As we mentioned above, there is no airport in Side. The nearest international airport is Antalya International (AYT) and from here it takes 1 hour to get to Side by road.

Gazipaşa Airport is located in Alanya and is a second alternative. But it is not an international airport and tickets are difficult to find. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes by road.

How far is Side from Antalya airport? (Antalya to Side Transfer)

It takes 65 km from Antalya to Side and about 1 hour by road.

How long is the transfer from Antalya to Side?

If you prefer a taxi or transfer vehicle from the airport, it will take 40 minutes – 1 hour. If you want to go from Antalya bus station and Konyaaltı, the journey will take 1.30 hours.

3 days will be enough to visit Antalya Side. But if you are planning to visit around (such as Alanya , Antalya center , Kemer , Phaselis ancient city , Olympos ruins Turkey , Chimaera Eternal Flames and more) you should spare at least five days. 1 day is enough to explore ancient Side. The Side Ruins are a must-see if you are visiting Side Turkey. They are an archaeological site that includes the ruins of a Roman theater (Side amphitheater) or Greek Amphitheater, agora, baths, Vespasianus Aniti, and temples (Tyche Tapinagi).

If you're looking for a mix of beach time and history, the resort town of Side is one of the best places to visit on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

Side may be all about soaking up the sun on the sand but for those who fancy a slice of culture with their sunbathing, the wealth of Greco-Roman ruins right in town are major tourist attractions.

The Temple of Athena is dramatically placed on the harbor, with the standing columns looking out to sea, and if you climb to the top tier of seating in the vast Roman theater at the other end of town, you'll get a magnificent view of the stately Taurus Mountains.

More than anything else, though, Side is a place to relax and enjoy the sunshine, and hanging out on the beach is the most popular thing to do.

Although the beaches in town do get packed during the summer months, if you have your own transport, you'll find plenty of less crowded strips of sand within easy reach.

By 1000 BC Side, had its first settlement but it was in the 7th or 6th centuries BC, when Greek settlers established a colony and built a harbor here, that the town began to prosper.

During the Roman era, this town became an important commercial center, and it was only when the harbor began to silt up in the 7th century that the town was eventually abandoned.

Side's huge theater was the largest in ancient Pamphylia and could accommodate an audience of 15,000 in its 49 rows of seating. Although several of the supporting arches have collapsed, bringing down part of the auditorium, this is still a remarkable surviving example of Roman architectural skill.

The fine remains of the town of Seleucia (also known as Seleukia) were part of ancient Pamphylia.

The ruins lie one kilometer above the village of Bucak Seyler, about 15 kilometers north of Side (reached from Side via the Manavgat Waterfalls). The rambling ruins are enclosed within a pine forest, which gives the site a charming lost-in-time ambience.

Little is known of this town's history, and archaeologists still debate its exact identity-some suggest that it is not Seleucia at all but rather the town of Lyrba.

Excavations here during the 1970s unearthed a large baths complex; a well-preserved agora with surviving storerooms, colonnades, and shop rows; a Byzantine era church; and an odeon with a mosaic of Orpheus.

About 18 kilometers southeast of Side, near the small town of cevizli, budding spelunkers can explore one of the deepest cave networks in Turkey.

The Düdencik Caves (Düdencik Magarası) here head 330 meters down into the earth. One of the underground rivers inside the vast cavern network emerges as a karst spring near Pamukluk Köprüsü.

For real cave enthusiasts, another cave complex is farther southeast. The Düdensuyu cave complex (Düdensuyu Magarası) lies next to the village of Akseki. A number of underground lakes here can be visited with a local guide.

An alternative scenic route is with a cross-country vehicle via Manavgat.

Because the seats in the middle of the steps up to the road are leaning on a slope; the upper part is placed on a plane shaped inclined on the vaults.

The modern-day city of Side has become a popular resort town, beckoning travelers with its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and ancient ruins.

Found in the Mediterranean region of southwestern Turkey, just a 30-minute drive from Antalya, the laid-back waterfront city of Side is renowned for its picturesque marina and historical sites — none more famous than the 2nd-century Antique Theater. With several other historical attractions scattered across the town, Side acts as if it's an open-air museum.

History, sun-kissed beaches and stunning landscapes aside, Side's location also makes it a great jumping-off point for half and full-day excursions into the surrounding area — from the ruins of Aspendos to boat trips around Manavgat River Delta, or journeys to the Pamukkale "Cotton Castle" natural spa, there are plenty of fascinating day trips from Side to choose from.

A convenient 10-minute drive from Side, just on the other side of the main highway, Manavgat is known for its waterfall and its Grand Bazaar, as well as its Old Town and its Blue Mosque.

Not only is Manavgat the name the town, it's also the name of the river which flows through it. On most day trips to Manavgat, you'll cruise along the river, passing by the Manavgat Waterfall and soaking up the scenery of five villages that line the banks.

Round-trip transfers, lunch, and a boat tour are all usually included in the price. Some tours also provide scuba diving options.

Sitting in the heart of the Taurus Mountains, about a 30-minute drive from Side, Green Lake is a peaceful getaway known for its turquoise waters — which, depending on the season, range from light green to deep blue.

Most Green Lake tours include a boat cruise on the lake itself, as well as roundtrip transport, lunch, and an optional jeep safari portion which checks off sights such as the Manavgat Waterfall.

A thriving coastal resort town whose history dates back to Byzantine and Ottoman Empire times, Alanya is a little over an hour's drive east from Side.

Here, you'll find the Alanya Castle, which was built in the 13th century, the Red Tower, as well as some of the best beaches on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, namely, Cleopatra Beach.

On most Alanya day trips, you can expect to visit the town and its beaches, ride its cable car, explore Goblin's Cave, and also check out the nearby Sapadere Canyon.

Renowned for its broad, sandy beaches, as well as its historic Old City, Antalya is the ideal spot for a longer day trip from Side — as you'll need around two hours to get there.

Most day trips to Antalya include some free time to visit some of its most famous sites, including Hadrian's Gate, the Karaalioğlu Park with its ancient Roman-era Clock Tower and the Yivli Minaret.

From there, you'll then usually be escorted to the nearby Kurşunlu Waterfall, one of the most spectacular sights in the region.

Koprulu Canyon

Extremely popular for adventure seekers, the Koprulu Canyon is a hub for outdoor activities such as white water rafting, buggy rides and canyoning.

Located about 85 kilometers north of Antalya, this national park is full of dense forests with waterfalls, streams, and offroad trails aplenty.

Most day trips to the Koprulu Canyon National Park are focused on rafting, jeep safaris or buggy tours.

Green Canyon

Just out the back of the Green Lake is where you'll also find the Green Canyon , home to the 470-hectare Oymapinar Dam, which is one of the largest dams in Turkey.

Day trips here typically spend most of the time on the water itself as part of a cruise — and, during summer, you'll have time to swim in the emerald waters. However, depending on your chosen tour, you might also get to take a jeep ride around the trails of the dam.

Taurus Mountains

Towering over the Mediterranean coastline up to 3,700 meters high, the Taurus Mountains serve as the breathtaking backdrop for many of the day trips from Side.

Most of the tours are centered around an off-road jeep excursion, which aims to provide an overview of the region, combining historic villages with offroad nature trails, ancient aqueducts, and occasionally, the beautiful Green Lake.

If you prefer to get behind the wheel yourself, you can swap the jeep for a quad bike or buggy.

Acting as a natural Turkish bath, the breathtaking travertine terraces of Pamukkale have been a UNESCO World Heritage site for decades.

On a day trip from Side, you'll have time to swim in the thermal pools of the so-called Cotton Castle before exploring the ancient city of Hierapolis and taking a dip in the famous Cleopatra’s Pool.

Dolphin Island

An isolated island that can only be reached by booking a tour, Dolphin Island welcomes visitors with its secluded beach and crystal-clear waters.

The island is the perfect spot for a day of swimming, snorkeling and relaxing on the peaceful beach. Depending on your tour, you can also take an optional boat trip where – if you're lucky – you'll get to spot wild dolphins in their natural habitat.

Sapadere Canyon

A hidden gem in the Taurus Mountains, about 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Side, Sapadere Canyon is a 750-meter-long canyon with a 400-meter-high ceiling. Open-aired scenery aside, it's also home to the fascinating Guceler Cave (also known as the Dwarf Cave).

Offering the chance to swim beneath a waterfall, this Side day trip option is best enjoyed in the summer.

Sitting not too far from Pamukkale, the ancient ruins of Hierapolis date back to the 2nd Century B.C.

Despite its age, much of the city remains intact and you can still explore the Hierapolis Theater, the necropolis, and the Pamukkale Antique Pool — as well as the nearby ruins of Laodikeia.

Most Hierapolis trips will include time at the hot springs as well as a traditional Turkish lunch.

Eagle Canyon

Rising around 1,100 meters above sea level, Eagle Canyon is a hidden paradise tucked away in the Taurus Mountains, within Koprulu Canyon.

The canyon's main attraction is the massive rock formations that tower on either side of the Köprüçay River.

Besides the short hike to the canyon and the breathtaking views that await, day trips here also usually stop at the ancient city of Selge and the Oluk Bridge.

Antalya Aquarium

One of the biggest aquariums in the world, the Antalya Aquarium boasts an impressive selection of over 7,000 different species.

The world-renowned aquarium is packed with fun activities for visitors of all ages, from the world's longest undersea aquarium tunnel (at 131 meters) to shark feeding and the Snow World & Ice Museum, to name a few.

The aquarium itself can usually be seen in a few hours. For that reason, many packages also combine the Duden Waterfall or an Antalya city highlights tour into your adventure.

Located roughly 4 hours down the coast from Side, Kekova is a small island whose main attraction is its sunken city, Simena. Here, you can explore the Dolchiste ruins — an ancient Lycian settlement that was submerged by earthquakes in the 2nd century A.D.

Given the distance, most Kekova day trips are combined with Myra and Demra, two other spectacular ancient cities.

Home to the renowned 4th-century Saint Nicholas Church, Demre isn't as well known as other nearby ancient sites, such as Myra, but its historical significance should not be underestimated.

Given the proximity, Demre tours are usually combined with Myra.

Sitting just above the town of Demre, Myra is home to some of the best-preserved Lycian rock tombs in all of Turkey.

Myra has a lot more to offer than just its tombs though, with an ancient Greek theater, Roman baths, and countless remains from the city's past.

Depending on your tour, you might also visit the sunken city of Simena or take a boat trip around Kekova Island.

The Trips formation is one of the most popular formations in football.

A lot of teams use it in the modern game because it allows offenses to both spread the field and create confusion + chaos.

Below I'll explain what trips formation is, why it's so popular, and then we'll break down 4 of the best plays to run out of Trips formation.

What is Trips Formation?

Trips Formation has 3 wide receivers stacked on the same side of the field.

This can cause a lot of confusion for the opposition team.

Offenses can run it out of the  shotgun formation or with the quarterback under center -- though most teams prefer to run it out of shotgun today.

In addition, most offenses will also have another wide receiver lined up to the opposite side of the formation all by himself. Doing so forces the defense to put at least one cornerback to that side of the field.

Why Trips Formation Works

Trips Formation is great at creating mismatches.

First, it forces the defense to either go with the Nickel formation , with five defensive backs on the field; or have a linebacker cover a receiver.

Next, it forces the defense to either:

1. Put four of those players to the side of the field with Trips -- which leaves the other receiver one-on-one.

2. Or put a safety over top of the lone receiver -- which puts all three receivers on the Trips side to be one-on-one.

And Trips can get even more confusing...

Well-designed plays have the receivers on the Trips side running in different directions, which forces the defenders to sometimes cross in front of each other.

It's easy for defenders to lose their man against Trips or to even bump into each other, creating plenty of open spaces for receivers.

Best Trips Formation Plays

Play #1: smash.

Smash is a play in which the two inside receivers will attack the deep part of the field, while the two outside receivers will run short routes.

This is a great play as it attacks the defense on multiple levels, and creates different looks on each side of the field.

Against zone, Smash usually sees the outside receivers having only one defender on them, with the safeties helping out on the deep routes.

This means that the outside receivers will have a lot of open space if they can shake that first defender.

On this play, the lone receiver on the left and the outside receiver on the right will run inside Hitch routes . The H will run a Deep Post toward the middle of the field, while the Z will run a Deep Corner toward the near sideline.

Play #2: Box

Box is a play that looks to cause confusion in the middle of the field.

By running three out of the four routes toward the middle, there will be many defenders running in front of each other and to the same place on the field.

It's easy for receivers to get lost among all these bodies, and then come out wide open as a result.

By having the two outside routes attack the deep area of the field, it leaves a lot of room for the underneath routes to run after the catch.

The X will run a Deep Post toward the middle of the field, while the Y will run a Go route down the right sideline. 

The H will run a Shallow Drag from right to left, with the Z running a Dig/In route about 10 yards downfield.

Play #3: Skinny Post Attack

The Skinny Post Attack is great at attacking the defense at three different depths on the Trips side of the field -- all toward the middle of the field.

This often causes defenders to have to make a choice as to which receiver to cover -- especially the safeties .

Since the X on the outside will run a Deep Fade down the left sideline, he's often matched up one-on-one and could find himself free deep.

The X will run that Deep Fade down the left sideline.

On the Trips side, the H will run a Skinny Post , the Z will run a Deep Hitch, and the Y will run a Deep Post.

Play #4: Scissors

Scissors if the perfect example of how the Trips formation can use routes that cross each other to cause confusion.

In this play, the two receivers to the right in Trips will run mirroring routes that will cross each other at some point.

This will hopefully cause defenders to either run into each other, stumble trying to avoid each other, or just plain lose their coverage man.

Meanwhile, the two other receivers will run clear-out routes to take advantage of what should be a lot of free space.

The Y will run a Deep Post while the Z will run a Deep Corner .

The H will run a Shallow Drag while the X will run a straight Go route.

Many teams in today's game use the Trips formation, in some form, because of the many advantages it has.

While most offenses that use Trips will do so out of shotgun, it is a formation quarterbacks can use under center, too.

It causes a lot of confusion among the defense and creates great mismatches at just about every level.

What's more, it also helps to isolate one great receiver on your team, allowing him to often match up one-on-one against a defender.

16 Things To Know When Visiting Niagara Falls USA Side

Some destinations are on everyone’s travel bucket list. The Niagara Falls are such a destination, every traveler dreams to see them at least once. For me, that was certainly the case. I had traveled the western parts of Canada before, but because of the Niagara Falls, I also really wanted to explore and travel to the eastern parts of Canada.

1. Are the Niagara Falls in Canada or the USA?

The Niagara Falls are a special place, as their location is spread across two countries: Canada and the USA. The Niagara Falls actually form the border between the USA and Canada, so they are located in both countries.

From both countries, the Niagara Falls are very easily accessible. Toronto on the Canadian side is the closest city to the falls, it takes about two hours to drive from Toronto to the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls.

2. How far is Niagara Falls from NYC?

From NYC to the Niagara Falls take almost 7 hours. You can easily rent a car and drive up if you are up for a road trip. The Niagara Falls are connected to many East Coast destinations, such as New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC via Amtrak train. Be aware that the drive from these cities takes a bit longer on the American side than on the Canada side.

You can also fly from NYC to Buffalo which only takes 1,5 hours and then drive from Buffalo to the American side of the Niagara Falls in less than 30 minutes.

3. Niagara Falls USA vs. Niagara Falls Canada

They share one thing, these amazing falls and the rather similar activities they both offer to experience these falls. But other than that, these two destinations are completely different. I visited both the Canadian side and the Niagara Falls USA side to check out which one I prefer the most.

I chose to stay at the USA side of the Niagara Falls, a random decision. But after exploring both sides of the Falls intensively, I can say I like the American side of the Niagara Falls much more and would definitely stay there again.

If you want that famous view of the Niagara Falls, that postcard and classic photo view, you have to be at the Canadian side, this is where you’ll get the best view of the Niagara Falls.

Straight after crossing the bridge, and the border, you’ll see that the Canadian side is all about (souvenir) shops, restaurants, bars and attractions. Clifton Hill is the world famous street of fun by the falls. It’s full of attractions and entertainment, like Ripley’s Believe it or Not. To me, it felt like walking through Las Vegas, so many lights and so much noice, it really felt like an amusement park to me and that is one of the reasons why I prefer the Niagara Falls USA side.

Exploring the American side of the falls, I immediately noticed how much more peaceful and quiet this side was. Their Niagara Falls State Park is the center place of most of the Niagara Falls NY attractions. It’s a large nature park where you can enjoy the falls and have a lovely walk around. Focused on nature’s beauty, that’s the way I like it. 

Summed up, if you’re looking for entertainment and attractions, more dining options and shops, the Canadian side is your place to be. It’s also the busiest side of the falls, so be prepared for the crowds.

If you’re more like me, and want to visit the Niagara Falls because of its natural beauty, then the American side is your best choice. It’s much more quieter and focused on the nature and beauty of these falls.

4. Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass

You’re probably not leaving the falls without doing at least one of the amazing and thrilling attractions Niagara Falls USA has to offer. 

If you do so, and also want to save some money, consider the Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass. It is your perfect companion if you want to do it all, and save some dollars at the same time.

Some of the Niagara Falls attractions included are the famous Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds. But you can also visit the Niagara Adventure Theater and the Aquarium of Niagara, plus unlimited rides on the Scenic Trolley. When visiting Niagara Falls USA I would totally recommend the Discovery Pass.

The Discovery Pass becomes valid each year when both famous Niagara Falls attractions Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist are back open and operating, mostly from June to October.

With the Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass you’ll have one admission to each attraction, which doesn’t need to be used the day of purchase. You can use this pass throughout your stay. Be aware however that all passes will expire at the end of the season.

5. How long do you need to spend at Niagara Falls

There are many awesome and cool things to do at Niagara Falls. To really experience the falls, I would advise to stay at least 2 nights and do minimum one or two of these activities. Step on board the famous Maid of the Mist and get soaked by the falls, or experience the Cave of the Winds and nearly touch the falls.

6. Maid of the Mist

When visiting the Niagara Falls, this thing to do is probably the first to come to mind. These are the boats that are on every photo, cruising passengers right into the falls. If time is limited, or for whatever reason you can only do one excursion while visiting Niagara Falls, it has to be this one!

Like they say on their website, ‘It’s the only way to experience one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders right here in the USA’.

The Maid of the Mist tours go every 15 minutes, and you’ll be on the boat for about 20 minutes. Before entering the Maid of the Mist you’ll be provided with a poncho. And believe me, you absolutely need it!

Even though you’re provided with a poncho, you’re most likely to get wet or even soaked! If you want to take photos or video, make sure to take a waterproof camera (GoPro is a great recommendation) with you, as it will get wet.

I was lucky enough to be the first in line for the next boat. So I could make my way to the very front of the boat and experienced the Maid of the Mist boat ride the best possible way.

When doing the Maid of the Mist, you’ll also have access to the Observation Tower, another Niagara Falls NY attraction. I had a lovely sunny day when doing the Maid of the Mist, so after getting soaked I went up to the Observation Deck to enjoy the views and let the sun dry my clothes a bit.

7. Cave of the Winds

Get even closer to the falls than you ever imagined being possible. Your adventure starts before going down to the falls, showing a short movie. Learn how Nikola Tesla harnessed the power of the Falls to create alternating current. Experience what Niagara Falls USA looked like before it was a park and witness why people from all over the world have been drawn to the edge of the Falls.

After the short movie you’re provided with a plastic bag, to keep your shoes dry, and fancy souvenir sandals to wear during the Cave of the Winds experience. Be prepared for another unique experience!

The elevators will take you down nearly 55 meters into the Niagara Gorge. From here you’re free to go. There is a series of wooden walkways that eventually will bring you to the unbelievable Hurricane Deck, the most thrilling Niagara Falls USA attraction. Here you’re just a few feet away from the crashing Bridal Veil Falls and surrounded by tropical storm like conditions. An experience like no other!

The Cave of the Winds is a timed ticketed attraction. Make sure to get tickets before you arrive if you don’t want to miss out. They’re open all year round, please be aware that some parts are closed during the Winter season.

Like I said, they provide you with sandals to wear during the experience. They are yours to take home as a souvenir if you want to. If you don’t want to take them home, please recycle them at the recycle points in the park.

8. Niagara Jet Adventures

This one is for all dare devils! You can experience the Niagara River during all four seasons with their climate controlled and covered boats. They are located a short, 30 minute drive from the Niagara Falls on the US side. The boats are waiting to take you onto the Niagara River. Most seats are covered, however if you want to get soaked (again) they do have some wet deck seats as well. But remember, if you sit on the wet deck, you will be soaked and need a change of clothing!

The Niagara Jet Adventures tours take about 45-60 minutes, so you absolutely get your money’s worth.

9. Fireworks and Illuminations of the Falls

Throughout the year, every night, the Niagara Falls are illuminated. Hundreds of LED lights are housed in three locations across the Niagara Gorge, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Every evening these lights work to create a breathtaking view, absolutely not to be missed. These illuminations start every evening at dusk. The views of the Falls during these illuminations are magical, and best viewed from Prospect Point, Niagara Falls State Park.

If you’re lucky enough you might even witness the remarkable Niagara Falls US State Park fireworks show, which can also be experienced throughout the year. Check the Niagara Falls State Park website for the fireworks schedule. Fireworks performances are weather permitting. 

10. Niagara Falls State Park

The Niagara Falls State park is the oldest state park in America, and a must visit when visiting the Niagara Falls on the US side. This park is open 365 days a year. You’re surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery but can also find most of the Niagara Falls USA attractions mentioned in this article right here in this state park. There are miles of hiking trails and some nice dining options for the whole family.

Visiting the Niagara Falls State Park is an adventure-packed experience, spend your day here to truly experience the amazing falls.

12. Crossing the border into Canada at Niagara Falls USA

I visited the Niagara Falls as part of my trip through the eastern parts of Canada and the USA. I traveled from Toronto to the falls first and then crossed into Niagara Falls American side. 

Unfortunately I totally underestimated this. It took me nearly two hours to cross the border from Canada into the USA. They took my passport which I had to get back at the immigration office, where many people were waiting for their passport too.

So, if you’re travelling from Canada and staying on the American side of the Niagara Falls, be aware you have to cross the border and that it can take time. Once you have you passport back, and crossed the border, crossing the bridge during the rest of your stay is easy!

13. Always bring your passport

Also good to know, whenever you’re crossing the bridge/border, always make sure you have your passport with you. I crossed several times, because I also wanted to experience the Canadian side of the falls. There are immigration officers on both sides checking your passport. Crossing the bridge (and border) by foot requires a small fee every time you do so.

14. Best time to visit Niagara Falls

Summer is the best time to visit the Niagara Falls, but of course also the busiest time of the year. June to August is peak season, but because of the warmer temperatures the best time to get soaked in the thrilling Niagara Falls attractions like Cave of the Winds, Niagara Jet Adventures, Maid of the Mist. In winter if you are really lucky the Niagara Falls can be completely frozen.

15. Best place to stay American side of Niagara Falls

The Giacomo Hotel is located in one of the most iconic buildings at the American side of the Falls, and it happens to be a lovely hotel too. Experience luxury in the heart of Niagara Falls US side. The Giacomo Hotel was my base while staying at the falls. At walking distance from all major Niagara Falls NY attractions, great service, basic but good breakfast and complimentary valet parking for your car, I couldn’t have asked for more.

The Giacomo boutique hotel is housed in the United Office Building which was built in 1929, completely in art deco architecture. In 2010 it was renamed the Giacomo and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has become the premiere luxury boutique hotel in Niagara Falls USA.

Because of its perfect location, the rooftop of the Giacomo is also the perfect place to watch the fireworks and the illuminations of the falls at night.

16. Best restaurant Niagara Falls American side

Located in the state park is the Top of the Falls restaurant, the only restaurant overlooking the Niagara Falls. This restaurant offers visitors to the Niagara Falls State Park a one-of-a-kind dining experience. 

Their menu offers a modern American cuisine and classic dishes. And of course every dish comes with these spectacular waterfall views.

5 Day Trips on the Olympic Peninsula’s West Side

With the town of Forks as your West Side basecamp, experience unique small towns and communities while learning about centuries-old Native American traditions and culture. Marvel at dramatic waterfalls and a glacier-fed lake or soak in soothing hot springs. Traverse a lush rain forest, beach or wilderness trail. Or follow in the tracks of your favorite Twilight character. Keep reading to learn about five day trips on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula.

Day 1: HOH RAIN FOREST AND KALALOCH BEACHES

Hoh Rain Forest The  Hoh Rain Forest   sits atop the list of must-dos on the Olympic Peninsula. One of only a handful of protected temperate rain forests in the Northern Hemisphere, this misty, moisture-laden area sees an average of 140 inches of annual rainfall.

Stop at the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center   for information. Outside the door, there are three easy loop trails worth exploring. The Hall of Mosses Trail (.8 miles), the Spruce Nature Trail (1.2 miles) and a paved, quarter-mile nature path easily accommodating wheelchairs and strollers.

Kalaloch Beaches As you travel 15 miles west, you’ll find yourself on the scenic Pacific Ocean coast. Easy access is available in the  Kalaloch   (pronounced clay-lock) area along Highway 101. Pebble-strewn Beach Trail 4 offers dramatic surf and brimming tidepools at low tide. Check tides before you go.

Don’t miss Ruby Beach , aptly named for its ruby-like rocks in the beach sand. Wander among sea stacks and driftwood logs then imagine the long-ago gold mining operation that stood on this spot in the early 1900s.

Day 2: AROUND FORKS AND LA PUSH

The rural timber community of Forks offers restaurants, lodging and a variety of services. Make your first stop the  Forks Visitor Information Center and the Forks Timber Museum , located right next door.

West of Forks, visit  Rialto Beach . At low tide, follow the beach a mile and a half to Hole-in-the-Wall , a rock arch carved out by the surf. The ocean views, pounding waves, sea stacks and driftwood will leave you breathless.

Visit La Push , home to the Quileute tribe. This hospitable community offers lodging, restaurants, a marina, fishing charters and three outstanding beaches.

Day 3: EXPLORE THE NORTHWEST COAST

Follow Washington SR-112, the  Strait of Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway ,  and take in jaw-dropping views of the Strait and Canada’s Vancouver Island. This dramatic stretch of highway is a birder’s paradise with the  Great Washington State Birding Trail   guide providing a comprehensive list of species and viewing sites.

Some of the best tidepools in Washington state can be found at Slip Point near  Clallam Bay . You can access the county day-use park in town. Be sure to check the tides and allow plenty of time. In  Sekiu , stroll the boat marinas and watch for halibut, lingcod or red snapper caught fresh from the water. Be on the lookout for gray whales that feed in the shallow reefs along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Explore the remote and historic town of  Neah Bay , steeped in tribal tradition and culture as well as being a popular destination for sport fishing, kayaking, surfing, birding and scuba. Enjoy a breathtaking hike to Cape Flattery, the most northwestern point of the contiguous 48 states. A visit to the  Makah Cultural and Research Center  is a must. Learn about the Makah tribe’s centuries-old connection to the land and sea plus view a fascinating exhibit of tribal artifacts more than 500 years old. (Check the open status of Neah Bay before traveling.)

Day 4: OZETTE WILDERNESS HIKE

The northwest entrance to  Olympic National Park  is your gateway to 57 miles of coastal wilderness at  Lake Ozette , your starting and stopping point for the nine-mile Cape Alava Loop ( Ozette Loop Triangle ) .

Three miles of plank-and-stair trail lead through dense forest before opening onto the beach at Cape Alava. Take a moment to absorb that you’re near the site of an ancient Makah tribal village, partially buried in a mudslide, more than five centuries ago. (The closed site is marked by a memorial kiosk.) Explore the rocky shores and reefs at low tide. You’ll pass dozens of ancient Makah petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks, the first headland south of the trailhead. Sand Point, the southern tip of the triangle, is a prime spot for agate hunting and home to a sizable sea otter population. A large disk marks a trail near the woods that will take you inland. A level planked trail (2.8 miles) leads you back to Lake Ozette.

Hiking Note: Check tide tables to time your beach trek with outgoing tides .

Day 5: LAKE CRESCENT, WATERFALLS AND SOL DUC HOT SPRINGS

From Forks, travel north and east along Highway 101. The often photographed  Sol Duc Falls   can be reached on a short trail (.8 miles) from the end of Sol Duc Hot Springs Road off Highway 101. The turquoise-colored waters of stunning  Lake Crescent  offer swimming, boating, fishing and diverse hiking trails. Take a nearby forested trail with waterfall rewards to  Marymere Falls , an easy one-mile hike. East of the lake on Olympic Hot Springs Road you’ll find Madison Falls . Stroll the paved 600-foot path near the tollbooth to see the cascade in action. On the north shore of Lake Crescent, the spectacular, universally accessible ten-mile-long Spruce Rail Road Trail follows the old rail grade along the shoreline.

11 of the Best Route 66 side trips to add to your road trip

Whether it’s your first road trip across the US or you’re looking to spice up a regular drive along Route 66, adding some side trips into your itinerary makes a lot of sense for some people.

When we first traveled the road we weren’t ever sure we’d return to this part of the world so it was important for us to tick off some of these amazing Route 66 side trips. Many of them are very special places and high up on lots of people’s bucket lists so I guess the question is ‘why not add them?’

While these destinations do make wonderful side trips off Route 66, it can eat into your Mother Road time so do be aware of that – some are close by and others might take up a full day or two. Coming from the UK with smaller distances, many of these feel like a long way to me, but I know for those who are used to it they can be doable!

This list is in no particular order but you might notice that there are a LOT more towards the west side of the country. If I’m missing anything that you think should be on this list then please do comment below and share with any other readers! Thanks!

Monument Valley

Distance from Route 66: 165 miles approx

(You could feasibly explore Monument Valley from many jumping off points along New Mexico or Arizona . Mileage shown is from Chambers, just east of the Petrified Forest National Park , AZ to the border with Utah.)

While it’s not a simple day trip, requiring a decent amount of driving, Monument Valley is top of many visitors lists to explore.

Wide open spaces, classic movie backdrops that will send you back in a fit of nostalgia and endless photo opportunities here. This is Navajo Tribal land and permits must be purchased to explore the area. You can also go on guided tours like this one which can help with understanding the area.

Since Monument Valley requires a decent amount of driving to there and once there many people decide to stay overnight nearby. There isn’t a huge amount of choice but the iconic Gouldings Lodge has to be worth checking out if you can get a room.

Grand Canyon

Distance from Route 66: 60 miles (from Williams, AZ)

This is the classic side trip from the Route 66 road and it’s one that I definitely recommend since it’s actually not too far from the road and can be easily done in a day if you want to. We added it in to our first trip really easily.

Grand Canyon National Park doesn’t really need any explanation – amazing views as far as the eye can see and a real sense of wonder at the world.

You can take a hike, with many available for all abilities, or just explore the rim and visitor centers. Anyone with kids might like to get them to complete the Junior Ranger workbooks too which was a highlight for us! (yes, even me!)

The Grand Canyon and Route 66 is a perfect pairing for those who are exploring things to do along Route 66 in Arizona providing a perfect blend of stunning scenery and classic Route 66 stops! The South Rim is the easier part to access but you can feasibly explore any area around if you have some time.

Horseshoe Bend

Distance from Route 66: 130 miles (from Flagstaff, AZ)

Another wonder of this area is Horseshoe Bend near Page, AZ. You’ll have seen it on countless travel magazines, Instagram and social media pictures and it’s an instantly reconizable place.

A visit here could be incorporated into a Monument Valley trip or alternatively the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. There’s a car park by the famous view but do be aware that it can get incredibly busy, especially at peak times such as sunset.

Distance from Route 66: 75 miles (from Kingman, AZ)

An absolute feat of modern engineering, Hoover Dam is an incredible day trip from the road and not too far either. It’s not a side trip that will take too much of your day either so it’s an easy one to add in and not miss too much of Route 66.

If you have more time you might like to check out some hikes around the area or take a guided tour of the dam. You don’t need to do tours to see it in all its glory though!

A side trip to Hoover Dam from Route 66 works really well with a Las Vegas visit too!

Distance from Route 66: 107 miles (from Kingman, AZ)

Looking for neon, exuberance and craziness? If the quirky, yet more serene, sights of Route 66 aren’t quite enough perhaps a trip to the city of Las Vegas is for you?

With shows, casinos and more neon than you can ever imagine – it’s somewhere that I personally had to see to believe! It’s not too far from Route 66 and if you want to stay overnight you can find plenty of deals from the big chain hotels.

Palm Springs, CA

Distance from Route 66: 55 miles (from San Bernardino, CA)

If you’re not quite ready for your road trip to end, you’re not ready for the crazy LA scene or if you want to explore more of California then you might like to add Palm Springs to your list.

You have retro chic in many of the buildings here, mountains to hike around giving gorgeous views and Joshua Park NP on your doorstep. There’s plenty to explore nearby for sure!

It’s not too far from Route 66, you could get there from San Bernardino before hitting LA proper or you could go from Needles on the East side although you’d miss much of the California Route 66 sights doing it that way.

Roswell, NM

Distance from Route 66: 135 miles (from Santa Rosa, NM)

If you’re driving Route 66 for all the quirkiness then you might also love a trip to Roswell, home of UFO sightings, tales of aliens and more. Heading south from the road along New Mexico you’ll soon find yourself here.

There’s plenty to do in town with museums, natural spaces to walk round and history to learn about.

If you’re traveling this way you might want to consider the next item on the list too.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM

Distance from Route 66: 235 miles (from Santa Rosa, NM)

Not a particularly short side trip and probably not one that can be done in a day, but if you’re looking to tick off National Parks this one might be worth adding to it. It could also be incoporated into a visit to Roswell too.

Explore the caverns and some wonderful hikes around the area too. If you’re around for the evening in the summer months you might also like to check out the bat flight program where you can watch as hundreds fly out each evening in search of food!

Palo Duro Canyon State Park, TX

Distance from Route 66: 30 miles (from Amarillo, TX)

Probably the shortest side trip on this page and one that is more than easily doable even for those who are exploring on a tight schedule or perhaps those who are just exploring Route 66 through Texas .

If you’ve already ticked off the Grand Canyon then maybe you’ll be interested to know that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest in the country – definitely worth checking out! Lots of trails and hikes to cover in and a visitor center to learn more about the area.

Laura Ingalls Wilder home, MO

Distance from Route 66: 50 miles (from Springfield, MO)

Something a little bit different for those who, like me, are big fans of the Little House on the Prairie books. This isn’t one of the original locations that she wrote about, but is her last home and the place where she wrote her books and her auto-biography . Of course, the pioneers are a big part of the Route 66 story so if that part of its history interests you then this is a great place to visit.

You can tour the house here and see her writing desk and room where the legacy began to take shape. Check out their website here .

It’s not too far from Route 66 if you’re exploring around Missouri .

Wichita Mountains wildlife refuge, OK

Distance from Route 66: 70 miles (from Clinton, OK)

Just south or Route 66 as it drives through Oklahoma is another wonderful place to come if nature, walking and getting outdoors is one of the things you like to do on your road trips. It’s not too far and can be done in a day.

It’s home to lots of wildlife but most specifically it has bison herds which you may be able to see on some trails. The visitor center is a great place to start to get information on the trails and what to see when you’re there. Check their site out for more information here .

Nothing beats a road trip: you get to sit back and enjoy the open road and scenery. And what puts the whole experience over the top, are the quirky roadside attractions you encounter along the way. The best thing about roadside attractions is that they’re quick and easy to visit, no matter what state you’re in. Stratton's Grave in Mountain Grove Cemetery is a fun one to visit; p ark-like and stunning, Mountain Grove Cemetery captures the beauty of architecture and rural Connecticut... plus it offers insight into local history. Did you know Connecticut has a bit of circus history? Charles "Tom Thumb" Stratton was a superstar of Barnum's Circus and stood at only 3'8". A life size statue of him sits atop his obelisk in Bridgeport. And of course, you have to visit Paul Bunyan.  You may know Paul Bunyan as a conqueror of the wild frontier, but a statue in his honor in New England somehow feels right. In Cheshire, no sign can stand above seven feet tall. So when the town made a fuss about the lumber business House of Doors erecting this 26-foot beauty, they got creative. Replacing the ax with a flag made it a flag pole, which has no height limitations. It's epic! One final roadside attraction of note: Eagle Rock.  Just past the intersection of Buck Road in Hebron is a rock that has been shaped and painted to resemble a bald eagle!

What’s a Side to Side Cruise and Why Should I Book One?

Most veteran cruisers know what a back to back (b2b) cruise is, where you stay on the same ship for consecutive cruises (check out my Guide to B2B Cruising if you’re new to the idea). And many, like me, have dreamed of retiring to a b2b2b2b2b2b2b2…until death. But I’ve recently changed my plans, and you might consider doing so too once you learn about side to side (s2s) cruising.

What’s a Side to Side Cruise?

It’s not a new dance move your kid will teach you only so they can laugh when you look like an octopus trying to navigate their first venture onto land wearing four pairs of ill fitting roller skates. A side to side cruise is when you disembark one ship only to embark on another ship at the same port on the same day. I have my first one planned for a few weeks from now when I’ll disembark the Discovery Princess then walk next door to immediately board the Celebrity Solstice at the San Pedro Cruise Terminal in Los Angeles.

While I suspect the vast majority of my readers are currently plotting how to fake an extended illness so they can get off work long enough to try it too, a few may be skeptical. So allow me to convince you…

Why Should I Book a Side to Side Cruise?

1. for a vacation from your vacation..

The transition back to regular life after a cruise can be exhausting and cause one to utter that well-worn phrase: “I need a vacation from my vacation!” Solution? Book another cruise! A “recovery cruise,” so to speak. This is the primary reason I’m trying my first side to side. Let me explain.

I have a kid. Who will be joining me on the first cruise. And will probably try teaching me a new dance move. Now while no one wants to admit that they low-key dislike their children at times, one doesn’t need to be strapped to the lie detector machine to acknowledge that vacationing with children isn’t always super relaxing. Yes, it’s fun to see their excitement and watch them take in new experiences and make memories as a family and blah, blah, blah. But it’s also work! So I’m sending my son and husband home (“Bye guys, I’ll miss you!” And the lie detector says, THAT’S a lie!) and hopping on a solo cruise so I can relax and unwind after my first cruise. (That has to be the most privileged, first-world thing I have ever said – let me be clear how humbled and thankful I am to have a life that allows me to say that. And DO that!)

Okay, but why a side to side instead of a back to back?

2. To avoid boredom .

I’ve never been bored on a cruise. And my only concern about an extended cruise on the same ship is missing my dog. However, I also like the idea of mixing things up a bit. By switching ships, one can experience different activities and entertainment, different restaurants and bars, different scenery, and a new crew. On a back to back, you’ll likely experience the same menus, same activities and entertainment, same crew, and maybe even the same ports. You can really mix things up by switching to an entirely different cruise line and itinerary (which is what I’m doing).

3. To create a custom itinerary.

Side by side cruising can allow you to create your dream itinerary. Or at least a really cool itinerary not offered on a single ship. My side by side cruise takes me to both Mexico and the California Coast.

4. Because you can’t decide between two ships.

Book them both! Plus you’ll achieve to your goal of sailing every cruise ship at sea faster if you book side to sides instead of back to backs.

5. To justify overeating.

Walking from one ship to the other has to burn at least enough calories to justify a third dessert at dinner each night, right?

6. To hide.

This one doesn’t really apply to me because I only ever need to hide from my family and they’re aware of my plans to board the Celebrity Solstice after our tearful (ha!) goodbye. But maybe you’re trying to elude someone like the police or an assassin. Ship hopping will make you harder to track!

Too out there? Okay, but speaking of getting caught, you might be wondering: that all sounds good, but what’s the catch?

What’s the Catch? Disadvantages of Side to Side Cruising

While I’m generally sold on side to side cruising, there are a few disadvantages when compared to back to back cruising. First, you have to pack up after your first cruise. My second favorite thing to do on a back to back cruise is to take a photo of the exterior of my cabin door on the last night and post it to social media with the caption: what’s missing from this photo? Then I keep people in suspense for a few hours before following up with: MY LUGGAGE! I also enjoy gloating at dinner when my table mates ask about my plans for the evening: NOT PACKING!

But on a side to side, you have to pack and move your stuff over to a new ship and cabin.

My first favorite thing to do on a back to back is to use that glorious time after debarkation and before embarkation when I have the ship almost totally to myself to secure a prime lounger that I will hog all week because no one, passenger or crew, is brave enough to move the seedy romance novel I have reserving it for fear that someone might think it theirs (you should consider that one of my best cruising tips, btw).

On a side to side, you’ll have to sprint to that prime lounger on embarkation day with your seedy romance novel only to discover a back to backer left their smelly gym shorts on it!

You’ll recall that earlier I said my plans for retirement have changed. In light of discovering side to side cruising, my new plan is b2b s2s b2b s2s b2b…death. Who’s with me? And with that…

My wife bought me a California road atlas, and it became part of our scenic drive ritual: We’d consult its pages for inspiration, looking for two-lane roads and state highways that squiggled through mountain ranges or meandered through deserts. After returning home, I’d highlight our route. Four years after our first drive, the atlas is full of highlights documenting our travels — and there’s still a lifetime’s worth of backroads we haven’t covered yet.

No matter where we go, each drive gives me a deeper appreciation for the incredible range of landscapes in Southern California. And these journeys have led to many rewarding discoveries, from out-of-the-way diners to new trailheads for hiking and biking.

If you’re tired of visiting the same places, it’s time to hit the road. These two trips — all within a three-hour drive of the city — will get you started.

Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument This route traverses winding mountain roads through Los Padres and spits you out near the southern entrance to Carrizo Plain — a vast preserve of native grassland and a hotspot for wildflowers (at least on some years ) and birdwatching . From Interstate 5, take Exit 205 and head west on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This two-lane road changes names several times as it ascends into the San Emigdio Mountains, passing forested slopes and epic canyon views along the way.

After about 42 miles, you’ll meet California 166. Take a right here and then a left on Soda Lake Road to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument. Drive northwest for 35 miles to the parking lot for the Soda Lake Trail, a short boardwalk that gets you up close to the park’s salt-crusted lake. If you plan ahead, you can also book a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sandstone outcrop with Native American rock art.

Hungry? Head back the way you came, take a right on California 166, and drive west 15 miles to the Cuyama Buckhorn , a renovated ’50s motel, restaurant and bar. The eatery’s Santa Maria-style tri-tip is superb, and if you grab a room, you can turn this scenic drive into a full weekend escape .

Volcan Mountain and Julian This route will take you to Julian , a mountain town famous for its apple orchards and delicious pies. From Interstate 15, take Exit 58 for California 79. Take a right on Pechanga Parkway and head south. The road becomes Pala Temecula Road and emerges into a wide canyon with mountains towering on either side. Take a left at Pala Mission Road and continue east on California 76, which hugs the San Luis Rey River before ascending more than 1,000 feet up a chaparral-covered ridgeline.

After some hairpin turns, the road levels off and skirts Lake Henshaw, a picturesque reservoir. Take a right on California 79, and after 10 miles, take a left on Wynola Road. Follow that road for about 3.5 miles, then take a left on Farmer Road to arrive at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Stretch your legs on the Five Oaks Trail , a 1.2-mile path that ascends the western flank of Volcan Mountain and offers sweeping views of the orchards below.

With your appetite revved up, head south on Farmer Road into Julian and make a stop at the Julian Pie Co . Grab a well-deserved slice of apple pie and some apple cider and rest your feet at a picnic table while you chow down.

3 things to do

1. Race plankton in Manhattan Beach In celebration of Earth Day, the Roundhouse Aquarium will hold a day full of educational activities inside and outside its facilities. Highlights include dolphin spotting, a fish feeding, crafts, games, a “shark shack” and, yes, plankton racing. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go until 4 p.m. The event is free, but be sure to register ahead of time at roundhouseaquarium.org .

2. Go gardening in San Pedro Give back to the land by planting native species, removing weeds, mulching and watering the White Point Nature Preserve’s garden with the folks at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You’ll also have the chance to enter a raffle and take a guided nature walk. As a bonus, refreshments will be provided by Starbucks to keep you cool and hydrated. The three-hour event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. All volunteers under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event. Register at pvplc.com .

3. Stretch your legs on Venice Boulevard CicLAvia is back. And this time it’s shutting down a 5.75-mile stretch of Venice Boulevard that connects Palms, Mar Vista and Venice Beach for walkers, joggers, bikers, roller skaters, unicyclers, penny-farthings, pogo sticks — anything as long as it’s completely powered by humans. There will be three local hubs along the route where you’ll be able to partake in family-friendly activities, pump air into your bike’s tires, refill your water bottle and use the restroom. Be sure to reference CicLAvia’s digital map so you can scope out the local businesses you’d like to visit along the way. It all takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The must-read

The Klamath River in Northern California has turned brown and muddy, but that’s a good thing. As Times writer Ian James reports , it’s a side effect of the largest dam removal project in history, which aims to restore the river to its natural state. Four dams are being removed along the Klamath, and the river is passing freely through tunnels in three of them, draining reservoirs and churning up an estimated 2.3 million tons of sediment that had settled along the bottom of those man-made lakes. Although the turbid water might look ugly, restoration advocates and tribal leaders see it as a sign of healing. The muck is passing out of the Klamath, and new life — everything from salmon heading upstream to native plant seedlings along the riverbanks — will soon take its place.

5 Memorable “Off The Beaten Path” Side Trips on the Way to Glacier National Park

Memorable side trips, when on the road, are a special treat. So we are always on the lookout for that unique opportunity to jump off the main roads. Truly in the middle of nowhere, a vacation in Glacier National Park is usually a day long road trip through some of the most beautiful land in the country. Here are 5 side trips that are worth veering off the highway to find a little extra helping of adventure in Montana.

1. Jerry Johnson Hot Springs

If you have never experienced hot springs in their natural setting Jerry Johnson Hot Springs is a must stop! There is nothing quite like nestling into a hot spring between warm rocks and sand to relax your muscles and revive your spirit.

Actually in Idaho, just over the state line, Jerry Johnson is located about an hour west of Lolo, MT on Highway 12 in the Clearwater National Forest. It’s an easy 15 minute hike from the Warm Springs trailhead.

On weekends it can get crowded, but when we stopped mid-week there were only a dozen visitors spread out over a large area. We settled in at the second set of pools and pretty much had the space to ourselves for most of our stay.

These springs run along the crystal clear Warm Springs Creek which provides a great tool to control the temperature of your chosen soaking hole. Visitors can easily adjust the rocks around the pool to change the amount of creek water mix cooling the hot spring water.

Although I had been warned, I really wasn’t prepared for the clothing-optional rule. Sure enough as we headed back out we were greeted by a group embracing nature.

2. National Bison Range

Imagine the thrill of your car slowly rolling right through a herd of humongous bison. You can almost reach out your window and touch mothers with their new babies (but please don’t). This is the experience of cruising Red Sleep Mountain Drive in the National Bison Range near Dixon, MT.

Over a century ago, the National Bison Range was established by Theodore Roosevelt. Today this 2 hour cruise takes you right through the home of 350 freely roaming bison. Traffic was very light on the 19 mile one way trip when we visited. We were able to stop and watch wildlife for as long as we wanted. The few vehicles traveling along with us were gracious about pulling off to the side if they wanted a little more time for that perfect photo. We loved that this was so much calmer than Yellowstone, where the sight of a bison backs up cars for miles. Here, we were able to observe at our leisure.

Other wildlife share the refuge. We spent about 15 minutes watching a black bear casually work his way down a gully towards our car. As we neared the end of the drive, approaching Mission Creek, we saw a small herd of elk wading in the creek and a little further deer on the hillside.

Before you stop by, take a quick peek at their website. The primary viewing road, Red Sleep Mountain Drive, is a gravel road, gaining 2,000 feet in elevation with a 10% grade so there are vehicle limitations. Open hours vary with season and daylight, generally shutting down access 2 hours before closing to allow time for the trip.

This is a great side trip that almost guarantees up close wildlife viewing and well worth the small hop off the highway. More info at:  https://www.fws.gov/refuge/National_Bison_Range/

3. Garnet Ghost Town

Over a century ago, the mining town Garnet was home to over one thousand people. Abandoned as the mines were worked out, it is now one of the most intact ghost towns in Montana. According to the Garnet Preservation Association, families walked out leaving behind furniture and belongings as if they planned to come back.

In Garnet Ghost Town you are invited fully explore dozens of buildings including the general store, a hotel, and miner’s cabins. What makes this a special stop is that most buildings are wide open, not hidden behind ropes that limit access. And with only a couple hundred visitors a day, you can enjoy the story of the deserted town at your leisure.

As bonus to this side trip, the road to Garnet can be an adventure of its own. There are two roads in, and if you choose the path from I-90 you will love the experience. Most of it is dirt, occasionally one lane and with switchbacks that keep RVs at bay. The scenery is amazing and wildlife is abundant. More info at:  http://www.garnetghosttown.net/

4. Holland Lake Lodge

Following Rt. 83 North to Glacier National Park is a beautiful scenic drive through the Flathead National Forest. It is well worth the little bit of extra time it adds to your trip. Nestled into the forest are an assortment of cozy lodges. Holland Lake Lodge, near Condon, MT, is my husband’s favorite lunch stop.

The road to the lodge, through the pines and firs of the forest, is a calm respite from the long drive. Just around a curve is the main lodge, built in 1947. It would be worth just stopping for a drink to enjoy their cozy lobby. But lunch in the gorgeous dining room with windows overlooking Holland Lake is the reason to stop. Their on staff chef is amazing with a menu to rival any 5 star big city restaurant. Note they have limited serving hours so call ahead if you plan to arrive hungry.

5. Hungry Horse Reservoir

Just 15 miles from the entrance of Glacier National Park is a beautiful, heavily forested lake area in the Flathead National Forest. This gorgeous 34 mile long lake is held back by the 10th tallest dam in the US, Hungry Horse Dam. First stop is the dam itself for a walk across the dam and to wander through the visitor center.

Then continue your drive down West Side Road that follows the contours of the lake. There are many pull-offs, day use areas, and campgrounds where the casual visitor can stop to enjoy this water feature. The lake is a very active, used for swimming, boating, and fishing. If you have your kayaks along, pop them in for a couple hours and wander along the beautiful shoreline.

We had a great night camping near the shore and enjoyed an amazing sunset over the lake. Our camping neighbors raved about the nearby hikes into the National Forest.

And then the next day we were off to enjoy Glacier National Park.

Field Trip: Donna Dennis on the Lower East Side

THE DESTINATION Donna Dennis’ gallery show “Houses and Hotels” at O’Flaherty’s on the Lower East Side through Sunday, April 28 (sorry!)

THE JOURNEY Take the Z! (Or the J, but the Z is more fun.) Stop is Delancey-Essex, and don’t miss it or you are going over the Williamsburg Bridge. I had never been on the Z before and it goes more or less door-to-door (there’s a six block walk north on the other side) starting at City Hall (though I got on at Broad). It was so exciting that my pal and I had to take selfies. Plus there’s this really wonderful mural in the station.

THE DETAILS 44 Avenue A at East 3rd Street The show is four pieces in two rooms. Hours are: Wednesday to Friday, 11a to 6p Weekends 2 to 7p

FURTHER READING If you miss this show, go to The Ranch in Montauk , which on June 8 will be installing “Deep Station” (1981-1985), a recreation of a subway station that debuted at the Brooklyn Museum in 1987 and has not since been exhibited. But don’t ask me where exactly to see it — the website is really confusing. I think it may be either at a horse farm or at the dock… Maybe if you know, you know? I will update if I hear back from them.

PITSTOP There’s no end of the restaurants in the East Village, but for an easy stop in a very pretty setting for a decent dinner with very lovely staff, I would do upstairs Bar Primi, which we did last night before a theater show over that way. After the Dennis show, we walked to Eataly Soho. More on that later.

THE BACKGROUND So much background! First, I am a fan because of the PS 234 fence, which Dennis designed in 1988. (The panels were just restored as part of the school construction.) Second, she lived and worked on Duane for decades until 2019, when she was forced to take a buyout. (She bought a house upstate on 29 acres with a barn, and now lives and works there.) Over the years, she was also forced to become an activist for tenant rights and the Loft Law because the efforts to evict her were so fierce. And third, she is being celebrated as the “godmother of installation art” and “a trailblazer of the architectural sculpture movement” (New York Times) and these pieces are not easy to site, so get in there while you can.

These four pieces (she has 14 of these in total) have been sited before at dozens of places in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, including City Hall Park, Storm King and the Whitney. A Times story from decades ago described them as “Edward Hopper’s spaces made real” and that is such an apt description. The pieces are fascinating and captivating for their moody realism, their detail, and how they inhabit the past. As the gallerist at O’Flaherty’s, Jim Koenig, said to us when we visited, “She wouldn’t call herself a surrealist, but the show is surreal.”

The gallery is darkened and has piped-in cricket sounds, since the three pieces in the first room are lit for nighttime, making them all glowy and moody. And they are what I would think is about a 3/4 scale? Not dollhouses, but made just small enough to give you that squeal of excitement when you experience something mini. “The pieces were built to the scale for her studio on Duane — nothing could be taller than 12’6″” Koenig said, “but also for her working scale, physically, and the scale of memory. She was using memories of being a little girl and then travelling in her memory.”

Really, get over there if you can.

Here’s Dennis herself discussing this show: “The topics explored in my consciousness-raising group led me to think about my childhood and the forces and experiences that shaped me as a child. The false-front hotels had been fantasies of a sort. Now, I decided that my own experiences would be a source for my work. I remembered family road trips and the nightly ritual of looking for a place to stay. I was also looking closely at a book of Walker Evans photographs that I bought at the Museum of Modern Art. One photograph in particular, “Cottage at Ossining Camp,” caught my eye. I decided to make a work inspired by it. I went to Maine to look for tourist cabins like those I had stayed in as a child, cabins that I could photograph. Tourist Cabin Porch (Maine) is the result of one of those photos. The work is, in essence, a double false front: the front of the porch, the porch, and the front of the cabin, while the interior of the cabin is missing.”

And this from a 2019 Artnews piece about her loft on Duane: “Dennis and her neighbors have cooperated with volunteer organizations such as the Lower Manhattan Loft Tenants and the New York City Loft Tenants to resist landlords hoping to capitalize on the commercial and cultural value built by the artists. Dennis remembers testifying in a tenant suit against a former landlord in 1982. At the time, she was constructing her Masonite and metal installation Subway with Silver Girders (1981–82). When she arrived at the courthouse, she said, “I had sawdust in my eyelashes.” The judge ruled in favor of the building’s tenants, she recalled, then concluded the hearing “because Donna Dennis has to go to the Venice Biennale.”

And this from the most recent Times story about this show: “Exterior shots of her old studio on Duane Street, with its windows aglow from the city street at night, appear in ‘The Art of Metaphor,’ a convincing short film about Dennis by the filmmaker Kate Taverna that debuted in Montreal last month. Among its strengths is Dennis’s reading from the diary in her principled Midwestern voice. The film travels this month to Boston, then Berlin and Madrid. By 2018, among the last tenants, Dennis took her buyout and left, with her partner, for a neocolonial home and studio off the Hudson River, whose sloping grounds she compares to Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World.” As she leans into the brisk March wind, clad in black, one senses her plain dealing honesty without exchanging a word.”

Let's get rollin': Short train trip sparks desire for more rail adventures | Suzy Leonard

A good adventure requires four important things:

• An element of the unknown.
• The possibility of danger.
• The probability of fun.
• A pal who’s willing to take the risk.

With those ingredients in mind, recent Cocoa Beach transplant Ann Maloney and I set off early one Friday morning to catch the Brightline train to Miami.

I’ve been intrigued by Brightline for several years now, since the tracks started taking shape along the Beachline and U.S. 1. As a lifelong Southerner, passenger trains hold a certain mystery for me. Other than a couple of trips to Europe and a long-ago jaunt from New York City to Boston, trains have been little more than extras in the movie of my life.

A friend’s book event in Coral Gables offered the perfect opportunity to indulge my inner Sheldon Cooper.

I packed light the night before our trip, stuffing toiletries, makeup and a change of clothes into a backpack, and woke up several times during the night, worrying about traffic and where to park and lines for security. After all, does it count as an adventure if you sleep well before embarking?

Ann arrived a little before 6 a.m., her own backpack in tow, and we were off.

Traffic is light at that time of day, so we sailed along the Beachline in high spirits. When we arrived at the airport, Ann was an excellent co-pilot, directing me to Terminal C and into the giant parking deck, aka our first element of the unknown.

We had plenty of time, with 45 minutes until our train. We began creeping through the labyrinth of parking spaces. Panic set in as we wove our way higher and higher. The clock was ticking.

Finally, we inched up the ramp to the uncovered top of the deck and voila! We’d found parking nirvana and plenty of wide open spaces.

We hopped on the elevator and took it down to the fourth floor, where we looked for signs to the train station. We wandered about. We were down to 25 minutes before departure time. We sensed the possibility of danger. We were going to miss our train!

After some nervous pacing and a quick a check-in with Google, we discovered the skybridge to the station was on the fifth floor.

Another elevator ride and some directions from a kind airport employee later, and we were there with plenty of time to feed our backpacks into the luggage scanner and make two trips to the ladies’ room before boarding.

The train was clean and spacious with huge windows and plus-size restrooms.

We settled into our seats, ordered mimosas and watched the Florida scenery slip by.

In three and a half hours, we disembarked in Miami.

We were in SoFlo for about 26 hours, just enough time to enjoy lunch in Coconut Grove, drinks and the book talk in Coral Gables, plus a beachfront brunch and rooftop wine in Fort Lauderdale. (We made the trip from Coral Gables to Fort Lauderdale the old-fashioned way: A friend drove us.)

We were dropped off at the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station with seconds to spare, collapsing into our seats for the return trip as the train chugged out into the sunshine.

So how was our Brightline experience? Sure, there were a few minor glitches, and traveling from Rockledge to Orlando tacked an additional 90 minutes to our travel time, making it quicker to drive. It would help if the signage in the Orlando parking garage was more prominent. And while the all-in-one water and hand blow-dryer gadgets in the train restrooms were cool, it’s not easy to keep your hands centered under the water in a rocking train. It’s disconcerting to have the blow-dryer come on while your hands are still sudsy.

Overall, though, it was excellent.

“So civilized,” Ann said.

Would we do it again? Absolutely. I see many train adventures in our future.

Curragh Races: What is a fixture race and how does it differ from other races that same day?

Online info: What does 4.10 mean by the May 6th fixture race, "4.10 Coolmore Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes " is it the post time? If so, why isn't it listed as 16:10?

Celebrate student cultures and traditions at the 63rd International Street Fair

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience 40 countries in one day? Find out at the 63rd International Street Fair, hosted by the Council of International Student Organizations and Cranwell International Center .

On Sunday, April 21, from noon to 6 p.m., you can take a trip around the globe without leaving Blacksburg. Booths will be set up along one side of Alumni Mall, each hosted by an international or cultural student organization at Virginia Tech.

There, you'll have a chance to share in their culture, experiences, and traditional wear. Students also will offer presentations, crafts, games, and items for purchase.

The International Street Fair begins at noon with the Global Cultural Parade, an inclusive parade of celebrated cultures from around the would. It's followed by cultural performances throughout the day on the main stage in front of Torgersen Bridge, where students will share song, dance, and instrumental performances until the fair ends at 6 p.m.

There will be several international food trucks, where attendees will be able to buy a wide variety of sweet, savory, and spicy treats from all over the world.
