Hajj, one of the key pillars of the Muslim faith, takes place once a year and requires meticulous planning and budgeting. After a long break due to the pandemic, Saudi Arabia opened its doors to pilgrims from across the globe. So, if you are planning to go for Hajj, you should be aware of the visa application process, documents required and other related procedures. Read on as we outline the steps to make your Hajj trip from the UAE as smooth as possible. 

WHAT IS HAJJ? 

Hajj is the obligatory Islamic pilgrimage observed by Muslims in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and must be performed by Muslims at least once in a lifetime if they are physically and financially capable. The journey is meant to help Muslims cleanse their soul and strengthen their relationship with The Almighty. 

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A HAJJ PILGRIMAGE?

Muslims have to perform seven rituals over three to five days to complete the pilgrimage. The entire Hajj journey includes the following:

• Tawaf – This is the first step of Hajj. After changing into the Ihram or the Hajj clothes, Muslims must circle the Holy Kaaba in Mecca seven times, in a counter-clockwise direction.
• Say’i – After completing the tawaf of the Holy Kaaba, the pilgrim must walk seven times between the two hills, Safa and Marwa. The walk between these hills represents the journey that the Prophet Ibrahim’s (PBUH) wife Hajira embarked upon in search of water for her young son – Ismail. 
• Departure to Mina – Following the tawaf and say’i, pilgrims travel to Mina, where they camp overnight in tents.
• Prayers at Mount Arafat – On the second day of Hajj, pilgrims wake up at dawn and travel to Mount Arafat to perform ‘Wuquf’. Pilgrims spend the day on the mountain praying for forgiveness and wellbeing.
• Muzdalifah – After a day of praying at the Arafat Mountain, devotees head to Muzdalifah to offer the prayers at sunset (Maghrib) and night (Isha) prayers. Pilgrims stay in makeshift tents at Muzdalifah for the night and collect pebbles for the next stage of the Hajj, Ramy al-Jamarat . 
• Ramy al-Jamarat – For this Hajj ritual, pilgrims return to Mina for the stoning of the devil. Pilgrims must throw seven pebbles at a stone monument called the Jamrat Al Aqabah . It is a ritual that symbolises resisting the temptation of the devil.
• Eid Al Adha – The last step of the Hajj pilgrimage is the sacrifice of an animal. Pilgrims can complete this step by purchasing vouchers which signify that an animal was sacrificed in their name.

After completing these rituals, men are encouraged to completely shave their heads. Women are usually required only to cut a small lock of hair.

The final step in the Hajj pilgrimage is to head back to Mecca to circle the Kabaa and walk between Safa and Marwah. Pilgrims also drink Holy Water from the spring of Zamzam.

HAJJ 2022 DATES

The Hajj pilgrimage is celebrated between the eighth and thirteenth days of Dhu al-Hijjah – the last month of the Islamic calendar. According to the Georgian Calendar, the Hajj 2022 date is expected to begin on the 7th of July 2022.

Please remember that the date for Hajj 2022 is subject to moon sighting.

HOW TO GO FOR HAJJ FROM DUBAI?

As per the UAE Government, anyone who wishes to go for the pilgrimage must go through a licensed Hajj tour operator. These tour operators are responsible for obtaining a Hajj visa or Hajj permit and arranging transport and accommodation for the pilgrims.

So, the first step to planning a Hajj from Dubai is selecting a Hajj tour operator .

OBTAINING THE HAJJ VISA/PERMIT FROM DUBAI

Each country has a specific quota of pilgrims that can go for Hajj. If you want to go on the pilgrimage, you need to start the application process for the Hajj visa/permit and apply for a Saudi visa from Dubai . This is usually taken care of by your Hajj tour operator in Dubai.

The UAE government has set special criteria for applications in 2022.

• Applicants must be under 65 and haven’t observed Hajj before
• Must be fully vaccinated, including the booster shot

HAJJ FROM DUBAI FOR EXPATS

Due to the limited quota, the UAE no longer issues Hajj permits to expat residents. Muslim expats interested in performing Hajj must obtain a permit from their respective countries. However, you can still get a Hajj visa from Dubai for pilgrimage. The Hajj permit for expats only allows entrance to the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. Keep in mind that it would not be valid for any other city in Saudi Arabia. 

HAJJ FOR GCC EXPATRIATES

GCC nationals don’t need to apply for a Hajj visa as they get visas on arrival in KSA. Instead, they need to obtain an official Hajj permit. This permit entitles GGC Nationals to ‘express Hajj’ packages offered by Hajj tour operators in the UAE. 

HAJJ FOR UAE NATIONALS

The registrations are no longer open for the Hajj pilgrimage in 2022. However, willing devotees can register for the permit via licensed operators. You can check the licensed operator’s list via the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf). Registrations for Hajj 2023 will open in January.

Once you register, the Awqaf personnel will assess your application for eligibility and issue the Hajj permit. After you receive your Hajj permit, you can select your Hajj tour package in Dubai.

You should also bear in mind that due to the ongoing pandemic, there will be strict guidelines for performing Hajj, COVID-19 vaccinations, booster shots and a negative PCR test result. These checks are to ensure the safety of all pilgrims and staff.

SELECTING YOUR HAJJ TOUR PACKAGE FROM DUBAI

There are many ways to travel for Hajj. Depending on your budget, you can go for Hajj by air, bus or car.

By air: The flight time is approximately three hours if you are travelling for Hajj from Dubai.

You can arrive at the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madina. 

By bus or car : GCC nationals and expat residents in the UAE can enter KSA for Hajj by bus or car if they travel in a group with a tour operator.

Several Hajj tour operators offer Hajj packages from Dubai by bus. Hajj tour operators in Dubai usually categorise them by luxury or economy packages.

The Hajj and Umrah ministry has announced three packages for 2022.

• Al Abraj package – AED 14,426 per pilgrim
• Developed Camps package – AED 12,767 per individual.
• Normal Camps package – AED 10,022 per person.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED FOR A HAJJ VISA?

Here are some of the documents that you need for a Hajj visa. You will need to provide these to the Hajj tour operators in Dubai:

• Original passport with six-month validity. For expats, the UAE residence visa must have a three-month validity.
• A copy of the passport
• A copy of your Emirates ID
• Passport photos with a white background 
• Mahram Letter (the proof of kinship from an accompanying male relative) only applies to women below the age of 45. Women above the age of 45 can travel with a Hajj tour operator without needing a Mahram, provided they submit a no-objection letter from their husband, son or brother authorising them to travel for Hajj with the group.

WHAT IS THE COST OF HAJJ FROM DUBAI?

The cost to perform Hajj from Dubai will depend on the days you intend to stay and the type of package you opt for.

Please remember that you can only opt for Hajj packages from Dubai 2022 offered by Awqaf-approved Hajj tour operators in the emirate.

HOW CAN I GET A HAJJ VISA IN DUBAI?

You are only eligible for a Hajj visa if you have a Hajj permit from your home country. Hajj visas are issued by the KSA Ministry of Hajj and Umrah from mid-Shawwal to the 25th of Dhu Al Qadah .

Dubai: Want to go for Hajj but don’t know how to start the registration process? If you are living in the UAE, there are different ways in which you can go about the process. In this guide, we will break down the registration process and the new requirements that you need to be aware of before the Hajj season begins next month.

How to register for Hajj

If you are a UAE national, you can register for Hajj through the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments. Expatriates would need to register for Hajj through a travel agent. This is because registering for Hajj needs to be done through your individual country’s quota. Each country gets a specific quota for pilgrims for Hajj, according to Husham Kattingeri, an outbound travel supervisor at Regal Tours Worldwide, and travel agents who deal with your home country’s Hajj agencies can help you register.

“We deal mainly with Indian expatriates when it comes to Hajj, as we have a contract with agencies in India to take a certain quota from India for visa issuance,” he said.

So, an easy way to register is to reach out to the travel agency and ask them if they can assist you with the registration. Kattingeri added that for expats in the UAE, this process is easier compared to going to their home country to apply for a Hajj permit through the government quota. However, that is also an option if you are interested.

If you do choose to book your Hajj package through a travel agent in the UAE, most packages include flight tickets, hotel stays and food.

“Even when they go to Medina, they can choose whether they want a full board or half board, so the package is customised accordingly. The only thing that is not included in the package is the animal sacrifice at the end of Hajj, which they need to pay for directly at the location,” he said.

It is advisable to register for Hajj as soon as registrations open, as prices can be higher at the end of the season, with most quotas already filled.

What are the documents I would need?

If you are applying through a travel agent, you would need to submit the following documents:

• Passport copy, with the passport valid at least till the end of the Hajj season (valid for six months from the date of application submission) • Passport photograph • Proof of vaccinations. According to an announcement by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah , international pilgrims are required to have the meningococcal vaccine administered at least 10 days but not more than five years prior to their arrival, verified by a certificate from their home country. They must also be vaccinated against polio.

Kattingeri added: “Country to country there can be a few requirements that are different. For example, for Indian nationals, they are required to submit their PAN (Permanent Account Number) card and Adhar card copy when they register for Hajj.”

New rules you should keep in mind

Obtain a Hajj permit through the Nusk platform, which is crucial for the legitimacy of their pilgrimage. The ‘Nusuk’ app , which is available for Apple and Android devices, is the ‘official guide to Mecca and Medina’, providing pilgrims with information on immigration requirements, rituals that need to be followed during Umrah and details on various sites within Mecca and Medina that people can visit. The Hajj permit will be available through the app.

On April 27, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (MOHU) stated that the Council of Senior Scholars has issued a Fatwa that bans performing Hajj without an official permit.

“Undertaking the Hajj without a permit not only jeapordises your safety but also poses a significant risk to fellow pilgrims. Such actions are not in line with Shariah law and are considered grave transgressions against the directives issued for the public good,” the statement read.

“Registration for Nusuk is quite easy, and you can complete it online, by providing your Hajj visa number and some basic visa details,” Qaiser Mahmoud, a travel agent based in Sharjah, told Gulf News.

“If you are going for Hajj in a group, the group agent may also be able to help you complete the registration. But the Nusuk permit will be on your phone,” he added.

2. Minimum age for Hajj application – 12 years

Another rule to remember is that Saudi Arabia has set the minimum age for performing Hajj at 12 years.

3. Registration through the Sehhaty application is required to verify vaccination status.

You also need to register in the Sehhaty app to confirm the necessary vaccinations. The app by the Saudi Ministry of Health is available for Apple, Andoid and Huawei devices and you can complete your registration online.

Fines for violating Hajj rules

On May 7, the Saudi Ministry of Interior also posted on its official social media accounts the penalties that would be implemented if the rules are violated.

Fine of SAR10,000 (Dh9,792) against all citizens and residents who are caught without a Hajj permit and visitors in the following places:

- The city of Mecca - Central area - Sacred sites - Al-Haramain Train Station in Al-Rasifa - Security control centres - Sorting centres - Temporary security control centres

The post added that violating residents will face deportation to their country and prevented from entering Saudi Arabia according to the system-specified periods.

The fine imposed on violators, amounting to SAR10,000 (Dh9,792) , will be doubled if the violation is repeated.

Travelling abroad for Hajj and Umrah

Note : Hajj permits are not being issued to expatriate residents in the UAE since 2017. 

All desirous Hajj and Umrah pilgrims need to go through an operator licensed for this purpose. Check with the UAE's General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) for licensed operators. The quota of pilgrims that can go to Hajj is limited; therefore, it is wise to book in advance.

Check the portal of the  General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments for Hajj registration.

The Hajj/Umrah tour operator will apply for a visa on your behalf. The Ministry of Hajj and Umra of the KSA issues visas.

Hajj visas are issued from mid Shawwal until 25th day of the month of Dhu Al Qadah. Hajj visas are valid until 15th day of the month of Muharram.

Hajj visas are valid only for the holy cities of Makkah and Medina.

Women below 45 years of age need to show proof of Mahram (accompaniment of a male relative) to obtain a visa.

Booking flights and hotel

The tour operator will book flights and hotel for you. The cost of Hajj and Umrah package will depend on the grade of accommodation and services, proximity to the Holy Mosque, mode of transportation and airline travel class.

All pilgrimage operators are required to provide the pilgrims with suitable residence licensed by the Ministry of Hajj and the Civil Defence in the KSA. The accommodation should conform to the standard set by the authorities in terms of quality, hygiene, age of buildings, accessibility and capacity.

Signing a contract

Pilgrims and tour operators should sign a contract prepared by the Department of Hajj and Umrah at Awqaf. In case of any dispute, a complaint can be filed with the Department of Hajj and Umrah or with Complaints Committee of the official Hajj delegation.

How to arrive in the KSA

You can arrive into the KSA through one of the following airports:

• King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah
• Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madina

GCC nationals and UAE expatriate residents can enter the KSA by roadways; though, as a group with travelling through the tour operator.

Bodies in the UAE responsible for Hajj and Umrah affairs

Department of Hajj and Umrah at the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) of the UAE is responsible for establishing and reinforcing regulations with regard to contractors operating Hajj and Umrah tours and pilgrims' affairs.

The Official Hajj Delegation of the UAE is responsible to look after the affairs of UAE pilgrims in the KSA. Key services provided by the Official Hajj Delegation include preaching, providing free healthcare services, preparing for contingencies and conducting inspections at pilgrim accommodations in Makkah, Medina, Mina and Arafat.

Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai and Sharjah Islamic Affairs in Sharjah coordinate with the federal Awqaf.

Bodies in the KSA responsible for Hajj and Umrah affairs

Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is responsible for pilgrims' affairs. It offers many eServices for pilgrims of Hajj and Umrah.

Hajj for GCC nationals

GCC nationals do not need a visa to travel to the KSA; however, they must obtain the official Hajj permit to enter the KSA.

This entitles them to the 'express Hajj' packages where pilgrims arrive in Makkah right before rituals begin and return promptly after they end. The package can be arranged through Hajj tour operators.

Free Hajj for special cases

There are many organisations in the UAE that organise free Hajj trips for UAE nationals. The organisations include:

• The Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation
• Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation
• Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre

These organisations offer free Hajj visits to those who cannot afford the cost, the elderly, widowed and divorced women and those whose applications were not approved in the previous years. In addition, applicants should not have performed Hajj previously and should be over 40 years old.

Applicants should submit their applications through the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UAE embassies abroad or an organisation approved by the foundation.

How to Travel to Hajj From the UAE – A Complete Guide

The Hajj season for 2023 has started and many pilgrims now seek their journey to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. As one of the five pillars of Islam, Hajj is a holy deity which many Muslims fulfil each year. Many followers globally, including the Emirates, have started preparing and registering for Hajj this year too. That said, it is crucial to know and understand the procedures if you want to travel to Hajj from the UAE. We have penned down the details and requirements that will cater to these requirements.  

What is Hajj?

Hajj is among the five pillars of Islam. It is a sacred pilgrimage which Muslims must perform once in their lives if they are financially and physically able. Hajj is performed in the last month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul Hijjah, in Makkah, Saudia Arabia. The pilgrimage includes the following rites that are essential to fulfil:

• Intention and Preparation
• Entering the premises of the mosque in Ihram 
• Doing Tawaf seven times
• Performing Say’i between Safa and Marwa 
• Spending the day at the city-tent Mina
• Day of Arafat 
• Stay in Muzdalifah
• Stoning of the devil- Ramy al Jamarat 
• Perform a farewell Tawaf 

Hajj is a pilgrimage that cleanses the hearts of Muslims and must be performed by believers once in a lifetime if they can. Numerous Muslims gather in the holy city of Makkah to participate in this prayer every year. 

It includes people from all around the world, including the UAE. Therefore, individuals in the Emirates who wish to travel to Hajj can refer to our guide, which covers all the essential requirements for travelling from the UAE and its procedures.

How to Travel for Hajj from the UAE?

To perform and travel to Hajj from the UAE, the procedure includes the following steps.

HAJJ REGISTRATION 

The UAE nationals can register for Hajj via UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf). For details on licenced operators and Hajj registration, follow these steps: 

• First register at one of the Awqaf branches spread across the UAE. The authorised registration centres include TAMM service centres, Tas’heel service centres and more. You can register using the Emirates ID card. 
• A reference number is sent to the applicant’s registered contact number via SMS. 
• The applicants are then sorted out on different criteria set by the authority. The approved applicants are notified after the registration process. 
• When the applicants are approved, they will receive a notification via SMS and would then be able to select a Hajj campaign. 
• To select the desired Hajj package, the applicant must visit Awqaf’s official website and register with their contact details and Emirates ID number/ reference number. 
• After going through the details of the selected Hajj campaign, submit the application which will be reviewed by the contractor. 
• After the application is submitted, the selected contractor can be changed within 72 hours before they approve it. 
• The applicant must also have the necessary medical tests and vaccines from authorised medical centres. 
• When the contractor approves the application, the applicant will be notified to sign the contract and submit the fees. 
• The pilgrim card will then be issued to the applicant to perform Hajj.

The selected tour operator applies for the Hajj visa for UAE residents. The visa is issued by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah of the KSA. Besides, Hajj visas are issued from mid of the month of Shawwal to the 25th of Dhu Al Qadah and are valid till the 15th of Muharram. These visas are only valid to go to Makkah and Madina. The following documents are required by the Hajj operator for a Hajj visa: 

• An original passport that has a validity of six months. Also, in the case of Expats, the UAE residence visa must have a three-month validity.
• A passport copy
• Emirates ID copy 
• Passport-sized photos with a white background. Angle or side-viewed images will not be accepted. 
• A mahram letter is required for women aged below 45. However, women older than 45 years can travel without a Mehram if they provide a no-objection letter from their husband, brother or son to travel with the Hajj tour operator. 

Since 2017, the UAE government has stopped issuing Hajj Permits to Expats. These permits allowed the expats to travel for Hajj from the UAE. They could stay for 14 to 21 days in Makkah and Madina only. However, the expats need to obtain the Hajj permit from their respective country’s Hajj quota, but they can apply for the Hajj visa from the UAE.

BOOKING AND FLIGHTS 

The hotels and flights for Hajj will be booked by the tour operator. The package for Hajj includes the accommodation and services, the premise distance from the Holy mosque, transportation modes and travel class of the airline. All these factors vary with the type of package. 

Moreover, the Ministry of Hajj and Civil Defence in the KSA oversees the residence of the pilgrims. The accommodation is accounted for based on hygiene, age of the property, capacity accessibility and quality. 

IMPORTANT VACCINATIONS 

All pilgrims must be fully vaccinated. They must also submit a vaccination certificate which should be issued no less than ten days before coming to KSA or more than three years ago. The KSA has recommended the following vaccinations:

• Meningococcal vaccine (quadruple) – mandatory 
• Pneumococcal vaccine for those aged above 65 or suffer from chronic disease  
• Seasonal flu vaccine 

MODE OF TRANSPORTATION TO TRAVEL FOR HAJJ FROM THE UAE

The tour operator is responsible for managing the modes of transportation for the pilgrims.  Following are the modes of transportation when travelling to Hajj from the UAE.

BY AIR 

When travelling by air, you can reach the KSA within three hours. You can arrive at the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madina. You can also arrive in KSA via King Abdulaziz International Airport located in Jeddah. 

BY ROAD 

The UAE expats and GCC nationals can arrive in KSA via roadways. They can travel in groups with the tour operator. 

HAJJ FOR GCC NATIONALS 

No visa is needed for GCC nationals to travel to KSA. instead, they are required to attain an official Hajj permit. Tour operators can arrange “express Hajj” packages for the GCC nationals where they can arrive in KSA just before the Hajj rituals start and leave as soon as they are concluded.  

FREE HAJJ FOR SPECIAL CASES IN THE UAE

Certain organisations plan free Hajj trips for UAE nationals who cannot afford to perform Hajj. These organisations offer free Hajj for widowed, elderly and divorced women. They also plan free Hajj for those whose application wasn’t accepted in former years. However, the applicants must be aged above 40 and must not have performed Hajj previously. The organisations that offer such Hajj packages from the UAE include

• Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre 
• The Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation 
• Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation

UAE authorities have announced that residents wishing to perform Haj this year can register from February 13 to March 10 . Since the announcement, Haj operators have recorded heavy inquiries for the pilgrimage. Due to massive interest from residents, operators have urged the people to register within this month.

“We request residents to apply for Haj within this months as the seats will fill up soon due to the many inquiries we are receiving every day,” said Shebin Rasheed from Bait al Ateeq Hajj services based in the holy city of Makkah with a subsidiary office in Sharjah. The agency provides visas to the residents and the Haj operators based in the country.

“However, we have a limited number of days and once the preparation for the Holy Month of Ramadan begins, the process slows down considerably,” said Rasheed.

Even though operators cater to every nationality, they have to distribute seats within the limited number of available quotas given to them from each country of expats.

“For example, there are nearly 175,000 applications allotted from Saudi Arabia to India. The Haj board, under the Indian Government, keeps 80 per cent of the quota, and the remaining is offered to the private Haj operators,” said Jaffer Pulappatta, who facilitates groups for Haj pilgrims.

“In the 20 per cent offered, we reserve the seats from a private agency based in India for the Indian Nationals in the UAE, and the person can fly and return to UAE rather than his home country,” added Pulappatta.

Emirati nationals do not require a visa to perform Haj but require a permit.

How much it costs

The total pilgrimage package varies depending on nationalities and port of departure. The Haj package for an Indian expat in UAE may cost between Dh30,000 to Dh55,000, depending on the amenities and accommodation. But it is nearly Dh15,000 less expensive for Indians performing Haj on government quota, which is difficult for expats to avail.

“It is difficult for expats to perform Haj from their home country. In the government quota in some countries, the passport should be submitted months before the travel, which is not feasible due to work commitments,” said Pulappatta.

Travelling under government quota from the home country requires 40 days. “However, expats travelling from UAE can be offered two packages, 15 days and 21 days. The price of the latter is slightly high,” said Pulapatta.

Documentation required

The main document required is a passport copy, photo, and vaccination certificate. “The vaccination certificate is not mandatory, but the presence of yellow fever makes it a requirement,” said Rasheed.

This year, Saudi Arabia will not impose restrictions on the number of pilgrims for this year's Haj after three years of Covid-19 curbs.

Travel details

The airline catering to Haj pilgrims from the UAE is Saudi Arabian Airlines, “Other airlines that touch the Haj terminal at Jeddah Airport also facilitate the travel,” said Rasheed.

Internal travel within Saudi is done by bus.

Dubai residents depart from the airports in the UAE from separate Haj-designated gates and land in Jeddah. “At the arrival airport, we have our buses to take the pilgrims to Makkah and then to Madina,” said Rasheed.

“On the way to three cities, we also take the pilgrims to various historical sites to make the best experience and return to the destination either from Jeddah or Madina based on the availability of the ticket,”

Emirates to operate extra flights for upcoming Hajj season

DUBAI, UAE, 22 June 2022  – With the significant demand for air travel during Hajj, Emirates is deploying extra flights to ensure more connectivity for the scores of pilgrims making their way to the Holy City of Makkah. Emirates will be operating special flights to Jeddah and Medina during the upcoming Hajj season to carry pilgrims for this special period.

Emirates will be deploying 31 additional flights to Jeddah and double daily flights to Medina from 23 June to 20 July to help transport pilgrims to carry out one of the key pillars of Islam. These services will run in parallel with Emirates’ regularly scheduled services.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has greatly expanded its Hajj participation this year to nearly a million pilgrims. This year, Emirates has seen strong demand for Hajj travel from Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Turkey, Egypt, Ethiopia, Malaysia, the UK, US, UAE and Algeria.

The special services are available to travellers holding a valid Hajj visa. Pilgrims must also be under the age of 65, hold a valid vaccination certificate with a vaccine authorised by the Saudi Ministry of Health, and must also carry a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of departure. 

A pilgrim-centric experience with Emirates

Given the significance of the once-in-a-lifetime Hajj experience, the airline’s teams have been working hard to ensure that every detail of the pilgrim’s experience is aligned with the tenets of their faith.

On the ground in Dubai, Emirates has a special Hajj airport team to help manage check-in, transfers, and helping to facilitate a seamless and convenient on ground experience for Hajj pilgrims. Emirates has also set up dedicated check-in and transfer counters for Hajj passengers transiting in Dubai. For Hajj travellers having a longer layover in Dubai before continuing on to Jeddah or Medina, dedicated teams are on hand to escort those groups and support them on all of their arrival formalities.

From the moment pilgrims step onto the aircraft, a range of initiatives have been planned in keeping with the values and traditions of the Hajj journey.

Extra provisions to accommodate Hajj traveller needs such as ablution cleansing rituals, unperfumed towels, advising passengers while en route to Jeddah about when they have entered Al Miqat zones (state of sanctity) and changing of Ihram robes through special PAs, and other arrangements have been planned to ease their journey and ready them for the rest of their pilgrimage. Emirates’ award winning  ice  system will also feature a special Hajj video that covers safety, general formalities and information about performing the Hajj pilgrimage. Dr. Saafir earned a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies and Leadership from Bayan at Claremont School of Theology (CST) in 2014, and then completed his Ph.D. at CST in Practical Theology. He is the resident Imam and the Founding Executive Director for Islah Academy, a K-8 Islamic private school based in Los Angeles. He is a former chaplain of The California Institute for Women and the former Imam of Masjid At-Taqwa in Altadena, CA. In 2018, Imam Jihad was awarded with the prestigious KCET Local Hero’s Award. More recently, South Coast Interfaith Council recognized Dr. Saafir as its “2022 Faith Leader of the Year.” Through Dr. Jihad Saafir’s leadership, Islah LA has spawned a new wave of civic engagement within the Muslim American community. At Bayan, he teaches courses in Muslim adolescent identity formation, leadership development, and Islamic education.

Ustadh Abdullah al Mamun is the Senior Director of Advancement at Bayan.  a role in which he works on organizational development, fundraising, and student recruitment. He is an activist, public speaker, entrepreneur, advisor to boards, and is a nationally recognized director with experience in professional leadership and management experience in both nonprofit and for-profit sectors. This includes his work in broadcast television and corporate America for over eight years, then he ran his own marketing consulting firm for four years. He later served as the Deputy Executive Director for a nationally recognized Muslim nonprofit for eight years prior to joining Bayan in January 2021. Abdullah has completed his undergraduate studies at Fordham University and then completed his graduate studies from New York University. REGISTRATION PROCESS

Complete the initial AQRA registration form by clicking “Book Now” on their webpage and enter your contact information as the first traveler in your party. Indicate the room type your party will need, and your US gateway airport (or other). Then you will need to enter the names and birth dates of the other members of your party. You can upload scans of the passport pages for your members, or submit the form without the scans at this time. You will then reach the payment screen to make the deposit with your credit card. An AQRA representative will follow up with you. Your passport scan is needed so that the necessary visa arrangements and in-country bookings can be made.

Once you have registered and paid your deposit, you will also receive periodic communications from Bayan personnel to help prepare you for the program. Bayan does not handle flight arrangements. • Who is leading the tour? Bayan’s vice president and professor Munir Shaikh will be the faculty escort for the tour. He holds an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a specialization in the history of Islamic Iberia (Al-Andalus), and certificates from academic programs in Morocco, Egypt and Spain. He has lived for periods of time in Spain (and Morocco), and is conversant in Spanish. He has taught academic courses on Islamic Spain, Middle Eastern history, Islam, and world history, and led world heritage tours in various countries, including seven previous excursions in Southern Spain.
• What is the expected group size? Bayan’s tours are focused on providing a well-rounded experience featuring scholarly knowledge, cultural exposure, recreational activities, and free time. Most tour groups are multi-generational and diverse in nature. In addition to historical and contemporary sites of interest, the itinerary includes visits to mosques and other places of worship to accommodate the religious needs of group members. Our group size tends to be in the range of 30-40 participants from North America and beyond. Participants are able to get to know one another and develop bonds of friendship and camaraderie that can last a lifetime. By participating in a tour, you are helping sustain and advance Bayan’s mission as a non-profit educational institution.
• When is the registration deadline? We are accepting registrations for the tour until March 31, in order to reserve seats on a train, book sufficient hotel rooms, procure entrance tickets to monuments, and ensure other details. You must pay a refundable deposit of $500 per traveler. Deposits are partially refundable through February 15, 2024, however, a cancellation charge of $ 100 per traveler will apply for any cancellation requested 24 hours after time of booking. The balance payment is due no later than April 15, 2024.
• Is a visa required for U.S. citizens to enter Spain? Bayan’s tours are open to participants who wish to join from anywhere in the world. However, the majority of participants tend to be from the United States. US passport holders do not need to obtain a visa to enter Spain for tourism. This is true for nationals of many other countries as well. However, non-US passport holders are encouraged to check requirements for their nationality and obtain a visa if required.
• How physically demanding is the tour? Our group will be transported from city to city in a luxury air-conditioned tourist bus. However, in each city, since we will be in the historical centers where buses can't go, we will use the metro or other local public transportation, and occasional taxis, to get around. Even so, there will be a significant amount of walking on most days, on slight inclines and steps. The streets at times will have cobblestones. The walking distances involved at any given time can range from 1/4 to 1/2 mile between rest points. The guides will take into account the differing abilities and health conditions of group members and regulate the pace and intensity of the tour accordingly. Nonetheless, participants should expect to walk roughly 12,000 steps each day (about 6 miles in aggregate) during the first few days of the program, and perhaps 8,000 steps per day during the latter portion of the itinerary. This tour may not be suitable for those with knee, hip or foot pain that could be aggravated by the amount of walking involved. Ideally, all participants should prepare for the tour by walking at least 5,000 steps per day in the weeks leading up to the tour.
• What type of food will we have on the tour? Spain’s food is a mix of Mediterranean and local traditions. Some dishes, such as paella, reveal their roots in Arab/Muslim cuisines. While the types of vegetarian options have grown in recent years in Spain, most local meat dishes feature pork (we will be sure to avoid any foods prepared with pork or alcohol). During the tour, we will dine at restaurants that serve zabiha halal foods, or at places that offer seafood and vegetarian options. You can expect meals to include Middle Eastern, Turkish and Moroccan dishes at restaurants run by local Muslims, and Italian and other types of dishes more generally. You’ll have the option of sampling various suitable tapas (small dishes) that are routinely consumed in neighborhood establishments..
• Will you provide more information about the daily schedule and other details? Yes, all participants who have completed their full payment will receive a detailed information packet that includes descriptions of the cities and sites to be visited, the daily schedule, currency exchange, local prayer times, electrical adapters, weather, what to pack, and more.
• What precautions are you taking with regard to COVID-19? We encourage participants to be fully vaccinated with at least one booster shot for all who are eligible to receive these shots. Travelers may visit Spain for tourism, but must provide either a certificate proving full vaccination, a negative test (PCR or rapid antigen), or a certificate of recovery. Travelers can enter using the EU Digital Covid Certificate or its equivalents. We do not expect to mandate masking during the tour, but we encourage masking whenever possible and according to each individual’s comfort level. For example, when shopping in crowded areas, it would be best to wear a mask. General sanitary practices should be maintained at all times, such as washing hands with soap, using sanitizing gels and wipes, and maintaining a reasonable distance between individuals.
