" of Jordan, where they were staying in a Bedouin cave. "Empathy, kindness, and patience are the main things I take away from traveling. We wanted our kids to see those in so many different faces and places across the globe."

Her family plans to return to their Los Angeles home, which they rented out, this July. She halted her work as a self-employed photographer and her husband is on a yearlong sabbatical from his 15-year government job. While their monthly budget changes depending on where they're traveling, she estimates that they spend about $10,000 a month between lodging and general expenses, with a small amount of leeway for splurging on an experience.

A year later

A gap year also proves educational for parents. It helped Chang and her husband recalibrate their work lives. She's now doing shift work as an OB-GYN hospitalist — a better work-life balance than her previous work in private practice — and her husband is doing a fellowship to figure out how physicians can use AI.

"He wouldn't have been able to research or think about that at all if he hadn't had the time off," she said.

Re-entry was a little harder for Claire, despite Matt returning to his previous job. She said traveling cost them an average of $261 per day, less per day than their daily life in California. That included food and beverage, lodging, entertainment and experiences, ground transportation and fuel, and miscellaneous living expenses like medicine or SIM cards.

"When you remove your mortgage, gas, insurance — there are so many little things that are gone when you're on the road," she said.

Right now, they're living in Salt Lake City for two years as they contemplate what's next and prepare to launch a podcast about their travels. She hopes to keep the adventure going.

"Our time abroad felt not overwhelmed by consumerism," she said. "In the U.S., everything from highways to shopping to grocery stores is just really big and loud. So much of our gap year was really quiet and authentic and simple."
