The chapter presents an overview of the tourism industry in India and Himachal Pradesh. The tourist sector in Himachal Pradesh is one of the most important functions in the state’s economy. In the first place, it talks about the progression of tourist arrival and foreign exchange earnings acquired by the country through the tourism sector. Then, it discusses the role and objectives of national and international agencies working for the development of the tourism sector in India. It is followed by the critical assessment of schemes and policies related to tourism development. The following segment manages the ranking/positioning of Indian states and union territories based on tourists’ arrival over the years. Through this ranking, the chapter provides a more concrete answer as to why Himachal Pradesh has been selected as the study area. The chapter discussed the current status of the tourism industry in Himachal Pradesh. It likewise covered the organizations working for tourism development in the state and provides a critical assessment of the tourism policy followed by the state. However, yet tourism should not be observed as a Panacea for rural development. An environment scanning has been done to determine the plausible threats and opportunities for the tourism industry in Himachal Pradesh.

The tourist sector in Himachal Pradesh is expanding and contributing significantly to the creation of jobs and economic prosperity in the area. It is anticipated that the establishment of businesses, the development of infrastructure, and the creation of jobs will all have a substantial impact on the socioeconomic development of the state. Tourism has the capacity to help other economic sectors through its backward and forward connections and cross-sectoral synergies with businesses including agriculture, horticulture, poultry, handicrafts, transportation, and construction, among others. Spending on tourism brings about a number of transactions that demand the supply of goods and services from these related businesses. As a result of tourist spending, consumer demand rises, creating more jobs and having a positive multiplier effect on the economy. How well a region develops tourism is dependent on its resources. Due to the tourism industries growing impact on the environment's resources, it is now more crucial than ever to encourage environmentally friendly tourism. Himachal is a well-known tourist attraction both domestically and internationally. Domestic tourists come to this hill state for a number of reasons, such as to take in the peace and quiet, to escape the oppressive heat of the lowlands, to relax, or to perform pilgrimages. Visitors from other countries are drawn to the hill state because of its historical significance. New tourism niches, such as adventure, trekking, camping, and sport tourism, have been found for both domestic and foreign tourists. The State Government has started a number of initiatives to stimulate travel and tourism.

At present, poverty and environmental problems are some of the most important challenges human society is facing. It is difficult to address both problems at the same time because these two problems sometimes conflict. Poor villagers in less developed countries (LDC)/developing countries (DC) have no choice but to exploit natural resources around them, such as trees, to make a living which leads to deforestation. So, environmental preservation is often neglected in these areas. That's why ―ecotourism‖ is receiving more attention among conservationists as a means to promote both environmental preservation and income generation. Tourism is simply defined as ―the practice of traveling for recreation‖. As the largest business sector in the world economy, the tourism industry is estimated to comprise US$ 5890 billion, or 9.9% of the total world GDP. Ecotourism provides a sustainable alternative to conventional tourism and has continued to gain momentum over the last two decades. India is one of the tourist hubs in the world. Himachal is one of the major tourist spots in India. The study is primary research based. Tourism, basically, is an infrastructure based service product. The nature of the service marketed being highly intangible and perishable offers a limited scope for creating and maintaining the distinctive competitive edge. Effective marketing of tourism needs constant gearing up of infrastructure to international standards and presupposes its coordination with the tourism suppliers. Tourism makes state business that affect the livelihood of people here study serves as business and social ethical purpose. Himachal is a state, which can attract tourists for international festivals such as Mandi international Shivratri, Kullu International Dushera. On other side, Bir international paragliding a sports and adventurous activity which encourages tourists to study and visit in the state. CONCEPT OF TOURISM: Tourism is an activity involving mixture of material and physiological factors. These include the availability of accommodation, transportation, tourist attractions and entertainments. The psychological factors takes into account a wide spectrum of attitudes and expectations varying from pure escapism to fulfill of a dream or fantasy , or rest, entertainment, educational and other interests. All are usually assessed and evaluates by the tourists. Since the beginning of human history, the urge to move about has been an important human activity. From the earliest historical times, man has cherished the desire to discover the unknown, to explore new and staring places, to seek changes of environment and to undergo new experiences. Thus was a time when man and woman along with their families or tribes roamed about in search and food and shelter in this process, discovered new area to settle down. The search for food and shelter led to new conquests and adventures. The mythologies, espies and histories of various nations contain description of such adventures. The process of searching has continued through the ages corresponding with different states in the development of technology and the changes in the modes are style of travelling and the facilities available. mean while, new world have been discovered, new areas have been brought under human occupation, new nations have emerged and there have been revolutionary changes in technology as well as human expectations but the urge of travel has remained unchanged. Over the centuries, the passion for the travelling has become stronger and more popular among the average citizens. New motives have been added to the reasons for people understanding long or short journeys like the curiosity or the urge to the different people and just to have some adventure, a change from the normal way of life, some relaxation and fun. The word " tourism " is related to " tour " which is derived from Latin word " tornos " means a tool for describing a circle or turners wheel.
