We were in the 17th row next to the soundboard when Graveyard kicked things off. Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, where heavy metal still sings the blues, they were the only band on the bill that I had not seen before. Joakim Nilsson took the stage at 7:00pm to warm things up with a solo performance before his band joined him for “The Siren” from 2011’s excellent Hisingen Blues. Obviously Graveyard flew here from Sweden, but they might as well have come on a time machine from the 70’s. Every member of the band sports a mustache and straight hair that rides well past the shoulder line. They are heavy as hell, but they don’t shy away from the ballads that are truly more blues than they are metal. Rockers like “Ain’t Fit to Live Here” and “Endless Night” were always followed by slow smokers like “Hard Times Lovin’” and “Slow Motion Countdown”. I’m not sure the early evening crowd really picked up on what they were throwing down, but for my money they were worth the price of admission alone. I was really looking forward to seeing this band and they blew away my expectations. Their shout-out to the locals in Speedwolf just made me like them even more. The set was a stripped down, no-frills, down-and-dirty rock show that had an emotional weight that only the deaf could deny. I’m anxiously waiting for them to come back to Colorado to headline a smaller venue. Maybe their smoke machine will do more damage t -

This is not a reflection of Graveyard. This is a result of Songkick giving me bad info and me still being quite salty.

So, Songkick asked me to review "the show" ... Well, Graveyard played w Black Mountain the night before and then the night after. But, no Graveyard in Richmond,VA. Songkick gave me bad info and I bought tickets months in advance only to learn on 10/2/19 that Graveyard was in fact NOT PLAYING on 10/3/19 in Richmond. I was quite bummed. I do wanna give a shout out to The Broadberry and Eventbrite for refunding the cost of the 3 tickets. I can only hope I get to see these cats one day !

The show exceeded my expectations!

Great performance by the whole band. The sound was not perfect but it was good enough. The length of the show good although you can't just get enough of your favourite group!

Reasonably priced tickets if one booked early.

Musicians were really down to earth and a built good rapport with audience wich responded wonderfully although a bit shy as the show started.

Adorable musicianship by the band and just perfect vocals coming from the graveyard somewhere.

One of the best shows so far!!

Great show, we enjoyed a lot, and the place is well organized, comfortable, equipped with enough easy to use lockers, with good ventilation. The only but painful disappointment was the sound, so badly managed with so good possibilities. At the beginning you barely heard the voice, then something else became too strong - bass or heights. Only closer to the end of the show it became balanced enough so you could hear good both instruments and vocal.

Awesome show, the band is phenomenal and very approachable.

The repertoire was what everyone expected and had an incredible time seeing them! It started on time, the length of the time was adequate. The vibe of the concert was electric and everyone had a great time. It's one of those bands that deliver playing live, Joakim Nilsson's voice was superb. Very happy of being able to see them live.

Amazing gig! Love when bands sound better live than recordings (recordings are great, but live was even better).

I have seen Graveyard several times, never disappointed:)

Will definitely catch them next time they are in Australia.

One of my favorite current bands!

Thanks for the tunes and a great gig Graveyard!!

Super soirée avec Kamchatka, Graveyard et Clutch pour finir. C'est dommage que nos amis suédois de Graveyard n'aient joué que 40 minutes parce que c'était très très bien. Faudra les revoir tous seuls pour en profiter pleinement.

Show was great, the band performed better live than on records.

The place for the show was kind of narrow, so not many people got close to the stage, but the sound was very good. Great show overall, would certainly go again.

Graveyard's 6: inward-looking and melancholy, but a masterclass in psychedelic light and shade

More psychedelic raves from the grave on graveyard's enticingly titled sixth album 6.

Graveyard: 6 cover art

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Yet another band whose plans were derailed by the pandemic. Five years have passed since Graveyard's Peace album , but the minimally titled 6 finds the heavy-rocking Swedes returning in rude health.

Their second album from the line-up of vocalist/guitarist Joakim Nilsson, guitarist Jonatan Ramm, bassist Truls Märck and drummer Oskar Bergenheim, this is a more inward-looking and melancholy Graveyard, world-weary yet able to fire things up when it matters.

Tracks like the ramshackle Twice, Just A Drop and the soulful, ever-building No Way Out are driven and focused, but the dominant feel is raw, mellow and groovy – Bright Lights finds the band drifting lysergically down desert highways, Sad Song easily lives up to its title, and the superb Breathe In Breathe Out features Nilsson channelling the spirit of Mark Lanegan at his dusty, southern gothic best

This album is a masterclass in psychedelic light and shade.

GRAVEYARD  release their brand new album  6  via  Nuclear Blast Records .  6  is easily identifiable as the most striking, original album of  GRAVEYARD ‘s story so far.

A gently lysergic blend of desolate guitars, simmering Hammond and lithe, nimble bass and drums, the Swedes demonstrate a lightness of touch that they have only hinted at in the past. To coincide with the albums release, the band have also revealed a visualiser for the track  ‘Bright Lights’ .

The band comments  “It took its not always so sweet time, but the day for 6 to be released is finally here. Now let it spin”

Watch the visualiser for  ‘Bright Lights’  now below.

GRAVEYARD –  6  Tracklist 1. Godnatt 2. Twice 3. I Follow You 4. Breathe In Breathe Out 5. Sad Song 6. Just A Drop 7. Bright Lights 8. No Way Out 9. Rampant Fields

The album was recorded at  Silence Studios  and  Don Pierre Studios  and was produced by  Don Ahlsterberg , who previously worked with the band on  Graveyard (2007) ,  Hisingen Blues  (2011)  and  Lights Out  (2012) .

As enduring and authentic as an old school leather jacket,  GRAVEYARD  have long since mastered the art of rock’n’roll. Formed in 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden, their shared passion for hard rock, psychedelia and the eternal bedrock of blues marked them out from the start.

Led by vocalist/guitarist  Joakim Nilsson , they opened their account with their now seminal self-titled Tee Pee Recordings debut in 2007, showcasing fiery chemistry and some wildly imaginative songwriting. Subsequently snapped up by the mighty  Nuclear Blast Records , the band’s rise to prominence was swift and irresistible. In 2008 the band released second album  Hisingen Blues  – a critical smash that more than lived up to the hype, it established  GRAVEYARD  as rock’n’roll heavyweights. A thunderous, soul-stirring live band, with subtlety and swagger in equal amounts, they spent the next decade keeping fans of loose-limbed and earthy rock music in a near-constant state of rapture.

From the rootsy clatter of 2012’s  Lights Out  to the magical, muscular grooves of 2018’s  Peace  (taking in the sepia-tinted folk doom of 2015’s  Innocence & Decadence  along the way),  GRAVEYARD  have made some of the most vital and vivid heavy rock of the 21 st  century.

GRAVEYARD is Joakim Nilsson – vocals, guitar Jonatan Ramm – vocals, guitar Truls Mörck – vocals, bass Oskar Bergenheim – drums

Subsequently snapped up by the mighty Nuclear Blast Records, the band’s rise to prominence was swift and irresistible.

In 2008, guitarist Jonatan Ramm expanded the ranks, joining Nilsson , bassist Rikard Edlund and drummer Axel Sjöberg for the recording of second album Hisingen Blues. A critical smash that more than lived up to the hype, it established Graveyard as rock’n’roll heavyweights. A thunderous, soul-stirring live band, with subtlety and swagger in equal amounts, they spent the next decade keeping fans of loose-limbed and earthy rock music in a near-constant state of rapture. From the rootsy clatter of 2012’s Lights Out to the magical, muscular grooves of 2018’s Peace (taking in the sepia-tinted folk doom of 2015’s Innocence & Decadence along the way), Graveyard have made some of the most vital and vivid heavy rock of the 21st century. All eyes and ears are on their next move.

Fast forward to 2023. Graveyard have completed their latest full-length recording and memories of gloomy lockdown are fast fading. This band has evolved yet again, both in terms of personnel and on a profound musical level. Simply titled 6, the band’s sixth studio record may be instantly recognisable as the work of Nilsson and his comrades, but this is a very different kind of Graveyard album. The second record to feature a line-up of Nilsson, Ramm, bassist Truls Mörck and drummer Oskar Bergenheim, it is slower, more soulful, more introspective and a little darker than its predecessors. The new songs reflect the fragile aftermath of a ruinous global sickness, drawing more inspiration than ever from the blues in the process. But despite its melancholy overtones, 6 still sparks and flashes with many moments of riff-driven euphoria. Ultimately, Graveyard are operating on instinct alone.

Armed with their darkest but most accessible album yet, Graveyard have weathered a few years of isolation and frustration and come back braver, bolder and more bluesy than ever. Reinvigorated and surfing on waves of inspiration, they are ready to take their new songs out on the road, where the real magic happens and the rock really rolls. For fans of the truly authentic, 6 is mandatory, medicinal listening. Now watch this thing grow.

graveyard band us tour

Swedish band Graveyard have been steadily collecting a devoted following since the release of their first self-titled album in 2007. With their rich, impressive sound, the band have made a name for themselves as one of the most consistent hard rock bands of recent memory, wowing audiences with their live performances and releasing critically lauded and commercially successful albums.

Their most recent release, Lights Out , was released in 2012 and its emphatic and energetic tone drew even more listeners to the band. They have toured with such high profile bands as Soundgarden, and their first ever American show was selected for special attention by Rolling Stone.

Ahead of their Australian tour, which included a performance at the Golden Plains festival, we spoke to lead singer Joakim Nilson about the band’s sound, their ideal crowd, and the potential joys of being a garbage man…

Joseph Earp : Hi, how are you, and where in the world does our Q&A find you?

Joakim Nilson : Don’t tell anyone but we’re in Sweden working on recording a new album, but don’t tell anyone cos it’s a secret.

JE : Critics tend to call you guys a ‘hard rock’ band. Is that how you see yourselves?

JN : Yes you could say that’s right, much rather have people call us that that something else.

[youtube id=”OnGBa8dVm6k” width=”620″ height=”360″]

JE : What is the song you guys have recorded that you are most proud of and for what reasons are you particularly proud of the track?

JN : I can only talk for myself, but I’d say Slowmotion Countdown. Could be cos it’s our most grown up song.

JE : Your music is notable for its incredible technical precision. I’m interested to know who taught you how to play, or whether you taught yourselves?

JN : Haven’t really thought of us like that, but thanks. Not really how we see ourselves playing, but you can say that we’re pretty much self taught.

JE : You posted some of your early demos on myspace, when you were starting out with the band. Do you feel like social media has changed the musical landscape?

JN : Is this a trick question? Of course it has.

JE : Theoretically, if you couldn’t be a musician, what would you do instead?

JN : Garabage man, and that’s really what I would have wanted to do.

JE : Some of your music videos – particularly Goliath and Endless Night – seem to be grounded in the language of horror cinema. Are you guys horror movie fans?

JN : Not really big fans, but we do like movies.

[youtube id=”k8jqUHYiSl0″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

JE : Do you tend to write lyrics first, or the music?

JN : No set formula, differs from song to song but usually lyrics comes later.

JE : You guys have toured extensively – what is your favorite country to play in and why does it come out on top?

JN : We don’t have favourite countries, it’s usually from city to city, but our kind of music seem to go down and get a great similar response around the world.

JE : What is your ideal crowd like?

JN : Fans of good music, semi drunk, left the cellphone at home and happy afterwords.

JE : Sweden is known for its abundance of talented musicians. Tell us a little bit about the Swedish music scene.

JN : Not much more to say than it’s great, lot’s of bands, steady flow of great bands that sets example for younger people to start their own band.

JE : You toured with Soundgarden in 2013. Tell us a little bit about that tour and the experiences you took away from those shows.

JN : It was a great experience, great shows with a band that we have enjoyed listening to in the past. Both their crew and band were really nice people and we’d gladly do it again.

JE : The album artwork for your first self-titled album is incredible: can you tell us a bit about where it came from and do you involve yourselves in the creative process when it comes to the artwork to your releases?

JN : The first album cover was painted by a friend of ours that sadly has passed away, it fits the first album perfectly and we’re really happy with it. We don’t really take part in the creative process, we just turn down stuff that we don’t see fit.

JE : What are the biggest influences on your music?

JN : To sum things up I’d say, or I’d have to say Black Sabbath, Strebers, Big Business  & Fleetwood Mac.

JE : What does your backstage rider look like? Any frequent requests like blue M&M’s or black towels only?

JN : Our rider is pretty straight up what you need to make it through a day on the road. Drinks, snacks, beer and buns.

[youtube id=”6HmMy2ubC7E” width=”620″ height=”360″]

JE : We read that you have your own brand of beer in Sweden. Can you tell us a little about this venture and what inspired you to get into this?

JN : The beer is sold out, and it was a fun thing to be involved in, but we’re not working with it anymore.

JE : Tell me something you have never told an interviewer before.

JN : There will be a new Graveyard album next year.

JE : You are heading to Australia soon to play Golden Plains Festival and a few shows around the country. What can fans down under expect from a Graveyard show?

JN : Nothing more nothing less than a great ol time with the boys in Graveyard, happy to come back and looking forward to see all our Australian fans again.

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

U.S. Army Band tour stops at Springfield Symphony Hall

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The United States Army Band continued their annual tour by making a stop in Springfield Saturday.

The Army Band performed at Springfield Symphony Hall Saturday afternoon. The band is directed by Lieutenant Colonel Domingos Robinson and Major Richard Winkels.

The president of MGM Springfield, one of the concert’s sponsors, explained to 22News why this concert is important for the city.

“It’s important to pay homage to our military and the great service they give to our country,” said Louis Theros. “Our city really should see that on a regular basis to know that there are people out there defending our freedoms and being able to hear the musicians that are a part of that.”

The Army Band performs both in the United States and around the world. They are set to play in Switzerland and Finland this summer.

Dickey Betts, Fiery Guitarist With Allman Brothers Band, Dies at 80

He traded licks with Duane Allman and proved to be a worthy sparring partner. He also wrote, and sang, the band’s biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man.”

Dickey Betts, a man with longish brown hair and a mustache, plays an electric guitar. He wears a brown leather jacket and has an intense look on his face.

By Alex Williams

Dickey Betts, a honky-tonk hell raiser who, as a guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, traded fiery licks with Duane Allman in the band’s early-1970s heyday, and who went on to write some of the band’s most indelible songs, including its biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man,” died on Thursday at his home in Osprey, Fla. He was 80.

His death was announced on social media by his family. His manager David Spero said in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine that the cause was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Despite not being an actual Allman brother — the band, founded in 1969, was led by Duane Allman, who achieved guitar-god status before he died in a motorcycle accident at 24, and Gregg Allman , the lead vocalist, who got an added flash of the limelight in 1975 when he married Cher — Mr. Betts was a guiding force in the group for decades and central to the sound that came to define Southern rock.

Although pigeonholed by some fans in the band’s early days as its “other” guitarist, Mr. Betts, whose solos seemed at times to scorch the fretboard of his Gibson Les Paul, proved a worthy sparring partner to Duane Allman, serving as a co-lead guitarist, rather than as a sidekick.

With his chiseled features, Wild West mustache and gunfighter demeanor, Mr. Betts certainly looked the part of the star. And he played like one. Nowhere was that more apparent than on the band’s landmark 1971 live double album, “At Fillmore East,” which was filled with expansive jams and showcased the intricate interplay between Mr. Betts and Mr. Allman. It sold more than a million copies.

“The second half of ‘At Fillmore East’ is as vivid and exhilarating as recorded rock has ever been,” Grayson Haver Currin of Pitchfork wrote in a 2022 appraisal.

A centerpiece of the album was “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” a haunting, jazz-influenced instrumental written by Mr. Betts whose title was taken from a headstone at a graveyard in the band’s hometown, Macon, Ga. That track’s “textural interplay,” Mr. Currin continued, “resembles Miles Davis’s then-new electric bands, organ and guitar oozing into one another like melting butter and chocolate.”

“Duane and I had an understanding , like an old soul kind of understanding of let’s play together,” Mr. Betts said in a 2020 interview with The Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida. “Duane would say, ‘Man, I get so jealous of you sometimes when you burn off and I have to follow it,’ and we would joke about it. So that’s kind of Duane and mine’s relationship. It was a real understanding. Like, ‘Come on, this is a hell of a band, let’s not hot dog it up.’”

Mr. Allman made his feelings about his bandmate clear. “I’m the famous guitar player,” he once said, “but Dickey is the good one.”

That brilliant guitar dialogue ended in Macon on Oct. 29, 1971, when Mr. Allman lost control of his motorcycle after swerving to miss a truck and died of extensive internal injuries sustained in the crash ( Berry Oakley , the band’s bassist, was killed a year later in a motorcycle accident just a few blocks from the site).

Mr. Betts took over as the band’s effective leader and featured guitarist when the Allman Brothers Band regrouped to complete its next album, “Eat a Peach.” Released in 1972, it was critically acclaimed and vaulted to No. 4 on the Billboard charts. Among the album’s most memorable tracks was Mr. Betts’s sunny country-inflected number “Blue Sky,” which came to be regarded as a rock classic.

The band reached new commercial heights with its follow-up the next year, “Brothers & Sisters,” which contained two of Mr. Betts’s signature songs: “Ramblin’ Man,” which rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the upbeat instrumental “Jessica.”

“Ramblin’ Man,” which, like all his signature songs, Mr. Betts sang, is a carefree tale of an unfettered life on the open road. “I guess the song is more or less autobiographical ,” he said in a 1973 interview with the future movie director Cameron Crowe, who was then a writer for Rolling Stone. “Not right down to the point, but overall it’s a pretty true song. There’s a lot of things I wish I could say in my songs that I can’t.”

He apparently made an impression on Mr. Crowe. With his horseshoe mustache and bad-boy swagger, he became the inspiration for Billy Crudup’s rock-star character in Mr. Crowe’s quasi-autobiographical 2000 film, “Almost Famous.” As Mr. Crowe told Rolling Stone in 2017: “Dickey seemed like a quiet guy with a huge amount of soul , possible danger and playful recklessness behind his eyes. He was a huge presence.”

Forrest Richard Betts was born on Dec. 12, 1943, in West Palm Beach, Fla., one of three children of Harold and Sarah Betts. Growing up on the Gulf Coast in Bradenton, near Tampa, he learned an early appreciation of music from his father, a fiddler, and started playing ukulele at 5.

He graduated to guitar and formed his own band in his teens. In 1967, he formed another band, the Second Coming, with Mr. Oakley. They eventually found themselves jamming with Duane Allman, who invited them to join his new band.

After the triumph of “Brothers & Sisters,” which topped the Billboard 200 for five weeks in 1973, the Allman Brothers Band started to fray. Gregg Allman started a side solo career, as did Mr. Betts, who released an album, “Highway Call,” under the name Richard Betts in 1974.

Along the way, the band’s outsize drug and alcohol use was becoming an increasing problem, as was the internal pressures that came with success. The band splintered in 1976 after Gregg Allman testified against his personal road manager in a federal drug case ; Mr. Betts vowed never to work with Mr. Allman again.

Still, he did. Although Mr. Betts continued with a side venture, Dickey Betts & Great Southern, in 1979 the Allman Brothers Band released a comeback album, “Enlightened Rogues,” reviving the twin-guitar approach by adding a new guitarist, Dan Toler; the band would continue to tour and record, despite lengthy hiatuses, until 2000. That year, the group fired Mr. Betts, citing “creative differences ” — while also alluding to continuing struggles with substance abuse, which he denied.

By that point Mr. Betts had been through plenty of struggles with drugs and alcohol, as well as multiple arrests, including a much-publicized incident in 1996, in which he was accused of aiming a .44 Magnum handgun at his wife, Donna, during a quarrel over his drug use and charged with aggravated domestic assault. The charges were dropped after he agreed to check into a rehab facility.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Betts’s survivors include his daughters, Kimberly, Christy and Jessica Betts, as well as his son, Duane Betts, who made appearances with the Allman Brothers Band in the 1990s and later joined Great Southern.

Despite undergoing brain surgery in 2018 after a fall at home, Mr. Betts released live albums with his outfit the Dickey Betts Band in both 2018 and 2019.

He received notable recognition when Bob Dylan referenced him in “Murder Most Foul,” Mr. Dylan’s 2020 opus about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It contains the line “Play Oscar Peterson, play Stan Getz/Play ‘Blue Sky,’ play Dickey Betts.”

When friends called him about the shout-out, Mr. Betts was deeply honored, he said in a recent interview , but also embarrassed. “I would say, ‘Well, he just used me because it rhymes with Getz.’”
