Where to get the Wandering Noble Ashes in Elden Ring

Ash items are summons, spells that allow you to summon helpful entities in combat. One of the starting items you can choose, for example, is the Fanged Imp Ashes, which summons two weak imps to poke and prod your enemies. One of these powerful summon items is the Wandering Noble Ashes, and here is where to get them in Elden Ring.

From the Church of Elleh, head north-west. You will discover a ramp heading down towards a door, which leads to an area known as the Stormfoot Catacombs. This area is a beginner-friendly dungeon, filled with Gargoyles that can throw daggers and leap down on you from the high ceilings. This area is fairly short but dangerous – and the Wandering Noble Ashes are hidden within.

The dungeon is straightforward — proceed through it until you reach the spewing fire tunnels. You will have to navigate past both of them to a safe zone, but make sure you time it properly. Without fire resistance or high health, you will die very quickly. You can stop and breathe immediately after reaching the second fire tunnel at the location in the above image — if you step forward too far, you will be hit by the second fire breath. Instead of sprinting to the fire source at the far end of the tunnel, head right and up the ladder.

You will now be on the third floor of the dungeon. Head straight, being mindful of hidden Gargoyles perched on walls. In the room ahead, you should see a tomb with a corpse slumped against it. This is where you can find the Wandering Noble Ashes, which summons five Noble Spirits to aid you in combat. From here, you can drop down one level to find the lever that opens the boss gate, and continue on your adventure.

Elden Ring summon spirits can see you call upon a wide range of computer-controlled allies to help in battle.

This is on top of the summons from past Souls games, which saw help from other players in multiplayer or an occasional character you meet on your journey.

Given how intimidating Elden Ring's toughest bosses are, with some you'll fight more than one foe at a time, spirit ashes can be vital tools to give you the upper hand.

While they are not usually powerful enough to defeat your foes for you, they're nonetheless handy as a vital distraction especially during a boss fight, which you can more reliably call upon than waiting for another player.

This guide will explain how Spirit Ashes work , how to use them and where to find the best ones throughout the Lands Between.

Spirits range from enemy types you'll encounter during your time in the Lands Between to unique spirits of once legendary heroes, as well as some who will be summoned as a group.

In order to use Spirit Ashes, you first need the Spirit Calling Bell. You can unlock this early on after you've visited the Church of Elleh near the starting area. Once you've unlocked your horse , the ability to level up and fast travel to the Roundtable Hold, return to the Church of Elleh and you should encounter a new character - in our case it was during nighttime and the area is surrounded in mist.

Speak to the witch and she will give you the Spirit Calling Bell, as well as the Lone Wolf ashes to get you started. If you miss her for any reason, it will also be possible to buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold.

You won't actually use the bell itself, instead equip the Spirit Ash that you want to use in your quick items list. Be aware that you can only summon spirits in certain areas, which will be indicated by a small tombstone icon that appears above your equipment UI. This is also where the spirit's HP will be displayed once summoned.

You can only summon one spirit at a time and none at all if you are summoning another player. Spirits also cost FP to summon, the more FP it costs should give you an indication of their effectiveness. However you'll also find that some of the strongest and spirits cost more than your starting maximum FP, so if you want to use the game's most powerful spirits then ensure you level up your Mind stat.

Just as with weapons, you can also upgrade Spirit Ashes, which will be indicated by a number to their name (e.g. +1, +2, and so on). This is done via Spirit Tuning although you'll need to speak to the right people to unlock it.

The spirit tuner in question is Roderika, a young woman you can speak to at the Roundtable Hold. When you first speak to her however, she doesn't have a role. You'll have to speak to the blacksmith Hewg who will sort of take her under his wing if you follow the dialogue options.

Once you've persuaded Hewg to help her out, the next time you visit the Roundtable Hold, Roderika will be sitting across from the blacksmith having set up her own stall as a Spirit Tuner.

Besides runes, in order to upgrade spirit ashes, you will also need bolstering materials called Gloveworts. These plants come in two varieties: Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort, while they also have a different number to indicate its strength like Smithing Stones (e.g. Ghost Glovewort [3]). Ghost Gloveworts are required to level up special ashes, but in either case you only need one material to do the job.

These materials can be hard to come by, but are usually found when exploring catacombs in the world. You'll also eventually be able to purchase gloverworts from the Twin Maiden Husks, provided you find the relevant bell bearings and give it to them.

With so many spirit ashes in the Lands Between - and only the ability to summon one at any time - it's best to focus on the best summons and focusing on getting them first.

This can vary depending on the situation. While some can feel very disposable, we found that spirits who are summoned as a group, which can vary from two to five, are ideal when you need as many distractions as possible, and, even if they do not deal significant damage, their attacks may be enough to interrupt an enemy.

That said, some are clearly better than others. The best summons in Elden Ring in descending order are:

5. Omenkiller Rollo

Like Oleg but far more aggressive with dual wielding cleavers, Rollo goes for the enemy and can knock them down and continue stomping them. He's one of the most powerful spirits you can summon.

It's only a tough choice picking him as not only is he only available fairly late into the game but his FP cost is much higher compared to Oleg's.

4. Greatshield Soldier Ashes

The best of the soldier ashes you can find, although you'll likely need to level up a bit of the mind attribute to use them first. There are not only five of them but they all have a greatshield, meaning they can make for a very good tanky distraction, especially if you need more distractions when fighting a boss duo. They can however be vulnerable to powerful AOE attacks especially as they have a tendency to stick together.

3. Lhutel the Headless Ash

Another special spirit you can acquire early on, Lhutel is incredibly tanky with her great shield making her invaluable against tough bosses. The added bonus is that her lance isn't just for close-quarters, she can also hurl it at a distance.

2. Banished Knight Oleg

With his powerful dual-wielding swords, Oleg cuts through enemies and can stand up to tough bosses as a good tank with high poise. It's possible to unlock him right at the start, although that does require getting through one of the trickier catacombs and a very tough boss that's not recommended for low-level players. His FP cost also means you need to put points into mind before you can use him, but compared to all the other special ashes, his is still the most cost-effective

1. Mimic Tear

Undoubtedly the best summon in Elden Ring , you can have in the game because you're essentially getting a clone of yourself to fight alongside you. And if you level it up with Ghost Gloveworts, it's basically a super tanky version of you that will survive several powerful attacks that would normally one-shot your own character. That it costs HP rather than FP also means you can make use of it without investing in mind attribute points. You can find where to get this with our Mimic Tear location explainer.

Below you'll find a selection of the best Spirit Ashe summons, along with their locations. Since this is a huge game with untold secrets, this list isn't exhaustive - but should give you some ideas of useful summons to find throughout the game to suit any situation.

Lone wolf ashes location

FP cost: 55

Despite the name, you'll actually get three lone wolves to fight for you. Their agility makes them great for attacking quickly and sometimes interrupting enemy attacks.

These are the first spirit ashes you'll likely find as you'll be given it by the witch when you first receive the Spirit Ringing Bell at the Church of Elleh.

Wandering noble ashes location

FP cost: 28

Very much just disposable grunts, but there's five of them so they'll at least make decent bait.

You can find these spirit ashes in Stormfront Catacombs down by the lower part of Limgrave before you head up to Stormhill. You'll find them inside a coffin inside the catacombs.

Noble sorcerer ashes location

FP cost: 11

Unfortunately a waste of your time as this sorcerer's spells are very pithy, but then it's also the cheapest spirit ash to summon.

His spirit ashes are also in Stormfront Catacombs, and your reward for defeating the boss inside, an Erdtree Burial Watchdog .

Putrid corpse ashes location

FP cost: 40

Four fairly weak but decent enemy bait.

Their ashes can be found as a reward for defeating the Frenzied Duelist at the bottom of Gaol Cave, located in Southwest of Caelid. You'll need to wade through a toxic swamp that will inflict scarlet rot on you (though Torrent can ride through it just fine) and make sure you have swordstone keys to open the way.

Skeletal militiaman ashes location

FP cost: 44

These two spear-wielding skeletons literally put up more of a fight, because they keep coming back after death until they're properly finished off when they've collapsed.

Getting these ashes involves a pretty fun mini boss fight with a Tibia Mariner , a spectral skeleton who fights you on its dinghy (no, really), although he can also summon other skeleton buddies to help. You'll find his location in the flooded Summonwater Village just east of Limgrave.

Skeletal bandit ashes location

FP cost: 22

As with the skeletal militiamen, the skeletal bandit also keeps getting back up until it's properly finished off when down. Its twin blades should make it fearsome, although there's only one of them.

As with this Spirit Ash , it's also rewarded by defeating another Tibia Mariner, who you can find if you follow the right path northwards when you first enter Liurnia and continue on its highway towards Artist's Shack. Surprisingly enough, the spectral boatman isn't fighting in a body of water this time but in the woods.

Winged misbegotten ashes location

FP cost: 37

These flying enemies can be annoying to fight normally, so it's only right that they be a nuisance to bosses too when you have one you can summon.

These ashes can be found in Unsightly Catacombs, which is located northwest of the secret path that takes you up to Altus Plateau after you've defeated the Magma Wyrm. You'll need swordstone keys to open the path to the catacombs.

You'll need to navigate the catacombs to find a lever to open a door to the boss, but en route, you'll come to a dark stairway with a pit at the bottom. Drop down and you'll find the ashes there.

Demi-human ashes location

FP cost: 69

These small but feral enemies attack as a group of five, making them great against going against other groups or to keep a tough boss at bay, and even better if you keep them levelled up.

You'll find their Spirit Ashes by defeating another Erdtree Burial Watchdog mini-boss inside Impaler's Catacombs northeast of Weeping Peninsula. You'll need to head up to higher ground where Oridys's Rise is, but then follow the outer perimeter which will take you to the entrance behind.

Rotten stray ashes location

Much more violent than the lone wolves, though there's only one that's summoned, but still a quick and nimble creature for distracting enemies.

While this is in Caelid, you can find this one early on if you get teleported to Sellia Crystal Mines from the chest in Dragonburnt Ruins (a quick way to reach our recommended early rune farming spot ). When you've reached Sellia, the town of sorcery, south of it is the Sellia Under-Stair Site of Grace, which then leads to a swamp that will inflict you with scarlet rot. Not far off there is a rotten stray's corpse where you'll be able to collect its spirit ashes.

Giant rat ashes location

The only spirit that's free to summon, though their effectiveness is debatable. Nonetheless, if you level them up, even more rats will come along!

You'll need to head to the West Windmill Pasture, which is located west of Windmill Village in the north of Altus Plateau. Approach the stables next to the windmill and you'll see a swarm of rats, including a much larger one inside. Kill them and then grab the spirit ashes.

Spirit jellyfish ashes location

Spirit jellyfish aren't generally a threat as enemies, so you may question whether this one is any use summoning, although she illuminates surroundings and spews poison. In any case, getting these Spirit Ashes is no trouble since they're a gift from Roderika. Just talk to her after she's opened her spirit-tuning shop.

Fanged imp ashes location

FP cost: 50

Imps can be a nuisance when you're exploring catacombs and these ashes will summon two of them. They'll move fast to cause a distraction and also hurl magic pots at enemies.

These ashes are sold by one of the isolated merchants. The one you're looking for is just outside of Raya Lucaria Academy's gates. From the Main Academy Gate Site of Grace, head southeast past the teleporting seal and follow the path. You'll encounter wolves, but you can ride past them to where you'll find the merchant selling the ashes for 2000 runes.

Greatshield soldier ashes location

FP cost: 74

Probably one of the best group spirits you can summon, as not only do you get five soldiers, but they all carry greatshields - , the ultimate tank distraction. Let them absorb a boss's attacks and wrath while you get around to get in some free hits.

Getting these ashes, however, requires defeating Radhan, which is a very tough fight early on. But once you do beat him, a star crashes down onto the map and creates an opening to Nokron, the eternal city. The entrance to this underground area is south of the Mistwood in Limgrave.

Once you're in Nokron, there's an illuminated path you can head down but don't go just yet. Instead go to the right of it where you'll find a graveyard, and some enemies waiting. Kill them and head to the right corner where you'll find the ashes amongst the graves.

Ancestral follower ashes location

FP cost: 86

If you've been down to Siofra River Well Depths, then you'll have come across these imposing horned folk who are effective with heavy clubs as well as bows, although this spirit specializes with the latter.

The ashes are also located in Siofra, though it requires a few steps. When you reach the river bank, you'll notice a number of stone monuments that can be lit at the base, as pictured.

There's eight in this area that will need to be lit, which will also light a flame on one of the torches leading up some stone steps, which leads to the Hallowhorn Grounds.

We've marked the locations of the eight monument torches you need to light below, and they're all spread out, from the Siofra River Bank in the south to north of Worshippers' Woods.

You'll get a message once you've lit all the torches. Return to the Hallowhorn Grounds in the southeast and you'll notice the skeleton of the stag at the end glowing. Touch it and you'll be transported to another area where you'll fight the Ancestor Spirit. It can be tricky to hit as it sort of floats in the air and can leap and also teleport but defeat it and the ashes will be yours.

Raya Lucaria soldier ashes location

FP cost: 59

These ashes consist of three soldiers, two acting as grunts and one as their leader who can also dish out spells. A decent summon, though you'll find better ones later on, such as the Greatshield soldier ashes.

These ashes are located in Road's End Catacombs southwest of Liurnia, not far from the area's Minor Erdtree and off the path from Converted Tower. You'll find the ashes in front of a stone coffin as you explore the catacombs.

Glintstone sorcerer ashes location

FP cost: 49

A step up from the noble sorcerer, this Raya Lucaria sorcerer is protected by their stone crown and wields Glinstone Stars sorcery.

Their ashes can also be found in Road's End Catacombs by defeating the mini-boss, a sneaky thing known as a Spirit Caller Snail, which summons one of the game's dreaded enemies,- a Crucible Knight.

While you can defeat the knight, that won't hurt the snail itself, who is hiding in the boss room somewhere, though it should materialize once you take down the knight. Try to finish it before it disappears again though as it will summon another knight in its place.

Twinsage sorcerer ashes location

FP cost: 89

This spirit is an even more powerful sorcerer who unleashes Glintstone Cometshard and Crystal Burst sorceries, though it'll cost you a lot more to summon.

You'll find it by heading to the most northeast part of Liurnia in Black Knife Catacombs. You'll need to defeat a Cemetery Shade inside, which can be intimidating, though summoning in spirits to help goes a long way.

Godrick soldier ashes location

FP cost: 54

Spirits you can find early, this hammer and crossbow duo are a decent choice to help out, even if you might have better options later. In any case, you'll definitely have the FP to summon them and they'll still be a viable aid if you level them up accordingly.

Their ashes can be found just southwest of Stormhill Shack. Instead of following the route to the castle, head back down and you'll see some woodland, which you can reach by traveling to the far end. You'll also run into some spirit jellyfish who are largely harmless, so just move past them and run back over to the grave spot east of the wood to where the ashes are.

Leyndell soldier ashes location

FP cost: 64

These are very capable tanks with spears and greatshields, though once you find the Greatshield soldier ashes, they're less exciting as they're just two compared to the latter's five.

Their ashes can be found in Sainted Hero's Cave in Altus Plateau, just west of Rampartside Path, which can be reached after you've gone through the Capital Outskirts and come out of its northwestern gate.

Like most caves, there's a maze-like puzzle to solve, and you'll find these ashes along the way. Specifically, you'll come to a point where you are above a room you've come to before with a light shining in the centre, which is to expose the other invulnerable shaded enemies you face there. But before you return there, drop to the left of this upper platform and you'll come across a corpse where the ashes are located.

Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff ashes location

FP cost: 108

A legendary spirit who's not only armed with a huge shield, but also strikes thunderbolts are enemies. A sturdy tank though you'll need to increase your FP before you can summon.

His ashes are the reward for defeating the boss in Sainted Hero's Cave, Ancient Hero Zamor, a formidable opponent who can inflict the Frostbite status with his attacks.

Stormhawk Deenh ashes location

FP cost: 47

Of all the special ashes, this one costs the least FP to summon; it also can buff you with its cries and fly around while unleashing wind attacks.

Stormhawk Deenh's ashes can be found in the Chapel of Anticipation, located on an island near Stormveil Castle. But how do you reach that place?

First, you'll need to head to the Four Belfries up on the west side of Liurnia overlooking Raya Lucaria Academy. You'll find three teleports, but each needs a special Imbued Swordstone Key to unlock. Fortunately, one of these is in a chest at the top of this area by the Site of Grace.

But if you only have one Imbued Swordstone Key, then go and use it on the teleport where you are facing north. This teleport will take you to the Chapel of Anticipation where you'll have to fight a mini-boss. After you've defeated it, follow the path towards the chapel, but look for an entrance on the right that will take you upstairs and to a chest containing the ashes.

Banished Knight Oleg ashes location

FP cost: 100

One of the earliest special ashes you can unlock, Oleg is a beast of a warrior who wields a blade in each hand and attacks aggressively withstanding most enemy attacks for a good while. A brilliant tank and worth increasing your Mind stat for.

Of course, while it's possible to get Oleg at the beginning, that depends on whether you can survive the deathtraps of the Fringefolk Hero's Cave, which also requires two swordstone keys to access. Defeat the equally formidable Ulcerated Tree Spirit waiting at the end and you'll be rewarded with the ashes, as well as a Golden Seed for increasing the amount of your flask charges.

Latenna the Albinauric ashes location

A magic archer, who also has one of the most interesting questlines which will get you to one of Elden Ring's secret areas, Latenna is described as someone who chose to become a spirit voluntarily. While her bow can be powerful, the downside is that she can't move from the place she's been summoned, which makes her a bit like a turret.

You'll find Latenna by exploring the Lakeside Crystal Cave south of the lake in Liurnia. Instead of taking the teleport out at the end of the mini boss, look for another path forward, which will take you to Slumbering Wolf's Shack where you'll find her seated by her wolf companion, Lobo. However, if you speak to her now, not much will happen, though she'll mention she doesn't know anything about a certain medallion.

To get her to cooperate, you'll need to initiate her questline by going to the Village of the Albinaurics. From that Site of Grace, head east up along the village until you come to a large pot. It stands out as it doesn't resemble the other jar people you may have encountered and it's set aside from the other objects nearby. Hit it with your sword and you'll discover an old man inside.

Speak to him and he'll give you one half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. Now return to Latenna and show her this and she'll not only tell you where to find the other half but also join you, allowing you to summon her spirit.

Perfumer Tricia ashes location

FP cost: 78

Perfumer Tricia attacks by throwing an arc of dust that bursts into flames moments later. She's not all offence, however, as she also knows magic;, applying a defensive shield for her and yourself when first summoned.

She is one of the rare spirits whose ashes are found by defeating her. You can find her in Unsightly Catacombs -, the same place where you found the Winged misbegotten ashes. To make it all the more obvious, those catacombs are next to a place called Perfumer's Ruins.

Omenkiller Rollo ashes location

As the name suggests, Rollo is a beast. He's like Oleg on steroids wielding even bigger swords and attacks with ferocity, jumping and stamping at his foes. That also however means it'll cost more FP to summon him, so make sure you're increasing your Mind.

His ashes are obtained on your way to the Divine Tower of East Altus, which you can reach by not taking the lift up to Forbidden Lands but continuing along the path. You'll see the tower in front but, the moment you step out, you'll be cast into a pitch black space. Dark Souls players might get a similar vibe as the Four Kings, though fortunately here you only have to fight two Fell Twins, and, of course, you can also summon a spirit to help you out.

Defeat these two and you'll return back to in front of the Divine Tower and also be awarded Rollo's ashes.

Lhutel the Headless ashes location

FP cost: 104

Located in Weeping Peninsula, Lhutel is one of the very first special ashes you can access, though her FP cost means you'll be unlikely to use her straight away. The headless knight is, however, a very powerful spirit ally, with a greatshield for tanking, while also being able to hurl spectral lances.

Her ashes are inside Tombsward Catacombs, which can be tricky to find. If you're starting from the Tombsward Site of Grace further down the cliff, go north, staying close to the cliffside until you can head up, then turn back around and head south until you reach a statue, which will illuminate the path when you interact with it. It will point to the rockface ahead of you where two spirit jellyfish are floating around, but go closer and you'll find the door to the catacombs tucked away.

Once inside, you'll need to solve the puzzle to activate a lever to open the door to the boss room where you'll fight a Cemetery Shade. Kill it and Lhutel's ashes are yours.

Depraved Perfumer Carmaan ashes location

FP cost: 124

Carmaan is one of the most powerful perfumers you can summon, fighting with a blade and with magic, but, with the highest FP cost of any other spirit, you'll need to think carefully about whether you'll want to invest in your Mind to make use of him.

Finding his ashes involves beginning the Volcano Manor questline. You'll find the manor near the top of Mt. Gelmir west of Altus Plateau. Once inside you'll meet Lady Tanith who sits in a corner of the main room with an intimidating-looking knight at her side. Speak to her and agree to join the manor's cause and she'll give you the Drawing-Room Key to open the doors on the hallway to the right.

You'll, however, notice that one door is bolted shut. Check the room opposite it and you'll find there's a secret passage behind a fake wall in the right corner. This passage will lead you all the way around the manor's perimeter and into the locked room where you'll find a corpse with Carmaan's ashes.

Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell. Use to summon the spirits of five wandering nobles. The spirits of nobles who, after death, now wander the Lands Between. Surely they were in search of something once - but whatever it was has long been forgotten.

This summon will offer any Tarnished a few benefits when called into battle. Aside from the obvious distraction that a summon can offer for your enemies, this particular summon comes with the following traits and abilities:

The Wandering Nobles Ashes will spawn five companions walking slowly together. This is usually great for bosses that move fast. So, you can distract them by spawning these five fighters and then attacking them from behind with a special attack.

Now, let's see how you can get the Wandering Nobles Ashes.

This item is located inside the Stormfoot Catacombs in Limgrave. Hopefully, you don't need to beat a boss to get the Wandering Nobles, but it's been hidden pretty well inside the catacombs.

Once you enter the Stormfoot Catacombs, go past the Site of Grace and then turn right. Go straightforward until you reach a door and then take a left. Continue the path straight in the big hall and go through the narrow passage. Now turn right and then turn right again. Before you reach the end of the hallway, there is a ladder at your right. Go up and continue the way straight until you reach a dead-end. On your left, there is an item. Pick it up, and you will get the Wandering Nobles Ashes. (Thank you, LethalLeslie !)

Using Wandering Nobles will consume 28 FP, which is not huge compared to other powerful Ashes.

Noble's Slender Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring . Noble's Slender Sword scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity , and is a good Weapon for Dexterity builds. It is one of the longest Straight Swords in Elden Ring .

Narrow blade carried by wandering nobles. Made to be easy to wield.

Daubed with gold from tip to tail, it should fetch a good sum.

Where to Find Noble's Slender Sword in Elden Ring

Can be farmed from the group of Wandering Nobles among the Troll -pulled Carriage's caravan to the west of Waypoint Ruins , north of Agheel Lake South Site of Grace. [ Map link ]
Can be farmed from the large group of nobles that appear to the north of the Debate Parlor Site of Grace in Raya Lucaria Academy . Leave the boss room and go up the stairs into a large courtyard. To the left there are two nobles picking weeds, and many more up the stairs near them, in front of two Glintstone Sorcerers . Each Wandering Noble has a chance to drop the sword.
Dropped by Wandering Nobles in Caelid , in the graveyard directly south of the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace.
Go to the Church of Pilgrimage site of grace and move down the road leading to the church. There's a noble with this sword amongthe other nobles that can be farmed.

Noble's Slender Sword Notes & Tips

Weapon Skill : Square Off
This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War and buffed with Magic and Consumables .
Noble's Slender Sword can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones .

Base drop rate is 0.5% (at 100 Discovery ).
NOTE: As of Patch 1.08 , Straight Swords poise damage has been reduced only on PVP .
NOTE: As of Patch 1.09 , the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the running attack speed, first attack speed and speed of guard counter of straight sword has increased. The attack recovery time has also decreased.

The best place to farm early is from the Mistwood Outskirts sight of grace. One of the three nobles on the road near the bridge has this sword. Running back and forth killing all of the nobles and resetting at the grace will take almost exactly thirty seconds. I've gotten this sword about five times on different runs. I use this group of nobles because it is by far the simplest IMHO. My most recent run was exceedingly good luck. Third time was the charm. It should take - on average - about 180 runs at 110 discovery. That is an hour and a half. At low levels the xp can get you a couple of levels and you'll get a bunch of the simplest crafting ingredients.

i just got on ER to grind for the dlc and the 5th noble i killed gave me it. I HAVE 116 DISCOVERY. WTH

I think Caelid Highway is the best for farming this. Because most of them wielded this weapon.

Farming for this thing is straight up blasphemy

I prefer the Caelid graveyard farming spot, had better luck there, riding Torrent is better than tediously running and felt faster, plus no annoying enemies around and discovered a larval tear that I otherwise would have missed.

Already have it, took me ten minutes and three silver feet to get by farming three nobles outside schoolhouse classroom grace, i'm considering switching my lordsworn sts for this one purely for fashion and reach, str sword and board build, heavy afinnity, numbers wise is it gud

By far the best farming spot is the one in Raya Lucaria. Did 20 Runs with the Limgrave-Carriage, no drops. Did 7 runs in Raya lucaria, got 2 drops

Do the nobles in the cave of learning also drop these? Might be the best farming location if that's true. For me at least they never dropped it.

I got 4 Noble's Estoc killing the whole group of mobs at the carriage west of the Waypoint Ruins Cellar grace in Limgrave, before getting the Noble's Slender Sword to drop (at 193 discovery and 18 arcane). I also got multiple copies of the Old Aristocrat and Aristocrat and Kaiden sets too, which is nice, but now I am no longer sane, lol.

Farmed the Debate Parlor grace for maybe 45 to an hour. I'm at 50arc, silver scarab talisman, and popped the silver foul foot when it timed out. I was hoping to get 2 of them and luckily got 2. Used Mohgwyns blood spear to just kill then entire group, including those annoying ass mages. Now I'm trying to find a good powerstance build for them. They look awesome and the pwerstance straightsword movement is pretty cool. Should I go frost or flame art? Stats don't matter I'm at soft cap for everyone.

Decided I wanted to use this weapon, fast travelled to the Way point Ruins grace, found the convoy with the sword wielding nobles... Got the sword from the 2nd noble I killed. After reading stories of many people spending hours and getting nothing but rowa fruits... I am so grateful to the RNG gods lol

It is very important that the mob from which you farm this sword (like any other weapon with a random drop chance) is in the mob's hands.

Been using this golden toothpick for my entire run, whilst I hate how thin it is. I gotta say, with square off and a bit of elbow grease. Nothing has stood in my way for long. As someone who used lightning on this thing for a bit. I highly suggest going straight keen with the dex crystal tear. Been considering switching to the broadsword as it's thicker and supposedly scales better, let me know if that's true, albeit. I don't know if I will like the lack of range.

First playthrough took me over 160 hours. Never had this sword drop for me. Started a second playthrough to get ready for DLC and one dropped within the first three hours and I had two before leaving Limgrave. It really do just be like that sometimes.

Started a new game, wretch lvl 1, Farmed for 2 hours yesterday without succes, now level 30, gave up on farming and moved on to weeping peninsula, killed the nobles between the minor erdtree and the northern most church on the way. It dropped then and there, just like that. Drops feel weird sometimes

The best straight sword for an astrologer build. It can be used with starting stats, it scales well with int as magic affinity and 110 critical for those glintblade phalanx aow stance breaks.

I used this sword as my main weapon in my first playthrough and took hours farming for it. Just started a new game with no intention to use this sword for this character and the first time I fight the group of nobles behind the troll caravan I get the sword.

Could be a case of extreme luck but dropped on the first try, twice on two different new characters, from the nobles at the cemetery northwest of Fort Gael.

Has high dex scaling when infused with cold where as lordsworn does not.

Lots of people say that the Lordsworn SS is the new Lothric SS, but it’s definitely this sword. Long reach, 110 crit multiplier, and high dex scaling which are all shared by the Lothric SS.

People are farming for this weapon because of the high DEX Scaling right? Just making sure.

Update for September 23rd, 2023: I farmed up three of these on my newest character. I've been co-oping with a friend brand new to the game and the genre and he needs a lot of help. But every time he summons me we get invaded by some ****less basement dwelling twink that has max Sacred Flasks, infinite Star Shards and super cancerous weapon / ash combos (just had a dual whip with scarlet rot guy invade us at level 15 yesterday). My solution has been this beautiful little sword, the Noble's Slender Sword and the Brass Shield. They're both farmable and the set looks good together. The reason I farmed three of each is to fool these invaders. I have Hoarfrost Stomp on one, Flame Strike on one and Impaling Thrust on one. My three Brass Shields have No Skill, Parry and Shield Bash. I can hotspot between NSS and Brass Shields mid-combat and constantly come out with new Ashes of War that seem to confound the window licking invaders trying to grief us. 1) Invader comes in, I parry an attack, Hoarfrost out. 2) I hot-swap to No Skill and an Impaling thrust 3) I bait with a charged R2, they roll and I catch them with an Impaling Thrust for the rest of their health. Noble's Slender sword is particularly great for this because of the reach. It's easier to roll catch and it makes Impaling Thrust practically spear length. Now there are a ton of farming locations - Limgrave Caravan, Rya Lucaria Academy, Church of Vows and Caelid Highway South. Which is the best? It's absolutely, 100% Schoolhouse Classroom. There are three Wandering Nobles right outside the site of grace. All three wield, and drop, NSS. They SEEM to have a significantly increased drop rate. With ~250 discovery, I can reliably drop one sword every eight resets or so. Or, about 4%. I've now farmed almost ten of these here. In Limgrave I have never gotten a drop. Church of Vows is also excellent because there are THREE NSS wielding Wandering Nobles patrolling just south along the road. It's an easy ride on Torrent to murder them, loot, ride back, rest and reset. You can get 7-8 clears on a Silver Fowl's Foot. But honestly, School House Classroom is busted. Those guys have an exceptionally buffed drop rate.

Why did I get this from going about my day and stopping to whip the elderly

Found a good farming spot. Right down the road from the turtle pope site of grace. There is a group of 5. 3 of them are holding the sword. Mount up ride to then and 3 swipes of a greatsword, loot and respawn or run back. Each run takes about 20 seconds. Got the first sword in 10 minutes got a second sword 5 minutes after. Base arcane and wearing the silver bug talisman.

Anybody think taht this weapons with heavy infusion and the AOW rock thing is viable for a sword and shield build ?

i find that making a 99 arcane build does indeed help, i recomend using talismans to be able to use relic sword, but keeping the silver scarab talisman, or if you want to use incants get the dragon communion seal, its nuts on 99 arcane

It’s good but only shines over the other straightswords if you can really take full advantage of the extra reach. If you aren’t hitting people with the very edge of the model you’d probably just get better results with the AR + posture breaks of the Broadsword. A good idea might be powerstancing with a Noble Sword in your right hand for a good long thrusting r2 and a broadsword in your left hand for a good AR stick to make up for the slender sword’s somewhat lacking base damage. The vanilla longsword is definitely viable but I think its sort of the worst of both worlds in that it doesn’t quite have the sexy AR of the broadsword but also lacks the good reach that lets you be obnoxious like with this.

Elden Ring isn't the first time a series has pivoted to open world

These games took a chance on open design after more walled-in beginnings.

While previous Soulsborne games have been like 3D spiderwebs full of shortcuts and connections unlocked through careful exploration, Elden Ring is an open world of the "you can go anywhere" variety. It's a risky shift for a studio famous for games with intricate level design.

Open worlds go way back, through the likes of Elite and every RPG with an overworld map to the earliest text adventures. But the modern idea of what an open world can be was codified by the success of Grand Theft Auto 3, which made marketing departments see dollar signs in phrases like "living, breathing world" and "you can go anywhere".

GTA3's reactive world, the systems that were just complex enough to encourage emergent gameplay, the collectible hunting and the strict delineation between story and side missions—all became codified into a formula that could be applied to other games and other genres.

Ubisoft are the masters of this, refining that formula by adding maps that fill with points of interest each time you reach a vantage point, outposts to liberate, and a proliferation of other repeatable activities copy-pasted in different locations. At its worst, these games become pure icon-chasing, moving from one question mark to the next where the answer to that question is usually "a sidequest that's just like the last one."

Yet there are still games that pull it off, that find novel ways to expand without diluting themselves. The following series all embiggened themselves partway through, and each is an example of the potential payoffs and pitfalls.

The Witcher

See these fields? All this used to be a sequence of connected hub areas.

The first two Witcher RPGs were nonlinear and had branching stories, but The Witcher 3 went fully, expansively, open world, and made a success of it. Whichever direction you go, it feels like you find sidequests as rich as the main storyline. The one with the baby in the oven, or the monster-filled manor, or the talking pig, or a dozen others.

The funny thing is, The Witcher 3's map also contains plenty of recycled monster nests, smuggler's caches, and other activities ripped direct from the Ubisoft template. It's just that there are enough memorable sidequests around them to make us forget all that stuff. While Elden Ring isn't going to have the luxury of having Geralt face a new moral quandary every 10 minutes to keep things interesting, if its side dungeons turn out a bit bland but then every one has a killer boss fight at the end, players will probably forget and forgive. – Jody Macgregor, Weekend/AU Editor

Batman: Arkham

It's practically cliché these days among games journalists to say you preferred the original Arkham Asylum to its later open world sequels. But I think it's undeniable that, for all the series gained from going open world, it lost a lot of its focus and sense of place.

That first game is, essentially, a metroidvania, and as with most games in that genre, the need to return to old areas and explore every nook and cranny as you gain new abilities really leads you to become intimately familiar with the space. If you'll permit me another cliché: the Asylum is like a character itself, one you get to know just as well as Batman or the Joker.

I don't think the same is true of Gotham in the sequel, Arkham City. To achieve open world scale, it needs a certain amount of filler—generic buildings and streets, which exist largely just to be glided over. As you travel, icons and side activities constantly fight for your attention—a far cry from the singular forward (and sometimes backward) momentum of Asylum.

Of course, with that increase in scale came a real elevation of the superhero fantasy, and for that reason many love City, and even its follow-up Arkham Knight. But for me I think no matter how well-crafted those sequels were, they turned the series into something a little less interesting.

I suspect many will feel the same about Elden Ring. The Dark Souls games are, in their way, quite similar to metroidvanias, especially in how their maps coil and twist around themselves, introducing new routes and shortcuts as you go that reveal you to be in one interconnected space, not a strictly linear series of levels. There's a real intricacy to the design of those worlds, and it’s hard to see how Elden Ring can maintain that in its huge open areas. It may be that they make the game exciting in a whole new way—but I suspect many die hard fans will feel that something has once again been lost along the way. – Robin Valentine, Print Editor

Flying a hang glider over the Rook Islands

Far Cry was always destined to be an open world series. Even the original, which had mostly linear levels, took place on big slices of map that gave the impression of an open world. Far Cry 2 took a step closer with two huge maps, each forming an open world experience where you could go where you wanted and approach missions with freedom. Each game since has been fully open world, and that's really become Far Cry's identity as a shooter.

Which isn't to say it's been a flawless transition. Ubisoft fumbled the formula in a few of the games, overstuffing the map with icons and distractions as if it was worried players would lose interest if there weren't constant animal attacks and collectibles in all directions. There are so many fast-travel points in recent Far Cry games that getting around the map quickly becomes just a matter of clicking an icon and waiting a few seconds. Ubisoft builds big, beautiful open worlds but then makes it so easy to traverse them that a bit of the mystery and challenge is lost. – Chris Livingston, Features Producer

Metal Gear Solid

I admire Metal Gear Solid 5's willingness to jettison the drawn-out, cutscene-heavy storytelling of the games that preceded it to focus on making an incredible stealth sandbox. We gushed about all the toys MGS5 gives you back when we awarded it game of the year in 2015 , and it's still a great example of how flexible open world design can be. Despite their size, too many open world games lead you by the hand from one mission setpiece to another. MGS5 swung hard the other way, giving you an almost ridiculous degree of freedom in how you approached infiltrating an enemy base to rescue a VIP or assassinate a target.

The open world itself is a relatively dull desert—traversing it isn't as engaging as parkouring across rooftops, and there are no stories like The Witcher 3's to make it come alive with a sense of place. But it doesn't need those things when the toys it gives you are so much fun; it's OK for the open world to simply exist as a container that holds the enemy AI you're poking and prodding. The more elaborate a plan you concoct, the more you'll get out of how MGS5 reacts. It's kind of amazing the developers didn't just come up with the Fulton launcher , the best tool in gaming history, and call it quits right there. Elden Ring seems like it may similarly be trading away some of its intricate level design, but in return it's promising far more flexibility in how you build your character, which may well make it as malleable as Metal Gear Solid 5. – Wes Fenlon, Senior Editor

Mass Effect

One of the weakest parts of the first Mass Effect were its 'unknown worlds', the mostly blank planets scattered with warehouses for bad guy storage and not much else. If these pocket open worlds hadn't been so boring, we wouldn't have been annoyed by the Mako we had to drive across them. It wasn't until Mass Effect: Andromeda that the series really embraced open world ideas, however, and we all know how that went.

Every planet had a checklist of tasks to complete, a certain amount of which had to be ticked off to make it viable for habitation, and those tasks frequently relied on backtracking—sometimes sending you to whole other planets and back again. It was like being guilt-tripped into sitting through loading screens. The lesson's an easy one: just because there's a lot of space on the map doesn't mean you have to use it all at once. – Jody Macgregor

Dragon Age: Inquisition continued the structure of its predecessors, having an overworld map split into lots of discrete zones you could load into. But it clearly still hoped to evoke an open world, by making each of those zones its own large sandbox full of sidequests and collectibles.

Some disgruntled fans at the time compared it to a singleplayer MMO, but in truth what it really felt like was a halfway house. You could see the developers caught between the way they were used to doing things, and some kind of greater ambition. That was further complicated by having to build the game with DICE's in-house engine, tech that was both unfamiliar and not well-suited to a top-down RPG. A harbinger of worse to come with Mass Effect: Andromeda.

In some ways it did work—it's certainly the most expansive vision of Thedas BioWare has created yet, and I had a lot of fun journeying across its inventive landscapes as my companions bickered. But it certainly led to a lumpy pace, and a lack of clear direction made it easy to get lost in pointless busywork without even realising it.

Case in point: the Hinterlands. The game's first zone is enormous and bland, a sort of generic grassy starting area. Players used to the traditional structure of Dragon Age assumed they'd need to clear out all the sidequests before continuing, or else risk not getting to complete them—not realizing that Inquisition's later structure actively encourages you to revisit earlier areas. After hours and hours of looking for lost sheep and picking herbs with no progress in the main story, many simply gave up in frustration. A worse mismatch in expectations between playerbase and game is hard to find, and 'skip the Hinterlands' has become a meme among the community.

I've no doubt the next Dragon Age will be open world too, and perhaps the fans will be more ready for it this time—but I also hope BioWare has learned some lessons in how to effectively blend their storytelling and crafted setpieces with wide open spaces. – Robin Valentine

Long before Infinite, Bungie took a stab at an open-world Halo with jazz-noir spin-off Halo 3: ODST. But far from an icon-cluttered collectathon, the rain-soaked streets of New Mombasa act as a tone piece—an open world as pure vibes, your lone soldier wandering around Covenant patrols and scouring audio logs in between more traditionally linear Halo levels.

But Infinite is where Halo goes full open-world, and sadly, I reckon wasn't a step worth taking. Halo levels have always had an open "feeling", but were still heavily directed and paced treks through ultimately linear spaces. Zeta Halo loses the globe (ring?) trotting spectacle of being whisked from one mythical alien setpiece to the next, leaving us with a single biome of open-world fields filled with repetitive activities in indistinct locations.

Halo, like Dark Souls, has always sported instantly memorable level design. My biggest fear for Elden Ring is that it will trade those carefully crafted spaces for something vaster and vaguer—a fear that Halo Infinite proved is more than well-founded. – Nat Clayton, Features Producer

Thief: Deadly Shadows, third in the series, made the City a hub to explore between missions. More than just a way to split the shopping screen into locations for players to walk between, the City became part of the story. The spooky building you can't help but notice as you pass? That's part of the foreshadowing the Thief games excel at , and you'll have to visit it later in a uniquely terrifying mission. As well as setting up story, the City shifted to reflect it. Factions changed how they felt about you, previously safe streets became dangerous.

The 2014 reboot had an even bigger between-meals City, though getting to the crossing points between districts became a matter of finding the right loading-screen gap to squeeze through or window to open, making it a headache to cross. And though it reflected plot developments just like the City did in Deadly Shadows, it was hard to take seriously when a district caught fire for story reasons and then continued burning without spreading no matter how long you spent there.

Changing any part of a game that players return to can emphasize the importance of events, whether it's your favorite shop being closed after a disaster or a wanted poster updating to reflect your latest crime. That change has to make sense no matter how long we spend there, though. Fingers crossed Elden Ring's multiple swamps won't catch fire as well as being full of poison. – Jody Macgregor

The Legend of Zelda

Zelda is not a PC series, but thanks to emulation the PC is the best place to play the best Zelda game , 2017's groundbreaking Breath of the Wild. The successes and failures of this game have been discussed to death in the last few years, and I think we'll probably have a whole 'nother conversation about "weapon durability: good or bad?" after Elden Ring comes out (it was good, by the way). Elden Ring will surely have some obvious parallels in how it encourages discovery without using a million minimap icons or a pulsing waypoint to tell you where to go, and I'm excited to see people dig in and compare the design of the two worlds. I wonder if Elden Ring used a triangle principle similar to Breath of the Wild?

Zelda's developers chose to sacrifice some of the complexity of the primary dungeons to focus on delivering a world that feels alive with physics and weather and time-of-day systems that all interact with one another in fastidious detail. That was all new to Zelda; none of it was building on stuff you could do in previous games. But it still felt like Zelda, because it embellished that sense of adventure that drove the best games of the series. Elden Ring seems like it's also giving up some of the density of its main dungeons for the sake of its open world. The question we can't answer until we play the full thing is exactly how much it's gaining in turn, but it's hard to imagine it really losing that incredible sense of place the Souls games have always had. – Wes Fenlon

Metro was once a series about surviving the horrors of a post-apocalypse Russia in the shelter of Moscow's metro system. As you can imagine in a game about literal tunnels, the first two Metro games were pretty linear. It seems obvious that an eventual third game would follow a similar pattern, but 4A Games really swung for the fences with Metro Exodus. The opening hour sees the main cast break free of the metro tunnels and set out for the Russian countryside in search of a new home.

Two of the game's four major levels are sandboxes. Neither are as big as Fallout or The Witcher, but they're meticulously modeled regions designed to be navigated slowly. Nothing is ever repeated twice. There are a handful of side quests and bandit camps to clear out and you can always count on finding a permanent upgrade or new attachment as a reward. 4A clearly went for quality over quantity with its open-worlds, which is rare in a genre dominated by maps with a billion icons.

Metro Exodus is a bit like Breath of the Wild in that way—exploration is the fun, and there are loads of cool mechanics to keep each moment interesting. Your main goal may just be to cross a river, but along the way you'll probably have to measure radiation and don a gas mask, mind its filter, patch holes if damaged, scavenge for ammo scraps, scout threats with binoculars, and pump air into your pneumatic pellet gun, all the while fighting irradiated monsters. 4A clearly put a lot of effort into evolving the world of Metro into a new genre with a fresh story, and it paid off. – Morgan Park, Staff Writer

Between levels in silent-movie prequel parody Lego Star Wars you hung out in the diner where Obi-Wan plays noir detective in Attack of the Clones. As the Lego series tackled other licences these free-play hubs grew, and by Lego Batman 2 you could leave the Batcave and drive around the entirety of Gotham City in an adorable Lego-block Batmobile. Lego Marvel Super Heroes had a recreation of Manhattan packed with goofy side stories—in one you have to track down a sax for Drax—and by Lego Lord of the Rings they just threw all of Middle-earth in.

What makes the Lego open worlds great is how off-kilter they are. While the main levels are usually playful recreations of familiar story beats, things get real wild in free-roam, where you can visit a zoo as Iron Man and ride around on a lion, or race pigs through Hobbiton. I don't expect to be able to do either of those in Elden Ring, but that sense the rules of tone and what's permissible are more relaxed away from the main story can make an open world a nice retreat from the plot, a buffet of light snacks to pick at between meals. – Jody Macgregor

There has been a big debate which cities are included within Russia’s Golden Ring. Therefore the Soviets made an official list with Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Some Golden ring itineraries also include smaller towns like Uglich with its ancient Kremlin or Alexandrov, the former residence of Russian princes.

Although each Golden Ring city has its own charms, the architecture is somewhat similar. You will see colorful onion domes, intricate frescoes, and ornate decorations, showcasing the unique Russian style. Therefore it would not make sense to include all of them in your Golden ring itinerary.

After some background research I decided to focus my own Golden Ring itinerary on the Golden Ring cities of Sergiev Posad, Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Suzdal.

Russia’s Golden Ring itinerary

Day 1 – 4: moscow.

Any Golden ring itinerary starts in Moscow. Russia’s crazy and chaotic capital. Personally, I didn’t particularly like Moscow, yet it is fascinating and has lots of interesting things to do. 4 days in Moscow would be enough to see its major attractions like the Moscow metro , the Red square and the Kremlin .

Moscow offers a great introduction to Russia and it is a good way to start your Golden Ring itinerary.

Day 5: Sergiev Posad

Sergiev Posad is either an easy day trip from Moscow or a stop over on your way to Rostov Veliky and Yaroslavl.

Sergiev Posad is probably one of the most important Golden Ring cities, because it is the seat of the Russian orthodox church. In other words, it’s like the Vatican of Russia. It all started with Saint Sergius. He was a hermit that lived in the forests around Sergiev Posad.

Other monks joined him and soon Saint Sergius became their spiritual leader. He built a small wooden church in 1337 and this is how the holy Trinity monastery started. Later Saint Sergius was declared the patron saint of Russia. After that the monastery grew into one of the most important monasteries of Russia.

The complex has several churches and cathedrals. Each with beautiful and ancient frescoes. It still is an active place of worship and even if you are not religious, watching a Russian orthodox mass is an enchanting experience.

Although this is not included in this Golden Ring itinerary, Sergiev Posad is also a good place from where you can make day trips to the other Golden Ring cities of Alexandrov and Pereslavl Zalessky.

Alexandrov is where tsar Ivan the terrible lived for 16 years and has an ancient Kremlin with a dark history. It was the center of Ivan’s state policy to repress the elite. Pereslavl Zalessky also has some ancient churches and monasteries. Both are connected by train or bus from Sergiev Posad within an hour.

How to get there : The easiest way to get from Moscow to Sergiev Posad is by train. I recommend taking one of the frequent local trains that leave almost every hour from Moscow’s Yaroslavsky train station. The journey takes 1.5 hours.

You can continue continue from Sergiev Posad by train to Pereslavl Zalessky (1 hrs), Rostov Veliky (2 hrs) or Yaroslavl (3 hrs) or return to Moscow on a day trip.

Day trips : Alexandrov, Pereslavl Zalessky

Day 6 – 7: Yaroslav

Yaroslavl is a rather big town with a scenic location on the Volga river. It’s history goes far back to the 11th century when it was an important economic center in the region. Ivan the Great loved Yaroslavl and the town joined the Moscow state in 1463.

It’s historic center is on the UNESCO world heritage list , because it is a good example of the city reform plans of Catherine the Great. Although some of its churches and monasteries are older, most buildings are from the 18th and 19th century.

Therefore Yaroslavl is an interesting mix reflecting different time periods. Most important, it has a variety of things to do that go beyond its ancient churches and monasteries. Although they are well worth a visit, you might by now, already suffer from an overdose of religious monuments on your Golden Ring itinerary.

Highlights of Yaroslavl include the scenic walks you can take along the Volga river embankment, feasting on dumplings in the first Soviet pelmeni restaurant (Podbelka) and filling your stomach with delicious Russian pies at Shtolle. For Soviet enthusiasts, there is also an impressive House of Soviets, a Lenin statue and a small monument to Tereshkova, the first woman in space.

Yaroslavl is also a great base to make some day trips to the more scenic and rural Golden Ring cities. Rostov Veliky and Kostroma with its picturesque ancient kremlins are about an hour away by train or bus. A bit further is Uglich.

How to get there : Yaroslavl and Moscow are connected by train in 3 to 4 hours.

Day trips : Rostov veliky, Kostroma, Uglich

Where to eat : Buffet number 1, Shtolle, Podbelka

Day 8: day trip to Rostov Veliky

My time was limited and therefore I could only make one day trip from Yaroslavl. I chose Rostov Veliky.

Together with Suzdal it was one of the most picturesque places on my Golden Ring itinerary. Even better, it lacks the touristy atmosphere from Suzdal and its Kremlin was one of the most beautiful I have seen. Add the scenic location on the Nero lake and the picture perfect image of Rostov Veliky is complete.

Rostov Veliky is small though. Outside of its Kremlin and the nearby Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery there isn’t much else to do. Which makes it perfect as a day trip from Yaroslavl or even Moscow (3+ hours by train).

The 16th century Kremlin is somewhat of an anomaly. Most Kremlins were built to protect the city’s most important buildings. Rostov’s impressive Kremlin walls were made more for show than anything else. The wide gates would allow any enemy to enter easily.

The kremlin has several ancient cathedrals, a courtyard and a peaceful garden. From the Kremlin it’s a scenic walk along lake Nero to the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery

How to get there : From Yaroslavl it is about 1 hour by train or bus to get to Rostov Veliky. From Moscow it will take more than 3 hours to get there.

Where to eat : Alyosha Popovich near the Kremlin serves delicious traditional Russian food for reasonable prices.

Day 9 – 10: Vladimir and Suzdal

Vladimir and Suzdal both developed in the 13th century. Vladimir as an administrative and economic center and Suzdal as the religious heart of the region. Together they are on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the white monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal .

Vladimir is one of the oldest cities in Russia’s golden ring and was founded by prince Vladimir. It soon became the capital of Russia and enjoyed great wealth and prosperity. It was a golden age in which most of Vladimirs white stone cathedrals and palaces were built. That was until the Mongols destroyed Vladimir in 1238.

Nearby Suzdal is slightly older, but lost its political power to nearby Vladimir. It remained an important religious center though with more monasteries and churches than any other town near Moscow.

Personally, I found it to be one of the most picturesque places in Russia’s Golden Ring. There is a rural rustic atmosphere that makes it feel like you are travelling back in time.

However, something needs to be noted here. It’s partly a Soviet creation. As they wanted to focus on Suzdal’s tourist potential the Soviets did not allow the construction of new or high rise buildings. They even moved wooden structures from other parts of Russia to Suzdal.

The result is that Suzdal is very touristic, but also very pretty. Furthermore, the historical significance of its 11th century Kremlin and 16th century monasteries is no less. Suzdal’s Kremlin is even older than the Moscow kremlin .

Suzdal has enough things to see and do for a full day trip from Vladimir or Moscow. A lot of people skip Vladimir, but its historic center is also well worth a visit. Some of its ancient cathedrals survived the Mongol invasion.

How to get there : From Yaroslavl to Vladimir there is no direct train connection. You could either take two fast trains (Yaroslavl – Moscow, Moscow – Vladimir) or a direct bus. There are only a few direct buses and the journey takes 5 hours.

From Moscow to Vladimir there is a high speed train to Vladimir that takes less than 2 hours.

What to see : Golden gate, Old Vladimir museum (water tower), Borodin blacksmith workshop, Annunciation church, Demetrius cathedral

Where to eat : Mint owl, Pelmenj

Day trips from Vladimir : Suzdal

How to get there : To get from Moscow to Suzdal you first need to get to Vladimir. In Vladimir you can go to the bus station that is conveniently located across the train station. There is a bus to Suzdal every 30 minutes and the journey is little less than an hour

What to see : Deposition of the robe convent, Alexander male monastery,Monastery of Saint Euthymius, Pokrovski monastery, Kremlin

Where to eat : Chaynaya, Gostiny dvor

After Russia’s Golden Ring cities

This Golden ring itinerary of Russia stops in Vladimir. After that you can either return to Moscow or continue your journey in Russia.

From Vladimir it is only 3 hours to Nizhny Novgorod. It is not part of Russia’s Golden Ring cities, but also has an old Kremlin and is nice to visit.

When to visit.

Russia’s Golden Ring cities are so scenic that every season has it’s own charms. I was there in winter and the thick blanket of snow only made it more like a fairytale.

Obviously spring is lovely with its blooming flowers and autumn brings beautiful colors in the trees. Summer is the peak tourist season in the Golden Ring cities, as the weather is generally warm and pleasant. However, it can get crowded, especially in July and August. This is also when many festivals and events take place, providing an opportunity to witness traditional celebrations and cultural performances.

Accommodation in Russia’s Golden Ring cities

Where to stay in moscow.

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus stand for clean and professional hostels with a mix of dormitories and a limited number of double rooms for good prices. They are often located close to one of the Moscow metro stations making travel in Moscow easy. There is one near Kurskaya and one near Paveletskaya (dorms only).

Vinegret hostel : Vinegret hostel is a clean and nice budget hostel with an excellent location in the heart of Moscow. It is right near Arbatskaya metro station on the famous arbat street. From there you can walk to the red square in only 30 minutes.

Axel hostel : Axel hostel has great budget dormitories with lots of privacy. It has a central location within walking distance of Kitay Gorod.

Where to stay in Sergiev Posad

Hostels Rus : Hostels Rus is one of the few hostels in Sergiev Posad. It has clean dormitories and double rooms. It’s a great budget option, but a bit far from everything. That said, it is still within walking distance from the center.

Guest house Shishkina : If you have a bit more money I can recommend the central Guest house Shishkina. The double rooms are lovely and still in the budget category.

Where to stay in Yaroslavl

City hostel : I stayed at City hostel. It’s a great budget place that is centrally located. The rooms were clean and the people were very helpful, despite the language barriers

Zolotoye Koltso : Zolotoye Koltso hostel has great reviews for its small, but clean and cheap rooms and dormitories in the centre of Yaroslavl.

Where to stay in Vladimir

Hostel Belyy Topol : I stayed in hostel Belyy topol. Although the staff didn’t really speak english, they were very helpful. The rooms were clean and the location was very convenient near the train station and in walking distance of the historic sights.

Hostel Vishnya : Hostel Vishnya is another hostel with good reviews near the train and bus station. It has both dormitories and private rooms for reasonable prices.

Samovar hostel : Samovar hostel has a scenic location within Vladimirs historic center. It has good reviews because of their clean and spacious dorms and private rooms.

Where to stay in Suzdal

Suzdal has lots of accommodation options. There are no real backpacker hostels, but you will find some budget guesthouses.

Patchwork guesthouse : Patchwork guesthouse is a simple guesthouse with a couple of small, but clean double rooms. It is within walking distance of the main sights and has a very friendly and helpful owner

Viktoria Guest house : Viktoria guesthouse is a good budget option not far from the center with clean rooms

Russia’s Golden Ring: day trips from Moscow into history and heritage

A short train ride north-east of Moscow lies a collection of towns foreign tourists often miss, but they’re rich in culture, tradition and fantastic sights

T he Golden Ring is a popular destination for Russian tourists: the towns in the region are ancient, and many were important centres in medieval Russia. But this area, north-east of Moscow, has more to offer, such as traditional food, and nature straight from Russian fairytales. Many visitors buy package tours for the entire region, but it’s easy to visit the towns on day trips from the capital, especially if you’re not ready for a week-long tour. The journey times to most are a couple of hours by train from Moscow.

What to see The heritage of this place is vast: the Transfiguration monastery, founded in the 11th century, was a favourite of Ivan the Terrible and is now a museum. It is also part of the city’s large Museum Reserve . A walk along the banks of the Volga, the longest river in Europe, is as much a cultural activity as it is a hike. The Governor’s house museum has an excellent collection of the Yaroslavl school of icon painting and the Music and Time Museum has the country’s largest collection of antique record players, vinyl records and clocks.

For dinner, consider Ioann Vasiliyevich (Revolutsionnaya Street), a restaurant themed after a Soviet film but interesting even to those who haven’t seen it. The decor is a mixture of medieval Russian halls and 1970s Soviet flats, and the food combines traditional Russian and Soviet cuisines. The restaurant is a part of the Cinema Club hotel.

How to get there By train from Moscow’s Yaroslavskiy station. Return tickets from £18, journey takes around four hours.

Where to stay The Cinema Club has private rooms from £33. For a more affordable stay, go to Like Hostel (25B Andropova street), only a few streets away, with dorms from £6 and private rooms from £18.

What to see This ancient Russian city is a must-see for its traditional white stone architecture and monumental Orthodox cathedrals: the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius and Dormition (Uspensky) Cathedral – both on Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. The Golden Gate, which marks the entrance into the old town, is another famous landmark. For those interested in traditional crafts and souvenirs, the Museum of Crystal and Lacquer Miniatures is in the Old Believers Trinity Church behind the Golden Gate, and also exhibits traditional embroidery. The Gingerbread museum might interest those with kids or a sweet tooth – a standard tour includes a tasting. The museum’s cafe, called Blinnaya Izba (Blini Hut), serves traditional Russian crepes, blini , with a variety of fillings and toppings. If you’re in the city for more than a day, consider a trip to the ancient Bogoluybovo village , a 20-minute drive from the city and home to the Unesco-protected Church of the Intercession, on the banks of the Nerl river.

How to get there Trains from Moscow’s Kursky or Yaroslavskiy stations cost from £14 return and take between 90 minutes and three hours.

Where to stay Vozduh hostel is a five-minute walk from the Golden Gate and has dorm beds from £6 a night. Orion hotel , close by on 2-aya Nikolskaya Street, is a popular choice with tourists and has doubles from £45.

Sergiyev Posad

What to see Sergiyev Posad is known as the heart of Russian Orthodoxy. The Trinity Lavra of St Sergius (or Troitse-Sergieva Lavra), one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in the world, is the major tourist attraction. Founded in the 14th century, it is still an active monastery. Visit during the week to avoid the crowds and walk around the Lavra’s peaceful buildings and take in its tradition. There are two cathedrals and eight churches on the grounds, as well as two cafes, serving local must-tries: homemade bread, pastries and kvas (a soft drink made with fermented bread). A nearby restaurant, Gostevaya Izba , (Guest Hut) serves Russian food made from monastery produce – vegetables, dairy products, bread and local fish, as well as traditional herbal teas in real samovars.

How to get there On a suburban train from Moscow’s Yaroslavskiy station, the journey takes around 90 minutes, with returns from £4. The walk from Sergiyev Posad station to the Lavra is about 15 minutes.

What to see A 30-minute drive from Vladimir, Suzdal has its own Kremlin fortress, five monasteries and countless churches. If you’re getting tired of history and religion, go to Torgovaya ploschad (Market Square), and shop for berries, honey and mushrooms, or souvenirs. There’s also an open-air Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life that has old rural houses brought to Suzdal from all over the region.

How to get there Take the train from Moscow (Kusrskiy or Yaroslavskiy station) to Vladmir (returns from £14) and then a bus from Vladimir bus station, 1 Vokzalnaya Square, to Suzdal (returns £2).

Where to stay Hostel Patchwork offers dorms from £8 and excellent traditional Russian breakfasts. For private rooms head to Volshebniy Sad guesthouse , with private rooms from £17, a bike-renting service and barbecue facilities.

Rostov Velikiy

What to see Rostov Velikiy (don’t confuse it with Rostov-on-Don, a different town in a different part of Russia) is one of the oldest towns in Russia: its chronicles date to AD862. There’s a Kremlin fortress, four monasteries, countless ancient churches, and the large, peaceful Lake Nero, a perfect spot for contemplation. If you get too philosophical, don’t forget Rostov is also a foodie destination: head to Lukova Sloboda , a local museum and cafe exploring the onion traditions of the region, to try onion soup and onion buns, or buy a jar of onion jam as a souvenir. Next to it, on Dostoyevskogo Street, is Schuchiy Dvor , serving pike from the nearby lake; try it in a traditional soup called ukha , or in burger form with raspberry sauce.

How to get there Trains from Moscow’s Yaroslavskiy station costs £14 return and take about three hours.

Where to stay Close to the Kremlin, on Podozerka Street, is the popular Khors guesthouse . It’s in an old wooden merchant’s house owned by local artists. The rooms, from £17, are decorated in dacha style, complete with Russian carpets – but remember to book well in advance. For even more affordable lodging, head to the hostel in the Troitse-Sergiyev Varnitskiy monastery : it offers dorm beds from £4.50 and private rooms from £10.

Elden Ring: How To Change Your Eye Color

Quick links, draconic eyes, bloodshot eyes, frenzied eyes, how to get your eyes back to normal.

With a character creator so in-depth as Elden Ring 's, you'd be forgiven for spending altogether too much time editing and sculpting your player character until you're perfectly happy with it. After all, you'll be playing with them for many hours.

Elden Ring: What Are Outer Gods?

It makes sense, then, that you'd notice if something changed about your character, for example, the color of your eyes. Your actions in Elden Ring can lead to this sudden cosmetic change in three ways — here's how they occur and how to reverse them.

Updated March 23, 2024 by Marco Vito Oddo: While your eye color marks some specific gameplay milestones, these changes also reveal more about the complex lore of Elden Ring. FromSoftware spared no effort to create one of the best original stories in video games, hiding small clues about the Lands Between in things such as a sudden change in your eyes. So, as we dig through item descriptions and obscure optional dialogue, we get a clear picture of what's really happening in Elden Ring.

This is probably the easiest example to explain - this change turns your normal eyes into yellow, almost draconic eyes. This happens after consuming a number of Dragon Hearts at either the Church or Cathedral of Dragon Communion .

The Church of Dragon Communion is located in Limgrave, on the other side of the Coastal Cave dungeon .

The Cathedral of Dragon Communion is located in the southern parts of Caelid.

Those who have performed the Dragon Communion will find their humanity slowly slipping away. Once they fully succumb to their fate, they are left no more than wyrms that crawl the earth. (Magma Breath Description)

The above incantation description explains why this process happens. You gradually become more draconic as you perform Dragon Communion (the act of consuming Dragon Hearts in exchange for powers). While this amounts to no more than a cosmetic eye change in-game, it's a neat indicator of your character's choices having consequences.

Elden Ring: What Is The Erdtree?

The Cult of the Dragon began with Godwyn, the Golden, the first child of Marika and Godfrey. During the war against the Ancient Dragons, Godwyn defeated one of Leyndell's most powerful draconic enemies, Fortissax. However, instead of killing Fortissax, Godwyn offered him a truce.

Godwyn and Fortissax would become friends, helping to end the war and turning dragon power into part of the Golden Order. Ironically, Godwyn's efforts to build a better world would eventually lead to the emergence of the Magma Wyrms, as people who abuse the Dragon Communion turn into cursed lizards. So, you better watch out since the first sign of this transformation is your draconic eyes.

Your eyes will become permanently reddened and bloodshot if you pursue White Mask Varre's side quest . This begins at the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes and involves you invading a few other players and then soaking a cloth with the blood of a maiden.

You must take these steps to become a Knight of Mohg, the Lord of Blood.

Once you've taken care of those tasks, return to Varre, and he will anoint your finger with blood in a ritual that sounds very painful.

This noble blood will be an immutable badge of honor, once it settles. Inside of you. Oh, good heavens. Clench your teeth, or something. Never forget that feeling of agony. For it is what binds you to Luminary Mogh, to all of us. Ha ha ha... You have the sweetest scream. My lambkin. -White Mask Varre dialogue

This ritual triggers the cosmetic change and seems to represent the noble blood settling inside you. It is possible that the anointment ritual actually makes your blood accursed, with Mohg and, therefore, the knightly order that you join during this quest being associated with accursed blood. The red eyes also indicate the influence of the Formless Mother , the Outer God Mohg serves. So, by performing the ritual, you are also blessed with the Formless Mother's blood.

The bloodshot eyes effect will override both your normal eye cosmetics and the draconic eyes effect. If you then remove the eye alterations using the method detailed below, you cannot get your draconic eyes back. The frenzied eyes effect detailed below will also override the bloodshot effect, so be wary of that if you want to pursue that ending.

This cosmetic effect is linked to one of Elden Ring's many endings - namely, the Lord of the Frenzied Flame ending . One of the steps you must take to achieve this ending is to interact with the Three Fingers in the chasm behind Mohg, the Omen's boss arena . Their blessing will alter your eyes, bringing out a yellow, chaotic hue.

In Elden Ring lore, eyes are a pathway to the cosmic forces trying to take over the Lands Between , with blind characters seeing these entities better than anyone else. For instance, while taking over Malenia, the Outer God of Rot took away her vision. Hyetta, in her turn, is chosen as a maiden by the Frenzied Flame due to her blindness. The Frenzied Flame guides Hyetta by making her ingest madness-inflicted eye , which gives her a glimpse of the path she must follow to find the Three Fingers.

Elden Ring: Every School Of Sorcery, Explained

The Frenzied Flame is an Outer God who brought the flames of Chaos to the Lands Between, just like the Greater Will brought Order. The former was actually summoned to combat the latter, and now the Frenzied Flame seeks to destroy the Lands Between, cleansing it of the Greater Will's Golden Order. It has envoys in the Three Fingers, just as the Greater Will has the Two Fingers.

To gaze into one another's eyes is truly the most intimate form of human contact. -Inescapable Frenzy Description

Interacting with the Frenzied Flame is well-known to cause a horrific madness that affects body and mind alike ("maddening pain and unstoppable tears" -Unendurable Frenzy Description ), and you can see this madness in your foes through their brightly glowing yellow eyes. It stands to reason, then, that your eyes are not glowing quite as bright when you interact with the Three Fingers, which may imply that you have the ability to interact with the Frenzied Flame without such repercussions.

How some eye colors change to replace others tells you something about the power hierarchy in the Lands Between. Draconic eyes are a physical change caused by your body slowly turning into a reptilian creature. Bloodshoot eyes, in turn, are a mark of an Outer God, the mightiest forces mentioned in the Elden Ring.

It also makes sense that frenzied eyes replace bloodshot eyes, even though Outer Gods cause both. That's because the Frenzied Flame has an envoy below the Capital, the Three Fingers; the Formless Mother, however, is still a distant threat to the Lands Between's status quo.

Getting your eyes back to normal is a simple case of toggling the Eye Cosmetics option in the Detailed Face Details menu of the appearance-altering mechanic. This can be accessed in two ways:

You will only be able to toggle the cosmetics on or off. Unfortunately, you cannot choose between all the cosmetic changes you've unlocked. Frenzied eyes override bloodshot eyes, which override draconic eyes.

His attacker had piranhic energy. He also had a knife. Rushdie lost an eye, but he has slowly recovered thanks to the attentive care of doctors and the wife he celebrates here.
