Lisbon and Porto may get a lot of love, but there's so much more to Portugal than its captivating historic cities.

From  golden beaches  and mountainous peaks to lush river valleys, every region has its own diverse highlights across this small Iberian nation.

Finding the best places to go here depends largely on your own interests. If you’re after sun-kissed beaches and aquatic adventures, head to the Algarve ; for historic architecture-filled towns with a rich, traditional dining scene , aim for Évora. Start planning your itinerary now with our 11 favorite places to visit in Portugal.

Best for nightlife

Seven iconic hills overlook  Lisbon 's postcard-perfect panorama of cobbled alleyways, white-domed cathedrals and grand civic squares – a captivating scene crafted over centuries.

The Portuguese capital is packed with things to do , from browsing galleries (including the Museu Nacional do Azulejo with its trove of ceramic tiles) and exploring castles (such as the hilltop  Castelo de São Jorge ) to satisfying your sweet tooth with the city's incredible  pastéis de nata  (custard tarts).

By night, Lisbon’s party people take over, filling old-school drinking dens, brassy jazz clubs and open-all-night clubs that burst into life once the sun goes down.

Planning tip: Lisbon has an emerging craft beer scene that you can experience at the city's breweries and bars .

2. douro valley .

Best place to drink wine

One of Portugal’s most beautiful areas lies just east of Porto. Here, the meandering Rio Douro flows past towering hillsides covered by the steeply terraced vineyards that make up Europe’s oldest demarcated wine region. Whether you come by boat, train or car to the Douro Valley , you’ll be rewarded with astonishing views at every turn, especially as you near the lovely village of Pinhão in the heart of the region.

Planning tip:  Many travelers dash in on a quick day trip, but to make the most of the region, spend the night at one of the vineyard-surrounded guesthouses in the area, such as Quinta Nova or the Casa Cimeira .

An aerial view of the medieval houses, wall and tower of Obidos, Portugal. The street is filled with crowds of people.

Best hilltop village

Wandering the tangle of ancient streets in the historic town of  Óbidos is enchanting at any time of year, but come during one of its festivals and you're in for a special treat. Whether you fancy the idea of a mock-up jousting match at a medieval fair or delving into the written word at Folio – Portugal's biggest international literature festival – you couldn’t ask for a better backdrop.

Best for a fantastical escape

Less than an hour by train from the capital Lisbon,  Sintra feels like another world. It's a great day trip away from the city hubbub. Like a setting from a fairy tale, this historic hillside township is sprinkled with stone-walled taverns and lorded over by a  multicolored palace .

Forested hillsides form the backdrop to this storybook setting, with imposing castles, mystical gardens, strange mansions and centuries-old monasteries hidden among the trees. The fog that sweeps in by night adds another layer of mystery.

Planning tip:  Chilly evenings are best spent by the fire in one of Sintra’s many charming B&Bs.

5. Setúbal Peninsula

Best for wild, cliff-backed beaches

South of Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula has long been the weekend playground of Lisboetas (Lisbon residents). A ferry ride, followed by a short bus or bicycle ride, takes you to the Costa da Caparica, a seemingly endless beachfront that gets wilder and less crowded the further south you go. If you want a surf lesson, some downtime on the sands, or a meal overlooking the lapping waves, this is the place to come.

If you’re seeking a bit more solitude, head down to the Parque Natural da Arrábida at the southern end of the peninsula. Here, you'll find cliffs covered with thick vegetation, picturesque coves and beaches such as Praia do Portinho da Arrábida, with fine sand, azure waters, and the ruins of an ancient site that dates back to Roman times.

Street view of the Historic Centre of Evora, Portugal. The street is narrow and lined by stalls, selling their wares outside.

Best for historical architecture

The heart of the Alentejo region, Évora is one of Portugal’s most beautifully preserved medieval towns, and it's an enchanting place to spend a couple of days. Inside the 14th-century walls, narrow, winding lanes lead to striking monuments, including an elaborate medieval cathedral, Roman ruins and a picturesque town square.

But this isn't a musty museum piece – Évora is also a lively university town, and its many restaurants serve up some excellent, hearty Alentejan cuisine.

Best for urban exploring

It would be hard to dream up a more romantic city than  Porto . Portugal’s second-largest urban center is laced with narrow pedestrian lanes, baroque churches and cafe-dotted plazas, leading the eye down to the Douro River and its landmark bridges. Needless to say, there's no shortage of  great experiences here . Start in the  Ribeira district – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – then cross the bridge to explore centuries-old port wineries in  Vila Nova de Gaia , where you can sip the world’s best port.

You can also learn about Porto’s history (both the drink and the city) and other facets of Portuguese identity at the World of Wine , a sprawling complex of museums, restaurants and bars overlooking the city. Though Porto is defined by its air of dignified history, modern architecture, cosmopolitan dining, vibrant nightlife and artistic activity are injecting new life into the city.

8. The Minho

Best for traditional villages and wilderness trails

The Portuguese have a special fondness for the Minho , a verdant region of vineyard-covered valleys, mountainous wilds, isolated beaches and picturesque river towns that seem little changed by time. The gateway to the region is Braga , a city with Roman ruins, a fabled medieval cathedral , and tranquil flower-trimmed plazas sprinkled with outdoor cafes and restaurants.

Further north, you’ll find Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês , a vast, rugged wilderness of dramatic peaks, meandering streams and frozen-in-time stone villages. Dozens of hiking trails crisscross the reserve, taking walkers past old Roman roads, castle ruins or sparkling waterfalls.

Planning tip:  If you're here in summer, cool down in the idyllic swimming holes – these are among the best places to be in Portugal during the hot weather.

Best for a student vibe

Portugal’s most atmospheric college town,  Coimbra , rises steeply from the Rio Mondego, and its handsome medieval quarter houses one of Europe’s oldest universities. Students roam the narrow streets clad in black capes, while the sound of fado (Portugal’s soulful traditional style of music) drifts through the Moorish town gates towards the stained-glass windows of the historic  Café Santa Cruz .

Planning tip:  Grown-ups may well appreciate the town’s student-driven nightlife and the medieval lanes of the steeply stacked historic center. Visitors with younger kids can keep busy at Portugal dos Pequenitos , a theme park with miniature versions of Portuguese monuments.

10. Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela

Best for hiking and alpine activities in winter

The Serra da Estrela – Portugal’s  highest mountain range – is the place to come for rugged scenery, outdoor adventures, and glimpses of a vanishing traditional way of life. Hikers can choose from an expansive network of high-country trails with stupendous vistas, and the region's fascinating mountain villages make perfect bases for outdoor adventures.

At the country’s highest point – the summit of Torre, artificially pushed to 2000m (6561ft) by the addition of a not-so-subtle stone monument – you can slalom down Portugal’s only ski slope. Oh, and did we mention the furry sheepdog puppies that frolic by the roadside? You’ll long to take one home.

11. The Algarve

Best for a relaxing family holiday

Sunseekers have much to celebrate in Portugal. Along the south coast, the Algarve is famed for its gorgeous and varied coastline – you can either join the crowds on the people-packed sands at major resorts or find seaside peace on dramatic wild beaches backed by wind-carved cliffs. Days are spent playing in the waves, taking long oceanfront strolls, or surfing some of Europe's most memorable breaks.

The Algarve is also one of the best places in Portugal for kids . You’ll find family-friendly beaches, water parks and plenty of outdoor adventures (from boating to hidden sea caves to exploring undeveloped islands).

Planning tip:  There’s never a bad time to visit this region, with its 300 days of sunshine each year, though you’ll find the best prices and thinnest crowds in winter.

Algarve Portugal

The 8 best places to visit in Portugal

There’s so much more to Portugal than its two main cities. Get to know the country’s seven stunning regions

Sure,  Lisbon  and  Porto are great n’ all (no really, they are really great), but  Portugal is one of the world’s hottest travel destinations for a reason, and there’s so much more to it then its two main cities. Whether you’re looking for wild parties or wild nature; historic hill towns or sun-scorched beaches; hip bars or rural escapes, you’ll find it in abundance across Portugal’s seven regions – five on the mainland, plus the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores .

And then there’s the food, which goes well beyond piri-piri chicken and pastéis de nata (although let’s face it, these should be on your list). Each of the country’s surprisingly diverse regions takes pride in its unique culinary offerings, from super-fresh seafood and slow-cooked stews to cakes, pastries and cheeses. And did we mention the vinho ? Across the country, wine is impossibly good and dangerously affordable.  There’s a whole lot to discover, so read on for the full lowdown on the best places in Portugal.

The best Portuguese regions to visit

Northern Portugal

1.  Northern Portugal

Visit for: Stunning natural landscapes and world-famous wines

Northern Portugal is renowned for its friendly inhabitants and their love of a good party. Tourists rarely venture far beyond the ridiculously picturesque city of Porto  (and its equally good-looking sister city of Vila Nova de  Gaia on the opposite bank of the Douro), but northern Portugal is also home to the country’s only national park: the wildly beautiful Peneda-Gerês , where wolves roam and villages are carved from ancient stone.

The region is also home to historic cities packed with stunning Baroque architecture – there are particularly fine examples in beautiful Braga and in Guimarães , the city known as ‘the birthplace of Portugal – and gloriously unspoiled river beaches such as the pine-flanked sands of the Praia Fluvial da Lomba, on the banks of the Douro in Gondomar .

Then there are the verdant terraced hills of the Douro wine region, where the Douro International Natural Park further contributes to making this one of the most beautiful and diverse regions in the country – or indeed, the whole of Europe .

Central Portugal

2.  Central Portugal

Visit for: Fairytale villages and blissful river beaches set at the foot of snow-capped mountains

Refreshingly untroubled by mass tourism, Central Portugal is a treat for adventurous travellers. You can goggle at the monster waves of Nazaré (and the highly-skilled surfers who dare to tackle them), master your own technique at the lively surf town of Peniche , or tackle hilly hiking and cycling trails between schist stone villages where hearty fare like suckling pig and sugary cakes replenish all that spent energy.

Here you’ll find Portugal’s highest peaks – the UNESCO Geopark Serra da Estrela sees enough snow in winter to merit its own ski resort – and the gorgeous, forest-flanked river beaches of the interior make a crowd-free alternative to the lively sandy strips dotted along the 174 miles of coastline. Wine lovers, meanwhile, will revel in the robust reds and citrusy whites of the Dão region.

Urban adventurers have plenty to enjoy too:  c enturies-old religious buildings sit alongside buzzing bars and cafes in the handsome university city of Coimbra , while Aveiro (the self-proclaimed ‘Venice of Portugal’) is always impressive with its art nouveau architecture and brightly-painted canal boats.

Lisbon

3.  Lisbon

Visit for: Buzzing city life, sandy stretches and a vibrant surf scene

Portugal’s famously sunny capital, Lisbon requires little introduction – its status as one of Europe’s hottest city destinations is richly deserved. But undiscovered treasures still lie among the hipster hubs and Segway-packed streets: you can s pend a day spotting street art in the maze of streets that make up historic Alfama , seek out the hidden Chinese restaurants ( C hinês clandestinos ) operating from family apartments in the multicultural Martim Moniz neighbourhood, and fill up on huge plates at tiny tascas like Merendinho do Arco .

And if you’ve had enough of city life, you’re never more than a short bus or train ride away from glorious beaches and wild nature reserves.  Hop on a train along the coastline to the popular beach towns of Cascais and Estoril and the adventurous terrain of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park ; cross the river Tagus for the white sand, turquoise waters and pine-covered mountains of Serra da Arrabida , or take an hour-long bus ride to Ericeira – Europe’s first and only World Surf Reserve – for a laidback vibe and beachy lodgings like You and the Sea and Immerso .

📍 The best  things to do in Lisbon

Porto

4.  Porto

Visit for: A seriously good food scene

Named by us as the best city break in Europe for 2024 , it’s safe to say Porto is one of our absolute faves. And why wouldn’t it be? This city is bursting with great food, galleries, museums and more, and as a bonus, it’s super affordable too.

Sample some seriously good white port (our favourite way is via a Porto tonic; white port, tonic water and a wedge of lemon), buy enough tinned fish for a year’s worth of date nights and people watch at the Douro river.

The best part? A new Time Out Market is set to open this year in Porto, so you can try all our favourite restaurants under one roof. Porto is a classic for a reason.

📍 The most romantic hotels in Porto

Alentejo

5.  Alentejo

Visit for: Sleepy traditional villages, fine food and wine, and celeb beach hangouts

Stretching south of Lisbon towards the Algarve, the sun-blessed Alentejo region (the name comes from the words ‘além Tejo’, or ‘beyond the Tejo’) has been quietly carving a reputation for itself as Portugal’s most chic beach destination. High-end boutique hotels offer ‘barefoot luxury’ lodgings in fashion-press favourites Comporta and neighbouring Melides , and the wines produced here are increasingly well regarded internationally.

Exclusive beach hangouts aside, this is one of Portugal’s most traditional and least-explored destinations. There are plenty of charming towns to visit, from historic villages like the medieval Monsaraz to slow-paced fishing spots like Vila Nova de Milfontes .  The pretty fishing town of Porto Covo marks the start of the dramatically beautiful Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentin Natural Park , which sweeps for 60 miles down to the Algarve and is notable for its surf beaches and multi-hued cliff faces.

Then there’s the region’s highly attractive capital,  Évora :  as notable for its food scene as its Roman temple and hauntingly impressive Chapel of Bones.

Algarve

6.  Algarve

Visit for: Glorious beaches and picture-perfect fishing villages

Don’t let reports of hordes of lager-swigging ‘Brits abroad’ put you off visiting Portugal’s sunniest region. Not only does the Algarve have a reliably warm climate and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, but it’s also home to sleepy whitewashed villages – each one seemingly even prettier and more packed with local charm than the last – and all easily reached by a scenic rail journey.

Fresh fish, seafood (and yes, that famously spicy piri-piri chicken) dominate the dining scene, and visitors would be well advised to give the pub grub a body swerve in favour of the local tascas , where you’ll be served a proper feast and a carafe of house wine for a fraction of the price of a fry up and pint of Guinness.

If you’re looking for a big city buzz, you’ll find it in Faro , the region’s lively capital. Want something lively but a little more laid-back? Join the surfer communities of watersports hotspots like Lagos and Sagres .

Madeira

7.  Madeira

Visit for: Warm waters, jaw-dropping views and year-round sunshine

Nobody has ever accused Cristiano Ronaldo of hiding his light under a bushel, and the football legend’s home turf of Madeira really goes the extra mile in celebrating the success of its most famous son – even the airport in the regional capital Funchal is named in his honour. More of a Messi fan? You can bypass the Ronaldo museum, Ronaldo statue, and CR7 hotel, and just revel in Madeira’s breathtaking terraced mountains, sunny sub-tropical climate, year-round warm waters, and vibrantly-hued flowers.

An hour’s flight from the mainland, this archipelago in the North Atlantic is one of Portugal’s two Autonomous Regions. Its volcanic geography makes it a top destination for adventure sports enthusiasts: its towering peaks host a a spectacular Sky Race ultramarathon, featuring 34 miles of gruelling ascents and daring descents across 4,000 metres of elevation.

Mere mortals can bypass the running and enjoy the thrills and spills of Funchal ’s toboggan run: whizzing down city streets in wicker baskets for a mile of fast-paced twists and turns. Finish off your adventures with a glass of  poncha : the island’s  boozy, fruity punch.

Azores

8.  Azores

Visit for: Outdoor adventures, relaxing retreats and a chance to explore wild, untamed nature

An increased number of budget flights have brought tourist traffic to the weather-beaten Azores , but the nine-island archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean remains relatively under the radar.

Each of the islands has its own character, from the sandy beaches and mild climate of Santa Maria  to the volcanic lakes and thermal springs of São Miguel . The Portuguese-owned islands are the perfect place to take a mindful break at destinations like Lava Homes , a wellness-focused ‘village’ carved from volcanic rock on Pico .

The islands are also increasingly talked about among foodies: in particular, the cheeses are a must-try, such as the sharp queijo da ilha from São Jorge , and the mild, creamy queijo vaquinha from Terceira . The Azores’ unique volcanic wines are something to savour too; visitors can find out about the fascinating production process (and taste the resulting wines) at Biscoitos Wine Museum on Terceira .

One of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, Leiria takes pride in its quiet charm and authenticity. Its main calling card are its shopping centres , which can be found in the city’s two main squares, Rodriguez Lobo and Sant’Ana.

Situated along the eastern border with Spain within the Serra da Estrela mountains, Guarda is the highest city in Iberia, a distinction it shares with its Spanish counterpart, the city of Avila.

Due to its geography, Guarda was historically a crucial city for Portugal’s defence against Spain. Some of the old fortifications can still be seen, with medieval walls tracing the edges of the city.

Within the centre of Guarda is a cathedral designed in Gothic and Manueline style, as well as an ancient Jewish district (Judiaria) which retains much of the 14th century ambiance.

The convent Moneteiro de Jesus is the city’s most famous landmark. It served as the residence of Joanna, Princess of Portugal, who served as regent in her father’s absence. Joanna, who was beatified by the Catholic Church, is laid to rest in the convent.

Nearby is the Aveiro Museum, which is housed in an old convent of the Dominican Order and offers an extensive collection of religious art on display.

Much of the city’s famous architecture dates back to this period, especially in the Praça da Republica, the central square. Buildings of note include the Paços do Concelho (Town Hall) and Sé Catedral de Santa Maria Major.

Viana do Castelo has a modern flavour as well, its newer buildings and neighbourhoods having been designed by many of Portugal’s most famous contemporary architects. Due to this, Viana is considered to be a ‘Mecca of Architecture’ in Portugal.

Adjacent to the cathedral is the Chapel of Kings, which holds the tombs of Henrique and Theresa, Count and Countess of Portugal and parents of Portugal’s first king Alfonso.

Holy Week ( Semana Santa ) is perhaps the best time of year to visit Braga, when elaborate ceremonies and processions commemorating the death and rebirth of Christ are held on the city’s cobbled streets.

Porto’s historic core, Ribeira, was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and contains dozens of treasures. One day in Porto is enough for the highlights: Climb the Clérigos Tower for a view, sip coffee in a historic cafe , sample the city’s finest export, Port wine, then step out of the city limits to the nearby Douro Valley, one of Europe’s finest wine regions .

Don’t miss the sunset at Morro Garden overlooking the Dom Luís bridge.

Viseu also has a strong connection with the Portuguese monarchy, serving as the main court of Count Henrique and Theresa, parents of the first king of Portugal Alfonso I, who may have been born here.

Vasco Fernandes, one of Portugal’s most famous Renaissance painters, was also born in Viseu. The Grão Vasco Museum is home to many of his works. The city has a great deal of religious art between the Viseu Cathedral and the Religious Art Museum found on the second floor.

The port city of Ponta Delgada is the largest city and executive capital of the Azores , the Portuguese archipelago off the coast of Morocco . Ponta Delgada grew exponentially in the 19th century as a major commercial and maritime centre.

Central to the city’s identity is its connection to the Portuguese navy. Along the Harbour Front is the 16th century Forte de São Brás which is still used by Portugal’s navy. The fort is home to the Azores Military Museum.

Elsewhere in the city is the Convent and Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Esperança, which is notable for its religious art and annual celebration of Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.

Get there: Fly from Lisbon (2.5 hours). Where to stay: Garoupas Inn . Top-rated city tour: Ponta Delgada Historical Walking Tour .

Flowering trees in front of a historic facade in Faro, one of the best cities in Portugal to visit.

Faro is the capital of the Algarve, the country’s southernmost region (excluding the islands), and the best city in Portugal for accessing the country’s top beaches . Faro is a resilient city, having endured raids from English privateers in the 16th century, as well as a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 1755.

Today, Faro is perhaps most notable for its airport, yet the city itself has much to offer. The main plaza, Largo da Sé, features whitewashed buildings, cobbled roads, and an ancient cathedral.

Along the coastline is the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa with saltwater lagoons and tranquil waters which can be explored by kayak.

Get there: Fly into Faro Airport or train from Lisbon (4 hours). Where to stay: Lemon Tree Stay . Top-rated city tour: Cultural Faro 90-Minute Segway Tour .

14. Santarém

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Santarem, Portugal.

Along the River Tagus is the old town of Santarém, which served as a royal residence and fortress. Relics of that past are scattered throughout the city, although most of the old buildings were destroyed by two earthquakes in 1531 and 1775.

An archaeological museum preserves the city’s historic roots, with artefacts dating back to Roman and Moorish periods. Other sites include the Seminary, a former Jesuit college, and the remains of an old Franciscan monastery from the Burgundian period.

Santarém today is renowned for agriculture. It is the location of a ten-day fair at the beginning of June which assembles the agricultural prowess of the Ribatejo area in central Portugal.

Get there: Drive from Lisbon (1 hour). Where to stay: Chalet Santa Iria .

15. Castelo Branco

Statues line a stone staircase at The Garden of the Episcopal Palace in Castelo Branco.

Located in Central Portugal, Castelo Branco has an unforgiving climate and endures some of the hottest summers in the country. But don’t let that dissuade you from visiting: In spring and fall, this historic small city is well worth the drive.

The city’s walls and castle, its namesake, were built by none other than the Templar Knights. The Jardim do Paço Episcopal (Garden of the Episcopal Palace) in Castelo Branco is considered the most beautiful Renaissance-Baroque gardens in Portugal.

Cool relief from the scorching city can be found as you explore the royal and astrological statues set amongst ponds, terraced gardens and stately staircases.

Get there: Drive from Lisbon or Porto (2.5-3 hours). Where to stay: Casa de Perais .

5 must-visit cities in Portugal

Whether you're looking to dance, surf, or sightsee, there's a portuguese city for you..

Reade Tilley

Though it’s only the size of Indiana, Portugal’s cultural riches run deep. While nearly every city is worth seeing, we’ve chosen five of our favorites that travelers on short trips should read about and consider visiting. Boa viagem !

Best time to visit: In general, the period between June and September offers the best weather across Portugal, but it also sees the most visitors. Steer clear of the second half of August when, as in much of Europe, many businesses in the country shut down for vacation. Instead, book a trip for shoulder season for fewer crowds and equally lovely weather in May or October.

If you only can visit one city: Lisbon

Belém Tower in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon has a little bit of everything. Start your visit in the historic Belém district of Europe’s sunniest capital city, where you can grab a coffee and sample the famous pastéis de nata (egg custard tarts) at the place said to have invented it: Pasteis de Belém . Check out the Torre de Belém while you’re there, an architecturally magnificent 16th-century tower at the mouth of the Tagus River . When it comes to more recent art, Lisbon is famous for graffiti, with artists such as Vhils achieving international acclaim. To see the best the city has to offer, join one of Lisbon Street Art Tours walking tours. From there, dive into the country’s music at the Fado Museum , located in the popular Alfama district, or stop by iconic fado restaurants like Café Luso , set in a 17th-century home, or the more low-key Povo . After the sun sets, the dining, clubs, and live music in the Bairro Alto will keep you going until the morning. During your night out, stop at Pink Street for a fun photo op.

If you want to dance the night away: Coimbra

Not necessarily circled on most tourist maps, this town nonetheless has plenty to offer thanks to its university and excellent nightlife options. If you’re after traditional Fado music, try the intimate but casual Bar Diligência or head to A Capella, set in a former church that was built in 1364. Bar Quebra Costas is the spot for jazz—but not the quiet kind. The place gets packed, with patrons filling the streets and surrounding the musicians, who play in the center of the action. For rock lovers it’s Noites Longas, a club that hosts some wild nights, while the quieter crowd should head to Fangas Veg , a tiny artsy bar, or to the much larger Galeria Santa Clara , a chilled spot after sundown (it’s a tea house during the day). The also-chill Feito Conceito showcases DJs, Praxis is the spot for beer lovers, and Pinga Amor, well, it’s for everyone. If all else fails, simply stop a student in the street and ask where the party’s happening. With so many bars and clubs on offer, it’s hard to go wrong.

If you're a history or art buff: Porto

Douro River in Porto, Portugal

Straddling the Douro River , Portugal’s second largest city (and the home of port, a fortified wine) has roughly 900 years of history and is rich with medieval and Romanesque architecture. It’s also home to the Serralves Museum , the country’s best place to see contemporary art. More art can be found within the city’s avante-garde scene, which includes the Fernando Santos Gallery, the Portuguese Photography Centre (housed in a former prison), and the Nuno Centeno Gallery , a key showcase for emerging artists. Real Companhia Velha is the authority on local wine (it’s the oldest wine company in the country, founded in 1756) and offers tastings and tours. Gourmands should travel to nearby Mastosinhos to enjoy Casa de Chá da Boa Nova , a two-Michelin-starred restaurant from Chef Rui Paula that’s perched among the rocks, with window-filled walls that open to the sea. Those in search of sand can hit Praia dos Ingleses, a top beach for sunbathing, swimming, and people-watching, with plenty of cafés and shops as well.

If you want to surf: Ericeira

Portugal is known for great waves, and there is perhaps no better place to access them than in Ericeira . Just 30-odd miles from Lisbon, it’s an easy beach escape and a town completely committed to the sea—which is widely visible from the charming town center. It’s also a World Surfing Reserve, meaning many of the surf breaks are officially protected. Beginners should head to Foz do Lizandro , with its sandy ocean floor and mild conditions. Praia do Sul is another option, which is also good for intermediates, though there’s a reef break here that’s better suited to advanced surfers (talk to a lifeguard before heading out). For experts, Coxos is often called the best wave in the area, reaching up to 10 feet and throwing huge barrels thanks to a powerful right-hand reef break. The months between April and October see milder conditions across all breaks, while the big stuff happens in winter. Conditions in spring aren’t ideal, but smaller, inconsistent surf might be worth the gamble, as early April brings the Sea Urchin Festival, during which top restaurants showcase their takes on the spiny delicacy. It's a tasty tradeoff.

If you just want to relax: Lagos

Praia do Camilo, Lagos, Portugal

Wherever you go in the Algarve region will have golden beaches, watersports, golf, and great nightlife—the region is hands-down Portugal’s go-to resort area. But the beaches in Lagos seem to rise above the rest, in more ways than one. Cliffs and rock formations protect the beaches from the wind, making them some of the most tranquil and photogenic beaches in the country. Try Praia do Camilo , Ponta da Piedade , or Meia Praia , then hit O Camilo , a family-owned seafood restaurant. Call ahead and secure a table by the windows or on the terrace. For casual (but excellent) tapas, head to Jukebox, while Avenida at the Hotel Avenida offers a more upscale experience after cocktails at the hotel’s rooftop bar. For a deep dive on the area, the Museu Municipal Dr. José Formosinho tells an unbelievably comprehensive story, located adjacent to the Igreja de Santo António, a stunning church and Portuguese National Monument. Show up on June 13 for the only service held here each year, which celebrates the church’s patron saint.

The 15 prettiest places in Portugal

By Anna Prendergast

The 15 prettiest places in Portugal

A friend once cycled through Portugal , and on his return explained the allure of taking the long way round: ‘There are long stretches of nothing – but then you get to where you’re going, and it’s worth every mile of wondering if you’re completely lost’. From Sagres’s secret surf scene in the south to Alentejo’s underrated wine country, there’s more to Portugal than Lisbon (although, what a capital it is). With its Atlantic coast and Mediterranean climate, the country is scrappier than Spain and wilder than France – its charm is in its reluctance to be too polished, and Portugal’s prettiest places are raw, real, natural. After all, once something is too shiny, it simply presents a reflection of the familiar rather than its beautiful, authentic self. Here are the fifteen prettiest places in Portugal that are worth every mile in between.

The prettiest places in Portugal

Arguably one of the country's finest stretches of Atlantic coast Comportas sandy beach goes on for almost 40 miles...

Comporta's Coast

Arguably one of the country's finest stretches of Atlantic coast, Comporta ’s sandy beach goes on (and on, and on…) for almost 40 miles, which means there’s space to spare, even when Lisbonites head here for long weekends and wellness retreats. Its shallower, most family-friendly waters are in the northern Tróia peninsula and there’s surfing towards the southern end at Praia do Carvalhal. Try horseback riding along the shoreline with Cavalos na Areia, one of the smartest stables in the area, then position yourself outside Sal restaurant for service at your daybed, and easy access to one of the best places to eat on the beach.

How to get there There are no direct flights to Comporta, so you'll most likely land in Lisbon, from which there are two ways to get to Comporta. The first option is to rent a car or book a transfer from the airport, which will take you directly to your hotel or Airbnb. The second route is to rent a car and drive to Setúbal to take the 25-minute ferry to  Tróia  (with your car). Once arriving on land, you have another 15-minute drive to Comporta.

Monsanto, Castelo Branco

If you like the idea of Benagil for its geology (and not just its photo ops), but your itinerary is taking you to the north, head to medieval Monsanto instead, where the village is built into giant stone boulders that look like they might roll down the narrow streets clinging to the mountaintop any second. Because of its elevation and terracotta rooftops, this also happens to be a stunning spot for sunsets – Taverna Lusitana has the best tables.

How to get there The easiest way to get to Monsanto is by renting a car and parking either in the small lot within Monsanto or parking in the more extensive car park in Relva, about a 1km walk. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Lisbon's Sete Rios station to Monsanto-Relva. Occasionally, taxis can transfer you from Relva to Monsanto, but availability is not guaranteed.

Douro Valley Vineyards

Novelist José Saramago called this northern region the eighth wonder of the world , and there’s something undeniably hypnotic about the visual ASMR of Porto ’s terraced topography. The wine region’s winding waterway slices through the green landscape, which you can take in from a gentle river cruise or from the window of Six Senses’ first European resort or the Vintage House Hotel in Pinhão.

How to get there It is possible to get to the Douro Valley from both Porto and Lisbon. It's true, the easiest way to access the Douro Valley is to drive or book a private transfer, but there are public transport options. If your travelling from Lisbon, the best route is to take the train from Santa Apolónia Station to Porto. Once in Porto, you’ll need to take an urban train towards the Douro Valley town of Peso da Régua. Alternatively, there are direct buses via Redes Expressos to the Douro Valley from Lisbon and Porto.

Park near Praia do Carvalho instead of Benagil beach which can get overcrowded and rent a standup paddleboard to...

Benagile Caves, Algarve

Park near Praia do Carvalho – instead of Benagil beach, which can get overcrowded – and rent a stand-up paddleboard to access the weather-worn limestone-layered Benagil Sea Cave (currents are strong, so swimming from beach to beach isn’t recommended). Pools of sunshine stream through the natural skylight, but the shade cast by the rock formation provides relief from Portugal ’s intense heat, which can creep into the 40s in peak summer season.

How to get there Renting a car or booking a transfer to Praia do Carvalho is best. It is about 3 hours away from Lisbon and an hour from Faro. You can either park at Urbanização Clube Atlântico or along the cliffs lining the beach.

Some say King Ferdinand II designed the palaces in Sintra to rival Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria; others say it was a romantic gesture for his lover, Elise Hensler. The Parque da Pena that surround the castle is filled with rare species of roses and non-native plants – locals believe he would instruct sailors and servants to bring back seeds and flowers to plant just for her. The colourful turrets, curved cupola and chemin de ronde walkways seem to be wrapped in fondant icing in shades of ochre and red, and there are gargoyles, traditional azulejos and acres of history to explore.

How to get there We recommend taking a 40 minutes train from Lisbon to Sintra. There is a direct route from Rossio train station in Lisbon to Sintra, with trains running every hour.

With its heatwaves, vineyards, Roman architecture and cobbled squares, the Alentejo ’s hottest city attracts travellers seeking culture, food and climate all in one place. Originally due to open in 2020, Evora Farm Hotel is finally slated to launch in June 2021 with 57 bedrooms and 25 private villas, finished with a mash-up of country design (raw wood, glossy granite, leather chesterfields) and Mediterranean touches – wicker lamps, azulejo ceramics – making it the perfect basecamp for Evora explorers.

How to get there You can take a train or bus to get to Évora from Lisbon. The trains leave from Santa Apolónia, and Gare do Oriente in Parque das Nações, both taking about one hour and thirty minutes. Rede Expressos has regular departures from Sete Rios Bus Terminal if you'd prefer the bus.

Praia De Odeceixe, Costa Vincentina

Straddling the region between the Algarve and Alentejo, this cliffside, thumbprint-shaped beach – which is also the mouth of the River Seixe – is one of the south’s best-kept secrets. It is part of a National Park , so its unspoilt quality makes it a spectacular place to finish a hike along the Rota Vicentina trails and celebrate with a cold beer at Bar da Praia. At low tide, there are rock pools for playing and shallows for paddling, and while the water on the riverside is calm and gentle, there are decent surfable waves on the oceanside too.

How to get there Renting a car or booking a transfer to Praia De Odeceixe is easiest. However, there is a weekday bus that operates between Lagos and Odeceixe. There is also a Rede Expressos bus from Lisbon directly to the village centre, but you still need a car transfer to the beaches.

Alentejo's Sunflower Fields

In summer, six-foot sunflowers bloom in their hundreds in Alentejo, the lesser-known region whose natural beauty is starting to draw holiday-makers and hotel owners alike. Drive south from Cuba towards Aljustrel and keep your eyes peeled for jars of raw girassol honey made by local beekeepers, plus stop and inhale the fragrant fields of lavender, cork oak, olives and wheat (but do be mindful these are farmers' crops, not just photo backdrops).

How to get there You have to drive by car to see Alentejo's sunflower fields as the highway south from Cuba, Portugal, towards Aljustrel is where you'll see the beautiful sunflowers.

The Islets of the Azores

Less than a mile off São Miguel is the islet of Vila Franca do Campo, a volcanic crater surrounded by underwater caves and the Atlantic’s (often icy) waters, and connected by a small channel called a boquete . The only inhabitants of the nature reserve are sea birds such as little egrets and Bulwer’s petrels, so fishing and camping are not allowed (and there are no facilities), but the clear lagoon is perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving – pack a wetsuit, plenty of water and a few pastéis de nata for when you emerge salty lipped and sun-kissed.

How to get there It is best to fly into João Paulo II Airport (PDL) at Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores' largest island, São Miguel. There are ferry routes and flights between the various islands.

About an hour outside of Lisbon , Obidos is a walled hilltop town with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. Stay at eco design hotel Rio do Prado , which in May 2021 started welcoming diners to its brand new restaurant The Market Man, a greenhouse that grows more than 2,000 plants to be used in its rural recipes. Head to Bar Ibn Errik Rex to try ginjinha , a local liqueur made from Morello cherries, and take a wander round the city walls (not necessarily in that order – the walls reach up to 43ft and some don’t have handrails).

How to get there It's easiest to catch a bus to Obidos. The Rodotejo express buses depart from Campo Verde station and take about one hour to Obidos.

The city’s traditional boats and criss-crossing canals often draw comparisons to Venice , but you won’t get the hordes of visitors or sinking-city melancholy here. Instead, the moliceiro vessels’ painted prows, the town’s Art Nouveau façades and Costa Nova’s brightly striped beach huts are colourful reminders of the area’s history. Eschew the obligatory Portuguese custard tarts for local ovos moles de Aveiro , which are shaped like shells and have protected status (much like Champagne, they can only be named as such if they come from this region).

How to get there There are direct train routes from Lisboa-Oriente to Aveiro, with the journey taking about two to three hours. If you travel from Porto, you can take a nonstop train from Campanhã Station to Porto.

Ilha Deserta

Brush up on your tide tables and escape the Algarve’s tourists by taking a boat from Faro to Ilha Deserta, which on a quiet day feels like your very own private island – or oversized sand dune. In March 2021, seafood restaurant Estaminé, the only structure on the island, burnt down in a freak fire, but plans are on track to have it up and running again by summer 2021, so guests can dig their fingers into bowls of boat-fresh prawns once again before spending an afternoon in the clear, warm water, spotting purple swamphen or collecting seashells.

How to get there Ilha Deserta is only accessibly by a ferry or speedboat shuttle, which departs from Faro's Cais das Portas do Mar.

Berlengas Islands

A few miles off Peniche’s rocky peninsula is a UNESCO-protected nature reserve in the form of the Berlengas Islands archipelago, where conditions are ideal for scuba diving – good visibility, calm waters, plenty of wildlife . On board your boat, spot dolphins from the deck, and underwater come face to fin with elusive John Dory fish, octopus, manta ray, nudibranch and giant sunfish among shipwrecks and caves on a fertile volcanic seabed.

How to get there There is unfortunately no direct connection from Lisbon to the Berlengas Islands. However, you can take the bus from Lisboa Sete Rios to Peniche. From there, you must walk to the Peniche Bus Station and take the bus to Campo da Feira where you can walk to Peniche Port to take the ferry to Berlengas Islands.

Serra Da Estrela Natural Park

Paragliding, trekking and mountain biking are popular in Portugal, but not many know you can ski here too – Serra da Estrela’s National Park includes a small resort just a few hours from Lisbon. February is the best time for snow cover, but the mountainous terrain also offers landscapes blanketed in wildflowers and glassy lakes year-round, including Covão dos Conchos, which has an artificial spillway that looks (and acts) like a sinkhole. Make sure to include a cheese tasting in your itinerary and pick up some chestnut liqueur from the historical hilltop village of Piódão.

How to get there You can either take the train (Lisboa - Santa Apolonia) or a bus (Lisbon Sete Rios) from Lisbon to Covilhã, where you will have to take a tax to Serra Da Estrela Natural Park.

Arouca Geopark

In May 2021, Arouca Geopark unveiled the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, which hangs 574ft above Paiva River and offers sensational views of the conservation space, Aguieiras Waterfall and Paiva Gorge – if you can muster the courage to cross it, that is. After the adrenalin wears off, head to the Pedras Parideiras, a geological phenomenon whose name loosely translates to ‘breeding stones’ – small rocks that emerge from large ones. It’s the result of changing temperatures and erosion, but folklore suggests that the site has the power to get women pregnant.

How to get there If you travel from Lisbon, the quickest way to get to Arouca Geopark is by train and taxi. The train departs from Lisboa - Santa Apolonia station and arrives in Ovar, where you can catch a direct taxi. If you are travelling from Porto, you can take the Line 9 bus from Porto — Campo 24 de Agosto to Rio Mau, where you must catch a taxi to Arouca Geopark.

15 Best Cities to Visit in Portugal

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 4, 2024

Situated on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula looking out over the Atlantic, the history of Portugal’ cities has long been tied to the waters that surround it. Famous navigators left its ports to return with fantastic riches that helped build the amazing cities that we know today.

From picturesque Porto and historic Evora to lovely Lisbon and the fairytale-like Sintra ; there are simply loads of great cities in Portugal to explore.

Faro

Located in the idyllic Algarve region , Faro is a great city from which to explore the delights of this beautiful and untamed part of Portugal. Numerous beaches, sea cliffs and picturesque rocky alcoves dot the coast and there are a plethora of sites just waiting to be discovered with some stunning views also to be had.

In Faro itself, the old part of the city is wonderful to walk around and as so many people descend on the city during the summer, the place has a lively atmosphere as holidaymakers look to have a good time in the sun.

14. Figueira da Foz

Figueira da Foz

Despite its rather ugly features, Figueira da Foz has been a popular haunt with tourists for years and every summer hordes of them descend upon the city to enjoy all that it has to offer. Attracted by what is possibly the widest beach in Europe (it takes nearly ten minutes to reach the sea across the sand!), many visitors look to lounge on the beach and taste some local cuisine at the restaurants and bars nearby.

The busiest resort along this stretch of the coast, Figueira da Foz has a gigantic casino that also draws people to the city. In addition to all this, the great waves at the nearby Praia do Cabedelo are perfect for surfers looking to take to the surf.

Viseu

With a beautiful historic center comprising narrow alleys that weave their way between mansions, palaces and churches; Viseu is a picturesque city to visit. The 12th century cathedral is the principal attraction and its weathered façade gives off a delightful sense of timeliness.

As it is built on a hilltop the more modern parts of the city fall away from the historic center, draping themselves down the hillside. Wandering around Viseu is a lovely way to spend the day.

Leiria

The main attraction in Leiria is the stunning castle that so beautifully sits atop a hill overlooking the city. With trees springing up around its ancient walls, it is magical to behold, appearing as if out of a fairytale.

From the castle itself there is a great view of Leiria down below. Amidst the tightly packed buildings there are a few museums to explore and, as it is a university town; the center comes to life at night. Nearby beaches provide visitors and locals alike with the chance to catch some sun while lounging by the shore.

Guarda

The highest city in the whole of Portugal, Guarda is somewhat grey to behold as it is mostly made out of granite. This is due in large part to the fact that the city used to protect its residents from Spanish invaders. As such, an old castle used to be located here and wandering around the center you´ll see different parts of its ancient walls popping up here and there.

While the city is a bit drab, there are various old churches, palaces and townhouses which are worth stopping by with the amazing Gothic cathedral in the center of Guarda being the city´s main draw. For those looking to explore the scenic Serra da Estrela mountains, Guarda is a great gateway to them and the mountain range itself is simply stunning.

10. Viana do Castelo

Viana do Castelo

With the lovely scenery surrounding the city, its beautiful monuments, awe-inspiring architecture and charming vibe; Viana do Castelo certainly has a lot going for it! The Republic Square which gives off a timeless feel has a number of lovely buildings and facades surrounding it and it’s a great place to sit back and have a drink in, taking in all of their features.

Coupled with the Basilica of Santa Luzia which is modelled on the Sacre Coeur in Paris; these are just two of the highlights that delight visitors to this marvelous city.

9. Guimaraes

Guimaraes

Said to be the city where ´Portugal was born´, Guimaraes was the country´s first capital and its incredible castle and beautiful palace certainly testify to its prestigious past. While these two important sites obviously take precedence when visiting the city, there are a number of other places also worth checking out.

For a stunning view, head to the nearby Penha Mountain and marvel at Guimaraes down below. In the city, Olive Square is a peaceful place to spend some time and here you really get a feel for the wealth of history that the city is steeped in. Lying about fifty kilometres north of Porto, Guimaraes is a great day-trip for history lovers.

Funchal

Located on the stunning island of Madeira, Funchal serves a gateway from which to explore its natural wonders. The city itself has numerous botanical gardens which are nice to walk around and have a lovely view out over the Atlantic.

Two of the most popular places to visit are the Colegio Church which has an ornately decorated interior and the bustling Mercado dos Lavradores. With a number of world famous wines produced in Madeira you´ll want to sample as many as possible before heading off to your next destination.

Evora temple

With more than two thousand years of history packed into this small city and over four thousand historic buildings, temples and churches, some dating back to Roman times; Evora is mesmerising to explore.

The chilling Bone Chapel is interesting to visit as are the Roman walls, ancient aqueducts and 13th century Gothic cathedral. The city center is packed with fascinating places to visit and outside of Evora is the intriguing megalithic complex of Almendres Cromlech that has a large group of menhirs and gigantic stones, laid out in a circle.

Coimbra

The largest city in the region that bares its name, Coimbra has a plethora of historical sites that will delight history lovers and, with one of the oldest universities in the world; the city has been a seat of learning for generations.

Nowhere is this better demonstrated than at the beautiful baroque Biblioteca Joanina which is stunning to behold. The city center is great to wander around with peaceful gardens and old churches overlooking the Rio Mondego down below. Before leaving, make sure to listen to some of the nostalgic Fado music that is native to the city.

Braga

Seamlessly mixing the old with the new, the different sides to Braga make it a fascinating place to stop by. The highlight for many is the incredible Bom Jesus do Monte; looking up at it from the bottom of an almost endless flight of steps, the cathedral at the top looks majestic. After a breathless ascent, there is a lovely view of the surrounding area.

The historic center of the city is also great to visit and there are numerous churches and museums to pique your interest. The spectacular cathedral dates back almost a thousand years and, coupled with the new modern developments and spread out university campuses; it perfectly presents the different faces of the city.

Aveiro

With its network of canals, footbridges and colorfully painted boats, it is perhaps unsurprising that Aveiro has been nicknamed the ´Venice of Portugal´. Situated on the Atlantic coast, many people flock here for the picturesque beaches that lie just outside the city and the accompanying watersports on offer.

Aveiro itself has more than enough attractions to keep people occupied with the most popular being the impressive Aveiro Cathedral and the ornately decorated Convento de Jesus. Head to Bairro Antigo for some delicious local cuisine.

Sintra

Almost fairytale-like in terms of what is on offer, Sintra has domineering castles, elegant palaces, luxurious villas and royal residences that will entice and astound visitors to this beautiful part of the country. The undoubted highlight is the jaw dropping Pena Palace which is bewitching in its uniqueness.

Nestled among a tree-filled hilltop, the bright yellow building looks as if it appeared out of a Disney film, such is its eccentricity and distinctive architectural style. The nearby Moorish Castle is another fantastic place to visit as are the picturesque mountains that surround the area.

Porto

As it is the home of port, it is somewhat a given that you should try this sweet yet potent alcohol when visiting the city in northern Portugal. Porto is a picturesque place with vibrant colored buildings overlooking the Douro River and the famous white and blue tiles that are so associated with the country are scattered around the city.

The numerous hills are dotted with medieval palaces, cathedrals, churches and more and simply wandering around Porto is a delight in itself. Head to the old center of Ribeira for its lively atmosphere, narrow twisting alleys and views over the river.

Lisbon

Portugal´s capital city has become increasingly popular with tourists in recent years and it´s easy to see why. With its lovely weather, wealth of historical sites and picturesque setting on the banks of the Tagus River; it´s a fantastic place to spend some time.

The impressive St. George´s Castle perched atop of a hill overlooking the city is a popular site to visit as are Belem Tower and the breathtakingly beautiful Jeronimos Monastery. With great, affordable food, Lisbon certainly has something for everyone – make sure to try the famous Pastel de Nata before you leave!

Hostelworld Blog | Posted on May 5, 2018 |

Oh HELLO land of stunning beaches, fairy-tale castles, buzzing cities and devilish little custard tarts! Portugal is an absolute gem of a country, a vibrant mix of old and new. If you’re broke AF, but still want to hit up Europe this summer, then Portugal has everything you need. Not only is the food incredible and cheap, the hostels are amongst the best in the world and consistently come up trumps at our annual hostel award based on your reviews. And with so many stunning beaches and hiking opps you’ll hardly spend a penny when you’re there.

So what are the best places to visit in Portugal ? From the mainland that hugs the Atlantic Coast to the remote islands of the Azores, there really is an incredible piece of Portugal for everyone that you’ll no doubt end up falling in love with. So buckle up, it’s time for an epic custard tart crawl  adventure around Portugal.

Best places to visit in portugal / sintra / hand luggage only

Sintra is like something straight out of a fairytale. It’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in Portugal with its historic castles, quirky mansions and a whole heap of idyllic gardens to get lost in for days. It’s a great spot for hiking but if you don’t have long here, we recommend renting a rickshaw for the day; it’s a pretty epic way to see all the sights including Pena Palace, The Castle of The Moors and the often overlooked Montserrat Palace, all of which are just jaw-droppingly pretty.

To save money on eating out, grab some olives and other nibbles before you go and enjoy a slap-up picnic in the lush forests… alfresco dining at its finest! To swerve the crowds, set off early and avoid weekends if you can.

Because of its remote location far from the mainland of Portugal itself, the Azores islands are one of the best places in Portugal to get off the beaten track. If you love nature, hiking and surfing then this set of islands adrift in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean are the perfect place to escape to this summer.

The Azores are very budget friendly like most of Portugal, and since everything here revolves around exploring the great outdoors, you’ll hardly spend a penny once you’re here. We recommend hiking around the coastal routes for breathtaking views, trekking the Praia-Lagoa do Fogo trail and finishing off at Lagoa do Fogo, a lake that sits in a volcanic lagoon where you can take a cooling dip after all that exertion.

Lisbon has become one of the coolest destinations for backpackers in Europe, and it’s easy to see why. To get your bearings in this historic city swerve the tourist busses and hop on board Tram 28. It’s a pretty rickety ride on board this historic tram, and be prepped for the lack of air conditioning in the height of summer, but it’s the best way to explore the city quickly, authentically and cheaply.

After seeing some of Lisbon’s most iconic sights, such as the Belém Tower and the Santa Justa Elevator, it’s time to lose yourself in the backstreets of  Lisbon’s diverse neighbourhoods . It feels like there’s street art, creative spaces (check out Village Underground Lisboa ) and pretty squares around every corner. And at night, Lisbon really comes into its own, with some of the best clubs (if you only visit one, make sure it’s Lux Fragil ) and bars in the whole of Europe. A good place to start your evening is the city’s former red light district, Cais do Sodré.

For budget-friendly piri-piri chicken head to Restaurante Bonjardim  and after a long night on the town, there’s no better way to refuel than with the locals at A Merendeira – try the homemade soup and fresh chorizo bread. With so many things to do and see, it’s easy to see why Lisbon is one of the best places to visit in Portugal. For more tips and reasons to visit, read our love letter to Lisbon .

Lagos is the most southwesterly city in mainland Portugal, and it’s everything a Portuguese city should be: rustic, cultured, and really flipping hot. For a tasty bit of South American-inspired grub that won’t break the bank, hop on over to Beats & Burritos . Make sure to try their spicy salsa and yummy quinoa pots.

What makes Lagos really special is the stunning countryside and coastline that surrounds it. Just 2 miles south along the coast is the Ponta da Piedade, a group of beautiful rock formations nestled in the ocean. Although this is a popular tourist destination in Portugal, it’s still well worth a visit because it’s one of the best places in the whole country to watch the sun go down with an ice-cold beer in hand. For more stunning beaches nearby, read our Algarve road trip guide .

It’s got all the historic charm, gorgeous tiles and custard tarts of Lisbon but with fewer crowds – what’s not to like?! Porto is one of Europe’s most underrated cities and definitely one of the best places to visit in Portugal if you’re looking to avoid being one of the herd.

Head over to explore the beautiful streets of the Ribeira district where there’s ample opportunity to chill out and relax in the city’s gorgeous cafes and bars. Just like Lisbon, Porto is the kind of city where you should go with the flow and explore the back streets on foot. If you want to do the tourist thang, then Clerigos Tower is well worth a visit and you can go sample the city’s famous tipple at  Portologia  afterwards.

Nestled in the centre of the country, Tomar is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal and also one of the most historic. Be sure to make a pit stop at the stunningly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site Convent of Christ. For a more unusual and quirky experience, head over to Museu dos Fósforos, a matchbox museum that’s considered by some to be one of the best museums in the world. Just a heads up, if matches don’t strike your interest, you’ll probably want to give this a miss. To get your pretty castle fix, head over to Castelo de Almourol. Sitting on its own rocky perch overlooking the lake below, it’s a great place to experience a stunning Portuguese sunset.

One of the most westerly points of mainland Europe, Sagres is the perfect place to experience some of the impressive natural landscapes of Portugal. Make sure to drop by Fortaleza de Sagres, an awesome fort jutting out into the Pacific that’s a little off the beaten track but worth making the effort to see. Head over to A Casínha , a family-run affair that serves up authentic Portuguese cuisine and is the best place to fill your tummy before heading up the coast.

If you’ve packed your surfboard, head over to Praia da Mareta and catch some of the epic waves that shape the shoreline. If you’re more of a hiker, there are loads of free trails that weave between the natural landscape in and around Cabo Sao Vicente. The dramatic cliffs, crashing waves and amazing views are unforgettable and the area doesn’t get too crowded even in summer.

Famed the world over for its incredible waves, this is one of the best places in Portugal for water sports lovers. The great thing about Ericeira is the award winning surfing schools that cater for all types of surfers, from novices to pros. If the surf fills you with more fright that fun, stay on the dry land and enjoy the region’s gorgeous sandy beaches.

All that surfing is likely to have worked up a thirst, which is easily remedied by a dash towards ADEGA bar . This atmospheric and traditional bar is perfect for an afternoon chill session accompanied by live music.

Perched on the south coast in the Algarve region, Faro is a buzzing student city that should be on every backpacker’s list. If you want to avoid the crazy crowds in the summer, head towards Barreta Island, fondly known as Ilha Deserta. Take the 30-minute ferry from the centre of Faro to experience a whole other world. Think gorgeous sandy beaches, sun-kissed shores and amazing waters that are perfect for an afternoon dip.

These Are the Most Beautiful Cities in the World, According to Travelers

Travelers on Reddit voted on the most beautiful cities in the world and these 5 gems rose to the top.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

There is beauty everywhere — in the minimalist architecture and fluid floor plans of Japan’s countryside to the concrete finishes and unusual shapes of Eastern Europe — but certain cities seem to captivate the general population, wooing visitors with their storybook architecture, preserved castles , and greenery.

When Reddit user /Slommyhouse asked the r/travel community “What is the most aesthetically beautiful city that never loses its appeal no matter how many times you visit?” travelers chimed in and certain destinations rose to the top — including lesser-known cities in Central Europe and a royal sanctuary northwest of Lisbon.

Florence, Italy

Florence, along with Prague, was the “best” answer to the question, based on the ratio of user upvotes to downvotes. The result isn’t shocking — when it comes to art and architecture, Florence can’t help but stand out. You’ll find grocery stores and pizza spots housed within stunning Renaissance architecture, along with major sites like the Duomo Cathedral and Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture.

Reddit user /claudio6992 replied, “For me it’s Florence been there on multiple visits and it hits different. I love history and for me it’s like an open museum were you can imagine yourself transported back to a different era.”

Prague, Czech Republic

In addition to Florence, users had a lot to say about Prague, a city that’s bisected by the Vltava River and built around the Old Town Square, a plaza surrounded by colorful baroque buildings. The highlight of this historic square is the St. Nicholas Church, which is considered to be the greatest example of Prague Baroque architecture, and the medieval astronomical clock, which provides a complicated and animated hourly show . One Reddit user, /WestCoastBestCoast01 , replied, “Prague was immediately my first thought!!”

Edinburgh, Scotland

The compact, hilly city of Edinburg has two distinct areas: the medieval Old Town, which is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, and the elegant, neoclassical New Town, which has stunning gardens. The juxtaposition of these two areas is so significant that they’ve been named a UNESCO Heritage Site . User /BasicLawyer noted that for them, the city is special because of the “ancient volcanic structures surrounding a gothic city with networks of underground streets.”

Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Central European country of Slovenia is rarely on top of Americans’ must-visit list, but the country, which is known for its mountains, ski resorts, and lakes (including Lake Bled, a glacial lake fed by hot springs) finally got some recognition. The capital city of Ljubljana is split by the Ljubljanica River, which is lined with outdoor cafes, and has plenty of green space.

User /SoullessGinger666 called it the “Most anti-car, pro-pedestrian city I've ever been to,” noting that it’s “Utterly stunning down the river.” User /klimatronic confirmed that “when you are in Ljubljana, you don't need car, or even public transport, you can go anywhere by foot.”

Sintra, Portugal

The resort town of Sintra is only a 40-minute drive from central Lisbon, but the vibe couldn’t be more different. The town is set in the foothills of Portugal’s Sintra Mountains and is surrounded by forest and greenery. It has been a longtime royal sanctuary, with elaborate palaces that include the Sintra National Palace, which is heralded for its twin chimneys and notable tilework, and the Pena National Palace, which sits on a hilltop and has sweeping views.

Redding user /notyourwheezy , said, “something about those castles that just looks so fairytale. and bonus if it's rainy and misty. truly feels like I've stepped into a storybook.”

10 Best Cities To Visit in Portugal on Vacation

A Portuguese vacation should be on any family’s European must-visit list. It’s a beautiful country, with delicious food, gorgeous sites, and friendly people. With three international airports located on mainland Portugal, it’s fairly easy to access from most US destinations.

Although it is a small country, there are many great towns, small villages, and cities to see while you are there. So, you’ll need to do a little research in advance to figure out which are the best towns in Portugal to visit during your vacation.

Disclosure: My first visit to Portugal was complimentary as part of a media trip with Martinhal Hotels, and I paid full price for my second trip. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase through one of these may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Best Cities to Visit in Portugal on Vacation

You’ll probably want to include the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon in your vacation plans. It’s the largest city in Portugal and one of the major cities in Europe.

Lisbon also has the largest of the international airports in the country, so you’ll typically be able to get the best flights to and from there. There’s so much to see and do in Lisbon , and there are also plenty of day trips from Lisbon if you decide to base your vacation there.

While you are there, it’s a good idea to book a guided tour so you can get an overview of the city and learn more about its rich history. There are lots of options, including tuk-tuk and tram tours. We also enjoyed a yacht tour of the Lisbon Tagus River waterfront.

See tours in Lisbon here .

We’ve stayed in several hotels in Lisbon, and have loved them. There are lots of options, from smaller, more boutique hotels to international chains . Here are three we’d recommend:

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Luxury Hotel and Apartments – I had the opportunity to tour this hotel before it opened, several years ago. It’s a family-friendly hotel in the trendy Chiado neighborhood and offers luxury apartments that are specifically designed for families. If you are looking for a little more space, this can be a great choice.

The Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel – we stayed here on our last night in Portugal, and I wish we had more time there. The home of a former palace, this hilltop hotel offers some rooms with views of the Tagus River. It also has a beautiful lagoon-style pool which is a surprising oasis for a city hotel. We enjoyed spending an afternoon at this beautiful pool.

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade – we spent three nights at this city hotel, located on a luxurious and swanky street in downtown Lisbon. It offers several restaurants and bars, including a trendy rooftop bar with beautiful night views of the city. We felt it was a great location for our Lisbon vacation.

We started our most recent Portuguese vacation in the gorgeous, historic city of Porto, located in Northern Portugal. There is an international airport in Porto, and we were able to fly from Boston to Porto with a layover at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal .

Porto offers so much to do, and is a beautiful city. We spent four nights there, and I feel like we could have spent our entire vacation there. It’s got a hip, trendy vibe, with lots of boutiques and cafes, among the historic attractions and narrow, cobblestone streets.

During our trip to Porto, we stayed at the Intercontinental Porto . It’s a modern hotel located in a historic building – the former Palacio das Cardosas.

From there, we were able to take a short walk to most of the historic attractions, including the Douro River waterfront. For the places we weren’t able to walk to, we found Uber easy to use in town. If you decide to drive, keep in mind that there are some very hilly, narrow streets that can be a challenge to navigate.

One of the highlights of our trip was the Porto Bridge Climb , a relatively mild adventure that takes place on the Arrábida Bridge. Although you’ll be harnessed, there are stairs to climb.

Across the Douro River from Porto is the town of Gaia. Known for its wine and port cellars, Gaia is a great place to visit for the day when you are staying in Porto. There are many different restaurants and wine cellar tours (along with wine tasting) – we recommend visiting at least one!

Want to take in some gorgeous views of the Douro River and of Porto? The Gaia Cable Car runs year-round, is about a 5-minute ride, and offers aerial views of the area. One-way or round-trip tickets are available.

Douro Valley

Located about an hour and a half from the Porto city center is the Douro Valley. The wine country region of Portugal is absolutely stunning, with green rolling hills and a winding river.

During our visit, we kayaked along the Douro River, and then visited Quinta da Pacheca, a vineyard where guests can stay in a converted wine barrel.

Be sure to try port wine, which the region is famous for. In fact, wineries are unable to use the “port” label if the wine doesn’t come from the Douro region.

Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is both a town and a municipality. While it’s most popular for the bright and colorful Pena Palace, there’s so much more to do and see in Sintra.

Some of the other attractions include the Castle of the Moors (Moorish Castle), the Sintra National Palace, and Quinta da Regaleira (located near the city center, with Knights Templar symbols).

While visiting Sintra is definitely possible on a day trip , I would recommend arriving early. It’s one of the most popular destinations, especially in the summer months. Pena Palace especially gets busy throughout the day. Don’t miss visiting the small town of Sintra, a beautiful historic town with shops, cafes, and more to explore.

The very first place I visited in Portugal is Cascais. It’s a lovely resort town and former fishing village, with beautiful beaches, shops, resorts, outdoor cafes, and more. It’s a quick distance from Lisbon, so it’s an easy day trip. Or, there are plenty of luxurious resorts where you can stay.

Cascais is located on the Portuguese Riviera, which offers some of the most beautiful beaches outside of southern Portugal.

The historic city of Evora, located southwest of Lisbon in the center of Portugal, offers some popular attractions. These include the Roman Temple of Évora, located in the historic center of the city, in addition to the Chapel of Bones (a 16th-century temple with an interior lined with skulls and bones). Evora is about halfway between Lisbon and the Spanish border.

The town of Sagres is located in the most southwestern point of Europe, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It is home to several beautiful beaches, with an active surf community. During my first trip to Portugal, I stayed at the Martinhal Sagres Family Beach Resort , a large, luxurious resort made especially for families that is the perfect place for a family to relax.

It can be a little challenging to get to the Algarve if you fly into Lisbon. Options include rental cars (for a road trip from Lisbon – about 3 hours), public transportation (trains), or private transportation. There is also an international airport in Faro, which is east of Sagres but still in the Algarve region. However, I’d recommend visiting during your trip to Portugal because it has some of the best beaches in the area.

During our most recent visit, we stayed in Carvoeiro in the Algarve. This area offers beaches, resorts, shops, and restaurants, and is famous for the Carvoeiro Caves. I’d definitely recommend going on an Algarve cave tour during your time in the area – it’s such a unique experience and a fun thing to see.

During our trip, we stayed at a beautiful, clifftop resort, right in Carvoeiro. The Tivoli Carvoeiro is a luxury resort offering a spa, restaurants, an outdoor pool, and gorgeous views of the natural beauty of the ocean and cliffs.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is located on the archipelago of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean (on São Miguel Island ) and is the capital city of the Azores region. The Azores can be one of the easiest European vacations for families, due to their proximity to the East Coast of the US. It’s a relatively short flight.

Although I haven’t been to the Azores (except for a flight layover), they are definitely on my list. These beautiful islands are known for their gorgeous hydrangeas, and also offer many things to see and do.

Have you been to Portugal? Which city or town in Portugal is your favorite?

Frequently Asked Questions

Like the rest of Europe, summer is a popular time in Europe. We enjoyed our August vacation, although we were lucky because it wasn’t too hot. Late spring or early fall would be less busy and should still have nice weather.

The Azores are located about 1,000 miles from the mainland of Portugal. Some flights from the northeast of the US have a layover in the Azores before continuing on to Lisbon.

Lisbon is the largest airport and is likely to have the most direct flights. However, if you want to go to Porto and the Algarve, you’ll need to travel North and then South.

What's your chance of seeing the northern lights tonight? A look at Saturday's forecast

Illuminating the night sky with pink, green and gray colors, the northern lights made its appearance in the United Kingdom and the northern half of the United States on Friday. The magical phenomena could happen again tonight.

The show fascinated many onlookers as they took out their phones to capture the beauty of the night sky. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued extreme (G5) conditions across the United States. A storm of this intensity has not been seen since October 2003. The storm gained the name "Halloween Storm" and caused many power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to Earth.com .

Meteorologists have predicted that the northern lights can be visible on Saturday as well as Sunday. If you are going outside to see the northern lights, forecasters want to remind the public that their solar eclipse glasses can be used for viewing the phenomenon.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for the next viewing of the northern lights.

The northern lights: Danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

Where can you see the northern lights tonight?

The Space and Weather Prediction Center  offers an experimental forecast map  that shows the aurora may be visible in a wide swath of the U.S. including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Other states like California, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida could also see the sky light up again for an encore performance. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather, pollution and cloud cover.

Below are forecast predictions for seeing the northern lights in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana on Saturday.

Rain and clouds are expected to damper expectations to see the aurora borealis around the Rochester, N.Y. area . Elsewhere in NY, the  Lower Hudson Valley could see the lights again, if weather permits.

NWS maps predicting the intensity and location of the northern lights Saturday and Sunday show the aurora will be visible in mid to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be mostly cloudy with some rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. The NWS predicted 48% to 58% sky cover in metro Detroit from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. The western portion of both peninsulas are expected to have a lower cloud cover.

In the Milwaukee area , the evening is expected to bring mostly clear skies and overnight will have scattered clouds, said Tim Halbach, local meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Those living around the Cincinnati region could be treated to the northern lights Saturday night with the NWS' Wilmington, Ohio , office forecasting dry, partly cloudy conditions. Clouds shouldn't be an issue as many Ohioans reported seeing the lights Friday despite some cloud cover.

In a telephone interview, Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the NOAA's  Space Weather Prediction Center  in Boulder, Co, said Indianapolis and surrounding areas might have a better chance of seeing the aurora today and Sunday.

They can expect clear skies tonight, Bettwy said.

"The aurora itself might be actually a little bit less active than it was last night," he told IndyStar. "I think the ability for you to see it will be better because the skies will be clearing out — at least in the Indianapolis area and that immediate vicinity."

Northern lights forecast path

If you want to get a better idea of if you will be able to see the northern lights from your state, check NOAA's aurora forecast tool , which has a 30-minute forecast window.

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

Scientist left amazed by the aurora

The aurora seen on May 10 amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. She sent photos of the lights and the April eclipse to her friends in Italy. The northern lights weren't as prominent in Italy as it was in other places.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night isn't usual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

That's because the Earth's magnetic activity was at a nine, the highest the index goes, coupled with the Sun being at an active peak, causing eruptions. She added the colors cannot be predicted either as it depends on how the solar energetic particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Oxygen appears green, while nitrogen appears purple, blue or pink, she said.

"It just depends on which atoms in the atmosphere this particle interact with," Fruscione said.

She declined to predict how strong Saturday's aurora could be as it's not in her expertise, but said people make predictions all the time about space weather not just for the northern lights, but to ensure communications, space stations, astronauts and other matter in space doesn't get majorly disrupted.

Down on Earth, however, the activity is harmless to humans.

"It's completely harmless because the particles do not don't do not reach us," Fruscione said. "The reason why we see the colors is that the particle interacts with the atoms and they make these beautiful colors and that's it."

For Saturday, and any other day where chatter about the aurora borealis is high, Fruscione encouraged people to download an aurora forecasting app to their phones so they can see the colorful skies.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph,  according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.
