Comfort Zone, a brand launched by the Davines Group in 1996, began as a study of the formulation of the most high-tech, superior-quality personal care products. Dr. Davide Bollati, the founder of the Davines Group and Comfort Zone, prides himself in discovering new and innovative uses for botanical extracts and plant-derived active ingredients. This decidedly scientific beginning led to the creation of a high-tech, all-natural line of skincare products.

Comfort Zone offers a new approach to Ayurvedic Theory, a philosophy that focuses on treating the person as a whole by caring for the mind, body and spirit. Comfort Zone, though, goes a step above Ayurvedic Theory by including professional-grade skincare for dramatic results while still treating the whole person. Comfort Zone aims to heal and correct from the inside out and the outside in, addressing internal and external stressors while improving the quality of life.

Comfort Zone identifies stress as the primary catalyst for premature aging in the skin. Think about what stress causes a typical person to do - lose sleep, skip exercising and eat all of the wrong foods. A person under stress denies the body adequate sleep, respiration and proper nutrition, which, in turn, leads to decreased cellular function, a dull complexion, acne breakouts, and eventually fine lines and wrinkles. By keeping stress in check with proper exercise, a balanced diet and a good night's rest, the skin and body regain vitality, function and glow.

Every aspect of stress management plays an integral role in the Comfort Zone regime - balanced diet, exercise, ample sleep, dietary supplements and, yes, proper skincare. Obviously a balanced diet and exercise cannot be sold in a bottle, so Comfort Zone provides a guide to optimal health inside and out with the SKIN REGIMEN Lifestyle Manual. This guide includes exercise tutorials, healthy recipes, and advice for treating the body and skin with care and respect. Comfort Zone offers instant relaxation with the TRANQUILITY line of products to soothe and comfort the skin and the senses. Bringing this new concept of Ayurvedic Theory full circle, Comfort Zone's complete range of skincare products for the face and body ensure youthful radiance and soft, supple skin for total rejuvenation.

Inspired by Travel: Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone and Staying There

Before I began doing any serious travel, a friend of mine made a New Year’s resolution that I thought was so good I decided to borrow it for my whole life, not just that year. She decided that her goal for the year was to go outside her comfort zone . When I left my home country to live, work and travel abroad for a few years, I often remembered this, and tried whenever I could to go outside my own comfort zone too.

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

It’s only now that I’m home again that I realize going beyond my comfort zone while traveling wasn’t just great while I was traveling — it’s actually a habit that’s brought me lasting benefits. It’s one more argument for the doubters who think that traveling long-term is just a way to avoid taking life seriously! Here are just a few of the ways that traveling expanded my comfort zone, forever.

comfort zone travel kit

#1: Talking to People

I used to be quite shy; in certain situations, I probably still am. When I started traveling, I soon realized that shy just wasn’t going to cut it. If you’re lost, you can’t expect someone else to come up to you and offer to find your hostel for you. If you need to find out which minibus will take you out to that place they filmed Star Wars in Tunisia, you can’t stand on the side of the road and hope it’s all magically figured out for you. You have to talk to people.

Even for people who aren’t shy, getting to know people while you’re traveling also gives you the skill of talking to people whose first language is different than yours. Whether you’re trying to make yourself understood in their language, or working out how to modify your slangy English so that they can understand you, learning these communication skills is a really valuable asset.

#2: I’ll Eat (Nearly) Anything

Pushing the boundaries of what food you’ll eat becomes a necessity when you’re on the road. When I first moved to Japan, I was perfectly happy with the raw tuna or raw salmon kind of sushi, but, for example, raw octopus was something I just didn’t want to eat. I soon discovered that Japanese restaurants back home had only portrayed a very limited version of the real cuisine, and there were a number of very challenging moments where I simply had to put strangely-colored, half-wriggling and very chewy objects in my mouth. My Japanese friends or colleagues would have been too offended if I hadn’t, and this situation forced me to eat whatever was put in front of me.

From that starting point, I soon found that most fears of food are purely because of lack of experience, and if someone else can eat it, you can too. I draw the line at some things (especially because I’m a semi-vegetarian) but in general, I’ll have a go at whatever you serve me.

#3: Living Without Home Comforts

It’s easy to get caught in the materialistic trap of needing a comfortable bed and a hot shower every day in order to survive. Or of having your favorite computer game to play when you’re bored, or a refrigerator full of snacks. But long-term traveling often deprives you of all these home comforts, and that definitely taught me that you don’t actually need all these comforts to enjoy yourself.

Take a Trans-Siberian railway journey as an example. I didn’t get on one of those fancy tourist trains, but just the regular passenger train that plugs its way across Russia, taking an entire week to get from Vladivostok to Moscow. There were no showers or bathing facilities on this train, and no hot water in the toilet cubicle either — although there was a samovar of boiling water at the end of each carriage. I could give myself a quick sponge-down each day, but there was definitely no chance to wash my hair. All of that really didn’t matter, although I did enjoy a shower when I reached my homestay host’s bathroom in Moscow.

Same goes for regular meals, sit-down dinners, television and radio access, and all of those things we usually take for granted when we’re at home. You don’t need them. They’re nice to have, but you can step beyond that comfort zone and enjoy a completely new experience when you’re traveling.

#4: Dealing With Fear

When you’re at home, you can actually control your environment quite a lot. If you think your friend drives a car too dangerously, you can usually decide not to drive with them. You know which streets you shouldn’t walk down alone at night. And you are well aware of who to call or how to react if you perceive some danger.

In a foreign environment, all of this control is gone. In some ways, that’s really exciting, and I think that’s why people often find it easier to get involved in extreme activities like bungee-jumping or diving with sharks when they’re on the road. And in some ways, it’s also very freeing.

While I was traveling, I found myself in numerous situations where I expected to feel terrified. Hurtling along an Egyptian road at midnight with no headlights on, I was just waiting for a fatal collision, and couldn’t persuade the taxi driver to either slow down or turn his lights on. I was afraid, sure, but it was something I could get past. It seemed relatively easy to think that I’d either survive or I wouldn’t, and that was that. Similarly, if I think back to a midnight rendezvous with policemen in Taipei when we’d found strange packages of powder hidden in our hotel bathroom’s false ceiling, it’s a situation where I’d usually freak out, but the freedom of travel seems to put those moments in a clearer perspective.

Dealing with the Comfort Zone Back Home

Returning home after spending a long time away, you’ll probably arrive back to reverse culture shock and feel out of it for some time. Part of the process of returning home is working out how your new thoughts and feelings — sometimes even a whole new personality — fit in to your home environment. The most positive way to deal with it is to remember all the progress you’ve made with expanding your comfort zone and try to keep up the same attitudes at home.

For example, since I returned to Australia, I noticed I make much more of an effort to chat to strangers who I meet, perhaps at the bus stop or in a line at the bank — and especially to offer help to tourists or travelers. Just last week I heard some people speaking Portuguese on my train, and guessed they were Brazilian — then chatted until their stop about their experiences in my country and what they missed about theirs.

I also make a point of heading to restaurants offering cuisines I’ve never tried, and a big change is that I often find ways to entertain myself other than watching television. Above all, I still remember that striving to go beyond your comfort zone will always bring you something good.

Fantastic advice Amanda for travel and life in general.

This is how I feel when I go out of my comfort zone… I get adjust to anything, any food, any kind of people anything…

The concept of going outside our comfort zone should really be our Mantra that we repeat in our heads every single day of our travels abroad! I’m leaving for the Greek Isles on Tuesday to film the next episode of Jet Set Life-I will take the recommendation to heart. Thanks again!

i learned from practice this summer. just wanted to let you know that the “reverse culture shock” does not open to that post. thanks

Good catch, Zainab. The link’s been fixed. Thanks!

Great article. Love that mindset. It’s one I’ll hopefully get to adopt really soon. I’m dying to travel and work my way through a few countries.

Really awesome article Amanda. Thanks for sharing. I am taking a 6 week trip to Costa Rica this year to volunteer in a remote area. I don’t like bugs and I’m going to a Costa Rica. Some days I think I am crazy – you article is helping with my butterflies – Thanks!

brilliant! and yes, i’ve eaten those wriggling things in japan. :)

Such clear and great advice. I know I have been challenged by stepping out of my comfort zone and it has definitely held me back. Plus it is so empowering when you take a step out! What an exhilarating feeling :)

I dont have any troubles speaking to strangers, at home or abroad, but I’ve never felt comfortable enough to try new foods when travelling. I suppose, you’d just stick to what you know, as our stomachs, in most cases, arent adapted to types of foods other people eat in their countries.

I was in india about a year ago and ate curries, just like i would at home, but my stomach couldnt handle it!!

But i do like the idea of having this as a daily mantra …

I agree that stepping out of your comfort zone has a lot a benefits. However the problem as with most things are what would happen if you step outside the zone but the fact that few are willing to do so. I like you will eat almost anything (well at least once).

Love this and totally agree! On my very first solo trip I adopted the philosophy “Just say yes” (inspired, funny enough, from a phrase I’d seen painted on the back of a van: “The more I say yes, the more fun I have.”). I was one of those people who used to be really shy, so shy that I would often turn down invitations to do things (even something as simple as grab a meal) because I was so afraid of being able to make conversation, embarrassing myself, who knows.

That trip was full of so many amazing experiences and people because I didn’t hesitate on invitations or ideas, I just did them. Things I never thought I would do! I gained the confidence to go out of my comfort zone and realized there were so many things I COULD do and there were so many interesting people out there I could talk to (that I, in fact, was actually an interesting person!)

Needless to say it didn’t stop there, and since then I’ve traveled a lot more, mostly solo, and I even spent a year living and working abroad in your beautiful country :)

I do agree that coming home is a little bit harder to keep up with that spontaneity and out-of-the-comfort-zone push, but it’s a conscious decision I try to regularly make and remind myself, and even when I’m not trying I’m still a much happier, more outgoing, and less nervous/shy/scared person than I was when I was younger! Saying yes and going outside your comfort zone leads to a fuller, more amazing and memorable experience of life.

Twelve South AirFly Pro Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter

Take 20% off the Twelve South AirFly Pro (in Black) on Twelve South's website with code NBCSELECT through May 27.

NBC Select editorial coordinator Rebecca Rodriguez says the AirFly, which plugs into the in-flight entertainment's audio jack and connects to earbuds via Bluetooth, has become a travel essential. “I can never use my Apple Airpods Max on airplanes because they don’t come with an auxiliary cable. My AirFly seamlessly pairs with my Airpods with the touch of a button, then recognizes them whenever I use it next. I used it on six, three- to four-hour flights before needing to recharge it, so it has great battery life.”

Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle

Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle

This collapsible water bottle frees you from lugging around a heavy metal bottle when you're trying to pack light. "This bottle collapses down super flat," says managing editor Leah Ginsberg. "And I was surprised by how easy it is to carry when filled, as well as its stability, because it looks a little awkward." It fits in a car cup holder, says Ginsberg and held up in the dishwasher. "It's especially good for a trip where you have to go through TSA or where you’ll be doing a lot of hiking," she says.

Tile Pro

This Bluetooth tracker is a good alternative to  Apple’s AirTag , especially for anyone who does not use an iPhone. Within 400 feet of the tracker, you can ping it to make noise and use the  Tile app  to help find its precise location. Outside that distance, the Tile Network can help you find your tag. After a wash, the material help up, too."

How we picked the best amazon travel accessories.

We spoke to travel experts, who have collectively explored more than 200 countries via various transportation modes, and asked them what products are most important to have on hand. When packing, our experts recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • Size and weight . Size matters since most airlines allow only one carry-on and a personal item, says travel coach Sarah Rose De Vore . Our experts recommended choosing products that offer the most value at minimal weight and size.
  • Comfort . Lack of sleep and discomfort can lead to fatigue long after you deboard, says travel wellness expert Edyta Satchell. To combat these issues, she recommends packing things that help block out light and noise or offer support so you can sleep and sit more comfortably.
  • Organization . Easy access to your belongings is essential. Our experts recommend bags and organizers with pockets.
  • Health . “You can’t be ignorant of the negative impact travel has on your health,” says Satchell. For example, limited movement on the plane can cause muscle, circulation and joint problems, not drinking enough water can result in dehydration and lack of sleep can cause fatigue, she adds. Satchell recommends packing items that keep you hydrated, such as sheet masks, serums and pre-filled reusable water bottles. She also suggests packing items for comfort, such as neck pillows and compression socks, as well as quality light-filtering eye masks to get proper rest.

How to shop for the best travel products and pack for your next trip

Satchell recommends swapping large containers for reusable TSA-approved ones if using a carry-on bag. She also suggests carrying ginger gummies in case of nausea. Here are some other important things to remember when shopping for the best travel products, according to our experts.

  • Choose your suitcase wisely. To avoid extra fees and overweight charges from overpacking, choose a bag that actually suits the length of your trip.
  • Create a packing list. If you travel often, make a general list of things you need so you don’t have to recreate it every time, says De Vore. Then you can make a few adjustments tailored to each trip.
  • Make your personal item count. Opting for a good-sized bag, like a backpack, for your personal item is a great way to carry additional essentials like spare clothes, shoes or travel-size toiletries, according to De Vore.
  • Put your valuables in your carry-on. If there is something you wouldn’t want missing or ruined, De Vore says to put it in your carry-on bag. Our experts also recommend taking photos of your suitcase and belongings before checking them into the airline.
  • Make a photocopy of your passport or ID and keep it in your suitcase. If your wallet or purse goes missing, you’ll need to show proof of identity. Be sure to have copies someplace other than where your original documents are stored.

Baltic officials say they could send troops to Ukraine without waiting for NATO if Russia scores a breakthrough: report

Baltic officials told German representatives they might send troops to Ukraine, Der Spiegel reported.

The report says their condition for moving in troops is if Russia achieves a breakthrough in the war.

The warning was part of an argument for Germany to up its support in Ukraine, the outlet reported.

Members of parliament for the Baltic states warned German officials last week that their governments were poised to send troops to Ukraine if Russia achieved considerable gains, Der Spiegel reported.

The German outlet reported Sunday that the Baltic officials issued the warning while speaking with representatives for Berlin at the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, Estonia.

Der Spiegel neither named any of the officials nor identified which countries they represented but said they raised concerns about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's current policy toward the war.

Scholz has been denying Ukraine permission to use German-supplied weapons in strikes on Russian soil, in line with Washington's stance of not allowing Kyiv to use donated weaponry for attacks beyond Ukraine's own borders.

Der Spiegel reported that the Baltic officials were concerned that such policies created a half-hearted attempt to help Kyiv and might allow Russia to gain the upper hand in Ukraine.

They said that if Moscow did gain significant ground in eastern Ukraine , their governments and Poland could move troops into the conflict zone even before Russia deployed its soldiers on their borders, the outlet reported.

The officials' argument, Der Spiegel reported, was that treating Moscow with restraint could backfire and instead create an escalation.

Like Ukraine, the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — were previously part of the Soviet Union.

They've been some of NATO's most vocal members in pushing the rest of the alliance to intensify support for Kyiv, fearing that Russian President Vladimir Putin may seek to continue his conquest in the region if he seizes Ukraine.

Together with French President Emmanuel Macron, they've repeatedly hinted that they aren't ruling out sending NATO troops to Ukraine.

Officials in Estonia recently signaled the possibility of deploying its troops to fill non-combat roles and free up Ukrainians to fight on the front lines. There are concerns that such actions could escalate the conflict quickly into a direct war between NATO and Russia.

A spokesperson for Estonia's defense ministry told Business Insider the country wasn't discussing deploying troops to Ukraine for active combat roles.

"Tomorrow, the EU defense ministers will discuss the expansion of the EU training mission EUMAM, which until now has trained Ukrainian combatants on EU territory," the spokesperson said, referring to the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine. "The discussion will mostly focus on the quantity of personnel to be trained. However, it may also touch on the location of the training."

When contacted by BI, a spokesperson for Poland's ministry of national defense said: "We are not considering the idea of sending Polish soldiers to Ukraine, so it is difficult for us to comment on such media reports."

Press services for the defense ministries of Latvia and Lithuania didn't immediately respond to requests for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular business hours.

Why Russia's western neighbors are getting skittish

The concerns reported by Der Spiegel have come after Russia launched a renewed assault in northeastern Ukraine, striking the city of Kharkiv and capturing several settlements in the surrounding region.

Military observers say the Kremlin can't take Kharkiv with the resources it's deployed there so far, but Russia has been shelling the city and inflicting civilian casualties .

On the main front in the east, Ukraine has been struggling for months to hold back a grinding Russian advance after its supplies from the US began to dwindle.

The aid has resumed after months of stalling in Congress, but Kyiv says Western equipment often arrives too late to turn the tide of the war because conditions keep changing.

Russia meanwhile stoked alarm among its neighbors last week with a draft proposal from its defense ministry to change its maritime borders with Finland and Lithuania in January 2025.

The draft was uploaded to Russia's registry of laws on Tuesday but was later removed.

On Thursday, Tallinn officials said Moscow had removed 24 of 50 buoys marking Russia's borders with Estonia on the Narva River. The officials said Russia had been contesting the buoys' locations.

On Sunday, six NATO nations — Norway, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — said they'd construct a unified " drone wall " with unmanned aerial vehicles and more advanced technologies to strengthen their borders.

Their concerns aren't just centered on a full-scale Russian invasion. Finland, for example, said Russia had been trying to overwhelm Finnish border officials with waves of migrants trying to enter its borders.

Norway, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia share land borders with mainland Russia, and Poland and Lithuania share land borders with Belarus, a close ally of the Kremlin.

Correction: May 27, 2024 — A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Poland was once part of the Soviet Union. This story has also been updated to reflect comments from the Polish and Estonian defense ministries.

How to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone in Travel Nursing

Here are some ways to stretch your comfort boundaries and challenge yourself as a travel nurse.|here are some ways to stretch your comfort boundaries and challenge yourself as a travel nurse.|here are some ways to stretch your comfort boundaries and challenge yourself as a travel nurse.|here are some ways to stretch your comfort boundaries and challenge yourself as a travel nurse..

  • Set a SMART goal for yourself. Lay out the steps you need to take to reach it and track your progress as you work toward your dream. Do you want to float and learn how to work in multiple departments? Are you dreaming of the California sun from your Michigan window or want to travel to multiple cities in the next year? Decide on your goals, map them out, and see them get checked off your list.
  • Identify your complacency traps and patterns. Is it binge watching TV? Eating the same foods every night? Hours and hours of social media? Break up your routine with something new. Each new travel assignment can be an opportunity to break out of a rut.
  • Identify the excuses you make to stay comfortable. Notice when they get in the way of what you really want. Once you find this self-awareness, come up with a solution to overcome these excuses. Or make like Nike and just do it. It might be time to move somewhere totally different and give it a try for 13 weeks at a time.
  • Start spending time with people who are where you want to be or are doing what you want to be doing. You are a composite of the 5 people you spend the most time with, and if you spend your time with timid naysayers who are always complaining, it’s time to broaden your social circle. Find your tribe and some new nurse friends online .
  • Look for a role model to emulate or a nurse mentor to guide you to your goals. Find out what they did to get to where they are — if they can do it, you can do it!
  • Get out and try something new. That’s what Groupon , LivingSocial , and Goldstar are for. You came all the way out here on assignment, there is no reason to stay home all the time.
  • Try out a new physical hobby: dancing, singing, learning an instrument, aerobics class, rock climbing, trapeze, martial arts, yoga — something that challenges your brain and your body simultaneously. What does your latest town offer that you can’t get back home? Do that!
  • Take a class: cooking, painting, pottery, woodworking, or something else that gets you creating with your hands. Or try a communication booster such as improv, toastmasters, or a foreign language. The verbal activities will help you at work, and the hands-on classes will help you forget about work and do something totally unrelated to taking care of others.
  • Find a volunteer opportunity or a way to get involved and give back to something you believe in. You will gain a deeper understanding of your new community and meet people with similar interests and values.
  • Keep in mind that this is all a head game. The fear and fight or flight response that you are feeling is your mind telling you to stay small and maintain the status quo of your life. You’re a travel nurse, so the status quo is not going to cut it. As the saying goes, you have nothing to fear but fear itself.

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Sunday that Russia is preparing to intensify its offensive along Ukraine’s northern border , as the death toll rose to 14 in an aerial bomb attack on a large construction supplies store in the city of Kharkiv.

The bombing of Kharkiv on Saturday afternoon also left 43 injured and 16 missing, Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Sinegubov said initially after the attack.

In a video statement from Kharkiv, Zelensky said that Russia is preparing offensive actions 55 miles northwest of Ukraine’s second-largest city. He said that Russians “gather another group of troops near our border.”

Ukraine says it regains control in some areas of Kharkiv region, as Russian attacks continue

President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine’s forces have secured ‘combat control’ of areas where Russian troops entered Ukraine’s Kharkiv region this month.

May 25, 2024

He did not specify where the troops are being assembled, but Ukrainian officials have expressed strong concern about the Sumy region. Both Kharkiv city and Sumy, with about 250,000 people, are within about 15 miles of the Russian border.

Moscow’s troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the Kharkiv area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city. Ukrainian authorities have evacuated more than 11,000 people from the region since the start of the offensive May 10.

Russian forces are carrying out offensive attacks across the 620-mile front line, with pitched battles in the Chasiv Yar direction of the Donetsk region, where “the intensity of the hostilities is quite high” according to a statement from Ukraine’s General Staff. “The defense forces are taking measures to prevent the advance of the enemy,” the statement said.

Ukrainians contemplate the once unthinkable: Losing the war with Russia

Could Ukraine lose the war? Once nearly taboo, the question hovers in Kyiv, but Ukrainians believe they must fight for their lives against Putin’s troops.

Russia launched wide missile and drone attacks on much of Ukraine during the night. Ukrainian officials said air defense units intercepted 31 Shahed drones and 12 cruise missiles launched by Russia in the Mykolaiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia and Chernihiv regions.

In total Russia launched 14 missiles and more than three dozen drones, according to a statement from Ukraine’s air force. It was not clear what damage may have been caused by missiles and drones that were not shot down.

The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, which lies across the border from Ukraine, said four people were injured in Ukrainian attacks during the night. The Russian Defense Ministry said seven drones were shot down over the Kursk region and three over Oryol, both of which are to the north of Belgorod.
