All 6 Movies Where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Is In The Jungle

All 30 dwayne johnson action movies ranked worst to best, dwayne "the rock" johnson’s franchises ranked worst to best.

  • Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon was canceled due to difficulty in writing the script and Dwayne Johnson's busy schedule.
  • The franchise struggled to find a solid script after the success of the second movie, but it may have been for the best considering the lack of fanbase.
  • Dwayne Johnson's recent projects have stuck to the familiar tone of the Journey movies, offering audiences similar all-ages adventures.

While the franchise appeared to be riding high after the success of the second movie, Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon was ultimately canceled and Journey 3 is officially not happening, The series launched with 2008’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth , which was based on the famous novel by Jules Verne and starred Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. Reviewers found the movie gimmicky due to its use of 3D but it was a solid hit for the studio. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island adapted another Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island with Dwayne Johnson replacing Brendan Fraser as the main protagonist.

Journey 2 was an even bigger hit than the original, with reviews praising the inclusion of Johnson as the franchise's new leading man . Journey 3 was soon confirmed by the studio, which would adapt Verne’s From The Earth To The Moon , which was initially also going to be filmed alongside Journey 4 . During this era, Johnson made his debut in the Fast and Furious franchise as well as joining 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation , cementing his reputation as an actor who could turn around struggling franchises. However, his powers failed to work further on the Journey series as Journey 3 stalled and has since been canceled.

Dwayne Johnson has an impressive resume of many unique movies, however, his career does include one strange trend: movies taking place in the jungle.

Journey 3 Proved Too Hard To Write

Dwayne johnson's busy schedule also caused delays to the journey 2 sequel.

It appears Dwayne Johnson’s hectic workload and focus on other projects when Journey 3 & 4 were still being planned kept pushing them back. Almost nothing was heard about Journey 3 from 2015 to 2018 when Johnson confirmed Journey 3 was canceled because they couldn’t crack the script. This wasn’t much of a shock, considering it had been six years since Journey 2 by that point and there had been little sign of movement on the project. Following the gigantic success of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Johnson moved his attention to that family-friendly adventure franchise with a similar tone which has already become more successful.

In the same way The Mummy star Brendan Fraser was replaced by Dwayne Johnson, the studio could have brought on a new lead actor for Journey 3. However, further recasting would not help the franchise losing both Johnson and Fraser. While the first two movies were fun adventures, Journey wasn’t a franchise that had a burning fanbase either, so it’s easy to see how it fell between the cracks. Johnson’s admission they had trouble coming up with a solid script indicates it might be a good thing Journey 3 didn’t ultimately move ahead too.

Director Brad Peyton and Johnson reteamed again for 2018’s video game adaptation Rampage , and while San Andreas 2 was planned, that feels like another sequel that got lost in the shuffle of Dwayne Johnson’s franchise-heavy schedule. It’s disappointing Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon didn’t come together, but audiences will have plenty of other Dwayne Johnson movies in the future to make up for it.

The Rock is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood who has starred in 30 action movies in just over 20 years, and here they are, worst to best.

The Movies Journey Fans Can See Dwayne Johnson In Instead

Johnson's recent projects have stuck to the familiar tone of the journey movies.

Sadly for Journey fans, the past few years have brought with them no signs that Journey 3 might be back on Dwayne Johnson's upcoming slate. Even with the lackluster performance of Black Adam in the DCU , The Rock has kept busy, with Jungle Cruise in particular honoring the spirit of the Journey franchise. Johnson also starred in Netflix's action/comedy Red Notice alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. He's also set to star in Jake Kasdan's holiday adventure film Red One alongside Chris Evans in 2024. These movies all capture that all-ages adventure that was achieved in the first Journey movies and that Johnson has stuck to in recent years.

With Disney's Jungle Cruise likely to kick off another franchise for The Rock, which Dwayne Johnson movie series is best so far?

The Rock Entered The DCEU Twice In 1 Year

Could johnson's failed move into the superhero genre help journey 3.

The multi-talented Dwayne Johnson also broke new ground in 2022 by making his debut in the superhero genre. Johnson actually joined the DCU twice over in the same year with both Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets . He plays the titular villain/anti-hero in the former movie, and in the latter, he voices Superman's pet, Krypto the Superdog . The animated DC League of Super-Pets continued to deliver the family-friendly mix of humor and adventure Johnson has gravitated towards, particularly because Johnson was joined by one of his most consistent and hilarious co-stars, Kevin Hart, who voices Ace the Bat-Hound.

Black Adam , on the other hand, was a much darker film. Black Adam's DC Comics origin is a gruesome one, and the character mainly appears as an antagonist to Shazam and Superman, although Dwayne Johnson's film shifted that narrative somewhat focusing on Black Adam as a standalone character. This move into the DCU proved unsuccessful with Black Adam sequels already being nixed, the Superman cameo becoming awkward after Henry Cavill's recasting , and the box-office failure of Shazam!: Fury of the Gods . Perhaps this setback will cause Johnson to rethink Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon .

Did you know?

The Latin adjective diurnus means “pertaining to a day, daily”; English diurnal stems ultimately from this word. When Latin developed into French, diurnus became a noun, jour, meaning simply “day” The medieval French derivative journee meant either “day” or “something done during the day,” such as work or travel. Middle English borrowed journee as journey in both senses, but only the sense “a day’s travel” survived into modern usage. In modern English, journey now refers to a trip without regard to the amount of time it takes. The verb journey developed from the noun and is first attested in the 14th century.

More About Journey

What does  journey mean.

A journey is a trip, especially one to a faraway place that takes place over a long period of time.

The word trip can refer to any instance of traveling from one place to another, no matter how long or short it is. The word journey , though, typically implies a long trip—one that’s at least several hours, and perhaps several months or even years. It also often implies adventure—a journey might even be a quest . A journey may or may not have a planned destination other than whatever lies ahead.

The word is also commonly used in a figurative way to liken any lengthy process or progress to such a trip, as in Life is a journey, with many interesting detours.

Journey can also be used as a verb meaning to make a long trip, as in We must journey to the land beyond the mountains.

Example: My favorite books are about people who make epic journeys around the world.

Where does  journey come from?

The first records of the word journey come from around the 1200s. It comes from the Middle English word journee , meaning “day,” ultimately from unattested Vulgar Latin diurnāta , meaning “a day’s time” or “a day’s work.” In English, the meaning of the word journey originally meant something like “a day’s travel,” but eventually came to mean “a long trip.”

A journey can last a day but the word usually refers to longer trips. The word is sometimes preceded with the mode of transportation that’s used, as in The city is reachable only by a long train journey. Discussion of journeys often involves their destination or purpose. When people say, “It’s the journey , not the destination,” they mean that the significance and value of a journey is what happens along the way, from moment to moment, as opposed to the achievement of its ultimate goal.

Discord has become an unlikely center for the generative AI boom

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

In the video, a crowd is roaring at a packed summer music festival. As a beat starts playing over the speakers, the performer finally walks on stage: it’s the Joker. Clad in his red suit, green hair and signature face paint, the Joker pumps his fist and dances across the stage, hopping down a runway to get even closer to his sea of fans. When it’s time to start rapping, the Joker flexes his knees and propels himself off the ground, bouncing up and down before doing a 360 turn on one foot. It looks effortless, and yet if you attempted the maneuver, you’d fall flat on your face. The Joker has never been this cool.

Then there’s another video, where NBA All-Star Joel Embiid struts out from backstage to greet the crowd before nailing those same dance moves. Then, it’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David . But in each of these scenes, something is a bit off – whether it’s the Joker, Joel Embiid or Larry David, the performer’s body is shaky, while their facial expressions never change.

Of course, this is all AI-generated, thanks to a company called Viggle .

The original video shows the rapper Lil Yachty taking the stage at the Summer Smash Festival in 2021 – according to the title of a YouTube video with over 6.5 million views, this entrance is “ the HARDEST walk out EVER. ” This turned into a trending meme format in April, as people inserted their favorite celebrities – or their favorite villains , like Sam Bankman-Fried – into the video of Lil Yachty taking the stage.

https://twitter.com/Dexerto/status/1777877550976421967

Text-to-video AI offerings are getting scarily good, but you can’t type “sam bankman-fried as lil yachty at the 2021 summer smash” and expect Sora to know precisely what you mean. Viggle works differently.

On Viggle’s Discord server, users upload a video of someone doing some sort of movement – often a TikTok dance – and a photo of a person. Then, Viggle creates a video of that person replicating the movements from the video. It’s obvious that these videos aren’t real, though they’re still entertaining. But after the Lil Yachty meme went viral, Viggle got hot, and the hype hasn’t subsided.

“We’re focusing on building what we call the controllable video generation model,” Viggle founder Hang Chu told TechCrunch. “When we generate content, we want to control precisely how the character moves, or how the scene looks. But the current tools only focus on the text-to-video side, where the text itself is not sufficient to specify all the visual subtlety.”

According to Chu, Viggle has two main types of users – while some people are making memes, others are using the product as a tool in the production process for game design and VFX.

“For example, a team of animation engineers could take some concept designs and quickly turn them into rough, but quick animation assets,” Chu said. “The whole purpose is to see how they look and feel in the rough sketch of the final plan. This usually takes days, or even weeks for them to manually set up, but with Viggle, this can basically be done instantly and automatically. This saves tons of tedious, repetitive modeling work.”

In March, Viggle’s Discord had a few thousand members. By mid-May, there were 1.8 million members, and with June just days away, Viggle’s server has climbed to over 3 million members. That makes it larger than the servers for games like Valorant and Genshin Impact combined.

Viggle’s growth shows no sign of slowing down, except that the high demand for video generation has made wait times a bit too long for impatient users. But since Viggle is so Discord-centric, Discord’s developer team has worked directly with Viggle to guide the two-year-old startup through its speedy growth.

Fortunately for Viggle, Discord has been through this before. MidJourney, which also operates on Discord, has 20.3 million members on its server, making it the largest single community on the platform. Overall, Discord has about 200 million monthly users.

“No one’s ready for that type of growth, so in that virality stage, we start to work with them, because they’re not ready,” Discord’s VP of Product Ben Shanken told TechCrunch. “We have to be ready, because a huge part of the messages being sent right now are Viggle and MidJourney, and a lot of consumption and usage on Discord is actually generative AI.”

For startups like Viggle and MidJourney, building their apps on Discord means that they don’t have to build out a whole platform for their users – instead, they’re hosted on a platform that already has a tech-savvy audience, as well as built-in content moderation tools. For Viggle, which has just fifteen employees, the support of Discord is crucial.

“We can focus on building the model as the backend service, while Discord can utilize their infrastructure on the front end, and basically we can iterate faster,” Chu said.

Before Viggle, Chu was an AI researcher at Autodesk, a 3D tools giant. He also did research for companies like Facebook, Nvidia and Google.

For Discord, acting as an accidental SaaS company for AI startups could come at a cost. On one hand, these apps bring a new audience to Discord, and they’re probably good for user metrics. But hosting so much video can be difficult and costly on the tech side, especially when other users across the platform are streaming live video games, video chatting and voice calling. Without a platform like Discord, though, these startups might not be able to grow at the same rate.

“It’s not easy for any type of company to scale, but Discord is built for that type of scale, and we’re able to help them absorb that pretty well,” Shanken said.

While these companies can just adopt Discord’s own content guidelines and use its content moderation apps, it will always be a challenge to make sure that 3 million people are behaving. Even those Lil Yachty walk-out memes technically violate Viggle’s rules, which encourage users to avoid generating images of real people – including celebrities – without their consent.

For now, Viggle’s saving grace could be that its output isn’t one hundred percent realistic yet. The tech is truly impressive, but we know better. That janky Joker animation definitely isn’t real, but it sure is funny.

Ohio billionaire Larry Connor to take $20 million submersible to 'Titanic-level depths'

another to journey

Larry Connor, a Dayton entrepreneur , will soon embark on another groundbreaking exploration.

Connor, founder and managing partner of  The Connor Group , a real estate company based in Dayton, plans to take a deep-sea submersible to "Titanic-level depths" to prove that the personal-sub industry is safe. According to The Wall Street Journal, this announcement comes in the wake of the OceanGate vessel that imploded last year, killing five passengers, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

“I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,” Connor told The Wall Street Journal.

Connor, known for his explorations to the Mariana Trench and International Space Station , will reportedly travel with Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Lahey. The duo will plunge to the ocean's depths in a Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, a two-person submersible listed on the company’s website for $20 million. The “4000” represents how deep the sub can dive in meters, per the national news site. The Titanic sits at 3,800 meters.

“Patrick has been thinking about and designing this for over a decade. But we didn’t have the materials and technology,” Connor adds. “You couldn’t have built this sub five years ago.”

The New York Post reports that Connor and Lahey are embarking on this journey to prove that it can be done "without disaster," especially following the implosion of the Titan submersible last year. The Titan vanished during an attempted dive to explore the remains of the Titanic site on June 18. Nearly five days later, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that a debris field had been discovered near the Titanic,  likely the result of a catastrophic implosion.

“He called me up and said, ‘You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that and that Titan was a contraption," Lahey said.

Connor did not say when the voyage would likely take place.

Another US military MQ-9 Reaper drone goes down in Yemen, images purportedly show

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Another U.S. military MQ-9 Reaper drone went down in Yemen, images online purported to show Wednesday, as Yemen’s Houthi rebels continued attacks on shipping around the Red Sea over the Israel-Hamas war .

It wasn’t immediately clear what brought down the drone, but the U.S. military’s Central Command acknowledged seeing “reports” of the aircraft being downed in a desert region of Yemen’s central Marib province. It marked potentially the third such downing this month alone.

Images published online and analyzed by The Associated Press showed the MQ-9 on its belly in the barren desert, its tail assembly disconnected from their rest of its body. At least one hatch on the drone appeared to have been opened after it landed there, though the drone remained broadly intact without any clear blast damage. One image included Wednesday’s date.

Authorities in Marib, which remains held by allies of Yemen’s exiled government, did not immediately acknowledge the drone. Nor did the Houthis, who previously have shot down MQ-9 drones during the war.

Located 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of Sanaa, Marib sits on the edge of the Arabian Peninsula’s Empty Quarter Desert at the foot of the Sarawat Mountains running along the Red Sea. The province has seen U.S. drones previously brought down there, in part because the region remains crucial for the outcome of Yemen’s yearslong war .

Since Yemen’s civil war started in 2014, when the Houthis seized most of the country’s north and its capital of Sanaa, the U.S. military has lost at least five drones to the rebels. This month alone, there’s been two others suspected shootdowns of Reapers that the American military hasn’t confirmed.

Reapers cost around $30 million apiece. They can fly at altitudes up to 50,000 feet (about 15,000 meters) and have an endurance of up to 24 hours before needing to land.

The Houthis in recent months have stepped up attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, demanding that Israel end the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians there. The war began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking some 250 hostage.

The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration.

Shipping through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has declined because of the threat.

On Wednesday, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree acknowledged the rebels attacked the bulk carrier Laax on Tuesday . Saree also claimed a number of other attacks on vessels that have not reported assaults without offering any evidence to support his claim. Saree in the past has exaggerated Houthi attacks.

‘Dropping Very Dramatically’: What Deadly Turbulence Did to a Flight

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 was a rare instance of turbulence resulting in a death.

Video player loading

By Sui-Lee Wee and Muktita Suhartono

Reporting from Bangkok

The seatbelt sign came on moments after the plane started shaking, but, for some, it was too late.

“Whoever wasn’t buckled down, they were just launched into the air within the cabin,” said Dzafran Azmir, who was among the 211 passengers on board the London-to-Singapore flight that encountered deadly turbulence on Tuesday. “Within an instant, they hit the ceiling of the cabin and dropped right back onto the floor.”

The plane, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300 ER, had taken off from London’s Heathrow Airport on Monday night, about 10 hours earlier. It was about three-quarters full. Many of the travelers were Singaporeans returning home. Some were students studying in England. Others were families and some who had planned a “holiday of a lifetime” to far-flung destinations like Australia.

The bulk of the 13-hour journey of flight SQ321 was over, and many passengers had finished their last meal onboard, a breakfast that these days has been a choice between an omelet with cream cheese or stir-fried Asian noodles, both served with a side of fresh fruit.

By this time, the plane had reached the Bay of Bengal, which sits between the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Some pilots consider the region “notorious” this time of the year because its monsoon rains can cause turbulence.

But commercial pilots know how to prepare for such scenarios. They rely on weather radar and carry extra fuel so they can fly around and wait for the weather to ease, if needed. Or they follow the course charted by other planes that recently have passed through the area and have warned air traffic controllers about weather upheavals.

One scenario that is impossible to prepare for is when the skies are clear and the plane’s radar does not detect anything amiss. This phenomenon is known as clear air turbulence.

“It could be the plane just starts shaking, we turn on the seatbelt sign, but, unknowingly, we fall into the clear air turbulence zone,” said Captain Teerawat Angkasakulkiat, president of the Thai Pilots Association. “It’s totally unpredictable.”

A plane emblazoned with the words Star Alliance sits on a tarmac at an airport.

It’s unclear what happened next with SQ321, but there had been thunderstorms near its flight path. As it was flying over Myanmar, cruising at 37,000 feet above the southern section of the country’s biggest river, the Irrawaddy, it hit what the airline later described as “sudden extreme turbulence.”

For the next three to five minutes, the plane shook violently, said Mr. Dzafran, 28, a university student heading home to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, who was buckled into a window seat in row 52.

“Then it built up, like a feeling of going up a roller coaster, up the crest, and suddenly dropping very dramatically,” he recalled.

His bag, stored under the seat in front of him, flew across the plane, and his phone was flung across the aisle. The woman sitting in the row in front of Mr. Dzafran hit her head so hard on the plastic seatbelt indicator sign above her that it broke. Oxygen masks dropped down from the overhead panel. The person behind him hit a seat. Mr. Dzafran was unharmed, but the other two passengers had bloody gashes on their heads.

At least one passenger, it appeared, was able to react quickly enough and buckle her seatbelt. It was a woman sitting behind Mr. Dzafran.

“That was miraculous luck on her side to respond so quickly,” he said.

Another passenger, Teandra Tukhunen, who was sleeping, was not able to react as fast. She was awakened by the turbulence and saw the seatbelt sign come on, but she had no time to fasten it and was thrown to the ceiling, then to the floor, Ms. Tukhunen, 30, a native of Australia, told Sky News from a hospital in Bangkok, her arm in a sling.

Elsewhere on the plane, people started crying and screaming out in pain. The whiplash was so furious that one passenger said that it appeared as if those who had been walking around on the plane were doing somersaults. Dozens of people, including some crew members, were injured.

As things settled down, it was clear that one of the worst affected passengers was a male traveler, Geoff Kitchen. A grandfather of two who ran a local theater group in the town of Thornbury in southwest England, Mr. Kitchen, 73, had planned a six-week “holiday of a lifetime” to Australia and Southeast Asia with his wife of 50 years, Linda.

Andrew Davies, who was sitting in front of Mr. Kitchen, helped carry him out of his seat and laid him on the floor, where he was given C.P.R. for at least 20 minutes.

With the plane now in Thailand’s airspace, the pilot placed a distress call to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, asking to make an emergency landing. Then he made an in-flight announcement about the new destination, and asked for anyone who was medically trained to help passengers with injuries.

Forty-five minutes after the ordeal began, Mr. Dzafran said, the plane landed. It was 3.45 p.m. local time.

Several ambulances with flashing lights were standing by. The passengers waited patiently while nurses, emergency medical workers and doctors rushed in to treat the critically injured first. A total of 83 people were injured. Twenty of them were sent to the intensive care unit of a local hospital.

Drew Kessler, the New York-based treasurer of Rotary International who was en route to Singapore for the annual Rotary International Convention, said he had broken his neck while his wife, Vicki, had broken her back.

As Mr. Dzafran prepared to disembark, the crew told passengers to avoid one of the aisles. Mr. Dzafran said he thinks he saw someone lying on the floor. Flight attendants near the business and first class zones were bleeding. Food was strewn across the galleys.

The passengers, dazed and confused, boarded a bus from the tarmac and arrived to a holding area inside the Bangkok airport. Conversations were struck up. A fellow passenger told Mr. Dzafran that someone had died on the plane and showed Mr. Dzafran an online news article. It was Mr. Kitchen. He was the only fatality — one of the few ever blamed on turbulence — and the cause of death hasn’t been released yet.

Singapore Airlines has apologized for the episode, and its investigators have arrived in Bangkok to try to understand what happened.

Mr. Dzafran was among the 143 passengers who emerged unscathed. So was his seatmate, who he said also had her seatbelt on.

Oh No! Yet Another Billionaire Plans to Visit the Titanic Wreck

R emember when OceanGate's Titan submersible imploded mid-journey to the Titanic wreckage last year , killing five people aboard including at least one billionaire ?

The spectacular accident has seemingly failed to deter a different wealthy person from risking life and limb to get to the Titanic. Ohio real estate billionaire Larry Connor told The Wall Street Journal that he plans to journey to the underwater wreck — but this time in an advanced two-person submersible that is supposedly safer and more reliable than the janky Titan, which was never certified for safety and used experimental materials like carbon fiber in its hull.

"I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way," Connor told the WSJ .

Days after the Titan implosion, Connor called up Patrick Lahey, CEO of Triton Submarines — which the WSJ described as "one of the leading makers of personal submersibles."

"We had a client, a wonderful man," Lahey told the WSJ , describing Connor. "He called me up and said, 'You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption.'"

Stare Into the Abyss

There's still no word when the mission will take place. Triton Submarines is developing a $20 million submersible called the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer , which is billed on the company's website as being able to go on repeated dives of more than 13,000 feet in depth. (The Titanic wreckage is at 12,500 feet underwater .)

"Patrick has been thinking about and designing this for over a decade," Connor told the WSJ . "But we didn’t have the materials and technology. You couldn’t have built this sub five years ago."

Unlike the Titan submersible, which was shaped like a cylinder and was controlled with a video game controller , the Triton appears far better equipped, featuring advanced controls and gull wings that help with maneuvering — at least according to early renderings.

The company has yet to announce when it will start going on sea voyages. But we imagine Lahey and Connor will put this sea vessel through the wringer, given the Titan's demise.

Randall Langston, the University of New Orleans’ new vice president for enrollment management, wants to help “demystify” the collegiate journey for students by providing academic support that begins prior to admission and extends beyond graduation.

“A big part of what I see myself and enrollment management doing is helping clear obstacles for students, whether it be financial or emotional,” Langston said. “We have to look at ways to be able to promote student success. Student success is at the core of everything we do.”

Langston, who arrived on campus in early May, is just a few weeks into his stint of leading the new re-envisioned Division of Enrollment Management, which includes Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Registrar, and Veterans Services.

He comes to UNO with 25 years of experience as a senior enrollment management leader, predominantly at public institutions, with a record of increasing enrollment, leveraging financial aid and developing staff. Langston has previously served as senior associate vice president for enrollment management at the University of Southern Mississippi, executive vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Central Missouri and vice president for enrollment management at Texas Woman’s University. He has also worked as a consultant, providing guidance and planning in strategic enrollment management to colleges and universities.

Langston, who grew up in southwest Houston and attended Sam Houston State University as an undergraduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He thought law school was his next step but felt drawn to academia.

He always had a proclivity for mathematics, and a friend suggested that Langston explore a career in college admissions, he said.

“I was able to blend both of what my passions were: student success and then also the ability to integrate empirical mathematics,” Langston said about his work in admissions.

What attracted him to academia and specifically enrollment management is having the chance to make a difference in young people’s lives, Langston said.

“That means opening doors for students,” he said. “I believe that college opens doors and provides access for students. I don’t think there is anything more important than gaining an education and then being able to go into the world and work.”

The other attraction, Langston said, is being able to help students navigate the sometimes-unfamiliar collegiate terrain. He calls it “deciphering and demystifying.”

“I fully subscribe to the ‘It takes a village’ approach,” Langston said. “It’s everyone working in tandem to impact students in a positive way and help them matriculate and, ultimately, graduate from the university.”

With student success as a driving principle, Langston says his overall enrollment management strategy involves:

  • Collaboration, communication and partnership between enrollment management and campus constituencies
  • The use of data driven/data informed strategies
  • Initiatives that promote inclusive excellence and belonging
  • Comprehensive marketing strategies which promote institutional visibility for prospective students and other external audiences

“We are dealing with a lot of headwinds at this point, everything from lower birthrates to inflation to the enrollment cliff,” Langston said. “Our strength is all of us coming together, supporting one another collaboratively and in partnership to do the important work for the students we serve.”

Langston sees enrollment management as a circle. It begins with gaining the interest of prospective students—possibly as early as their sophomore year in high school—and then shepherding them through to graduation and becoming involved alumni.

“It’s a life cycle and in order to be successful, we have to eliminate silos, come together to support one another and market and promote the institution aggressively,” Langston said. “I think that UNO has a great story to tell, and I want people to know just how great a place this is to be.”
