  • Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education is a refereed, interdisciplinary quarterly designed to serve the needs of all levels of hospitality and tourism education through discussion issues with the common purpose of educational improvement. The main objective of this periodical is to facilitate scholarly interchange among hospitality and tourism educators, industry practitioners and educators from related disciplines. It is through such interchange that each of us may identify with, interpret and promote the hospitality and tourism profession academically.

Guidelines for Submissions to JHTE

Educators from all segments of the hospitality and tourism field are invited and encouraged to contribute articles for publication in the Journal of Hospitality Tourism & Education. Submissions should be global in scope, giving equal consideration to North America, Europe and the Asian Basin. All submissions, reviews and correspondence is conducted electronically at the following URL address: http://scholarworks.umass.edu/jhte/ .

  • All tables, figures, etc. should be included at the end of the manuscript, and not incorporated into the body of the paper. The number of tables, figures, etc. should be limited to not more than a total of four.
  • Manuscripts submitted as Topic Papers normally range between 15-20 pages (5-6 pages in the Journal). However, the length of an article should be dictated by its subject and audience. Teaching Notes and Communications and Perspectives and Opinion pieces are typically much shorter in length.
  • In the electronic submission process through Scholarworks, authors will be asked for the article title; the authors’ full names, titles and designations; full mailing address; telephone; FAX; and email addresses. In addition, authors will be required to provide a 50-100 word abstract but with no author identification. The posted submission should begin the text of the article with the article title only at the top of the page. Be sure to omit any pages with author information in the manuscript submitted for review.
  • When appropriate, all papers should include a thorough literature review of the topic it covers.
  • The co-editors strongly advise that you study two or three back issues of the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education before submitting your work.
  • American Psychological Association (APA) style is used for articles submitted for publication. Submission Guidelines for Manuscripts: Please submit your manuscript in MS WORD format.
  • All manuscripts considered for publication must be typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins.
  • It is assumed that the works submitted to the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education have not been submitted or published elsewhere, unless the author indicates otherwise. The Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education ordinarily assumes the responsibility of obtaining the copyright for works it publishes under a publication agreement at the time of submission.
  • Manuscripts are reviewed both by the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education’s co-editors and by reviewers from the Board of Consulting Editors. Evaluation is performed under a “double-blind” system, whereby the author’s identity is not revealed to the reviewers and the author is not apprised of the reviewers’ identities. Reviewers’ comments are shared with authors when they may be of use. The entire review process averages five to six weeks.

A regular feature in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education is Topic Papers. These are full-length, comprehensive and rigorous pieces dealing with pedagogical issues for the general I-CHRIE readership. Topic Papers may include reports of empirical research or conceptual pieces impacting on hospitality and tourism education. Most of the Topic Papers fall into one of the following Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education departments: Course and Curriculum, International Hospitality Education, Classroom Applications, Industry and Education, Faculty/Student Development and Program Administration.

Criteria for evaluation include:

  • Appropriateness for the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education .
  • Significance in contributing to hospitality and tourism education.
  • Technical adequacy.
  • Logical organization and thoroughness of ideas.
  • Clarity of presentation.

Submission and Inquiries: All materials submitted for publication are refereed by members of the editorial review board or recognized experts in the field. The co-editors welcome the submission of suitable materials for publication and will be pleased to discuss proposals for papers. How to publish in this journal

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.
