About hunting in el carrizal, species & hunting seasons in argentina, march & april.
This is the prime time to hunt red stags during the roar (rut). In addition to stag there is a dozen other big game species available and the dove shooting is also at its best. Early March and the peak of the roar is the recommended time for bow hunters seeking a trophy stag spot and stalk.
May To July
Once the roar is over we still enjoy high success with rifle hunters going after stag. Late fall and early winter is also the rutting season for fallow deer and blackbuck. And from May to July we can add ducks and perdiz to make the perfect combo hunt.

Once you arrive at your final destination, we provide transportation in and out of the airport. Upon arrival you should look for a sign that will read your name or your party name.

Every hunt is fully guided by our very experienced guides. Hunts are 1 x 1 and 2 x 1.
Hunts are conducted on 4WD vehicles. Final approach is done on foot, spot and stalk. Hunters may expect to stalk a few miles per day and it implies light hiking on relatively flat terrain.
Trophy FAQs
The trophy shipping is managed by our broker agent; he will request a few forms and documents and dispatch your trophies back home. South American Adventure Safaris is happy to refer our guests to the best of Argentina's taxidermist. However, we often recommend that our guests select a qualified professional in their own country.
It is very simple. After the hunt we put you in touch with the exporting company that will send you an information request (name, destination of trophies, port of entry, import broker, etc), their fees and conditions and a quote for their exporting job. Once you agree with this we then take all trophies to Buenos Aires to the exporter warehouse who takes over and carries out the job in coordination with the import broker you have nominated. We follow up to make sure he delivers on time.

Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world
Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world. While it’s well known for fine wines, soccer, the tango, and Eva Peron, over the last decade, the country has emerged as the premier reverse season fly-fishing & hunting destination—because winter in the U.S. means the kickoff to summer in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s easy to reach Buenos Aires via overnight flights, and visitors to this fascinating nation rave about the hospitality, warmth, and sense of cultural and family pride shared by the Argentine people.
Since red deer were introduced into Argentina more than a hundred years ago, they have flourished throughout many ranges in the country. Argentina has some of the world’s best free-range red stag hunting in the northwestern regions of Patagonia. The remoteness, endless land, huge ranches, friendly peolple and abundance of wild game, puts the country as unique hunting destination.
However, not all stag hunts are created equal. It is important to choose the right outfitter.
Red Stag Patagonia is brought to you by the team at David Denies Bird Hunting and their partner Sebastian F. Casado. For over 30 years David Denies has operated the finest bird hunting lodges in South America and has deservedly built a reputation for providing world-class sport supported by impeccable service and lodging. Red Stag Patagonia mirrors the commitment to quality and integrity.
The hunting season begins March 1st and ends in mid-June, with the optimal period for roaring red stags lasting through the month of March and April. With so much riding on a hunt, you need to consider your options carefully–and work with a guide and outfitter that cares as much about your success as you do.
At each lodge, our commitment is the same. We work tirelessly before, during, and after the season to offer our guests an authentic and rewarding experience. We pay attention to the smallest details—from being on time every time to the quality of our wines, to the type of vehicles we choose. Our Argentine big game lodges host only a limited number of guests each week, again ensuring great service and plenty of “elbow room” in the lodge and on the field.

About hunting in Argentina
Argentina is the most popular hunting destination in the world, attracting more than 20,000 foreign hunters every year. The vast majority are wingshooters, many of whom come for Argentina’s world-famous high-volume dove shooting. Doves are considered pests in this region; huge flocks come into agricultural fields in incredible numbers. However, Argentina is also an excellent destination for big-game hunters; it has some of the best free-range red stag hunting in the world. Cordoba Province is the most famous destination for high-volume dove shooting, but there are many other regions that have excellent wingshooting. Waterfowl and upland birds are plentiful in many areas and provide outstanding mixed-bag wingshooting. Most hunters choose either wingshooting or big-game hunting since they usually take place in different areas; however, combo hunts are possible. Red stags were originally introduced into Patagonia in the foothills of the Andes and La Pampa Province a hundred years ago. In addition to stags, other big game is available to hunt, including water buffalo, brocket deer, white-lipped peccary, and wild boar. Other animals have been introduced in some areas, including axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer, feral goats and sheep, and mouflon. Pumas are also plentiful. Many lodges in Argentina are upscale, with excellent food and wine provided, and often a midday barbecue is served in the field. The country is filled with interesting culture and contrasts, including gauchos in traditional dress sitting in sheepskin-lined saddles, villagers driving horse-drawn carts, and locals passing around the traditional gourd of mate.
What you need to know
- 1. Planning your trip
- 2. Upon arrival
- 4. After the hunt
Planning your trip
No visa is required for citizens of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, or the European Union for stays of less than 90 days.
Importing Firearms
Increasing numbers of hunters now rent firearms for their Argentina hunts to avoid the hassle of bringing them, and many outfitters are equipped with excellent guns to rent—but be sure to check with your outfitter first if you wish to go this route.
Gun-import requirements for Argentina have been in flux in recent years, which has caused some confusion for visiting hunters. Visitors who want to import breech loading shotguns or rifles can do so by having their application filled out before hand with the help of their outfitter and then apply for the import permit upon arrival. If you want to import a semi-automatic gun you need to do so by applying for a temporary import permit at the nearest Argentine Consulate, which must be done in person. Check with your outfitter in advance of your trip for the most up-to-date requirements. You will definitely need to fill out the required forms for RENAR (Registro Nacional de Armas) in advance of your trip; you should be able to get these forms from your outfitter. If you can make your port of entry Cordoba as many hunters report entering Cordoba with guns is much less time consuming than Buenos Aires.
Upon arrival
Buenos Aires, where many hunters arrive, has two airports: Ezeisa Airport (EZE) is where many international flights arrive. Many domestic flights leave from Newbery Airport (AEP), which is across town. It can take as much as two hours to go from one to the other, so if you are connecting, it’s important to allow plenty of time.
It’s a good idea to arrange for someone to meet you at the airport to assist with rifle importation, especially if you don’t speak Spanish. You will collect your luggage and take your guns to the RENAR office, where your paperwork will be processed. Then you will have to go through Argentine customs, where a second round of paperwork is required. The process is time-consuming.
It’s important to keep your RENAR papers and passport with you at all times while you are hunting in case you are stopped by a routine police check.
Argentina’s winter climate is mostly mild during hunting season. Rain gear is always a must, as are waterproof boots. If you are wingshooting, prepare for shooting many, many rounds; a jacket or vest with a recoil pad is a good idea, and shooting gloves are a must. Many outfitters recommend semiautomatic shotguns as they have less recoil; either 12- or 20-gauge guns are fine. For wingshooting, you will purchase shells from your outfitter and be charged for those you use at the end of the trip. Big-game hunting areas vary in terms of terrain and difficulty, so consult with your outfitter for a recommended gear list.
After the hunt
It’s important to note that most species native to Argentina, such as puma, peccary, and brocket deer, can be legally hunted in many provinces but cannot be exported. Introduced species such as red stag can be exported with the proper permits. When your hunt is completed, your outfitter can arrange to have your trophies shipped to a taxidermist to prepare them for shipping and export.

THE ROOST ARGENTINA
HUNTING LODGE & OUTFITTER
John Wilson & Nestor Villareal
My father's work carried us to Venezuela, Argentina and Uruguay where I spent lots of my time learning about birds, air rifles, shotguns and training hunting dogs. Even today when I land at the international airport in Uruguay, I chuckle remembering that my father and I used to train his pointers on the same airstrip. I enjoyed my many days of hunting after I returned to the States, but I always dreamed of one day sharing the amazing hunting experiences of my youth. The inspiration for building "The Roost" was that some of the most fulfilling moments of my lifetime have been as an outfitter, in Argentina, sharing this passion with others. Get to know us even better

Selva, Santiago Del Estero
“The Roost” Argentina is run by its owners with headquarters located in Selva, Santiago Del Estero and Cordoba City, Cordoba. Hunting in Argentina: What you need to know.
A tough bull with a bad temper and a big cat. A beautiful black antelope with spiral horns, a native of India. A local bird that reverses gender roles, with the male building the nest and hatching eggs. Bright colored exotic ducks. In the shadow of the Andes, on the wide-open Pampas, in the wild Patagonia or along its mighty rivers, hunting in Argentina is much more than unlimited dove and the red stag. This post gives you a brief overview of what, where, and when you can hunt in Argentina .
Hunting grounds of Argentina
Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world by land area, stretching for 2,360 miles (3,800 km) from the Tierra del Fuego near the Antarctic to the subtropics near the northern border with Bolivia . Its landscape is dominated by the Pampas, a vast grassland that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes. Part of the Pampas have been turned into flourishing agricultural lands, while others remain in their grassland glory, and serve as pastures for free-ranging cattle – and habitat for big and small game.
Another important landmark is the Andes, a mighty mountain range that marks Argentina’s border with Chile. In the north, the foothills of the Andes are covered with lush subtropical forests, while the more to the south, the lower, but also the wilder and more desolate the mountains become. The northern part of the country is known as Patagonia, and is a comparatively wild and untouched by civilization area. If you’re looking for a big-game wilderness adventure, seek your outfitter in Patagonia.
Mighty rivers flow from the Andes into the Atlantic through Argentina, two of them – Paraná and Uruguay – building valleys with flourishing agricultural lands that provide food to diverse species that can also find cover in riverbeds, woods, and orchids. Further on to the north, there is the Chaco region, with hot and semi-arid plains covered with forests, shrublands, and savannas, and in the north-west you find subtropical climate with lush forests in the mountains.
Game bird hunting in Argentina
Wingshooting is what attracts most hunters to Argentina, and for a good reason: the numbers of birds in the country must be seen to be believed. Along with the world-famous pigeon and dove shooting, the country also offers upland bird hunting and outstanding opportunities for waterfowl hunting.
Waterfowl hunting
If you’re anything like a duck hunter, you should definitely consider adding a day or two of duck shooting to your Argentinean adventure. Just look at the photos of exciting and exotic local species, such as the whistling duck , white-cheeked pintail , rosy-billed pochard , or red shoveler ! And they are found in such numbers that it justifies a dedicated trip.
Waterfowl hunting opportunities exist all over Argentina, but the highest concentration of options is found in the valleys of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, in the Entre Rios and Santa Fe , as well as the Buenos Aires provinces. These trips can be easily combined with fishing (known as “cast-and-blast trips”) and/or big-game hunting, especially for such animals as water buffalo.
Upland bird hunting in Argentina
Locally known as “perdiz”, which is the Spanish for “ partridge “, the bird that you’re going to hunt in Argentina has nothing to do with the grey (Am. E.: “Hungarian”) or red-legged partridges. Allow us to introduce spotted tinamou (Nothura maculosa), a small, plump bird, with brown camouflaging plumage that includes distinctive spotting and barring. Endemic to the Pampas, spotted tinamou has curious reproduction patterns, with the male bird responsible for nesting and incubation, and usually prefers hiding or running to flying
Much like the Old World partridge, perdiz is an excellent bird to hunt over pointers and setters , with Brittany spaniel apparently the top choice of local outfitters who offer this hunt. Good perdiz grounds usually happen to be good pigeon and dove grounds, too, and most outfitters offer “mixed bag” trips that allow you to pursue both types of bird shooting.
Pigeon and dove shooting
Pigeon and dove shooting in Argentina hardly needs an additional introduction. Most offers are spread along the Argentinean grain belt that covers northern Pampas from Buenos Aires and westwards up to the Andes, including but not limited to San Luis , La Pampa, and Cordoba provinces. Where the climate allows the farmers to reap three or four harvests a year, pigeons and dove flocks literally cover the skies and turn daytime into… well, not exactly night, but it can get noticeably darker when a big flock passes over.
Pigeons and especially doves are considered pests, and a serious threat to grain fields. For doves there is no limit, and if you’re not careful with the empties you you might find yourself standing in a pile of spent casings like Charlie Sheen’s hero in “Hot Shots 2”. The province of Cordoba is legendary for pigeon and dove shooting, but many other areas leave nothing to this famous destination
Big game hunting in Argentina
Big-game hunting in Argentina is every bit as great as bird shooting. Red deer is the king of the game animals also there, but there are many other big-game animals, local and introduced, and hunting opportunities range from easy to extra challenging adventures in the desolate foothills of the Andes
Red deer hunting
Red deer have been introduced to Argentina over a century ago. Now the country is one of the best red deer hunting destinations in the world, combining excellent trophy quality with first-rate hunting lodges. Red deer opportunities exist in many of Argentina’s provinces, from the wildest corners of Patagonia to rural areas next to Buenos Aires. It’s typical for Argentinean outfitters to have a fenced area, where they keep their breeding stock, and a wide tract of free range hunting grounds.
When booking a red deer hunt in Argentina , think about what kind of experience you are after. There are a lot of options, from spot-and-stalk hunts in savannah type habitat, to rolling hills that remind one of classic deer stalking in the Scottish Highlands to wooded mountains. For a true wilderness adventure, look for Patagonian hunts in such provinces as Chubut and Neuquén , but bear in mind hunting there is a challenge, and success is far from guaranteed.
Hunting Argentina’s native mammals
Most big-game hunters in Argentina pursue animals that have been introduced there by humans, but there are options to pursue some local fauna, too. Those include brocket deer , white-lipped peccary, and puma. Puma hunting can be on a bait, by stalking, or with a pack of hounds, while brocket deer and the peccary are hunted by still-hunting at feeding areas. When booking a hunt for native species, such as puma , peccary, and brocket deer, make sure with your outfitter whether your trophy can be legally exported. This is not possible in some cases, even though the hunt itself may be perfectly legal.
Other big-game hunting options in Argentina
One introduced species in Argentina that deserves serious attention is the blackbuck . Originally stemming from India, they are not allowed to be hunted within their natural range. However, the Pampas of Argentina are very similar to the highland grasslands of India where the blackbuck originated, and free-range hunting is exciting and challenging. The same can be said about the water buffalo , which feels itself as much at home, and is as ill-tempered and seemingly bulletproof, as in its natural Asian habitats.
While feral sheep and goats are mostly an extra animal to be taken at chance, some outfitters are working on free-range populations of “ Texas Dall ” and “ Patagonian Dall “. Those are “designer breeds” of sheep that combine the white fur of the Dall’s sheep with impressive, Marco Polo type horns; if free ranging populations establish themselves in the Andes, Argentina may gain recognition as a mountain hunting destination as well.
In addition, many outfitters in Argentina offer excellent hunting opportunities for fallow deer , axis deer , mouflon , and wild boar , as well as such exotics as Pere David’s deer and the Balearean Boc .
Best time for hunting in Argentina
A hunting trip in Argentina is possible all year round, but of course some species and locations are best to hunt in a certain period. For red deer this is definitely April, when the Game of Kings have their rut in the Southern Hemisphere. For red stag hunting enthusiasts, that offers a chance to live that wonderful time twice in the year – in the spring in Argentina or New Zealand , and in the fall in the Old World. You can have a good time hunting water buffalo and wild boar throughout the year, while the best time for axis deer and blackbuck is believed to be the southern hemisphere summer, from October to April.
As for birds hunting, waterfowl is best during the Argentine fall and winter, typically from May to August. Doves and pigeons are equally numerous in all times of the year, but the climate of some provinces may be a decisive factor. While central regions such as Cordoba enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year, in the northern, that is, hotter provinces such as Santa Fe , Tucumán , or Santiago del Estero you might want to schedule your trip for the South American winter. The cooler and drier months from April to October work better for hunting and fishing than the wet season in the subtropical climate.
By contrast, in such southern regions as Rio Negro , especially if your outfitter operates at a considerable altitude in the Andes, you might have to deal with cold and snow on late season hunts.
How much does it cost?
Pigeon and dove shooting in Argentina is priced starting at about $300-$400 a day. This in itself is not too expensive, considering that the price includes accommodations in a comfortable lodge and excellent meals with local wines, but it’s not nearly the end of the bill. A substantial extra is ammunition, and we can be talking about a thousand rounds a day and more – don’t forget to factor it in, as well as other items such as tips to personnel, gun rental and/or permits, etc. Waterfowl and upland hunts start at $800-$900 a day, but given a much lower ammo consumption, the total costs end up about the same.
With big-game hunts, a rough estimate is $500 a day plus trophy, which may run from $1,500-$2,500 for a blackbuck to $2,500-$500 for a water buffalo. Red deer hunts start at about $4,000. Mind that some outfitters price their trophy fees according to the size of the antlers, while others go for a flat fee regardless of the trophy size. A gold medal-sized deer may push the price well over $10,000. Shop carefully, in advance, and wait for special promo deals that may bring you “any size” deer at a flat fee, and/or a chance at an extra animal such as fallow deer, blackbuck, or wild boar thrown in.
Travel to Argentina
Most international hunters arrive to Buenos Aires, and then take a local flight to the provincial capital where the hunt will take place, or, if the operation is not far from the capital, to get there in the outfitter’s car. When travelling with arms, it is recommended, if possible, to make your port of entry Cordoba or another provincial capital, as most hunters report that processing of documents is easier and takes less time there.
However, this is not always possible, as most international flights are serviced by Ezeisa Airport (EZE), while most domestic flights go through the Newbery Airport (AEP), which is across town. If you need to change airports, and you most probably will, be sure to allow enough time; a stopover in Buenos Aires is actually a good idea. Most outfitters speak good English, but it’s a good idea to pick up some basic Spanish to communicate with bird boys and for random local interactions. Modern language learning apps are just right for the job.
Citizens of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and the European Union can enter Argentina for stay under 90 days without a visa. Gun import permits are necessary, though. For non-automatic rifles and shotguns it may be possible to acquire the permit on arrival, while semi-automatic weapons are more strictly regulated. Your outfitter will be able to help you navigate through laws and requirements but be sure to ask them in advance. It might be easiest to rent a gun from the outfitters who usually have enough to choose from; if you can shoot well with a regular-stocked Beretta or Browning over/under, that would be the recommended route.
Argentina beyond hunting
First things first: there is fishing . Whether going after the native golden dorado in the mighty rivers of the north, or the introduced brown trout in the clear mountain lakes and streams in the Andes, fishing in Argentina is exciting and totally recommended to any angling enthusiast. Even if you just wouldn’t mind casting a line into some water as a side activity to hunting, explore the fishing opportunities of Argentina before booking your hunting trip.
Argentina is best known worldwide for tango, steaks, and wine, and the reputation is more than deserved. Wine tours, first-rate cuisine in local restaurants, and the night life in Buenos Aires, are second-to-none if you’re into such things. Alternatively, there are numerous opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, whitewater rafting, and even, in the right time of year, mountain skiing. You can admire colonial architecture in the old cities or explore pre-Columbian cultures, or one of the amazing blends of the local and immigrant lifestyle such as the gaucho.
With its rich fauna and diverse landscapes, well-developed hunting industry and numerous other attractions, Argentina should be on every travelling hunter’s list.

We have available an e-brochure! Click here to download it or here to view it online!
Buenos Aires The Start To The Journey
Your journey starts in Buenos Aires city which is the main destination of the international flights to Argentina. From there we could drive to the vast pampas nearby where big herds of blackbuck and axis deer roam in free range or, if bird shooting is your game, we could also drive to the rolling hills of Entre Rios province where we offer the best mixed bag bird hunting of the country including Argentina's highlight: high volume dove shooting near Buenos Aires city.
For those who like Red Stag Hunting, we fly from a domestic airport in dowtown BA to the main big game hunting areas of Argentina: La Pampa (bush hunting) and Patagonia country (mountain hunting) where the abundance and quality of free ranged red stag are amazing.
Red deer were introduced for the very first time in the bush of the province of La Pampa in 1909 and found the perfect environment to thrive to the level of population of the present days. Few years afterwards were taken to Patagonia mountains where they also found a perfect habitat for them. That's why those two regions are the best red stag hunting areas of our country.
Many other big game species have been introduced almost one hundred years ago in those traditional big game hunting areas of Argentina like axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer, water buffalo, Pere David's deer, wild boar, mouflon, wild goat and multihorn ram among some other.
In summary, Argentina offers a great variety of hunting which makes it a prominent place in the hunting world.

Brief History of Hunting Dove in Argentina
According to the Argentine government , doves are official pests because of the crop damage they cause. In the past, farmers would leave poison around their fields to control the dove population in their area. However, local biologists pointed out the consequences of this method, leaving hunting fields poisoned and affecting other animals that consumed the poisoned doves.
Meanwhile, some local Argentineans did not truly have a dove hunting culture, making the pests run rampant. As such, countryside hotels usually serve as home bases for visitors on hunting trips. However, only those hunters with good connections and vast experience were willing to travel 5,000 miles to shoot doves.
Now, with relaxed laws, dedicated hunting lodges , and experienced outfitters, hunters and their parties have more access to one of the world’s most exciting sports hunting experiences. Get started by contacting our representatives at Southern Outfitting. We are dedicated to making your trip one to remember. Contact us today to discuss your next trip of a lifetime!

When to Book a World Class Dove Hunting Trip
Any month of the year is a great time to book a trip for dove hunting in Argentina with Southern Outfitting. Argentina has a surplus volume of doves to shoot, owing to the ideal climate and environment.
However, you might want to consider planning your trip between October, November, December, and February. These months are considered part of the “low season,” not because there are fewer doves to hunt but because the hunting lodges face significantly lower demand. If you book during this time, you’ll have more opportunities to enjoy your entire trip without worrying about other parties in the area.
We offer discounts that are up to 30% off of our regular rates, allowing you to save money in the process.
