Midwest USA train rides range from the Great Lakes to the Great Plains

Missouri's Branson Scenic Railway is a popular attraction in the Live Music Capital of the World.

Find a train ride in the Midwest USA…

America’s rail heritage burns bright in the Midwest USA. Thanks to the great 19th century westward migration and the demands for meat and grain back east, Midwest cities like Chicago quickly became national destinations, rail junctions where finance and industry converged and great passenger railroads followed. Today, the vast area sprawling from the Great Lakes to the Plains buzzes with remnant tracks hosting scenic train rides where the aficionado and the curious can sample Midwest railroading as it was in its heyday.

With its “Loop” of “L” lines, Chicago treats urban rail explorers to a unique perspective as its rapid trains dart between landmark towers, scale traffic-jammed avenues, and offer brief glimpses of waterfronts and treetops. Beyond the Loop, check out the Fox River Trolley Museum and catch a streetcar ride along a remnant line that once was a part of Chicagoland’s vast interurban railroad network. The museum is about an hour from the Loop, around the same distance as the country’s largest train museum! The Illinois Railway Museum is a train lovers mashup of rail excursions, streetcar rides, and miles of vintage equipment spread across 100 acres.

Across the Wisconsin state line, the National Railroad Museum picks up where the IRM leaves off. Among its collection are a rare Big Boy locomotive, Gen. Eisenhower’s WWII command train, and one of only two GM Aerotrains in existence. In neighboring Minnesota, the Twin Cities’ Minnesota Streetcar Museum offers opportunities to experience old fashioned streetcar rides on its pair of revival lines.

Several incomparable wilderness train rides also exist. Deep in the woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Tahquamenon Falls Train — aka “Toonerville Trolley” — sets off on the same bear-glimpsing excursions it’s made for nearly a century. Down country, Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway is a full-blown medium-distance hauler that traverses a 50 mi (80 km) route through its namesake national forest.

Many popular Midwest USA vacation and day trip destinations offer easy access to historic and scenic train rides. Two of the region’s most famous resort towns boast namesake train rides aboard Indiana’s French Lick Scenic Railway and Missouri’s Branson Scenic Railway. North Dakota’s Black Hills Central Railroad is a popular side-trip for Mt Rushmore visitors and the state’s Prairie Village is home to the Herman & Milwaukee Railroad.

Of all the Midwest’s “railroad towns,” Duluth, Minnesota has the good fortune of being home to two tourist railroads. That makes it the perfect day trip! The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad’s early day train rides along the Saint Louis River leave plenty of time to catch one of the North Shore Scenic Railroad’s afternoon excursions along Lake Superior.

1. Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park

Take a trip on the Empire Builder from cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Portland and Seattle to experience Glacier National Park and Great Northern Railway history.

Founded in 1889, the Great Northern Railway connected Saint Paul, Minnesota with Seattle, Washington. To increase ridership, the railroad company petitioned the US government to create Glacier National Park, which was near their railroad tracks.

The effort paid off. Glacier National Park was established in 1910, and the railroad company built lodges and chalets that you can still stay in today:

  • 1910 Belton Chalet (next to the West Glacier Station)
  • 1913 Glacier Park Lodge (next to East Glacier Park Station)
  • 1939 Izaak Walton Inn (former railroad employee lodging next to the Essex Station)

The Great Northern Railway also built several lodges inside Glacier National Park (Granite Park Chalet, Lake McDonald Lodge, Many Glacier Hotel and Sperry Chalet), but you’ll need a car to get there. Exit at the Whitefish Amtrak Station for rental cars or to reach an airport .

2. Route 66

Route 66 in Mojave Desert

Amtrak’s Southwest Chief travels near Route 66, the first all-weather road that connected Chicago with Los Angeles. Board the train in Chicago to officially kick of the journey from the start of the highway, but once you are outside of Chicago, the train doesn’t connect with Route 66 again until Las Vegas, New Mexico.

For a trip that’s all along the historic road, start in Albuquerque and travel to Los Angeles. You can also get off the train for one night or more at one of the below Amtrak stations to see Route 66 up close:

  • Las Vegas, New Mexico
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Gallup, New Mexico
  • Winslow, Arizona
  • Flagstaff, Arizona
  • Kingman, Arizona ( Historic Route 66 Museum )
  • Needles, California*
  • Barstow, California*
  • Victorville, California*
  • San Bernardino, California
  • Los Angeles, California

*Westbound trains arrive in these cities after midnight

3. Colorado Rocky Mountains

California Zephyr in Glenwood Canyon

The majestic Colorado Rocky Mountains straddle the Continental Divide and separate the Western US from the Great Plains. The California Zephyr will take you there from cities including Emeryville (near San Francisco), Sacramento, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Omaha and Denver. It’s one of the most scenic Amtrak routes with beautiful views all year long.

If you start the trip in Chicago, you’ll spend a night on the train before reaching the Rockies, but you’ll get to see the massive mountains rise in the distance on the approach.

To experience just the mountain journey, we recommend starting in Denver. From there, you can take a day trip to Salt Lake City, or travel to one of the Amtrak stations in the mountains so you can hike, ski and visit local attractions. See Colorado train trip ideas to learn more.

4. Donner Pass and Lake Tahoe

Donner Lake

If you recall from history class, the Donner Party was a group of pioneers that traveled out west in a wagon train in 1846. They got caught in a blizzard and almost half of them died after spending months next to what is now Donner Lake (pictured above).

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train travels through this area today from cities including Chicago, Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, Sacramento and Emeryville. You can view Donner Lake out the windows along with the Sierra Nevada mountains, which made the last leg of the journey west difficult for many settlers.

To visit Donner Memorial State Park and enjoy outdoor activities at nearby North Lake Tahoe , you’ll need to rent a car. Exit the train in Truckee, California, which is a historic town that was originally built along a wagon road. You can arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to the nearby Enterprise Rent-A-Car office .

With the car, you can choose from many different lodging options in the mountains or near the water. Plan to say at least one night in the area.

5. Old West Towns

Las Vegas, New Mexico

Dodge City, Kansas and Las Vegas, New Mexico (pictured above) are two great places to experience the Wild West on the Southwest Chief route.

In Dodge City, Boot Hill Museum is one of the top attractions to visit, with interactive displays, artifacts and activities that recreate the town’s past. You can also check out the Gunfighers Wax Museum and walk the Dodge City Trail of Fame .

Las Vegas, New Mexico is eight hours away from Dodge City via train and has over 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. It hasn’t changed much since Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, Jesse James and other outlaws walked the streets. Be sure to check out the Plaza Hotel that opened in 1882. Former President Theodore Roosevelt visited here in 1899 as part of a Rough Riders reunion.

Both cities have hotels and downtown districts in walking distance of Amtrak stations. Holiday Inn Express & Suites is closest to the Dodge City Amtrak Station and the Castaneda Hotel , which was formerly a Harvey House for railroad passengers, is closest to the Las Vegas, New Mexico Amtrak Station.

If you’re looking for a flight for the return trip, Albuquerque and Kansas City are the closest Amtrak stops with major airports. To start the trip, you can begin in and near Los Angeles or cities including Chicago and Kansas City.

6. Spanish Missions

Mission San Jose in San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas is just one of many places where you can view historic Spanish missions in the United States. The Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited Amtrak routes stop here, with departures from cities in Texas, as well as Chicago, St. Louis, Little Rock, New Orleans, Tucson and Los Angeles.

The must-visit destinations include The Alamo (also known as Mission San Antonio de Valero ), Mission Concepción , Mission San José  (pictured above), Mission San Juan  and Mission Espada . View the missions trip guide to learn more or plan to go on a guided tour .

After you’ve seen all the sights, you can return home on Amtrak or book a flight out of San Antonio or another major city on the Texas Eagle or Sunset Limited routes. Note that The Alamo is in walking distance of the San Antonio Amtrak Station along with the San Antonio River Walk and several hotels ( Staybridge Suites is closest to the station).

7. Grand Canyon and Flagstaff

Grand Canyon South Rim

For views of an amazing natural wonder, plan a trip to the Grand Canyon via Amtrak’s Southwest Chief . The closest station is Flagstaff, and you’ll need to rent a car (pick up service available during office hours), book a shuttle or go on a tour to reach the Grand Canyon from there.

Perks of renting a car include being able to visit other top area attractions including Walnut Canyon National Monument , Lowell Observatory , Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort .

Even if you don’t rent a car, you can explore Historic Downtown Flagstaff and Route 66 , check out the many art galleries , visit the Clara M. Lovett Art Museum and go on an electric bike tour . Lyft and Uber services are also options for getting around, although all the above activities are walkable if you stay at a hotel or vacation rental downtown.

Tip : Train arrival time in Flagstaff is better if you are traveling west vs east. To travel west, you can start the trip in Chicago, Kansas City or Albuquerque, which all have major airports.

Amtrak Launches Borealis Service from Chicago to St. Paul

A new Amtrak service will soon open more possibilities for travel within the Midwest.

The rail company just announced plans to launch a train service starting May 21, called the Borealis line , which will connect Minneapolis–St. Paul , Minnesota, and Chicago , Illinois.

The service overlaps with the Hiawatha route between Chicago and Milwaukee (operating seven times a day) and the Empire Builder, which connects Chicago and Seattle once daily, with a stop in Minneapolis–St. Paul. Repairs and upgrades to the existing tracks made the second daily service possible for the first time since 1981. Amtrak predicts the Borealis train will see 232,000 passengers within its first year of service, which the Rail Passengers Association estimates will translate to 90,000 fewer people using personal vehicles.

"A second daily passenger rail service connecting St. Paul to Chicago via Milwaukee is a welcome addition to our transportation system, providing more choices and travel flexibility for passengers," Nancy Daubenberger, commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, said in a statement .

The intercity passenger train will operate daily, with one train going in each direction. The eastbound train is scheduled to depart the Twin Cities at 11:50 a.m. and arrive in the Windy City at 7:14 p.m., while the westbound train will start rolling at 11:05 a.m. and come to a halt at 6:29 p.m. At 7 hours and 24 minutes, the journey takes roughly one hour longer than driving between the two metro areas would (without traffic delays).

Coach tickets will start at $41 one-way for adults, while business-class seats start at $98 each way. Discounts are available for children, students, seniors, current and former military personnel and their families, and groups. According to Amtrak, there will be free Wi-Fi on the train, a café car serving regional specialties, and reclining chairs (with no middle seats).

The train will make additional stops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The stops will include Red Wing and Winona in Minnesota; La Crosse, Tomah, Wisconsin Dells, Portage, Columbus, Milwaukee, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, and Sturtevant in Wisconsin; and Glenview, Illinois.

"There were years when it seemed as if this announcement would never take place, and yet here we are today celebrating a new round trip that will transform transportation in this busy corridor," Jim Mathews, president and CEO of advocacy group Rail Passengers Association, stated in a press release. "Passenger trains mean trips that are taken off of highways and out of the sky, saving lives, limiting pollution, and opening up new possibilities. These new trains also mean new trips that would not have otherwise taken place at all, producing direct returns for the communities they serve."

The new service is an example of the types of rail enhancement and expansion projects being supported under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that Congress passed in 2021. And it may be just the beginning of expanded passenger rails within this segment of the Midwest. The proposed Northern Lights Express service, which would connect the Twin Cities and Duluth, Minnesota, is currently being studied , and a proposal for new service from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to the Twin Cities (through Menomonie and Hudson in Wisconsin) also recently won a federal grant for preliminary funding.

Chicagoans will soon have more options for traveling to the Twin Cities without the use of a car.

Amtrak's Latest Sale Has Tickets As Low As $20 — When to Book

The sale ends May 16.

Amtrak is ushering in the start of the warmer season by offering 30 percent off fares as part of its summer flash sale.

The rail company is putting coach and Acela business class seats on sale across the country when purchased by May 16 for travel from June 1 through Aug. 30, Amtrak shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is available on the company’s “flex” fares.

“This Summer Travel Flash Sale provides customers with a unique opportunity to book an affordable trip now that can be enjoyed during the summer months,” Amtrak executive vice president and chief commercial officer Eliot Hamlisch said in a statement shared with T+L. “Whether you’re a current customer or joining us for the first time, Amtrak will make your journey far more convenient and relaxing than navigating through traffic on crowded highways and busy airports.”

There are no blackout dates during the sale, but it is not valid for travel on the Adirondack, Capitol Corridor, Empire Service, Ethan Allen, Keystone, Maple Leaf, Pacific Surfliner, or Pennsylvanian lines, or on markets between Washington, D.C. and Virginia. Amtrak said availability may be limited and may also not be available during busy travel times.

As part of the sale, tickets between Baltimore and Philadelphia start at just $21 each way — or as low as $53 each way in Acela business class — while tickets between Boston and New York start as low as $39 each way.

On the West Coast, travel between Los Angeles and Sacramento starts as low as $60 each way, while travel between Portland and Seattle starts as low as $20 each way.

The sale comes as Amtrak is expanding service between St. Paul, MN, and Chicago this month with a new Borealis train, which will represent a second daily option to travel between the two major cities. It also comes as the company is planning on bringing back and expanding its popular seasonal Berkshire Flyer train between New York City and the Berkshires.

Last year, Amtrak changed its fare structure , introducing two new fare options of “value” and “flex” and eliminating the previous options of “saver,” “value,” and “flexible” fares.

I took my kids on their first Amtrak. Our $336 roundtrip train to NYC had significant delays, but I'd do it again.

  • I took my two kids on the Amtrak for the first time to get from Albany to New York City.
  • Being able to look out the window and walk around during the trip was huge for us.
  • We faced significant delays on the train, but I'd choose the Amtrak over driving in the future.

Insider Today

My husband and I recently traveled with our two kids from Albany to New York City to visit family.

Although we could've hopped in the car, we decided it was the perfect opportunity for our kids to experience their first Amtrak train ride.

With over 30 routes across the country, Amtrak is probably the best-known train company in the US. In 2023 alone, its trains transported over 28 million passengers .

Here's what it was like taking two young children on a 300-mile round-trip train journey across New York and back — and why I'd choose it over sitting in traffic any day.

We experienced delays right away.

amtrak train tours midwest

As we got into the car to leave for the train station , I got a text saying our train was delayed, but that it was unclear how long the delay would be.

We got to the station to find a big crowd and learned that the train scheduled before ours hadn't even left yet.

I immediately worried that my first train trip with the kids would be a travel nightmare . I was surprised and relieved to find that the staff was professional and forthcoming with information.

We passed the time exploring the station and buying snacks and were en route exactly an hour late.

Once we boarded and set off, my kids loved looking out the window.

The trip from Albany to NYC features views of rivers and small towns along the way.

The kids loved looking out the window and pointing things out to each other. It served as entertainment and helped pass the time.

Being able to move around was a big help.

amtrak train tours midwest

Our Amtrak train featured a few four-seater sections, where pairs of seats faced one another. This gave my kids an area to stand up and wiggle around in, which really helped them stay comfortable.

Plus, my little one was small enough that she could stretch out and get comfortable when she needed a rest.

In the car, we would've had to stop for plenty of bathroom breaks, especially for our recently potty-trained 3-year-old.

Luckily there was a bathroom on the train, which was a huge benefit. Walking there and back was a nice way to break up the trip.

The kids felt totally welcome on the train.

amtrak train tours midwest

My kids were pretty well-behaved on the trip, but you never know what it's going to be like traveling with little ones .

Surprisingly, I didn't worry once that they were being too disruptive just by existing — the way I've felt on planes before.

Our fellow passengers were kind to my kids, too. One even shared some snacks with them.

We didn’t arrive at our destination with the usual “stuck in the car” energy.

amtrak train tours midwest

When we have a long drive, there's always a period after the trip where my kids are full of built-up, restless energy from being cooped up.

Arriving in the city on the train was very different. Everyone was energetic and happy, and we got right on the NYC subway without any outbursts.

We experienced significant delays in both directions, but I’d still do the train again.

amtrak train tours midwest

When it was time to return to Albany, we also had about an hour's delay. Although delays in both directions led to some unpredictability, so does traffic on road trips.

Overall, the train's benefits outweighed its unpredictability. We'll definitely take the Amtrak again.

Cleveland: a Target of Rail Competitors?

Amtrak and Brightline may be poised to compete for routes — and real estate — in Ohio. Could other states end up in the same position soon?

At top, a Brightline train departs Miami Central Station for Orlando while, at bottom, an Amtrak train departs Chicago Union Station for Milwaukee. The 79-125 mph Brightline train, one of 16 per day in each direction, is supported by revenues from station-area developments. The 79 mph Amtrak train, one of eight in each direction, is sponsored by the states of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Editor's Note: A version of this article originally appeared on NEOTrans and is republished with permission. We thought it was a fascinating example of what may prove an emerging trend across the country: private rail operators competing with Amtrak for new routes.

Last week, two things happened in the rail world that are probably related. They have been brewing in the background for a while, but they finally appeared in public almost simultaneously. Federal corporation Amtrak and private-sector company Brightline showed their hands that they may compete for Ohio passenger rail expansions and real estate developments. And Cleveland may end up the winner.

First: Amtrak revealed in its fiscal year 2025 budget request to Congress that it wants a five-year, $300 million Great Lakes Station development program. Amtrak specified it wants to enhance stations between Cleveland and Chicago, starting with $25 million next year for environmental permitting and blueprints. In Cleveland, Amtrak is working with community officials to plan for a multimodal transportation hub on downtown’s lakefront.

The program will allow Amtrak to partner with communities to build infrastructure necessary so trains can board passengers from either side of Norfolk Southern’s (NS) two main tracks. Not only will that reduce delays to NS’s 70 daily freight trains from Amtrak no longer having to slalom between them to board passengers at single-platform stations, it will also speed up Amtrak’s four nightly passenger trains — and allow for daytime expansion.

Nearly 2,000 miles away in Las Vegas, NV, meanwhile, dignitaries pounded in yellow spikes into a section of track,  commemorating the start of construction  of Brightline’s $12 billion, 200-mph high-speed rail line linking Sin City to Greater Los Angeles, namely Rancho Cucamonga.

amtrak train tours midwest

Immediately after the ceremony, Brightline Founder/CEO Wes Edens and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg  were asked by Forbes reporter Alan Ohnsman  to discuss the economic benefits of adding high-speed rail to a 270-mile route that’s too long to comfortably drive and too short for airlines to economically serve. The resultant increased travel, consumer spending and the construction plus permanent jobs may be significant. But that’s not all.

“It’s going to open up the floodgates for American expectations around high speed rail,” Buttigieg said. “It won’t anymore be ‘I just got back from Japan — why can’t we have that?’ It’ll be ‘I just got back from Vegas — why can’t we have that in the Midwest or the Northwest or wherever I live as a domestic tourist in the United States?’ This is important because it establishes it can be done here. Which, by the way, of course it can done here. This is the United States of America. But in the past we haven’t invested enough to make this happen.”

But where in the USA could the next copycat emerge? Edens was asked by Ohnsman about that. He discussed several regions of the country he was considering. Edens mentioned the Texas Triangle — Dallas-Houston-San Antonio/Austin. In the Pacific Northwest, he pointed to Seattle-Portland. And in the Midwest, there was a route on the tip of Edens’ tongue.

“In the Midwest you have places like from Cleveland to Columbus and whatnot,” he said.

The “whatnot” hopefully refers to continuing the 3C&D route connecting Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton to link four of Ohio’s largest metro areas in 255 miles, as has been considered for a long time. Several other routes have also been pursued before and are being considered again now.

amtrak train tours midwest

But one of the hangups for Ohio’s elected leaders was the Amtrak approach, which under federal law requires a state government to take the initiative — make the capital improvements to tracks, stations and acquire railcars, then purchase passenger rail service from Amtrak to run the trains. Ohio has been unwilling, saying it doesn’t want to build and operate a passenger rail system.

Such was the case in Florida too. Which, like Ohio, the Sunshine State gave back federal money during the Obama Administration. In fact, it gave back more — $2.4 billion for high-speed rail between Orlando and Tampa. Ohio gave back $400 million for 79 mph Amtrak trains linking 3C&D, plus planning money to speed it up to 110 mph. Brightline offered a political solution palatable to Florida, one that might work in Ohio: “We’ll finance it, build it, and operate it. We just need some highway rights of way and station funding.”

NEOtrans has learned from a source familiar with Brightline’s goals that company officials are interested in more than just 3C&D. They’re also very interested in Chicago-Fort Wayne-Columbus. And several years ago, the company issued a national map of potential routes of interest to Brightline. Among them was an upside-down T, three-routes-in-one matrix of Cleveland-Chicago, Cleveland-Detroit and Detroit-Chicago with Toledo as the hub.

In summary, Edens says he is looking for routes with population centers at both ends connected by an underutilized but well-engineered railroad right of way that can accommodate train speeds of up to 110 mph. Or, if demand warrants, they’ll pursue a relatively flat highway with gentle curves and a median or an undeveloped flank where a high-speed railroad can be built to offer speeds anywhere from 125 to 200 mph.

These assets came into play for Brightline’s first route linking downtowns in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach with Orlando International Airport. In a few years, construction could start on an extension to Tampa using the median of Interstate 4. Brightline wouldn’t have to grade a right of way or construct roadway overpasses and it could get a good property deal from the Florida Department of Transportation like it did  alongside Highway 528  from Cocoa to Orlando.

amtrak train tours midwest

Edens was inspired by reading about Henry Flagler who joined John D. Rockefeller and Samuel Andrews in Cleveland in 1867 to form Standard Oil. But Flagler is perhaps best known as the founder of the Florida East Coast Railroad which also developed resorts, hotels and other real estate along its tracks. That offered a politically palatable solution for Florida to support it today.

Edens is applying modern railroad-real estate synergies with Brightline, owned by Florida East Coast Industries which also develops and owns real estate. That includes 2 million square feet of residential and commercial high-rises at Brightline stations with more planned. All are owned by Fortress Investment Group of which Edens is co-CEO with Peter Briger. Historically, real estate and transportation have had a strong, synergistic relationship.

In Downtown Miami, Brightline built  a new Central Station  topped by three high-rises and served by the MetroRail rapid transit along with the free-to-ride MetroMover downtown automated people mover. At the other end, the state of Florida funded a new terminal at Orlando International Airport for Brightline trains, an extension of the airport people mover and 19 airplane gates. Miami-Orlando trains carry 8,000 riders per day and growing.

In Las Vegas, Brightline acquired 110 acres of land near Harry Reid International Airport for a train station/real estate development. Near Victorville, CA, it acquired 300 acres for a station and development that could accommodate a link to the California High Speed Rail that’s under construction to the Bay Area. Stations will also be located at Hesperia and Rancho Cucamonga. Brightline’s high-speed tracks will be built in the median of Interstate 15.

“We’ve been contacted by a lot of different governors and whatnot that are curious about this,” Edens said. “I think today (LA-Las Vegas groundbreaking) is a real milestone to see that this is a reality that is now happening. I think there could easily be a handful of these that could turn into real projects from our standpoint in the next 12 to 24 months. It’s an exciting time for us.”

amtrak train tours midwest

The 12-24 months comment likely refers to the time necessary to conduct Service Development Plans for more than two dozen routes to which the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded funds in December 2023.  Four Ohio travel corridors were among them  — Cleveland-Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati, Cleveland-Toledo-Detroit, Pittsburgh-Columbus-Fort Wayne-Chicago, and New York-Washington-Cincinnati-Chicago.

“For those who say this isn’t Europe, that’s true — it isn’t Europe,” Buttigieg said. “We’re doing this on American terms. What we definitely have in America are these kinds of geographic layouts where you’ve got lots of city pairs that are an uncomfortably long drive or an inefficiently short flight apart from each other. Those are excellent candidates for high-speed rail.”

Service Development Plans are the first in a series of increasingly detailed planning steps to identify the best paths for linking city pairs and later, to conduct detailed design and environmental permitting for those paths. Ohio has a mix of underutilized railroad rights of way and highway medians Brightline could affordably lease or acquire to gain hundreds of miles of routes with the stroke of a pen.

Without spending big to get to Downtown Cleveland, Chicago and 3C&D trains could terminate at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, as Brightline does at Orlando’s airport and will do near Las Vegas’ airport. Cleveland’s airport has something they don’t — a rapid transit rail link to the region’s two largest employment centers, Downtown Cleveland and University Circle.

At Brightline’s Florida speeds, Clevelanders could travel to Columbus in 100 minutes, to Detroit in 2 hours and 15 minutes, Cincinnati in three and a half hours and downtown Chicago in four and a half hours. Travelers will enjoy stations and trains that are modern, clean and bright with creature comforts, has at-seat charging ports, tasty food and beverages, strong/free Wi-Fi and first-class accommodations. And the employees are customer-focused.

amtrak train tours midwest

Boarding at a site on the east side of Cleveland’s airport could soon be accompanied by a major mixed-use residential and entertainment district. That’s where Cleveland Browns owner, the Haslam Sports Group, is considering building  a domed stadium and hundreds of thousands of square feet  of high-rise residential, hotels, retail and restaurants.

Brightline CEO Edens also is the majority owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. The basketball team’s minority owner is the Haslam Sports Group. Perhaps Edens is already chatting up the Haslams about his ideas?

Those billionaires can do what Amtrak legally cannot — lobby elected officials. Much of public policy is driven by campaign contributions. So while Amtrak is promoting a worthy cause of improving train stations along its Northern Ohio route, possibly to get ahead of Brightline, Brightline may roll out the gravy train in Columbus to pass Amtrak on the fast track to Ohio.

It should be noted that both companies’ efforts aren’t mutually exclusive and can simultaneously serve some different communities and travel markets. And if both vie for the chance to invest along their routes, in this competition, Cleveland could well end up the winner.

He also provided consulting services to transportation agencies, real estate firms, port authorities and nonprofit organizations.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
