The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

best greek island cruise 2023

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

best greek island cruise 2023

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

best greek island cruise 2023

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

best greek island cruise 2023

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

best greek island cruise 2023

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

best greek island cruise 2023

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Related: What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Our top picks for exploring the best of Greece by cruise

author_avatar

Recently updated on October 13th, 2023 at 01:46 pm

The best cruise in Greece? It’s the stuff of legend.

We know how difficult it is to choose only a precious few Greek islands to visit. You’ll be tempted to jet off to Naxos, swing over to Rhodes, stop in Crete, and sail to Milos, but such an ambitious adventure can be a logistical nightmare.

Instead, let us take care of the practicals so all you need to worry about are the photos on your holiday in the Greek islands.

A Greek Island-Hopping Holiday

Aerial view of greek islands and cruise ship, Greece

Our top picks for exploring the best of Greece by cruise weren’t chosen at random. No matter if you’re planning a family cruise of the Greek islands, setting your sights on an epic honeymoon, or just want to use your PTO to its fullest potential, we believe the three main features should be:

  • Ample leisure time with instant accessibility
  • A wealth of cultural, historical, and contemporary experiences
  • A perfect mix of must-see attractions and lesser-known sites

And that’s why we think the one of the best cruises you can take in Greece has Mykonos, Santorini, and Delos as its ports of call.

Cafe and windmills on Green island Mykonos

If an Ancient Greek god created Mykonos as the epitome of what an island vacation should be, we’d believe it. You’ll know you’re on holiday immediately when you arrive in Mykonos: if the sun-kissed bodies on the sand don’t lure you over to a beach towel, the bass blaring out of the swanky bars will tempt you to party until sunrise.

Nightlife aside, you’ll have every reason to lose sleep as you pack your day with visits to the stunning Windmills of Kato Mili, pour over the exhibits at the Aegean Maritime and Archaeological Museums, and treat your sweet tooth to melopita pies filled with cheese, cinnamon, and tirovolia . And when all else fails, you’re never more than an arm’s length away from a bottle of ouzo and a few new friends to dance the night away with.

Golden sunset behind church, Santorini, Greece

We don’t want to spread rumors, but we heard that even Paris is jealous of Santorini’s romantic prowess. Yes, gazing at the Blue Dome churches and whitewashed buildings are magnificent, particularly at sunset, but you needn’t set foot on the island to fall in love. Once you see the multicolored cliffs rising up from the Aegean, you’ll be smitten with Thira’s rugged yet delicate beauty.

It’s not all seafood, selfies, and suntanning, though. As much as you’ll want to indulge in the laid-back lavishness of the island, there’s more to explore beyond the shops and bars of Fira and Oia. Ancient Thera and the Bronze Age Akrotiri archaeological sites give you a glimpse into the lives of those that called Santorini home as far back as the 16th-century BC.

Aerial view of Ancient amphitheater on Delos Island, Greece

While your social media friends head to Crete, you’ll post pics of Delos and have followers wondering how they missed this cool Cyclades spot. Greek myth says the god Apollo and his sister Artemis were born in Delos.

Surrounded by other ruins, the Temple of Apollo is yours to explore, as is the island’s museum which features artifacts from Roman and Hellenistic times. You won’t find hotels on this archaeological site, making it a perfect day trip destination to fill your Greek cruise with another memorable port of call.

Our Greek Island Hopper tour takes you to all three islands with ease. High speed ferries cut your time in transit and give you more time to shop, dine, and actually explore each island to your liking. This 10-day trip around Greece’s famous islands starts and ends at Piraeus Port of Athens, ensuring that even your first and final days of your holiday aren’t wasted or waterlogged.

One secret you’ll want to tell the world about…

If you’re feeling a bit wishy-washy about committing to a cruise around the Greek Islands, we get it.

Cruising isn’t for everyone, just as some people prefer not to rely on trains, buses, or flights to get from place to place on holiday. Which is why you’ll appreciate a chance to merely dip your toe into the world of cruising.

Trafalgar’s Secrets of Greece tour offers a chance to see the best sights on mainland Greece, plus a short ferry trip to Corfu and an option to visit dreamy Santorini.

Panoramic view of Kerkyra, capital of Corfu Island, Greece

You’ll want to spend hours people-watching in Spianada, one of Greece’s most impressive squares, though you can just as easily fill your day exploring the winding medieval streets of Old Town. Stroll through the arcades and admire the architecture, each colorful townhouse and opulent palace flourished with the British, French, or Venetian aesthetic of its time.

When you’re not roaming through the grand Achilleion Palace and the regal Venetian Castle, sites like the 13th-century Paleokastritsa Monastery balance historic charm and drool-worthy backdrops where the rugged mountains meet the sea.

white houses and blue domes on greek island Santorini

Two days in Santorini is plenty of time to snap a selfie in front of the Blue Dome churches. This volcanic island is exceptionally accessible, giving you options to swim in hot springs by day and hike to unforgettable panoramas for sunsets every evening.

“Island time” can’t even describe Santorini’s chill pace; you’re welcome to while away the day at a winery, on a catamaran, or with a good book on the beach. Just find a moment to pop into a restaurant for a plate of the chewiest octopus you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.

It’s all Greek on land & sea

Are you a bit of a landlubber? Don’t worry, we weren’t born with sea legs, either. Thankfully, the Ancient Greeks were kind enough to leave heaps of their culture on the mainland.

Trafalgar’s Best of Greece tour gives you 8-days worth of overland adventure. You’ll check off the bucket list stops in Athens like the Acropolis and the site of the first modern Olympics. Then it’s off to Corinth, Nafplion, and the site of the ancient Olympics. Between Patras and a return to Athens, you’ll see more ruins, monasteries, and museums.

Whether you fancy riding the waves on a high speed ferry or keeping your trainers planted firmly on solid ground, we’ve got multiple ways to get you around Greece with your desired level of comfort and convenience. Explore Trafalgar’s best Greek island cruises and overland experiences to find your perfect Greek holiday itinerary.

A Greek islands cruise is the perfect way to experience this magical country, whether you’re island-hopping in the Aegean or delving deep into history as you sail around the rocky fingers of the Peloponnese, the scent of wild herbs in the air. 7. Oceania Cruises

You’ll find lots of options to explore Greece, from one-week hops between Athens and Rome to an 18-day odyssey from Jerusalem to Istanbul. All the big-hitting destinations are featured, as well as smaller spots where you may be the only ship in port, including the quaint old Venetian town of Chania; Gythion, on the remote Mani peninsula of the Peloponnese; and stately Syros, capital of the Cyclades. On board, dining is the line’s big selling point, with all speciality restaurants included in the price. The culinary theme is extended ashore with excursions that include visiting local markets for ingredients and learning to prepare them in an on-board cookery class and a foraging tour on Cephalonia.

Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas

8. Royal Caribbean

Families love Royal Caribbean’s big, bright vessels — they often choose the trip as much for the ship as the destination. Odyssey of the Seas, one of the line’s newest ships, is among the Royal Caribbean vessels that visit the Greek islands, and sails from Rome. Days between ports such as Santorini, Mykonos and Chania are filled with distractions such as a surf simulator, VR games, a skydiving simulator, dodgems and a vast pool deck complete with hammocks and oversized Jacuzzis. As well as week-long itineraries, there are shorter four-night sailings.

Norwegian Jade in Santorini

9. Norwegian Cruise Line

You’ve got plenty of choice if you want to explore Greece on one of Norwegian’s colourful, activity-filled ships, several of which spend summer in the Mediterranean. Cruises depart from Athens, Rome, Venice and Barcelona, offering from seven to ten-night holidays, visiting popular ports including Santorini, Athens, Mykonos and Corfu, as well as other destinations. Some voyages head to Istanbul, while others call at Malta. One of the standout features of Norwegian is its superb entertainment, which includes full-production Broadway shows, sizzling dance performance Burn The Floor and live music in a replica of the Cavern Club. Shore excursions, including riding, kayaking and mountain biking, are among the different ways to explore destinations.

Skopelos (Alamy)

10. Star Clippers

Sailing doesn’t come any more romantic than a voyage on one of Star Clippers’ stirring tall ships, exploring sun-drenched Greek islands under 36,000 sq ft of billowing sail. Star Flyer spends the summer in the Greek islands, carried by the wind to the Sporades. Stops include the pretty Mamma Mia! location of Skopelos, as well as the Cyclades and, on voyages from Athens to Istanbul, the Dodecanese. Life on board is as relaxed as it comes; you can bask in the hammock-like bowsprit nets and climb the mast to the crow’s nest for striking views down over the deck. It’s guaranteed you’ll always be on the most head-turning vessel in port.

Ermoupoli, Syros (Getty Images)

11. Windstar Cruises

Windstar’s small, luxurious ships offer some wonderfully creative itineraries around the Greek islands, with time to lose yourself among the ancient ruins of the Acropolis one day and kick back on soft sand beaches in the Cyclades the next. Visit medieval Monemvasia, squeeze through the narrow chasm of the Corinth Canal, or spend a day in Ermoupoli on Syros, where former sea captains’ mansions in ochre and terracotta cling to the hillside. There are overland tour options, too, combining Delphi’s exquisite Temple of Apollo and the mountain monasteries of Meteora with a cruise. Windstar has several ships in the Greek islands in summer and your home at sea could be the five-masted sailing ship Wind Surf, or the all-suite megayacht Star Pride.

On board with SeaDream Yacht Club

12. SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream’s petite, 112-passenger ships are as close as you’ll get to a private yacht, with stupendously good food, all-inclusive drinks and personal, intuitive service. Embrace the yachtie lifestyle, whether it’s plunging off the back of the ship into the sparkling blue Aegean sea or lounging by the pool while a waiter tops up your champagne. Greece itineraries vary from seven to 11 nights — some round-trip from Athens, others sail from Athens to Istanbul or Venice. Some of the most tempting ports of call include Milos; Skopelos; Hydra; the fortress town of Monemvasia; Gythio; and on Cephalonia, dreamy Fiskardo — where pastel-coloured houses are backed by pine-scented hills.

13. Azamara Club Cruises

Cultural immersion is the goal of Azamara, which operates a fleet of four comfortable, mid-sized ships, several of which cruise the Greek islands in summer. You’ll often be the last ship in port, staying in Santorini long after the sun has set in a blaze of scarlet, or docked in Rhodes as the medieval streets come alive in the cool of the evening. As well as the big-hitting ports, there are plenty of smaller surprises, including pretty Amorgos, Thessaloniki, Venetian Chania and Argostoli on Cephalonia, Captain Corelli country. Shore excursions include pottery and cookery classes, plus culinary walks through towns and villages stopping to taste local delicacies along the way. Life on board is informal — but pack something white for the weekly Bright Night deck party, an event for which Azamara is justifiably renowned.

Sea Cloud II explores the Greek islands all summer

14. Sea Cloud

This German-owned line’s graceful windjammers, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, explore the Greek islands all summer, and their itineraries mix mainstream ports with off-the-beaten-track spots such as Spetses, Nafplio, Syros and the walled city of Kavala, founded in the seventh century BC. The ships evoke a nostalgic era of glamour with their gleaming wood and polished brass. The original Sea Cloud was built in 1931 and even has a decorative marble fireplace in its master suite. While days are relaxed, with swimming off the ship’s water sports platform, evenings on board tend to dial things up a notch. A lot of the passengers are Germans who enjoy the sense of occasion and like to dress up.

Mediterranean cruises include the Greek islands and depart from Dubrovnik or Corfu , both served by Tui charter flights from a wide range of regional UK airports. Ports include Santorini, Mykonos, Heraklion, Chania and Katalolon. Cruise-and-stay options can be bolted on, so you can plump for a week in Corfu bookended by a seven-night cruise. Marella is the only cruise line to have a partnership with Champneys, so make time on board for the spa.

16. Crystal

Luxe-lovers will welcome the return of the Crystal name. In 2022 the A&K Travel Group acquired the Crystal brand and relaunched its pair of ocean ships, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. The former will spend the summer of 2023 on itineraries taking in big-name Greek islands including Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Patmos. To usher in a new era, the ship has undergone an extensive facelift which has seen cabins enlarged and passenger numbers reduced from 848 to 606. However, some things stay the same, including Crystal’s standout service which includes butler service to every suite.

Emerald Azzurra

17. Emerald Cruises

When it launched in 2022 the 100-passenger Emerald Azzurra marked river line Emerald Cruises’ move into the world of ocean cruising. Now joined by sister ship Sakara, the sleek vessels provide a swish superyacht experience without the price tag of more expensive lines. Both ships sail in the Greek islands and while there’s plenty of time for lazing and sunbathing, Emerald will appeal to anyone keen to keep active on holiday with excursions such as guided hikes, kayaking and diving. Gentler pursuits include a mosaic-making workshop on Mykonos and a glimpse into monastic life on Patmos. Itineraries also visit the lesser-known Amorgos, the most easterly isle in the Cyclades.

When is the best time to cruise the Greek islands?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Attractions will be quieter in spring and autumn during the shoulder months, but you’ll get the best weather (both for exploring ports and relaxing with a cocktail on deck) in July and August.

Again, it depends. The duration and cruise line — among other factors — will have a big influence on the price. If you’re looking to save money, consider choosing a shorter cruise and adding time at the end — you can base yourself on an island and catch a Blue Star ferry to see others.

I’m a Greece expert and this is where to go on your first Greek cruise

Greece cruises are on the bucket list of many, with by ship the ultimate way to island hop this idyllic destination. Here are the best places to visit.

Words by Rebecca Hall

Those familiar with the beautiful Mediterranean country of Greece will know it has thousands of islands yet only 227 are inhabited, some home to just hundreds of inhabitants while others boast a population well into four figures.

This makes the Greek islands exceedingly varied, so what better way to experience them than to visit a few on your first Greece cruise, to gain a taster in order to come back for a longer break?

My 15 years in Greece as a travel writer means I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the islands in as much depth as possible for the likes of Rough Guides and Lonely Planet guidebooks and have been a Destination Presenter on a Celebrity Cruises sailing around the islands.

Here I narrow the dizzying choice down, highlighting some of the best destinations to help you choose the ideal itinerary for your first Greek cruise.

Athens

If you’re embarking or disembarking from the port of Piraeus in Athens [above] on your Greece cruises, be sure to allocate time to spending some days exploring this eclectic city to start or round off your cruise in style.

Aside from the world-famous Acropolis, Parthenon [below] and Acropolis museum, there are a whole host of sites to see and activities to undertake. After you’ve climbed the Acropolis hill to the Parthenon, directly below in the Plaka neighbourhood lies a small area built and designed to resemble the tiny Cycladic island of Anafi.

Anafiotika, as it’s called, is an island within the mainland and has sugar-cubed, white-washed houses similar to that found in the Cyclades island – some still inhabited – and narrow cobbled streets.

athens greece

The new National Gallery in a stand-out building is a feat of architecture in itself. Here you’ll find many paintings, sculptures and engravings from Greek artists and the occasional visiting international one.

Forty minutes from Central Athens brings you to a different world, the Athenian Riviera, itself becoming a go-to destination unto itself with five-star hotels, glittering blue flag beaches and the unique spa Lake Vouliagmeni – a natural and thermal water swimming experience with year-round temperatures of 25C.

Venture further along the Riviera to the Temple of Poseidon, the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the Aegean.

You don’t have to go far to commune with nature in Athens either. A 10-minute drive brings you to Mount Hymettus; with its pine forests and monasteries it’s a popular hiking spot at the weekend with Athenians.

Now you’re ready to embark on your Greek island cruise, where should you pick, especially as there are a plethora of islands to choose from?

Santorini Greece

It makes sense to visit the most popular islands to fulfil your first taster. Santorini is invariably always on any Greek island cruise itinerary, and with good reason.

The volcanic eruption in the 16th century forever shaped its landscape and the two main towns of Fira and Oia [above] are scattered with the famous cubed whitewashed houses clinging to the top of the cliff that overlooks the crater left behind from this eruption.

Take a boat trip out to the caldera rim for a mini hike, but do this early morning as in the summer it gets very hot.

Santorini is renowned for its wines and is thought to be Greece’s top destination for wine tourism, with over 18 wineries to choose from on a relatively small island.

Nine indigenous grapes are cultivated here and the island is famous for its growing process; as Santorini has little shelter, the vines aren’t straight, they form a basket with the grapes growing in the centre to protect them from the harsh Aegean winds.

Then, of course, there are the famous caldera sunsets, a romantic way to round off the day with a glass of wine viewing the scenery from the island or back on deck.

mykonos windmills greece

Mykonos will also undoubtedly be on your first Greek island cruise itinerary. Known as the party island for A-listers and UHNWs alike, there’s no segregation here so if partying’s your scene, you’ll no doubt find yourself rubbing shoulders with someone famous.

Yet Mykonos offers a host of activities to suit all tastes, with its labyrinthine streets, famous windmills [above] and Petros the pelican wandering around.

Take a stroll around Mykonos Town; built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the windmills are the first landmarks you’ll see when coming into the island and the views from here towards ‘Little Venice’ are breathtaking.

Mykonos’s streets were deliberately designed to confuse invading pirates, however, all streets eventually lead to the port so enjoy a stroll and sip a coffee at one of the many cafes along the waterfront.

delos lions greece cruises

No trip to Mykonos is complete without a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage island of Delos, only a 20-minute ferry ride away.

Ancient Greek mythology maintains it’s the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Zeus’s twins conceived through an affair with a mortal. Delos was a safe haven for the mortal to give birth, away from the jealousy of Zeus’ Goddess wife.

Whether you believe in Greek mythology or not, wandering through these ancient ruins [above] gives you an idea of the importance of this island — constructed as a testament to the Gods.

If relaxing on a beach is more your preference, head to Agios Sostis, an unspoilt, quiet beach with a church and small restaurant.

street of the knights rhodes greece cruises

Further south brings you to Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese chain and a very popular cruise stop. Your ship will dock within walking distance of Rhodes Old Town, built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.

It’s one of Europe’s oldest living old towns where people still live and work behind the great castle walls, so spend time shopping for your handmade leather goods and sipping a coffee as you wander the labyrinthine cobbled alleyways.

It’s easy to soak up the atmosphere of the past here and there’s so much to do. The Palace of the Grand Masters the original residence of the Governor of Rhodes during Medieval times – is a must-visit.

Twenty-four rooms are open to visitors, including the Throne room where you’ll find massive fireplaces and ancient antiquities. It’s a very Game of Thrones-esque experience.

The Palace is situated at the end of the Street of the Knights [above], an ancient street with inns dedicated to the knights who served under the Grand Master.

Rhodes Greece greek island cruises

Walk the moat around the castle, or for a bird’s eye view of the Old Town to gain a different vantage point of the ancient city and its colourful houses and minarets, take a walk atop the castle walls.

If time allows then head an hour south to the Acropolis of Lindos [above], once a small fishing village and now a popular place to visit in the summer with the gorgeous St. Paul’s Bay, overlooked by the 4th century B.C Acropolis with the Temple of Athena on a 116-metre high cliff.

These are just scratching the surface of where you can visit on your Greek island cruise itinerary. Other places to consider are Chania and Heraklion in Crete, both famous for their Venetian ports and lighthouses and maybe further afield to Limassol in Cyprus.

Companies that offer Greek island cruises include Celestyal Cruises and Variety Cruises – both Greek companies that focus on the islands and some mainland destinations – as well as Virgin Voyages , Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and Starclippers, to name but a few.

Attractions to see during your Greek cruise

Travel dreams come true with a Greek cruise. Greece, the land of the Gods and Olympias, is a true Eldorado for all cruise fans. The islands off the mainland are each something special and if you enter the port of Piraeus , you will arrive at a place steeped in history, which will also enchant you.

In Greece's capital, Athens , you will encounter the extraordinary remains of the former city fortress. The Acropolis of Athens is the most famous representation of an ancient citadel. The thick pillars look particularly beautiful in the evening when they are staged with indirect light. At the foot of the lofty hill on which the fortress sits, you can visit the Acropolis Museum. Backgrounds and historical events around the fortress  are impressively recreated here. --> Athens cruises

On the Greek island of Corfu , you can visit the city of the same name. Venetian, French and British rulers once had the island in their power before it fell to Greece. Visit the Old Fortress , whose outer walls are reminiscent of the Venetians, the buildings inside, however, reflect the time of the British. To understand the lives of farmers in Corfu, take a tour to the deserted village of Paleó Períthiain where farmers once lived. Today it is a museum village and gives an insight into the difficult living and working conditions in the past. --> Corfu cruises

An absolute highlight of any Greek cruise is its pearl Santorini . The group of islands, located in the southern Aegean Sea, was created about 1,500 years ago as a result of a volcanic eruption of volcanic lava. Perched high on the rocks are the typical white houses with their blue domes, still bearing witness to their unique history. Santorini invites every cruise visitor to linger. Climb the hills either on the back of a mule or take the cable car quite comfortably. Once at the top you can enjoy yourself in cafes, restaurants, shops, churches, temples or small chapels. --> Santorini cruises

One of the most popular destinations is Crete - the largest island in Greece . Land in Heraklion or Chania and discover the multitude of cultural attractions the island has to offer. Visit, for example, the ancient palace of Knossos in the North of the island. Hike in the 17 km long Samaria Gorge, enjoy a drop of wine in the taverns of the port city of Agios Nikolaos, explore the fascinating traces of the former leprosy colony on the island Spinalonga or let the ruins of Gortyn impress you. Crete is always worth a visit! --> Crete cruises

Although it is such a small village, Katakolon is one of the places most visited by cruises to Greece. From here you set off for Olympia . The ancient sites were once places to pay homage to the Olympian God Zeus and his wife Hera. Today you will find a museum with many finds from the excavations and many ancient remains.

On Mykonos your ship arrives on the party island of the Aegean Sea. The beautiful view of the sea is set by the many bars along the promenade. When the sun goes down in the evening over the sea, the party on Mykonos starts. --> Mykonos cruises

What is typical of Greece?

Tasty olives and the typical Greek meat specialties pair in Greek cuisine with many vegetables. Mostly served grilled and garnished with fresh herbs , souvlaki, gyros and Bifteki are real delights. Not to be forgotten is the Greek feta cheese, which must come from certain products and a specific region of Greece in order to be allowed to bear this name. Those who prefer sweet enjoyment should try the Greek honey. To really end up in a restaurant that offers you the benefits of Greek cuisine, choose one that belongs to a fellow countryman.

But Greece  is not just about the food. The Greek feeling includes picturesque bays, wide pine forests and historic buildings , which make clear in many places the eventful history of the country.

Popular cruise lines for Greek Island cruises

Embark on board of Azamara Club Cruises and experience the 5-star flair of Royal Caribbean 's luxurious boutique hotel-style ships. A maximum of 700 passengers can be accommodated on board and thus the ships differ from the cruise giants. This also takes you to the smaller ports on the Greek islands.

Everything is included at Seabourn . Whether you want a butler, to book a personal trainer on board or order a glass of champagne at dinner. Above all, luxury at Seabourn fulfills all your wishes and you do not have to pay extra for it.

American Style awaits you at Oceania Cruises . On the English-speaking ships you go on a journey with the highest demands - and they are fulfilled. With a casino on board, a large crew and first class cuisine.

When is the best time to travel?

While winter is taking hold in central Europe, temperatures on the Greek islands are often still around 20 ° C. This will make you feel as if you have arrived in Spring on a cruise to Greece in Winter. Note, however, that there are occasional rainfalls. In Summer, the thermometer rises. And brings almost endless sunny days. Greece has something to offer in all seasons and is therefore always recommended for a cruise.

Getting there

To the port of Piraeus you can use the many flight possibilities available from European countries. You will land at the international airport in Athens and have three different ways to reach the port and your cruise ship.

A taxi from the airport is the fastest, but also the most expensive option. The bus is cheap and also brings you directly to the port, but you have to plan a travel time of about 90 minutes. The metro is slightly faster, and offers a more comfortable journey than the bus.

Why choose a cruise through the Greek Islands?

A true trip to Greece  is complete only when you tour its beautiful islands on a cruise. Cruises to the Greek islands are growing in popularity as they are a comfortable and relaxed way to travel.

A cruise to the Greek islands provides the opportunity for a thorough repose as all key decisions are made long before you embark. For example, the route is chosen in advance and the prices are known in advance (and include almost all expenses). Cruises to the Greek islands located in the Aegean Sea , such as Mykonos , Crete, Santorini , Milos or Rhodes, and others, provide the most important cultural mark among those organized on all seven seas. They range from four-day and three-night cruises, with visits to various islands, to authentic odysseys of more than a week!

See also the package for Athens, cruise through the Greek islands, with Delphi and Meteora in addition to the Turkish coast !

best greek island cruise 2023

Greek island cruises also combine Greek ports with others in Turkey such as Kusadasi . This Turkish port is highly frequented by cruises around the Greek islands due to its proximity to the ruins of Ephesus and its bazaar.

The cruise ships travel great distances at night, so the days are free for the passengers to go on excursions and enjoy all the services provided onboard; this brief contact with some islands, however, can be extremely useful when organizing future trips!

In general, the cruise season to the Greek islands opens in late March and ends in late October. One of these excursions could be the perfect opportunity to turn yourself into a true explorer!

A cruise around the Greek islands, the best option

The hospitality of the Greek people, the historical monuments, the gastronomy, the unique landscapes and the blue water beaches are just some of the attractive features that will be offered on our Greek island cruises. A feast of colours and sensations in this sunny corner of the world! During the cruise you can enjoy the sun on deck combined together with other fun and cultural activities.

Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Rhodes, Patmos or Folegandros are just some of the cosmopolitan islands that you can visit on one of our cruises. Each island has its own unique character, its own story to tell, giving us moments that we will never forget. But ... Why is a cruise the best option to see a place? When traveling on a cruise you can visit many different places at a single time, in a safe, comfortable, fully- and well-organized way, in the company of your family or your partner. Also, during a cruise, you can get to meet new people from different countries and make new friends.

best greek island cruise 2023

Whether you want to relax on dream islands, swim and enjoy the sun or visit places where ancient history has left its mark, we can help you live the dream: tours to museums and important archaeological sites, walks through typical Greek alleys, diving, sunbathing on golden sand beaches, enjoying sunsets from charming corners of the islands, dinners in traditional restaurants, and tasting the famous Greek gastronomy ... An exquisite balance between educational activities and relaxation.

In short, comfortable cruises around the Greek islands are the perfect option for cultural trips and for all tastes. Enjoy a one and only experience on a luxurious cruise and give your partner or family an exclusive and incomparable adventure. At the end of your cruise, what will remain are beautiful memories and powerful emotions that will last forever.

Greek Island Cruise: The Best Way To Explore Greece?

D o you hate packing and unpacking? I do too. I just got back from a 5-week trip around Greece. During the first part of my trip, I had to switch hotels every couple of nights. Ugh! So it was a relief to finally board the Celestyal Crystal and stay put for my eight-day Greek Island Cruise ! I can’t wait to share with you why I think this is the best Greek Island Cruise to go Greek Island Hopping !

8-Day Greek Island Cruise “Idyllic Aegean”

There are a few reasons why I picked this cruise line and itinerary for my first Greek Island Cruise:

  • The islands on the Idyllic Aegean were on my bucket list (Thessaloniki, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos).
  • Celestyal Cruise Line stays longer at each destination, so you can experience the islands after the crowds leave. This made a BIG difference!!!
  • They offer small group “ authentic excursions ” at many destinations, which is great if you want to have a more custom experience in Greece.
  • With 1200 passengers, the Celestyal Crystal is a relatively small ship, which I prefer.
  • I did the 3-Continent cruise with Celestyal in 2019 and loved it!!!

Greek Island Cruise Itinerary

As I was traveling with my 13-year-old niece, I found the Celestyal Idyllic Aegean cruise itinerary and tours offered a good mix of historical places, great food, beautiful islands, and stunning beaches that made this trip interesting for both of us. Here were some of the highlights at each of the Greek islands we visited.

Day 1: Piraeus/Athens

As we arrived the night before our cruise departed, we didn’t have time to explore Athens or Piraeus before we boarded the ship. I had been to Athens before, but it was my niece’s first time in the city, so we added a few days to explore Athens after the cruise.

We arrived on the ship pretty early, around 11 AM. There was almost no line to check in and we were on board the ship at around 11:15. After checking out our Junior Suite , we explored the ship and had a quick lunch at the buffet. By the time we returned, our bags were waiting for us in the room and we unpacked and got settled in before heading to dinner and watching the evening show “Mama Mia”.

I highly recommend getting to the ship early. Last time we did a cruise out of Piraeus, we checked in after lunch, and not only was the check-in process much longer due to long lines, but the whole day felt more rushed.

Starting in September, you might be lucky to sail on the newest ship of the Celestyal fleet, the Celestyal Journey . This 1260 cabin ship features 149 suites, two pools, seven restaurants, and eight lounges and bars. Can’t wait to sail on it, too!

Day 2: Thessaloniki

On our first stop, we explored the second-largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, on a food tour. This was an “authentic experiences” tour, and it was fantastic. We were a small group of 6 hungry travelers, ready to eat our way through the city.

Our local guide was fantastic and shared some interesting stories about Thessaloniki while taking us to some of the city’s best restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We tried things like traditional Greek coffee, bougatsa (phyllo dough pockets stuffed with either sweet cream or cheese), and a traditional meze spread at an ouzeria with all kinds of treats, such as grilled octopus, mussels, fava beans, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with goat cheese, and many more local delicacies.

After our delicious food tour, my niece and I strolled through the city and did some shopping before returning to the ship.

Day 3: Kusadasi/Ephesus

This was my second time in Kusadasi, but the first time for my niece, so we definitely wanted to see Ephesus. The crowds at the end of May/beginning of June were definitely more than the last time I visited in December, but I= think that the UNESCO Heritage site of Ephesus is a must – at least once.

My favorite place in Ephesus is the area of the Terrace houses, which are over 2000 years old. You have to pay an extra entrance fee, but it is worth it to see the stunning mosaics and wall paintings that are incredibly well-preserved.

Afterward, we visited a carpet factory. To be honest, this was not my cup of tea as the experience was very sales-y and I would have preferred some more free time in Kusadasi to explore.

Pro Tip: If you plan on buying sweets and souvenirs, don’t buy it in the shops in town. For many things, the prices inside the cruise ship terminal are much better ($8 vs $22 for a box of Turkish delight).

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete

Crete is the largest Island in Greece, and one of the biggest sights on the island is the Palace of Knossos . Knossos is often referred to as the first city of Europe, dating back to the Neolithic area around 7000 BC.

After spending our previous day in Ephesus, I thought it would be a good idea to skip another day of ruins and go on a scenic drive around the Cretian countryside to a picturesque mountain village instead.

Big mistake! Our tour was quite touristy and not as idyllic as I had hoped. Three big busses of tourists approximately doubled that small village’s population, making it a lot less “quaint.” We overheard several cruise ship guests who had gone to Knossos’s archeological site and LOVED it. I recommend choosing one of the Palace of Knossos excursions for this cruise stop.

Day 5: Santorini

Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island, and we were visiting at the beginning of the high season, so I was expecting big crowds instead of serene Instagram-able scenery. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy, but as all the other cruise ships were leaving, the island transformed and turned into the magical place that drew those crowds in the first place.

We started our day with a winetasting tour and visited two small villages. Our group was about 20 people, and we had a very nice experience without the crowds and saw some beautiful places in Santorini. We visited two wineries: Anhydrous Winery is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town of Fira and has excellent wines. But don’t miss Venetsanos Winery ! This winery has stunning views overlooking the whole caldera. What a spot to enjoy a glass of wine, no?

After our tour, we were dropped off near the cable car. As there were five cruise ships in Santorini, the wait time in the afternoon was approximately 1-1.5 hours. I felt bad for the other cruise ship travelers, as their visit to Santorini was cut even shorter by having to stand in line to make it back in time to the last tender.

Celestyal doesn’t leave Santorini until past midnight, so got to enjoy the island when it was a lot less crowded. We strolled up the coastal path to Imerovigli, a small village north of Fira to enjoy the views and then had dinner trying some of the delicious Santorini dishes , overlooking the sunset over the caldera. Definitely worth the splurge for this stunning view.

Our waitress said it was only about 10 more minutes by foot down the switchbacks from the restaurant to the tender boat harbor. That was a lie, ha! I attribute our 30+ minute descent to the fact that I was wearing flimsy sandals (the stones are very slippery!) and that we had to dodge the donkey droppings in the dark with flashlights.

Pro Tip: If you plan on walking up or down to the harbor, wear proper footwear and give yourself a little extra time before the last tender leaves.

Day 6: Mykonos

Since my niece and I enjoyed our food tour in Thessaloniki so much, my niece and I decided to do another one in Mykonos . This time, our group was a little bigger (17 people) but we had the chance to try some delicious food on this tour as well, while also getting to know the port city of Chora.

Mykonos is known as one of the high-society party islands of the Mediterranean and we got to enjoy a little glimpse of it as our ship was again the last one to leave the port well past midnight. Most cruise ships left the island between 3-5 PM. After they left, Mykonos transformed similarly to Santorini and felt like a completely different island.

Day 7: Milos

I was really looking forward to Milos. My niece and I signed up to go kayaking, and I could not wait to see the bright turquoise water with white limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We were still able to kayak and had a fantastic time, but the grey sky turned the water into a similarly bleak color.

However, my niece and I still had a blast. Our guide showed us stunning beaches, hidden caves, and hot springs and even shared homemade snacks with us. It was my niece’s first time kayaking, and she did really well. I was super proud of her for trying something outside her comfort zone, and when we returned to the ship, she couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. What a great way to finish our Greek island cruise!

Day 8: Piraeus/Athens

Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it, we were already back in Piraeus, and it was time to disembark.

Greek Island Cruise with Celestyal Review

I am so glad I picked Celestyal for my first Greek isles cruise. The small ship, small group tours, and long time in port really made this cruise a perfect fit for me, as I am not a big fan of crowds and like to explore each destination a little deeper. Of course, each island deserves more than just a one-day stop, but I felt I got a good first glimpse of each cruise stop.

If you have limited time and want to see as much as possible and as many places as possible during your trip to Greece, then a Greek island cruise is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Seven different destinations in 8 days would not be possible in any other way.

Of course, a smaller ship like the Celestyal Crystal has not have quite as many amenities as some of those big cruise ships, but it still has everything you expect to find on a cruise ship, including spa, pool, jacuzzi, casino, evening performances and several restaurants. And since there is no sea day and the time in port is so long, I wouldn’t have had much time to take advantage of those amenities anyway.

On the other hand, a smaller ship and longer time in port also means that it is less invasive and disruptive for the locals. Yes, they depend on tourism, but when the roads are so busy that even emergency vehicles can’t get through, you can see the dark side of mass tourism. As we had more time in port, we also had more time to shop, eat, and drink at each destination, supporting the local economy. Celestyal Cruise Line is a Greek company with headquarters in Piraeus, so even the money for the cruise tickets goes back into the Greek economy.

If you are looking for a small ship Greek island cruise that lets you maximize your time at each cruise stop and want to avoid the big crowds, then Celestyal is for you. I highly recommend them and can’t wait to cruise with them again!

Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.
