8-Day Cairo, Aswan, Luxor & Alexandria tour
Queen Cleopatra - 7 days
This is non stop tour which allows you to see all of essential Egypt in just 6 days. Our tour guide Ayman and Holidays in Egypt as company were excellent. We did the extras of Abu Simbel and Nubian village. We also did the flight option down to Aswan at the start which was definitely worth it. The sleeper train is an experience not to be missed.
- River Cruise
Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise
Well recommended.. From the pick up at the airport to the drop off 9 days later everything went as planned. We visited some amazing places. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. I strongly recommend you buying a few extra days and then you can do some of the optional tours. A once in a live time experience that I will never forget 😁😁🙏😎

Best guided tour couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Mo was a fountain of information you can tell he’s passionate about Egyptian history and culture. He diligently made sure the group total experience was above satisfactory. Highly recommend!

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included
Amazing! It was all I expected and more. Harry, Gabe, Ahmed and the entire crew on board the nile cruise went above and beyond. I can't recommend them enough and I'll definitely be back!
Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise
Our guided trip through Egypt was good for the first couple of days with 2 different guides and then we meet Mina Malik in Luxor and the entire experience we all had was elevated to a brighter, more fun and fullfilling experience. Mina is a beautiful soul and an outstanding person, his knowledge and calmness and willing to go over and above is very rare in my experience of how people are in today's times. So this being said I highly recommend Mina Malik for everything he endeavours in the future
Felucca Odyssey (5 & 4 Star Hotels)
This tour covered so much of Egypt which was what we were looking for. The sleeper train was a very unique experience which my partner and I both really enjoyed! Our guide Mo made our experience that much better. He has the knowledge and personality to make this tour one to remember! We had a very diverse group in ages but Mo was able to bring us all together and everyone felt very included on the tour. I have been recommending this tour to everyone since we have returned home! Thanks to Mo for making it an experience to remember!

Goddess Hathor - 8 Days (5 stars)
Very well organised tour with carefully selected hotels, lots of optional activities and great personalised approach from our tour guide Anas who was excellent! Already looking for other destinations with this operator.
9 Days Nile Jewel (Cairo, Cruise, Hurghada) Superior hotels
Facilities were excellent. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Using foreign Wi-Fi can be tricky, get a local SIM card. Hotel taxis are expensive; try Uber instead.
Egypt Nile Jewel
Medhat was great- saw everything and more.
Egypt: Boats & Bazaars
Exactly perfect - your guide was amazing, group was phenomenal!
Egypt Adventure
There were a lot of extra costs that think would be better included. Too much time spent travelling but that was what I signed up for so not criticising you guys but would not recommend to a friend for that reason. Hotel in Cairo very average in terms of rooms but service helpful. Camel ride was a bit of a joke given it’s brevity. I found the food generally disappointing in Egypt as too westernised, the best meals as far as I am concerned were definitely the ones with families and on the felucca
Footsteps Of The Pharaohs - Included Internal Flights
An amazing experience.Good accommodations and very knowledgeable guides.Would definitely recommend to everyone.

Best of Egypt
This tour exceeded my expectations. The arcahealolgical sites, tombs and temples from 1000s of years ago are just jaw dropping. And then there were the pyramids. Egypt is a very safe country with lovely people. This tour has a good itinerary filled with activities and our CEO/tour guide Said was just extraordinary. Accomodation and transport were very good too. Highly recommend this for anyone planning to see Egypt.
What people love about Egypt Tours
The tour was well organized, offering a wealth of historical insights thanks to our outstanding guide. The group was both entertaining and cooperative, contributing to an enjoyable experience overall. While the accommodation was standard, some locations could benefit from a review. Nonetheless, I would happily book another trip with Vacations to Go due to their sincere approach to travel. Thank you for a fun time!
Great tour Hassan deserves all the praise in the world he’s an amazing guide!!
Husband & I enjoyed a 14 night trip to Hurghada & then a Nike Cruise. George was our cruise tour guide. We found him to be considerate & knowledgeable. He spoke excellent English & had a depth & breadth of knowledge on Egyptian history that only a person with a passion for their subject could have. George was an amazing guide & I would recommend him & the tour company 100%

The Best Tour Companies in Egypt
Egypt is a country that tops the bucket-list country for many travelers. It’s a country filled with incredible relics of ancient history , from the Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza, and offers tons of incredible activities for travelers of all walks of life. Floating down the Nile River on a traditional felucca, exploring the tombs of Tutankhamen and other pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, snorkeling and diving in the coral fantasyland of the Red Sea — there’s just so many amazing parts of Egypt to amaze and enthrall you.
These days, Egypt is a destination many travelers shy away from. Given that there have been some terrorist attacks targeting tourists over the last couple of decades and that people are still wary of the changes in government since the Arab Spring, those concerns are understandable.
However, since 2017, tourism numbers have begun to increase again. In fact, they are growing so fast they might hit an all-time record in 2019 or 2020.
Things have been changing for the better in Egypt and it’s now a safe country to visit for the intrepid traveler. That means it’s time to start planning your dream trip to this diverse and historic country.
While I am a huge fan of solo travel , distances between the most popular sights in Egypt are pretty far. You can expect to spend a full day or night traveling by road or rail between Cairo and Luxor, for example, so joining an organized tour can help you make the most of your time.
And it can also save you some money, too!
Tours in Egypt often work out to be cheaper than trying to put together your own trip as some will include domestic airfare for prices cheaper than you’ll be able to get on your own.
Taking a tour with a reputable company also ensures that you’ll have safe detours with someone who really knows the lay of the land and will keep you informed of any risks. Knowledgeable tour guides also make for a more interesting trip — which is why tours in Egypt are so popular.
Here is a list of the best tour companies in Egypt, offering everything from day trips around Cairo to multiday tours around the country:
1. Intrepid
Intrepid is one of my favorite tour companies in the world.
I’ve been on a handful of their tours over the years to destinations all around the world and have yet to be disappointed. Their local guides provide invaluable insight and they are dedicated to making environmentally friendly choices too.
And the company just hires really awesome people too.
In Egypt, Intrepid has tours that range between eight and fifteen days. To be able to see enough in just eight days, they fly you between Cairo and the south, so the cheaper trip is actually the 15-day one, which uses a mix of bus, boat, and train travel, starting around $1,200 USD. Intrepid also has some specialized offerings, with a nine-day trip for travelers aged 18–29, trips especially for families, and also one just for solo travelers.
If you’re keen to explore beyond Egypt, Intrepid also offers a range of longer tours that take in Jordan , Israel , and Palestine as well.
As a reader of this site, you also get access to deals and sales so click on over to their site and see what tours are on sale now!
2. Memphis Tours
One of the first tour companies in Egypt, Memphis Tours has been around since 1955. It offers a huge variety of tours – from half- or full-day tours in Cairo or Alexandria to snorkeling or camel-riding trips out of resort destinations like Sharm el-Sheikh, ranging between $35 and $90 USD per person.
They also offer a selection of cruises both on the Nile and on Lake Nasser. The popular Luxor-to-Aswan trip along the Nile can be made in a variety of pretty luxurious ships; prices are around $500 USD per person for a four-day trip.
Memphis Tours also offer fully organized multi-day trips that last between 3–15 days. Many of these take in the key sights, like the Pyramids, a Nile cruise, and the Luxor and Karnak Temples, and typically fly you back to Cairo. The costs vary depending on the extra activities involved but are pretty reasonable: small group tours covering the main sights from Cairo to Luxor start at $1,100 USD. They also offer some specialized tours, such as one specifically designed to accommodate wheelchair users.
3. Look at Egypt Tours
Look at Egypt Tours is another local company that offers both day and multiday tours. It specializes in having knowledgeable guides that make the history of Egypt really come alive, giving incredible insight into modern-day Egyptian life as well.
The company also has a sense of social responsibility too, using locally owned restaurants and hotels on all trips and hiring guides from communities throughout the country.
Look at Egypt Tours runs a variety of day trips out of the main centers, including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Sharm el-Sheikh, ranging in cost between $50 and $150 USD per person, depending on the destination and the group size.
Multi-day tours include lots of options too; these last around 8–10 days and cost between $1,500 and $2,000 USD. There are also some specialized trips, like a two-week archaeological tour, the perfect choice for any history buffs (or Indiana Jones fans!).
4. On the Go Tours
On the Go Tours has been running tours to a variety of countries for a couple of decades now, but it all started in Egypt, where the two founders met. The company focuses on sustainable travel and supports local communities, and it hires local guides who have studied Egyptology at a college level as well.
In Egypt, they run several great-value group tours, like an eight-day trip from Cairo to Luxor for $400 USD, which includes the Pyramids of Giza, the incredible Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the temples at Luxor, a two-night felucca cruise on the Nile, a visit to the Valley of the Kings, and more. Accommodations are more budget-oriented than many other tour companies, making this a great option for backpackers.
If your timing and budget are more flexible, you might also take a look at some of On the Go’s festival tours, timed to celebrations like the Abu Simbel Sun Festival or the King Ramses Sun Festival. These tours are typically around ten days long and range between $1,600 and $2,800 USD per person, depending on whether they include internal flights.
5. Jakada Tours Egypt
Jakada Tours is a smaller company that offers private tours as well as group trips with a focus on budget mid-range travel.
Trips covering many of Egypt’s highlights and lasting between seven and ten days range from $600 to $1,000 USD. If you’re on your second trip to Egypt or have some extra time, Jakada also offers a range of more unusual tours, like spending time at the Cairo camel market!
The company also makes sure its guides are really knowledgeable, not just about ancient history but modern Egyptian culture too, as well as all the best local tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your stay.
6. Exodus Travels
Exodus offers trips worldwide and has a reputable social conscience; they aim to give back to the local communities they are a part of. In Egypt, they support Animal Care in Egypt (ACE), and its tours often include an option to visit the charity’s facility.
Exodus offers a nine-day Nile cruise from Luxor, which is a good compromise between luxury and price (around $1,400 USD per person, all-inclusive), with a maximum of 20 passengers. The company also has a longer trip that takes in key sights like the Valley of the Kings as well as Alexandria; this two-week tour starts at $2,000 USD.
7. Beyond the Nile Tours
Beyond the Nile Tours is another Egypt-based tour company using local, highly educated guides with lots of historical and cultural knowledge. It offers three tours, ranging between eight days and two weeks in length; on all of them, you can be flexible with your budget, as some activities, like a balloon ride over the Pyramids ($100 USD), are optional.
All these tours kick off in Cairo with a full day exploring what we all dream of seeing — the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphnix — along with the Egyptian Museum to put the history into context. Then you’re flown down to Luxor and cruise from there to the Valley of the Kings, among other places. On the longer trips, you can choose to travel back north more slowly, or you can include several days relaxing at a Red Sea resort. Tour prices range from $1,200 to $1,400 USD per person, with some additional costs for extra activities.
As much as I love solo travel , planning a trip to Egypt is much easier with a tour company. While you probably know that you want to see the Pyramids, the Nile, and other historical sites, getting around is not that easy to organize in advance, so it’s good to have the local knowledge of Egyptian guides to make sure you’re both safe and getting the most out of your trip.
So whether you’re after a short tour hitting the highlights of Egypt in a week or have more time to explore the country a little more slowly or even spend some time relaxing at the Red Sea, you’ll find a tour company to help you out.
Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner or Momondo to find a cheap flight. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned. Start with Skyscanner first though because they have the biggest reach!
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
- Safety Wing (for everyone below 70)
- Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
- Medjet (for additional repatriation coverage)

Egypt - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips
Egypt, located in North East Africa, is one of the most popular African nations. You can marvel at the ancient pyramids of Giza , learn medieval history through the mummies, or visit the plenty churches and monasteries culminating from a rich Jewish and Christian heritage like the Saint Catherine's Monastery. Many people don't know that Egypt also offers great diving opportunities for the traveler interested in aquatic activities.
Tour Highlights
- Visit the Egyptian Museum in Cairo , that provides an ideal start when learning about some Egyptian artifacts of antiquity.
- Cairo in particular offers a wide variety of coffee shops. In fact, going to one is a great way to get acquainted with some of the locals.
- Check out the Cairo Tower. Why wouldn't you want to eat dinner on the top of the tallest structure in Egypt?
- Enjoy the nightlife. Egypt has integrated popular current western music surprisingly well into its clubs and bars. After enjoying some Trance, you're liable to hear a few Arabic tunes as well.
- Go to the Haram District that offers a great variety of outdoor adventures such as horseback rides and tours.
- Take a tour through the Nile River. Going to Eastern Africa, without at least seeing the longest river in the world, the Nile, would be nothing short of missing out.
Travel Tips
- While on a holiday in Cairo, Egypt's capital and one of its biggest cities, take precautions to keep your belongings safe. Pickpocketing, in particular, is a recurring crime. Best to leave your valuables at the hotel safe.
- Drink bottled water. Egyptian tap water is not recommended for regular daily consumption.
- Tourism offices can be the source of plenty of information for inquiring travelers.

19 of the best Egypt tours
Get to the heart of egypt on an organised tour, whether you want to walk in the footsteps of pharaohs, take a cruise down the nile or scuba-dive over coral reefs in the red sea.
T he Great Pyramid, the Valley of the Kings, the Nile, the Red Sea — these very names are redolent of grand adventures and the golden age of travel. Egypt has so many knock-out sights, it’s hard to know where to begin. A tour operator will help you make sense of it all and plan your time most wisely, leaving you free to concentrate on enjoying yourself.
There are myriad options, whatever your time, budget, group size and interests, though almost all will include some sort of sailing trip down the Nile. Most will also provide expert local guides who can bring the ancient history of the country to life and organise day-to-day logistics. Be sure to check what’s included in the itinerary when booking; some will cover everything except gratuities and travel insurance; others will sort out domestic travel and accommodation but otherwise leave you to your own devices.

1. Slow boat to Aswan, Wild Frontiers
Allow life to really slow down on this unique ten-day trip along the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, with four nights spent on a private houseboat. You’ll visit the big temple complexes, including Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, but there are a load of attractions included that aren’t on traditional itineraries, including Daraw camel market and the ancient stone quarries at El Silsila. There’s also an emphasis on local life away from historic sites, with stops at small villages on the riverbank likely to be a highlight. The rate doesn’t include flights.

2. Egyptian family adventure, Exodus
Riding a camel in front of the pyramids, catching a sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan, sailing on a felucca down the Nile, watching a light show at Karnak temple, snorkelling in the Red Sea — what child isn’t going to like that? These are some of the activities on offer as part of this nine-day family tour of Egypt, with tour guide, flights and meals included. The itinerary packs in a lot but there’s still plenty of time for you to explore on your own or to relax; another bonus for families is that all the hotels have swimming pools.
Group size 8-20 Price ££
3. Explore Egypt, Intrepid
With 15 days at your disposal, you cover a lot of ground on this small group tour run by Intrepid in conjunction with Lonely Planet. You’ll start in Cairo before heading down to Luxor and Aswan for temple visits and a Nile river cruise on a felucca; you’ll also get to relax on the Red Sea, and head to the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. One of the highlights is a night spent at a homestay in a Nubian village near Aswan. Note that there is a lot of free time on the itinerary, and you’ll need to pay for entry into any sites you visit on your own; flights are also excluded from the price.
Group size 1-16 Price £
4. Dreams of Egypt, Wendy Wu
Two of the many highlights on this 11-day trip are the means of transport you’ll use to get between locations. There’s the first-class sleeper train you’ll take from Cairo to Luxor, having already visited the pyramids, old Cairo and Alexandria; and there’s the boat you’ll call home for four nights as you cruise between Luxor and Aswan, hopping on and off to visit historic sites along the Nile valley. Before flying home, you’ll get to see the pyramids again — this time at night, to enjoy the Sound and Light show. All guides, meals and flights are included.
Group size 8-18 Price ££
5. Family Egyptian Sphinx, pyramids and Nile river, Explore!
This is the sort of family trip that’ll form life-long memories for you and your kids. You’ll visit all the famous sights you’ve heard about, including the pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings, and you get to experience a proper adventure along the way. Likely highlights for your children are spending the night sleeping on the deck of a felucca, playing with local kids in a Nubian village and snorkelling over the reefs at the Red Sea. The pace is geared to family life — not too long spent at historic sights, with time left for your own pursuits or the hotel pool on most days. Flights are not included.
Group size 4-20 Price £
6. Classic Alexandria mini adventure, G Adventures
With only three days, what can you do in Egypt? Quite a lot, as it turns out. G Adventures has a three-day itinerary that whisks you from Cairo to Alexandria and back again. You’ll spend time in Coptic and Islamic Cairo, go on a food tour through the city, take a felucca ride down the Nile, have a seafood lunch by the Mediterranean, and visit a Roman theatre and catacombs in Alexandria. As flights aren’t included in the rate, this could be a good option to tag on to the beginning or end of a longer holiday in Egypt.
Group size maximum 15 Price ££
7. Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Aswan, Riviera Travel
Home for 14 nights is the MS Mövenpick Darakum, which, with 52 cabins, is one of the larger boats to take to the waters of the Nile. Unlike most tours, you’ll journey on board all the way south to Aswan from Cairo, rather than start from Luxor. You’ll also stop at a number of sites not normally covered on other itineraries, including the temples at Dendera and Abydos and the ruined city of Amarna. There’s plenty of leisure time, too — we recommend spending this lying on a day bed on the sun deck and watching life drift by in front of you.
Group size maximum 50 Price ££
8. Egypt: Ancient wonders of Cairo and the Nile, Cox & Kings
Four of the nights on this eight-day itinerary are spent on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, a supremely comfortable 32-cabin boat complete with swimming pool, sun deck, library and games room. You’ll spend the days drifting down the Nile in the company of expert Egyptologists, who’ll give lectures on board and accompany you on the frequent trips to ancient sites along the river, including the Valley of the Queens, Philae Temple and Karnak. The trip is bookended with time in Cairo, with visits to both the pyramids and the Egyptian Museum.
Group size maximum 18 Price ££
9. Felucca odyssey and Dahab explorer, Travel Talk
You’ll visit more sights than you knew existed on this 13-day tour, which takes you from Cairo down the Nile to Luxor and Aswan and on to the Sinai peninsula. The pyramids, Sphinx and the more popular Nile valley attractions are all here, alongside a good number of lesser-visited temples. After such a packed itinerary, you’ll appreciate the three days spent at the laid back Red Sea resort of Dahab. There are options to add extra activities to the tour, including diving, quad-biking and camel treks. You’ll also need to budget for flights and most lunches and dinners.
Group size 12-42 Price £
10. Egypt and the Red Sea for teenagers, On the Go
Covering Cairo, the Nile valley and the Red Sea, this is a family-orientated trip that covers some of Egypt’s best experiences. Throughout, there’s a balance between activities that parents and grandparents might prefer (temple and museum visits) and those more geared towards teenagers, such as snorkelling and water sports. Camel rides and felucca trips are guaranteed to bring all together. There’s free time built into the schedule each day, and all the hotels have pools or beach access, should you just wish to relax. You’ll need to factor in extra money for flights, entrance fees and guide tips.
Group size 4-18 Price £
11. Ultimate Egypt: Culture on the Nile, Black Tomato
This tour covers the traditional highlights of the Nile: Cairo, Aswan and Luxor. But it is so much more than that. The magic lies in the small, unique moments experienced along the way. These might be a sunset camel ride along the west bank of the Nile near Aswan; joining a local family for an Egyptian feast at their home in Luxor; meeting master craftsmen in Cairo’s Khan el-khalili market; and taking an after-hours tour of the Egyptian Museum. Black Tomato suggests six days for the tour but can tailor to your requirements; flights are excluded from their rates.

12. Taste of the Nile, Original Travel
You’re not going to get much closer to a true Agatha Christie experience in Egypt than by boarding the very same ship that took her down the Nile in the 1930s: the SS Sudan. The 19th-century steam ship has been restored to its original full glory, with teak decks, belle époque decor and period fittings. The five days on board, drifting from Luxor to Aswan, are just one highlight of the ten-day trip, which also includes guided visits to the Great Sphinx and pyramids of Giza, the holy city of Abydos and the temples at Edfu, Kom Ombo and the Valley of the Kings. The tour includes meal, guiding, all flights and the services of a local concierge.

13. Cairo and beach, Audley Travel
If you’ve never thought to combine a city and beach break in Egypt, think again. Audley Travel has an 11-day itinerary that allows you to experience all the cultural highlights of Cairo, including the pyramids and the Khan el-khalili market, with six nights at a Red Sea resort. Here you can do as little or as much as you’d like — taking a day trip into the desert for a camel ride, learning to dive, or simply heading to the spa. There’s plenty of free time in both destinations (though note you’ll pay extra for activities outside those scheduled). Flights are included in the rates.

16. Ultimate Red Sea, Blue O Two
Dive specialists Blue O Two aren’t exaggerating when they call this itinerary the “ultimate Red Sea”. For ten days, you’ll live aboard the Blue Melody, a 26-capacity vessel with twin and double cabins. The boat travels from Hurghada around the coast to remote off-shore locations near Sharm El Sheikh, with several dives planned for each day. There’s a chance to see dolphins, sharks and shipwrecks and explore marine parks. Note that this is for experienced divers only; you’ll need to have 30 logged dives under your belt to book. You’ll also need to sort out your own flights.

There’s time to enjoy life on the boat in between visits to temples and other on-shore attractions, accompanied by expert Egyptologists. The land-based accommodation is also pretty special, and might include the historic Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Legend Cataract in Aswan. Rates exclude flights.

18. Classic Nile, Abercrombie & Kent
If an Egypt tour to you means the Nile and the ancient pharaonic sites along its banks, the classic Nile itinerary offered by luxury operator Abercrombie & Kent has your name written all over it. The five-night trip takes you between Luxor and Aswan, with most of that time spent on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, a beautifully designed boat with 32 cabins, all with river views. An expert guide will help bring ancient Egypt to life on the many shore excursions to temples and ruins. The tour also includes a night at the Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor and a felucca sailing trip, but excludes flights.

19. Nile cruise, Nour el Nile
Here’s something really special — the chance to sail down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan on exquisitely designed dahabiyas, or houseboats. There are six to choose from, and each is beautifully decorated with large decks and comfortable social spaces. The five-night itineraries skip the more popular temple complexes in favour of smaller and less-known sights, so you feel like you’re making fresh discoveries every day and don’t have to battle crowds. A staff of 15 is on hand to make your trip as relaxed or as educational as you’d like.

The cost of a trip to Egypt can vary widely based on factors such as the duration of your stay, the type of accommodation, activities, and personal spending preferences. On average, a mid-range budget for a week-long trip could range from $800 to $1,500 per person, excluding international airfare.
The best time to visit Egypt is during the fall (September to November) and spring (March to May) when the weather is moderate, and tourist sites are less crowded. The winter months (December to February) are also popular, while the summer months (June to August) can be extremely hot.
In general, Egypt is considered a relatively inexpensive destination for holidays, offering affordable options for accommodations, meals, and local transportation.
Yes, most travelers need a visa to enter Egypt. Visitors can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports or apply for an e-visa before traveling. Travel in Time
The sands of the desert shift underfoot. The sun climbs high into the Egyptian sky. And the great Pyramids of Giza shimmer in the distance. There you stand in awe before the power and ambition of an inspiring civilization. In this legendary place, explore thousands of years of history while experiencing a thriving culture. Look to the past and keep an eye on the future – the great monuments reveal something different to each traveler. Discover the world of the ancient Egyptians as you visit one incomparable site after another.
Destination Must-See's
Located on the banks of the Nile, Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa. Here, visitors find something for everyone: beautiful views, good climate, and welcoming locals that make any activity lots of fun. You can enjoy the arts, go for walks down the Nile promenade, or visit the pyramids.
This is Egypt’s sunniest southern city. The town is small enough to walk around, and life there is slow and relaxing. Aswan is in a perfect location along the Nile where visitors can watch sailboats passing by or dine in a floating restaurant. Every night, dancers and musicians perform in the cultural center.
Giza is the third largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River southwest of Cairo. The most famous attraction in the city of Giza, located on the Giza plateau, is the pyramids. Also on the Giza plateau you can see the Great Sphinx and perhaps ride a camel.
Abu Simbel:
The archaeological area of Abu Simbel consists of two temples. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside as a monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II and queen Nefertari. The temples were saved when the rising waters of the Nile threatened, and were raised higher for protection in 1968. In the innermost shrine seats statues of the gods Ptah, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramses II and Re-Horakhte. The temple is so precisely placed that on February 22 and October 22, the first rays of the morning sun shine through the entire temple and illuminate the four gods.
Destination Must-Do's
The pyramids of Egypt are true wonders of the ancient world. They were originally built as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens. Some believe that they had sloped sides so the pharaoh could symbolically climb to the sky and live forever. Today there are over 100 pyramids of all different shapes and sizes in Egypt, as archaeologists continue to uncover and identify previously unknown pyramids.
The Sphinx has been a symbol of Egypt for thousands of years. With the body of a lion and the head of what is generally believed to be Pharaoh Khafra, the Great Sphinx of Giza symbolizes strength and wisdom. For centuries, visitors have included poets, scholars and adventurers seeking knowledge about its history and the secrets it might hold.
Today, the boy king is one of the best-known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Yet, from the time of his mysterious death at 19 until the year 1922, he was relatively unknown until his tomb was finally found. The entrance was covered with debris, but the inside was completely intact along with murals and so many artifacts that it took ten years to catalog them. Many of the artifacts travel the world on exhibit and provide insight into the fascinating ancient Egyptian civilization.
Camels in the desert:
Humans have used camels for transport for thousands of years. Built for traversing the desert, they can carry about 500 pounds, can go up to six months without food and water, and can easily trek their way through sandstorms. They are herbivores with tough, leathery mouths who can eat prickly desert plants that most animals cannot. When water is available, camels rehydrate faster than any other mammal and can drink up to 30 gallons at a time in just under 15 minutes.
Expert Advice
No one drinks the tap water in Egypt – not even the locals – so be prepared to buy lots of bottled water.
You should definitely pack comfortable walking shoes, preferably with crepe or rubber soles, as well as a hat for sun protection, and swimwear for free time when on the cruise. Please note that dress in the Egypt is conservative; however casual touring wear such as shorts and tee shirts are acceptable for tourists, though you may feel more comfortable in long pants or long skirts. Linen is recommended so as to protect you from heat and sun.
When I am traveling here I like to keep some cash on hand. I’ve found that many Egyptians rely on tips for the majority of their income.

Can i drink tap water in Egypt?
Don't drink the tap water - it is highly chlorinated. However, with enough time in Egypt, you could potentially grow accustomed to the water. This doesn't mean that the tap water is polluted, it simply means that you are not used to it, and you might get stomach problems. This happened to most people when they visit a country for the first time. They were simply not used to water there. It's a similar situation here. It is advisable to drink Bottled water during your entire holiday. That is why it is strongly advisable that you don't drink the tap water, and use it only for washing and brushing your teeth.
What is the best time to visit Egypt 2024 ?
Enjoy Egypt Tours From September until March. It is the perfect time when the weather is good and mild. From September until mid-November, when it is very nice and the temperatures are pleasant for all activities - around 25 C to 15 C. mid-Nov until the end of February is wintertime when temperatures during the day are around 12 or 15 C, and at night can drop to about 7 or 8 C. In March and April, the weather is still so nice and travelers can enjoy the Easter vacation. From May to September is the summer season. Spending summertime in a desert climate does not appeal to most travelers. Average daytime temperatures hover in the high 80s and low to mid-90s, although they can jump up into three digits in the South as in Luxor and Aswan. Summer is really hot here, prices go down and it is a good chance for travelers with a tight budget.
How is the weather in Egypt?
It is usually hot and sunny. winter falls between November and January, and the peak of the summer months is between June and August. Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) at night. In the Western Desert. Cairo and areas of the Nile Delta may experience a few rainy days during winter. Summers can be unbearably hot, especially in the desert and other areas of the country's interior. In Cairo, average summer temperatures regularly exceed 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), while the record high for Luxor and Aswan, popular tourist destinations on the banks of the River Nile, is 110 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius).
Is Egypt safe to travel to ?
Safety and security are our first and foremost concerns! Egypt is a very safe country with a low crime rate. Now with the coronavirus outbreak, accommodations and sightseeing nationwide have finalized sterilization and disinfection in light of the Egyptian government's efforts to implement precautionary measures against the COVID-19. In addition, our company has followed the same procedures to make all our staff, guides, and drivers are well-trained with the current events to prevent and stop the spread of this outbreak. Traveling the world is a joyful experience and we want to do our part to keep the anticipation stress-free.
What are the best things to do in Egypt?
There are many things to do in Egypt during your visit depending on your interests and character. Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan Nile cruise must be your first priority if you are a history and culture lover. You must visit the pyramids of Giza, enjoy a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan and enjoy visiting the most important tourist attractions in Luxor and Aswan. You can visit the city of Hurghada, Marsa Alam, or Sharm el-Sheikh Red Sea for relaxation and enjoy many activities there such as diving, snorkeling, sunbathing, or swimming. You may like to go on a safari trip in the western desert if you are an adventurer. Many other activities are available in every single Egyptian city
Should I visit Egypt during Summer?
The high season for tourism is all year with winter and spring being peak season for cultural travels with lots of sightseeing. Weather in Egypt is perfect for many kinds of tourism, and if coming in June, July, and August, head for the seaside resorts. Those months are very warm with temperatures that can reach around 45C. and the humidity is about 70 to 80%, but it is bearable with the sea and large swimming pools nearby. So the period of the high summer season is also a bit busy as hotels fill up with tourists from all over the world looking for a bargain, lots of sunshine, diving, snorkeling, etc. It is also a primary vacation time in Europe. If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. You will definitely need good sunscreen and a lot of liquids to drink with a nice hat on your head. Summer is a good time for people looking for good rates in accommodation and other services.
What is the dress code in Egypt?
Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.
How to get visa to visit Egypt?
You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. You can also apply for E-Visa via the official electronic visa portal: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg
How many days in Egypt is enough?
Your Egypt Tours travel agency recommends two weeks so that you can enjoy the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan, explore the sights of Cairo, and relax in the Red Sea islands and nature reserves.
What is the best Nile River cruise?
There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet
When is best time of the year to travel to Egypt?
The best time to visit Egypt is generally from October to April where it is suitable for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
What destinations are included in Egypt travel?
Egypt travel usually have guided tours to archaeological sites, museums, and historical landmarks. Also have optional activities may include hot air balloon rides over Luxor, snorkeling in the Red Sea, or desert safaris.

Absolutely mind blowing. A definite must see. We flew from Aswan after I contact them, as I did not want to sit in car for hours with my 10-year-old daughter. Just so much history and ancient love. You cannot miss this one thing if you are in Cairo. The rocks are just HUGE, so special.

The best time to go to Egypt to avoid the heat and crowds
Mar 12, 2024 • 4 min read
There's always something incredible to see or do in Egypt, no matter which month you visit © Lizavetta / Shutterstock
Tourism in Egypt is bound by the seasons. While only the hardiest want to troop through temples during the scorching heat of July and August, Egypt’s mild winter brings in flocks of visitors to flop on the beaches, gawk at Giza’s pyramids and cruise the Nile.
A happy medium can be reached by traveling during the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring when the press of fellow travelers isn’t as intense at major sites and daytime temperatures hover at manageable levels.
Read on for the best time to visit whether you're heading to Egypt to sightsee, go scuba diving or cruise the Nile.
March to May plus September are the best for avoiding crowds
Traveling during shoulder season often brings the best of both worlds. Major monuments aren’t as packed and there’s usually an accommodation bargain or two to be had.
Daytime temperatures can still be very hot in May and September so shoulder season travelers sensitive to heat (and families traveling with little ones) would do well to aim for March, April or October instead.
The weather is generally bearable so you can spend an entire day outside from about late-September into October. This is really Egypt’s best travel season. It's also a good time for diving. The light along the Nile is at its most soft and clear – great for photography in Luxor and Aswan – while in the Western Desert oases, the date harvest is in full swing.
The sand-loaded khamsin wind begins blowing in March, and the resulting sandstorms can disrupt travel and occasional ground flights; prevent feluccas from sailing in Aswan; and make sightseeing impossible due to low visibility. Add an extra day or two into your itinerary in case plans go awry.
In April, the khamsin can still be an issue, but when it isn’t blowing this is a near-perfect month for Egypt travels. The warmer evenings make it particularly good for overnight felucca trips from Aswan and camping in the White Desert.
May is usually a good time for package-deals to resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam.
June through August is the best time to go diving in Egypt
The weather switches to sweltering as average high temperature hit 108°F (42°C). Luxor’s temples and tombs open at 6am so it’s still possible to beat the heat by being an early bird.
Expect to be greeted with an ironic “Welcome to Alaska!” in Aswan. Unless you’re made of extremely tough stuff, it’s best to skip the Western Desert.
Summer is when serious divers head to Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast. They’re willing to take the baking heat on land in return for the payoff of calm, warm sea conditions and fantastic underwater visibility. Although Egypt can be dived year-round.
Just to flip the low season rule, summer is the peak domestic-holiday period along the Mediterranean coast as half of Cairo decamps to the beach. Yes, it’s still boiling in Alexandria but at least there’s a breeze.
October to February is best for milder weather in Egypt
In the Northern European winter, many travelers (and tour groups) escape the gray skies back home to bask on the beaches of Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast this time of year.
You'll find decent weather across most of the country, although in Cairo and Alexandria be prepared for rain. If you’re here to delve into Luxor’s glut of Pharaonic riches, winter brings blue skies and pleasant daytime temperatures to make long days of rambling around ancient ruins a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
This is also the most popular season to head into the Sinai or the Western Desert for outdoor adventures (from hiking to camel trekking), or to bask in the winter sun between learning to dive in South Sinai and along the Red Sea coast . Divers should note that sea conditions can get choppy on boat dives around December, but shore dives are generally fine.
In Cairo , the cooler weather makes November a good bet for long strolls to discover the capital’s madrassas and mosques. Be aware, it will get colder than you probably expect (especially else after dark) so you also need to pack something warm. Finally, expect high accommodation prices during the winter peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year.
Can I travel in Egypt during Ramadan?
The dates for Ramadan (the month when Muslims fast during daylight hours) change annually as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year.
If you’re traveling during Ramadan, be aware that tourist sites, along with most shops and services, operate shorter hours and many non-tourist orientated restaurants and cafes only open after sunset.
In Egypt, non-Muslims are not expected to observe the fast but visitors should politely show respect for fasters by being discreet – don’t blatantly swig from your water bottle or munch snacks on the street.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring
From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.
Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.
Do I need a visa?
Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.
What should I pack?
Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.
The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .
Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.
Can I pay by card in Egypt?
Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.
Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.
Should I join a tour or travel independently?
Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.
Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

Best time to visit egypt.
Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).
During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - perfect for snorkelling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.
Choose to escape the crowds by travelling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Culture and customs
Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humour to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.
As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.
Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.
Food and drink
With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.
Foods to try in Egypt
1. Hamam mahshi
A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.
2. Ta'ameya (falafel)
Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.
Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.
4. Ful medames
Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.
5. Pastries
Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.
Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment
Located in the north-east corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.
The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterised by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.
History and government
Recent history.
Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.
From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.
During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defence. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.
In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighbouring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.
Early history
Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians and travellers are all amazed by this civilisation which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion and natural disasters.
Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting of crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.
While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artefacts and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.
Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travellers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.
4. Terrific temples
Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilisation.
5. Holy mountains
Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.
6. Double happiness
Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.
7. Museum magic
Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewellery, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.
8. Roman ruins
The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheatre and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.
9. Colossal characters
Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.
10. The ancient heart of Cairo
Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.
Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewellery, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.
Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.
Things to buy in Egypt
You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.
2. Glassware
Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple, and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.
3. Cartouche
A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customise them by engraving your name.
Festivals and events
Eid al-fitr.
After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.
Eid al-Adha
Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.
Sham el-Nessim
Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.
Abu Simbel Sun Festival
As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

What to wear in Egypt
Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re travelling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-coloured clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.
Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.
For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.
While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.
It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.
No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.
Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:
Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.
Important Notes:
Specific Requirements: Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.
Visa Validity: The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.
Resources: For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.
By following this expert Egypt travel guide, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and insider tips to plan an extraordinary journey through Cairo and the heart of ancient Egyptian civilization, Nile.
Egypt promises to leave a lasting impression and will surely capture your heart. So, pack your sense of adventure, embrace the rich culture, and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to this bucket list-worthy destination.

The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.
Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.
"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.
NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.
As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.
The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .
The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.
A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places
Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.
While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.
Shocking problems
The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.
Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024
While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.
my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024
The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.
Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.
What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure
The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.
The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.
"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.
The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.
In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.
"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.
A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.
The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.
