Visiting Bermuda soon? Check out 11 things you should know before traveling to the island + some useful Bermuda travel tips.

Bermuda is a beautiful island that is full of hidden surprises. However, there are quite a few misconceptions about the island, and unlike more popular travel destinations, there are things that not many people know about it. But there are definitely things you should know before visiting Bermuda!

So if you’re thinking of visiting Bermuda, or you’ve been thinking where to go on your next vacation, read through these helpful Bermuda travel tips + where to stay in Bermuda tips.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING BERMUDA

1| bermuda is not in the caribbean.

cruise to bermuda safe

This is one of the most popular misconceptions about Bermuda. Although it resembles a Caribbean island in many ways, Bermuda is actually in the North Atlantic. While this doesn’t actually make much difference to enjoying the island, it does make a difference on how you get there. If you are from the East Coast, Bermuda might be closer than you think!

2| It’s very close to the East Coast of the US

On that note, Bermuda is located very close to the East Coast of America, and this is where you’ll likely fly from to get to Bermuda. Flights to US cities such as New York and Boston take just over two hours, although you can make connections to almost any East Coast city.

On the other hand, if you don’t feel like flying, a more enjoyable way to reach the island is by combining Bermuda and New England on a cruise. Discover Celebrity’s Bermuda Cruise and imagine being able to visit the idyllic island of Bermuda for a few days followed by dreamy towns in Maine, the young city of Boston, and finish your trip in New York City.

3| Bermuda boasts some beautiful beaches

cruise to bermuda safe

One of the main reasons Bermuda gets mistaken for a Caribbean island is the quality of the beaches. You can expect crystal clear water, beautiful sand, and plenty of sunbathers, similar to those you would find in Turks and Caicos or other Caribbean islands. Keep in mind though that the island is in the Atlantic: during the summer the water is warm, but can dip to much cooler temperatures in the winter.

Some of the most beautiful beaches are Jobson’s Cove, Tobacco Bay beaches, and, of course, the pink beaches… keep reading!! West Whale Beach is also great, however because of the low tide this is accessible only a few hours a day.  Humpback whales pass here in April, but most of the time they will be too far to actually see them!

4| You can’t rent a car on the island

Car rental is banned by the Bermudian government. The main reason for this is because the island is quite small (21 square miles) and has a small population of 65,000. However, the island expects around 600,000 tourists a year, and if they all rented cars the infrastructure wouldn’t be able to cope.

So what are your options? You can rent scooters and mopeds, as these are freely available and cheap to rent, or there is an emerging market of electric minicars too. Alternatively, there are places for renting bicycles if you prefer (and you can get some exercising done at the same time), or there are plenty of taxis available across the island.

5| You can swim in grottos

There are many grottos and cave systems on the coast of Bermuda, and all of them are beautiful. And to make things even better, you’re allowed to swim in them! There are plenty of companies that arrange swimming tours of the bigger cave systems, and this is usually the best way to experience them as you can take advantage of local knowledge.

Prospero’s & Cathedral Caves are located on the grounds of Grotto Bay Beach Resort, and are definitely worth a visit.

6| You should get travel insurance before flying out

Everyone traveling to Bermuda should think twice before flying out to the island without travel medical insurance. Medical cost in Bermuda appears to be the second highest in the world, often even higher than in the US! Most, if not all, American and British medical insurance companies won’t cover you if something happens to you while on the island, so you really need to think ahead before traveling.

7| The historic Town of St. George is super instagrammable

cruise to bermuda safe

The Town of St. George was the first settlement established on the island and is steeped in local history. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for this very reason. There are so many beautiful buildings to see, many of which are very colorful and make for those perfect Instagram shots.

Make sure you visit King’s Square, which is in the center of town and a good place to start any tours. There are companies that provide walking and minibus tours, although it’s perfectly possible to guide yourself around the town if you prefer.

8 | It’s quite expensive

This is an important thing to consider when thinking about visiting Bermuda. Many people who have emigrated to the island don’t bother cooking at home because it’s just as expensive as eating out. The main reason for this is because the island is so small the vast majority of things are imported from other countries, which adds to the price massively.

9| Yes, it’s true. There are pink sand beaches!!

cruise to bermuda safe

Do I have to say it again? PINK BEACHES! Bermuda is famous for its pink sand beaches , and they make ideal photo opportunities, particularly at sunset. The sand is made from tiny invertebrates that live on the coral reefs along Bermuda’s coastline.

I’m sure you’ve seen photos of Horseshoe Bay Beach before. Ranked by Conde Nast one of the top 20 beaches in the world, there is no way you can miss this unreal pink beach when visiting Bermuda!

10| Watch out for jellyfish

Bermuda is a known home of the Portuguese man o’war, a poisonous kind of jellyfish. Now, I don’t want to scare you. This jellyfish only appears occasionally, usually after storms, and shouldn’t deter you from visiting the island.

The beaches will have warning signs up if the jellyfish are seen there regularly, but it pays to keep an eye out anyway. Ask locals or your hotel if there have been any recent sightings at the beach before you go swimming on some lesser known beaches.

11| Bermudians speak English!

Hey, it will be easy to communicate with the locals! Bermuda’s national language is Bermudian English, which is a mix of American, British, and West Indian English. Some locals also speak Portuguese, but you won’t have any language problems.

WHERE TO STAY IN BERMUDA: BEST HOTELS IN BERMUDA

As I was telling you earlier, Bermuda is not a cheap destination. I usually recommend luxury, middle-range, and budget options, but in this case I had to add a super luxury category as middle range is already expensive.

Have you heard of The Reefs? Is that considered a nice hotel? Under what category would you put it under?

Tuesday 24th of August 2021

Hi Mira! I don't personally know it, but the reviews are really good and it's been featured by Conde Nast. I would consider it a mid-range / boutique hotel. The prices are high for a boutique hotel, but this is Bermuda!

You can drink the tap water. I am a naive of Bermuda and it is safe to drink. Please verify your information before passing it on to others. Secondly it is cheaper to cook at home you just have to know how. It is a regular process for natives and eating out is a treat.

Wednesday 20th of July 2022

@Steph, I'm another native from Bermuda, In Bermuda we have no natural water source because we are an isolated small island and most of the underground water supply is brackish because the island is mainly on a limestone foundation which is a very permeable rock, so instead we collect our water from the sky (rain-water). This is why are roofs are white and slanted in all directions to catch the water and store it in tanks underneath our homes. Most of the population drinks tap water from their tanks as it comes straight from the sky and any water that is being drank and isn't from one of our Bermuda rain water catchment systems, is imported. We use the brackish ground water for our toilets and similar things.... my entire life living hear I have never heard of anyone getting sick we've been doing it for 400 years now!

Tuesday 21st of June 2022

@TB, YES indeed very glad you set the record straight I have family in Bermuda I'm looking forward to attending Cup match this year it's been a long time since I've been on the island I'm so excited

Monday 21st of June 2021

Thanks for your comment! When this article was first written in 2018, the CDC had issued a warning against drinking tap water. When that happens, it would be irresponsible of me to to tell people the water is safe to drink, because then somebody could get sick and it would be my fault. However, I have just checked and now the CDC only has a warning for "travelers visiting rural or remote areas that are served by unregulated water sources such as private wells", so I will edit the article-

You can drink the water in Bermuda, it in fact is clean. The people are called Bermudians not Bermudans. Also Whale Bay is only a beach during low tide so it’s a few hours a day that it is accessible, and you really can’t see whales from the beach as they are farther out.

Monday 7th of September 2020

Hi Jenn! Regarding the water while I agree that it is going to be safe to drink most of the times, the CDC in the US has warned not to, and I wouldn't be doing a good job if I recommended it and someone got sick: http://www.royalgazette.com/environment/article/20180315/us-issues-tap-water-warning For the name, from wat I've read both etimologies are correct: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Bermudan but I've just changed it. Thank you for letting me know about the Whale Bay, I inserted this info in the post just now!

Cruising to Bermuda: 10 Reasons You Should

Are you thinking about a vacation in Bermuda? How about cruising to Bermuda? How are cruises to Bermuda? There is more than one way to get to Bermuda, and taking a cruise is one of them. Here at 10 reasons why you should cruise to Bermuda.

Shockingly, Bermuda was never on our list of places to visit.

You know, the Bermuda Triangle and all that.

Then we started cruising more and heard about this fantastic island from other cruisers. Since it’s such a popular cruise destination, there had to be something special about the island.

And we were right!

We recently sailed on the Norwegian Joy from NYC to Bermuda and fell in love with everything the island offers.

Bermuda is a breathtaking vacation destination. The island is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is known for its stunning pink-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, which contrast sharply with the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and colonial architecture.

On top of that, the food is outstanding. Everywhere you turn while exploring the island, you’ll find it clean and safe. Let’s not forget about the locals, some of the friendliest people we’ve ever met.

There are many things to do in Bermuda, both on land and water.

You can book a flight to Bermuda — it’s a short one from most major cities on the United States East Coast. Then book a hotel or a vacation rental . Spend more than a few days there if you choose to. We’d love to do that in the future, too.

However, cruising to Bermuda is the perfect choice for the reasons we will list below. A cruise to Bermuda is one of the best ways to travel to this island destination. Here are our top reasons why cruising to Bermuda should be on your list.

If you are wondering if preparing for a cruise is difficult, don’t worry. We have you covered there as well. You can check out how to prepare for a cruise next.

Cruising to Bermuda

1. great value for your money.

norwegian joy docked at bermuda cruise port

It’s not a secret that Bermuda is expensive. Everything from food, lodging, and activities can be pricey. However, cruising to Bermuda can save you a lot of money.

When you book a cruise, your cabin, meals, and entertainment on the cruise ship are included in your cruise fare . Which helps offset what you’re

Plus, the cruise lines often offer special promotions and deals that make cruising to Bermuda even more affordable.

That’s not to say you won’t spend money when you’re off the ship in Bermuda. You probably will on transportation, food, and a tour. We always encourage cruisers to support the local economy at ports.

When you compare the cost of a land vacation in Bermuda to a cruise to Bermuda, you realize cruising to Bermuda is a greater value. Especially if you are traveling as a family, the cost of a resort or vacation rental alone may add up to more than the cost of a cruise.

2. It’s Two Vacations in One

colorful structure, palm tree and cobblestone street in st. george bermuda

We are firm believers that the cruise ship is a destination in itself. When you cruise, you’re cruising for the cruise ship and ports. So on a Bermuda cruise, you are enjoying two types of vacation a cruise ship and then Bermuda.

While on the cruise ship, you can enjoy everything it offers, from delicious dining options, Broadway-style shows, live music, movies by the pool, casinos, clubs, bars, and so much more. Read more on the things to do on a cruise .

And then, when you’re in Bermuda, you can explore this beautiful island country. With its pink sand beaches and turquoise waters, you’ll want to spend a reasonable amount of time on the beach.

3. Perfect Amount of Time

What’s unique about cruises to Bermuda is that the itineraries include overnight stays for up to 2-3 days, which is the perfect time to fall in love with the island.

You’ll have a full days in Bermuda to explore!

And you can go back to the cruise ship when you need a break from being on land. You can always take advantage of all your cruise ship offers and relax on board.

4. Bermuda is a Great Family Destination

Bermuda is a great cruising destination for families. Families can enjoy the cruise ship, including kid’s clubs, and then off the ship in Bermuda.

The island has excellent things to do for everyone in the family. You can find beaches where the waters are calm for kids to enjoy and for parents not to freak out. You can also do plenty of tours and activities together as a family.

Cruise Essentials to Pack

Before you set sail, pack these essentials that will help make your cruise even more enjoyable. These items include everything from sun protection essentials to must-have medications. We also cover what not to pack for a cruise on our site.

5. Transportation Made Easy

Tazzaro Electric Vehicle from Bermuda Car Rental

Transportation is made easy for cruisers. Step out of the cruise terminal in the Royal Naval Dockyard and the various transportation options available to cruisers, from taxis, shuttles, ferries, etc.

Since Bermuda doesn’t rent out cars (only two-passenger electric vehicles) to visitors, many cruisers opt to use taxis or shuttles in port. And the shuttles to the beaches are easy and affordable.

If you’re doing a land vacation in Bermuda, unless you’re staying in Hamilton or St. George, you must arrange taxis, a driver, or rent an electric vehicle to get around town. If you’re a family of 3 or more, you will need a taxi or a driver because electric vehicles only fit 2 people at a time.

Then there is always the bus. Bermuda has great public transportation.

6. You Don’t Have to Worry About Dining Options

As a foodie, it’s pretty stressful researching and figuring out what to eat every day, three times a day, when on a land vacation. Yeah, sometimes we wing it and discover delicious places to eat. Other times, they are major disappointments.

One of the reasons we loved cruising to Bermuda was that we only had to figure out lunch. On the cruise ship, you have the main dining room, buffet, room service, and specialty restaurants on board.

Some cruisers ventured out to nearby restaurants by the cruise port at night, but we stayed on the cruise ship.

We were so tired from the sun and all the exploring we did all day that we were happy to relax on the ship at night. Then we’d start early the next day, taking advantage of everything Bermuda offers.

7. Perfect Way to Unwind On Your Way to Bermuda

relaxing on a cruise ship

A cruise is a perfect way to unwind and relax. We all know how stressful life can be. And a cruise is a great escape from reality. The 1-2 sea days on the cruise ship before arriving in Bermuda are the perfect way to start your vacation.

Sometimes, the stress from just getting ready for vacation gets to us in those first couple days. We slow down as we try to catch our breath. Then we are fully ahead in vacation mode after it passes.

It’s nice having those sea days on the cruise, enjoying the ship, and relaxing before arriving in Bermuda.

8. Bermuda is a Safe-Cruise Port

Is it safe to cruise to Bermuda?

Bermuda is one of the safest cruise ports . It’s one of the safest cruise destinations we have been to.

That’s not to say that other cruise ports aren’t safe, and you should stay away. It just means that in Bermuda, we didn’t feel the need to be hyper-vigilant about everything. Our spidey senses never went up.

Of course, you should always take precautions when traveling to any destination, but we felt comfortable in Bermuda, and you will, too.

Bermuda Cruise Tips You Need to Know

Are you going on a Bermuda cruise? Here are Bermuda cruise tips to help you prepare for your trip and make the most of your time!

9. The Views from a Cruise Ship

view of the national museum of bermuda from cruise

One of the best reasons to cruise is the views from the cruise ship. That’s no different when cruising to Bermuda. Being on the ship, the scenery and perspective you get from Bermuda’s port are beautiful.

As your cruise ship enters the Port of Bermuda, you’ll be in awe of the turquoise waters and coral reefs surrounding the island.

At sunrise and sunset, it is also pretty special. But if you can be by the water at the restaurant or the beach at sunset in Bermuda, we highly recommend that.

10. It’s an Easy Trip from East Coast Cities

sailing from new york city

What ports have cruises to Bermuda?

Bermuda departure ports are mostly from these US Destinations: New York City, Boston, Baltimore, Cape Liberty, Norfolk, and Florida.

We were born and raised in New York and had no idea when we lived there that cruising to Bermuda was so popular. It’s an easy and affordable vacation for locals living near and around New York City, Boston, and New Jersey.

With the cost of flights and everything up, it’s a no-brainer for East Coasters to book a cruise to Bermuda.

Our close friend in NY recently searched high and low for vacation options for her family of four. It turned out that booking a cruise on Norwegian Joy, which we recently cruised on, was a 1/3 of the cost of most quotes she received. She compared all-inclusive resorts and other cruises and flights leaving from other states.

Now, she and her family simply have to take an Uber from her home to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. And they will have the best cruise to Bermuda.

When flights are at their highest, it’s worth looking at what cruises are leaving near your home port. It is worth it for East Coasters within driving distance from these ports that go to Bermuda.

You really do make cruises sound pretty awesome. It does sound pretty ideal for a relaxing vacay. I like the idea of exploring an area but then also getting back to the ship to wherever your favorite relaxing spot is. And all the food options. Definitely makes deciding where to eat easier. And Bermuda looks beautiful! I need to go one day!

Cruises are not for everyone, but some people don’t understand them or know until they experience one. Of course, sometimes people also pick the wrong cruise ship, cruise line, and itinerary, too, and ruin their first-time experience. I do think it’s one of those travel vacations that should be experienced at least once.

Of course from New York, it’s only a 2-hour flight to Bermuda. You can go that route as well and have a fantastic time.

...first visit this early May...we have a modest plan to use busses-ferries and taxis to get around the 22 sq mile island... are there safe bicycle trails that go North-South, East-West? It seems most roads could be risky for a peddler..... thanks, p

Nevertheless....it would greatly benefit any any Bermuda visitor to at least familiarize themselves with her public transportation system--buses & ferries, as well as other alternative modes of personal transport--licensed, metered taxis, two(2) passenger (ONLY) rental Personal Electric Vehicles (PEV's) and renmtal motor scooters.

The '..peak..' time is when a cruise ship first arrives in port and thousands of passengers pour ashore. Then there may be delays and waits....especially for taxis and Horseshoe Bay Beach shuttles and the occasional FULL bus departing the Dockyard complex. Once this initial exodus passes...things begin to return to normal.

It's worth noting that though their popularity has grown since they were first introduced in Bermuda back in 2017...the entire PEV rental inventory from all liveries, isn't nearly as large as you might think (less than 300 islamd-wide ??) So, if you choose this mode of personal transport during your visit....it would be a good idea to make an advance reservation.

Though Bermuda has an extensive system of inter-coinnected 'sections' Railway Trails-- https://www.bermudarailway.net/ --for walking, hiking, biking that run predominentlt west-east, the system is not continuous/seamless. The system is made up of various '..sections..' with brief '..gaps..'. As the system was originally designed and built follow a route that was mainly level (as were Bermuda's main public roadways) both the mainly pedestrian-only Railway Trail 'sections' and public bus routes are relatively close together for convenient access.

Conventional pedal bicycles are available for rental from several liveries (and also some rental E-bikes)....but frankly, given Bermuda's narrow, often serpentine and occasionally heavily trafficked public roads, riding bicycles along public roadways hasn't been a good idea since Eisenhower was first elected. From most bicycle rental livery locations, you must ride anywhere from a 1/2 mile to a couple of miles to access points to the various 'sections of the BRT access points. But once you do get onto the BRT the rides are pleasant and quite lovely. As an example: the section of the BRT between Bailey's Bay--heading west--toward the Village of Flatts is absolutely lovely, running along Bermuda's north shore, with wonderful ocean views all along the approx. 3½--4 miles of this section, in part '..over..' parts of the waters...and several spots to stop and picnic, enjoy the view, perhaps take a swim.

You can 'follow' the various 'sections' of the BRT with this widely available, FREE,cleverly designed, folding/pocket-size map--

Does It Make Sense to Take a Short Cruise to Bermuda?

Gene Sloan

Looking for an inexpensive way to do a quick trip to Bermuda ? If you live along the East Coast, one of the least pricey options is to take a short cruise there with one of a handful of major lines sailing out of such cities as New York and Baltimore.

Four-night sailings to Bermuda from the New York area sometimes are available for as little as $400 per person, for a package that includes your room, transportation and meals.

As those who regularly fly to Bermuda from the East Coast know, that's not much more than the typical cost of roundtrip flights to and from the destination alone, and all those flights do is get you there. If you go by air, you're still facing the cost of a hotel and meals in what has long-been considered one of the most expensive places in the world . You easily could end up paying two or three times more on flights to, and accommodations in, Bermuda than you would on a cruise from the East Coast.

Sounds like a cruise is the way to go, then, right? For some people, yes. But having done short cruises to Bermuda multiple times over the years, including just this past month on Carnival Cruise Line's just-christened Carnival Sunrise, I can honestly say traveling to the fish-hook-shaped island by ship is a very different experience than going by air.

And it's not for everyone.

Before you reach for one of the best credit cards for booking cruises to reserve that short voyage to Bermuda, here are some key things to know about the trips:

Photo by Gene Sloan/ The Points Guy.

Your Travel Dates are Limited

While you can fly to Bermuda for a hotel stay on any day of the year, cruise ships typically only sail there between April and November, and they don't go every day during those months. There often are just one or two short cruises to Bermuda from all East Coast ports combined in any given week.

There also only are a few lines that offer the trips. For this coming summer and fall, your choices are limited to Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line.

Royal Caribbean is by far the biggest seller of short cruises to Bermuda, with regular five-night sailings this year from the New York-area on the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas and from Baltimore on the 1,992-passenger Grandeur of the Seas. This year, the line also is offering a single five-night sailing from Boston (departing Sept. 10) on the 2,146-passenger Serenade of the Seas.

Carnival's short cruises to Bermuda this year, all on Sunrise, are four nights in length and mostly take place out of New York, with a single four-night sailing out of Charleston, South Carolina.

Norwegian and Disney each have three short cruises to Bermuda (varying from four to five nights) on the schedule between now and the end of the 2019 season, all out of New York.

For those already looking ahead to 2020, the big news is that Norwegian is planning far more short Bermuda cruises. On the flipside, Disney is planning to skip the destination entirely next year.

You Could Experience Rough Seas

Personally, I love a little pitch and roll when I'm on a cruise ship. It's part of the charm of sea travel. But if you're the kind of person who is going to be laid low by even a small sway, a Bermuda cruise may not be for you.

Unlike St. Thomas, St. Martin and most of the other sunny isles that cruise ships visit from Eastern ports, Bermuda isn't in the relatively calm Caribbean. It's way out in the North Atlantic, and that's a body of water that isn't always tranquil.

On the way to Bermuda a few weeks ago, we got sideswiped by one of those big North Atlantic storms that conjured winds of 55 knots and waves as high as 12 feet. Those are the sort of numbers that will cause even the biggest, most stable ships to move around a bit. While I was basically fine, there were plenty of passengers looking a little green.

The heavy winds (and periodic rain) also prompted the ship's captain to order the closing and draining of its deck-top pools, where the water was sloshing around, and the closing of deck-top waterslides and other deck-top play zones, all of which are normally top draws on a sea day.

Not every ship on a Bermuda cruise experiences such a storm, for sure. And even when they do, it's generally a transitory thing. Sailing back from Bermuda just a couple days later, we experienced much calmer seas and mostly sunny skies, providing for a lovely sea day. But a day or two of iffy weather on your Bermuda sailing is definitely a possibility.

You Won't Have Much Time in Bermuda

Perhaps nowhere is the phrase "the journey is the destination" more apt than on a short Bermuda cruise. While the marketing material you see touting the trips is heavy with images of passengers strolling Bermuda's famously pink sand beaches and snorkeling its turquoise waters, the reality is that you'll spend most of a short Bermuda voyage aboard your ship as it sails to and from the destination. The amount of time you'll actually have in Bermuda is sometimes absurdly short.

On a typical four-night sailing like the one I just took on Sunrise, passengers get just a single day at the destination. And by day, we're not talking 24 hours. Officially, our call at Bermuda was scheduled as an eight-hour stop, with the ship arriving at 8am and departing at 4pm. But given that it took a few minutes for the vessel to clear customs upon arrival (22 minutes, to be exact) and the all-aboard time was 30 minutes before departure, the true length of the call was closer to just 7 hours.

Read that above paragraph one more time: On a four-night cruise to Bermuda, a trip lasting nearly 90 hours, you're going to spend closer to 7 of those hours actually at the destination.

That's just enough time to pick out one major activity, and even then, you're going to be racing around. For my recent one-day call, I tried to make the most of it by signing up for a whirlwind adventure tour that included a (very short) jungle hike, a headlamp-aided descent into a cave, a visit to another cave for swimming, a cliff dive and a stop at a beach for snorkeling. As exotic as that sounds, it was nothing if not rushed, with each stop basically lasting just long enough to get the Insta photo, and we still barely made it back to the ship before departure.

Note that five-night voyages to Bermuda offer significantly more time at the destination than four-night trips. A typical five-night itinerary has the vessel spending the better part of two days in Bermuda. Many arrive around 9am on the first day of the visit and depart around 5pm on the second day, for a stay of about 32 hours.

You Need to Carefully Choose the Ship

Because you're going to spend a good chunk of your short Bermuda cruise not in Bermuda at all, but on your ship, it's important to choose the right vessel for you.

One way to look at short Bermuda cruises is that they really are resort vacations, not Bermuda vacations, with the resort being your cruise ship. Put another way, the vessel isn't your transportation to your destination. It is your destination. The stop in Bermuda is almost tangential to the experience. (This isn't a bad thing, mind you — at least for that segment of vacationers who are hooked on cruising for cruising's sake.)

So, you want to look closely at the various ships offering the trips and weigh how they match up to your personality. Are you a huge Disney fan? That makes it easy. The three short Disney sailings to Bermuda later this year are the way to go (if you can afford them; more on that later). Meet-and-greets with Disney characters, Disney-themed shows and the most extensive kiddie fun zones at sea are just a few of the family-friendly allures of a Disney cruise .

For families who aren't so hung up on Disney, a top choice is Anthem of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean ship sailing out of the New York area (its home port is just outside the city in Bayonne, New Jersey). It's chock-full of family-friendly attractions that play particularly well with teens such as a deck-top skydiving simulator and a bumper cars pavilion.

The Carnival ship that I recently took to Bermuda, Sunrise, is typical for the "Fun Ship" line, which is all about fun in a loud, lively and sometimes low-brow way, all for a very low cost. Expect lots of live music, bustling bars, flashy shows and such deck-top silliness as a Hairy Chest Contest plus the most raucous karaoke sessions you'll ever see. For travelers on a tight budget who like a good party, Carnival is hard to beat. Just don't expect a lot of quiet nooks where you can read a book.

For the record: All of the vessels on short Bermuda runs are relatively large, amenity-packed ships with multiple pools and other deck-top attractions such as waterslides, basketball courts and miniature golf courses; multiple restaurants and bars; and various showrooms and lounges offering everything from Broadway-style productions to comedy and magic shows (all included in the fare).

Your Bottom Line

As of this writing, fares for the least expensive, four-night Bermuda cruise available (a Sept. 12 departure from New York on Carnival Sunrise) were starting at $416 per person for a windowless "interior" cabin. That works out to just $104 per day for a package that includes your room, transportation and meals.

You'll pay more, of course, if you want a cabin with a window or, better yet, a balcony. Fares for cabins with windows start at $486 per person for the same September sailing, and balcony cabins on that voyage begin at $571 per person. You'll also pay more if you want a sailing during the busier parts of the summer. Fares for Carnival's Aug. 15 departure to Bermuda start at $639 per person.

In general, short Bermuda cruises on Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships cost a bit more than those on Carnival vessels, assuming similar sailing dates, and Disney's trips to Bermuda can be far pricier. We found fares for Royal Caribbean's least expensive five-night voyage to Bermuda from New York in September starting at $687 per person, while a four-night Norwegian sailing on the same routing in September was pricing from $579 per person. Fares for a five-night Disney trip from New York to Bermuda in September started at a sky-high $1,194 per person.

Note that none of the above rates include taxes, port charges and fees, which can run around $200 per person on sailings from New York. You'll also need to budget for extra charges you ring up on board. While meals are included at many of the on-board eateries on the ships operated by all the above lines, you'll pay extra for "specialty" restaurants such as the signature Fahrenheit 555 steakhouses found on Carnival vessels. Just like at most land resorts, you'll also pay extra for drinks. Beers at the bars on Carnival ships run $5.95 to $6.50, while wine starts at $7.75 per glass.

You'll also need to budget for the automatic service gratuities that all the above lines add to passenger bills, which currently run around $14 to $15 per person, per day.

So, if you're looking for a quick, inexpensive resort getaway from East Coast cities such as New York and Baltimore, short Bermuda cruises are an alluring option. Starting around $400 per person, a short Bermuda cruise probably is going to cost you less on a per-day basis than heading to a nearby beach town. Just don't expect much of an in-depth Bermuda experience. Traveling to the island destination is really just the excuse for the ships on these runs to get out into some (hopefully) warm and sunny waters where you can experience the amenity-packed vessels.

That said, you'll at least get a taste of Bermuda on these trips. On that front, the five-night voyages to the destination clearly offer a much bigger nibble than the four-nighters. But if you really want some time to dig into Bermuda, you should look at the longer sailings to the destination that some lines offer — or go by air and stay on land.

Note that short Bermuda cruises make the most sense for those living in or near the East Coast ports from which they depart. If you have to fly to one of these cruise gateways to take the trip, it sort of defeats the purpose of the easy-and-inexpensive getaway the sailings are supposed to be.

Bermuda Travel Safety Protocols: Before, During & After Your Visit

bermuda travel safety

“Bermuda has taken safety seriously since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has emerged as an extremely safe place for travelers to visit in 2020,” said Glenn Jones, interim CEO for Bermuda Tourism Authority. The latest Bermuda travel advisory states Bermuda is open for travelers and tourists, but they need to practice the required safety measures.

What kind of considerations should travelers think about when finding out if Bermuda safe to travel to?

Travel Considerations

  • When Do You Need to Take a COVID-19 Test?

Is There an Isolation Period When Traveling to Bermuda?

Staying safe while in bermuda, open hotels and accommodation.

N.B. Due to the changing circumstances being experienced around the world, the information in this piece is subject to change.

“We continue to enhance and elevate our protocols to protect our local community and put our guests’ minds at ease, so they can fully enjoy and experience our island,” continued Jones.

Currently, the US State Department classifies Bermuda as a location in which you should ‘reconsider travel’. However, that doesn't mean the country is closed. In fact, the coronavirus infection rate is incredibly low.

“The stringent measures we have in place allow us to continue to welcome guests to our shores,” said Edward Burt, Premier of Bermuda in remarks on October 20th. “Not only has airline capacity continued to increase with more tourists beginning to arrive, so far just over 350 people have been approved to ‘ Work in Bermuda ’ for a year.”

The initial travel consideration is about whether your travel is essential or not, so for many visitors who are traveling to Bermuda for business or to begin a life here, this consideration is an easy one to decide.

In a press release by the Bermuda Tourism Authority , they said “Bermuda is open, safe and ready to welcome travelers.” Before you travel, research every part of your trip thoroughly so you can stay safe while exploring, working or living in Bermuda.

Also, remember to check whether you’ll need to self-isolate upon returning to your home country as this can differ depending on your government’s advice.

For more information on travel guidance, you can go to the CDC’s Covid-19 Travel Recommendations by Destination page.

When Do You Need to take a COVID-19 Test?

Bermuda is quite stringent when it comes to testing. All travelers over the age of nine need to take:

  • A pre-departure test no more than five days before traveling (this is a change from an earlier seven days protocol). You can upload the negative test results into Bermuda's Online Travel Authorisation application one to three days before departure.
  • A test upon arrival and on day four, eight and 14 of travel (these will be arranged for you).

There’s a mandatory $75 fee for these tests.

At each stage of your first 14 days in Bermuda, there are certain activities you are and are not permitted to do. The list of things you are permitted to do increases with every negative test. See the full Government of Bermuda’s guidance on your first 14 days in Bermuda below.

Traveller First 14 Days 201210

The only isolation period travelers need to carry out is when they immediately arrive on the island and are awaiting the results of their first test in Bermuda. Don’t worry, you get your results back in about 24 hours so you can begin to enjoy the island's offerings in no time.

Children of the ages 10-17 that are traveling to Bermuda must receive parental consent to receive a COVID-19 test. If consent isn't received, the child must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

“The Government of Bermuda is doing an incredible job managing the island’s safety,” said U.S. Consul General to Bermuda, Lee Rizzuto.

“The U.S Consulate has been heavily engaged on this issue, advocating for the island’s safety and highlighting protocols implemented by the Government of Bermuda to minimize the spread of COVID-19. ”

While this is fantastic information for Bermuda residents, business travelers and Bermudaphiles everywhere, safety is still paramount.

As with many places around the world, there are safety precautions in place. For example, in all public spaces, you’re required to wear a mask. You must also take your temperature twice a day, as a symptom of COVID-19 is a temperature registering 100F or higher.

You must practice the safety measures put in place by any business you happen to find yourself in, whether it’s a small independent shop or a large restaurant. Each establishment will have developed its own protocols, which will be explained to you when you enter.

Bermuda is displaying great levels of compliance and safety in this respect. In his remarks , Premier Burt tells the story of Evita Robinson, a speaker at the recent ‘Reset, Re-imagine & Renew’ Tourism Summit, who recently posted about her trip to the island:

"Crucially, Ms. Robinson admitted to viewers that prior to flying, the trip and the worry about infection was beginning to induce personal anxiety. However, Ms. Robinson, someone who admitted in the video travels wearing a mask, a face shield and a hazmat suit, said Bermuda’s protocols were so thorough and convenient that she did not have any anxiety either at the airport or once she was in her hotel room."

As Bermuda has a number of stringent rules in place for your safety and since July 1st has opened its doors to tourists, where is currently open for accommodation?

There are a number of hotels and other accommodation types currently open in Bermuda. Explore the list below to see just what’s available.

How to ensure travel safety in Bermuda is very well detailed. But what about the other parts of Bermuda travel that concern culture, geography and activities? Well, look no further. We’ve got the guide for you.

Exploring Life in Bermuda

Jones has gone on to say that “Bermuda is one of the safest places in the world right now, thanks to diligent testing and contact-tracing protocols. Surveys found half our visitors chose Bermuda for that reason and an overwhelming 94% feel safe or very safe here. We welcome all travellers to visit our island safely and responsibly.” That’s wonderful news for all. To get a feel for Bermuda, our guide is here to help.

Bermuda Updates And Streamlines COVID-19 Travel Protocols

Following the recent announcement of the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) loosening its health guidelines, the Bermuda Government has updated its COVID-19 protocols. Most significantly, unvaccinated travelers will be able to visit the destination beginning August 22, 2022. Previously, unvaccinated visitors 12 years and over were required to apply for a medical exemption from vaccination to enter Bermuda at least 10 days before arrival to the island.

According to the CDC , “COVID-19 continues to circulate globally, however, with so many tools available to us for reducing COVID-19 severity, there is significantly less risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death compared to earlier in the pandemic.”

“The pandemic is not over, but today, Bermuda has the necessary tools and processes in place to protect ourselves and our communities,” said BTA Interim CEO Tracy Berkeley. “Our updated travel protocols will streamline the process for visiting our island, further boosting Bermuda’s tourism comeback in 2022.”

Bermuda’s updated COVID-19 protocols include:

  • Unvaccinated residents no longer have to quarantine for four days when they return to the island, and there is no requirement for a day 10 test.
  • Unvaccinated visitors must take a Covid test, no more than two days before landing in Bermuda and then test again on day 4.
  • Unvaccinated visitors must have valid travel health insurance to enter Bermuda and must upload proof of travel health insurance to their Travel Authorisation application for approval.
  • Unvaccinated residents can take a Covid test no more than two days before landing or, if they choose not to, they must take a Covid test on arrival at the airport. They will test again on day 4, but there is no quarantine and no day 10 test.
  • Residents who previously travelled with proof of recent recovery from Covid or with a medical exemption from vaccination, no longer need to provide that proof or get that exemption. Instead, those residents will fall into the category of an unvaccinated resident and follow that testing regime: pre-arrival test and day 4 test or arrival test +and day 4 test.
  • Similarly, unvaccinated cruise passengers require a Covid test no more than two days before departing the port. Depending on the time it takes to travel to Bermuda, they may need to test again before disembarking in Bermuda. This is familiar territory for the cruise lines as Bermuda already requires additional testing for vaccinated travellers when the journey to Bermuda is longer than four days.
  • Unvaccinated mariners will get a Covid test no more than two days before departure and, as those sailing journeys to Bermuda take more than two days, we will require them to provide proof of a negative Covid test within 24hrs of arrival in Bermuda. They can do this using a telehealth service or by going to Perot Post Office. They will test again on day 4 as well. (This approach is similar to that used by the CDC for unvaccinated travellers arriving in the US.)

Cruising to Bermuda: What to Expect Year Round

Cruising to Bermuda: What to Expect Year Round

Are you considering a cruise to Bermuda ? With crystal clear waters, pink sand beaches, great food, outdoor sports, and festive celebrations, it makes for a dream destination for any traveler. If you’ve got Bermuda on your mind, you’ll be happy to learn that the island offers amazing experiences during every time of year, including the winter months. The best time to cruise to Bermuda, however, depends on what you want to do during your Bermuda cruise vacation and how you’d like the weather to be.

The busiest tourist months in Bermuda are from May to October. This is when you’ll see the biggest crowds, but you can also expect the widest availability of attractions, bars, and restaurants as well as some of the warmest weather. The temperature in Bermuda dips throughout the rest of the year, but this may not be a bad thing for every traveler. People have different reasons for wanting to visit The Rock, so here’s a breakdown of what you can expect throughout the whole year on a Bermuda cruise .

Norwegian Breakaway in Bermuda

Bermuda Weather in April

April is the first of the warm months in Bermuda and is also usually the first month of the year that cruise ships travel to the Bermuda islands . Temperatures typically stay in the 60s with the highs around 70 degrees and the lows dipping to around 63 degrees Fahrenheit. Travelers to Bermuda in April may want to pack a light jacket for the cooler times of day but can expect to enjoy up to eight hours of sunny, clear skies. Scuba diving and snorkeling are highlights for this month thanks to the water’s visibility of up to 200 feet, but the water is too cold for most divers without the help of a wetsuit. Click here to explore cruises embarking for Bermuda from April to November and experience the best way to travel to a tropical island.

Bermuda Weather in May

May is perhaps the best time to cruise to Bermuda for several reasons. It marks the beginning of summer and is the first of the peak travel months that feature the most tourist attractions. High temperatures during this month average at around 75 degrees Fahrenheit and don’t go much lower than 68 degrees during the nights and early mornings. Rainfall is also at its lowest for the year and skies are sunny and clear, making the weather perfect for outdoor exploring and water activities. May is also the warmest month that falls outside of the official hurricane season, which starts in June and lasts until November. Finally, if you’re there during the month of May, you might be able to catch the festive Bermuda day parade on the 24th.

Bermuda Weather from June to September

The months from June through September fall in the official hurricane season, but it doesn't mean that travelers should avoid Bermuda altogether during this time. Hurricanes and major storms don't pass through the islands often, and most summer vacationers in Bermuda don't experience these weather hazards. Although Bermuda is generally well prepared and equipped to handle hurricanes should they pass through the islands, travelers need to be aware of the possibility of encountering a hurricane. Aside from the slight storm risk, the weather during these months is very warm and pleasant, reaching from the low to mid-80s.

Cruise to Hamilton, Bermuda

The water is warm in Bermuda from June to September and is optimal for swimming and snorkeling. July also offers nine hours of sunshine for outdoor and water sports, which is the longest of the entire year. August is often regarded as the hottest month, but September cools down slightly while still affording great temperatures for spending time in the water. Travelers to Bermuda can experience the Harbour Nights street festival every Wednesday during these months which features dancing, art, food, and colorful costumes.

Bermuda Weather in October

October is the last month of the busy season and the second to last month of hurricane season. Temperatures begin to dip down during October but still remain optimal for water sports. Snorkelers and scuba divers will especially love the water conditions with the relatively high visibility of up to 120 feet and warm water temperatures averaging in the high 70s. On land, the temperatures fluctuate between 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the low 70s, making it much more pleasant for hiking than some of the summer months. The humidity also falls and makes the heat more bearable for those who don’t fare well in humid weather.

Bermuda Weather in November

November in Bermuda is warm, and temperatures can reach the mid-70s and dip into the high 60s at night and during the early mornings. While the water may be too cold for some, it provides good visibility and offers great experiences for snorkelers and scuba divers in wetsuits. It’s also the last month of the hurricane season, but the chance of encountering this tropical storm during November is slim. Unlike other cruise lines, Norwegian offers cruises to Bermuda during November for those who prefer cooler temperatures and want to get away from large crowds.

Where is Bermuda on a Map?

Have you ever heard of the Bermuda Triangle? Well, this infamous area is between Miami, the Caribbean, and you guessed it- the island of Bermuda.

Being a popular cruise destination, most people actually assume Bermuda is part of the Caribbean. Actually though, this beautiful island is in west of the Atlantic Ocean, 650 miles east from the coast of North Carolina.

Which Country is Bermuda in?

When counting our countries, we have mixed feelings about whether we should be counting Bermuda or not. While locals consider it their own country, technically it is a British overseas territory. This means that it is park of the United Kingdom, but it is self-governing.

Is Bermuda Considered the Caribbean?

While Bermuda shares a lot of physical characteristics with the Caribbean, it is actually 900 miles north of it! So no, Bermuda is not considered the Caribbean.

How do You Get to Bermuda from the US?

Bermuda is one of the easiest vacation destinations to visit from the US, especially from New York or Miami! You can either visit Bermuda on a cruise, or you can easily fly there on your own.

Flying to Bermuda

Bermuda has one international airport, which I have flown into once to start one of my contracts working on a cruise ship. The airport is very small, and super easy to fly into.

Bermuda International Airport is formally known as L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA), and is located in the parish of St George's, which is the north of the island.

You can find flights to Bermuda from either the US, Canada, or the UK. The cities that fly direct to Bermuda include Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Farmingdale, Fort Lauderdale, London, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh, Teterboro, Toronto, Turks & Cacios and White Plains.

Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Visiting Bermuda on a cruise is definitely one of the best ways to experience this island, especially if you are in the NYC area, Boston, or near Miami. Companies that cruise to Bermuda include Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Sea, and Royal Caribbean.

We normally go on Royal Caribbean's ship out of Bayonne, NJ, or from one of NCL's ships straight out of Manhattan (this one has incredible views sailing out!).

The shortest cruise to Bermuda you can find is 5 nights, leaving from Bayonne, Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Baltimore, giving you 2 days/one night in Bermuda. The most common itinerary is a 7-day cruise, which has 3 days/two nights in Bermuda, which is the one that we recommend. You can also find longer cruises up to fifteen days, on the more luxury ships of MSC or Oceania. These cruises leave from NY or Boston, and pair Bermuda with Caribbean islands on the itinerary.

Entry Requirements for Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Visiting Bermuda on a cruise and visiting via flight have different requirements, so here is everything you need to know.

What do U.S. Citizens Need to Travel to Bermuda?

US citizens who are flying to Bermuda will in fact need their passport.

Do You Need a Passport to go to Bermuda on a Cruise Ship?

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise ship, you actually do not NEED a passport (although we recommend it). In the case that you do not have a passport, forget it, or it is expired, you can bring your birth certificate along with your driver's license.

When you get off the ship, you will need to bring a government-issued ID with you. We suggest bringing your license, and leaving your passport on the ship.

Are There Any Covid Requirements for Bermuda?

All Covid-related requirements have now been lifted for visiting Bermuda. If you are going on a cruise, be sure to double-check with your cruise line if they require anything. Most of them by now do not require vaccinations or a negative Covid test. However, it's important to check, as every cruise line is different.

Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise: Local Adjustments

Whenever you travel somewhere new, there are things to keep in mind such as differences in language, electrical outlets, tipping, and water potability. Here are some of the things to keep in mind if you are visiting Bermuda.

What Language is Mostly Spoken in Bermuda?

The official language in Bermuda is English. The accent is actually quite unique, as it feels like a mix between the British and the American accent.

Currency Used in Bermuda

Despite being part of the UK, Bermuda does have its own currency, which is the Bermudian dollar. It is equal to the USD, so every price you see will be the same in local currency or in US dollars.

Can You Use US Dollars in Bermuda?

Being frequented by so many Americans, it is pretty common that US dollars are accepted, so you will not need to exchange your money. However, if you use USD, a lot of times change will be given in Bermudian dollars. We would suggest using your credit card when you can, and bringing small bills with you if you are paying for anything in cash.

What Type of Plug is Used in Bermuda?

Bermuda uses the same electrical outlets as the UK, which is the for the plug that has three rectangular prongs in the shape of a triangle. If you are taking a cruise to Bermuda, the cruise ships typically have both European and American outlets, but if you are visiting Bermuda by flight, you'll need to get a travel adapter .

Is the Water OK to Drink in Bermuda?

The water in Bermuda is clean, and is perfectly safe to drink from the tap. We would suggest bringing a reusable water bottle , and filling it up rather than purchasing plastic water bottles.

Is Tipping Expected in Bermuda?

The tipping culture in Bermuda is actually more similar to the US than it is to the UK. It is pretty common to tip between 15-18% or up to 20% if you've had great service. There are many restaurants that will add a service charge to the bill, so check this before adding an extra tip on top.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #1: Check Out the Iconic Horse Shoe Bay

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise for just one day, then this is a typical go-to decision for cruisers.

Horse Shoe Bay, Bermuda on a cruise

Horse Shoe Bay is the most iconic beach in Bermuda, and is definitely a must-see! It has those quintessential turquoise waters, paired with Bermuda's stunning pink sands, and gorgeous cliffs surrounding it.

Growing up going on cruises to Bermuda, this is the exact spot that my family would go each year. You can easily spend the day enjoying this beach swimming in the calm waters, exploring the small coves, and jumping off the cliffs. Just be ready for the crowds, as this is the number one tourist spot on the island! This time, we decided to go there for sunrise to escape those crowds, and actually doing that this is the time you will find all of the locals enjoying it!

Horse Shoe Bay, Bermuda on a cruise

Horse Shoe Bay is an incredible place to witness for sunrise.

Want to know more about visiting Horse Shoe Bay? We have a full guide coming up!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #2: Relax at Tobacco Bay

Another one of the most popular beaches in Bermuda is located in the north of the island, in St Georges. Tobacco Bay features stunning hues of turquoise waters, and is actually one of the best places to snorkel on the island! With unique rock formations and amazing waters, it's no wonder this spot has become so popular amongst tourists.

You can rent a chair and umbrella, or simply sit on the rocky areas for free. There is a restaurant as well, and you can rent snorkel gear to check out all of the unique marine life in this stunning cove!

Tobacco Bay is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #3: Hop Around the Lesser Known Beaches

While most people flock to Horse Shoe Bay, there are actually so many stunning beaches around Bermuda! I personally prefer to go to the smaller beaches, as this is where you'll find less crowds, and some true hidden gems.

Some of the beaches that you can add to your list are actually right near Horse Shoe Bay! Warwick Long Bay, Jobson's Cove, Stonehole Bay, and Chaplin Bay are the neighboring beaches with pinker sands, less people, and some really stunning rock formations.

Want to know a few other hidden gems? Buy us a coffee and we will reveal all of the gorgeous spots from the pictures below!

beaches in bermuda, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

One of the most fun things to do in Paraty is to visit a Cachacaria.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #4: Go Jet Skiing

As an avid cruiser, jet skiing is one of my favorite activities. While most places in the Caribbean will rent out jet skis by the hour, in Bermuda they actually do jet ski tours. So rather than just riding around, you go on a tour of some of the coolest coastal spots on the island! Jet skis can easily be found right on the pier of Kings Wharf where the cruise ships dock, making it a super accessible activity to do, and definitely one of the most fun things to do in Bermuda.

Jet skis are definitely not the cheapest excursion, but neither are most activities on this island, so it is definitely worth the splurge!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #5: Charter a Boat

If there is one thing that we loved the most during our time in Bermuda, it was this!

Sailing around Bermuda is an incredible experience, and if you have a big group, then this is truly a must. Most cruise ships offer boat trips, and you can also find them right inside the port area. However, do not do these ones! They are short 1-2 hour cruises that are jam-packed with people, and run anywhere from $90-$120/person.

For that price you can actually charter a private boat for as many hours as you'd like! We did 5 hours, but definitely could have used a few more.

Here are a couple of boat charters you can use:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #6: Go Snorkeling

There is a ton of marine life in Bermuda, so snorkeling is definitely something that you'll want to add to your list of things to do in Bermuda.

You can bring your own snorkel gear and explore the coves of different beaches, you can rent equipment at most beaches, or you can sign up for a boat tour that includes snorkeling.

If you happen to do a charter cruise, then chances are they will offer you the gear to snorkel, so it's a two-in-one. However, if you are traveling with a small group, you can find some fun boat trips that include snorkeling. We still suggest doing this outside of the cruise line, as they are cheaper online, and the tours tend to be longer.

Bermuda has incredible waters for snorkeling.

Here are a few excursions we found that include snorkeling in Bermuda:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #7: Visit Hamilton

Hamilton is one of the cities in Bermuda worth checking out, featuring  pastel-colored colonial buildings, museums, and high-end shops. The city is just an easy ferry ride away from Kings Wharf, and is a lovely place to spend some time in the evening.

Hamilton is one of the most vibrant towns in Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #8: Experience Harbour Nights

If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise in the summertime, then visiting Hamilton is a must! Every Wednesday from mid April til early September Hamilton has their famous Harbour Nights.

Starting at 7 pm and going until 10 pm there is live music, dance performances, and parades along Front Street. There are also local shops with kiosks to get handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs, as well as a variety of food stalls to try Bermudian food and drinks.

Harbour nights in Hamilton, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

Harbour nights are full of music, dancing, and food.

This is definitely one of the top things to do in Bermuda, so don't miss out!

Ferries tend to fill up very quickly, and don't run so often. Make sure to get there early so that you get a spot! The ferries you can choose from are the 5:45, 7:00, or 8:00, and are a half hour to get to Hamilton.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #9: Explore the Crystal Caves

While most of the top things to do in Bermuda have to do with the beaches, that's not all the island has to offer!

The Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves are two stunning spots to experience, and tours to visit are at the same location. You can either visit one, or you can have a combo ticket to save a bit if you decide to visit both.

The caves are open from 9 am to 5 pm, but you must take a tour. The first tour is at 9:30 am, and the last tour is at 4:30 pm for either of the caves, and 4:00 pm is the last tour for the combination of visiting both caves. Walk ins have very limited availability, so we highly suggest booking your tour in advance. You can do your reservation right on their website, or if you'd like transportation included, you can book a tour separately.

Crystal Caves, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

The Crystal Caves are one of the top things to do in Bermuda other than the beaches.

Here are some tours that include the crystal caves in them:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #10: Discover Hidden Caves

While the Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves are the most famous caves on the island, Bermuda actually has an extensive cave system, with quite a few cool ones to visit around the island!

Head over to the Blue Hole Park and you will find an area with cliffs and caves to explore, completely free of charge. You can also check out Admiral's cave, which is where you'll find people walking through a passage to a window cave, as well as cliff jumping right next to it.

Finally, there is another incredible cave called Cathedral Cave. It is located on the property of a resort, but they let us in with no issues. It's the perfect spot for a cool dip, and is truly a unique spot for free of charge!

Cathedral Cave, things to do in Bermuda

Cathedral cave is a true hidden gem of Bermuda.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #11: Book a Spa Appointment Inside a Cave

Right next to Cathedral Cave is another cave you need to see. But it's not a cave for swimming, or for touring. It actually has a full spa inside! Natura Cave Spa is seriously one of the most unique spas we have ever seen, and if we had more time (or knew about it beforehand) we definitely would have booked an appointment.

It's part of the resort Grotto Bay, which we also highly recommend staying there if you are traveling to Bermuda on your own. It has a beautiful pool area, restaurants, the Cathedral cave, its own private beach, and a full aqua park!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #12: Wander the Streets of St Georges

Hamilton isn't the only city worth visiting in Bermuda! St George's is actually the oldest English settlement on the island, and has a ton of great things to see such as churches, fortresses, and streets of beautiful pastel-colored buildings.

St George's, things to do in Bermud on a cruise

St George's is the northernmost part of the island, but can easily be reached by ferry from King's Wharf in just 45 minutes for $5 each way.

There is a ferry right from King's Wharf to St George's.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #13: Visit the Oldest Church in the Western Hemisphere

While you're in St George's, one of the top sites to check out is the St Peter's Church, which is the oldest standing Anglican church in Western Hemisphere! We heard from locals that you can also climb up the tower for some great views of the city, but unfortunately it was closed when we visited.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #14: Check Out the Unfinished Church

Just up the road from St. Peter's Church is another church worth checking out, which we actually liked even more! The church is actually a set of ruins from a neo-Gothic stone church, which was partially built in the late 1800's and was never actually completed.

unfinished church, things to do in Bermuda

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #15: Explore the Fortresses

St George's has quite a few forts lined up along the coast, some of which are more of ruins, and some which are pretty we in tact. Some of the ones that you can check out for free are Gate's Fort, Alexandra Battery, and Fort Albert. The biggest and most complete fort is Fort St. Catherine, which has a full museum, and is $7 to visit.

There are a bunch of small forts around St George's.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #16: Stop at St. David's Lighthouse

Another fun find for us was St David's Lighthouse, a cute red and white lighthouse found on St. David's Island, just under St. George's. Unfortunately you can't climb up, but it does have some pretty views due to its high location on the island.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #17: Tour the Naval Dockyard

Alright, let's head back south near King's Wharf! If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise, chances are your final day will be a half one, which means it's perfect for exploring things that are a bit closer to the ship.

Cruise ships dock right in the Naval Dockyard, which is a site in itself! There are tours you can take of the Naval Dockyard, or you can simply wander around and enjoy the dockyard yourself.

King's Wharf, things to do in Bermuda on a cruise

King's Wharf has a lot of history, and is right next to the ship.

Here is a Segway tour of the Naval Dockyard in Bermuda:

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #18: Play at One of the World's Biggest Mini Golf Courses

If you're looking for something else fun to do for the family, or simply near the cruise dock, then you're in luck! There is a brand new mini golf course just steps away from the ship, and it is one of the biggest mini golf courses in the world! With 18 challenging courses, this is a fun activity which is convenient and and great for all ages. It is open from 10 am to 10 pm, and they also offer glow-in-the-dark night time mini golf.

mini golf in Bermuda

Bermuda has one of the biggest mini golf courses in the world!

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #19: Play at the Pirate Ship and Aqua Park

Right outside the ship is a fun pirate ship to have a drink on, and we used to always go to jump off the plank into the refreshing waters around it.

Now they have expanded and actually have a full aqua park! My whole family went and had a great time having drinks and playing around there. I hurt my leg so didn't get to participate, but it definitely looked like a great activity for those wanting to do something nearby the ship. It is $30, and the pass is for the whole day.

While I personally prefer to experience more of nature, this is a good option for those who wake up late their last day in Bermuda and just want to have a bit of fun outside.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #20: Have a Night Out at Snorkel Park

One of the things I always look forward to the most in Bermuda is the night life! Every time we would visit Bermuda on a cruise we would go to Snorkel Park, which is beach club right next to the ship.

Now it has grown so much, and there are massive parties at night, and a variety of activities to experience during the day.

We didn't get to go this last time, as there was an outrageous cover charge ($50) for a private party, but we definitely suggest checking out their schedule and seeing if you can make it to one of the parties at night.

Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise #21: Attend a Special Event

Bermuda has a ton of great events that it offers! I have been there during golf retreats, sailboat races, and cricket tournaments. They also have a huge Pride Festival in August, as well as their massive 4-day Carnival celebration every June. There are parades, food, music, parties, and so much more! We suggest checking out the Bermuda event calendar, as there are a ton of great events to experience in Bermuda all year long.

How Do Tourists Get Around in Bermuda?

Bermuda is a small island, making it very easy to get around! You can find a variety of ways to get around such as local buses, taxis, ferries and rentals.

The Different Ways to Get Around Bermuda

Buses in bermuda.

Most places in Bermuda can be accessed by taking one of the public buses. Prices depend on the parish in which you are traveling, and rides are pretty affordable.

Taxis in Bermuda

Taxis in Bermuda are pretty much the same as taking a bus, in that the more people you have doesn't make a difference in the price. Drivers charge per head, and often cram as many people as possible into their vans. Often taxis will hover around hot spots and offer the same routes as buses, but try to get you to go with them to go faster.

The good thing is that you may get to leave faster, and if you have a big group you won't have to wait for the bus. You also might be able to bargain a bit for the price, and get it to a similar price as a bus would be. The downside is that they won't leave until they fill their van, which may mean you won't leave as soon as you would like.

Ferries in Bermuda

As far as public transportation goes, the ferry is definitely our favorite way to get around Bermuda. The ferries have similar prices to the buses, and connect King's Wharf, Hamilton, and St. George's, as well as Rockaway and Warwick. There are also stops in Watford Bridge, Cavello Bay, and Paget, across the four different ferries lines that are offered.

Below is the info for the ferry schedule this summer which we got from the official site:

Scooter Rentals in Bermuda

This is hands-down our favorite way to get around Bermuda! A scooter gives you the freedom to explore all that Bermuda has to offer, and is perfect for the adventurous should out there, or those that want to see it all while visiting Bermuda on a cruise.

We got our scooter for 3 days for $77. The more days you rent, the cheaper it is, and you can typically fit 2 people on one scooter.

scooter rental in Bermuda

Rental Cars in Bermuda

For a while it was actually illegal for tourists to rent cars in Bermuda! Now there is actually a company though that rents out tiny electric cars. This is definitely the most expensive option, starting at $130/day, typically for a 1-2 seater. The plus side to having the car over a scooter though is that you have more room for your belongings, and are protected more in case the weather isn't favorable.

rental cars in Bermuda

Bermuda has small electric cars for rent.

Bike Rentals in Bermuda

Another fun way to get around for cheap is by renting a bike. It's super easy, as they are scattered around the island, and you can rent it straight from the app.

bike rental in Bermuda

Bikes are a super cheap and fun way to get around Bermuda.

What is the Cheapest Way to Get Around Bermuda?

The cheapest way to get around Bermuda definitely depends on how much you'd like to do! If you plan on staying near the port, or doing just 1 area per day, then the cheapest way will definitely be by taking the local buses.

If you plan on exploring a lot, then the scooter will be well worth it! We drove around the entire island, and only had to fill our tank once for $5, totaling just over $40 each to go everywhere in a 3 day span.

Are There Ubers in Bermuda?

Bermuda does not have Uber, nor does it have a ton of private taxis. If you want to get somewhere fast, then you may have to share your ride with other people, or wait for the taxi to fill up before getting from one destination to the next.

If you do have a specific ride in mind (for example to or from your hotel), you can ask a local to call and reserve a taxi for you.

Where to Stay in Bermuda If You Are Not Cruising

If you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise, you won't have to worry about your accommodation. However, if you plan to visit Bermuda by plane, then you'll need to choose a nice place to stay.

As far as location goes, we would suggest either staying in Hamilton or St. George's. These are the most well-connected, and also have plenty of activities, as well as dining options.

If you plan on moving around by scooter or rental car, then we would suggest staying at one of the resorts that are in the center of the island. We particularly loved the look of Grotto Bay , as it had a ton of amenities, and was nearby a lot of great attractions!

Local Food & Drink

One of our favorite parts of traveling is to experience the local flavors of where we go! Bermuda happens to be a very expensive island though, so if you are visiting Bermuda on a cruise, we would suggest spending most of your meals on the ship. That being said, we do suggest saving some room for the street food on front street in Hamilton during their harbor nights!

What Food is Popular in Bermuda?

Bermuda's cuisine has influence from both the UK, and the Caribbean. Fish is plentiful, and codfish is one of the most common which is incorporated into their diet. As far as drinks go, rum is the most prominent, and the native brand is Goslings, which you'll find all over the shops, bars, and restaurants.

Here are a few of the foods that are the most popular in Bermuda:

  • Fish & Chips: this British classic brought its way over to the island
  • Fish Sandwich: a go-to for locals on their lunch break
  • Jerk Chicken: slow-cooked with a slightly spicy sauce
  • Fish Chowder: the national dish, which uses Goslings rum and spicy peppers poured over it
  • Codfish breakfast: boiled codfish topped with a tomato and onion sauce, and seared with boiled potatoes, hard boiled eggs, avocado, and a banana on the side
  • Mussel Pie:  a pie made with steamed mussels, often times with curry
  • Fish Cakes:  patty of salted codfish, potatoes, and onion, which is fried

What is the Drink of Choice in Bermuda?

The drink of choice in Bermuda is certainly rum! Goslings is the most popular brand that you will find, and can easily be purchased in shops, or found in all bars and restaurants. There are two popular drinks in Bermuda that are a must-try: the Rum Swizzle, and the Dark N' Stormy:

  • Rum Swizzle:  the national drink featuring Goslings rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon, Bermuda falernum, and bitters
  • Dark N' Stormy:  Goslings rum and ginger beer

How Safe is Bermuda for Tourists?

Bermuda is a very safe island! While the Caribbean has many more dodgy areas,n you'll have nothing to worry about on the island of Bermuda. We've walked around at night, and explored all over before the sun came up, and always felt very safe.

If you happen to visit the beaches for sunrise, you'll actually find that this is when all of the locals are out enjoying the places before the sun becomes intense, and before all of the tourists take over.

We went to Horseshoe Bay for sunrise, and it was very busy with local Bermudians. Everyone was so friendly, and being a small island, everyone is always smiling at one another, and genuinely in a good mood. The vibe in Bermuda is so great, and unlike many Caribbean islands, there is no haggling or harassment, making it so pleasant visiting Bermuda as a tourist.

Other Things to Know About Visiting Bermuda on a Cruise

Now that you know almost everything you need to know about visiting Bermuda on a cruise (or in general), here are a few other things to keep in mind while visiting.

Weather in Bermuda

Bermuda has tropical climate, and is pretty similar to the Caribbean. However, unlike the Caribbean islands, temperatures can drop in Bermuda in the winter time. We've heard from locals that temperatures in December and January can drop down to the sixties, or sometimes even as low as the fifties!

The summers are extremely hot and humid, and the sun is very strong in Bermuda. Overall, Bermuda has much warmer weather than most places in the US year-round, and it makes a great tropical escape.

best months to visit Bermuda

Bermuda is a tropical island with a lot of sunshine.

What Month is Bermuda Best to Visit?

The best time to visit Bermuda is either a little before the summer, or after, when the weather is milder, and it is less crowded. After speaking with locals, we've gathered that the best months to visit Bermuda are in April or May, or in November.

From June to August the weather is extremely hot, and this is when the island becomes the most crowded, while August to October is hurricane season. March is spring break for Americans, which is when you'll see the most children, and the months of March, July, and August are when cruises are the most expensive.

If you'd like to escape the crowds, and have the most pleasant temperatures, then the spring and late fall are the most ideal for visiting Bermuda. If you'd like to experience Harbour nights, then definitely make sure you visit between the months of May to August, and if you'd like to experience Bermuda's carnival, June will be the best month to visit.

Bermuda has warm weather for the majority of the year.

How Do You Pack for Bermuda?

If you plan on visiting Bermuda on a cruise, here are some of the things we suggest bringing with you:

  • Reusable Water Bottle (we use this water bottle from Cafago because it holds the temperature)
  • Flip Flops (we personally always get Havaiana flip flops , as they are comfy and long lasting)
  • Zippered Bag or Backpack - take a look at these backpacks for travelers!
  • Power Bank (we use Anker power banks , as they are super long lasting and sturdy)
  • Bathing Suit
  • Light, casual clothing for the evening
  • Drone (We use the Mavic Mini Pro 3 because it's super light and doesn't sacrifice quality)
  • Action Camera (we use the Insta 360 X3 because it's small & waterproof)
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch (we use the Cafago Waterproof Phone Pouch )
  • Dry Bag (for water activities)
  • License (if you'd like to rent a scooter, and as mandatory ID for when you get off the ship)

Here are a few things you should also bring for your cruise vacation:

  • White outfit (most cruise lines have a white night)

Is Bermuda A Good Place To Cruise?

by The Cruise Web Team March 14, 2022, 3:51 pm

In a world full of choices, Bermuda cruises remain one of the most popular for cruisers – especially for those cruising from the East Coast! So, it’s a popular destination, but is Bermuda a good place to cruise? Absolutely! Keep reading! We’ll explore the top reasons to take a Bermuda cruise and the only question you’ll have left is “When can I leave?”

Top 3 Reasons Bermuda is a Good Place to Cruise

If we could keep you reading all day, we could list everything that makes Bermuda a good place to cruise, but since your time is valuable, we’ll just run through our top 3 reasons you should cruise to Bermuda:

Bermuda Cruises Are Family-Friendly

Bermuda is the perfect place to cruise with the whole family! Many of the cruise lines that embark on cruises to Bermuda have onboard activities for kids – and some are supervised! Whether your family likes to zip around a go-kart track on a Norwegian Bermuda cruise , or coast down some of the tallest waterslides at sea with Royal Caribbean or even just relax by the pool, there is something for every member of the family on a Bermuda cruise, making it one of the ideal destinations for multi-generational travel.

Not a watersliding, go-kart racing big ship cruiser? Not to worry! For those looking to enjoy a quiet, perhaps even romantic cruise to Bermuda, in luxurious comfort, look no further than Oceania Cruises or the plush, all inclusive Regent Seven Seas ! Both of these lines offer incredible itineraries featuring Bermuda.

Once you are onshore in Bermuda, rest assured that this is a safe destination where your family can enjoy quality time on the beautiful beaches.

Activities For Everyone, Every Step Of The Way

Cruises to Bermuda typically feature a few days at sea, which is your chance to explore everything your ship has to offer! Many ships offer adventure activities for the thrill seeker in your life, pool decks for sipping cocktails and of course, onboard entertainment that rivals Broadway!

A cruise to Bermuda typically features up to three ports in the island nation, each with unique and exciting shoreside activities for everyone in your party. In Hamilton , the activities are highlighted by some of the best golf courses in the world! Fun fact: Bermuda has more golf courses per square mile than any other place in the world! For the family, Royal Naval Dockyard is a great place to explore on your Bermuda cruise, by enjoying some activities that are perfect for all ages! A fan favorite, though, is crossing off a bucket list item by swimming with dolphins. St. George’s, Bermuda is one of the most well-rounded cruise destinations in the world! History buffs can explore 18 th century English forts while the nature lovers explore the world-renowned Crystal Caves and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Tobacco Bay.

Most of the time, these cruises will depart, enjoy a day at sea before exploring on of Bermuda’s beautiful cruise ports and then head back, perfect for a long weekend! Here’s a few of our favorite short cruises to Bermuda:

Norwegian Prima 5 Night Bermuda – New York (NYC/NYC) Departing From New York, New York (Oct 2022 – Mar 2023)

These special itineraries will allow for more time exploring the exciting shore excursions available and also feature an overnight in port, giving you the chance to get down with the local nightlife! Here’s a couple of our favorite week-long cruises to Bermuda:

Is Bermuda Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Bermuda

Bermuda is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom located in the North Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Hatteras, which is composed of 7 main islands and many more rocks and islets.

More than half of the population is of African provenance, while the other one is constituted of British, American, and Portuguese people and this explains why the official language is English while they also speak some Portuguese.

The main economic growth factor that makes the island move only up can be considered the financial sector and tourism due to its famous pink sand beaches and fabulous shores.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Bermuda

OVERALL RISK: LOW

Almost all the risks that can somehow affect you are related to the beach and mainly the so-called Portuguese Man of War that looks like a jellyfish but its bite is not fatal and rip currents.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: MEDIUM

You should be very attentive as all the taxi drivers of Bermuda are self-employed, meaning that they are not regulated by a company and as a result not very safe, but it is also advisable to take a taxi for night walks from airports as other means of transportation can not be found at that time.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

Pickpockets are often met here as it is a touristic destination and as a result, there are some registered cases by the public authorities, which should make you more attentive and have a closer look at your belongings.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

The hurricane season in Bermuda is considered to be from June until November when it is also advisable to follow all the indications of the public authorities as well as the National Hurricane Center's advice.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

There are few cases of mugging that are registered on the island that have somehow affected tourists, but still, this does not mean that you should be fearless. A good piece of advice would be to not walk alone and be very attentive in order to avoid any unpleasant situation that can occur.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

Even though there are no historical data related to the recent terrorist attacks, there is always a chance of that happening due to some conflicts of interest with other countries. This is why it is advisable to look at your surroundings and staying safe.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

As everywhere in the world there are scammers on the islands but these could be easily avoided through using your common sense and trying not to be easily influenced.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Overall it is considered to be a safe place for all travelers but it is still advisable for females as it is everywhere in the world not to travel alone. If this is happening then choose wisely your accommodation, do not try to look very expensive and always tell someone where are you going.

  • So... How Safe Is Bermuda Really?

Even if Bermuda is not one of the most famous and visited places in the world, it has its special beauty as well as factors that should be taken into account while traveling in order to enjoy your holiday.

Even though there are some registered criminal cases it is well-known that very rarely this implies tourists, but this does not mean that you should be fearless.

Keep in mind all pieces of advice and you will be more than safe in Bermuda.

  • How Does Bermuda Compare?
  • Useful Information

What is interesting to notice is that British passport holders do not need a visa for entering Bermuda as a visitor, while others should get specifically informed depending on their nationality on the website of the British Embassy.

The locally used currency is considered to be Bermuda Dollar, but the US dollar is widely accepted as well on the islands.

Bermuda has a very mild climate, which means that there are quite abundant annual precipitations and quite a big difference in temperature between seasons.

Bermuda International Airport is the main international airport in Bermuda that operates flights to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Travel Insurance

At least 8 weeks before traveling check the national site of the island in order to be aware of all the updates made related to the travel insurance. But also keep in mind that it is always recommended to have travel insurance while traveling, no matter the destination and Bermuda is not an exception.

5 Reviews on Bermuda

My husband and I went to Bermuda in 2018 and LOVED it! We planned on going back in 2020 but then the pandemic happened. We wanted to go this year, but again the pandemic stopped us. We are hoping to go back in the spring of 2022. I felt it was the safest place I had traveled to overall and highly recommend anyone thinking of going to just go! You will love it!

As safe as can be

I love coming here and going to the beach, it can get a bit pricey with the flights there but it’s definitely worth it. awesome place for a relaxing vacation.

As for safety, I was just wondering what this website might say but seriously, this is HEAVEN, I feel safer here than anywhere else.

Spectacular beaches

I enjoyed our quick holiday in Bermuda! We had friends who were getting married there and we were there to witness the ceremony. It is quite expensive though, which makes sense I guess since a lot of things they have to import to the island. The beaches are spectacular and I guess that would be the main highlight of your visit. Its a quick flight from New York, so if you need a quick breather you might as well check Bermuda out.

One of the safest, most beautiful places on the globe!

Is Bermuda the idyllic place to visit or even get married in? That was just one of the questions I was asking myself before going there. The main downside of Bermuda is the prices which can be pretty high. Other than this, there’s not much I can say that would be on the negative side. I wouldn’t shop here because it’s just not worth paying extra dollars just to get the same things you can get at home. If you can get a good package that is within your budget then you should think about it. Bermuda, in my humble opinion, is well worth the trip and costs.

Bermuda is quite close to a lot of Northeastern cities from the US which makes it an even better choice for people living in these cities.

Safety wise, it’s super safe. I felt very safe here and didn’t hear anyone say they were mugged or pickpocketed or things of the sort. Taxis will cost more than you expect and its best to just ask how much it will cost before you go on the ride. It’s always better to take a taxi if you want to go out at night as there aren’t any other means of transportation.

As soon as you get off the plane and “enter” Bermuda you will smile when seeing those magnificent, calm waters, the hospitable and friendly people, feel the breeze on your cheeks and look at the nice colored houses with white roofs. It’s a moment that will stick with you the first time you experience it. It has stuck with me.

I highly recommend you go to Bermuda’s Southampton Parish which is considered one of the very best beaches in the entire world. Once you get there you’ll know why. I can’t explain it in words, you have to be there. Also, make sure to visit the Crystal and Fantasy Caves which are stunning, there’s no other word to describe them properly. This place is a perfect one for a spectacular wedding.

I am planning to travel to Bermuda with my parents and children in July 2022. Is it safe to visit with the current circumstances?

As the world starts to reopen and travel becomes more accessible, many people are looking forward to going on a cruise again. Bermuda, with its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, is a popular destination for cruise ships. However, before you embark on your journey, it's important to know if there are any specific vaccination requirements for traveling to Bermuda on a cruise.

Bermuda, like many other travel destinations, has implemented certain measures to ensure the safety of its residents and visitors during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As of now, Bermuda requires all visitors arriving by cruise ship to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Being fully vaccinated means that you have received all the required doses of the vaccine and have allowed enough time for it to take effect. Exploring Air Travel Baggage Restrictions in California: What You Need to Know

As the world continues to navigate the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, various travel restrictions and quarantine requirements have been put in place to help mitigate the spread of the virus. For travelers considering a cruise to Bermuda, one important question to ask is whether there are any quarantine requirements for passengers arriving via a cruise ship.

Bermuda, a popular destination for cruise ships, has implemented several measures to ensure the safety of its residents and visitors. As of the time of writing, there are indeed quarantine requirements for passengers arriving in Bermuda via a cruise ship.

Before embarking on the cruise ship, passengers must complete the Bermuda travel authorization process. This involves completing an online form and providing information such as vaccination status, travel history, and contact details. Once the travel authorization has been approved, passengers can proceed with their plans.

Upon arrival in Bermuda, passengers will be subject to specific quarantine requirements based on their vaccination status. Fully vaccinated passengers, meaning those who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before their arrival in Bermuda, are not required to quarantine. However, they are still required to undergo a PCR test upon arrival and on day 4, 8, and 14 of their stay.

Non-vaccinated or partially vaccinated passengers, on the other hand, have different quarantine requirements. Non-vaccinated passengers are required to quarantine for 14 days at their accommodation or at a designated quarantine hotel. They will also be required to undergo PCR testing on arrival and on day 4, 8, and 14. Partially vaccinated passengers, who have received only one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, are subject to a shorter quarantine period of 7 days. They must also undergo the same testing requirements as non-vaccinated passengers.

It is important to note that these requirements are subject to change as the situation evolves and new variants of the virus emerge. It is recommended that travelers check the latest guidelines and requirements from the official Bermuda government website or consult with their cruise line for the most up-to-date information before planning their trip.

In conclusion, there are quarantine requirements for passengers arriving in Bermuda via a cruise ship. The specific requirements vary depending on the vaccination status of the passengers, with fully vaccinated individuals being exempt from quarantine but still required to undergo testing. It is important for travelers to stay informed about the latest guidelines and requirements to ensure a smooth and safe journey.

The Latest BC Travel Restrictions: What You Need to Know

Before boarding a cruise ship bound for Bermuda, passengers are required to provide certain documents and proof of vaccination. These requirements are in place to ensure the safety of all passengers and to comply with the regulations set by the Bermuda government.

First and foremost, all passengers are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This means that they must have received all doses of the approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the cruise departure date. Proof of vaccination is a must, and passengers will need to provide documentation showing that they have received the necessary doses.

The accepted forms of proof of vaccination may vary depending on the cruise line, but in general, passengers can provide one of the following documents:

  • COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card: This is the most common and widely accepted form of proof. It is a physical card that passengers receive when they get vaccinated. The card includes information such as the vaccine manufacturer, date of administration, and lot number. Passengers will need to show this card to the cruise line for verification.
  • Digital Vaccine Passport: Some cruise lines may accept digital vaccine passports or certificates. These are electronic records that provide proof of vaccination. Passengers can download and store these documents on their smartphones or other electronic devices. These digital certificates are usually linked to a government or healthcare database and can be easily verified by the cruise line.
  • Other Valid Documentation: In some cases, cruise lines may accept other forms of vaccination documentation, such as a letter from a healthcare provider or a digital record from a state or government health department. These documents should clearly state the passenger's name, date of vaccination, and the type of vaccine received.

It is important for passengers to check the specific requirements of their cruise line before traveling to ensure they have the proper documentation. The cruise line will provide detailed instructions on how and when to submit the proof of vaccination.

Passengers should also be prepared to show their proof of vaccination multiple times during their journey, including at the embarkation port, during onboard activities, and when disembarking in Bermuda. It is recommended to keep a copy of the vaccination documentation in case the original documents get lost or damaged.

In addition to the vaccination requirements, passengers may also need to comply with other COVID-19 safety measures, such as pre-travel testing, mask-wearing, and social distancing guidelines. These requirements can vary depending on the cruise line and the current regulations in place.

It is important for passengers to stay updated with the latest information from the cruise line and the Bermuda government regarding the documentation and requirements for travel. By following these guidelines and providing the necessary proof of vaccination, passengers can enjoy a safe and smooth journey to Bermuda.

Unveiling the Mystery – The Bermuda Triangle

The bermuda triangle: an overview.

The Bermuda Triangle, a name that conjures up images of lost ships and planes, unexplained phenomena, and age-old legends, is one of the most intriguing mysteries of the sea.

Geographically, it is defined by its three vertices: Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, forming a triangle in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean.

This expanse, covering about 500,000 square miles, has been the subject of speculation and intrigue for decades.

Historical Background

The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle began to capture public attention in the early 20th century.

It gained notoriety through a series of unexplained disappearances:

  • The USS Cyclops (1918): A U.S. Navy ship vanished without a trace along with its 306 crew members and passengers, marking one of the largest losses of life in U.S. Naval history not involving combat.
  • Flight 19 (1945): A group of five U.S. Navy bombers disappeared during a training flight. The search plane sent after them also vanished, deepening the mystery.
  • SS Marine Sulphur Queen (1963): This tanker, carrying molten sulphur, disappeared off the southern coast of Florida, with no trace ever found.

These and other incidents have fueled a myriad of theories ranging from natural phenomena to extraterrestrial interventions.

Exploration and Early Myths

The area’s history is rich with legends, some dating back to the time of Christopher Columbus, who reported strange compass readings and unusual lights in the sky.

Over time, the Bermuda Triangle became a topic of folklore, with tales of the lost city of Atlantis and the mythical underwater world of mermaids often associated with the region.

Scientific Explanations vs. Popular Myths

While the Bermuda Triangle continues to be a topic for speculation, scientists have attempted to provide rational explanations for the disappearances. These include:

  • Environmental Factors: The Gulf Stream, a strong ocean current found in the region, is known for its swift and turbulent nature, which could potentially mislead sailors and aviators.
  • Methane Hydrates: Scientists suggest that eruptions of methane gas from the ocean floor could theoretically sink ships by reducing the density of the water.
  • Human Error and Technology: Navigational errors and technological failures are also considered plausible explanations for the many incidents in this area.

The Bermuda Triangle in Popular Culture

The Bermuda Triangle has been a popular subject in books, movies, and television shows, often depicted as a zone of paranormal activities and alien encounters.

This portrayal has significantly influenced public perception, making the Bermuda Triangle a symbol of the mysterious and unexplained.

To find out why Bermuda is a great place for a holiday/vacation, read the article below:

8 Reasons Why Your Next Cruise Should Be To Bermuda – Tried And Tested

Cruises To The Bahamas

Much of the Bahamas are within the Bermuda Triangle area.

The Bahamas are actually made up of around 700 islands but only 30 or so are inhabited.

I cruised to the Bahamas a few years ago. It was possible to find really cheap cruises to this part of the world, we sailed from Miami, and the cost of our inside cabin on Norwegian Sky cost us less than booking a hotel on land!

Cruises To The Caribbean

If you are cruising to the Caribbean from the East Coast of the USA you will pass through the Bermuda Triangle.

Many cruises which sail this type of route actually stop in Bermuda.

If you are cruising to the Caribbean from Miami you will avoid most of the Triangle – or you may just stray onto the borderline.

I sailed recently on a really cheap cruise to the Caribbean from Barbados. To find out all about it and why it was so cheap, watch the video below:

Which Cruise Lines Sail Through The Bermuda Triangle?

Most US-based cruise lines travel regularly through the Bermuda Triangle.

A few that do are as follows:

Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Oceania, Azamara, Celebrity, Crystal, Disney, Viking and Virgin Voyages .

Why Is Bermuda a Controversial Cruise Destination?

If you sail to Bermuda from America or the Caribbean, you will sail through the waters around it, known as “The Bermuda Triangle.” This area is also known as ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ and “Hurricane Alley.”

A number of planes and ships have disappeared here over the years.

Many people believe that the circumstances of plane and ship disappearances are “mysterious.” However, it is more than likely they were caused by severe weather.

The Bermuda Triangle has been a source of controversy since the 1950s .

Some of the Many Interesting Facts about the Bermuda Triangle:

  • The Bermuda Triangle is also called the “Devil’s Triangle” and “Hurricane Alley.”
  • The term “Bermuda Triangle” was first used in 1964 . The phrase was used by writer Vincent Gaddis, in a magazine article
  • It is sometimes said to be the resting place of the famous “Lost City of Atlantis. ” There is no verifiable proof that links the geographic anomalies in the triangle to the lost city.
  • It covers an area of 500,000 square miles . It stretches from Miami, Florida, to Bermuda Island and to San Juan in Puerto Rico.
  • The Bermuda Triangle lies near crucial shipping lanes. This means there is more traffic in the region, which could be a reason for a higher number of maritime accidents.
  • The Bermuda Triangle has one of the deepest ocean trenches on the planet. The seabed has a slightly sloping continental shelf and then an extremely deep “drop-off.” If a ship or plane crashes or sinks in this region, it could sink into the trench, and never be found again.
  • The compass points to True North, not the Magnetic North in the Bermuda Triangle area . This phenomenon leads to confusion in navigation, another reason why ships and planes veer off from their set course and get lost.

Cruises Specifically To Visit The Bermuda Triangle

Due to the Bermuda Triangle’s popularity “Bermuda Triangle” cruises have actually started appearing.

These are not run by the big cruise lines and focus more on the story of the Bermuda Triangle.

Trips sail from Bermuda and probably just float around for a bit before coming back to land. I imagine that the Bermuda Triangle in reality probably is a little underwhelming!

Cruise Ship Incidents in The Bermuda Triangle

In 2015 the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn “Ran Aground” near Bermuda.

Apparently, paranormal enthusiasts say that the area is cursed – although it sounds much more likely to me that the ship just got stuck on a bit of a coral reef!

The high tide pushed the ship off the reef into deeper water, and there were no injuries to the crew or passengers.

Is It Dangerous To Cruise Through The Bermuda Triangle?

There is an element of danger with any form of travel.

It isn’t more dangerous to cruise through the Bermuda Triangle than to cruise in any other part of the world that might experience similar extreme weather.

There has never been a modern mega-ship that has disappeared within the Bermuda Triangle .

Weather in Bermuda

Bermuda has a subtropical climate and the temperatures are normally between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit / 15 to 26 degrees Celsius

Bermuda has no rainy season. Heavy downpours (often at night in the summer) don’t usually last longer than a couple of hours.

The hurricane season in Bermuda officially runs from June 1 to November 30.

The weather in Bermuda and in the Bermuda Triangle can sometimes be stormy.

Cruises to the Caribbean – especially in hurricane season – are well known for having to avoid storms from time to time.

What Do Cruise Ships Do If A Hurricane Is Forecast?

Cruise Ship itineraries are often modified if a storm is approaching. Cruise ships will do their best to miss the worst of the storm.

Due to improvements in weather forecasting, it is often possible to know quite far in advance if the weather is likely to be bad.

If a storm is likely to happen during a cruise the cruise line can:

  • Miss a port.
  • Return earlier than scheduled.
  • Change the itinerary to avoid the storm.
  • Cancel the cruise completely (as a last resort).

Bermuda Tourism Authority point out on its website that although Hurricanes do sometimes come, they are well prepared! They do not want the risk of a Hurricane to put you off travelling to Bermuda …

Four key things to know: 1 . Most hotels have “hurricane guarantees” that provide refunds or future complimentary stays. 2. The island usually gets plenty of advance notice of an approaching storm. 3 . The emergency services are very well-versed in storm preparation. 4. Bermuda’s stone buildings are incredibly strong and many have withstood hurricanes for centuries Bermuda Tourism Authority

Incidents at Sea in The Bermuda Triangle

These are just some of the reported incidents within the triangle in the last 100 years. Note that none of these incidents happened to large cruise ships – and most incidents can be explained by weather.

  • 1918: USS Cyclops left Barbados on March 4, and was lost with all 306 crew and passengers.
  • 1921: Carroll A. Deering was found aground and abandoned.
  • 1925: SS Cotopaxi  bound for Havana, Cuba, radioed a distress call reporting that the ship was sinking. She and her 32 crew members were never found.
  • 1941: USS Proteus was lost with all 58 persons on board in heavy seas. The following month, her sister ship  USS Nereus was lost with all 61 persons on board.
  • 1958: Revonoc was lost with owner Harvey Conover and four others between Key West and Miami Florida in a Hurricane.
  • 1963: SS Marine Sulphur Queen was lost with 39 crewmen. In the investigation, the Coast Guard determined that the ship was unsafe and not seaworthy, and never should have sailed.
  • 2015: In July 2015 , two 14-year-old boys, Austin Stephanos, and Perry Cohen went on a fishing trip in their 19-foot boat. Despite the 15,000 square nautical miles wide search by US Coast Guard, the pair’s boat was found a year later off the coast of Bermuda, but the boys were never seen again.
  • 2015: SS El Faro , with a crew of 33 aboard, sank off of the coast of the Bahamas. Search crews identified the vessel 15,000 feet below the surface. She had been sailing close to “Tropical Storm Joaquin.” Two days later, after Joaquin had become a Category 4 hurricane, the vessel likely encountered swells of 20 to 40 ft (6 to 12 m) and winds over 80 knots.  A $100 million lawsuit was filed against the ship owners by a family member of one of the missing crew – citing negligence on the company’s behalf in letting a non-seaworthy vessel sail into a hurricane.

What is it Like Cruising Through The Bermuda Triangle?

I have cruised through the Bermuda Triangle three times – and it wasn’t any different to sailing in any other part of the world!

If you are considering a cruise, please do not be put off by the alarming Bermuda Triangle stories!

I asked members of our Facebook Group if they have cruised through the Bermuda Triangle. Below are some of their responses:

I have! Honestly it was as flat as bath water. I don’t think anyone would have noticed that we were sailing through it had the Captain not announced it! Victoria

I think this is most people’s experience! Certainly, it was for me and my family…

Yes, with absolutely no problems. The only issues were a severe storm and the captain sailed us to safety, but we still travelled through it. We have been through it 3 times now. Susan

Susan’s story isn’t out of the ordinary. Cruise lines are very good at avoiding storms!

Shaped by British, Portuguese, West Indian, and African cultures, Bermuda is fringed by teeming coral reefs and the almost impossibly turquoise waters of the Sargasso Sea, due east of South Carolina. This sub-tropical paradise, which blends history with a contemporary and very inviting way of life, is an easy escape from the East Coast. But the island is still a world apart—and a luxury cruise to Bermuda is the perfect way to enjoy this exclusive destination.

Days drift by in a delightful blend of scuba diving, golfing, exploring art galleries and historic fortifications, or simply relaxing on exquisite pink sand beaches. Let Celebrity show you Bermuda’s many charms, with blissful days at sea to unwind on either side of your time on this fascinating island.

Featured Highlights

Pink beaches.

Bermuda’s beaches are famous not just for their beauty but for their blush-pink sand, caused by the presence of tiny, ground up shells. Horseshoe Bay Beach is the most famous, with clear, teal-blue water and tumbled rocks. Warwick Long Bay is adorned with rock outcrops and has pretty tide pools to explore. Elbow Beach is the place to head for a livelier scene, with bars, restaurants, and watersports facilities, as well as a shallow reef, teeming with fish.

Scuba Diving

Bermuda’s coral reefs and rocks have claimed more than 300 wrecks over time, making this one of the world’s top dive sites. Warm, glass-clear water and the fact that many of the wrecks lie in as little as 30 feet of water make Bermuda a dream for novice divers, too. What’s more, the underwater life is spectacular. You should see blue angelfish, parrotfish, spiny lobster, silvery jacks, wrasse, and graceful eagle rays, as well as coral in brilliant colors.

Colorful History

Step back in time in the National Museum of Bermuda in the Royal Naval Dockyard to learn about 400 years of the island’s history, from antique maps and cannons to treasures rescued from shipwrecks. Learn about the island’s role in both World Wars, and the darker days of the slave trade. UNESCO-protected St. George’s, too, is a fascinating insight into the past, with colorful old buildings and cobblestone streets to explore, as well as the 17th century St. Peter’s Church.

What are the best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise?

From naval history to pretty country villages, hiking trails, and pink sand beaches, there are endless things to do during your time in Bermuda. Our itineraries spend two nights docked here, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.

One of the best things to do is to snorkel over the coral reefs and multiple wrecks that surround the island. There are some fascinating museums, too; the National Museum of Bermuda, located in a fort at the Royal Naval Dockyard, takes you through 400 years of history. Historic St. George’s is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 45 minutes from the port by ferry, with narrow cobblestone lanes, colorful old homes, and quaint churches.

If you’re an active traveler, there’s all manner of watersports to try, as well as world-class golf, and cycling or hiking the historic 18-mile Railway Trail. Explore the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, where you’ll see dramatic stalagmites and stalactites and a shimmering underground lake.

There’s also excellent craft shopping in Bermuda, much of it within Royal Naval Dockyard.

Look out for rum, rum cake, spicy pepper sauces, ceramics, linen, locally made fragrances, cedarwood items, and the famous Bermuda shorts.

When is the best time to cruise to Bermuda?

Bermuda’s peak season is from May to October, with July and August the warmest and sunniest months. May has the lowest rainfall. Just outside of the high season, you should still enjoy pleasant weather. Months with lower humidity, particularly April, make exploring easy.

What should I pack?

Depending on the time of year you’ve chosen, pack for a subtropical climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes (if you’re visiting coral beaches), and reef-friendly sunblock.

A light waterproof jacket is handy for the occasional rain showers. Consider bringing comfortable walking shoes; Bermuda is a very walkable place with some wonderful hikes.

If you intend to play golf, check the dress code of the courses you want to play. A collared shirt with sleeves and shorts the length of Bermuda shorts is standard.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What travel documents are required?

Round-trip cruises from Cape Liberty to Bermuda are known as “closed-loop cruises” for which U.S. citizens do not require a passport.

According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, acceptable forms of identity include an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth.

For transatlantic cruises that call at Bermuda, all visitors will need a valid passport.

Where do cruises depart from?

Our Bermuda cruises depart from Cape Liberty, New Jersey. Bermuda is also a stop on several of our transatlantic cruises, which depart from Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Barcelona, and Lisbon.

How long does it take to get to Bermuda?

The sailing time between Cape Liberty and Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard is two days, during which you’ll have plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the many amenities of the ship. On the return journey, you’ll have one day and two nights at sea.

On a westbound Transatlantic cruise, you’ll have four days at sea between the Azores and Bermuda. On an eastbound voyage, you’ll leave Tampa and arrive in Bermuda after three days at sea. If you depart from Fort Lauderdale, there will be two days at sea before reaching the island.

What’s the weather like?

Bermuda is located in the Atlantic Ocean, a long way north of the Caribbean, and enjoys a temperate, subtropical climate. In other words, you can expect summers to be warm and sunny, with temperatures around the mid-80s, and high humidity.

May to October is considered the high season, with April and November bringing slightly cooler but still pleasant weather. Expect average highs of 68°F in April and 72°F in November.

What currency is used in Bermuda?

Bermuda’s currency is the Bermuda Dollar, which is tied to the U.S. Dollar. You can use U.S. dollars in most places on the island, although you may be given change in Bermuda dollars.

Where can I see pink sand beaches?

Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful pink sand beaches, where rocky outcrops fringe the sweep of pink and there are umbrellas and beach chairs available to rent. Warwick Long Bay, one of the longest beaches, has pale pink sand and great snorkeling close to the shore. Tiny Jobson’s Cove, nearby, is almost entirely hemmed in by rocks and is safe for swimming in the turquoise shallows.

Also nearby is Stonehole Bay, a beautiful combination of pale pink sand, cyan water, and craggy rocks. Elbow Beach, another popular spot, curves around the coast for nearly a mile, and is protected by coral reefs.

Where can I cruise without a passport?

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

It's easy to cruise without a passport in the Caribbean: Just book one of the many closed-loop, round-trip sailings departing from a U.S. port. Most major cruise lines offer sailings that range between three and 15 nights from ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; multiple ports in Florida (including Miami and Fort Lauderdale); Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; and New York City.

Most Caribbean islands participate in the WHTI, but it's always best to check the details specific to the ports of call included in your itinerary. Don't forget that islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are U.S. territories, so visits never require passports for U.S. citizens.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Related: Does it make sense to take a short cruise to Bermuda?

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Skip the passport on three- to five-night Bahamas cruises sailing round-trip on most major cruise lines from the eastern Florida ports of Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and Miami.

A few longer, seven- to 15-night itineraries stop in the Bahamas on their way into the Caribbean. Departures from Bayonne, Manhattan, Baltimore and Charleston will often get you weeklong Bahamas itineraries, as will sailings from Tampa, Galveston and New Orleans.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.
