For many, the Kokoda Track is a fitting reminder of the Australian Army's heroic battles in 1942 to defend Port Moresby, in extraordinary conditions, from the advancing forces of the Japanese. In the company of our expert guide, we trek across the geographical heart of Papua New Guinea following trails from the tropical rainforests to the rarified climes of the Owen Stanley Ranges. At night we stay in secluded jungle camps close to traditional villages in some of the most remote regions of PNG. We take our time, allowing plenty of opportunity to embrace the history and local culture as well as meet the physical demands of this rugged track. It takes nine days to cover the 96km trail - offering tremendous rewards and a feeling of accomplishment as we complete the trek between the township of Kokoda and the highlands.

The Experience

Walking the Kokoda track has become an important experience for every Australian. The physical and mental challenges of the Track, including an understanding of the courage and sacrifice shown by Australia’s diggers, offer a life-changing experience for every trekker.

The story of Kokoda – the heroic defense of our nation against a powerful foreign invader – is finally gaining its rightful place at the forefront of the Australian consciousness. However, one can only begin to understand what really took place on that remote jungle pathway during WWII by actually trekking over its arduous course.

After the war, the Kokoda legend lay dormant for six decades, during which time the New Guinean jungle reclaimed many of its historic sites. After years of painstaking research on the track itself, and with the aid of the fast-thinning ranks of both Australian and Japanese veterans, Bill James has played an important part in uncovering the ‘lost battlefields’ of Kokoda. His publication, Field Guide to the Kokoda Track, is regarded as the ‘trekkers bible’. Bill acts as a historical advisor for On Track Expeditions and has passed his extensive knowledge of the campaign on to our trek.

At On Track Expeditions we have Kokoda Expeditions that walk in either direction as there is no ‘correct’ way to walk the Kokoda Trail. The direction will be clearly noted in the itinerary when booking.

Walking North

Upon arrival at the airport we will be transferred to the Kokoda Trail Hotel on the picturesque Sogeri Plateau, just outside of Port Moresby. A trek briefing will take place before a group dinner.

We make an early start and travel by bus to Owers’ Corner, the start point of the trek. Here we meet the porters who will accompany the group for the first time. We descend to the Goldie River and then climb Imita, the first ridgeline of the Range. It was at this point where the Australians, camped on the ridge, turned the tide in the battle and forced the Japanese, on the opposing ridgeline at Ioribaiwa, to retreat. We descend into the Ua-Ule creek valley for lunch and then we climb to Ioribaiwa Village for camp.

The morning starts with a climb to the top of Ioribaiwa Ridge. It was here that the Japanese were forced to retreat through exhaustion and starvation, despite being within sight of the ocean and the lights of Port Moresby, their ultimate goal.

After crossing Ofi Creek we make camp at the village of Nauro, perched on a hillside in the Maguli Range.

descend to the Goldie River and then climb Imita, the first ridgeline of the Range.

We make our way through the Brown River valley, where the main crossing provides the most pleasant swimming hole on the track. We then climb up and over ‘the Wall’ to Menari, one of the largest villages in the Range.

We ascend Brigade Hill, the site of one of the most famous battles of the campaign.

It was here that a night-time Japanese flanking manoeuvre saw Brigadier Potts cut off from the three Battalions under his command. The 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions managed to regain the Australian lines, but the 2/27th Battalion, having been in the battle for only one day, became lost in the jungle for three arduous weeks before finally re-emerging in the foothills near Port Moresby.

We pass through the village of Efogi before making camp at Naduri.

We make our way up and over Mount Bellamy, the highest part of the track with an altitude of 2100 meters.

In this area we see some of the track’s more interesting geographical features: the high altitude ‘moss forests’ and the Myola Lakes, huge dry lakebeds that served as important dropping grounds for Australian supplies.

We make camp at Templeton’s Crossing, named after ‘Uncle’ Sam Templeton, Captain of B Company 39th Battalion, a popular and courageous officer who lost his life in the early stages of the battle.

We pass through Eora Creek village. Now abandoned, the wartime village was a regimental aid post during the Australian withdrawal, made famous by footage from Damien Parer’s Academy-Award winning documentary ‘Kokoda Front Line’.

We cross to the other side of the range on a path less traveled to experience the beautiful village of Abuari, where the 2/16th Battalion held off a Japanese flanking movement while the main battle went ahead at Isurava.

Welcomed by the local families Abuari we experience true village life and explore this breath taking location. A tour of the school, gardens and church are included in this great day.

We head off a little later today with a river crossing down at Eora Creek. We pass through the village of Alola and make camp at the Isurava Memorial Site.

Dawn service at the Isurava Memorial. At Isurava we will hear how the 2/14th Infantry Battalion of the AIF joined the beleaguered 39th in the fight against the Japanese.

The breathtaking Isurava Memorial is testament to the courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the diggers. We then descend the western ridge of the Eora Creek valley, passing through the fields of choko vines to the village of Deniki.

From here it is just a short descent into the Yodda Valley, though the rubber plantations to the village of Kokoda and the end of the track. We spend the night at Kokoda.

We fly back to Port Moresby on a morning charter flight from Kokoda. We visit the Bomana War Cemetery and have a final group dinner at our hotel in the Port Moresby CBD.

After a nice rest, breakfast, swim in the pool and a hot shower we are transported to Port Moresby International Airport and depart this amazing country knowing we have explored the history, culture, people and Kokoda Track.

Walking South

Fly from Australia to Port Moresby. Overnight Moresby Hotel.

Upon arrival into Port Moresby we will visit Bomana War Cemetery and then be transferred to our hotel.

A trek briefing will take place before a group dinner and a relaxing night before an early start.

We take a morning flight from Port Moresby to Kokoda.

We visit the battle site at Kokoda station, where the 39th Battalion made its first stand against the Japanese. In the afternoon we start the track ascending to our campsite at Deniki, in the foothills of the Yodda Valley.

We climb into the Owen Stanley Range and traverse the western side of the Eora Creek Valley through the fields of choko vines.

We pass through present-day Isurava village and on tothe Isurava Battle Site. The breathtaking Isurava Memorial is testament to the courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the diggers.

This morning starts with a stop a Con’s Rock and then to Alola. A steep decent to Eora Creek and a steeper climb to the beautiful village of Abuari on the eastern side of the range.

Having arrived in only a couple hours, the rest of the day is spent in the school with the children, exploring the village or swimming at their breathtaking waterfall – today is a great day to understand village life and be with the locals.

Local foods will be cooked for lunch giving everyone a chance to relax and enjoy the jungle lifestyle.

A lesser-worn track will guide us to Eora Creek Village, now abandoned but a lovely swimming spot.

Now back on the Kokoda Track we continue on until camp. We make camp at Templeton’s Crossing, named after ‘Uncle’ Sam Templeton, Captain of B Company 39th Battalion.

We make camp at the Naduri with its nice high outlook over the villages below.

We traverse a steep creek valley to reach the village of Efogi, the largest on the track with close to 1000 residents.

We ascend Brigade Hill, the site of one of the most famous battles of the campaign. It was here that a night-time Japanese flanking manoeuvre saw Brigadier Potts cut off from the three Battalions under his command.

We descend into the village of Menari and make camp.

We climb out of Menari and descend into the Brown River valley before climing again to the village of Nauro, perched on a hillside in the Maguli Range.

We climb up and over the Maguli Range and descend to Ofi Creek. We then climb up to the top of Ioribaiwa Ridge. It was here that the Japanese were forced to retreat through exhaustion and starvation, despite being within sight of the ocean and the lights of Port Moresby, their ultimate goal. We camp at Ua-Ule Creek.

We climb up and over Imita, the final ridge before Port Moresby.

We cross the Goldie River and finish the track at Owers’ Corner, that’s right, you have completed the Kokoda Track!!

We return to Port Moresby by bus and check in to our hotel and have a final group dinner.

After a nice rest, breakfast, swim in the pool and a hot shower we are transported to Port Moresby International Airport and depart this amazing country knowing we have explored the history, culture, people and Kokoda Track

02 Port Moresby - Deniki

Our adventure begins with an early 30min flight from Port Moresby to Popondetta. Using the same road the Japanese Imperial Force used, our 3 hour transit will take us across the incredible wide Kumusi River, finally reaching the heart of Kokoda Village .

We'll pause for a quick lunch, then immerse yourself in history at the informative onsite war museum, followed by a reflective walk across the sacred grounds of the Kokoda battlefield . Meet our expert guide and expedition support team. These professionals are dedicated to setting up camp, managing logistics, and carrying our essential supplies, such as food, tents, and safety equipment ensuring ensuring your trek is both secure and memorable.

Visible from Kokoda village Deniki awaits. Just a 3hr walk, you will pass through rubber plantations via the charming village of Hoi, before a challenging 45-minute ascent to Deniki. Refresh with a shower, have dinner, and retire early under the stars.

03 Deniki - Alola

With the new days light, we break camp post a nourishing breakfast and head towards Alola. Our path leads us to the sacred grounds of the Isurava Battlefield , a site of profound historical significance, where we will take a pause for lunch and pay respects at the Memorial.

The Battle Of Isurava occurred between August 26-31, 1942 and was a pivotal conflict in the broader Kokoda Track Campaign . It was this location where Private Bruce Kingsbury was killed and later awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for his actions.

In remembrance of the 60th anniversary, the memorial was inaugurated in August 2002, marking the fierce four-day conflict that this serene landscape once witnessed. The Isurava Memorial, commanding a view over the valley, stands out with its four granite pillars, embodying the attributes of Courage , Endurance , Mateship , and Sacrifice —tenets that capture the spirit of those who fought on this terrain.

The journey continues with a descents and ascents out of, as we traverse the Abuari valley. Our path meanders us up to the village of Alola. This vantage point offers a magnificent view, directly across the valley to Abuari Village.

04 Alola - Templetons

Embracing the day's challenge, we rise before dawn to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures. Our path leads us through Alola village, where the day's early light breaks across the valley.

Traversing the valley in awe, the Kokoda Track unveils its spectacular views, as we pass a procession of stunning waterfalls. These natural wonders direct us down narrow winding paths, to the bottom of the valley, where we pause and replenish water bottles.

Kokoda is a rhythm of ascents mirroring each descent. We spend most of the day climbing at a steady pace, finally reaching Templeton's Crossing , (also known as Dump 1) situated at the base of Mt. Bellamy.

More than physical exertion; this sector is rich in biodiversity, steeped in history, with countless points of interest. There's also ample opportunity to forge connections with your fellow trekkers and the porter team , whose stories and support are as integral to this trek as the steps we take.

05 Templetons - Kagi

The morning air is crisp and invigorating, as we vigorous ascent out of the enchanting Templeton's Crossing . We ready ourselves for the challenge of climbing to the summit of Mt. Bellamy, reaching an elevation of 2,190 meters.

As we rise through the terrain, if the fog canopy lifts in time, we might be afforded the breath-taking view across the Kokoda Gap . Take a moment to marvel at the sweeping beauty of the landscape, an awe inspiring vista that affirms the grandeur of Papua New Guinea's natural environment.

Veering slightly from the Kokoda Trail , our expedition leads us to Myola 1. This natural wonder, set amidst the dense rainforest, holds both ecological marvel and historical significance, a site where nature and time converge.

The remainder of our hike is marked by a gradual descent along the mountain's ridge lines, with intermittent pauses, taking in the breathtaking scenery. These pauses in our journey not only offer respite but also allow us to pinpoint the location of Kagi in the distance.

Our descent will see us navigating down ridge lines, with opportunities to pause and take in the spectacular views. The sight of Kagi's gardens signals our approach's end, as we are warmly welcomed in the heart of the village.

Sabbath Day Church Service

06 Sabbath Rest Day

Honouring the sacred Sabbath Day reflects our deep respect for the spiritual and cultural practices of our Kokoda porter team. Out of respect and cultural exchange, you'll be invited to join a village church service in the morning. This is a profound opportunity to witness their devotional practices, to be moved by their harmonious, angelic singing—an enriching experience that we highly recommend and one that offers insight into the heart of their community.

As the day unfolds, the Kagi village becomes a vibrant hub of connection. You'll have the delightful opportunity to mingle with the local people, engage in friendly games with exuberant children. You’ll also have the opportunity to venture on an excursion to a spectacular Kokoda Trail natural wonder nearby, a refreshing escape to witness the beauty that nature has sculpted here.

Alternatively, embrace the leisurely pace of the day. Utilise the pause in our journey for personal reflection, tend to any trek necessities, and to recharge your spirit. This respite is an ideal time to recharge both physically and mentally, ensuring you are fully prepared for the adventures that lie ahead on the Kokoda Track .

07 Kagi - Menari

We bid farewell to Kagi and descend to the creek bed. A strenuous climb up we reach reach the twin villages of Efogi 1 and Efogi 2. Take the opportunity to sample and purchase fresh, local fruit—a sweet, juicy reprieve.

Our passage through the Efogi villages gives way to what seems a relentless ascent up a sun-drenched ridge-line, with the humidity settling upon us like an unwelcome companion.

We soon reach the historic site of Brigade Hill. It was here that the poignant Battle of Mission Ridge-Brigade Hill unfolded from September 6-9, 1942. As part of the Kokoda Campaign , this location bore witness to intense combat and each fallen Australian is remembered by a stick adorned with a poppy.

In this contemplative space, we take a moment to honor the past, to learn of the harrowing events that transpired, and to reflect on the sacrifices made. Leaving Brigade Hill, we carry with us a profound respect and a heightened sense of gratitude. We soon arrive in Menari for the night.

08 Menari - Nauro

As we move off, our path weaves through the community, crossing quaint streams, the gentle elevation provides an excellent warm-up.

The true test of the Kokoda Track soon makes its presence known as we face a steep ascent out of Menari. Calculated, deliberate steps are the key to success for the climb, finally the saddle. Its hard not to feel a sense of achievement as everyones pulses race.

Descending the saddle presents its own set of challenges, compared to the climb. Our journey leads us to the Brown River , offering a short respite where the adventurous can indulge in a bit of river surfing.

Pressing on, the Kokoda Trail biodiversity continues to unfold. A vast swamp waits, with its complex network of wetlands. We navigate this delicate ecosystem, traversing over bridges, logs, and additional rivers.

The final approach to Nauro Village can feel like an eternity, with numerous false peaks playing tricks on your determination. But as the distinctive orange hue of the earth begins to dominate the landscape, we arrive at Nauro Village.

09 Nauro - Wa-ule Creek

The day's trek begins with an immediate ascent. With each step, we're introduced to a tapestry of geological wonders—from the open grasslands to the rugged reaches of the Maguli Range summit. The diversity underfoot is as striking as the vistas that surround us.

The echoes of history resonate deeply here as we come across remnants of the Kokoda Campaign —trenches and foxholes, silent witnesses to the intense battles fought over 75 years ago. These scars on the landscape offer a poignant reminder of the tenacity and struggles of the soldiers.

Navigating the descent to Ofi Creek demands our utmost attention. Careful foot placement brings us to a well-earned lunch break, a pause in the shadows of history.

Departing Ofi Creek with renewed vigor. Our route crisscrosses the same river up to a dozen times, leading us to the enchanting Wa-Ule Creek campsite. Take up natural invitation to refresh in the waterholes. Enjoy your last Kokoda Trail dinner as you witness the delicate dance of fireflies.

Our Kokoda Trail adventure reaches its climax on this final day of trekking. We continue to navigate river crossings, each step bringing us closer to the daunting base of the infamous Imita Ridge . Here, we pause, readying ourselves for the arduous climb. Take a breath, set your pace, and ascend to the crest, where a plaque recounts the poignant history of this place.

The descent on the other side is a foray through mud, retracing the steps of history down the storied Golden Stairs . Our path leads to the majestic Goldie River. Here, we embrace the water—wading through the currents, waist-deep or more, our clothes authenticating your Kokoda Experience.

The final ascent is a testament to the Kokoda transformative power. We weave through a canopy offering brief respite, gathering ourselves for the last sun-drenched push to the finish. As we step through the Kokoda Track arches at Owers Corner, a surge of elation mixes with a kaleidoscope of emotions—a triumphant finale to an epic passage.

A celebratory quick lunch and refreshing cold drink await, shared with the entire team, cementing the bonds formed over the trek. An evening of camaraderie, laughter, and shared stories, a fitting end to our remarkable journey together on the Kokoda Track .

Where Is The Kokoda Track?

The Kokoda Track , a narrow path winding through the magnificent Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, connects the north to the south of this rugged terrain. This track, steeped in history, has been a part of the local landscape for millennia, utilised by the indigenous landowners. Its significance was further underscored in 1899 when Henry Hamilton Stuart-Russell conducted the first European survey of the area, notably crossing the Kokoda Gap.

The track gained international prominence during World War II as the site of the intense Kokoda Campaign . This critical conflict saw fierce combat between the Imperial Japanese Army and Australian forces, at a time when Papua New Guinea was under Australian jurisdiction. The campaign fostered a remarkable camaraderie between Australian soldiers and the indigenous 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels' , creating a bond that has echoed through history.

In recent times, the Ko koda Trail has emerged as a sought-after destination for avid adventurers.

It offers a deep dive into a world rich in cultural heritage, historical significance, and extraordinary biodiversity. It attracts those keen on experiencing and exploring a prehistoric untouched landscape, that has played a pivotal role in shaping regional history and is one of the last frontiers on earth.

How hard is it to walk the Kokoda Track?

There is no doubt about it, walking the Kokoda Track is difficult. If walking around the block is 1/10, you can expect the Kokoda Track to be a minimum of 7/10 and up to 10/10 in places. The good news is that normal everyday people do it, so its more than achieveable, you simply need to comit the time and effort to reach your goal.

How long does it take to walk the Kokoda Track?

The traditional Kokoda Track itinerary will have you on the track for eight days. However, if you are feeling super fit you can take the fast Kokoda option and get through it in six days. Although the track can be completed quicker, most operators dont offer tours shorter than six days. The quicker you do the trail, the less you see, the less you experience and the risk of injury increases.

Best time of year to do Kokoda Trail?

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a wet and dry season similar to northern Australia. Therefore, the track is typically closed to tourists between December and mid April which is considered the wet season. ANZAC Day (April) is a popular time with many tours booked out with the track, camp areas and key battle sites being very busy. If you want to be part of an ANZAC experience in a remote location then an ANZAC Day tour might be for you. Beyond that, anytime throughout the trekking season is the best time to do the Kokoda Track. You can experience rain and mud at anytime, so it really comes down to your availibility. Obviously airfares are generally a little cheaper outside of school holidays if you are trying to save a few dollars.

How do I book Kokoda Trail?

Simply by booking thorugh us, will score you a  FREE Kokoda Track Field Guide and other track essentials. Choose the Kokoda Tour of your choice, pick a date and book. Should you have a group of 8 or more, you might be able to customise your Kokoda Tour date.

Can you do Kokoda without a guide?

Trekking the Kokoda Track must be undertaken with a licenced tour operator for a range of reasons. The Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) does not encourage trekkers to walk without a tour operator because: the track can vary and be unclear at times, it is not safe for an individual to be travelling solo and a solo traveller brings very little benifit to the local communities.

Who won the battle of Kokoda?

After speaking with many veterans the fought in PNG and veterans that have fought in modern conflicts, the common response to this question is, there are no winners in war. In terms of the battle for Kokoda itself, there were multiple engagments between the Australians and the Japanese whereby the Japanese took the ground and the Australians took back the ground. You can learn more about the specifics of the battle of Kokoda alue="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda" label="" type="url" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda" target="_blank" data-runtime-url="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kokoda">here.

What happened at the Kokoda Track in WW2?

A very difficult question to sum up in just a few sentences because so much happened on the Kokoda Track its unlikely we will ever understand and capture everything the happened. In short, the Kokoda Track marks the location of one of the most important and understated battles during the Second World War and undoubtley in Australian military history. Australian soldiers fought back and advancing Japanese force in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and pushed them back across the PNG mountains. You can read more indepth information about the Kokoda Campagin here.

Where did the Kokoda Track start and end?

To be specific, the Kokoda Track begins at Owers Corner which is the bottom or the southern side of the Track. It spans a length of 96kms traversing the beautiful PNG landscape and finishes at the northern end, slightly before Kokoda Village at a place called Kokoda Station.

Kokoda Trail Tour: Trekking the Path of Heroes

Have you ever imagined tracing the steps of heroes, walking through lush rainforests, crossing rugged mountain terrain, all while reflecting on a significant chapter of World War II history? This is exactly what the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea offers.

Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or new to adventure, this trail is more than just a hike; it’s a journey that stays with you long after the trek is over. Let’s explore what makes this Kokoda trail tour an unforgettable adventure.

Kokoda Trail: What To Expect and Why It’s Special

The Kokoda Trail is an historic and challenging 96-kilometre track located in Papua New Guinea. It’s famous for its role during World War II, where Australian and Japanese forces engaged in a series of gruelling battles in 1942.

The Historical Significance

Walking this trail is like stepping back in time. It’s here that Australian troops, alongside the Papua New Guinean ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’, endured extreme conditions to defend their homeland. Memorials and battle sites along the trail, such as Isurava Battlefield and Brigade Hill, offer poignant reminders of the past.

The Natural Wonders

Beyond its historical significance, the Kokoda Trail is a showcase of incredible natural beauty. Trekkers can expect to navigate through diverse ecosystems, from mist-shrouded jungles to alpine grasslands. The trail offers a chance to witness unique wildlife, including exotic bird species and colourful orchids. River crossings and waterfalls add to the adventure, while the stunning views over the valleys and mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to the journey.

The Cultural Experience

The trail is not just a journey through nature and history but also a deep dive into the rich culture of Papua New Guinea. Along the route, trekkers encounter local villages and communities, gaining insight into the traditional lifestyles of the indigenous people. These interactions provide a unique opportunity to learn about the customs, beliefs, and local ways of life, adding another layer to the Kokoda experience.

What To Expect

Trekkers walking on the Kokoda Trail should prepare for a physically demanding adventure. The trail is known for its challenging terrain, including steep ascents and descents, uneven paths, and unpredictable weather conditions. It requires a good level of fitness, determination, and resilience. However, the sense of accomplishment upon completing the trail, coupled with the deep connections formed with history, nature, and culture, makes this trail a truly special and unforgettable experience.

On the Kokoda Track

DIY Trek or Joining a Tour: Which Is Better?

The Kokoda Trail tour is a challenging and deeply rewarding experience, but when it comes to choosing between a tour company and a DIY (Do It Yourself) adventure, there are compelling reasons why opting for a reputable tour company, like ours , is the superior choice.

Expertise and Local Knowledge

One of the standout advantages of trekking with a tour company is the wealth of expertise and local knowledge they bring to the table. Experienced guides who are intimately familiar with the terrain, weather conditions, and cultural nuances of the region can make a world of difference. They can ensure your safety, provide valuable insights into the trail’s history, and offer a deeper connection to the local communities you encounter along the way.

Safety First

This trail can be demanding, and safety should always be a top priority. Tour companies prioritise safety through rigorous training, first-aid knowledge, and well-defined emergency protocols. They also provide essential equipment, like satellite phones and medical supplies, giving trekkers peace of mind in case of unexpected situations.

Logistics and Support

Trekking the Kokoda Trail independently can be logistically complex. Tour companies handle all the arrangements, from permits and transportation to accommodation and meals. This means you can focus on the journey itself without worrying about the nitty-gritty details. Additionally, tour companies often have support teams that can assist with carrying equipment and setting up camp, lightening the load and enhancing the overall experience.

Cultural Engagement

This trail is also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich cultures and traditions of Papua New Guinea. Tour companies facilitate meaningful cultural interactions by arranging visits to local villages, schools, and communities. This allows trekkers to gain a deeper understanding of the region and its people, enriching the overall experience.

Group Camaraderie

Trekking with a tour group creates a sense of camaraderie and shared achievement. It’s a chance to bond with fellow trekkers, draw inspiration from their experiences, and provide mutual support during challenging moments. This group dynamic can be a powerful motivator to keep you going when the going gets tough.

Before dinner your trek leader will give a short presentation covering safety, culture and expectations and do last-minute pack adjustments. We will then have dinner together before getting an early night ready for our morning departure.

Day 2: Good Water Camp – Ofi Creek. 13km (B L D)

After breakfast and a brief, we will say goodbye to the locals and continue our climb up the Golden Stairs to Imita Ridge where the gallant Australians were ordered to make their last stand against the Japanese. We can move a short distance along the ridge where there are still defensive positions visible after 75 years. From here we will descend down into Ua-Ule creek where we will criss-cross the creek a number of times before commencing the climb up Ioribaiwa Ridge where we find the furthest point of the Japanese advance. Here we can take a break and again discover some visible defences from both the Australians and Japanese. We will now descend into Ofi creek where a successful ambush was set and initiated by the Australians during their tactical withdrawal using food stores as bait for the starving Japanese for our night stop.

Day 4: Agulogo Village – Efogi 1 Village. 15km (B L D)

Our day starts with a walk up ‘the wall’ which is an appropriate description of a steep climb which takes you to a lookout where you will experience views over Menari and Mt Victoria on a clear day. We now descend into the large village of Menari which is famous for the 39th Battalion parade where they were addressed by their Commander Lt Col Ralph Honner and congratulated on their efforts. Here we will have the opportunity to walk around the village and meet some of the locals and see some war time ordinance. We then have a steep incline up to the famous battle grounds of Brigade Hill. There is a memorial here and some stakes in the ground where Australians were buried and later relocated to Bomana War Cemetery. We will stop here for a short time and pay our respects to the fallen with a simple service. We descend into present day Efogi Village for the night where we are about halfway through our journey.

Day 5: Efogi 1 Village - Bombers Camp. 13km (B L D)

Leaving Efogi Village we have a climb up to Efogi 2 Village. Here we will stop for a short break and inspect the memorial constructed by Nishimura for his Japanese comrades he left behind during the Brigade Hill battle. We once again descend down into Efogi River then back up into the village of Naduri where the last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel was living prior to his death in 2013. We can inspect his memorial and also have a look at a traditional tree house built by the locals. We will then continue on until we reach Bombers camp, our stop for the night. We will leave our packs at the camp for a nice easy walk to Myola lakes which was a vital supply drop zone during the Kokoda campaign, then back to Bombers for the evening. Put on the warm and woollies for a cool night sleep..

Day 6: Bombers Camp - Templetons Crossing. 10km (B L D)

Leaving Bombers Camp, we will head through the Moss forest making our way up to the highest point of the track. We then continue onto the Kokoda Gap and then down to Dump 1 where we are refreshed by a swim and some smoko before continuing to our Campsite at Templeton's Crossing named after Captain Sam Templeton who was one of the first to be killed during the early stages of the Kokoda Campaign. Here we will find the graves of the 31 Australians who fell during the battle of Templeton’s Crossing during the Australian advance. The fallen were later relocated to Bomana War Cemetery. Our campsite tonight is beside the raging Eora Creek.

Day 7: Templeton’s Crossing - Isurava. 13km (B L D)

Today we leave Templeton’s crossing and make our way to the Eora Creek spur. This is one of the positions where the battle of Eora creek was conducted. There are still visible signs of the Australians defensive positions, the most predominant being a possible Australian mortar position where we will find a recently dug up cache of mortars and grenades. We will continue down the spur into Eora creek where we can inspect some remaining remnants of Australian and Japanese equipment left after the battle. Leaving Eora Creek, we start climbing again and have a short stop to inspect the Japanese positions on the opposing side of Eora Creek. Here we will find some well-preserved Japanese trenches and the site of the Japanese mountain gun and mortar positions which caused havoc amongst the Australians while they were trying to cross Eora Creek. We will then continue on to the village of Alola for lunch. After lunch it is a small walk to inspect Con's Rock and onto Isurava Memorial where we will camp for the night.

Day 8: Isurava - Kokoda. 15km (B L D)

This morning we will learn about the battle of Isurava with time to inspect the site where Bruce Kingsbury won the Victoria Cross, the only one awarded during the campaign. After a service at the Isurava monument, we will continue on to Isurava Village and on a downhill stretch where we will walk through many native gardens and into the village of Deniki. Here we can stop and look out over Kokoda and its’ airstrip. We continue down and into the beautiful village of Hoi for lunch and a swim. After lunch we have a 5km flat walk towards Kokoda to walk under the arches and the completion of the 96km trek. We will then sit down for some celebratory dinner and drinks and tell stories, reflecting on our 96km journey. This is where we will have the opportunity to thank our local hosts and exchange gifts and say a few words to thank them for their great work.

Olly, the Director of Adventure Bound Tours, was fortunate enough to be selected to join an RSL-run Kokoda trip back in 2012. It was on this journey that he met Stanley and forged a strong relationship with him and his family. Olly returned to Papua New Guinea and assisted in helping establish Stanley with his own business, Kokoda Logistics. Olly is now partnered with Stanley and is dedicated to supporting Stanley and his family through providing Adventure Tourism and much needed funds to his village of Menari located on the Kokoda Track.

Stanley Mado

Stanley Mado

Stanley is our Local Head Guide and the Director of Kokoda Logistics; our local logistic support company. He is responsible for ensuring that all logistical requirements are met in PNG before each tour, which is no small feat.

Stanley is from the Village of Menari and has been taking trekker’s across the Kokoda Track since 2001. Stanley says he has "lost count" of how many Track crossings he has made.

Stanley is well known and respected in all of the communities along the track and his efforts to ensure that trekkers have an unparalleled Kokoda Track experience is something to be admired. Having trekked the track over a long period, Stanley has a good understanding of the Kokoda Campaign and we are privileged to have Stanley on the Adventure Bound Team...

"Im so proud to be Papua new Guinean, and be part of this friends whom I met, who come from different parts of da world just to xperience, and see how it was like during da war here in kokoda. Thanks 4 choosing Adventure Bound Tours..love u all..."

Freddy

Freddy is the Adventure Bound Head Cook and is from the village of Alola on the Kokoda Track. He has been providing nutrition to the trekkers along the track for years and is a highly sought after cook.

Freddy will surprise you with the food he can provide using only the simplest of cooking utensils, a cooking pot and fire. He has a good understanding of the nutritional needs that a trekker requires on such a grueling journey and understands the age old term that an army marches on its belly.

Freddy cooks for every meal and has a small team of helpers to carry the food and ensure the food is cooked on time and is adequate for even the hungriest trekker.

Mace 'Benno' Bennett

Mace 'Benno' Bennett

Mace (Benno)Bennett, and Olly, (Chook) first met in Iraq in 2003 where they both served in the Australian army. Mace grew up on a small property in south west Queensland with 5 siblings which gave him an early opportunity to demonstrate and understand the practical aspects of life’s challenges. At the age of 17 Benno followed in the footsteps of his family by becoming the 3rd generation to join the Australian Army. As a young army apprentice the Defence gave him not only combat and field skills, they also trained him as an Electrician. After 4 years within Defence he was deployed with Special operations to Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of Special Operations Task Group. Having completed 3 tours of active duty in the Middle East he accepted promotion and was posted back to Queensland. Once back in his home state he was immediately redeployed to East Timor. After 10yrs within the regular army Benno then transferred to the Army Reserve where he currently remains. Life after Defence lead him in pursuit of business where he was self employed for 8 yrs before becoming a permanent firefighter in the little coastal town of Bowen.

Benno has joined Olly on many adventures over the years, including their very first time across Kokoda, Vanuatu, Everest Base Camp and many more local sorties. Both Olly and Benno have distinguished military records and have discovered a passion for the retelling of our ANZAC history. As soldiers they have a unique insight into the life and tactics of a soldier. Not only can they give detailed accounts of historic battle fields, but they can give you, personal experience, courage, endurance and sacrifice which are the corner stones of the ANZAC legend. These values, and the drive for adventure, has led Benno to be an essential and vibrant member of the Adventure Bound Team.

Travel documents

  • Please bring a copy of all airline tickets and travel insurance documents with you for the duration of the trip.
  • Ensure documents are water proofed.
  • To enter PNG, a passport valid for six months beyond the date of planned departure is required.
  • Take a photocopy of the photo page of your passport and keep it in a separate area in case of a lost passport.
  • All Australians are required to apply for a visa to enter PNG for your Kokoda trek.
  • As at January 2020 you are required to apply for an evisa online before entry to PNG and you cannot obtain a visa on arrival at Jacksons Airport, Port Moresby.
  • Travel Insurance
  • You are required to organise your own travel insurance and provide proof of document to Adventure Bound prior to departure.
  • The policy should cover the following; change in airline reservations, medical expenses, lost baggage, lost passports, air tickets, personal papers, and lost money. You need to specifically state to your insurance company that you will be trekking across the Kokoda Track. It needs to be possible to claim while in PNG.
  • Bring a small amount of extra cash for purchasing of local foods and ornaments along the Kokoda Track. An amount of 300Kina is appropriate.
  • Carry some small denominations because the locals will not have change to give you.

Equipment Carriage

It is very important to select the correct gear and equipment prior to embarking on your trek to Kokoda. I have put together a check list that you should consider prior to purchasing items. All of these items I have used during years of trekking and consider them to be the best equipment for me, however; all people are different and trial and error tends to be the only way to find the best equipment for the individual, but this can be expensive. The only way to assess your equipment is to use it as frequently as possible prior to your trip, during training, which will allow you to test its durability and comfort.

Here is a check list and some tips for you to research equipment, to make sure that you do not overspend, and that you buy the correct equipment that is suitable for the tropical environment.

Adventure Bound strongly advises the hire of a personal porter. This makes the journey more enjoyable, decreases the likelihood of injury and puts money back into the economy.

  • Adventure Bound will supply a loaned pack to each trekker with a 75 litre capacity. If you elect to carry your own pack, please ensure that it is at least 75L and is a hiking pack and not a travel pack which is not suitable for multi day hikes.
  • If you hire a porter, a day pack is required for some personal items such as water, snacks, camera and sandals (for creek crossings).

Waterproofing

  • As most of you know, the Kokoda Trail is in the tropics and therefore receives a substantial amount of rainfall every year. As such there is a need to ensure that all equipment is waterproofed so that you have something dry to wear, sleep in, and that your food is not spoiled by water.
  • A waterproof pack cover is the first line of defence from the rain when it comes to water ingress into your pack. I also use the dry bags to individually store items inside my pack such as snacks, clothing, sleeping gear and electrical items such as cameras. This also helps to organise the items in my pack. You can even purchase different coloured dry bags for easy reference.
  • Dry bags are also a good method of storing wet, stinky or contaminated items that you want isolated from the rest of your equipment to prevent cross contamination such as dirty socks, undies and clothing.
  • Dry bags are a relatively cheap option for keeping your equipment dry and they can be reused over and over again.
  • If you are on a budget, a cheap option is to water proof food etc by using Ziploc bags and to water proof clothing and sleeping gear with garbage bags. Another cheaper option is to purchase one big dry bag, that fills the main compartment in your pack, and place all of your items inside (except drinking water).
  • I recommend the Sea to Summit range of dry bags, they make all shapes and coloured dry bags which will allow good pack organisation and will keep your gear dry. They also have Event Compression dry bags which allow you to keep your compressible items such as clothing and sleeping bag water proof and small.

Water Carriage

  • The Kokoda Trail is in mountainous country in the tropics of PNG. You will be working very hard walking up and down hills and will be required to maintain hydration.
  • There are a lot of creeks crossing the track so there is plenty of fresh water for resupply. The fresh water is generally ok to drink however ask a guide. A general rule is to purify the water with Puri Tabs or Steri tabs prior to consumption for safety sake, as a stomach bug will see you off the track.
  • There are a few different methods of carrying water but on the Kokoda Trail I recommend the use of a water bladder system because they are user friendly and can be utilised on the move without having to dig a water bottle out. They also compress down to nothing when they are empty which will save space inside your pack.
  • I have been using the same MSR hydration system now for 10 years and it is still going strong and has never leaked. It is made from a durable light weight canvas and if you want you can even blow them up at night and put a shirt over it and use it as a pillow. The MSR bladder system is resistant to having those water blow outs that saturate your entire pack contents when the bladders separate at the seam. The MSR bladder system retail for around $80.
  • I also carry a Nalgene water bottle which is lightweight and strong. It has a nice wide mouth which is good for filing out of a creek and is also used to aid in filing up my water bladder from a creek which can be tricky. It is also handy for sterilising water and mixing staminade powders etc. for salt replacement which is vital on the track. It is also a good redundancy should your water bladder fail. The locals just carry an old coke bottle which also does the job fine.

Sleeping Gear

  • Adventure Bound will loan each trekker a two person tent. The tent has an internal mesh mozzie net, fly and ground sheet. It is free standing which will allow it to be erected indoors without the use of pegs.
  • When indoors, the fly can be removed from the tent and the mozzie dome erected and slept in to provide better air circulation and mozzie free sleeping.
  • Adventure Bound recommends that all persons sleep inside the mozzie dome every night to prevent being bitten by mozzies.

Sleeping Bag

  • A good sleeping bag is important when walking the Kokoda Trail. People assume because the Kokoda Trail is in the tropics, it won’t get cold. During your climb, you will reach an altitude of 2200 metres which means you are going to be cold at night so you need to select a sleeping bag that will be appropriate.
  • O to 5+ rating sleeping bag is sufficient for you needs. Get one that unzips all the way so that when you are in the lower hotter areas, you can unzip it and use it as a blanket so you can ventilate and won’t get too hot. Alternately you can purchase a silk sleeping bag liner which is light weight and will be sufficient for the hotter areas. This will also lower the rating of your sleeping bag when used in combination.
  • The best and cheapest range of sleeping bags in my opinion is the Black wolf brand which has a variety of bags for a price range of $80 to $200AU.
  • Please ensure your sleeping bag is no larger than the size of a football.

Sleeping mattress

  • A mattress of some form should be used while on the Kokoda Trail. These are an item that will allow your body to rest in comfort during the night so that you are able to be fully charged in the morning to tackle the challenge that a walk on the Kokoda Trail offers.
  • A mattress also provides insulation from the ground while sleeping so when you are in the higher areas of the track where it is colder, your body will not be in contact with the cold ground. A sleeping bag will not provide that insulation from the ground.
  • The best type of mattress is a hiking Air Mattress. Although they are more expensive than the self-inflating mattresses, they are more likely to give you are good sleep. We love the Exped Synmat 7 with the integrated pump. Sea to Summit and Airlite also make comparable mats. inflating mattress which has compressed foam inside which expands when the inflation tube is opened. These provide insulation and cushiony comfort for the weary trekker.
  • There are a lot of cheap alternatives on the market but I recommend the Exped Synmat series of mattresses which retail between $120 to $200.
  • A pillow will provide you with comfort and a good night’s rest after a hard days trek. A pillow weighs just about nothing and compresses down to the size of a pair of socks, I never sleep in the field without one. It’s like a home away from home. Alternatively you can use a dry bag stuffed with clothing.
  • I recommend the Thermarest Compressible Pillow which retails for approximately $40. However, there are cheaper pillow alternatives for $10 – 15AU.
  • The most important item that you must select is footwear. Your feet are the form of transport to get you across the Owen Stanley Range.
  • Incorrectly fitting boots will cause friction and rubbing which will result in blisters.
  • Do not wear heavy leather mountaineering boots as they become water logged and even heavier which will make your legs feel like lead, walking up some of the steep terrain on the Kokoda Trail.
  • Wear lightweight synthetic or suede boots with ankle support and a vibram sole that has an aggressive tread pattern to help you get a good positive grip while trekking.
  • Your feet will get wet from time to time, either through sweat or rain. Purchase boots with composite materials such as suede and mesh for their quick drying capabilities or Gortex-lined boots.
  • Gortex lined boots are a personal choice. They will keep your feet dry from dew and mud, however the heavy rain and creeks that are experienced on the Kokoda Trail will find their way inside your boots. I prefer the boots that are lined as they keep my feet dry for longer, especially if we don’t experience heavy rain.
  • You will require a little extra toe room in your boots for the down hill sections otherwise you will get an impact injury from your toes smashing into the ends of your boots.
  • The best brands are Merrel, North Face, Salomon, Keen and Scarpa.
  • The most important aspect is to train with the boots that you will wear on Kokoda. This training should be over varied terrain and varied environmental conditions to see how they treat your feet.
  • There are several areas along the hike which are suitable to wear sandals rather than shoes such as creeks and wet areas. This will allow the feet to air out and prevent blisters due to wet shoes and socks.
  • Sandals are also good to wear in camp to air the feet out.
  • I recommend Teva, Keen or Merrell Sandals which are light, durable and have a good sole which are designed for this type of adventure. This type of sandals retail for approximately $120AU

Trekking Clothing

  • The Kokoda Trail can be cold, very wet and insect ridden so your selection of clothing such as trekking gear, sleeping clothing and cold and wet weather clothing is important for your comfort and safety.
  • A lightweight moisture wicking t-shirt and shorts combination are ideal for trekking across the Kokoda Trail due to their quick drying capability. It is also advisable to purchase shorts with lots of pockets to carry maps, GPS, camera, lollies etc. Make sure the shorts come with a belt (not leather) as you will lose a few kilos on the track and you don’t want any embarrassing situations.
  • Some people like to wear a lycra/ skins style bike pant to stop from chaffing. I prefer to go commando which allows my crown jewels to stay well aired out. The preference is up to the individual. I will suggest that you do not wear cotton under pants as they will get wet, rub and cause chaffing.

Camp Clothing

  • The clothing I wear around the camp site is a pair of running shorts with the mesh undies sown into them which keep the groin area well aired. I also wear another moisture wicking shirt which is comfortable and gives me a second shirt should my trekking shirt fail. If it gets cold, I have a light weight Norwegian skivvy that is sufficient. I can also use this as an improvised pillow.
  • Socks are the individual’s preference. There are a lot of different brands of hiking socks claiming dryness and blister free trekking. Ensure you select the correct thickness so your boots don’t become too tight or too loose. You should select a thin sock for the Kokoda Trail so that your feet don’t overheat.

Rain Jacket

  • A light weight rain jacket can be utilised around camp to get you to and from your tent etc. There are extremely expensive Gortex rain coats which will cost you anywhere up to $700. I would advise just getting a light weight poncho.
  • Gaiters are a comfort and safety item which I don’t leave home without, as they are light and cheap. They are used primarily to prevent water, mud and small rocks from entering into your boots causing discomfort, prune feet and blisters due to wet socks. They are also used to protect your shins against scratches from sticks and rocks smashing into your shins. Small scratches can fester if not treated correctly in a tropical environment.
  • I recommend that you do not buy the cheap alternative such as, workers ankle gaiters, like the type gardeners wear because they do not have an underfoot strap that goes under the sole of the boot to stop them from working their way up.
  • I wear Sea to Summit Quagmire canvas gaiters that are full length and breathable, highly durable and water proof. They have a full Velcro opening with an underfoot strap and a lace hook that allows them to hold to your shoes laces. I have worn these on many treks across Australia and overseas and I highly recommend them. These gaiters retail for approximately $80AU

Miscellaneous

  • A good head torch is a requirement for a trek along the Kokoda Trail. At night time in the jungle where there is a full canopy covering any moon light, you will not be able to see your hand in front of your face.
  • We will not be walking at night; however, a head torch is a safety requirement and is useful when trying to find your way to the camp toilet in the middle of the night or for general use at night, whether it is for eating, reading or playing cards.
  • An LED torch with a maximum output of 100 Lumens should be sufficient. I recommend the Petzl, Black Diamond and Princeton Tec range of head torches which can retail from $80 to $120AU.
  • Carry some small gifts for the children who you will meet in the villages along the track, or better yet save your gifts for Soputa Village at the end of your trek! Soputa Village is where you will stay for a cultural experience and they have very little interaction with people. Some simple and cheap options are items such as tennis balls, football and pump, colouring pencils and paper, and Frisbees.
  • You could also consider bringing 2 nd hand clothes to distribute, as you should have extra weight available, once all the essentials are packe d.

Photography

  • Please bring a small camera with you to document your adventure or alternatively use your phone to take photos. If it is not the waterproof type, ensure that you have an appropriate dry bag to keep it dry. Also ensure that you bring extra batteries or a charge bank.
  • Please avoid the SLR type cameras as they are not sealed and may get moisture inside the lens and housing.
  • A small toiletry kit should be taken and contain a bar of soap, toilet paper, deodorant, tooth paste and tooth brush, small micro fibre towel, and face wipes all in a water proofed container
  • There will only be washing facilities in the villages which is sometimes just a creek or a shower arrangement. Please use soap which is suitable for the environment because the runoff drains to the creeks in most areas.

Eating Utensils

  • Bowl, plate, cup, knife, fork, spoon and teaspoon

The Adventure Bound Team takes your safety and any medical issues very seriously. All trek leaders are trained in first aid and we have a satellite phone and mobile phone available for emergency casualty evacuation.

It is essential that you look after yourself in training and while on the track so that you enjoy the trek and come home fit and healthy.

In some cases a medical certificate will have to be obtained to ensure that you are fit and healthy to undertake the Kokoda tour prior to embarkation.

We carry a group medical kit which will be used in case of emergency and for the local guides.

Personal Medical Kit

  • The Kokoda Track is a malaria area so please see your local GP for an appropriate anti malaria medication. Adventure Bound Vanuatu will provide you with a loaned mozzie dome for protection against mozzies while sleeping.
  • You will require water sterilisation tablets for the duration of the trek. All the local water is clean however should be treated as suspect and sterilised prior to consumption.
  • A small first aid kit must be taken and contain all items as listed on the downloadable kit list. Please bring a copy of the prescription for any prescription medications you may require.

Q : Do I require a Tourist Visa?

A: Australian tourists are required to get a tourist visa before they arrive in PNG. This can be completed online or in person at a PNG Consulate.

Q : Do I need travel / medical insurance for Kokoda?

A: Yes, you do need Travel Insurance, it is very important. You are responsible to organise your own Travel/Medical insurance, which can be organised at your Travel Agent. You will need coverage for medical evacuation; medical, theft, loss etc… speak to your Travel Agent about the inclusions. Travel Insurance MUST include Medical Evacuation (anywhere along the Kokoda Track) and medical expenses including hospital coverage in PNG and Australia. It can be a very costly experience for you if you do not have your Travel Insurance! So please specify you will be on the 'Kokoda Track'. We require a copy of your personal, Travel and Medical Insurance no later than 4 weeks before departure. Failure to have travel and medical insurance will prevent you from trekking.

Q : Do you offer group discounts?

A: Yes. We are happy to offer you a group discount. Please provide your group size and we will send your group an individual quote.

Q : What is the food like?

A: Adventure Bound Tours prides itself on the quality of the food provided on the trek. We are also well aware of the nutritional requirements to complete a grueling trek such as Kokoda. Freddy (our head cook) has a team of carriers who will carry all food for breakfast, lunch and dinner along the journey. Breakfast will comprise of Porridge and fruit. Lunch is a variety of wraps, tuna, pasta, and fruit. Dinner is rice, pasta, with choice of toppings and pizza. Desert is freshly cooked doughnuts and cake. You will need to provide your own snacks for in between meals, which you will carry on you. Snacks could comprise of bars, shapes, lollies etc, whatever you like to chew on while hiking. Adventure Bound Kokoda will also provide sports drinks to replace the salt used while trekking. Please advise Adventure Bound Kokoda of any dietary requirements that you may have.

Q : How do you help the local communities along the Track?

A: We provide employment for locals along the Kokoda track by way of porters, cooks and guides. Additional money is also imparted into villages along the trail via accommodation fees to guesthouse owners and fire wood charges. Aussie guides also provide first aid and basic health care where they see a need.

Q : Is This an Australian led trek?

A: Yes. All our Kokoda Tours are led by ex-Australian Army leaders who are well aware of the history and tactics used during the Kokoda campaign.

Q : Do I need a porter?

A: Adventure Bound Kokoda strongly advises all trekkers to hire a porter. This will create employment for the locals and induce money into the local villages. You will also enjoy the experience to a greater degree and reduce the chance of injury to yourself. A porter is an additional $700AU. This pays the porter’s wage, food and return flight to their home locations. Your porter will also put up your tent and pack it away each morning.

Q : Village life

A: Whilst in the villages we recommend you do not give money to anyone, as this can generate problems between the locals. They live as a community and money needs to be shared between all in the village. If you would like to bring something for the villages, a gift that they can share is more appropriate, clothes, ball games, colouring in items, books, reading and writing material. First aid items are also very much needed (and appreciated) e.g. band aids, antiseptic lotions, strapping etc. Obviously you would not leave your prescription or strong medication with the local people as they are not accustomed to such medications. If taken without supervision they could cause harm. We also ask our trekkers not to wander around the villages in swimming costumes. Please cover up while walking around the villages, as a sign of respect.

Q : What are the washing/cleaning/toilets/shower facilities on Kokoda like?

A: The facilities on Kokoda are very basic. Toilets on the Track and villages are known as ‘long drops’ and ‘short drops’. These are simple, deep pits or short pits that have been dug in the ground for use as toilets. There are no toilet seats. These facilities have a roof and screen over them for privacy. You do need to take your own toilet paper (2 rolls). The river is used for the shower and washing facilities or in some villages a simple water pipe is used to flow the water onto the trekker for washing. Washing of clothes is done in the river. We suggest you bring environmentally friendly soap. Antibacterial Hand Gel is essential.

Q : What do I need to bring?

A: Adventure Bound Kokoda has a comprehensive Trekking Gear Guide to help you with the selection of your equipment. Please refer to our website for the Trekking Gear Guide list and printable checklist.

Q : What happens to the rubbish on Kokoda?

A: It is essential that we all take good care of the Track. If you purchase soft drinks along the Track, then you need to crush the cans and carry them out with you. All rubbish is either burnt or carried out. Whilst trekking, please put your own rubbish in your backpack until you arrive at the next campsite. If you see rubbish on the Track, please pick it up and put it in our rubbish bags.

Q : Do we have exclusive use of the campsites and guesthouses?

A: No-one has exclusive use of the campsites or guest houses along the Kokoda Track. It is possible that some campsites will be shared by other campers.

Q : How many people sleep in each tent? What size are the tents?

A: Only one person per tent, unless you specifically want to share a tent i.e. partner/friend etc. The tents are 2 person tents. Couples may prefer to bring a 3 man tent.

Q : What is the accommodation like on the Kokoda Track?

A: The accommodation on the Kokoda Track is tents, with each trekker getting the use of a 2 person tent. We will camp at the best available camp sites and a 2 person tent provides privacy and mosquito protection.

Q : Do we carry our own tents?

A: If you have a personal porter he/she would carry your tent. If you are carrying your own pack then you would carry your tent. Your personal porter will help you to erect, and pack up your tent each day.

Q : Can we bring food into PNG?

A: Yes you can. The food must be packaged and you must declare your food and advise customs that it is for trekking on the Kokoda Track.

Q : How fit do you have to be to walk Kokoda?

A: While you do not need to be an elite athlete, you do need to be in great physical condition, with good endurance and stamina. You need to be able to walk up to 9 hours per day in hot and humid conditions. The terrain over the Kokoda Track is tough and very steep. You need a strong heart, lungs, quads, calves and a strong and positive attitude. We provide you with a training program from our very own personal trainer. We recommend you consult your medical practitioner before undertaking any new training program. Please Note: All trekkers need to be aware that being well above your healthy weight range seriously impacts on your ability to complete the Track. Should you fall into this category we highly recommend that you concentrate your training on an intensive weight loss/fitness program. You may like to consider hiring a personal trainer to assist you with your fitness goals. Once again we recommend you consult your medical practitioner before undertaking any new training program.

Q : When are the best conditions to trek Kokoda?

A: The conditions on the Track vary due to the changes in the season. The seasons are broken up into the dry season and the wet season. These seasons also have sub seasons which fringe the wet and dry season. The dry season is normally from late May to late October. Good conditions can still be expected in April and November. It is possible to get rain and consequently mud on the Track during any season or month. Late November, December, January, February and March can be wet and muddy. The temperature will range from 24-28 degrees under the canopy and up to 32 degrees out in the open areas. The night time temperature will range from 18 degrees in the lower sections down to 8 degrees in the higher areas like Mt Bellamy. Humidity will range between 80% – 95%

Q : Do you cover the Military History and Cultural aspects of the Kokoda Track?

A: Adventure Bound Kokoda is committed to passing on the history of the Kokoda campaign including the personal stories of the diggers to each trekker who journeys with them. Adventure Bound Kokoda Director and Guide is an ex digger who has a passion for the history of the Track. We believe this is a very important part of Australian history that needs to continually be passed on. Our guides are passionate about the history and will share their detailed knowledge of the track and its history with you. We are also dedicated to looking after the villagers and local people along the Track. Our PNG Guides and Porters are from the track and will share their history and culture with you.

Q : What happens in case of an emergency?

A: Adventure Bound Kokoda carries satellite phones on all treks; we have an emergency evacuation plan which is implemented. On receiving call for assistance we activate our plan and organise medical, travel insurance and evacuation plans. Contact us if you require further details.

Q : How much money will I need on the Kokoda Track?

A: On the Track you need to take local currency (PNG Kina). You can organise to buy PNG currency through your local bank before you leave Australia or at the money exchanger at the International Airports. We would highly recommend that you have PNG currency before leaving Australia. 300 Kina should be sufficient to buy some small souvenirs and soft drinks along the Track. Ensure that you have small denominations because the locals will not have change. Most things on the Track will cost K5 – K10 (5 Kina approx $3.00 AUD) i.e. bunch of bananas, photo with Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, can of Coke. Around 200 Kina should be plenty. Please Note: the local villages do not have change to give you, therefore lots of small change is best. In Port Moresby Eftpos machines are few and far between. For your own safety we do not recommend you go into Port Moresby town to the local bank.

Q : Do we tip the porters?

A: PNG is a not a tipping country, so tipping your porter is not necessary. However you may want to reward a job well done. Any of your excess clothes or caps, T-shirts etc. would be very much appreciated.

“ I cannot recommend Adventure Bound tours and their Kokoda Experience enough. From the first email to the final hotel send off, Belinda and Olly were amazing. Belinda’s emails and organisation were so helpful and every detail was planned and thought out. Any question was answered quickly (usually within the hour!) and I felt fully prepared with all the info needed before setting off. Olly was just incredible as trek leader. His knowledge of the campaign, the landscape and the culture is second to none, and his passion for keeping the stories alive was so inspiring. He truly loves sharing his knowledge and the history of the campaign and that is just priceless. The two services on the track were beautiful and moving, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The rest of the team were amazing. The personal porters were so lovely and always looking out for us. They would often anticipate what we needed and have it done before we could ask for it. And the chefs were absolute magicians! I couldn’t believe in the middle of the jungle we were fed pizza, birthday cake, donuts and pancakes! No army can march on an empty stomach, and the crew made sure our bellies were always full. This was a life changing experience for me, and I’m so glad I got to share it with the Adventure Bound team. They made it so special and memorable and I am forever grateful for them, their hard work, and for sharing this experience with me. Much love to you all! ”

“ Without a doubt one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. Completing the Kokoda Track is something that my father has wanted to do for as long as I can remember as my grandfather fought in the 2/14th Battalion on the Kokoda Track. I had the chance to make my fathers dream come true and we completed this challenge for his 60th birthday. I cannot thank Olly and Belinda enough for supporting, assisting and allowing this experience to occur for myself and dad. Belinda's ability to control and organise over 20 people to come together from all over the country to complete this journey, and Olly's expertise and knowledge of the track is incredible. It is clear that this isn't just a job, but a passion and something that Olly loves to do, and it shows throughout the entire track. I am looking forward to doing the Kokoda Track again in the future with the Adventure Bound crew. Thank you so much.”

“ What an amazing experience both physically and emotionally we had trekking the Kokoda Track. Olly's knowledge and ability to recount the battles, explain the strategies and why they were or were not successful at each site was delivered in a very authentic manner. The scenery, villages and people all exceeded my expectations. The porters did an amazing job, always with a smile on their faces. Thank you to Olly, Belinda and all the Adventure Bound Team in PNG for an amazing trip - memories for a lifetime!!”

“ Hey Belinda and Olly, thank you for the amazing once in a lifetime experience!!! I had heaps of fun and made some great friends along the way the trip was amazing honestly and Olly, you made it so relaxed and easy going. Also, Belinda thank you for everything in getting the information we needed to me and Chunk and helping to arrange everything it honestly was so helpful and made it so easy. Also wanted to say how great it is the we meet in Cairns prior and from what I hear one of the only, if not the only, Kokoda trek companies that meet in Australia, getting to meet you guys and the team the night before flying out in Aus was amazing and also settles the nerves. Also makes the trip so much smoother only having to get into Cairns then throwing all your worries around planning and sorting things out on Olly's shoulders, (thanks Olly!). Also one final rant, Olly I was blown away by your knowledge of military thought and planning, truely unparalleled and it's what I've been telling friends and family back home who are interested in going, that if they truely care and want to learn the story of the track and the intricate details and planning surrounding why what happened on the track happened they just can't get any better with you. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Olly, made the stories of these brave Australians feel so real. Thanks guys, me and Chunky would both be super keen to do Kokoda again and there's no other company we would even consider doing it through, thank you!!!”

“ My high school friends and I chose Adventure Bound Tours for our Kokoda experience and we were delighted with our choice. From the warm welcome dinner we knew this family business was the real deal. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. Every detail was thought through for us. We were amazed at the food quality that was produced and always plentiful. Olly had us captivated with war time stories and military strategy. His passion to make sure this history is told well is incredible and moved me to tears on more than one occasion. This is a challenging environment but we felt totally safe with Olly’s guidance and skill. Our porters were all delightful, so patient and skilful. Thanks to Jack for saving me on many occasions. Do the training advised and go with Adventure Bound and you will forever have a brilliant memory. 5/5 stars from me. ”

“ Firstly let me say thank you to Belinda for all the back ground work arranging and supporting us prior to, during and after the trip. Huge job, I can only imagine how many moving parts there must be to arrange a trip like that :). The journey with Olly, our porters and team was simply amazing. An experience that is hard to quantify in words...very tough but twice as rewarding! Olly was just incredible! His knowledge of the track, the journey the soldiers endured, the stories around individual incidents and individual soldiers was matched only by his passion for the 1942 Kokoda campaign. I highly recommend Adventure Bound Tours.......but make sure you train and prepare:). Thanks to Olly & Bel for an experience that will stay with me and our group for ever!!!!!”

“ Thanks Adventure Bound Tours: Belinda in arranging and communicating with my wife in setting up the trip; Ollie who is an amazing 'salt of the earth' bloke who has the knowledge and commitment to the 'real' story of the Kokoda Track battles. Also, the military experience to explain and demonstrate the tactics and skills of the ebb and flow of the Kokoda Track campaign. Although the trek is a challenge, the beauty of the scenery, local people and the bonds you'll make with your porter will change your life. Trust when I and others say 'hire a porter'. There is no downside to using one and you'll regret it otherwise. Happy trekking!”

“ After myself and my wife successfully completed this Epic Adventure with Adventure bound lead by (Olie) and Belinda (in the background), this was one of the most satisfying experiences we’ve ever had the pleasure of completing. Our tour guide (Olie) has a passion for the Kokoda History and his knowledge was honestly second to none. Our wonderful Porters, Cooks, Kitchen helpers looked after us extremely well. They had our backs when things got a bit slippery (all the time really) or a bit dicey over the mountains, and I can’t think them enough. The 2 Ceremonies we had we very emotional days on the trip, there weren’t any dry eyes in the house at Brigade Hill. The only thing I’d really like to see(if possible to still happen) would be a certificate of our achievement that would be framed and placed on our wall for all to see and think, I could do that. If you were thinking of doing this Trek, do yourself a favour and don’t go past Adventure Bound Tours l, they go the original route from Owers Corner to the finish at Kokoda. My wife and I absolutely loved everything about this adventure. Highly recommended for a well organised, informative, pleasurable Trek. Thanks again Belinda & Ollie”

“ I must say that the extraordinary adventure with Adventure Bound Tours, trekking the Kokoda Track from 18-26 April 23 was an experience that surpassed all expectations. The tour not only provided an opportunity for physical challenge and breathtaking natural beauty, but also allowed us to honor the sacrifices of those who came before us and gain a profound understanding of the historical significance of the Kokoda Track. One of the most moving moments of our journey was Anzac Day at Isurava. It was an emotional day filled with reverence and gratitude as we paid tribute to the heroes who fought bravely in the Kokoda Campaign. Adventure Bound Tours ensured that every detail was meticulously planned to create a poignant and meaningful experience for all of us. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom, and it was an honour to be a part of it. Visiting the Port Moresby War Cemetery was an incredibly personal and poignant moment for our group. With the help of Adventure Bound Tours, we were able to locate our ancestor, Neville Edlundh (AIF 2/25Bn), who tragically lost his life during the Pacific War. The sheer magnitude of the cemetery and the countless stories it held left a lasting impression on us. Adventure Bound Tours' dedication to ensuring we could pay our respects and connect with our family history was truly commendable. One of the highlights of the tour was Ollie, our knowledgeable guide. Ollie's passion for history and his ability to breathe life into the events of the Pacific War in PNG was awe-inspiring. His depth of knowledge was astounding, and he effortlessly conveyed the significance of each location we visited. Ollie's storytelling skills transported us back in time, allowing us to vividly imagine the struggles and triumphs of the soldiers who traversed the Kokoda Track. His enthusiasm was infectious, and we couldn't help but be captivated by his every word. Adventure Bound Tours demonstrated an unwavering commitment to creating an immersive and authentic experience. Throughout the trek, we were constantly inspired by the courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice of those who fought along the Kokoda Track. Your professionalism and expertise were evident from start to finish, allowing us to focus on absorbing the incredible surroundings and soaking up the history. Overall, my experience with Adventure Bound Tours on the Kokoda Track trek was life-changing. The journey was a perfect blend of physical challenge, historical significance, and personal reflection. I will highly recommend Adventure Bound Tours to anyone seeking an adventure that will leave a lasting impression. This tour has undoubtedly deepened my appreciation for the bravery and sacrifices made during the Pacific War, WWII and has forever etched the Kokoda Track into my heart.”

“ Our hiking tour along the Kokoda trail was incredible! Olly and Belinda were very helpful and easy to deal with prior to the tour commencing and everything was organised to perfection for the duration of the tour. Our tour guide Mace (Benno) was very knowledgeable about the history of the Kokoda campaign and passed that on to us all with a great amount of detail and passion. The equipment provided was all top quality and the meals that we ate along the track were hearty and delicious. My experience with Adventure Bound Tours was one that I will never forget and couldn't recommend them highly enough!”

“ Thank you Adventure Bound for the most incredible experience! To be able to walk in the footsteps of my Granddad on the track and my Pa in Port Moresby with my dad and brother was surreal. Without the knowledge, support and experience of Olly, Nathan, my porter Harry and the rest of the crew I definitely wouldn't have been able to go as far as I did and even though my trek did not end the way I expected, they made sure my health and safety was top priority and I felt safe and supported every step of the way. I can't recommend Adventure Bound highly enough to anyone who is looking to do Kokoda. They truly go above and beyond to look after everyone in their care and provide a truly memorable experience.”

“ I recently had the privilege of embarking on the Adventure Bound Tours Kokoda Trio for Anzac Day, and I must say it was a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience. From the moment we set foot on this incredible journey, it became evident that this tour was something truly special. Our tour guide, Olly, was an absolute gem. Not only did he possess a vast array of knowledge about the Kokoda Track and its historical significance, but he also had a wonderful sense of humour that made the entire trip all the more enjoyable. Olly's ability to blend facts, stories, and light-hearted banter created a fantastic atmosphere within the group, fostering a sense of camaraderie and making each step of the journey engaging and fun. The trip itself was a challenging yet rewarding adventure. The Kokoda Track is steeped in history and traverses breathtaking landscapes, and Adventure Bound Tours ensured that we had an authentic experience. The trek was well-organized, and the pace was set perfectly, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the surroundings and appreciate the sacrifices made by the Australian soldiers who fought on this hallowed ground. The tour company's attention to detail was commendable. The chosen overnight camping spots provided a much-needed respite after long days of hiking. The meals provided by the porters were delicious and nourishing, ensuring we had the energy to continue our journey. One of the standout moments of the trip was the Anzac Day dawn service. Adventure Bound Tours ensured we were in Isurava the night before the dawn service at Isurava Memorial, where we paid our respects to the fallen soldiers. It was an incredibly poignant and emotional experience, and the tour company's efforts to make this moment so meaningful were greatly appreciated. I cannot recommend Adventure Bound Tours Kokoda Trio for Anzac Day enough. The combination of historical significance, breathtaking landscapes, and the expertise and humour of Olly made this journey truly exceptional. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an avid trekker, or simply looking for a transformative adventure, this tour is a must-do. Prepare to be challenged, inspired, and deeply moved by the Kokoda Track and the incredible team at Adventure Bound Tours.”

“ Hiking the Kokoda Track was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I had done my research on the Kokoda Campaign before leaving but Olly's knowledge and explanations along the track made me understand and take in what our soldiers and fuzzy wuzzy angels had to endure. He went above and beyond to make sure we understood what happened every step of the way. Our porters were amazing from morning to night nothing was too much trouble for them to do. The food was delicious Spaghetti Bolognaise, Pizza, Spring Rolls, Pancakes the list goes on. Thanks Olly and Billy for making my experience amazing and something I will never forget. I will be back to do it all again.”

“ Having made the decision to trek Kokoda, my wife and I set about choosing the right fit in terms of the guide. We wanted to join and meet the group in Cairns, walk from Owers Corner following the Diggers advance, and have a guide with a broader range of knowledge. We ticked every need with Adventure Bound. Supported with planning from the early stages, to the briefing in Cairns, and through the trek itself, we were given an experience that we will treasure forever. The challenge of the trek was huge, and rewarding, however the emotional journey was special. Through the history of the WW2 campaign and in the unique cultural that we encountered. You develop a special bond with fellow trekkers, and the support crew, in a way that can’t be described. Thanks Billy and Olly for our treasured memories.”

“ I can’t thank Olly & Billy enough, one of the most amazing, challenging and touching experiences in my life! I did my research before I booked and always came back to Adventure Bound. One comment I read in a review was “I felt sorry for other groups walking past, whilst Olly explained the history, battle and tactics etc” well I felt the same thing as groups walked straight past as we were learning the history of the battles. The cooks are amazing and there was always enough for seconds, pancakes, pizzas etc. Please, please use a porter as firstly you will enjoy it more and take more in and secondly the porters are descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzies and this is their only job and enables them to make a good wage for their families as their is no other work for them. They are amazing people and will catch you before you fall on the hills, laugh with you and sing to you after dinner and just love doing this job as did their fathers, grandfathers etc. We had two beautiful services for our fallen diggers that were put together by Olly and Billy and they included the porters who represent the Fuzzy Wuzzies and their was not a dry eye at either service. I have traveled the world, but Olly and Billy made this one of the most memorable places I have been. Don’t hesitate Olly and Billy and their team of wonderful Fuzzy Wuzzies will look after you like family! Thanks Jesse ”

“ After talking about Kokoda for over ten years, my best mate & I finally took the plunge and booked with Adventure Bound. From the outset of those initial inquiries Olly & Billy made us feel very much at ease with their timely & informative replies. A couple of unforeseen events forced us to twice amend our trek dates, this was never a problem they could not have been more accommodating. Fast forward to October 2019 & with 16 other trekkers we assembled in Cairns. At the initial briefing with Olly & Billy I knew this was going to be a memorable experience, they’re just so professional & make everyone feel comfortable. From the hotel foyer on day 1 to the return ten days later everything was organised & ran very smoothly. The crew of porters are sensational & are always there to guide you when needed. My own personal porter Michael was brilliant, he had my back the entire time. Olly is very passionate about Kokoda, his knowledge of the campaign is without peer & the briefings he delivers bring to life what it was like in 1942. He also possesses a typically wicked Aussie sense of humour which surfaces at exactly the right time to put a smile on faces when the trekking gets tough. The two dawn services at Brigade Hill & Isurava are very moving & I’m not ashamed to say I shed a couple of tears. Don’t be mistaken it’s bloody tough going in places but walking through those arches with my best mate & 16 other ‘brothers & sisters’ is a feeling I will never forget. Thank you Adventure Bound.”

“ Thank you Olly & Billy for all your planning and organisational skills. I did not have to think about anything but the task at hand. The assistance and professional conduct of the porters with total care and diligence towards our safety at all time gave much comfort to me and my husband. The historical knowledge of influential events shared along the track help me to understand the footprints of our fore fathers struggles and victories during the time of war. Will highly recommend to all my friends, thinking of attending the Kokoda Trek.”

“ Wow, what an adventure. I was fortunate enough to complete the Kokoda Track with my son in Sept 2019 & the experience is something neither of us will forget for our lifetime. No matter how hard you train, the terrain on the track is something different which us Western Australians find hard to replicate. We have a new found respect for the Diggers of 1942 as photos do not do justice to the difficulty of the track as you are constantly watching your footing without the added pressure of walking with around a combined 30 kilos in their backpacks which included ammo, food, water, rifle & ammunition for the mortars whilst at the same time trying to watch for Japanese activity. We deliberately booked with Adventure Bound Tours due to the simple fact Ollie was a former SAS soldier who has the knowledge to understand the battle tactics of both the Diggers & Japanese. His explanations were first class and made the trek even more enjoyable. Billy was exceptional for her prompt response to all emails & keeping us informed on what was required by certain dates. Both my son & myself have already recommended to several of our friends who have expressed an interest in walking the track to contact Adventure Bound Tours. We shall have no hesitation in recommending ABT to other friends & family. Thank you for a fantastic experience. ”

“ Well what can I say, this really was the most amazing experience of my life. I would like to thank Billy for making this trip so easy as everything is organized for you and any questions are not a problem and are answered promptly. Olly was fantastic from the airport leaving to the airport coming home. His knowledge of the history of the battle is second to none and the two services we had were an incredible experience which I will never forget. There is nothing walked past on the trek without a detailed explanation of what, when and how, and he answers any question thrown at him, he really is just a fantastic guy who loves what he does. The porters are an experience on there own and are a must to help their families as well looking after you like family, they will laugh with you, at you, and make the trip a wonderful experience. They are incredible!! The cooks do a super job and there is plenty of food to go around with a great variety . Once again thank you Billy and Olly and the Adventure bound team for the most amazing experience imaginable .”

“ From the outset I knew it would be a great trip. Olly made everyone feel comfortable with his humour and advice. Olly's knowledge of the area and the battles fought was astounding. His talks gave us an insight into the hardships the troops faced and how the Fuzzy Wuzzy's helped the Australian wounded. All of our group bonded with our porters and staff very well and the night time sing alongs were fantastic. For me, it was a bucket list item that was 35 years in the making and to do it with my daughter was one of the most precious moments in my life. Recapping the days adventure while we sat down to a fantastic evening meal was great and the laughter was infectious. The most memorable day for me was the visit to Soputa where I was witness to the most amazing footy match anyone could ever see. Ten trekkers running around in calf deep water in the river with about 50 kids from the village all wanting to run, tackle and chase that football. Some lost their pants, others realised they aren't as young as they used to be. I can't speak highly enough of the Adventure Bound crew and would recommend them to anyone wishing to do the track.”

“ I had a fantastic time on the Kokoda Trek - I loved every minute of it and did not want it to end! Thanks to Belinda for organising the trip and thanks to Olly and Graham for leading us and making it such a rewarding experience. The terrain and scenery made it an amazing walk but what made it really special was learning about the war history from Olly and Graham, and being immersed in the culture. All of our porters came from villages along the trail and we were able to interact with the friendly villagers as we passed through. The final night was spent at a traditional village well away from the track which was a remarkable and memorable cultural experience. We had a big group (22) but it worked out well as we naturally formed a lead group, middle group and rear group for walking and all came together again for our breaks and in the evenings so you got to know everyone anyway. To anyone considering doing this trek I would suggest that you get as fit as you possibly can including a few long training treks of 20km or more and including lots and lots of long steep hills. If you are super fit you will have a greater chance of enjoying every step, day after day! I would definitely choose to go with Adventure Bound again - the whole experience was great from planning to completion.”

“ I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kokoda. There was not a moment where I wasn’t enjoying the track. Olly was knowledgeable, the porters were caring, the food was spectacular (we even had sushi on the track), the memorial services were moving, the company we kept was great, the meal entertainment (fire, flowing river, touch footy games, swimming in creek and under waterfalls, lookouts over the landscape, card games, porters singing etc) was phenomenal. Thanks for taking us on this trek and looking after us. I am looking forward to doing this with my kids when they are old enough! ”

“ From first contact to the last day, Adventure Bound Tours provided an experience that I will never forget. From staging out of the safe and comfortable Double Tree Hilton in Cairns, to the emotional services along the track to the cultural immersion at the end, Olly and Billy deliver more than expected! One of the few operators to run the trek from South to North. I must admit, I didn't think too much about this until I started the walk. Starting in Owers Corner and finishing in Kokoda makes absolute sense and follows the original advance in the campaign. The ability of Olly to give detailed accounts of the battles from a strategic perspective to brigade level, to section level and even down to individual acts of bravery was amazing to be part of. Olly’s down to earth straight shooting approach made for many laughs along the way. Then the emotional services experienced would bring a tear to the steeliest of eyes. It was an experience with a laundry list of inclusions that sets Adventure Bound Tours out from the rest. ”

“ I have just returned from PNG and doing the Kokoda Track with Adventure Bound Tours. Myself and 5 of my best mates all went for the Anzac Day Trek and had an amazing experience. Massive thanks to Olly, Billy, Lance and all of our amazing porters for making the trip one we will remember for a lifetime. We had talked about doing the trek for years and finally got organised about 18 months ago and I’m so glad I booked us in with Adventure Bound. Olly’s knowledge of the Kokoda campaign and his insights into the battles from his soldier’s perspective was great and made the trip that much more enjoyable. The actual hike was quite a challenge at times but Olly and the porters made sure every member of our group made it through to the end with no injuries or delays! If you’re thinking of doing the Kokoda Track I would highly recommend going with Olly and Adventure Bound Tours. We are hoping to book in a trip to Vanuatu with them next! Cheers”

“ Just wanting to thank Adventure Bound for one of the greatest experiences and challenges that I've ever undertaken. I'm still recovering, but I think related to being the oldest of the ANZAC 2019 crew, struggling to keep up with the better looking and much fitter colleagues. Olly and Billy are amazing people who put together a fantastic tour, one that I cannot recommend highly enough. Perfect itinerary full of information, sights, experiences and much laughter, all while maintaining the highest duty of care of all trackers. To the ANZAC 2019 crew, miss you all and hope everyone is doing well..”

“ I cannot thank Olly and Billy enough for sharing such a wonderful experience with me. I knew I had made the right decision choosing Adventure Bound Tours as soon as I saw Billy’s reassuring smile during the Cairns briefing. Over the next 10 days Olly’s genuine empathy for his brothers in arms and those that served before him added another dimension to an experience that was everything you would expect - challenging, sweaty, demanding – but so much more – fun, thought provoking, life changing. I felt sorry for the other trekkers we passed along the way as I knew their tour guide could not have nurtured the same kokoda spirit and mateship we felt. Thanks to Olly’s military insights I have been casually dropping “enfilade fire from a defilade position” into conversations ever since I got back! Of course none of it would have been possible without the quiet, unwavering support of the porters. Always present, always attentive, culinary geniuses with bully beef and all round knights in rubber thongs. Trek was so good I’ll never do it again with anyone else!”

“ Having for some time wanted to walk the Kokoda Track, I started to research companies that provided the service. I spoke with many and was drawn back to the friendly and professional outline given to me by Belinda Fowler. Subsequently, I booked with Adventure Bound Tours to commence my trek in May, 2018. Upon meeting with Olly I knew that I had chosen the right people to go with. His knowledge professionalism and humour endeared him to all the trekkers. Unfortunately 4 days into my trek I became ill and had to be evacuated from the Track to Port Moresby Hospital. The way in which both Olly and Belinda arranged for this to happen and the contact that they had with my family throughout all of this process was exceptional. My wife was kept completely up to date with every part of my process. Once home and recovered, I decided to go back and have another go at the Kokoda Track, which I did in August 2018. This time I completed the track with no complications. What an incredible experience. The way in which Olly gets to know each and every person is extremely warming and makes you feel so special. His enthusiasm and knowledge is a big part of what drives you to complete this adventure. The way in which he describes the various locations and battles with a sincere passion showed me that he has such an enormous respect for those Diggers that led the way for Australia. His military background was evident and respected by all on the trek. His professionalism throughout the whole trek was outstanding. The porters, both personal and cooking staff, were not only exemplary but they made an effort to get to know as many of us as possible. The various villages that we visited along the way were respected in all ways and it was very clear to see that Olly had a very good relationship with them. On our trek there were numerous other trekkers with various other companies that we saw and spoke with along the way. It was very interesting to note that Olly took us to places off the track and some quite a distance to show us and explain the various parts that these places played in the battle of Kokoda. We were asked numerous times by other trekkers where we had gone as their tour had not taken them there. Olly has located these areas and it goes to show how invested he is in making sure that his trekkers get the whole experience. I guess the best compliment that I can give to Olly, Belinda and the whole Adventure Bound Crew, is that I was really sorry that it was over. Olly and Billy, thanks for fulfilling an important part of my life.”

“ We all came to Kokoda for an authentic Kokoda experience. Thanks to Olly with his experience as a soldier plus his in depth research into the Kokoda campaign we received what we came for in bucket loads. Olly expertly recounted all the major battles; the tactics of both the Australians and Japanese, the mistakes made and the outcome of each battle. Olly and Billy also organized us so well, put together a wonderful band of porters who cared for us so well that we became family. My highlights were the singing of the porters, the 2 services that Olly organized and the cultural experience at Soputa. I highly recommend this pilgrimage; Olly and Belinda will provide for you an experience that you will never forget. ”

“ I can not speak highly enough of Olly & Belinda. The trip was a breeze with them organising everything. This includes the international flights, a night before & after the trip in Cairns, which makes it all so much better than having to match other flights with meeting up with the tour in PNG. I like the fact everything was included & all we needed extra was a bit of spending money. I loved the fact we did little side treks to see ammunition from cache found in the forest & seeing dugouts still visible from the soldiers positions. With Olly's history in the Forces we got all the battles with detail making it more understandable of the impossible task our soldiers had to defend Australia. Food was great no one went hungry. Would highly recommend this company to everyone. ”

“ My grandfather served in and survived Kokoda and I am not sure what I was after from the tour however Ollie certainly delivered. From the very first briefing in Cairns it was obvious that this small family run tour company was heartfelt and dedicated to giving everyone in the tour the individual attention and delivering the experience of a lifetime. One of the few tours who trek from south to north to follow the first Australian steps on the track and the Australian advance, Ollie and his team ensured the trek was enjoyable throughout, fed us more food than we thought we could eat (but of course we did), pulled out culinary masterpieces like donuts and sushi in the middle of the track and provided in depth military history infused with personal accounts to bring the sacrifice, courage, endurance and mateship to life. Thank you Ollie and Belinda - an experience I will never forget. ”

“ I can highly recommend Adventure Bound as the company of choice for trekking the Kokoda track. Olly and Belinda are very professional and take the time to ensure all pre trek queries are responded to thoroughly. This helps with proper preparation and planning with equipment, insurance etc. All trip details were very well organised by Adventure Bound. Olly's briefings on the trek were comprehensive and helped to prepare you for the day ahead and certainly added a great deal to the overall experience. Olly has an excellent knowledge of and passion for the Kokoda Campaign and its place in our nation's history and character. By making the time to stop at the major battle sites we were able to develop a greater appreciation for the importance of the Kokoda campaign and gain a greater insight into the hardship faced by those who fought there. The Adventure Bound support staff know the track and conditions well and getting to know them across the journey was a great experience in itself. The food provided on the trip was very good and provided the nourishment needed for the long days of trekking. Thanks Adventure Bound for making my Kokoda experience so memorable. ”

“ There are few journeys in life that exceed all expectations. This trek with Olly from Adventure Bound was one such experience. It was, at one and the same time, the greatest physical challenge I have ever faced and one of the most satisfying emotional experiences I have had. Like many who contemplate this journey, we do so for various reasons. Some want to test themselves against some of the roughest hiking on the planet, others want to experience beautiful, virgin rainforest wilderness. For many, like myself however, we want to honour departed family members and departed friends who fought on the Track, by gaining a better understanding of the hardships they endured. Olly is the perfect Trek leader in this regard. His military background and extensive study of the Kokoda Campaign means he can give real tactical insights into not only "what happened" but "why it happened in the way it did". In other words, when examining a Japanese or Australian trench position, Olly can explain in detail, not only what we are looking at but why the position was sited as it was. I found this practical military history lesson fascinating. As an adjunct to this - we held two beautiful and deeply moving memorial services. One at Brigade Hill and a dawn service at Isavura. I very much appreciated the opportunity to speak of the people I knew and loved. As a contrast to the darkness of the war, we enjoyed the incredible beauty of the rainforest and the mountains and the local people. The amazing kindness and charity of the indigenous people was beyond belief. I particularly appreciated the high regard all of the Villagers and Porters had for Olly. Olly is not only providing work for them but he takes a genuine interest in their welfare and the well being of their families. I suspect this high regard translates to Adventure Bound having the pick of the best Porters and the best Cooks on the Track. The meals prepared for us (all cooked over an open fire) were superb, and just what we needed for such intense physical activity. Our Boys are proud of PNG and looked after us with genuine concern for our welfare and to ensure that, wherever possible, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to their country. I cannot finish without mentioning the organisational skills of Olly's partner, Belinda. She was wonderful, and made the whole process, from initial enquiry, to ticketing and visa questions, easy and efficient. From the point of view of a customer - she made the whole thing easy. Obviously, a lot of thought and work has gone into organising and streamlining the Adventure Bound system. I am 67 years old. For many years I did not think that I would ever be fit enough to walk Kokoda. I trained for over a year to do it! It was still tougher than I expected! Yet I wasn't the oldest Trekker on our journey! It just goes to show that with the right preparation and the right tour company - you can achieve anything! Thank you Olly, and Belinda, and Adventure Bound for helping me make my dreams come true!”

“ Couldn't have asked for a better experience than to trek kokoda with my 17 year old son. Proud isn't even the start! Olly was fantastic as our leader, his military history adds a new dimension to the whole trek. I don't think there was a dry eye during our 2 services along the track. Billy was easy to deal with when booking and always quick to reply to any questions I had. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute on the track (even though that may have been hard to tell at the time!!). Memories I'll talk about and remember forever. Without my Porter I definitely would not have finished unscathed. He was fantastic. He was able to get me through the toughest days with a smile on his face. Oh, and I'll never forget my 42ND Birthday! Celebrated on the kokoda track and even with a birthday cake!! Thanks for an amazing experience guys. Nathan and I will always remember and be proud that we have walked in the footsteps of history.”

“ It’s hard to know where to start with leaving a testimonial but to those people reading who are thinking of doing the Kokoda track or any other adventure tour that Olly and Belinda operate I say this without falter... If you want to trek with a first rate tour company and one of the most passionate and experienced guides then these guys are your best bet. From the outset I was informed, had detailed itineraries, pack lists, equipment lists and any questions were promptly answered by Belinda. To deal with an admin person who has walked and experienced the track gave me more than enough confidence in the information I was receiving. Being accommodated in the relaxed atmosphere in Cairns and a detailed briefing with the opportunity to do some last minute shopping was a welcome start and good to know we were coming back too! Having been in the military and deployed overseas, the travel to Port Moresby and the start of the track brought back mixed emotions and thoughts of diggers past. It all too sudden hits you the enormity of the situation these men were put into. It didn’t take long for Olly’s professionalism, knowledge and passion to shine through. His detailed accounts of battles, leaders, individuals, weapons, tactics and the general history kept coming at every poignant point along the track. His ability to connect to everyone in the group whether they were versed in the military campaign or just “adventure trekking “ shone through. Having an extensive military career himself and a genuine passion for the track you felt in safe hands if a situation was to arise, at all times he had the welfare of trekkers and porters foremost. Our trek ran smoothly with porters and cooks who were dedicated to their roles, amazing meals considering almost all items were carried in and the assistance they gave through out the trek never waivered. There was so many experiences along the track that I will never forget, something different around each corner or at the top of every hill. I think everyone needs to experience it for themselves and not just hear it from me! ”

“ What an amazing experience! From the time I first inquired about the trip, Billy has answered all of my questions (even the most mundane), and Ollie was an amazing trek leader - his military knowledge about Kokoda gave us all a deep understanding of what the 39th Battalion endured during the last six months of 1942. Our porters were an inspiration and made a difficult trek so much easier - apart from carrying tents, all of our food and miscellaneous other items, they guided us, gave us a hand up, and saved us from tripping/sliding on the downhill stretches so many times - they were so attentive and were there to help at every opportunity. We were fortunate to have only one day of rain, and the scenery was amazing - ancient trees, dense jungle, clean water flowing in local creeks and rivers and at the very end, the level landscape walking into Kokoda. Everything was provided on the trip - from the accommodation in Cairns at the start and end of the journey, flights to and from PNG and all meals - we were so well looked after from start to finish. It is so easy to recommend this trek - Billy and Ollie were amazing hosts - their familiarity with PNG and the people was evident in every town we visited and in chatting with the porters - they are loved and respected by all, which ensured we had a most memorable adventure . ”

“ Wow! what an unforgettable experience. From the challenge of the track and the amazing scenery to the unique villages along the way, I enjoyed every minute of the trek. It is hard to imagine the fierce battles that were raging in a place of such peace and tranquility. Olly is very passionate about the history of the track and honoring the soldiers who fought for our country in this incredibly rugged landscape. Thank you Olly and Billy for your very professional approach in preparing for our trek, and for your organisational and leadership abilities during our time in P.N.G. ”

“ I recently completed the Kokoda track with my family and found it an incredibly rewarding experience. Ollie and his crew were incredible at keeping us all motivated, upbeat and very well cared for. I've completed a number of group treks before and found Adventure Bound as the most personable and compassionate crew who very clearly take care of their local staff and their trekkers. The Kokoda track is incredibly scenic with such rich history, all of which Ollie explained so well we were moved by the magnitude of events that had happened at each location. To do a trek like this with my family was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'd highly recommend it to everyone! As Ollie would say, you'll hardly even notice the hills! ”

“ My family and I just came back from a most wonderful adventure. Back in November 2017 we decided we were going to do the Kokoda Trek, so after much research of the many trekking companies we chose Adventure Bound, and wow, it really was a great adventure. Billy and Olly helped us with all the preparation, and after six months of training our start date finally came. The whole trip went very well, the food was great, we always looked forward to the next meal and plenty of it, especially for my son Big Ben, the group size was good with a great bunch of people and Olly was there to help any of us at any time and to answer all our map questions and his knowledge of the war history and jungle war tactics was excellent. The porters were a fantastic contribution to the trek, very caring people. Altogether it was a trip of a life time trekking with my wife and 2 adult children, 9 days spent in paradise. i will happily be recommending Adventure Bound tours to anyone interested in doing the Kokoda Trek.”

“ I came to this trip wanting a challenge for myself, but finished up with with so much more than just that the physical challenge I came for. The Stanley ranges are such a beautiful place to Hike, the scenery are amazing, rivers, swamps, rain Forrest and mountains it's all there. The history of the place, from the old mail trail in the 18 century to the battle fields in second world war are amazing, but it's very humble experience to hear about the battles and sacrifices there took place in these hills in 1942, these stories was well told to our group by Guide Olly, a experienced soldier himself, the services at brigade Hill & dawn service at Isurava will stay in my memory forever. The interaction with our porters on the trip and the locals we met in the villages along the trail plus our trip to Soputa village are other unforgettable memories from this trip. From be beginning of the trip in Cairns to the finish, I felt very comfortable with how to trip was run by adventure bound tours, all the information from training to equipment required on trip was provided. Good information session in Cairns on first day to the daily briefings on the trip was excellent, the team of local porters & cooks supporting us on our trip were helpful, polite and easy going, plenty of great food all trip, equipment supplied by Adventure bound was top notch and the tour group was a nice sized up to 12 hikers only plus crew . I was really happy that I chose to travel with Adventure Bound Tours for my Kokoda experience, I highly recommend this company to other Hikers.”

“ Once David & I made the decision to do Kokoda the research began. We have never done an adventure holiday in a group before but found that Adventure Bound had everything we were looking for and they just felt right. We asked our kids(mid 20’s) if they wanted to come along and they were keen for the adventure. The trip itself was very well organised with Olly being flexible based on situations that arose. Every member of the group was treated equally and respectfully regardless of ability level and personal need. We learnt a lot from Olly with his knowledge of the Kokoda campaign and wars in general. The memorials at Brigade Hill and Isurava really highlighted the sacrifice of our diggers and the fuzzy wuzzy angels. It was a beautiful family experience for us and an emotional time of achievement when we walked through the Kokoda gates together at the end. The track itself is spectacular with the added experience of the lovely villages we passed through. We had done a fair bit of training in the months leading up to starting but were still a bit anxious about how hard it would be and whether we could cope with the intensity (we are in our mid 50’s). In the end we all coped well and didn’t find it to be the difficult struggle we imagined it would be. Even though there were long days of walking it wasn’t at a fast pace so we could fall into a rhythm behind our lead porter Jack and try to look up occasionally instead of concentrating on our feet. There are regular stops to talk about the campaign, cross rivers or just rest. The porters were an experience unto themselves and I would highly recommend having a personal porter. Not only did it make the trek easier but it added a local dimension where you had someone looking out for you and helping you when needed. They were genuinely concerned for our wellbeing. The food was amazing – Freddie is a wonder! ”

“ We're a family of 4 that recently completed Kokoda, Anzac Trek, with Adventure Bound. Our trek was made possible with the experience and organisation of Olly, Billie and their fantastic PNG porters. This trek proved to be physically and emotionally testing, made easier with fancy equipment and cooked meals that our troops didn't have the luxury of, this alone gave you perspective as you walked the track. Olly's historical knowledge of battles along the track gave us an insight of what our troops endured, reminding us of their sacrifice, strength, courage and tenacity. Something we will forever be thankful for. Two highlights of our trek was the service at both Brigade Hill and Isurava. Both were moving and special and something we will never forget. We experienced beautiful terrain, gorgeous village life, always feeling welcomed. To Olly, Billie and your fantastic personal and food porters, thank you for going above and beyond to look after us! Food was amazing, Freddie and his crew are just awesome! Adventure Bound is the best!! Special mention to our fellow trekkers....what a great bunch of people you are! Thanks for the laughs, one-liners and camaraderie.”

“ I am Greg Chamberlain and a participant in one of the most amazing, humbling, life changing experiences with a bunch of people who will forever be in my heart and soul. The Trek - hardest thing I have completed in my near 50years.... even harder with a broken knee from day 2 on the trail. The constant climb and even steeper declines were character building and created a whole new meaning to testing the metal of ones strength! The accomplishments- achieving the daily goals, learning of the history along the way, inspiring others to continue forward .... I am so forever grateful to the opportunity to share something so connecting - spiritually, emotionally and physically. Olly - the man has done his research and imparts knowledge and history along the track like it should be delivered - as if we are there..... The porters - we were / are privileged to have one of the most professional proficient capable group of locals - decendants of the orginial Fuzz Wuzz Angels to assist, guide and inspire to achieve the outcome as one. The family - a group of people aging 16-54 all with a vision to achieve a dream. This group is by far the greatest humans I have had the honour of working together with since leaving the military..... the youth aspiring to learn and us older folk with a vision to achieve.... I love this group unreservedly. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and will be there in a heart beat for any of group that needs assistance or support, as they gave me.... Heaven Hell Life Saving ”

“ It is hard to put into words the experience of walking the Kokoda track. It is tough, challenging and can be emotional , listening to the stories of the events of WW2 told with so much passion by Olly puts into perspective the difference between us with our state of the art boots, backpacks and walking poles and those who fought and gave their lives for our country/freedom. Olly's amazing knowledge of the different battles fought on the track helped us understand, even if only a small amount , what our diggers experienced. On the 2017 side of things the scenery, the villages and the terrain has to be seen to be believed. Spending 10 days in such an amazing place with close family and friends was a once in a lifetime experience, the planning and organisation done by Adventure Bound Tours led by Olly on the track with his amazing band of PNG porters, guides and cooks (great food) and Billy back at home answering our many nervous pre-trek questions could not be faulted. If you have any thoughts of experiencing this amazing place, as they say DON'T DREAM IT-- DO IT. And I reccommend doing it with the Adventure Bound Tours team.”

“ If anyone is considering doing the Kokoda track I would highly recommend Adventure Bound Tours. Olly and Billy from start to finish make the whole experience seamless. Olly's passion and knowledge of the track was mind blowing. I took away from my experience of the trek knowledge, mateship and a sense that I can believe and achieve so much when under extreme pressure. And be able to push myself far beyond what I could ever imagine. The porters were always there to lend a hand on the ups and downs and cook some incredible meals every day and night. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much Olly and Billy.”

“ Kokoda... where can I start.. My experience with Adventure Bound Tours was only positive. From my initial contact all the way through. Olly and Billy run a quality outfit, equipment, food, porters, historical knowledge, did I mention the food. Tough, will the Track challenge you ? More than likely, I'm 67, trained for 12 months, glad I did. Found it tough going at first but got stronger as we progressed. When you are advised to train on hills.... train on hills! Or as close as you can to it. Porters look after you, all the crew are friendly and helpful. Yes they speak english. I developed a comeradery with a group of strangers who have now become close friends. On the Track the people are really friendly, always a smile. Olly's knowledge of the battlefields is comprehensive to say the least, with frequent stops and small side trips to discover artefacts. I went on an Adventure I will always remember, thanks Olly and Billy and all the PNG crew. Would I do it again... thinking about it. ”

“ The initial support, logistics and answering of all my stupid questions was handled extremely well by Belinda (Owner/Operator and admin. guru for Adventure Bound Tours). We stayed in and staged out of Cairns, which was a blessing after seeing Moresby, and were trekking on the first day on arriving in PNG. It was a short “cultural and physical intro” day. Am I ready for this? Can I handle 9 more days of this? Well the truth is without the calm, professional encouragement and obvious experience of Olly (Owner/Operator and Head Guide for Adventure Bound Tours), it would have been a struggle for all of us. The blisters, stiff joints and tied muscles soon faded to insignificance with Olly’s passionate stories and intimate military knowledge of the Diggers that came before us. What an honour to walk in their footsteps. A trip of blood, sweat and tears (well mainly sweat) testing and fulfilling. My Tips: Porter? 100% yes! Tested hiking shoes? A must! 3B cream and spare knee brace? Well worth the 100g. Adventure Bound Tours? Shit yeah, without a doubt!! Thank you Olly and Billy for the Awesome experience, I’ll be back in 10yrs with my 2 boys. ”

“ I was privileged to be invited to join a group, mainly comprised of the family of my daughter's partner , to "do" the Kokoda Track. Ollie and Billy, of Adventure Bound Tours, had the arrangements under control from start to finish. Our group consisted of eleven trekkers. On the track, Ollie was confident and capable without being "gung-ho" ; his military background brought an extra dimension to explanations about the military history of Kokoda. It seemed that he had a great rapport with his team of porters, and with the local people. He gave us regular and clear briefings about what to expect each day. He also had an understanding of and respect for the social and cultural issues of significance to the porters and the other local villagers. Our porters were a great bunch : attentively helping with set up of tents ; helping on the track with those like me who needed a bit of a hand with some of the more difficult terrain and river crossings; carrying all the food and cooking great meals on open fires ( including scones and cakes !! ) ; entertaining us with beautiful singing most nights in four-part harmonies ; the list of their achievements could drag on.... With respect to the food, I was particularly surprised and impressed at the culinary accomplishments of the chefs, having previously spoken to ex-trekkers who had given me very negative feedback about what I might have expected. A particular highlight of the overall trip was the cultural experience on our last night in PNG at Soputa village, where we were entertained like royalty by the villagers. I will remember it as one of the toughest mental and physical challenges of my 60-odd years , particularly when one of my knees ( not unexpectedly ) decided to become a bit dodgy after the first couple of days. But to help me along I received excellent support and encouragement from Ollie, from my personal porter and the other porters in general, and from my fellow-trekkers. I would thoroughly recommend a trip to Kokoda to those with any interest in Australia's military history, and particularly those whose relatives may have served in New Guinea, but also to anyone who might be seeking a personal or group challenge. Having done the trek with Adventure Bound , I would find it hard to see how it could be done better. Our tents and other equipment were good quality and I believe we received great value for money. ”

“ As someone who has never had a 'physical' holiday before, this was a fantastic experience. Belinda was great at answering all the silly little questions and Olly's organisation made the whole trip run smoothly. I enjoyed every part of the trip, from the trek itself to meeting the locals. Olly's army background provided us with an extra insight which I feel would have been missed by other companies. Although outside our comfort zone, Olly's knowledge of the country and it's people made for a much more comfortable trip than expected. The porters were fantastic, especially the cooks and personal porters. It was great to be able to get to know them and how they live their lives. The local's welcoming nature, Olly's ability to converse with all members of the group, and the spectacular scenery made for an unforgettable trip. I highly recommend Adventure Bound Tours!! ”

“ The 10 days of our Kokoda Trek with Adventure Bound were some of the most physically, mentally & emotionally challenging days of our life. We were hot, wet, sweaty, muddy, we have laughed (a lot!), cried (a little) and made some great friends. We couldn't have made it without the help of our porters who truly were our fuzzy wuzzy angels. We have been lucky enough to see a beautiful, untouched part of the world and its people. Olly was a great leader with excellent knowledge of the area and the history & was always looking out for the welfare of all the team. Billy provides excellent administration pre & post trek and can answer any questions or concerns. I would definitely recommend trekking Kokoda with Adventure Bound. ”

“ It can be very hard to find just the right words to describe,.. yet justify how amazing some experiences can be,... I recently returned from my Kokoda experience with Ollie and six others trekkers. We had stunning weather which allowed me to admire the beauty of the "Kokoda Track" and take some HD footage that I'll treasure forever. To understand, even to a small degree what the soldiers of war during the Kokoda Campaign had to endure carrying over 50 Kgs on their backs and a rifle at the ready can be very difficult while trekking this unforgiving terrain. We were so well taken care of by Ollie and all our Porters. They made it very enjoyable and I couldn't believe the history Ollie had for us at numerous checkpoints throughout each and every day. How he remembers it all I'll never know... If you're looking at an Adventure second to none,.... A journey that will test any hiker experienced or not, a Destination that does not come without its endurance, fatigue and the mental strength required,... then you need to make contact with Ollie and Billy and discuss this further. I returned from my Kokoda experience felling more accomplished than any previous undertaking of my life. Thank you Ollie and Billy for the most memorable tribute to the men who saved our country. Many Thanks,”

“ Doing Kokoda with Adventure Bound was the best experience of my life! Such a well organised 10 days, full of interesting comments on the battles that took place from Olly. This is a must do trek for anyone who wants to challenge themselves and understand the importance of the ANZAC legacy. If I choose to walk the trail again I'll be doing it with Adventure Bound. ”

“ Having recently completed the 2017 ANZAC trek with Adventure Bound Tours, I can’t help but continue to share my experiences with family and friends. To say that I was impressed by the logistics and planning behind this trek is an understatement. Billy and Olly run a highly professional family business which I found to be well organized from the moment I sent my first nervous email until hopping onto the plane home at treks end, glowing in my achievement…completing Kokoda is both an emotional and physical achievement. On the track, Olly’s military experience and relaxed demeanor enable him to enthusiastically deliver well researched historical facts regarding the numerous battles and incidents that occurred during the Kokoda campaign. His respectful relationships with the local guides (including head guide Stanley), and the food carriers/cooks and porters ensured everything ran smoothly, and ensured we were welcomed with open arms into all of the villages we visited. The emotions that you will experience during this trek will be at times overwhelming. From climbing and ascending lung burning steep ranges and ridge lines, listening to local school children sing at the end of a long day, recovering in icy highland creeks, participating in a commemorative Brigade Hill service, and finally crossing under the arches at Kokoda with your new life long mates. You will be immersed in the wartime history and local culture of this unforgettable journey, that I hope to one day do again with my family. Thanks Billy and Olly. ”

“ Words can hardly express the experience that is the Kokoda track as presented by Olly from Adventure Bound Tours. From the hectic hustle and bustle that is Port Moresby to the epic battles along the track. A history lesson of the Kokoda campaign, the tactics employed, the units involved, the ground covered, the weapons and equipment used. From Ower's Corner, Imita Ridge, Ioribaiwa, Menari, Brigade Hill, Eora Creek, the magnificent memorial at Isurava to Kokoda, all portrayed in laymens terms without compromising on the history by Olly. A spiritual journey retracing the steps of my forefathers. It was so much more than a trek, by hiring a porter I could slow down and take all in, the mud, the history, the culture, the beautiful mountains, sparkling fresh water creeks, epic crossing at Brown river, the hospitality of the local villages, the tribal welcome at Soputa village, swim at Kumusi river and the magnificent porters; always there to lend a hand, put up your tent and had the billy on for a much looked forward to cuppa. By far the best journey I have had and am so proud to walked the track with my brother. From woe to go it was seamless and very professional. Thanks Billy and Olly. ”

“ Not sure what to write here because its hard to put the whole tour into words... My father, cousin, best mate and another mate and of course myself and Dad went on a Kokoda tour with Adventure Bound in April 2017 coinciding with ANZAC day. Olly, Billy and the whole team in PNG put together and delivered a money cant buy experience. The care, attention to detail and planning that goes into everything is breath taking. If you want to do Kokoda or an adventure tour these guys are the bee's knee's. ”

“ Thank you Adventure Bound Tours for one of the best trekking experiences I have had, Ollys knowledge and passion for the Kokoda track was truly a highlight, his ability to explain the battles and hardships on the track so the whole group understood was very much appreciated. I would definitely recommend hiring a porter as it frees you up to take in the beautiful sights of the country, and makes the track more enjoyable. Olly has a great crew led by Stanley his head guide , Freddie is a magician in the kitchen, the porters are awesome, always there to lend a hand when the going gets tough. I would highly recommend Adventure Bound Tours to anyone thinking of doing the Kokoda track, Olly, Billy and the rest of their crew are great to deal with and have helped create a memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life! ”

“ On an impulse a few months ago I decided to trek the Kokoda Track. I checked out a few trekking groups but was drawn to Adventuer Bound out of Cairns. Olly, ex SAS, and his wife Belinda are the force behind this company. Olly's military experience was pivotal in my selection and he was just fantastic on the trek. The porters like the Fuzzy Wuzzy's from the war, were amazing. They probably saved us falling a dozen times per day. A hand would come out and grab our pack to steady us. They were always happy and friendly and ready to assist. I got to have great admiration for these amazing people. Olly would stop and show us in layman's terms how the battles evolved. It was surreal to be there where it all happened and he brought it to life from Owers Corner to Kokoda. He would take us off track to see old munitions dumps and dugouts of both Aussie and Japanese troops. The camp grounds and villages were amazing. After we cleaned up in either the creek with the crystal clear water or the village pipe, Freddy, the cook, would have the billy boiling and an amazing meal cooked for us. We would then sit around the campfire telling yarns as only Aussies can do! Sometimes the villagers would come and sing to us and on many a night, we went to sleep in our tent with the sounds of the porters singing. This was a very memorable journey which I will never forget. I had a great leader with Olly and fantastic team mates and porters. I am so glad that at 68 I was able to hold my own on the track and successfully complete the journey.”

“ My experience walking the Kokoda Track with Adventure Bound was everything I hoped for. Olly has a great wealth of knowledge about the military history of the track. He is able to explain it so that it is easy to understand and get an idea of the hardships our soldiers endured and the enormity of their accomplishments. He also knew when a bit of quiet encouragement was needed to help over a difficult patch. Adventure Bound were very well organized right from the time of our initial inquiries. The pre-trip advice was spot on including the training guide. I found the equipment list extremely helpful. Having the correct equipment can make a huge difference to your comfort and enjoyment of the trek. I was pleasantly surprised by the food. Who knew you could cook cakes and doughnuts over a campfire. The porters were all exceptionally friendly and always ready to assist. Now here's some unsolicited advice; I strongly recommend hiring a personal porter. Not only do they carry your big pack, they also set up and take down your tent every day, fill your water bottles from the best places (usually a bit away from the track), and help you over the difficult creek crossings and slippery/difficult bits. You will form a special bond with your porter and provide valuable income for the local people, the descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. My lovely porter even knitted me a hat while I was relaxing at night. (Can't promise that for everyone). I wanted to walk from Ower's Corner to Kokoda, the direction of the Australian advance. Adventure Bound is one of only a few companies that go in this direction. Finishing your trek by walking under the arch at Kokoda is a feeling that can't be described but is certainly worth experiencing. So go do it! ”

“ The team from Adventure Bound Olly , Belinda and Mace provided not just a tour but an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life . This began with the first interaction 6 months ago and to the moment we arrived back in Cairns. The sharing of what really happened on the ground and the context behind why tactics were used throughout the campaign gave the trek the edge. Anybody considering walking the track should look to Adventure Bound Tours for a truly authentic experience. ”

“ The beauty of the Country, the history behind the trek, and the physical challenge of the hike are all bought together with guides like Chook and Mace, with their significant, and relatively recent military combat experience, adding a touch of reality when it comes to explaining the numerous significant battles fought, the tactics employed, and weapons and ammunition used. They also have a great local crew on the ground in PNG who were extremely helpful. The information and assistance from Belinda during the preparation process was also great. Highly recommended. ”

“ My wife and I just completed the Anzac Kokoda Track hike with Adventure Bound Tours. What an awesome and unique experience. We cannot speak highly enough of the staff, who really made the journey something special. The tour ticked all the boxes … incredible location with stunning landscapes, great guides, well organised, good food, quality tents and excellent commentary of the war history of the track. The military background of Olly and Mace, added an extra insight into strategies and tactics used by both sides and really helped bring history to life. We feel every Australian should experience the Kokoda Track and Adventure Bound Tours are the company to do it with! ”

“ Walking the Kokoda Track is an experience I’ll never forget, and made possible by Olly and Adventure Bound Tours. Ollie’s military background provides an excellent insight of warfare tactics used by the Australian and Japanese soldiers during the Kokoda campaign, and his passion for adventure makes this an exciting and interesting trek. A special mention must go to the porters and cooks used by Adventure Bound Tours who at the end of each day were fantastic in setting up camp and arranging meals. Word of warning if Olly says “angulating hills ” it means there is very steep hills ahead. A thoroughly amazing walk made possible by the well organized and equipped business of Adventure Bound Tours. ”

There was a good depth of info on all aspects of the trek from both tour leader and porters. My tip for future trekkers is use a native porter to carry your main pack. This will ensure a more relaxed and enjoyable trek as well as providing a source of income for the village men and their families. GO FOR IT….you won’t regret it!!!”

How Much Does It Cost to Trek the Kokoda Track?

If you’re planning a trek along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, it’s important to budget carefully to ensure you have enough funds for the journey. In this guide, we’ll break down the costs associated with a Kokoda adventure, including flights, accommodation, and campsite/facility fees.

Airfares and Transportation Costs.

One of the biggest expenses associated with a Kokoda Track adventure is the cost include international flights, domestic flights / transportation. Depending on where you’re traveling from, flights to Papua New Guinea can be quite expensive. Once you arrive in Port Moresby, you’ll need to arrange transportation to the start of the trek, which can also add to your costs. It’s important to factor in these expenses when budgeting for your trip.

Accommodation and Food Expenses.

Accommodation and food expenses are important factors to consider when budgeting for a Kokoda Track adventure. Depending on the tour operator, it may be included in the fees or may be an additional cost. If it’s not included, expect to pay around $20 to $30 aud per night for basic stay along the trail. As for food, most tour operators provide meals as part of the fees, but it’s important to confirm this beforehand. If meals are not included, budget around $10 to $15 per day for food. Keep in mind that prices may vary depending on the location and availability of supplies across the Kokoda trail.

Kokoda Trail Trekking Gear and Equipment Costs.

In addition to flights and food expenses, gear and equipment costs are also important to consider when budgeting for a Kokoda Track adventure. Some essential items include a sturdy day pack, hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and a headlamp. Depending on the quality and brand of these items, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1000. It’s also important to consider the cost of hiring a porter to carry your gear, which can range from $50 to $100 per day. Overall, budgeting for gear and equipment can add up quickly, so it’s important to plan ahead and prioritize the most essential items.

Miscellaneous Expenses and Tips.

In addition to the major expenses like flights and trekking fees, there are also some miscellaneous expenses to consider when budgeting for a Kokoda Track adventure. These may include travel insurance, vaccinations, and visa fees if you are traveling from outside of Papua New Guinea. It’s also important to budget for any souvenirs or gifts you may want to purchase along the way. Finally, don’t forget to factor in tips for your guides and porters, who work hard to make your adventure a success. A good rule of thumb is to budget around 10% of your total trip cost for tips.

Some other costs for your trek may include:

Kokoda Track Inclusions, Permits and Fees.

Before embarking on your Kokoda journey, you’ll need to obtain a permit from the Papua New Guinea government. The permit fee varies depending on the time of year and the number of trekkers in your group, but it typically ranges from $350 to $500 per person. In addition to the permit fee, you’ll also need to pay a trekking fee of $100 per person per day. This fee covers the cost of maintaining the trail and providing support to trekkers. Keep in mind that these fees are subject to change, so be sure to check with the relevant authorities for the most up-to-date information.

Food and Water.

When trekking Kokoda, it’s important to stay hydrated and fueled with nutritious food. You’ll need to bring enough water to last you for the entire trek, as well as a water filtration system to refill your bottles along the way. You may also want to bring electrolyte tablets to add to your water for added hydration. As for food, it’s recommended to bring high-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, and energy bars, as well as dehydrated meals that can be easily prepared on the trail. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pack out all of your trash, so choose foods with minimal packaging.

Hiring a Guide or Porter for your Kokoda Trek.

Hiring a guide or porter is a common practice when trekking Kokoda. A guide can provide valuable knowledge about Kokoda history and culture of the area, as well as help navigate the trail. If you engage a personal porter to carry your gear, it can allow you to focus on the history of the Kokoda trail itself. The cost of hiring a guide or porter can vary, but expect to pay around $150-$200 per day for a guide, $250-$350 per day for an Australian guide (or Australian trek leader), and $50-$75 per day for a porter. Keep in mind that these costs may not include food and stay for your guide or porter, so be sure to factor that in as well.

Choose the right Australian or Kokoda tours trekking company and package.

When it comes to planning this lifetime experience, choosing the right trek operator and trek package can make a big difference in your overall costs. Some companies offer all-inclusive packages that include everything from transportation to meals to camping equipment, while other trail operators offer more basic packages that require you to bring your own gear, cooking equipment and food. It’s important to do your research and compare prices and services to find the best fit for your budget and needs. Keep in mind that cheaper packages may not always be the best value, as they may not include important services or have experienced guides.

Be aware of additional costs and fees.

When planning your journey, it’s important to be aware of any costs for additional items and fees that may not be included in the package. For example, some trekking companies may charge extra for airport transfers, trekking permits, battle site or porter fees. It’s also important to budget for any necessary gear or equipment that you may need to purchase or rent, such as hiking boots, a backpack, or a sleeping bag. By being aware of these additional costs and fees upfront, you can avoid any surprises and ensure that you stay within your budget.

Understand the Different Booking and Trek Itinerary Options.

Before you can accurately budget for your PNG itinerary, it’s important to understand the different trekking options available. The most popular expedition is the 96-kilometer Kokoda Track, which typically takes between 8-10 days to complete. However, there are also shorter and longer expeditions available, as well as alternative times that may be less crowded. It’s important to research and compare the different options to determine which is best suited for your preferences and budget.

Look for Ways to Save Extra Money.

While a Kokoda journey can be a significant investment, there are ways to save money without sacrificing the quality of your experience. One option is to join a group trek or seek group rates at your time of booking, which can be more cost-effective than going solo. Additionally, consider traveling during the off-season or shoulder season when prices may be lower. Finally, be sure to shop around for the best deals on gear and equipment, and consider renting items instead of buying them outright. With a little planning and research, you can enjoy a memorable Kokoda journey without breaking the bank.

Consider alternative optional extras for transportation and stays.

One way to save money on your Kokoda journey is to consider alternative options for transportation and your stay. Instead of flying directly into or out of Kokoda Station, you could look into taking a cheaper flight to a nearby city such as Poppendetta and then taking a bus or taxi to the starting point of the trail. Additionally, instead of staying in expensive hotels or lodges, you could consider camping or staying in local villages along the way. This not only saves money, but also provides a more authentic cultural experience. Just be sure to research and plan ahead to ensure safety and comfort.

Understand the Total Cost of the Trek.

Before embarking on your cultural journey, it’s important to understand the total cost involved. This includes not only the cost of the journey itself, but also flights, visas, travel insurance, gear, and any additional expenses such as meals and souvenirs. Research the average cost of each component and create a budget that takes into account any potential fluctuations in price. Be sure to also factor in unexpected expenses and leave some wiggle room in your budget to avoid any financial stress during your journey across the Kokoda track.

Inclusions and exclusions are two important factors to consider when attempting to determine the cost of trekking the Track. Before making your booking, it is essential that you understand what is included in the package and what is not. Generally, some inclusions may be meals, guide fees, transportation costs and entrance fees. Conversely, other expenses such as airfares, travel insurance and personal equipment may be left to your discretion.

It is imperative that you do thorough research on the tour companies offering packages for hiking Kokoda before making a booking decision. This will enable you to find a company that suits your budget while still providing value for money services. Additionally, considering some of the hidden costs associated with these expeditions can contribute greatly in helping you make an informed financial choice. Ultimately the goal should be finding a reputable company with a track record of successful expeditions at reasonable rates which cater to all or most of your needs during this excursion experience.

History of the Kokoda Trail

The history of the Kokoda Trail is deeply intertwined with the events of World War II. In 1942, during the Pacific campaign, the Japanese forces were rapidly advancing towards Australia. In order to protect Australia’s northern border, an allied defense line was established along the Kokoda Track, a remote and treacherous path through the rugged Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea.

The Kokoda Trail became the setting for one of the most significant and grueling battles fought during World War II. Australian troops, known as the ‘Diggers,’ were tasked with defending the Trail against the advancing Japanese forces. The battle for the Kokoda Trail lasted for months and involved intense fighting in harsh and unforgiving conditions.

The Australian soldiers fought with remarkable courage and resilience, despite being greatly outnumbered and facing extreme hardships including formidable terrain, dense jungles, heavy rainfall, and rampant diseases. The battles along the Kokoda Trail were characterized by close combat, ambushes, and guerrilla tactics.

The relentless fighting and the harsh environment resulted in countless casualties on both sides. The Kokoda Trail became a symbol of heroism and sacrifice, as the Australian troops valiantly held their ground, preventing the Japanese forces from reaching Port Moresby and ultimately turning the tide of the war in the Pacific.

Kokoda Tour Operator Rankings & Reviews

TripAdvisor has judged Adventure Kokoda to be the No.1 tour company on the Kokoda Trail over the past 5 years.

TripAdvisor has judged Adventure Kokoda as the No.1 tour company on the Kokoda Trail for the past 5 successive years. According to the PNG Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) Adventure Kokoda is the only Australian trekking company to operate legally across the Kokoda Trail in PNG. Prospective trekkers therefore need to adopt the Latin phrase ‘Caveat Emptor’ i.e., ‘let the buyer beware’ when choosing a company to trek with.

Prospective trekkers therefore need to adopt the Latin phrase ‘ Caveat Emptor ‘ i.e., ‘ let the buyer beware ‘ when choosing a company to trek with.

Unfortunately, in recent years incompetent management within the PNG Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) has led to an increase in low-rent Kokoda tour operators cashing in on the market and degrading the value of the pilgrimage.

A trek across the Kokoda Trail should be regarded as a respectful pilgrimage in the footsteps of the brave – through a rugged jungle shrine linked to our Australian military heritage in the ‘ land of the unexpected ‘!

It should not be degraded as a ‘ bucket-list’ item ; a ‘ Tough Mudder ‘ event; or a ‘ bogan challenge ‘ complete with guitars and cringeworthy ‘ Ozzie, Ozzie Ozzie – ‘Oi, ‘Oi, ‘Oi’ chants.

The jungles of Papua New Guinea can be a dark and foreboding place for the unwary. During the Kokoda campaign darkness came swiftly as the overhead canopy didn’t allow any form of twilight to penetrate below. Fires were forbidden because the glow of embers and the smell of dank smoke could betray a position to the enemy.

Before the transition to darkness each day soldiers would lie still during ‘ stand-to ‘ in shallow pits lest the enemy used the cover to launch a surprise attack. The silence in such an environment is deafening – until virtual ‘ battalions’ of cicadas (known to the diggers as ‘ 6 o’clock crickets ‘) pierce the air with shrill buzzing calls lasting for up to half-an-hour. For the first-timer in the jungle it can be unnerving but it soon becomes part of the normal cycle of activity as they acquaint themselves with their environment and the sounds of nature.

Speak to any veteran of the Templeton’s Crossing campaign and they will quickly ask if the ‘ 6 o’clock crickets ‘ are still around.

They still are – but they now have competition from a new species of ‘ chanting bogan s ! ‘

Chanting bogans are keen to tick the Kokoda trek off their bucket list and get across as quickly and as economically as possible. Low-rent Kokoda operators seem to target the bucket-lister market because they are low maintenance. They don’t want anything more than a superficial introduction to the wartime history – in fact they don’t want anything that will detract from their ego driven mission of “ doin’ Kokoda mate “!

Just as the peace of a ‘ stand-to ’ was often shattered by the ‘ 6 o’clock crickets ‘ during the Kokoda campaign the solemnity of a battlefield presentation or service is now disrupted by chanting bogans shouting ‘Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie – Oi, Oi, O i’ as a form of ‘reveille’ or to keep cadence as they stomp on by. Those on a historical pilgrimage across the trail have cause to cringe when they are unfortunate enough to encounter these bogan war cries during their treks.

Six O’clock crickets have endured for centuries and will continue their shrill orchestra for centuries to come. It is hoped that the new bogan-chant, ‘Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie – Oi, Oi, Oi’ will not be as long lived.

How to Identify a Bogan Trek Operator

They wake up to a ‘bogan reveille’ . . .

they hug each other and grunt out a bogan chant . . .

they yell it out . . .

kokoda trail adventure tours

they never let up . . .

if they’re not chanting, they just pull out their guitars and sing . . .

The most reliable guide for assessing the integrity of Kokoda tour companies is firstly to see if they are legal as this could void your travel insurance and the Public Liability Insurance policy of the company (if they have one!). Follow these basic steps to check:

  • Click on this PNG Investment Promotion Authority (APA) link ;
  • Click on the ‘Online Services’ tab;
  • Click on ‘Search Foreign Enterprises’ tab;
  • Type in the name of the Kokoda Tour company and click on ‘Search’

If the name of the company does not come up in the search the company is operating illegally in PNG !

2020 Trip Advisor Rankings

TripAdvisor is the next most reliable check as this is a platform dodgy Kokoda tour operators cannot control – reviews for each tour company can be found on this link – the ranking for each one is in the following table:

How to Spot a Bogan Operator

Bogan operators are generally not familiar with the military history of the Kokoda campaign. They have no understanding of the ‘phases of war’ or the principles of each phase. As a result, they are unable to provide more than a superficial briefing at each battle-site.

They cover this professional deficiency by diverting the attention of their trekkers with ‘singalongs’ from their PNG support crews or using ‘ motivational chants ‘ and ‘ group hugs’ as a form of ‘group bonding ‘.

TripAdvisor reviews reveal that trekkers are less than impressed and probably feel conned – they also realise that a refund is out of the question!

Other tell-tale signs of a ‘bogan operator ‘ are:

  • The frets on the necks of guitars sticking out the top of backpacks among your PNG support crew – a dead-set giveaway.
  • The lack of a full trek uniform (cap, t-shirt, and shorts) professionally printed) – bogan operators usually go cheap with a few t-shirts, but nothing else.
  • Check where your PNG guides and porters are sleeping after dinner – if they are snug in their huts with a zippered sleeping bag and foam sleeping mat provided by their tour operator, they are legit – but if they have to bring their own blanket to keep warm, you’re with a bogan company.
  • Check the weights of the backpacks among your PNG support crew – if they weigh more than 18 kg (the maximum allowed during the Kokoda campaign) you’re with a bogan company.
  • Ask your PNG support crew how much they get paid – if it’s less than PNGK70 per day (plus a bonus of PNGK70 at the end of the trek) and a ‘Walk-Home Allowance of PNGK 250 – you’re with a bogan company.

Your adventure begins in the capital of Port Moresby with a welcome meeting tonight. An airport arrival transfer is included in the price of this tour. Please speak to your booking agent to organise this no later than 14 days before your tour begins. Attend the pre-trip briefing this evening at 6 pm to meet your fellow travellers and trek leader.

This morning take a short, spectacularly scenic chartered flight over the jungle canopies and craggy peaks of the Owen Stanley Range to the landing strip of Kokoda station (approximately 35 minutes). Arrive and meet your trekking team, including your your personal and food porters. Kokoda, situated at 340 metres above sea level, is a hot and humid place, but there’s a nearby river to cool off in if you need. There is free time explore and visit the Kokoda Memorial and War Museum this morning before the trek begins, where you’ll learn a little more about Kokoda station. This spot held importance during WWII due to having the only airfield along the track, and the opening stages of the Kokoda Track campaign saw two battles take place in and around the village. Australian forces reoccupied Kokoda in November 1942 as the Japanese retreated to the north coast. After lunch, lace up and set off for the village of Deniki (4–5 hours). Begin with a flat walk through rows of palm oil and rubber tree plantations, passing through Kovelo and Hoi villages before the first steep ascent up the Owen Stanley Range. Deniki village is a historically significant location where the 39th Battalion first regrouped when Japanese forces occupied Kokoda. At 900 metres above sea level, you’ll be greeted with incredible views across the Kokoda Valley upon arrival, giving you the chance to pause and reflect on all that occurred here.

Commence the first full-day trek with an early start towards Isurava village. Pass through choko gardens planted by local villagers and by water holes where you can fill up your bottle. Your trek leader or porters will let you know the best fill-up points. Arrive at Isurava (1350 metres), a village relocated several times since WWII which now sits in a tranquil location with good access to water and sunshine. Continue to the famous Isurava battlefield and stop for a break to learn about the significance of the site. A powerful memorial built by the Australian Government features four pillars, reading ‘Courage, Sacrifice, Mateship and Endurance’, words you are sure to carry with you for the rest of your journey. Hear the story of the heroic Private Kingsbury, a real estate agent from Melbourne enlisted to fight in New Guinea. Kingsbury gallantly volunteered to clear a path through the enemy, allowing the Australian troops to regain their control, only to lose his life to a sniper’s bullet. Private Kingsbury’s courage earned him a posthumous Victoria Cross, and is one of many stories of unbelievable tragedy and bravery you will encounter on your journey. Continue to the village of Alola (at 1400 metres), which overlooks the Iora Valley and Auberi village, which is where you will spend the night.

The trek to Templeton’s Crossing begins with a walk through lush rainforest and past creeks and rivers that feed directly out of mountain springs. Follow the hilly trail to Eora Creek, where the tranquil landscapes are in stark contrast to the two brutal battles that took place in 1942, resulting in the loss of many Australian lives. Take a break here to learn about the battles and perhaps freshen up in the river before continuing along the track. Three more hours of hiking will lead you to Templeton’s Crossing, the location of the Australian supply and storage facility during the war. Templeton’s Crossing also served as a burial ground for Australian soldiers lost during the Battle of Eora, and while the bodies were relocated at the end of the war, symbolic iron rods remain in the place of each soldier once buried at the site. Tonight will be spent at a cooperative guesthouse in Lokobo (at 1900 metres altitude).

Get set for a tough day of trekking as you climb to a 2200-metre-high point on the flank of Mt Bellamy, also known as the Gap. Be sure to stay close to your personal porter while navigating the ascent. Take in some spectacular views across the Owen Stanley Ranges and descend a few hundred metres to your accommodation at Digger’s Camp. Set among lush rainforest, the village guesthouse is still around 2000 metres above sea level, so it can get very cold. Take a quick walk to the flat grasslands and creeks of Myola, a location that played a pivotal role in WWII, being used for supply drops and to tend to the sick and injured. You could once find the scattered remains of old aircrafts around Myola, however these have since been salvaged by locals for scrap metal. Head back to Diggers' Camp and enjoy a dip in the river before dinner.

Rise and shine and set off towards the northern face of Mt Bellamy, taking in views of the villages of Naduri, Kagi, Brigade Hill, and Nauro along the way. Make a 2-hour descent to Efogi I through open grassland and along steep, slippery trail, with a brief break en route in Naduri. Enjoy a well-deserved rest on arrival at Efogi I, a staging post where troops stopped overnight during their advance along the Kokoda Track. Keep some change handy so you can buy some of the organically grown fruit the locals sell. Continue the trek to Efogi II with a roughly 2-hour descent. While this leg of the trek is relatively short, it will take place in the middle of the day and the trail has no canopy protection, so pace yourself. Arrive in Efogi II, a Koiari village of around 500 inhabitants, and settle into your locally-owned cooperative accommodation.

Embrace an early start this morning to trace the path taken by retreating Australian soldiers. The first climb takes you to Mission Ridge where you can turn and look back over Efogi I and II. Continue following the ridge towards Brigade Hill. Upon reaching Brigade Hill (approximately 1.5 hours), your trek leader will relate the wartime history of the spot where Australian forces were overwhelmed by fast-approaching Japanese troops. Hear how 20,000 soldiers marched down Mt Bellamy, their thousands of lanterns resembling a sea of fireflies to the Australian troops. This swift and efficient advance saw the Japanese take complete control of Brigade Hill in just a few days. Begin the descent down the back of Mission Ridge to Menari (approximately 2 hours) on a steep and sometimes very slippery track. Grab lunch and then set off again on a steep, 1.5-hour climb to the top of Menari Ridge. Enjoy the mental boost that comes with knowing you’ve ‘broken the back’ of the Kokoda Track, then make a descent to the Nauro Valley (approximately 1 hour). Cross the mighty Brown River to Nauro and cool off in a pleasant stream near your cooperative guesthouse accommodation near the original airstrip.

Tackle the Nine False Peaks to the top of Maguli Range (1350 metres) this morning. This involves roughly 3 hours of serious uphill trekking. From the top of the ridge, make the first of many descents today with a rest stop at Jap’s Ladder. Take another break at Ofi Creek and continue on to historic Ioribaiwa, situated at approximately 650 metres. It was here that the Japanese troops fought their final victorious battle against the Australians before withdrawing. From Ioribaiwa continue down a steep slope that leads to Uaule Creek. At the base of the Ioribaiwa Ridge make our way across a myriad of river and creek crossings (nine in total) until we reach Uaule Creek and set up camp for the night.

Your journey starts across multiple river crossings along Uaule Creek. Come prepared with sandals or expect wet boots. Continue with a trek up the back of Imita Ridge for about 1.5 hours. From here, trek down a trail once known as the Golden Staircase, built by Australian troops during the war to transport artillery and supplies from Port Moresby. Take a break at the summit of Imita Ridge then descend to Goodwater. Continue to Goldie River (3 hours), then make the final climb to Owers Corner. Congratulations! You can now officially say you completed the Kokoda Track! Meet with your driver and transfer back to Port Moresby, stopping en route to visit Bomana War Cemetery, where 3600 Australian soldiers were laid to rest. This evening perhaps grab a well-deserved drink with your team and fellow trekkers. Cheers!

Your adventure has come to an end. Check out of the hotel is at 11 am and transfer to the airport can be organised on request. Just let your leader know your flight details this morning.

Anthony Albanese travels to PNG to walk historic Kokoda Track for Anzac Day

Anthony Albanese will this week become the first sitting prime minister to walk the historic Kokoda Track. Here’s why that matters.

Anthony Albanese will make history this week when he becomes the first sitting prime minister to walk part of the gruelling Kokoda Track.

Accompanied by his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape, Australian Defence Force representatives and a select number of media, the group will walk from Kokoda Village through the unforgiving jungle to Isurava Village.

It’s there he will join Australians and Papua New Guineans for the annual Isurava Anzac Day service on Thursday.

His trip comes with a diplomatic element at a time of intense competition in the region and just days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited the small Pacific nation on the weekend for the first time since 2022.

But as he prepared to board his flight, Mr Albanese said the trek would allow him to pay respect to the Australian service personnel who fought and died during the important Second World War battle of Kokoda.

What is Albo doing?

After attending an Anzac Day commemoration dinner hosted by Mr Marape on Monday, Mr Albanese will begin his 17km track on Tuesday morning.

Although just a small section of the 96km total trail, for two nights Mr Albanese will camp in the same places Australian soldiers did when they fought off the invading Japanese.

On his first day, he will pass through the Hoi Village and camp overnight in Deniki.

Then, on Wednesday, Mr Albanese and his travel companions will continue the walk to Isurava ahead of Thursday’s Dawn Service.

Ahead of his departure, Mr Albanese said being accompanied by Mr Marape “says a lot about how close the relationship is”.

“We’ll be paying tribute to the courage, the endurance and the sacrifice which Diggers made in World War II,” he said.

“Anzac Day is a sacred day for Australians, but it’s also a day that is commemorated in Papua New Guinea. And our relationship is very strong.

The track is 96km long, but Mr Albanese will walk just a section of that before Anzac Day. Picture: Supplied

What is Kokoda?

The Kokoda campaign, which began in July 1942 and went until November, was part of Japan’s attempt to capture Port Moresby when it was an Australian territory.

For Australian forces, holding Port Moresby was crucial in defending Australia.

“Kokoda is the stuff of legend,” Mr Albanese said on Monday.

“As young Australians, we all learned at school the legendary status of those brave soldiers who fought against the odds at Kokoda.”

It began when the Japanese landed in Buna and Gona on the north coast before they made their way over the Owen Stanley Range – a mountain range that separates the northern part of the country from the south.

Over four months, the Australian and Japanese forces fought along a number of foot tracks, including at Kokoda, Deniki, Efogi, and Isurava.

Papuan Infantry Battalion soldiers fought alongside Australians, while thousands of civilians – who became known as the “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” – provided support, carrying supplies, building bases and evacuating the sick and wounded.

The Battle of Isurava – where Mr Albanese will mark Anzac Day – was the scene of some of the most intense fighting during the Kokoda campaign.

An estimated 99 Australians were killed and 111 wounded over six days in August 1942.

Australian forces re-entered Kokoda on November 2, and November 3 is now commemorated as Kokoda Day.

Scott Morrison in 2009 on the Kokoda Mateship Trek.

Mr Albanese will become the first sitting prime minister to walk the track, but some of his predecessors have visited the region before. Paul Keating famously kissed the ground at the Kokoda Memorial when he visited in 1992, and John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull both visited memorial sites during their prime ministerships.

Kevin Rudd walked the track while opposition leader in 2006 alongside then-government minister Joe Hockey. Scott Morrison walked the trail in 2009.

Politicians, police and national security figures have all backed tougher age limits on social media, but researchers say otherwise.

In a case of life imitating art, Joe Biden’s latest gaffe has channelled Will Ferrell’s buffoonish newsman character in the classic 2004 comedy Anchorman.

The Trump campaign may have “reason for concern” after a largely ignored election in one state this week contained a worrying message.
