Who doesn’t love a lazy river? These 14 family resorts have the best ones in the US

Photos: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kf1omRw4h7UmLnOFTgHfmPPtWE1Ru8j9?usp=sharing

Drifting along a lazy river can offer a peaceful respite during a busy family vacation . I've noticed this flowing-water feature popping up more and more at hotels lately, too. But not all lazy rivers are created equal. The best ones offer enough inner tubes so there's always one available when you’re ready to float, along with a ride that feels more like a meandering journey than a quick loop. Bonus points for fun features like music, lights and a uniquely themed design.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

I’m never one to turn down a lazy river. And now that my daughter's a teenager, it’s probably where you’ll find me, my husband, and any of my traveling friends whenever we're at a resort while the teens are off racing down water slides or otherwise avoiding their parents. Here are my picks for the best U.S. hotels with lazy rivers with kid-friendly and parent-pleasing features.

FLOAT AWAY: 11 best all-inclusive resorts with a lazy river in Mexico and the Caribbean

1. Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort

Orlando, Florida

Take your next theme park vacation up a notch with a stay at Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort . The hotel's on-site Disney Planning Center, complimentary motorcoach transportation to the parks and early theme park entry make visiting the Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios a breeze. But when you need a break from the rides and shows, the AAA Five Diamond resort offers amenities like the 5-acre Explorer Island water park.

It's at the water park where you’ll find a lazy river with spray cannons, a waterfall and a rapids section, and two waterslides, a splash zone and a zero-entry pool. Grown-ups will appreciate the on-site spa, golf course, and the resort’s Michelin-starred rooftop Capa Steakhouse, while the younger members of the family will love spending time at the complimentary kids and teen clubs.

2. Camelback Lodge

Tannersville, Pennsylvania

You can have fun year-round at Camelback Lodge, which is part of Camelback Resort in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. The eight-story mountain hotel is home to Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark , where it’s always 84 degrees and the sun shines through North America’s largest Texlon transparent roof. In addition to braving more than a dozen waterslides here, you can also grab a tube and float down The Lost River.

WATER WORLDS: 13 thrilling outdoor water parks where you can beat the summer heat

Sound effects, LED lights, and features like waterfalls and arching sprays add some excitement to the nearly 500-foot not-so-lazy river. Beyond the water park, the resort also features another indoor fun zone with an arcade, rock-climbing wall, ropes course, bumper cars, and other attractions. And adventure awaits outdoors on the mountainside no matter the time of year.

3. Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa

Oahu, Hawaii

Combining the magic of Disney with the beauty of Hawaii, Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa makes a pretty special place for a family vacation. It's not surprising that the island resort offers lots of fun ways for kids of all ages to make a splash. Within the expansive Waikolohe Valley pool area, the Waikolohe Stream lazy river flows past rock formations, caverns, and springs inspired by Oahu’s natural landscape.

You can grab a tube or enter the stream in a more dramatic way by shooting down the Tubestone Curl waterslide. There are also splash zones and a private snorkeling lagoon to explore, plus beach activities, Disney character experiences, a luau, and all kinds of other family fun to be had at the resort.

4. Fairfield Inn and Suites Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach, Florida

The brand-new Fairfield Inn and Suites Pensacola Beach is home to one of the largest lazy rivers on the Florida Panhandle. At 315 feet-long, the 60,000-gallon water ride takes you past palm trees, three waterfalls and the resort's zero-entry pool. Book one of the King Beachfront Suites that include bunk beds for the kiddos, then spend your days at the pool area or on the white-sand beach.

RESORT REVIEW: I’ve been to every Beaches Resort: Here’s why I think it’s worth the money

A complimentary hot breakfast is available each day, and Fish Heads bar and grill offers fish tacos, cheeseburgers and tropical cocktails with views of the Gulf of Mexico. (You can always work off your dining excesses at the fitness center overlooking Santa Rosa Sound.) The 11-story, 209-room resort also considered function along with fun; it was built with windows that can withstand Category 5 hurricane winds and structural pilings that go down more than seven stories to help it withstand any storm that comes its way.

5. Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa

Koloa, Hawaii

Lava rocks line the lazy river at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa , which floats past waterfalls and secret caves. That’s just one way to get wet at the resort, where you can also take a dip in multi-level pools, a saltwater lagoon with “islands” to swim to, and the Pacific Ocean from the white sands of Poipu Beach.

Rooms and suites with lots of tropical touches offer garden, mountain or ocean views, and the hotel’s restaurants serve dishes made with sustainably sourced ingredients from local vendors. Families can learn more about Hawaiian culture and traditions at the on-site luau and the resort’s cultural center, which offers lessons in hula dancing, playing the ukulele, and making flower leis.

But it might be hard to leave the resort’s 5-acre water park that’s heated and open year-round. The lazy river was designed to give riders the experience of floating on a Texas river, with a dark bottom and live oak trees lining the winding route.

A two-story water slide, multiple pools and a FlowRider wave simulation machine add to the fun, and other resort amenities include a full-service spa, 27-hole golf course, walking and biking trails, and evening s’mores by a campfire. Recently renovated guest rooms blend Texas charm with modern updates.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 13 best all-inclusive family resorts for every age and interest

A 110-foot waterslide and FlowRider simulator offer more high-speed thrills, and the resort's pools are the perfect place to head after a round of golf or spa treatment. 14. Grand Wailea Maui Resort

Maui, Hawaii

You’ll be thankful there's a lazy river at the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool area at Grand Wailea , because you’ll need the break from all the action. Body recovered from Colorado River over 2 weeks after man, dog vanish with homemade raft in Grand Canyon

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 10:58 AM EDT / CBS/AP

The body of a New Mexico man  has been recovered from the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park more than two weeks after he disappeared with his dog, authorities said Monday.

National Park Service personnel were notified Friday about a body being spotted in the river. Authorities said the body appears to that of 58-year-old Thomas L. Robison of Santa Fe.

Park officials said Robison was believed to have attempted to travel down the river with his dog on a wooden raft. Officials previously released a photo of the raft that it is believed Robison used, showing just a few long planks assembled together, along with a paddle and life vest.

screen-shot-2024-04-25-at-8-18-52-am.png

Robison had abandoned his vehicle at  Lees Ferry , a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The site is often used as a launch for whitewater rafting trips along the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner will confirm positive identification of the body.

The National Park Service and medical examiner's office are investigating.

The Colorado River runs nearly 1,500 miles, from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico,  according to American Rivers , a site that catalogues information about the nation's waterways. In the Grand Canyon, the river continues to deepen and widen in the national landmark,  according to the NPS . Whitewater rafting is common in the river.

How to spend a weekend in and around Ontario's 'Amazon river'

Latest Videos

With summer weather around the corner, it’s time to start planning road trips and your next adventure. There’s no need to travel far for beaches, adventures and Amazon-esque views.

A two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city you come to Norfolk County and two Provincial Parks that offer warm waters, sandy beaches and lots to explore.

Where to Explore

There is so much to explore in this area of Southwestern Ontario if you like beaches, water and adventure.

Long Point Provincial Park is a World Heritage biosphere due to its 40 km sandpit. This park, Ontario's 4th oldest, is considered to be one of North America’s top places to see birds with over 300 species migrating there.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Long Point Island Hugger Tours (@long_point_iht)

The park has 1.5km of sandy beaches, a 5km paved road bike path and over 250 campsites to enjoy. The best way to explore is by water renting or bringing a canoe or paddleboard to navigate the sheltered marshes.

Nearby Turkey Point is a smaller Provincial Park. The park boasts 1-4 km of hiking trails, 2km of sandy beaches with sandbars to swim on and what remains of their old golf course.

My favourite part of this area is Big Creek . The river, which is located at and around the Big Creek National Wildlife Area will make you feel like you're in the Amazon. The river is flanked by massive trees and vines that will make you half expect to see some monkeys swinging by.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Long Point Eco-Adventures (@bigcreekpaddle)

There are lots of birds here and hours of river to explore. The water is deep enough to keep you moving in the current yet shallow enough to see the occasional snake or fish swimming along.

Near Port Rowan there are a few launch sites if you have your own gear. If you don't know where to start or don’t have your own kayak or paddleboard, check out Long Point Eco-Adventures . They offer multi-hour tours or rentals for whatever you need.

Long Point Eco-Adventures also offers a massive range of adventure packages including paddling, ziplining, axe throwing, observatory tours and foraging workshops. You can book a day adventures or build them into a multi-day foodie or adventure package.

Lake Erie Beach

Lake Erie Shores.

Where to eat

There are a few recommended restaurants in the area and loads of small breweries and wineries worth checking out. Sandbar on the Beach has a beautiful beach-side patio offering wings, appetizers, burgers and a range of drinks.

A short drive down the road is Jetty Bar and Grill . Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends, they offer tacos, wings, pizzas and more at the ends of Lake Erie.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charlotteville Brewing Company (@charlottevillebrewing)

If you're more in the mood to taste the beers and wines of the region, there are many options to make it a tour. Charlottesville Brewing Company is nestled in the local Carolinian forest and prides itself on its sustainable take on farming and crafting.

Beyond a wide range of beers and flights, they have live music on weekends and other weekday events to consider. Nearby Blueberry Hill Winery sells unique small-batch blueberry-infused ciders and wines using some of the 13 kinds of blueberries grown on-site.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Long Point Eco-Adventures Resort & Retreat Centre (@longpointecoadv)

Burning Kiln Winery offers flights and tasting tours to explore their property. If you can’t decide where to go, consider booking a Norfolk Brewery Tour with Ride the Bines , Toast the Coast or The LOCOL to fully explore the region.

Amazon in Ontario

Big Creek River - Amazon in Ontario

Where to stay

There are a range of options for overnights here. You can glamp with Long Point Eco-Adventures in one of their pods or a large cabin for between $100 to $350 a night for double occupancy. They also run The Harbourview Inn with simple king and mixed bedrooms.

If you're interested in camping, Long Point and Turkey Point offer hundreds of treed campsites bookable on the Ontario Parks website . If you can convince a group of friends to adventure, places like Union Hotel and websites like Airbnb have accommodations for 6+ friends.

It’s tough to say that a $100 billion business finds itself at a critical juncture, but that's the case with Amazon Web Services, the cloud arm of Amazon, and the clear market leader in the cloud infrastructure market. On Tuesday, the company announced that CEO Adam Selipsky was stepping down to spend more time with his family and recharge a bit, according to his statement. During Selipsky’s tenure, growth for the cloud division has slowed pretty dramatically, falling from 33% in Q2 2022 to 12% in Q2 and Q3 2023 before ticking up to 13% and 17% in its two most recent reports -- although to be fair, growth has slowed across the industry, as the space has settled into a more mature state.

Body found in Grand Canyon after man, dog disappeared on homemade raft last month

travel 2015 river

A body located in Arizona waters at the Grand Canyon last week appears to belong to a person who disappeared as he traveled down the Colorado River with his dog on a wooden raft, the National Park Service is reporting.

Thomas L. Robison, 58, of Santa Fe, New Mexico vanished April 21 on the reported excursion, according to the NPS, which released an update on Monday.

NPS personnel were notified on Friday of a body in the river near mile six, the agency announced. Responding rangers recovered the body and transported it to Lees Ferry , a boat launch point at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, then to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.

"Initial information indicates the body is that of missing person Thomas L. Robison," the agency wrote in its statement.

Robison was reported missing last month . His vehicle, officials said, was found abandoned at Lees Ferry.

Autopsy to determine man's cause of death

The county medical examiner was working to officially identity the victim and determine their cause and manner of death, authorities said.

The case remained under investigation on Wednesday by NPS and local authorities.
