Uno-X Men’s Team to the 2023 Tour de France

06. FEBRUARY 2023

Uno-X Pro Cycling Team is invited to the Tour de France in 2023. A first in the history of sports! Never before has a Norwegian-Danish team competed in this iconic cycling race.

- We are extremely proud, humble, and grateful for the invitation. Tour de France is the ultimate dream, and just being a part of this is a victory for the team, says Jens Haugland, General Manager of Uno-X Pro Cycling Team

Haugland emphasises that the team is very ambitious.

- We will be well prepared for this year’s edition. Our long-term goal is to be able to fight for top positions in races like the Tour de France in the future. We see no reason to think that this isn’t possible, he continues.

We are extremely proud, humble, and grateful for the invitation. Tour de France is the ultimate dream, and just being a part of this is a victory for the team

Jens Haugland

General Manager i Uno-X Pro Cycling Team

On the lookout for a name partner

Tour de France is one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The three-week cycling happening is broadcasted to about 190 countries, and more than 150 million people follow it. Haugland points out that the exposure of Tour de France participation is enormous and proclaims that Uno-X is searching for a future partner that can help strengthening the project even more.

- We are looking for a partner with matching values and a willingness to go big; someone who shares our enthusiasm for cycling and sustainable mobility, says Haugland.

Uno-X Mobility has built Uno-X Pro Cycling Team from the ground up. The team was established in 2016, and today it comprises a women’s team, and men’s team, and a development team. The women’s team participated in the Tour de France Femmes in 2022 and will return to the event this year.

REITAN’s formula for success

Adhering to REITAN’s company philosophy, Uno-X has secured a strong market position in both Norway and Denmark. Simple and effective quality solutions is the base, also for the newly introduced concepts, ultrafast EV charging, and Nordic Swan ecolabelled car washers.

Uno-X Pro Cycling Team is developed, step by step, applying the same philosophy and value set as the other companies within Reitan Retail, informs Vegar Kulset, CEO of Uno-X Mobility.

- Parallel with our belief in doing things simple and efficient, we recognise the power and joys of dreaming big. Dreams do not always come true, but with our cycling ambassadors now going to the Tour de France – both the women and men – we showcase what   can  happen when we dare dreaming big  and combine it with long-term, hard work, he says.

Ole Robert Reitan, CEO of Reitan Retail, which Uno-X Mobility is a part of, says he looks forward to this year’s cycling season even more than he usually does.

- The way Uno-X Mobility has managed to develop a world class team that now will be competing in the Tour de France in 2023, for both men and women, impresses me. I look forward to the coming cycling season with enormous anticipation, says Ole Robert Reitan.

2022 Season Summary

2022 was not the greatest year to kickstart the team’s introduction to women’s racing as the final team to exploit a loophole and join the Women’s WorldTour without an intro season at the Continental level. Injuries were a big big problem and began to take their toll across the season. The team needed a big year from Susanne Andersen but she was struck down halfway through the classics after getting off to a good start in 2022. Mie Bjørndal Ottestad combined being run over by another team’s car post-race with a heavy crash in Scandinavia. The likes of Anne Dorthe Ysland also found the crash bug at the Battle of the North too. All in all, bad luck seemed to prevail when opportunities were there to do well.

Table of Contents

The team’s only victories in 2022 came in national championships – Anniina Ahtosalo becoming a double Finnish champion and Joss Lowden winning the British TT championship. The team struggled to score points and is in proper trouble when it comes to staying in the Women’s WorldTour after the 2023 season. A very Women’s WorldTour heavy calendar last year plays a big role in that, Anniina Ahtosalo being a good example. The young Finn bookended her season with strong finishes in Vuelta CV Feminas and Binche-Chimay-Binche, both 1.1 races which are ideal points-scoring and development opportunities.

Riders to Watch in 2023

If Susanne Andersen can get a full injury-free season in, she may be able to guide this team to qualify for a WWT spot next season. Now with a season’s experience in the books, Anniina Ahtosalo is going to be an exciting option provided we see her at the right races in 2023. A crash-free year for both of Mie Bjørndal Ottestad and Anne Dorthe Ysland would go a long way as well. Ottestad was 17th at the Tour de France Femmes which shows what might be possible at other climbing races as well. There have been glimpses from Anne Dorthe Ysland that there is a great talent about to break out. 6th at Binche-Chimay-Binche and 8th in the sprint on Stage 1 of the Women’s Tour matched what she did the year before and hint that there’s a big result coming.

Overall, Uno-X is quite a young team. The likes of Wilma Olausson, Rebecca Koerner, Hannah Ludwig and Amalie Lutro are all under 23 years old and can all put a quiet 2022 season behind them and really push on in 2023.

Transfer Thoughts

The signing of Maria Giulia Confalonieri does a lot to give Uno-X a chance of remaining in the WWT. The Italian can get good results just about anywhere and if the team is prepared to play the points game, she will be able to rinse the 1.1 type races as well as chipping in with some strong Women’s WorldTour race finishes too. Amalie Dideriksen could be a genuinely great signing but there are caveats that could sort themselves out as the season starts. The Dane will have Paris Olympics track duties this year but it also feels like lightyears since the former World Champion was a top sprinter in the women’s peloton. Part of that is down to riding for the 2 strongest teams in the women’s peloton with a strong pecking order. Last season Dideriksen was primarily working for Elisa Balsamo for instance. Things may come good with a clearer path to sprint chances this season.

Anoushka Koster is a fun rider to watch race and certainly gives the team something they didn’t necessarily have in 2022. Always ready to attack, her 7th in GC at the Tour of Scandinavia was nice to see with the major climb involved. Freed from assisting Marianne Vos in the Ardennes, Koster should be able to score some better results there than in the last 2 seasons. Between her and Confalonieri, Uno-X has some options there that were missing previously.

‘We’re Aiming for the WorldTour:’ Uno-X Mobility Team Boss

Uno-x’s journey has progressed to qualifying for the tour de france in 2023. now the norwegian team is knocking on the worldtour’s door..

In January 2023, Uno-X Mobility team boss Jens Haugland went out to pick up pizza. But before he could grab dinner, he got a phone call that would change his year.

It was Christian Prudhomme , the director of the Tour de France .

“You’re going to race the Tour de France,” Prudhomme told Haugland, the the head of UCI Pro Continental team comprised of Norwegian and Danish riders.

“I was just screaming — I put the phone next to me in the seat of the car,” Haugland says. “I just said thank you very much, sir. Now I’m going home to drink a bottle of champagne.”

uno x pro cycling team tour 2023

The team had hit the next level. “It’s overwhelming,” Haugland says of reaching the Tour, cycling’s top stage.

But despite the extra attention, the team handled the limelight with grace, and now has its eyes set on the next major goal.

“There’s no other way of putting it than saying that 2024 and 2025 are very critical years for Uno-X,” Haugland says. “We are aiming for that WorldTour license now.”

The UCI reevaluates the WorldTour teams every three seasons, regulating the bottom two teams in the WorldTour, and promoting two Pro Continental level squads to the top-level of cycling. Uno-X Mobility is about 2,000 points behind in the race but is optimistic it can earn enough points in the next two seasons to qualify for 2026 promotion.

“We are going for it,” Haugland says. “We are not hiding it.”

BTW, that's the even that I wholehartedly recommend, if you have any interest in military band music whatsoever.

Thanks all for the advice and clarification!

If we buy tickets for the Spasskaya Tower music festival is the program similar every night or are some nights better than others? We would have a choice of 1-3 Sept.

Correct but keep in mind that the sides of the square will be covered with seating/scaffolding all the time so the views might be not quite what you expected.

> I don't know if that refers to the whole square or just part of it?

Most of it.

> I would have liked to have visited Red Square at night but I guess that might not be possible?

It might be closed at night or maybe not. Anyway with all the scaffolding you will hardly make any iconic pictures in the square proper. But you can make nice pictures of St.Basil with the Kremlin as the background from Basil's Descent which is on the other side of St.Basil, next to the river.

> If we buy tickets for the Spasskaya Tower music festival is the program similar every night or are some nights better than others?

There are different bands from different countries performing every night, so obviously it's not the same.

PS I might be wrong re the last question: there are some indications that ALL participants perform every night, even though I find it hard to visualize 24 bands performing within two hours...

I've actually been at the event in question, and the each band's shows were quite short, in the 5-to-15 minutes range, so doesn't seem impossible — though there might've been less teams at the time.

Also, they don't scaffold the whole square, only the part between the Mausoleum and the Spassky gates, but there are a lot of other construction there as well, like vendor shacks, concession stands, manege for Cossack shows (Don, Kuban and Terek cossacks often perform there as well at the time) etc.

> they don't scaffold the whole square, only the part between the Mausoleum and the Spassky gates

But on both sides (the Kremlin side and the GUM side), right?

http://kremlin-military-tattoo.ru/upload/iblock/ac4/ac438223e6c34bae37814684d790ee90.jpg

> when I've been there, they were blocking the square's exits pretty solidly during performances

But do I get it right that the space behind St.Basil (Basil's Descent) is still accessible?

Uno-X Men’s Team to the 2023 Tour de France

Uno-X Pro Cycling Team is invited to the Tour de France in 2023. A first in the history of sports! Never before has a Norwegian-Danish team competed in this iconic cycling race.

“We are extremely proud, humble, and grateful for the invitation. Tour de France is the ultimate dream, and just being a part of this is a victory for the team,” says Jens Haugland, General Manager of Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.

Haugland emphasises that the team is very ambitious: “We will be well prepared for this year’s edition. Our long-term goal is to be able to fight for top positions in races like the Tour de France in the future. We see no reason to think that this isn’t possible,” he continues.

“We are looking for a partner with matching values and a willingness to go big; someone who shares our enthusiasm for cycling and sustainable mobility,” says Haugland.

“Parallel with our belief in doing things simple and efficient, we recognise the power and joys of dreaming big. Dreams do not always come true, but with our cycling ambassadors now going to the Tour de France – both the women and men – we showcase what can happen when we dare dreaming big and combine it with long-term, hard work,” he says.

Ole Robert Reitan, CEO of Reitan Retail, which Uno-X Mobility is a part of, says he looks forward to this year’s cycling season even more than he usually does.

“The way Uno-X Mobility has managed to develop a world class team that now will be competing in the Tour de France in 2023, for both men and women, impresses me. I look forward to the coming cycling season with enormous anticipation,” says Ole Robert Reitan.
