The luxury honeymoon of our dreams!…

We used Guru travel to book our honeymoon after finding them on Facebook. We initially saw an advert for a trip to the dominican republic from London, however we were travelling from Scotland and were looking for a few days in New York. Paul, Emily and the team were fantastic and tailored a fantastic trip that was perfect for us! Communication was fantastic throughout and they were quickly on top of any query we had. The accommodation and service in both destinations was top class and we were made to feel very special. We would 100% book with Guru again and recommend them to anyone looking for a hassle free luxury vacation. Thanks again!

Good Service with Guru Again.

This is the second time that I have used Guru Travel following a recommendation from a friend. Paul has always responded swiftly to my initial email enquiry and provided good options and service. Paul and Emily have then answered any further questions after booking a holiday promptly and ensured that I am aware of any travel requirements for the holiday destination. I am highly likely to use them again in the future.

Excellent team to deal with!

We booked with Guru for Singapore and the Maldives for our honeymoon. We found the service and all information provided to be excellent. The planning and booking process was seamless. We hadn’t used Guru before but will be again. There was an issue with airport transfers but they are working hard to resolve this, after the event, which was not in their control. A good example of after-sales care. The whole trip was wonderful and Paul sent lots of options for us to choose from. Our stay at Varu by Atmosphere in the Maldives was paradise. Highly recommend.

Nothing is too much trouble. You are their most important person.

We have been booking our holidays with Guru Travel Group for the last 7 years. They are Award Winning Sandals Resort specialists in the Caribbean. Their knowledge, experience and service is exceptional. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They will ensure your holiday is perfect from start to finish. We have booked holidays to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Indian Ocean resorts and also numerous cruises. We have visited many of Sandals Resorts in the Caribbean. We often bump into other Guru Travel clients when we are at Sandals!! Everyone we have met have always spoken very highly of them. We are off to Orlando, Florida shortly on a 4 week luxury break. Their knowledge of the best hotels is excellent particularly if you want something special like my wife’s birthday. Thank you Emily and Paul at Guru Travel.

Guru Travel - Fab!

Guru Travel are a great company to deal with. We have just completed our second holiday that was booked with them and will definitely be using them again in the future. We had a lot of troubles with our first booking which was moved several times due to Covid but Emily & Paul were great, nothing was too much trouble.

First Class Service ⭐️

We have been booking with Guru since 2016 and always had excellent service. We have visited much of the Indian Ocean, and many of the Sandals resorts in the Caribbean. We had a holiday to Turks and Caicos booked for March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, Paul and Emily put us at complete ease in all the madness, kept in regular contact and smoothly reorganised for us. I have no hesitation at all in recommending Guru travel and would always book with them. A big THANK YOU for all the wonderful holidays and look forward to many more.

5 star service will use again and again!

I could not recommend this company enough!! We had the most amazing honeymoon was perfect from start to finish! This company couldn’t do enough for us when booking up and they were so patient with trying to get us the best available options which checking different things for us which I can only imagine was time consuming! The communication was spot on and they were always there to answer questions/give us an insight into where we were staying due to having stayed there before so that was good! We will definitely be using this company again for future bookings and I can’t wait!! Thanks again so much for your service and thank you for our lovely message in our honeymoon suite!

Recently booked a holiday to sandals…

Recently booked a holiday to sandals Barbados through guru travel. It was so easy and hassle free to book and all the information is sent over to you. We had extra special upgrades included on our holiday and after meeting and speaking to other guests on our holiday no one could believe what a good deal we got compared to what they had paid. I will definitely be using for all my future bookings and will recommend to all my family and friends.

Guru Travel - absolutely awesome

If I could give Guru travel 10 stars, I would. I cannot fault the service at all and highly recommend everyone to use them. Paul and Emily provide a truly personal service, and will not be beaten on price. I would not book another holiday with anybody else apart from them. We have booked numerous Sandals holidays with them, we’ve been to Australia, Fiji, and the Maldives, and have never had a bad trip. The fact the Paul and Emily are so well traveled, and have such a great reputation with Sandals, means that you get a really brilliant holiday and if you don’t, you just need to let them know whilst you’re still on site and they will contact the resort for you. That’s service!

Excellent Service

Paul and Emily have arranged three holidays for us so far. One was booked before lockdown and had to be amended a few times. The service they gave was excellent and always replied to my queries quickly. My last holiday was in the Maldives in November 2022. Again, superb service.

Date of experience : November 18, 2022

Excellent Travel Company

We always use Guru to arrange our Caribbean holidays. They are extremely helpful and very knowledgable. They will help with any request and are quick to deal with all queries. Would definitely recommend.

Date of experience : February 10, 2023

Exceptional customer service

We have booked our upcoming May holiday to the Caribbean with Guru travel. The service we have received from enquiring through to the booking has been exceptional. Emily & Paul clearly put the customer experience first. Would highly recommend.

Date of experience : February 18, 2023

Better than a 5 star service

Having decided we wanted a tailor made trip to Thailand I knew there was only one travel company that I would trust and Guru Travel did not disappoint. Having used them before for many Caribbean holidays this was the first time we had ventured East. Paul was so knowledgable and gave us loads of ideas. Once we had settled on our plans he provided us with accommodation choices and then organised all our flights and private transfers. Any time I had a question, the team responded quickly and were so helpful. They pride themselves on their customer service and quite rightly so. Nothing was too much trouble. I can’t praise Paul and Emily enough. Thank you again for helping us have such a fantastic time.

Date of experience : March 02, 2023

We have used Guru Travel multiple times…

We have used Guru Travel multiple times to book our Sandals holidays. As they’re certified Sandals experts they’re always able to get us the best deal and price! And Paul is always so kind and helpful! Highly recommend!

The ULTIMATE Singapore Travel Guide

A vibrant, bustling city, Singapore combines all the charm of South-East Asia with the wonder of the modern world. One minute you’re wandering past high-end storefronts on Orchard Road and the next, you’re tucking into the island’s very best food, elbow to elbow with locals at a Hawker Centre. From unique cultural experiences and a fascinating history to unbelievably good food and modern-day fun, there’s a lot to see, do and eat in Singapore . A popular transit hub, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself transiting through this eclectic country at one point or another. Whether it’s a stopover or a longer stay, Singapore has a lot to offer travellers. To help you #TravelWell here’s our ultimate guide to Singapore!

Where is Singapore?

You’ll find Singapore located just off the tip of the Malay Peninsula , about one degree north of the equator. It is comprised of one main island with a number of smaller islets and islands forming part of the country too. Established as a trading post of the British Empire in 1819, Singapore has long been a port for travellers and that unique history continues today as more than 65.6 million passengers pass through Changi Airport each year.

How to get to Singapore

To get there we fly direct from Australia to Singapore with Singapore Airlines with a flight time of around 8 hours. Owing to its central location there are many airlines with flights to Singapore but, for us, Singapore Airlines is always our first choice. We’ve experienced Singapore Airlines economy, premium economy and business class and have found, no matter where you sit on the plane, the service is always the same! There’s a consistent approach to customer service that makes you feel like your needs matter. The staff are always so welcoming, friendly, patient, kind and attentive. There’s genuine pride in working for the airline, which flows through into the customer service we, as guests, receive.

guru travel singapore

In addition, we find the seats are very comfortable, there’s always a great selection of entertainment (featuring tv shows and movies you actually want to watch!) and the food is delicious too. They offer a great range of meals for dietary requirements (note: if you love Indian cuisine you should try the Indian vegetarian meals, they’re fantastic). A full-service airline, our luggage and seat selection are included in our fare, which makes the experience all the more stress-free. If you’re planning a trip and looking for an airline recommendation we highly recommend Singapore Airlines and fly with them every chance we get.

Is Singapore a safe destination for travellers?

Singapore is renowned for being a safe destination for residents and travellers alike. As someone who has lived in Singapore and travelled there repeatedly, I have never had an experience that has made me feel unsafe in any way. When we’re in Singapore we have no hesitations about withdrawing cash from an ATM late at night or wandering around with our cameras out. With that said, it’s always important to be mindful wherever you travel in the world so we follow the same basic safety principles as always. We’re mindful to keep our belongings where we can see them at all times and use our hotel room safe to store valuable items.

guru travel singapore

Is Singapore a budget-friendly destination?

If I had never lived in Singapore I would have been of the opinion it is an expensive destination. This is due to the cost of accommodation, alcohol, some experiences and restaurants as well as Singapore’s famous high-end shopping scene. But there are many layers to Singapore and, in my opinion, some of the best experiences are the least expensive. Instead of eating at restaurants for every meal try eating at Hawker Centres dotted across the island. Here, you can feast like a King for under SG$10!

guru travel singapore

The best food on the island is found in Hawker Centres so not only will you save money, you’ll be trying authentic local cuisine. The alcohol tax means booze prices are high so try taking advantage of your hotel’s club lounge benefits as they usually include two or three-hour-long happy hours where drinks are free! In place of catching taxis or ride-shares around the island, get yourself an EZ-Link Card and catch the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) instead. The train system in Singapore is incredibly easy to figure out and use. It’s also very safe, clean and affordable.

10 Must-know tips for visiting Singapore

Here are a few things you really need to know before you travel to Singapore:

guru travel singapore

  • The local currency is the Singapore Dollar (SG$) and no other currency is accepted (i.e. US Dollars). Downloading a free currency conversion app that works offline, like  XE Currency , will come in very useful!
  • Singapore has four official languages; English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil but there’s a fifth unofficial language; Singlish! This unique hybrid of English and local dialect influences is a beloved part of Singapore. When talking to locals the speed at which they talk may make it seem as though they aren’t speaking English but listen closely and your ears will adapt. Before you know it, you’ll be adding ‘lah’ and ‘ah/uh’ to your sentences, calling people Aunty and Uncle and clipping your sentences (it kinda reminds me of that episode of The Office where Kevin starts cutting out unnecessary words!).
  • While Singapore’s laws are very strict, I often hear people express worry they’ll be arrested for things like accidentally dropping a food wrapper. Don’t worry, it’s not like that! If you do litter, just pick it up and put it in the trash.
  • The heat and humidity in Singapore can be very intense, especially if you aren’t used to it or are coming from a cold climate. Trust me, you don’t want to underestimate it. To avoid heatstroke and exhaustion you may want to plan to do your sightseeing in the mornings and afternoon/evenings, outside of the hottest parts of the day. Use sun protective gear (I always carry an umbrella to shade me), rest often, and drink lots of water.
  • While cards are widely accepted, you’ll want to make sure you have cash on you if you’re visiting Hawker Centres as it’s unlikely they’ll take your card for payment.

guru travel singapore

  • There’s a large expat community in Singapore, which makes it even more multicultural than it already was to begin with! As a result, you’ll find a broad range of restaurants and bars catering to just about every nationality you could think of. It also means it’s a great place to meet people from all over the world and make new friends.
  • With so many expats living in Singapore and many business deals going down over drinks, Singapore’s nightlife scene is kind of epic! So, if you do love to party, you’re in for a real treat.
  • While Singapore is renowned for it’s super safe, squeaky-clean image, there is a ‘red-light district,’ in Geylang. Honestly, there are some pretty great restaurants there and I’ve never had a problem when I’ve visited! But, if you are keen to see Singapore’s ‘other side,’ head there after dark.
  • You can easily visit Malaysia by catching the bus, walking or driving a car across the border. We used to do this a lot when I was living there, heading over to Johor Bahru for a day of shopping and great Malaysian food. Just beware, while the border control staff in Singapore are all above board, we have had situations where staff on the Malay side of the border sought bribes to allow us to enter or leave.
  • Tipping isn’t required in Singapore, though you’re welcome to if you would like to, of course

The best time to visit Singapore

Singapore is a great destination year-round. I often read articles talking about the different seasons and, yes, there are technically different seasons but there’s not really going to be a time to visit that will allow you to escape the heat altogether. Remember, earlier, when you read that bit about it being one degree north of the equator?! Yeah, that ain’t changing which means the heat ain’t changing either. With that in mind, planning a visit around January to March will see you coinciding with some of the island’s festivals like Chinese New Year and Holi. Singapore also comes alive from November to December with Deepavali (the festival of lights) and some absolutely epic Christmas and New Year celebrations!

guru travel singapore

How to get around in Singapore

In Australia, taxis are so expensive we rarely use them. In Singapore, they’re really well-priced which makes catching taxis around the island a viable transport option. Also, you’re very unlikely to get ripped off in a tourist scam as Singaporean taxi drivers run a fare meter. Make sure when you get in, the meter is started, just as a precaution. It’s also important to bear in mind that torrential afternoon downpours are common in the rainy months, coinciding perfectly with peak hours. This creates a huge demand for taxis which can make it virtually impossible to get one so, if this happens, public transport is a better option.

guru travel singapore

While Uber has been outlawed, you can use ‘Grab’ which is essentially the same thing. Just make sure you download the app and register an account before you leave home as you’ll need to verify your mobile number and, if you don’t’ have an international sim, won’t be able to do it once you arrive. The easiest and most affordable way to get around Singapore as a tourist has to be by public transport. Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is incredibly well organised, very clean, reliable, and easy to navigate. Catch the bus or train around the island paying for tickets as you go or pick up an EZ-Link card which can be topped up with credit to make it even easier!

guru travel singapore

Where to stay in Singapore

Given the size of the island and how easy it is to get around, you can’t really go wrong when choosing an accommodation spot. While it may be tempting to book a hotel right on Orchard Road, I would only recommend that location if you’re really into shopping. Otherwise, I’d recommend spots around the Downtown area. Ideally, you want to find a place right above or very close to an MRT station. Look for spots near City Hall, Esplanade, Raffles Place, Telok Ayer and Downtown MRT stations. Find great Singapore hotels here!

guru travel singapore

Swissôtel The Stamford

This hotel truly has it all and is our favourite place to stay in Singapore! Swissôtel The Stamford is perfectly located in-between two MRT stations, with one being directly below the hotel. There’s plenty of great food options close by, within easy walking distance and you could also do a lot of our exploring on foot, owing to its great location. Our favourite things about the hotel have to be the incredible views over the city, out to the water and beyond as well as the incredibly luxurious, modern rooms. Find Swissôtel The Stamford here and read my full review of it here.

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport

We often find ourselves transiting through Singapore, with one or two days layover. In those instances, we love staying at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport. It only takes a few minutes to walk from baggage collection to the hotel reception and, before you know it, you’ve had a shower and are all cosied up in bed, relaxing. The rooms here are very spacious and well fitted out, with everything you could possibly need to have a great stay. Best of all, it’s located a short walk from Jewel at Changi Airport, has an awesome pool and an epic club lounge! We love visiting time and time again to reconnect with Raymond, the amazing Club Lounge manager who never forgets us. Find Crowne Plaza Changi Airport here.

If you love boutique hotel experiences you should definitely check out Amoy Hotel. Located in Singapore’s Central Business District, the Telok Ayer MRT is right outside the hotel’s unique temple entry-way. Inside the decor throws back to Singapore’s spice trade routes, with dark wood, vintage pieces, exposed brick, warm lighting and split-level rooms. With plenty of great food closeby, a distinct heritage feel and a convenient, central location, Amoy is a great base for your Singapore adventures. Find Amoy Hotel here.

15 Foods you must try in Singapore

Eating is pretty much a national pastime in Singapore! Honestly, I have to recommend that you eat as much food as possible, sampling from the broad range of cuisines on offer across the island. If you went to Singapore and didn’t stuff yourself… did you really do it right? I think not. Here are my tips on must-try food in Singapore. It’s important to note the very best food goes down at Hawker Centres so nearly all of these recommendations can be found at one of the many great Hawker Centres across the island, making them very budget-friendly.

guru travel singapore

  • Start your day the traditional way with Kaya Toast , made from a sweet, coconut jam, and delicious silk-stocking tea or coffee
  • Dive mouth-first into delicious dumplings either from a Hawker Centre or spots like Din Tai Fung , Mouth or 126 Eating House
  • If you love noodles, be sure to sample Char Kway Teow , a delicious combination of flat rice noodles, dark soy sauce, egg, seafood/sausage and more
  • You absolutely must try fried carrot cake , one of my favourite Singaporean dishes! Interestingly, it is not  a cake and does  not  contain any carrot!
  • The perfect mix between fresh, spicy and sweet, Rojak is a tropical fruit and vegetable salad perfect for something light or as a vegetarian option

guru travel singapore

  • You cannot visit Singapore without trying Hainanese Chicken Rice at least once! It’s pretty much the national dish and they love it so much they made a whole Romeo and Juliet inspired movie about it.
  • One of my all-time favourite things to eat in Singapore (and the world) is Masala Dosa . In my opinion, the very best one is from Komala Villas in Little India .
  • Speaking of Little India, if you love curry be sure to head to the Banana Leaf Apolo for truly delicious curry and Indian fare.
  • Another of my all-time favourite things to eat in life is Roti Prata , a crispy, delicious flatbread cooked over a grill and served with dipping curry.
  • If you love chicken wings keep your eyes peeled for crispy, golden BBQ chicken wings or ‘teddy-bear wings’ found at Hawker Centres. The chilli they serve them with will blow your mind!

guru travel singapore

  • Vegetarians and vegans will love sampling clay hotpot, which includes a mouth-wateringly good veggie gravy and loads of yummy veg and tofu too! They also have meat options, of course, for the carnivores.
  • Head to Lau Pa Sat after dark and eat your way through the iconic ‘Satay Street’ where you can sample some of the islands very best satay, accompanied perfectly by gooey peanut satay sauce. Y-E-S!
  • Singapore is famous for its incredible Chilli Crab. You’ll definitely get covered in crab juice but it’s worth it to sample the BBQ’d perfection and spices!
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, BBQ Stingray is a local delight that will expand your horizons and it tastes absolutely amazing.
  • It’s so hot in Singapore that ice creams and rich desserts don’t usually sit too well. Instead, try ice kachang! It’s essentially shaved ice topped with syrup, condensed milk, jelly, fruits and some pretty unique toppings like red kidney beans and even corn. Don’t knock it till you try it!

What to pack for a trip to Singapore

Here’s what you need to pack for a trip to Singapore:

guru travel singapore

  • Overall, you’ll want to pack clothing that is breathable. For Matt, this is usually shorts and a sweat-wicking t-shirt. For me, it’s usually summer dresses, cotton skirts and linen tops. It’s going to be hot and humid so make sure your clothing is going to allow your skin to breathe and keep you as cool as possible.
  • I always recommend wearing high SPF sunscreen and a hat if you’re out exploring during the day
  • In terms of footwear, I find we’re on our feet a lot in Singapore so we prefer to wear comfortable sneakers or breathable sandals
  • Make sure you pack your swimmers so you can take advantage of the hotel pool!
  • If you’re planning on dining out at nice restaurants, you’ll want to bring a few special outfits with you. Singapore is very fashion-forward so don’t be afraid to get all glammed up for a special dinner
  • You will absolutely need a good quality, strong deodorant, especially if you typically sweat a lot as-is
  • Surprisingly, I always recommend packing a really warm jumper or jacket . You see, to compensate for the heat, shopping malls, hotels etc. will have the air conditioning set to ‘freeze’ and you can quickly become very cold.
  • Read our full guide on what to pack for a trip to Singapore here.

WELCOME TO OUR SINGAPORE TRAVEL GUIDE

Singapore is an incredible melting pot of cultures, modernization and luxury. Thanks to one of the world’s most efficient transportation system, exploring this small city-state is incredible easy. Travelers can explore the world renowned hawker markets, temples, Gardens by the Bay and grab a drink at the famed rooftop bars all before lunch.

Singapore is an architectural dream, with towering buildings that seem to defy all architectural possibilities. We spent an entire day just wandering around the ultra-clean streets, admiring the beautiful buildings. You can spend 2 days in Singapore, or a week, and take advantage of every neighborhood. Time permitting, don’t skip Sentosa Island.

Things to See and Do in Singapore

Warehouse Hotel Singapore

“Boutique hotels of Singapore”

Singapore Marina Bay Sands

``Marina Bay Sands”

What to know.

Singapore offers a tremendous number of luxury hotels, ranging from boutique brands to towering modern mega-hotels. Singapore has some of the most incredible luxury properties that we have personally experienced and they do come at a steep price. Given its bustling business and leisure scene, there really is not cheap time to stay at one of the best hotels in Singapore.

Hotels like the Parkroyal on Pickering offer guests the spectacular hanging gardens and sky pools, while the boutique properties, like The Warehouse Hotel, provide guests with a sexy small-hotel feel. Brands like Marriott and Hyatt are offering rooms at a steeper points rate, but may be just the thing you need to get yourself a great stay. The Andaz in Singapore, for example, is going for 25,000 points per night for the $450-500 USD room.

Taxis are everywhere, as is the public transportation system. Taxis are more expensive than some of the other Asian countries like Hong Kong, but they are also incredible safe and clean. In general, Singapore is clean, respectful and organized. The Metro (MRT), is cheap, ranging from $.50 to $2.00 depending on where you’re going. Travelers can move from neighborhood to neighborhood using the Metro and walk just about anywhere once you get off.

Singapore offers world-class dining experiences, even down to stalls at the Hawker Centers. Two stalls at Singapore’s famous markets have earned Michelin stars, including the Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle Stall and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle. Don’t expect anything fancy, but the food is exceptional.

How to find the best flight deal for your vacation.

Organizing a trip is complicated! You have to think about hotels, getting around, activities, and most importantly, flights. Here are some tips for finding a great deal!

Typical costs

As far as southeast Asia goes, Singapore is expensive. Food, drinks and shopping are on the higher side of the spectrum. If you’re accustomed to the $.25 USD fried rice, you won’t find it here. Expect to pay upwards of $10 for the same plate of food.

Hotels are also on the pricier side. Our recommendation is to save up your points, because they can be a great value in this pricey city. Not to mention, hotels in Singapore have incredible facilities, such as sky pools and world-class fitness centers.

Suggested daily budget – Typical food & beverage costs range depending on how high-end the hotel brand is, but we typically budget $300 per day for food & alcohol, allowing us the flexibility to eat the hotel or nearby. Transfers to & from the hotel to the airport range as well, but we typically budget $30-40. Keep in mind that Singapore is on the more expensive side and you don’t want to miss out on the incredible experiences, so budget for a little extra breathing room.

When to Travel Singapore Seasons

Singapore is a great, year-round destination. However, November-January, aka part of high season happens to fall in line with monsoon season. The highest prices will be between November-June, while travelers will find Singapore a tad quieter in June-October with less severe weather.

How to plan your trip

Planning a trip to Singapore can be daunting. First, we recommend establishing a daily budget for hotels and F&B. This will help you establish where you want to stay. Many hotels offer free breakfast, so that’s a bonus.

Singapore is a small city-state, so you can’t go wrong with location. Staying near Marina Bay or Clarke Quay is a safe bet as it’s close to all the action. Be sure to consider that much of the activity in Singapore happens a night. While it may be a fight with jetlag, we recommend staying up late and heading to the Hawker Centers and late night markets for shopping.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia’s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. The country is highly urbanised with very little primary rainforest remaining, although more land is being created for development through land reclamation.

Emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi: Turbulence on flight kills 1

30 people injured, 7 critically, after Singapore Airlines flight encounters ‘severe turbulence’ over Irrawaddy Basin

A Singapore Airlines flight that made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Tuesday had fallen into an air pocket before it encountered turbulence, with one man killed and seven people critically injured on board, a senior airport official said.

A 73-year-old British man died during the incident, likely due to a heart attack, while head injuries were sustained among seven people critically injured, said Suvarnabhumi general manager Kittipong Kittikachorn. One crew member was admitted to hospital, he added.

The plane “looks okay from the outside but inside it’s a mess”, he said.

Flight SQ321 was en route from London to Singapore when it encountered “sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000 feet about 10 hours after departure”, Singapore Airlines (SIA) said in a statement on its Facebook page.

“The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the aircraft to Bangkok, and landed at 1545hrs local time.

“We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.”

In an update posted at 7.50pm the carrier said: “18 individuals have been hospitalised. Another 12 are being treated in hospitals. The remaining passengers and crew are being examined and given treatment, where necessary, at Suvarnabhumi International Airport.”

The nationalities and injuries of those in hospital were not specified in the update.

There were no Thai passengers on the flight, according to information released on Tuesday night by the airline. It said the nationalities of the passengers were as follows: 56 from Australia, 2 from Canada, 1 from Germany, 3 from India, 2 from Indonesia, 1 from Iceland, 4 from Ireland, 1 from Israel, 16 from Malaysia, 2 from Myanmar, 23 from New Zealand, 5 from the Philippines, 41 from Singapore, 1 from South Korea, 2 from Spain, 47 from the UK and 4 from the United States.

According to Flight Aware data, Flight SQ321 departed London Heathrow at 10.38pm local time on Monday and landed at Bangkok’s main international airport at 3.45pm.

Airports of Thailand, the operator of Suvarnabhumi, said it put its emergency protocol into action after flight controllers received a request from the pilot of the SIA plane.

More than 10 ambulances were mobilised to help transport injured passengers from the airport to Samitivej Hospital, according to local media reports.

Data on Flight Radar 24, a website that compiles public information about flights, appears to show that about 11 hours after it departed London, the plane went from cruising at 37,000 feet to roughly 31,000 feet in only a few minutes.

Little warning

There was little warning of the chaos that was about to be unleashed onboard, passenger Dzafran Azmir said.

With around three hours left on the journey from London to Singapore, the Malaysian student got the uneasy feeling that the plane was tilting upwards and beginning to shake.

The 28-year-old braced himself and checked he had his seatbelt on. He did. Many of the other passengers did not, he told Reuters.

“Suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing a seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling, some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it,” Azmir said.

“People dropped to the ground, my phone flew out of my hand and went a couple of aisles to the side, people’s shoes flung about,” he added.

“The crew and people inside lavatories were hurt the most because we discovered people just on the ground not able to get up. There were a lot of spinal and head injuries,” Azmir said.

The captain informed passengers they would be making an emergency landing in Bangkok.

Once the plane was on the tarmac, nurses and rescue workers came in to check on the injured. “I don’t think they anticipated how bad it was,” Azmir said.

Ambulances later arrived and Azmir said he saw at least eight people on stretchers being pulled out of the emergency exits. It took 90 minutes to evacuate the plane, he said.

Fatalities are extremely rare in incidents of turbulence, especially at cruising altitudes. The airline has not yet provided details of the accident. Carriers routinely caution passengers to keep their seat belts fastened even when the seat belt sign has been switched off, as unforeseen turbulence may occur.

“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. We deeply apologise for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight. We are providing all necessary assistance during this difficult time,” the airline said.

“We are working with our colleagues and the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary assistance. A Singapore Airlines team is on the way to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed.”

Investigators from Singapore were en route to Bangkok, the government of the city-state said.

“The Transport Safety Investigation Bureau is in touch with its Thai counterparts and will be deploying investigators to Bangkok,” the transport ministry said in a statement.

The aircraft operating flight SQ321 was 16 years old, and is one 23 Boeing 777-300ER jets in the SIA fleet.

The last time fatalities occurred on Singapore Airlines was in October 2000 when a plane crashed on a closed runway during takeoff in Taiwan and 83 people died.

The carrier has had 7 accidents in its history, according to records by the Aviation Safety Network.

The airline has set up a hotline for relatives seeking information at +65-6542-3311.

PropertyGuru Q1 loss narrows to $6.3 million

guru travel singapore

SINGAPORE - Online property portal PropertyGuru posted a narrower net loss of $6.3 million for the first quarter ended March, compared with a $10.2 million net loss in the same period in 2023.

The decrease comes after the New York Stock Exchange-listed real estate platform made positive earnings in the previous two sequential quarters.

Revenue for the quarter rose 11.9 per cent to $36.5 million, from $32.6 million a year ago, on the back of strong growth in the Singapore marketplace segment, based on PropertyGuru’s financials released on May 21.

Basic loss per share for the period stood at four cents, compared with six cents of loss per share in the year-ago period.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) for the quarter rose to $4.5 million from $220,000 in the first quarter of 2023.

Fintech and data services revenue was 3 per cent down at $1 million in the first quarter, while marketplaces revenue increased 13 per cent on the year to $35 million as strong results in Singapore offset a slower recovery in Vietnam and Malaysia.

Singapore marketplaces revenue increased 25 per cent to $23.5 million, driven by growth in both the number of agents and the average revenue per agent.

Malaysia marketplaces revenue was $6.7 million, compared with $6.8 million in the first quarter of 2023, as property pricing remains elevated relative to consumer expectations, shifting the focus to rental listings in the near term, said PropertyGuru.

Mr Hari Krishnan, chief executive officer and managing director of PropertyGuru, noted that despite near-term challenges, the company expects a positive outlook for the Malaysian market on a reviving property-buying sentiment based on its consumer survey.

Vietnam marketplaces revenue was almost flat year over year at $3.3 million in the first quarter as a 13 per cent increase in the average revenue per listing was offset by a 13 per cent decrease in listings amid a sustained market weakness.

“In Vietnam, we are seeing a gradual improvement in the property market towards the end of the quarter, with listings on our platform hitting a 12-month high in March,” said Mr Krishnan.

The company’s chief financial officer Joe Dische highlighted “selective hiring and focused investment” for the remainder of 2024.

He added: “We plan to continue to invest in automation, leverage our existing technologies and generative AI to both provide superior customer experiences and manage our cost base as we drive continued revenue growth. Our full-year revenue outlook of $165 million to $180 million and full-year adjusted Ebitda outlook of $22 million to $26 million are unchanged.” THE BUSINESS TIMES

Singapore Airlines passengers were 'doing somersaults' during flight

Posted: May 22, 2024 | Last updated: May 22, 2024

Standing passengers caught out by deadly turbulence on an ill-fated Singapore Airlines flight yesterday were 'doing somersaults' as they were smashed into the cabin ceiling, a shocked passenger has said. The brutal turbulence, which occurred over Myanmar around 10 hours into the flight from Heathrow to Singapore, wrought havoc on board the aircraft with one British grandfather suffering a fatal heart attack and more than 80 other people sustaining injuries. Harrowing images taken on board showed how the cabin was littered with debris as distraught passengers tried desperately to stem the blood flowing from severe cuts and blunt force injuries.

Apple exec says this podcast is so good, he's stayed in his car listening even after getting home: ‘It's hard to stop'

By ashton jackson,cnbc • published may 22, 2024 • updated 6 hours ago.

There's a podcast that Apple executive Eddy Cue finds so irresistible, he sometimes stays in his car listening even after he gets home.

The show that has him glued to his driver's seat is called "Acquired," Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, recently told the Wall Street Journal . The show "tells the stories and strategies of great companies," according to its website.

Founded by co-hosts David Rosenthal and Ben Gilbert in 2015, "Acquired" dives into the history of today's biggest companies, from genesis to present day. Each episode involves hundreds of hours of research, causing some episodes to be at least three hours long, the pair told the Journal.

Gilbert and Rosenthal both have venture capital backgrounds. They started the podcast as a "passion project" nearly a decade ago, Gilbert wrote on social media platform X earlier this month. Today, some of the business leaders from the very companies they research are avid listeners.

"It's hard to stop once you start listening," Cue said.

"I'm probably in for 80 hours," LinkedIn COO Daniel Shapero added, in a testimonial on Acquired's website .

The podcast has more than 600,000 monthly listeners, some of whom pay a $10 monthly subscription, according to its website. Sponsorships and other deals help Rosenthal and Gilbert bring in millions of dollars per year in revenue, they told the Journal.

Snowflake CEO talks collaboration with Nvidia: ‘There's a lot to come'

Last year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sat down with the duo to discuss the origins of his multibillion-dollar tech company. He gave listeners some advice on a common topic: business books.

"In the last 30 years I've read my fair share of business books ... You're supposed to, first of all enjoy it, be inspired by it — but not to adopt it," Huang said. "That's not the whole point of these books. The whole point of these books is to share their experiences."

"You're supposed to ask, what does it mean to me in my world, and what does it mean to me in the context of what I'm going through," Huang added.

Longtime Berkshire Hathaway investor Charlie Munger also spoke with the co-hosts in October 2023, a month before his death. In that episode, he shared his favorite piece of advice to give young people, which was — perhaps surprisingly — no advice at all.

"I don't give advice to just any young people," Munger said. "It's getting hard out there."

Munger had the perfect recipe for success in the 1960s, he said: timing, intelligence, hard work and luck. It's a concoction that his admirers today can't replicate exactly, so he didn't want to make himself "more of a guru than I already am," he added.

AIPA VP and Qantas pilot Mark Hofmeyer talks Singapore Airlines flight SQ321

A Qantas pilot has revealed what likely happened in the terrifying few seconds that threw Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 into chaos.

Plane engine bursts into flames mid-air

The passengers and crew on-board Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 experienced a terrifying “rollercoaster” that saw their Boeing 777-300ER aircraft suddenly climb then pitch down within seconds, according to a Qantas pilot with more than 20 years’ flying experience.

AIPA vice president and current pilot Mark Hofmeyer said the horror moment 37,000 feet in the air was likely caused by thunderstorms, or convective turbulence, rather than clear air turbulence.

“Clear air turbulence is normally associated with a jet stream, a really strong core of air,” he told NewsWire on Wednesday.

“You don’t get many jet streams around the equator, which is where this happened.

“What you have up there though, is you get really big storms. Big puffy clouds, lots of air moving up, lots of air moving down, big thunderstorms.

“From what I can see from the telemetry (data collection), they have hit some convective turbulence, where the aircraft suddenly gone into a rate of climb and then it has suddenly gone into a rate of descent. It was like a rollercoaster.”

AIPA vice president and current Qantas pilot Mark Hofmeyer told NewsWire severe ‘convective turbulence’ was the likely cause of the carnage on SQ321. Picture: NewsWire / Gaye Gerard

The turbulence hit the plane while it was over Myanmar on its way to Singapore from London.

Mr Hofmeyer said the pilots had responded with impressive professional cool to the sudden jolt of chaos.

“If you’ve just experienced this really scary event, the first thing you want to do is increase the margin between your overspeed and stall speed, your two speeds,” he explained.

“They did a 6000 foot descent over five minutes. They went down at 1200 feet a minute, which is actually really benign.

“I think what has happened is, they have had the event, which has obviously scared the hell out of them, and then what they have done because they are operating at a really narrow margin, they’ve then made the decision to descend to a lower altitude.

“Basically what they were looking for is to be able to get to a lower spot, level off, sit on their hands, go ‘what the hell was that’, and then start to manage the process.

“So there was a rollercoaster event for two or three seconds, which caused the carnage we have all seen, but then they have subsequently descended to get the aircraft to a safe spot.”

The severe turbulence proved deadly and the full extent of its damage remains to be seen.

Alongside the pilot, 211 passengers and 18 crew members were on-board.

Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British man, lost his life from a suspected heart attack.

At least 18 other people have been hospitalised, including eight Australians.

Melbourne woman Teandra Tuhkunen told Sky News UK from Bangkok’s Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital she was “thrown” to the roof and floor of the aircraft when it hit the turbulence.

“Pretty much immediately, straight after that I was flung to the roof, before I had time to put my seatbelt on unfortunately,” she said.

“It was just so quick, over in a couple of seconds and then you’re just shocked. Everyone’s pretty freaked out.”

Photos and footage from the aftermath of the event show bloodied flight crew and the cabin strewn with mess.

Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong has apologised for the traumatic event.

Images from inside Singapore Airlines flight SQ321. Picture: Supplied

“On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased passenger,” he said.

“We also deeply apologise for the trauma experienced by all passengers and crew members on this flight.

“We are providing all possible assistance and support to them, along with their families and loved ones, during this difficult time. The wellbeing of our passengers and staff is our utmost priority.”

Mr Hofmeyer said aircraft manufacturers were pushing to reduce the number of pilots on flight decks at certain points during flights, and flight SQ321 demonstrated the necessity of having two “well-trained, well rested” pilots who could work together in emergencies.

“If you have that level of complexity, trying to regain control of the aircraft, descend to a lower altitude, then manage customers, air traffic control, diversion events, all of that by one pilot, you are reducing the safety outcome,” he said.

“Our mantra is you need two well-trained, well rested pilots on the flight deck at all times so that when things like this happen, you have two people there to make good decisions, take control of the aircraft and save the day.

“These aircraft are designed to withstand severe turbulence, so the aircraft is not going to break up on you.

“They’ve done a good job of regaining control of the aircraft, a good job of getting themselves back in control, a good job of dealing with an incredibly chaotic cabin.

“We’re trained to manage that and then to manage decisions after that. People often take pilots for granted, and there is this thing, ‘it’s all AI and the pilots don’t do anything’.

“That’s not the case. This is a situation where the pilots basically regained control and made good decisions and ended up with a safe outcome.”

The flying guru said it was “too early” to know the full details of what had happened, but it was likely a case of “bad luck” rather than a manufacturing defect.

“It’s probably a bit of bad luck,” he said.

“That is too early to say. We’ll find out through the investigation that always follows these things to find out exactly what happened.

“Regrettably, one person lost their life, but at the end of the day, the aircraft held up, the pilots got it on the ground safely.”

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 on the tarmac in Bangkok. Picture: Supplied

He said SQ321 was not similar to the horror LATAM flight from Sydney to Auckland in March, during which the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that experienced a “strong movement”.

Turbulence and in-flight upsets are the leading cause of airline cabin injuries, Carter Capner Law director Parter Carter said, far exceeding the number of injuries caused by other accidents or catastrophes such as an impact with terrain.

“While airline travel has become far safer in terms of fewer crashes than in past decades, turbulence and other in-flight issues seem to be increasing,” he said.

“Lufthansa, Air Canada and Hawaiian Airlines have all had planes that encountered unexpected turbulence over the past few years with a combined injury count well above 100 passengers and crew.”

Mr Hofmeyer told NewsWire flying was safe, but there was an important message for travellers to come out of the SQ321 nightmare.

“There are lot of things passengers can’t control when they are flying, but there is one thing they can,” he said.

“That is their seatbelt.”

About 20 people, including some Australians, are in intensive care wards in Thailand after the trauma on board flight SQ321.

Another plane carrying stranded Aussies has touched down on home soil after leaving New Caledonia as violent riots continue.

Passengers have captured the terrifying moment flames poured from a plane’s engine forcing an emergency landing with 179 people on board.

Oregon’s 2024 primary election: Where to vote, find results and more

Drop your ballot in an official box like this one before 8 p.m. (Lynne Terry/Oregon Capital Chronicle)

Oregon voters have just a few hours left to make their voices heard in Tuesday’s primary election.

All registered voters should have received a ballot by mail earlier this month with local and judicial races. Registered Democrats and Republicans also had partisan races for president, members of Congress and state lawmakers on their ballots.

To be counted, a ballot needs to be returned to a ballot drop box or county elections office by 8 p.m., or mailed and postmarked on Tuesday. Oregonians can find their closest drop box through an interactive search on the Secretary of State’s website or a printed list of all drop sites.

Voters can also find the state-issued voters’ pamphlet online and review coverage from the Capital Chronicle and other outlets as they make their decisions.

Presidential primaries were largely settled before Oregon’s primaries: Both Democratic President Joe Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump have enough delegates to secure their parties’ nominations in conventions scheduled for later this summer. Trump will be the only presidential candidate on Republican ballots, while Democrats will choose between Biden and self-help guru Marianne Williamson.

U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley aren’t up for election this year, but all six members of Oregon’s congressional delegation are. Democratic primaries in Oregon’s 3rd and 5th congressional districts have drawn the most attention: The winner of the Portland-based 3rd District primary is all but certain to replace retiring Rep. Earl Blumenauer, while the winner of the 5th District will face first-term Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer in a general election race that could determine control of the U.S. House.

All 60 state House seats and 15 of the 30 state Senate seats are also up for election. Republican primaries to replace rural senators who retired or were barred from running for reelection because they participated in the longest quorum-denying walkout in state history have drawn a lot of interest, as have a couple primaries for open Democratic seats in the Portland area.

The Secretary of State’s office will post initial results online shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday. Oregonians may not know the results of all races at 8 p.m., or even by Wednesday morning. Most counties plan to update results at least twice on Tuesday night, and county election workers will continue verifying signatures on ballot envelopes and processing ballots through the coming days. Ballots that arrive by May 28 can still be counted as long as they have a postmark from May 21 or earlier.

Election results won’t be official until the election is certified in June, but media outlets will call races earlier based on their own analysis. The Capital Chronicle will follow the Associated Press’s calls and report on which candidates are leading on Tuesday night without calling races prematurely.
