Tour overview ..., gallery - click to enlarge image.
With the popularity of the new remake of James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small, let me take you on a private driver guided tour of many of the locations from the TV series.
We will visit Grassington which features in the series as Darrowby, exploring the Yorkshire Dales market town as well as taking in the Drovers Arms and Skeldale House.
We will also make stops at Mrs Pumphrey’s home, Helen’s farm, the narrow bridge, the church where James and Helen get married, Arncliffe village which features as the back of Skeldale House, travel the narrow dry stone walled lined roads where James drives and also stop at the church where Helen stands up Hugh at the altar. As well as the locations I will bring to life the history and heritage of the area and you will get to see the stunning scenery in this beautiful national park at first hand.
Unlike some tours which include the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, this tour is un-rushed and prefers to help you immerse yourself in the Dales landscape.
You never know who you may bump into on our adventures!

All Creatures Great and Small Group Tour
This hit drama series based on James Herriot's famous books follows the adventures of a village veterinarian practice in Yorkshire in the 1930s. Visit the breathtaking country locations and charming village where the series was filmed.
Tour Highlights
- Visit Grassington, used as the village of 'Darrowby' in the series, where James Herriot starts his new life - many local shops were transformed for the series. The local bakery and chocolatier became 'Darrowby Cycles', the gift shop transformed into 'Higgins Bakers' and the local bookshop stood in for the greengrocers.
- Enjoy some refreshments in the coffee shop that was used by the cast and crew on their breaks.
- Photo opportunities outside the pub used for exterior shots of 'The Drover's Arms'.
- Visit historic Broughton Hall, which was used in several scenes for Mrs Pumphrey's House.
- Jump off the coach and have a photo stop at Malham Lings, the spot where James Herriot prematurely gets off the bus for his trip to Darrowby. See rolling countryside in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
- Include a visit to the James Herriot museum; the fully restored site of James Herriot's original home and veterinary practice (known in the books as Skeldale House) - the original TV series was also filmed here.
- Enjoy lunch in the pub used for interior scenes at 'The Drover's Arms'.
- Enjoy a trip along the heritage railway line which appeared in the series, which includes Oakworth train station.
- Visit beautiful Janet's Foss - a small waterfall pool used in scenes when James is swimming.
- The farm which appears as Helen's family farm.

What Our Clients Say
I was very fortunate to be on their 70th and 75th D-Day celebration tours. The service and attention to details was exceptional. It was very moving to go back.
As a Jane Austen enthusiast, this tour was perfect - and the Jane Austen Festival in Bath was just fabulous to see!
Words fail me...The Downton Abbey was a perfectly wonderful travel experience! We did not know we would be the ONLY guests at the Abbey. When we realised how truly exclusive our tour was we were speechless! Surreal being there and actually meeting Lady Carnarvon.

York Day Trip to Yorkshire Dales
This fantastic day trip from York has a real ‘private tour’ feel as you are picked up from your hotel in York. With a maximum of 6 people per group, you’ll enjoy a uniquely personal experience. The size of the vehicle chosen for this tour allows us to take you right into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the tiny rural lanes and hidden backroads. We take you where the 16-seater minibuses and bigger coaches simply can’t go. You’ll spend the day in the company of a Yorkshire guide, allowing you to ask questions along the way and to make extra photo stops on demand at truly unforgettable locations in the incredible Yorkshire Dales.
Full itinerary:
On this exclusive small-group tour from York, you explore some of Yorkshire’s most iconic scenery as you travel on the rural lanes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. You’ll see sights that have been featured in ‘All Creatures Great & Small’, including Darrowby, and you’ll have chance to enjoy lunch (payable locally) at “The Drover’s Arms”. You’ll also spend time at the fabulous “World of James Herriot Museum” in Thirsk (entrance included).
With a maximum of six passengers per group, this tour takes you away from the main roads and busy tourist trails to discover the timeless scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. Your driver-guide, a native Yorkshireman with a real connection to the region, takes you on the rural roads and country lanes that can’t be accessed by big tour groups.
Your day begins with collection from your accommodation in York city centre, before heading out of York and into the North Yorkshire countryside. The first stop of the itinerary is in the town of Thirsk, where you’ll visit the World of James Herriot Museum (entrance ticket included). Located in the very building where James Herriot lived and worked, the museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of veterinary science in James Herriot’s time, as well as a wonderful look at the creation of the two different adaptations of ‘ All Creatures Great & Small ‘.
After approximately 75-90 minutes in Thirsk, we travel towards the scenery of the amazing Yorkshire Dales National Park. Our route takes us through the small city of Ripon, where we’ll enjoy a brief stop at Ripon Cathedral. We continue the journey into Nidderdale, a region designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passing through the town of Pateley Bridge before we reach Wharfedale and the charming town of Grassington. The small market town of Grassington is famous as the filming location for “Darrowby” in the latest series of ‘ All Creatures Great & Small’ . Walking through the front door of the “Drover’s Arms” (the Devonshire Arms in real life), you’ll have chance to enjoy lunch (pre-ordered earlier in the day to save time). After lunch, you’ll have time in Grassington to wander through the town and take photos in front of “Skeldale House”, before our tour continues into the picturesque scenery of Wharfedale.
There are countless incredible photo opportunities on this drive as your guide shows off some of England’s finest countryside, rolling hills, babbling streams and valley views. We’ll stop at the beautiful 12th century Church of St Michael & All Angels in Hubberholme (where James & Helen are married) and pause for photos overlooking Yockenthwaite (the Alderson’s farm), before climbing into the mountainous scenery between Wharfedale and Wensleydale.
We drop into Wensleydale make a brief stop at the Wensleydale Creamery, where you’ll have chance to sample some of the famous local cheese, before making a final brief stop at Aysgarth Falls, where you’ll have chance to see the thundering stepped limestone waterfall.
Finally, we head out of the Yorkshire Dales and make our way back to York, concluding a fantastic day out in Yorkshire with drop off at your accommodation in the city.
- Chevron down How it works:
The tour begins with collection from your accommodation in York. Pick-ups usually start at 8:40am-8:45am. Leaving York, it is not long before we are surrounded by the countryside and farmland of Yorkshire as we head north towards Thirsk.
We reach the market town of Thirsk for an included visit to the wonderful “World of James Herriot Museum”. The museum is located in the very building where the creator of James Herriot, real life vet Alf White, lived and worked.
After approximately 90 minutes to explore the museum, we jump back on board the touring vehicle and head out towards the Yorkshire Dales.
Our route to the Dales takes us through the small city of Ripon, where we pause for 15 minutes to see Ripon cathedral and its original church crypt (built in AD 672).
The next step of the journey takes us through Nidderdale (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and then on and into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Our first stop is Grassington, the town featured as “Darrowby” in the latest series of All Creatures Great & Small”.
Our time in Grassington begins with an included lunch at the Devonshire Arms – the pub that, from the outside at least, featured as ‘The Drover’s Arms’ in All Creatures Great & Small. After lunch and tea or coffee, you’ll have a few minutes to explore Grassington and see the building used as ‘Skeldale House’.
We then head out across the scenery of Wharfedale and Wensleydale as we begin our driving tour of the Yorkshire Dales. We make regular photos stops along the way as we explore the landscape made famous by James Herriot in All Creatures Great & Small. We’ll stop at the Church of St Michael & All Angels in Hubberholme and again overlooking Yockenthwaite (familiar as the Alderson’s Farm). We make a brief stop at the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, where you’ll have chance to sample Yorkshire’s famous cheese, and make a final stop at Aysgarth Falls where you’ll have chance to photograph the dramatic stepped waterfall.
We then return to York, arriving back in the city centre at approximately 5:30pm . The tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel in the city.

12 All Creatures Great & Small Filming Locations In Yorkshire That Every Fan Should Visit
Need your James Herriot fix while we await series four of All Creatures Great and Small ? You won’t be short of places to visit in Yorkshire. From the town that plays Darrowby itself to real-life Alf and Joan’s wedding venue, here’s our guide to the best All Creatures Great and Small places to visit.
1. Grassington
Fans of the new series will recognise Grassington as the IRL home of Darrowby. The market square is transformed into a 1930s Yorkshire, with the whole community coming together for the effort.
Despite its connection to All Creatures Great and Small, Grassington is a genuinely lovely place to visit, with tons of beautiful pubs, surrounding countryside walks and quaint little shops to potter around. You’ll even be able to see Skeldale House, however, please be respectful as this is private property.
Acting as the famous Drover’s Arms is the traditional Devonshire pub, so be sure to get a photo out front. And surely one of the most recognisable All Creatures Great and Small places to visit.
2. Wheatsheaf Inn in Carperby
While The Wheatsheaf Inn doesn’t have much to do with the series (at least yet!), the beautiful country pub was the real-life honeymoon destination of James and Helen ( Alf Wight and wife Joan).
The pair enjoyed a ‘working honeymoon’ at the rural inn, enjoying the views and the exceptional Yorkshire fare. The Wheatsheaf Inn, Main Street, Carperby, Leyburn, DL8 4DF.
3. Cringley House, Askrigg
Askrigg was the home of the BBC’s original series back in the late 70s and through the 90s, playing Darrowby for the duration of the beloved show’s long run.
But it’s Cringley House , in particular, that fans will likely recognise. The residence acted as the exterior for Skeldale House on the show, where James, Sigfried and co are mostly based throughout the story. Cringley House is now a bed and breakfast, so serious fans of the show can now actually stay there, too. Book a stay here.
4. Skeldale House, 23 Kirkgate in Thirsk
The actual Skeldale House where Alf Wight (James Herriot) worked can be found in Thirsk, the small Yorkshire town where the author and vet lived.
The beautiful listed building remains to this day, and while it’s no longer a veterinary practice, it is a museum dedicated to James Herriot…
5. The World of James Herriot
… It’s pretty easy to spot given that it’s completely emblazoned with ‘Herriot’, and the museum allows guests to step inside and see the residence that once acted as James’ workplace.
The practice has largely been restored to how it was when James worked there, showcasing both his home and work life to fans.
Many of the original furnishings remain, alongside the office, the dispensary, and even a reproduced set from the BBC show. World of James Herriot Ltd, 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 1PL.
6. Langthwaite
True fans may recognise Langthwaite from the opening credits of the BBC series, particularly the bridge by the Red Lion one of the original All Creature Great and Small filming location s .
In the opening scene, James can be seen driving through, before making a splash further down the road from Langthwaite to Low Row.

7. Langhorne House
Another home that has been blessed as Skeldale House over the years, this stunning property in Reeth took on the honour back in the 1970s filming of All Creatures Great and Small .
In Reeth, you’ll find beautiful scenery surrounding the village green, alongside a handful of cafes, an ice cream parlour and a cosy pub.
8. Castle Bolton
While Castle Bolton is quite a beautiful sight to behold in the Yorkshire Dales, it also has a pretty romantic meaning for Alf Wight – since it’s where he proposed to his wife, Joan.
The proposal in the Channel 5 series wasn’t one of the All Creatures Great and Small filming locations, however, it was just as beautiful, overlooking a body of water in the Yorkshire Dales.
9. The Wensleydale Heifer
Well-known for its delicious seafood, The Wensleydale Heifer is said to have been Alf and Joan’s favourite restaurant and even boasts a room inspired by the vet himself. In the cottage-style room, guests can enjoy James Herriot memorabilia, before dining downstairs in his favourite restaurant. The Wensleydale Heifer, Main St, West Witton, Leyburn, DL8 4LS.
10. The Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw
While the exterior of The Drover’s Arms in the new series can be found in Grassington, fans may recognise the interior as that of the Green Dragon Inn, which is famous for having the beautiful Hardraw Force behind it. A pint at the Drover’s, anyone? The Green Dragon Inn, Bellow Hill, Hardraw, Hawes, DL8 3LZ.
11. Broughton Hall
Broughton Hall is no stranger to the small screen – featuring in fellow Yorkshire series Gentleman Jack , too – but in Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small , the lavish Grade I property plays the part of Mrs Pumphrey and her pooch Tricki’s home.
The interiors of the stunning home are also used, which fans will see a fair bit of in series 1. Broughton Hall, Skipton, BD23 3AE.
12. St Mary’s Church, Thirsk
The humble church where Alf and Joan officially said ‘I do’ can be found in Thirsk, just a short walk away from the famous Skeldale House one of our favourite All Creatures Great and Small places to visit.
The traditional wedding was followed by their honeymoon at the Wheatsheaf Inn. St Mary’s Church, Kirkgate, Thirsk, YO7 1PR.
