What is the best time of year to cruise around South America?

The seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, so the warmer months, from November to March or April, are the best time to cruise, which is when our Celebrity Eclipse will be sailing the region in 2024. 

The Galapagos is completely different, as the islands lie across the Equator. The Galapagos is a year-round destination, with far fewer variations in climate, and benefits to sailing in any given month.

How safe is it?

For Celebrity Cruises® and parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the safety of our guests and crew has always been our highest priority. We encourage you to leave valuables on board when you go ashore, and to use the safe provided in your stateroom for your valuables.   

As with any big city with lots of visitors, you should take precautions in places like Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Don’t carry your cell phone or wallet in your back pocket, and keep your purse and camera close to you. Do not leave your belongings unattended on a beach.

What are the typical ports of call on a South America cruise?

Celebrity offers a wide variety of South American cruises with many exciting ports of call. You could sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso with two ports of call in wild and beautiful Patagonia, as well as two in sophisticated Uruguay, and a day in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Or you could pick a similar itinerary that included the Chilean Fjords, an area of vast glaciers, narrow channels, and jagged peaks.

If you prefer a warmer climate, pick an itinerary that sails between sophisticated Buenos Aires and exotic Rio de Janeiro. You’ll also visit Buzios and São Paulo in Brazil, and Montevideo and Punta del Este in Uruguay.

South America is an enormous continent and you will see extremes of climate, geography, and wildlife. You might see whales around Puerto Madryn and Magellanic penguins in Patagonia. If you visit Antarctica, you’ll see gentoo and chinstrap penguins, leopard seals, and most likely, several kinds of whales. On the Drake Passage, you could spot graceful wandering albatross, the bird with the widest wingspan on the planet. Excursions in the Falkland Islands take you to look for five different species of penguin, while in Ecuador and Chile, you could see magnificent condors soaring on the thermals.

What should I pack?

A South America cruise could take you through many different climates. If you sail between Buenos Aires and Valparaiso, for example, you should pack for warm summer days and beach weather in the cities, and much cooler, windier weather in Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. If you are headed for Antarctica, you will need layers, fleeces, gloves, a hat, and a good waterproof jacket. If you’re traveling to Brazil, on the other hand, pack breathable fabrics and loose clothing for the tropics.

For the Galapagos, pack clothing in neutral colors that will protect you from the sun, as you could be out walking for hours at a time. You will need a hat, walking shoes, and a lot of space on your camera’s memory card as you will take a lot of photos. Wetsuits and snorkel gear are provided on board the ship.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Cruises to the Galapagos are less formal and there are no Evening Chic nights, as these are expedition voyages. In the Galapagos, for women, we recommend resort-casual attire (pants, skirts, or even casual dresses), and for men, a comfortable shirt and pants in the evenings.

Classic Galapagos: Central Southern Islands (Grand Queen Beatriz)

Overall, it was great. The guide Johan and the crew were nice and helpful, paying attention to safety. The ship was clean. The hot tub could be a little hotter. The shower handle was marked wrong, pointing cold for hot water, though we figured out on the 2nd day (another passenger told me). Meals were pretty good, but snacks served at the deck when we return from a day trip were the most enjoyable. Coffee/tea cups were not enough - I would have taken a personal mug if told in advance. The last night/morning harbored at Puerto Ayora was very hard for us. The choppy water caused us motion sickness, and we felt swaying for a few days after the trip.

Galápagos — North, West & Central Islands aboard the Yolita

My experience with G Adventures at the Galapagos Islands was fabulous. It was all I could imagine and more. Who would have thought that I would be swimming with sharks, penguins and turtles!!. Thank you Omar and crew of the Yolita for your most excellent direction with a local focus, conservation and preservation being the key to all our activities. We were fed well, and given all the comforts of home while being worked hard to fit in all the sights on our 10 day tour. I would most definitely recommend this trip to my friends and family. Ecuador are doing a sterling job in preserving this gem of the pacific.

The itinerary was a bit confusing at times - there were some things Intrepid hadn't updated or changed and some passengers weren't very pleased about it. Galápagos – West and Central Islands aboard the Reina Silvia Voyager

Booked as single but was then told I was to share the hotel room on the first and last nights. Had to get that straightened out and did but it never should have happened. Ship safety was very bad! No handrails on outdoor stairways at all, no bar in the shower to hold onto, making it unsafe to take a shower or walk around in rough water or during navigation. Itinerary was good, saw a lot of great wildlife. Fast paced though so if you’re looking for a relaxed time don’t book this one.

Great organisation and excellent staff

This trip was everything and more than I hoped for. Apart from some problems with Avianca airline which is out of Intrepid’s control, the trip ran smoothly and covered all the things it said it would. The scenery and wildlife were spectacular, the crew were very professional and the food was in abundance. Nothing seemed to be a problem to them. My cabin had one bed light not working that I reported and also the toilet seat was very loose making it interesting in rough seas! and there was a broken handle which had been hidden in the drawer none of which was an issue as I was lucky enough to have the cabin to myself. I would query the location of the hotel accommodation and ask why it is not closer to the historical town? EVERYTHING else was just perfect- really!

Machu Picchu is the main attraction in Peru, and is usually tacked onto Amazon River itineraries as a pre- or post-cruise land trip. In the Galapagos, activities are centered on nature and often utilize Zodiacs, kayaks and other water sports equipment to get as close to the wildlife as possible.

When is a Good Time to Cruise to South America?

The best time to visit South America also depends on where you are in the continent. If visiting Antarctica and Patagonia (the southern portion of South America and your departure point for Antarctica), for example, you'll go any time from November to March; December and January are the most popular months, because they see the longest daylight hours and most comfortable temperatures.

Destinations such as the Galapagos Islands and Amazon River, on the other hand, are accessible to cruisers year-round. Of course, each still has its own seasons with pros and cons. The most popular time to visit the Galapagos Islands is from mid-June to early September, when the temperatures are milder and the water visibility and quality is higher. Some visitors, however, might prefer to cruise between December and May, when the temperatures (both air and water) are warmer -- albeit sometimes unbearably hot -- and there is more sunshine.

High seasons in places like Rio and Cartagena, Colombia, are more synonymous with the Caribbean's. Rio, being south of the equator, means summer runs from roughly December through March. It is during those months you'll enjoy the most sunshine and warmest temperatures. Cartagena, on the flip side, sees different seasonal patterns. The months of December through March guarantee the best weather, with drier days and milder temperatures.

What are Popular Ports in South America?

One of the most popular South American itineraries you can take is known as "around the Horn," which explores the continent's Patagonia region. It begins or ends on one coast, dips down to Chile's Cape Horn on South America's southern tip, and rounds up to the other coast. A common route is Buenos Aires, Argentina (east coast) to Santiago, Chile (west coast), or vice versa, with stops along the way in cities like Montevideo, Uruguay; the Falkland Islands; Ushuaia, Argentina; Cape Horn; and Punta Arenas, Chile.

In the Galapagos Islands, which begin on Ecuador's mainland, highlights are less about the towns themselves and more about the wildlife you can see there. Espanola, a popular stop on these itineraries, is home to the famous waved albatross.

Amazon River cruises typically begin in major cities, then focus on visiting smaller, off-the-beaten-path villages along the river. Other itineraries might explore only along the west coast -- such as from San Antonio, Chile, to Cartagena, Colombia -- perhaps stopping in Lima, Peru, among other cities, and crossing the Panama Canal.

Easter Island also is a popular port of call on select cruises. Ships typically depart from Chile's mainland to the island, anchor off its coast, then take a tender (small boat) to land.

Where do South America cruises depart from?

Around-the-Horn cruises usually depart from either Buenos Aires or Santiago. Many Amazon River cruises originate in Rio de Janeiro, while those that sail the Peruvian Amazon, specifically, depart from Iquitos, Peru via Lima.

When cruising the Galapagos Islands, ships will depart either from the Ecuadorian cities of Quito (the capital) or Guayaquil.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
