Bristol Airport updates as snow hits South West

Snow has caused major disruption on Saturday morning

Bristol Airport has reassured passengers that flights are taking off as usual despite confusion that snow in the region had affected journeys.

According to the live departures board this morning, no flights had taken off. But it appears that was not the case and the tracker had not updated.

It comes as holidaymakers heading to Geneva awaited confirmation about their flight time earlier today.

One traveller took to social media to share their experience. They said: "25 minutes stood on a bus with no communication at the gate, five minutes then stood on the bus outside the plane with no communication.. on board and there’s no catering , the first officer and cabin crew had to go and find it due to a plane swap."

Snow began falling in the early hours, and the scenes in parts of Bristol reveal at least half an inch of snow has pitched - and it's still falling. However, some parts of the city only have sleet rather than snow.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow on Saturday morning - with a four-hour flurry, followed by heavy rain to wash it all away.

The yellow weather warning covers Bristol, Bath and North Somerset , extending east into north and west Wiltshire, and the whole of Gloucestershire up towards Birmingham. No weather warning is currently in place for the Devon and Cornwall region.

Forecasters are predicting that the snow won't last. The hour-by-hour forecast has snow falling pretty consistently until 9am this morning, and then it will turn to drizzle and slowly turn into rain.

Bristol Airport latest

Bristol Airport officials have confirmed that there is no snow at the airport this morning and no cancellations or delays to flight operations

Flights are starting to take off now

The first flights that were originally scheduled to take off earlier this morning have taken off. The most recent three departures were the flights to Grenoble, Dublin and Geneva, and there appears to be only small delays now.

A flight to Amsterdam that was due to take off at 9am is still boarding, and flights to Milan and Chambery that should be departing now are also still boarding, but it appears Bristol Airport has caught up with itself and the earlier delays.

In terms of arrivals, all flights are coming in ok, apart from one that is late in from Amsterdam

Delays to trains

Some services have also been delayed or cancelled at Bristol Temple Meads. The 8:03 service to Filton Abbey Wood has been cancelled.

Things to do in Bristol in winter: get cosy & explore museums!

An old town lined with cobblestone streets, a harbour with boats gently bobbing on the calm water, and one of the most impressive suspension bridges (with epic gorge views) in the country – there are so many things to do in Bristol.

Many of these attractions are completely visitable in winter, as plenty are inside, and there are also lots of walks that are perfect for brisk winter days.

Plus, the city comes alive in the festive period, with a Christmas market, ice skating rinks and services in the beautiful Bristol Cathedral.

But it’s not only worth heading to Bristol in the festive season.

Whether you’re visiting Bristol in December, January or February, there’s plenty to do! Read on for the best all-weather attractions in Bristol.

Weather in Bristol in winter

As Bristol sits in the south of the UK, it’s never too cold – it does snow in the city, but nowhere near as much as in other parts of Europe.

The weather usually hovers between 0-10°C throughout the winter months.

It can be quite cloudy and rainy , but you’re also fairly likely to have a nice brisk winter’s day with some sunshine!

I find that the Met Office usually has the most reliable weather forecast for Bristol.

Best things to do in Bristol in winter

Walking tours of the city.

There are quite a few walking tours of Bristol, and they run throughout the year.

Most famous is perhaps Blackbeard to Banksy Walking Tour , which tours the city centre and gives an overview of Bristol’s history and its most colourful characters, up to the modern day.

There are quite a few other tours that you can take in Bristol too. For example, this Guided Walking Tour of Bristol Old City and Harbour focuses on Bristol’s beginnings and the modern culture around its harbour, whereas this Brunel Guided Tour is all about one of the city’s most famous architects, Isambard Kindom Brunel.

Bristol Christmas Market

One of the South West’s longest Christmas markets (it runs from early November to just before Christmas day!), Bristol Christmas Market is the ideal place to get in the festive spirit.

Shop at the many stalls for items from nearby Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire farms and artisanal businesses, try some local produce or take a seat in the bar for a Bailey’s and hot chocolate or a mulled wine.

Vintage Winter Wonderland Millenium Square

Another attraction that keeps the festive spirit all winter long is the Vintage Winter Wonderland in Millenium Square.

Taking inspiration from the bigger Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, London, this smaller Christmas festival boasts rides like dodgems, plenty of food stalls and bars to enjoy a mulled wine!

Wintery walk in Ashton Court

A stone’s throw from the city centre sits the gorgeous Ashton Court .

I used to live a 20-minute walk from here and spent many a winter’s morning walking around the park, enjoying the woodland and saying hello to the resident deer!

It’s perfect for a sunset walk, although keep an eye on the closing times – the gates lock as early as 4:00 pm in the winter months.

Some of my other favourite places for winter walks around Bristol are Snuff Mills and Blaise Castle Estate. 

Cafe hop in Stokes Croft

When it’s cold outside, why not spend a day exploring Bristolian cafe culture?

In my humble opinion, the best cafes in Bristol are located in Stokes Croft.

One of my favourites is Cafe Kino , which is an all-vegan community coop that sometimes has events. You could also check out The Canteen, which has a similar atmosphere.

At The Well is a cosy cafe and launderette and Emmeline is a cafe/ plant shop!

When night falls, Stokes Croft is one of the best places to go out in Bristol – I love The Full Moon for live music and dancing.

Christmas carols in Bristol Cathedral

Bristol Cathedral isn’t as famous as others in the West Country, but it’s still worth checking out!

It’s usually free entry, and it has a history spanning back to 1140 AD. I actually graduated from university in this cathedral!

On select days in December, you can visit the cathedral for Carols by Candlelight , where you can sing along to classic Christmas carols and hear some festive bible verses.

Vintage shopping on Gloucester Road

Gloucester Road is a short distance from Stokes Croft and it’s home to the longest row of independent shops in Europe!

So, it’s the ideal place for some retail therapy – whether you’re looking for Christmas presents or want a pick-me-up to beat the January blues.

Even if it’s cold or rainy outside, the sheer amount of independent stores means that you can dash in and out of them quickly!

I love the vintage store RePsycho , the bazaar Allsorts and Emmaus Vintage antique store.

See the museums

There are a few excellent museums in Bristol which make the ideal winter weather activity. And you won’t need to worry about your budget when museum-hopping here – many of them are free!

They include:

• M Shed : A free exhibition about the culture and people of Bristol – and an excellent place to visit if you want to learn why Bristolians are so passionate about their city!
• Bristol Museum and Art Gallery : This museum and art gallery focuses on history in and around Bristol and the wider world. The permanent exhibition is also free entry.
• Blaise Museum : Situated by Blaise Castle, this is a historical look at people through the ages.
• John Wesley’s New Room : The oldest Methodist building in the world, this museum is located in the heart of Bristol City Centre.

Strap on your boots and go ice skating

While winter sports like skiing and snowboarding typically require a bit of travel, there are a few ice skating rinks that you can enjoy right in the heart of Bristol!

One of these is Planet Ice in Cribbs Causeway, which is a shopping mall to the north of the city. Planet Ice offers seasonal “Skate with Santa” and “Christmas Carol” sessions, as well as standard skating!

Learn about history at the Clifton Suspension Bridge

One of the best things to do in Bristol , whatever the season, is definitely to see the Clifton Suspension Bridge .

Dating back to 21st June 1831, this bridge was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (he actually won a competition to be the person to design it!) and spans over the narrowest part of the Avon Gorge, and when strolling over you can take in phenomenal views into the river below.

If the weather’s not great, pop into the Clifton Suspension Bridge Visitor Centre where you can learn all about its history.

Climb aboard the SS Great Britain

Climbing on board a boat might not be the first thing that comes to mind in winter, but the SS Great Britain is mainly indoors and is suitable for visiting year-round.

The SS Great Britain was a revolutionary ship when it was created; she was the largest and fastest in the world and used the most powerful steam engine.

She was used as a passenger boat, then a migrant clipper to take Brits to the US and Australia, and was then used to transport cargo.

She was ultimately abandoned in The Falklands, before a mission to “bring her home” in 1970, when she crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a massive floating pontoon, and to her current position in Bristol Harbour.

The boat is in five parts: an exhibition about its history, the top deck where you can enjoy epic views of Bristol harbour, the inside of the boat which has been made up to look like it did when it was a migrant clipper, and an exhibition all about Isambard Kingdom Brunel (as well as the bridge, he also built this boat!).

This is a must-do if you’re looking for fun activities in Bristol in January or February, and in December the boat usually has a Christmas theme!

Shop til you drop in Cabot Circus, the Bristol shopping quarter

Cabot Circus is in Bristol’s city centre and is home to the largest collection of shops in South West England.

You’ll find chain stores like Primark, The Body Shop and Bershka here; it’s ideal for Christmas shopping or January sales!

See Christmas steps (Bristol’s Diagon Alley)

While these steps aren’t actually anything to do with Christmas (the road was originally called Queene Street after Queen Elizabeth I visited Bristol in 1574), they’re still a fun winter place to visit in Bristol!

They’ve been coined “Bristol’s Diagon Alley” thanks to the fact that they’re charismatic and broody, with lamps dotted up the steps.

They’re the perfect place to get some wintery photos!

The steps sit in the Christmas Steps Art Quarter, which is an area full of independent stores and arts galleries, another great place for shopping in Bristol.

There’s a board game cafe here too called “ Chance & Counters ” which I think is a fabulous name for such an enterprise!

Cocktail classes

If the weather isn’t so kind while you’re in Bristol, how about a cocktail class?

This session will teach you all about mixology, and it includes three delicious beverages!

It’s a private experience, so it’s perfect if you’re with a group.

Enjoy a hearty pub meal

There are plenty of pubs in Bristol that serve delicious pub grub! A few of my favourites are: 

• The Mall : This Clifton Village pub always has a great selection of delicious British-inspired meals. 
• The Ashton : My favourite roast in Bristol, this is right by the bottom gates of the Ashton Court Estate. 
• The Ostrich : Right by the River Avon, this Butcombe pub is most famous for its beer garden, but it also serves a delicious supper menu with hearty British specials like pies and fish and chips. 

Festive food is on the menu at many of Bristol’s pubs throughout November and December! 

Spa Day at Bristol Harbour Hotel

If you need to warm up from the cold, why not opt for a spa package at one of the city’s best hotels? 

The HarSpa at Bristol Harbour Hotel has a range of packages, so whether you want a soak in the hot tub, a massage or a swim, there’s something here for you! 

Explore Bristol Aquarium 

Bristol Aquarium is the only one in the UK with a giant botanical house – that is a huge greenhouse-like garden that you can walk around in!

It’s also home to a range of sea animals, including rays, sharks and seahorses.

Although I’m not personally the biggest fan of aquariums, I recognise that they’re great places for educating and hopefully conserving our seas.

Wake the Tiger

Another fantastic winter attraction in Bristol is Wake the Tiger .

This is the world’s first AMAZEMENT park; an experiential art gallery, film set and interactive theme park, this exhibition blends the lines between real and fictional!

Take a wintery day trip

If you’re spending a few days in Bristol, then why not get out of the city for a day? There are lots of places around Bristol that have excellent year-round attractions. These include:

• Bath : With the Abbey, Roman Baths and the Thermae Bath Spa, there’s plenty on offer in Bristol’s neighbouring city – plus it’s only 10 minutes on the train! Read my Bath in winter guide for more inspiration.
• Exeter : Exeter sits just over an hour to the South of Bristol, and it’s home to the magnificent Exeter Cathedral, Medieval architecture like the House that Moved, and a gorgeous quay.
• Weston-super-Mare : The closest beach town to Bristol, Weston-super-Mare is perfect for a brisk winter’s day when you want to breathe in some sea air. Enjoy the world-famous Grand Pier, excellent museums and a street art trail.
• Quantocks : The Quantocks are an often-forgotten part of Somerset, but they’re perfect for a nature-based winter day trip from Bristol – I went here once in December and loved it. They’re a series of hills that peter out towards the sea, ideal for winter walks!
• Mendips : Another fantastic day trip destination, the Mendips sit just seven miles to the south of Bristol and they’re perfect for winter walks. Check out the Black Down hike which is one of my favourites.
• Glastonbury : One of the quirkiest towns in the South West, Glastonbury is famous for its Tor and high street with independent shops (and the festival, of course!).
• Wells: The tiny city of Wells has a magnificent Cathedral, the UK’s oldest purely residential street and the dynamic Bishop’s gardens.
• Cotswolds: A Cotswold road trip is wonderful any time of year – but in the winter, enjoy scenic villages with barely any other tourists!

Two-day winter Bristol itinerary

If you’re visiting Bristol in winter, here’s my suggested itinerary!

Day 1: Begin at the SS Great Britain and spend a couple of hours walking around the boat. Visit Bristol Cathedral and check out Park Street and the Wills Building .

Then, head to Whapping Wharf for lunch. After lunch, visit the M Shed free museum and take a walk around St Nick’s Market .

For dinner, head to Southville , check out some of the street art and enjoy dinner at Souk Kitchen.

Day 2: Head to the Clifton Suspension Bridge and check out the Clifton Observatory .

Then, walk/ uber/ bus through the leafy suburb of Redland to reach Stokes Croft and have lunch in Cafe Kino . Check out Stokes Croft’s street art and walk back via Cabot Circus ; check out the shops before circling back to Welsh Back and King Street , where you can enjoy dinner and drinks in one of the many pubs and restaurants.

How to get to Bristol

Bristol is easy to access by car, train or coach.

It sits on the M4 motorway, which connects to Wales and London, and the M5, which runs from Exeter to Birmingham. Read more about driving to Bristol here.

You can take a train from many cities across the UK to Bristol Temple Meads or Bristol Parkway, it’s main two stations.

Alternatively, Megabus and National Express coaches connect the city with destinations in the South West, London and other places in the UK.

How to get around Bristol

Although it’s hilly, Bristol is quite walkable. If you can’t or don’t want to walk, First Bus connects the city centre with destinations in the suburbs and beyond. Uber is also operational in Bristol.

Does it snow in bristol.

It does snow in Bristol, but it’s infrequent. Like many UK destinations, snow is becoming less and less common in the city.

When I lived there from 2020-2021, we only had one day of proper snow! So, if it snows on your winter trip to Bristol, count yourself lucky!

Is Bath or Bristol better?

Neither is better, they’re just different!

Bristol is bigger, and has a much more “waterfront” vibe with its harbour, and also has plenty of suburbs with different vibes.

It’s definitely the city to go for if you want to see quirky street art, go cafe hopping or have excellent nightlife! Plus it has a wider range of attractions for all ages.

Bath is much smaller and is famous for its Georgian buildings and Roman Baths. Both are great for history, but Bath’s is much more compact and is slightly more aesthetic (although I think Bristol is gorgeous too!).

What’s Bristol famous for?

Bristol is famous for its seafaring history, its incredible suspension bridge, being the home of Banksy, and more recently, it’s incredible nightlife scene.

Is Bristol worth visiting?

Absolutely! I feel like I spend a lot of time telling people how much Bristol has to offer – it’s my favourite city in the world for a good reason!

It has literally something for any age, with plenty of kid-friendly attractions, incredible restaurants, epic nightlife and centuries of fascinating history.

Plus, it’s a welcoming place, with locals keen to show all visitors how epic their city is!

There’s so much on offer in Bristol in winter – and you’ll tap into its immense history and culture after even a short visit.

More difficult, most difficult, extremely difficult, on-snow experiences, nordic/cross-country, snow conditions codes and definitions.

The following surface condition codes and definitions explain the type of snow surface reported at Bristol Mountain. Bristol Mountain endeavors to inspect trails and report conditions consistent with terminology descriptive of surface condition(s) developed by the New York Ski Industry Association, Ski Areas of New York, Inc. These are approved by Article 18, the New York Safety In Skiing law.

MG = MACHINE GROOMED.

BS = BARE SPOTS – Areas of exposed underlying trail surface NOT covered with sufficient amounts of any form of snow, ice or other skiable material. No skier should attempt to ski over or through any Bare Spot or Spots.

CO = CORN SNOW – Large ice-like granules, which are loose during above-freezing temperatures and which freeze together during below-freezing temperatures. Corn snow is usually a product of the above/below freezing cycle of temperatures typical of spring days. Large ice-like granules which remain frozen together in extended cold periods, or chunks of ice created by incomplete grooming or icy surfaces are not characteristic of corn snow.

FG = FROZEN GRANULAR – Granular snow which was once wet and which has frozen together forming a rather solid or crusty-textured surface. It can return to loose granular after thawing or being worked by a grooming machine or from the effects of skier traffic breaking up the crust. Frozen granular snow will support a ski pole stuck into it. However, if the pole makes ice chips and the surface will not support the pole, the surface is ICY.

HP = HARD PACK – Hard pack snow is a dense, compressed snow condition harder than packed powder and softer than ice.

IP, IS = ICE PATCHES, ICY SURFACE – Ice represents a hard, glazed surface usually created by freezing rain, or old surface snow melting and quickly refreezing again, or by ground water seeping up into the snow and freezing. Also may describe a very wet surface that has been skied into a smooth surface while above-freezing temperatures are existent and then rapidly dropping temperatures occur. When broken, ice breaks into chunks rather than granules. Patches describe localized occurrences of ice; surface describes a more prevailing icy condition on the slope.

LG = LOOSE GRANULAR – Loose granules similar to rock salt, usually formed after powder snow thaws, refreezes and crystallizes or an accumulation of sleet. Loose granular may also characterize surface conditions produced by machine conditioning of frozen granular or icy surfaces.

P = POWDER – New snow generally of dry and fluffy consistency. Will not make a snowball easily.

PP = PACKED POWDER – Loose powder snow compacted by rollers, drags or other mechanical apparatus or by skier traffic to a state which leaves little air space between particles. It is no longer fluffy, but it is not so extremely compacted that it is hard and icy.

SC = SPRING CONDITIONS – This term is used to characterize the wide variety of surface conditions which results from the alternate freezing and thawing of snow cover in spring weather. This term is used in place of other terms when the usual surface descriptions cannot accurately or completely describe the situation, that is, when no single surface type covers at least 50% of the skiable surface of a trail.

TC = THIN COVER – Indicates that the cover that currently exists will decline in quality due to skier traffic and may break through to the underlying trail surface. Thin Cover indicates that Bare Spots are anticipated to develop in the area during the day.

V = VARIABLE – A wide variety of conditions which cannot accurately or completely be described using usual terminology, such as when no single surface type predominates.

WG = WET GRANULAR – loose or frozen granular snow which has become wet and soft after a thaw or from a rainfall.

WP = WET POWDER – Powder snow that is wet when it falls (you can easily make a snowball) or dry powder that becomes wet as the temperature rises above freezing or is dampened by rain.

Lake Compounce reopens for 2024 season Saturday

BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) – Spring is here and Lake Compounce in Bristol is getting ready to re-open for the season!

The park is set to open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and will be throwing an opening celebration all weekend long highlighting the iconic Wildcat Roller Coaster.

Season pass holders will also be able to get into the park on opening day an hour early and be among the first to ride the historic coaster. Also, the first 250 guests will get a commemorative Wildcat coin

Visitors can also enjoy a full weekend of fun including meet and greets with Kyle the Crocodile, limited-time food offerings including Wildcat Chicken Tenders, rides on the all-new carousel cat and more.

• A federal judge in New Jersey rejected Johnson & Johnson's and Bristol Myers Squibb's legal challenges to the Biden administration's Medicare drug-price negotiations, ruling that the program is constitutional. 
• The decision is another win for the White House in a bitter legal fight with several drugmakers over the constitutionality of the price talks.
• The ruling also weakens the pharmaceutical industry's strategy of seeking split decisions in lower courts scattered across the U.S., which could escalate the issue to the Supreme Court.

In doing so, it could take a bite out of drugmakers' profits. Final negotiated prices for the first round of drugs subject to the talks, which includes one each from J&J and Bristol Myers, will go into effect in 2026.

J&J plans to appeal the decision, a spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC.

"This is a disappointing ruling for patients and America's leadership role in medical innovation," they added.

Bristol Myers Squibb did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ruling.

In separate lawsuits, the drugmakers argued that the negotiations are an unconstitutional confiscation of their drugs by the government and a violation of their right to freedom of speech. They also argued that the talks are an unconstitutional condition to participate in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.

But Judge Zahid Quraishi of the District of New Jersey wrote in a 26-page opinion that participation in the price talks and Medicare and Medicaid markets is voluntary.

The negotiations don't require drugmakers to "set aside, keep or otherwise reserve any of their drugs" for the use of the government or Medicare beneficiaries, he wrote. Quraishi added the talks don't force manufacturers to physically transmit or transport drugs at a new negotiated price.

"Selling to Medicare may be less profitable than it was before the institution of the Program, but that does not make [J&J and Bristol Myers Squibb's] decision to participate any less voluntary," Quraishi wrote. "For the reasons provided, the Court concludes that the Program does not result in a physical taking nor direct appropriation" of medications from the two drugmakers. 

J&J, Bristol Myers Squibb, Novo Nordisk and Novartis presented their oral arguments before Quraishi during the same hearing in March. That same month, a federal judge in Delaware rejected AstraZeneca's separate lawsuit challenging the negotiations. In Texas, a third federal judge tossed  a separate lawsuit in February. A federal judge in Ohio also issued a ruling in September denying a  preliminary injunction  sought by the Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest lobbying groups in the country, which aimed to block the price talks before Oct. 1.

A vigorous low pressure system moving through Nebraska brought the necessary ingredients together for a severe weather outbreak across the region. In the mid levels of the atmosphere (15,000-20,000 ft above the ground), strong winds and cold temperatures overspread a warm, moist air mass streaming north from the Gulf of Mexico to create the necessary instability and vertical wind shear for severe thunderstorm development. The supercells that produced the tornadoes across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa developed along a Pacific front that extended south from an area of low pressure that moved from central into northeast Nebraska during the day.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Live: Met Office's snow, sleet and downpour warning amid traffic delays

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the city, which is set to last until 3pm this afternoon

Bristolians are set to be hit with hours of heavy rainfall after the Met Office issued another weather warning. From midnight to 3pm today (Friday, March 1) Bristol is set to see heavy rainfall which could cause disruption on roads.

Forecasters have also warned of snow and sleet to hit the West Country today, including in the Cotswolds and Dartmoor. Flooding, difficult driving conditions and disruption to train and bus services are likely.

Heavy downpours predicted will keep temperatures low, with 6C being the highest Bristol will see today. The torrential rain will make it feel between 1° and 2° however.

Hail and thunder are likely in places with a chance of some snow mixed in at times, especially over the hills and high areas. The strong winds are forecast to peak between 9am and 1pm.

Much of the rain likely to fall in just three hours

A band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move north and east on Friday. 10 to 15 mm of rainfall is likely widely, with perhaps 30 mm in a few locations. With much of the rain falling in 3 hours some travel disruption is probable. Some snow is also likely to affect some higher routes and communities for a brief time.

M5 and M48 traffic delays

Here's the latest from Inrix:

One lane closed due to strong winds on M48 Severn Bridge in both directions between J2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road (Chepstow) and J1 A403 ( Aust ). Matrix sign set to 40 mph. A lane is closed in each directions for safety in case vehicles get blown into adjacent lanes.

Snow warning

On Friday, we can expect sustained heavy rain in much of the county and some of that could be sleety in the Forest of Dean. Temperatures up to around 5C and down to -1C in places.

Saturday is when that snow could fall in the Coleford area of the Forest of Dean and the Stow-on-the-Wold area of the Cotswolds. Temperatures could dip to -2C..

WX Charts also show snow could hit Bristol later today.

Met Office forecast

The Met Office has issued a 13-hour yellow weather warning rain across Bristol and the South West.

A mixture of bright or sunny spells and heavy downpours. Hail and thunder is likely in places with a chance of some snow mixed in at times, especially over the hills. Feeling cold in the blustery winds. Maximum temperature 7 °C. Showers remain possible this evening and overnight, these perhaps wintry over higher ground. Clear spells with patchy fog and frost developing. Breezy in the west. Cold with icy patches possible. Minimum temperature 0 °C.
