Here are 4 don't-miss stops around 2024 Washington high school summer football tour

S pring football in Washington opened this week, and over the next couple of months, some of the state's top talent - team and individual - will be making appearances.

Here are four prominent summer-football events to monitor around the state in June and July:

AVERY STRONG COLLEGE SHOWCASE

When : Sunday.

Where : Practice fields, Baker Stadium on University of Puget Sound campus, Tacoma

Schedule : Session I is specialists, 8 a.m.-9 a.m.. Session II is offensive and defensive linemen, 9 a.m.-11 a.m.. Session III is running backs, tight ends and linebackers, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sessions IV and V are quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs, 2:30 p.m.-7 p.m.

Organizer/founder : Taylor Barton and Jeff Thomas.

Event debut year : 2023.

What to know : It gets busy very quickly on the three-week "showcase circuit" around the region, starting with the power-packed first weekend of the Northwest Showcase in Oregon - and  this emerging national entity . What is incredible is the amount of growth this event has seen in Year 2 as more than 700 athletes (up from 500 in debut year) from 24 states and Canada (up from 13) will be participating. And recruiters from more than 30 universities, including UW and Michigan - the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship game participants - are expected to be on hand. "We want to make sure we have the ability to have enough quality reps not only for the individual camper, but also the college coaches who evaluate them," UPS coach Jeff Thomas said. The showcase will feature eight national four-star prospects from 2025 and 2026, including Bethel's Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, Mater Dei of California's Kodi Greene (formerly of Eastside Catholic) and Carver of Georgia's Tristian Givens. Last year, a check for $10,000 was presented to the  Avery Huffman Foundation , which is intent on helping find a cure for diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DPIG) - or fast-growing brain tumors.

PLU FOOTBALL SHOWCASE/11-on-11 PASSING TOURNAMENT

When : June 19.

Where : Practice fields on Pacific Lutheran University campus, Parkland.

Schedule : The morning padded showcase is from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The 11-v.-11 passing tournament is from 2 p.m.-7 p.m.

Organizer/founder : Spencer Crace, Johnny DuRocher and Eric Kurle (brain trust).

Event debut year : 2018.

What to know : Because the individual workouts and 11-on-11 scrimmages are padded with helmets, this is the most unique stop on the Northwest's "showcase circuit' in June. Also distinctive this year - the one-day showcase will be held on a weekday (Wednesday) in an attempt to not only draw more college recruiters (UW staff expected to be in attendance) but avoid the beginning of weekend official recuiting visits. Camp organizer Spencer Crace knows the padded showcase numbers will take a bit of a hit, but still considers this camp "one of the best (money) values for kids" in the state. As far as the passing tournament, most of the usual big-name suspects (Graham-Kapowsin, Lincoln, Sumner, Yelm), as well as a first out-of--state visitor (Juneau HS in Alaska) will be competing in the passing tournament, which is expected to draw nearly 30 schools.

THURSTON COUNTY TEAM CAMP

When : June 21-22.

Where : Tumwater High School.

Schedule : First session of scrimmages each day are at 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and noon. Second session of scrimmages each day are at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Organizer/founder : Bill Beattie and Willie Garrow.

What to know : Want to see reigning Class 3A champion Bellevue scrimmage against Class 4A runner-up Graham-Kapowsin? Or how 3A Lincoln of Tacoma holds up against 4A Kennedy Catholic? Five years ago, former Tumwater coach Bill Beattie began this event as a way to engage local programs for round-robin live work. Now, it has expanded to 25 schools (up from 16 from 2023), including some of the biggest heavy hitters in the state. This is also the first year where an out-of-state school (David Douglas or Oregon) will participate. "It has grown a ton," second-year Thunderbirds coach Willie Garrow said. "We have seen more and more programs that have been successful want to come in ... to play teams that will push them." Varsity programs will get up to six hour-long scrimmages over two days while junior-varsity and 'C' teams get 45-minute scrimmages.

LAKEWOOD COUGARS CHAMPIONSHIP 7-vs-7 PASSING TOURNAMENT

When : July 27.

Where : Lakewood High School, Arlington.

Schedule : Games go from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Organizer/founder : Adam McShane, Dan Teeter and Dawn Taylor.

Event debut year : 2008.

What to know : You won't find a summer football event with more fun going on than the Lakewood Cougars passing tournament. First, it is the longest-running  7-vs-7 passing tournament (with longtime sponsor Adrenaline Fund-Raising) in the region - and will feature a pair of WIAA champions in Lake Stevens ( event runner-up last summer to Bothell ) and Anacortes, along with usual contenders Kennedy Catholic and North Creek to go along with newcomers Archbishop Murphy and Roosevelt in filling out a 24-team field. Secondly, while the passing tournament is going on, so is the annual multi-event "Lineman Challenge" - which offers a great deal of sideshow entertainment. "The whole community really rallies around this thing," second-year Lakewood coach Adam McShane said.

N.Y.C. Public Schools Will Send 8th Graders to Visit Holocaust Museum

New York City will give schools the option to send eighth-graders on field trips to the Museum of Jewish Heritage as part of an effort to address antisemitism.

An exterior view of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City in Manhattan.

By Emma G. Fitzsimmons

As tension continues to simmer over the Israel-Hamas war, New York City officials have embraced a privately funded initiative to send all eighth graders in public and charter schools to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

The program, part of a $2.5 million public-private partnership to address antisemitism, will be seeded with $1 million from a foundation run by Jon Gray, the president of the investment firm Blackstone.

The citywide field trip plan, which was announced on Thursday, will center on the museum’s efforts to educate younger visitors about the Holocaust. The initiative comes as schools grapple with questions about how to approach the Israel-Hamas war and what to teach about the history of the conflict. It will be optional for schools and will start this fall.

In places like California , there have been pushes for teaching pro-Palestinian lessons in schools. Leaders in New York City’s school system, which is particularly diverse, with tens of thousands of Jewish, Muslim and Arab students, are moving to offer new curriculum materials about antisemitism and Islamophobia .

New York is one of nearly two dozen states that are required to teach students about the Holocaust, and lawmakers included $500,000 in the state budget this year to review and update Holocaust curriculums in schools.

The field trip program was created by Julie Menin, a Jewish city councilwoman from Manhattan whose mother and grandmother survived the Holocaust in Hungary. She said that she was worried about a rise in antisemitic attacks in the city.

“We need a proactive approach to combat this hatred at its roots,” she said.

Ms. Menin said that eighth grade was an appropriate time for students to learn about the atrocities of the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed. She said that visiting the exhibition would make a more lasting impression than reading about it in a textbook.

“We know there are Holocaust deniers,” she said. “When you see this exhibition and you personally witness the stories of survivors, it truly makes a difference.”

The program will be offered to more than 85,000 students in public and charter schools over the next three years. The museum , in Lower Manhattan, opened in 1997 and describes itself as a living memorial to the Holocaust.

Shahana Hanif, the first Muslim woman elected to the City Council, who represents a district in Brooklyn, said the program was a good investment and also underscored the need for programming built around Palestinian history.

“There is no Palestinian Cultural Center in New York City, nor an Islamic Heritage Museum,” she said. “These would be great investments for an inclusive education and learning opportunity.”

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also supported the use of field trips to “help students of today recognize and oppose modern genocides, whether in China, Sudan, Myanmar, Gaza or anywhere else.”

Mr. Gray, who is Jewish, has worked with Ms. Menin on other programs to offer free swim lessons and college savings accounts to public school students. He and his wife, Mindy, said in a statement that an “alarming rise in antisemitism today must be addressed through better education about our past — both its darkest moments and the incredible displays of courage in response.”

The museum will hire additional staff to run the program and work with schools to schedule tours and to provide free transportation.

The city’s Education Department is also working with the museum to create a new Holocaust teaching guide for educators that will be released in the fall. The schools chancellor, David C. Banks, has said that by June 2025, the system will offer separate curriculum series on the culture and contributions of Jewish and Muslim Americans to society — as part of a social studies initiative that has already offered materials on Asian Americans and L.G.B.T.Q. stories.

Mr. Banks, who attended the announcement along with City Council members and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, praised the field trip program.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is currently offering a new exhibit, called “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark,” which is designed for 9- to 12-year-olds and explores how ordinary Danes saved 7,200 Jews by smuggling them into Sweden by boat.

Troy Closson contributed reporting.

For Jason Caron and family, life is perfectly good as is following T4 finish at Senior PGA Championship

Change Text Size

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Jason Caron had not forgotten how to play golf. It’s just that these days, being a husband and father in addition to running a busy private golf club (Mill River in Oyster Bay, New York) as its PGA Head Professional, Caron, now 51, does not get to play it all that often.

But the all-around game that took him from a youth on Cape Cod all the way to the PGA TOUR (65 starts, best finish of T-15 at the 2003 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) and through 99 starts on the Korn Ferry is still in there, somewhere, and every now and again he is able to summon it, showing it off like a lucky penny. He did so on Sunday at the 84 th KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, and it was downright magical.

In his first big-time start among the over-50 set, Caron did more than show up in a split-second cameo in the script. He began Sunday’s final round at Harbor Shores three shots out of the lead, and just kept making birdies. Birdie on the first hole. Birdie at the second. Beginning at the difficult par-4 sixth, he reeled off four more. Richard Bland and Greg Chalmers were trying to pull away, and they could not shake Caron.

Mind you, this also was against the likes of Ernie Els and Steve Stricker, Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington, all accomplished players, a couple already in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Before too long, Caron was 6-under through 10 holes, and then 13-under for the tournament. He was one shot back. Here was Walter Mitty, a part-time golfer, challenging some of the world’s top seniors for the title ... seemingly interjected into some sort of wonderful, hazy dream.

There were two shotgun starts going on back at Mill River on Sunday, but most members wanted to know how their head professional was doing over on the shores of Lake Michigan. Life at Mill River is a family endeavor for the Carons. Jason’s wife, Liz (Janangelo) Caron, was an excellent player on two NCAA-winning teams at Duke, and also gives lessons at the club. Sunday, the couple’s two daughters, Caroline and Julia, ages 11 and 7, watched dad hold his own against some of the game’s giants. Pretty cool.

During an 80-minute weather delay late in the round, the Caron family – Jason’s parents were there, too – spread out in player dining and tried to dry off as Liz tried rebooking later flights home to New York (to no avail – they’d try again on Monday).

Within three shots of the tournament lead heading into Sunday after his third-round 67, Jason was asked a couple of times how interested he would be, if he won, to take up membership on PGA TOUR Champions. That’s the odd thing. As much as he loves the game, Jason really holds not the smallest interest in returning to life as a tour pro.

He was relaxed all week, getting frustrated only once, when he hit driver into a straightaway bunker on the seventh hole on Thursday. Other than that, he handled the pressure, if there was any he felt at all, with great ease. He was hitting golf shots, that's all. Where's the pressure in that?

Caron’s round finally stalled early on the back nine, when he missed a shortish par putt at the par-4 14 th and failed to birdie the par-5 15 th , missing from 5 feet. But he fought to the end, no shot better than the 8-iron he stuffed in close for birdie at Harbor Shores’ difficult 16 th hole as rain started to fall.

Jason Caron dials in approach to set up birdie at KitchenAid Senior PGA

“I was so impressed with his game,” said Richard Green, who made two eagles Sunday, shot 65, and finished second to Bland. “Unbelievably good. ... Looked unflappable. On 18, really demanding tee shot, the drive was beautiful. He hits it good enough to be on the Champions Tour full-time, no problem.”

That’s the thing, though. Caron would love to make more starts in senior majors, perhaps, but playing week to week again, packing suitcases and running to catch flights, missing his girls' activities, Caron doesn’t have the slightest interest in pursuing that.

“I love what I do,” said Caron, smiling. Maybe if he and Liz did not have children, it might be different. “Having little kids and being able to watch them grow up means a lot more to me than hitting a white golf ball down the fairway.”

Caron walked away with a check for $154,000 for his play, which was terrific. It would take a lot of short-game lessons to equal that. Better yet, the tournament’s sponsor, KitchenAid, awards a neat perk to both the tournament winner and the Low Senior PGA of America Golf Professional (which was Caron, by 10 shots over Iowa’s Jeff Schmid). They will receive a full kitchen suite of new appliances.

Liz Caron smiled upon learning this news. It seems back home in the New York, in the new house they purchased a year ago, the stove in the kitchen hasn’t worked for some time, which makes it tough to entertain. A bunch of birdies took care of that.

“My mother was joking to me, she’s like, 'Maybe now you’ll be able to afford a stove,'” Liz said. “I’ve just been using a little toaster/convection oven. Maybe we’ll up our game.”

Later this week, holiday airline travel willing, Team Caron will be back to a hectic, crazy and thoroughly enjoyable life as club professionals they have come to know.

Jason's performance at Harbor Shores will keep a smile on his face for a long, long time. The week was great, the six-figure check was fantastic, and the idea of a new kitchen a complete surprise. A life back out on tour? No thanks.

“The grass is always greener on the other side,” Liz said. “Being here one week has been fun. Being here every week? We’ve already been through it. You see a lot of times, these guys that are club pros, they want to live that dream, which is amazing.

"We’ve been there. Being here (this week), having Jason play so well, having family here, having our two little turkeys (daughters) running around and doing cartwheels ... I always say, 'Life is too good.' We’re so blessed and fortunate. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

PERU — A woman was shot and killed in her car allegedly by her husband Tuesday evening after a crash on Route 108, according to police.

David Gaudreau

David Gaudreau, 60, was arrested late Tuesday evening and charged with murder, said Maine State Police Lt. Aaron M. Turcotte.

Gaudreau, of Greenwood, made his first appearance in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday and was represented by attorney of the day A. Tucker Derstine. Derstine did not challenge probable cause for the murder charge and reserved argument on bail. Judge Andrew Robinson ruled Gaudreau is to be held without bail pending a future hearing.

Derstine floated the possibility of a mental health examination for Gaudreau. Robinson asked Derstine to communicate the possibility to Gaudreau’s appointed attorney Justin Leary for his consideration.

Police responded to several reports of a motor vehicle crash on Route 108 at approximately 7:10 p.m. in the area of 106-109 Auburn Road, Route 108 in Peru. Callers also reported that a truck stopped next to the vehicle and fired shots into the car, Turcotte said.

When first responders arrived, they discovered a blue Hyundai on the side of the road with a deceased female in the driver’s seat.  The female was later identified as Dale Gaudreau, 59, Turcotte said. Advertisement

Police arrest suspect in Peru car crash and gunfire incident

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department requested the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South to assist with the investigation.

David Gaudreau had reportedly called several family members and told them that he shot his wife.

At 11:34 p.m., David Gaudreau surrendered himself to the Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s department.  He was transported to Cumberland County Jail.

Earlier Wednesday, the Dixfield-based Regional School Unit 56 closed district schools in the aftermath of a vehicle crash and shooting Tuesday night on Route 108 near the entrance to Dirigo Elementary School.

According to a message from school officials, Route 108 was still closed at 5 a.m. Wednesday when the decision was made, prompting the decision to close all schools. Officials added that the closure will not affect the last day of school.

Route 108 has now reopened.

Staff writer Joe Charpentier contributed to this story.
