10 Things You Should Be Doing When Visiting Long Island, Bahamas

Long Island in the Bahamas is not short of surprises, thanks to its tropical wonders, and there are so many things to do.

Long Island in the Bahamas is not short of surprises, thanks to its tropical wonders. It is the country’s “hidden gem,” a refuge in a destination that’s already almost heaven. The Caribbean nation has over 700 islands , all offering unique tropical attractions. One must-visit is Long Island because it’s not just about beaches but also history. The island is also one of the country’s districts, so tourists can expect services and accommodations that make for a satisfying sunny sojourn. It has rocky headlands, white-sand beaches, swamplands, and hills, all working together to deliver a Bahamian adventure unlike any other.

10 Beach Day

When visiting the Bahamas, what else to do but experience its beach paradise? On Long Island, for instance, tourists can spend their day appreciating the pristine beauty of Cape Santa Maria Beach.

The Telegraph said it’s the best on the island , so visitors are assured of satisfying sun-kissed memories.

The crescent beach spans four miles, making it an ideal playground for those who want to walk in the sunshine. Beyond the shores are more wonders, like snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing. Long Island’s beach knows how to deliver.

9 Bonefishing Bonanza

The Bahamas is all about relaxation, peace, and such , but it’s also home to thrilling outdoor moments. After all, it has the pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean as one big playground.

On Long Island, tourists who want to do more than just a beach day can wade the shores to score a bonefish. The expert guide will take them to the flats, where their gilled friends await them.

Those who want more challenges can join a boat charter that will take them to Bahama Bank, where anglers can test their skills.

8 Meet Underwater Friends

Its location in the Caribbean makes the Bahamas more than adept at delivering superb diving moments . Wherever tourists start their underwater journey, this Atlantic charmer’s waters are ready to serve.

Long Island has the Conception Island Wall, a stunning diving site where explorers are sure to be awestruck. The island also has Stella Maris Resort, one of the longest-running dive operations , which is more than ready to take them to new underwater friends hiding in coral reefs.

Marine life is thriving on Long Island, making any scuba saga satisfying.

7 See Wreck Diving Wonders

Other than coral reefs, Long Island also has a wreck diving site that will wow underwater explorers. MV Comberbach, located 100 feet deep in Atlantic waters , was deliberately sunk in 1984 by Stella Maris to attract scuba divers .

This British freighter near Cape Santa Maria is now a thriving home for fish, awaiting tourists who want to take a few snaps of the stunning ship.

Divers can even pair their journey with other underwater experiences, like shark diving. What a treat.

6 Be Awestruck By Dean’s Blue Hole

Dean’s Blue Hole is an inviting natural wonder that’s a must-visit destination on Long Island. This Bahamian attraction is the world’s second deepest hole , a 663-foot magnificence surrounded by a beach.

Its blue waters, the ocean’s turquoise waters, the greenery, and the white sand all work together to create a masterpiece only Mother Nature can deliver.

What takes the cake, however, is when tourists dive in, or those who don’t dare to do so can just swim, float, or dip their toes while enjoying the scenery.

5 Visit Twin Churches

Clarence Town is the capital of Long Island, and it’s home to twin churches that are the embodiment of the phrase, “simplicity is beauty.” St. Paul’s Church was built by an Anglican priest, who later designed its twin Catholic church when he converted to Roman Catholicism.

The twin-towered structures are both 40 feet and can be climbed by tourists after having a solemn moment inside the churches. Once atop, they’ll have a stunning 360-degree view of the island, feeling blessed more than ever.

4 Check Out Columbus Point

History buffs will also enjoy exploring Long Island because of its rich stories of the past. The island is believed to be the third one "discovered" by Christopher Columbus , describing it as the most beautiful in the Bahamas.

To commemorate the said historic event, locals erected the Columbus Monument at Long Bay, where the explorer anchored his ship.

After touring around the breezy area, visitors can head to the island's museum next, where they'll have an introduction to its culture, history, and traditions.

3 Be One With Nature

The Bahamas seems like a paradise already , but those who want more quiet moments should head to nearby Conception Island from Long Island. Conception is home to a national park teeming with marine wonders, like mangroves and stag-horn corals.

Tourists can wade through its shallow waters while observing the seascape. The area has pink-sand beaches, sandstone cliffs, and wildlife. Columbus also landed on this island, and just like tourists of today, he was probably mesmerized by the convincing beauty of Conception, too.

2 Sailing Journey

Those visiting in June are lucky because the sea becomes one big playground for sailors. The three-day Long Island Regatta attracts sailors and tourists from many parts of the world . This annual event showcases the stunning ways of the sailors as they play with the waters and the wind.

This activity also celebrates the boat-building tradition of the Bahamas, something to interest those who want to learn something new. Aside from the competition, the Caribbean Sea is also perfect for those who want to charter a boat and enjoy the views of the ocean, be it sunrise or sunset.

1 Go Caving

Long Island is not all about the beach and underwater adventures, as it has Hamilton's Cave, the largest cavern system in the country . This archeological site is believed to be a settlement of Lucayan Indians around 500 A.D., and parts of it are yet to be explored — an enticing prospect for spelunkers and archeology lovers.

Guided tours can be had in this natural wonder, with the expert taking explorers to stunning stalagmites, stalactites, and passageways. Those who want to brave the night can even join an evening tour so they can check out bats.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Long Island, Bahamas

Have you ever been to the real bahamas.

I don’t mean Nassau or Freeport, though the big cruise ports can be a certain kind of fun. I’m talking about the Out Islands… Exuma, Eleuthera, Andros, Abaco, Long Island, Bimini and others. Most folks don’t realize that there’s a long list of inhabited islands that aren’t Paradise Island or Grand Bahama, and that’s a crying shame because it’s some of the most stunning scenery you’ll find anywhere in the world.

NOTE: Want to help The Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian ? Click here for my list of trusted organizations who are helping rebuild.

Out there in the Out Islands, the pace is slower than in the bustling ports. Hotels are laidback and often family owned. You often have miles of unspoiled beach to yourself. The people are just the best.

About Long Island, Bahamas

Long Island has an epic history, serving as one of Christopher Columbus’ first stops in the New World. Before he arrived and called it Fernandina, the Arawaks named it Yuma. When the conquistadors took the Lucayan residents as slaves to other islands, Long Island was mostly uninhabited until the Simms family arrived in 1720. You can still visit the Simms settlement and their very descendants to this day.

Later, British Loyalists from New England migrated to The Bahamas and started the first plantations. They didn’t last long and once slavery was abolished, they were all but abandoned.

The island became a salt production hub in the 18th century, evaporating sea water in salt pans and using it as a preservation agent in the time before refrigeration. (Like Bonaire, another favorite island of mine !) Today, the economy mostly focuses on tourism, but there are no huge resorts or chain restaurants. It’s a truly Bahamian, barefoot, authentic place to visit.

Long Island Bahamas Bar

I have an epic history with The Islands of the Bahamas, too, as most of you know. I’ve been to almost every major Out Island and Long Island is a favorite. It’s a destination I absolutely, unequivocally adore and continue to advocate for, though I haven’t worked with the tourism board since 2010.

Click here to watch the video from my last project with the island.

I’ve had some of the most fun moments of my life with the most wonderful people in the world in The Bahamas. I’ve eaten a metric ton of conch, swam with sharks, turtles, sting rays and pigs , and even got married and honeymooned here. There have been countless epic work trips and yachts, broken bones and scandals, life-threatening emergencies and beauty pageants, run-ins with Donald Trump, Billy Bush and Flo Rida, dance parties and untimely death investigations. If you thought our hot mess destination wedding  at Bahama Beach Club was the whole story, you don’t know the half of it!

I still haven’t found anywhere in the world whose beaches compare to The Bahamas , especially in the Out Islands.

One of my favorite destinations in the whole country is Long Island, an 80-mile long slice of island time. On our last trip to The Bahamas, we spent a few days checking out Baha Mar in Nassau. (Verdict: it was alright. Big, flashy, expensive and if you only went there, you wouldn’t really experience authenticity of the country.) As a Bahamas expert, I knew this going in, so we planned the lion’s share of the trip on Long Island. We hopped a small, inter-island flight from Nassau to Stella Maris and I immediately felt right at home again.

On Long Island, it’s no surprise when folks you meet remember you 10 years later. And they remember how big the tuna was you caught last time – really! You quickly figure out who’s related to whom, and who’s daughter works at the grocery store and which restaurants are open on which nights.

Where is Long Island?

Long Island is in the southern Bahamas between tiny Rum Cay and Great Exuma. The eastern shore is open to the Atlantic, so limestone bluffs meet crashing waves on much of the coast. On the western shore, it’s a different story. Tranquil, white sand beaches with flats and mangrove swamps abound. For such a narrow island, the changes in geography are notable. Both coasts are stunning! And the Tropic of Cancer runs through the island, to give you an idea of Long Island’s latitude.

How to Get to Long Island

Long Island, Bahamas, is easily accessible by air from Nassau. Between BahamasAir, Southern Air and Stella Maris’ flight service, there are flights most days to the two airports on Long Island, Deadman’s Cay and Stella Maris. This can be a bit confusing as many of the flights touch down at both airports and barely make mention of that fact. On our trip, we met a man who didn’t realize there were two stops on the flight from Nassau – first in Deadman’s Cay, then on to Stella Maris in the north. Poor fella got off the plane in Deadman’s Cay and then had to take a taxi to Stella Maris. A $90 mistake!

It takes about 45 minutes to fly from Nassau. Airfare can be pretty expensive and inconvenient to get to the Out Islands, but it’s one destination I find worth the trouble.

There’s also a mailboat from Nassau to Long Island, but unless you’ve got lots of time, flying really is the best option. The trip takes up to 15 hours depending on the weather.

Where to Stay on Long Island, Bahamas

Stella maris resort.

I have loved this property since my first visit more than 10 years ago when I bought a group of journalists to the island for a fishing press trip . And what I loved back then, the authenticity, the comfy island feel and the views of crashing turquoise waves on limestone cliffs, all remained.

ong Island Bahamas - Stella Maris Resort

There’s a variety of available accommodations, from traditional hotel rooms to 4-bedroom homes overlooking beaches, cliffs and private pools. I’ve stayed in both the Dolphin House and the Rainbow House and you just can’t get more breathtaking views. Plus your own pools!

Stella Maris is basically its own little village. There’s an airport so convenient you could very nearly just walk right from the plane to the hotel. There’s also a full-service marina, restaurants and bars, kayak and snorkel rentals for guests, a post office and Long Island’s only fishing outfitter.

Things to do on Long Island, Bahamas

Bonefish with docky.

One of the main reasons I wanted to return to Long Island was for the bonefishing. Now if you know me, you know I don’t give a hoot about fishing, but Rick is super into it. His fabulously generous wife got him an awesome fly rod setup for his birthday and he was itching to use it on the grey ghost of the flats, the elusive bonefish. I knew from past work trips that Long Island had some choice bonefishing so we returned with rod and reel in hand and a full day of fishing booked with Docky.

Long Island Bahamas - Rick Normoyle bonefish

Having fished this area for his whole life, Docky was a great teacher and managed to guide newbie Rick to two small bones during the course of the day. It wasn’t a big haul, but for a beginner, it was enough to be worth it. (And to create a monster — all he wants to do now is fly fish!)

Docky also has a few swimming pigs so if you don’t make it to see the famous swimming pigs of Exuma, he can still help you check off your bucket list. Make sure you also visit Docky’s Flats Bar one night for shenanigans, Kaliks and souvenirs.

Dean’s Blue Hole

Dean’s Blue Hole is the No. 1 attraction on Long Island, Bahamas. The white sand is gorgeous, the clear water as beautiful as anywhere in the islands… but what makes it so special? I’m glad you asked!

Long Island Bahamas Deans Blue Hole

This swimming hole is 663 feet deep, so if you placed Trump Tower on the bottom of the blue hole, you could splash on the roof of the 58th floor and wave to your friends on the beach!

Sitting in the clear, shallow water on white sand, this could be any beach in The Bahamas. But scoot two feet from my flippers and the white sand begins a quick descent into darkness. It goes from knee-deep to 50 stories deep in a matter of steps. If you can swim, it’s no big deal. You just slide down until you’re treading water over the abyss. Take extreme caution if you can’t swim though. Many have been caught off guard by the unexpected drop off.

Long Island Bahamas Deans Blue Hole

The water is clear as you can see, but light doesn’t make it down very far. As you snorkel from the shallows over the middle of the blue hole, you don’t see much but inky blue abyss. It’s rather dramatic, but such a unique Bahamas adventure. If you make your way to Long Island, I think a swim here is a must. I’ve done it lots of times! Just don’t think too much about what lies beneath. It’s probably fine.

Long Island Bahamas - Deans Blue Hole

Columbus Point

Long Island was one of Christopher Columbus’ first stops in the New World in 1492. You can drive up to Columbus Cove (currently unpaved but I heard they’re paving it) to visit a monument at plaque commemorating Columbus’ visit. It’s interesting to note there isn’t the same distaste for Columbus in The Bahamas as there is in other Caribbean nations, namely the Dominican Republic .

Long Island Bahamas Columbus Monument

The best part of this side trip isn’t the plaque and monument, it’s the view! It’s absolutely stunning in all directions, and with no developments inside the harbor or anywhere within sight, it must be quite similar to what Columbus would’ve seen on his first visit.

Max’s Conch Bar & Grill

If you’re not allergic to shellfish, you absolutely must stop for a fresh conch salad at Max’s on the way back from Clarence Town. Rick and I are actually obsessed with conch salad, so we are becoming real aficionados at this point. And Max does it right. We like it on the spicy side and paired with a local Kalik or Sands, or a sky juice (gin and coconut water) to take the bite from those hot Caribbean peppers right out.

Scuba Diving

Long Island is known for exceptional diving, both out on the reefs and inside Dean’s Blue Hole. I’ve never been in either, but we’re definitely going out with Stella Maris on our next visit.

Hamilton’s Cave

The Bahamas may be known for turquoise water and a host of other things, but its underwater cave system is really an unexplored treasure. Hamilton’s Cave on Long Island is one of the biggest known caves in the country, with areas up to 50 feet wide in spots. Evidence of Lucayan inhabitants was discovered here in the 1930s. South of my favorite settlement, Salt Pond, when you visit Hamilton’s Cave, be sure to hire a guide to give you a tour. If not, you will end up lost!

Clarence Town Churches

There are two historic churches worth a visit in Clarence Town, the capital of Long Island. Population: less than 100. There’s St. Paul’s Anglican Church, whitewashed with two towers, and St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Church, whitewashed with two towers. You’re forgiven if you’re a bit confused. They’re very similar and very close by, so you can visit both on a pass through Clarence Town.

Long Island Bahamas - swimming pigs

Getting Around Long Island, Bahamas

Unless you’re planning to stay at your accommodations the entire time, it makes sense to rent a car so you can do some island exploring. And since the hotels are pretty much no-muss, no-fuss (read: not Sandals with every activity you could want), you’ll likely want to get offsite at least part of the time. We rented an SUV for two days with the express intention of driving south to explore Clarence Town and Dean’s Blue Hole one day and north to Columbus monument and Cape Santa Maria the next. It worked out perfectly and cost about $100/day plus gas.

The SUV was a must because Long Island’s roads are quite rough, even the main highway can be pitted in spots. There are no large rental car chains on Long Island, so the easiest way to get a car is reserve through your hotel. Stella Maris reserved the vehicle for us and it was waiting at the hotel when we arrived. Couldn’t have been easier!

Taxis are available, too, but since Long Island is in fact, quite long, that can get pricey. Bite the bullet, rent a car and drive on the other side of the road. It’s easy when there’s very little traffic and no stoplights on the entire island.

Long Island Bahamas

Our trip to Long Island was our first visit back to The Bahamas since our destination wedding , and I was just so relieved it was everything I remembered from previous visits. Wild, rocky coastline to the west with gorgeous sunrises; white sandy beaches to the east with colorful sunsets; and my old friends at Stella Maris ready with conch and Kalik and our own private pool. The Bahamas may have its shortcomings, but it’s hard to remember them when you’re on island time.

Tell me: have you been to Long Island, Bahamas? Would you swim in Dean’s Blue Hole? Have you ever been bonefishing? I wanna hear about it in the comments!

I LOVE Stella Maris!! I first went there in 1978 and met friends I continue to see today. The staff was and is today the BEST! Accommodations are perfect, food is delicious, scuba diving fantastic, fishing awesome, beaches are unbelieably beautiful as is the beautiful water. A little pricy but well worth saving for. Enjoy your stay and pass you adventures in this Paradise on to friends.

Angie, I’m so happy you love our island as much as we do. We would love to keep it as a real island…not too much commercialism but just enough to sustain…you feel me!

Hello Angie, We are thinking of going to Long Island in May. If we stay at Stella Maris is the ocean there too rough? We are used to Treasure Cay so would like a home on a calm beach. I enjoyed your blog very much. John

long island bahamas tourism

The Stella Maris side of the island is rougher than the other side, but there are spots that are calmer. I always like to split my time on Long Island – half at Stella Maris because it’s just so beautiful with all the rocks and waves, and half on the other side at Cape Santa Maria. When we were there in December, the weather was so windy, it didn’t make much difference which side of the island you were on! But I imagine in May things will be calmer and warmer. You’ll love Long Island either way. Don’t forget to stop by Docky’s Flats Bar for a drink and some conch salad – they’re right by Stella Maris!

Have fun and thanks for reading!

Hi, Was wondering if you had any insight or updates on the beach front development in Long Island , Coconut Bay

long island bahamas tourism

Good to see your review of Long Island Bahamas. It is a magical place. Did you get to go through the snakes, see where the nurse sharks breed in early June? The eagle rays that stay year round? There is so much to see and explore all the way down the island. North and South offer different views to the island life and the surrounding waters. Most visitors staying a week can get in about half the island exploring off the road beaches. Compass Rose is a spot for families and couples to enjoy! Gordons beach has a conch nursery. If you decide to do a revisit please give me a shout.

Why Long Island should be your next Bahamas vacation

Hidden among the more than 700 Bahamian Islands, Long Island is a quick charmer. With technicolor blue waters and lush greenery, this island offers the seclusion and utter beauty few islands these days can offer. The 80-mile oasis is just a 45-minute plane ride from Nassau .  Here’s the best way to enjoy this hidden paradise.

An aerial view of Dean's Blue Hole and the surrounding cliffs. There is a white floating platform in the middle of the water; Long Island Bahamas

What to eat

Conch fritters, conch salad with fruit, traditional conch salad, conch salad with a kick, steamed conch – an introduction to the favorite local dish will happen quick. Sure, there’s plenty of fresh fish plucked right out of the sea, but in Long Island, you eat conch. Stay long enough and you’ll become a connoisseur.

A sign with 'The Diva's Spot' sits in front of a table and wooden bar covered with palm leaves. There's a white SUV parked on the grass on the right; Long Island Bahamas

Where to eat

The diva’s spot .

Sometimes dining isn’t always about the food. Though rest assured, the fresh seafood is fantastic. An evening at The Diva’s Spot in McKanns on Queens Highway is the very essence of Caribbean hospitality. The unassuming outdoor restaurant sits right next to the water with wooden benches and tables to eat. The small bar faces the kitchen and is the best seat in the house.

Whether she’s chopping onions or frying up conch fritters Mrs. Tryphena Bowe-Knowles is always in full command. Hugging patrons or ordering others about her kitchen, it's all a wonderful show. And after you’ve had your fill of conch, fish and hometown spirits (try the Diva’s Kiss), if you’re lucky, Mrs. Tryphena (as everyone calls her) will sit right next to you and share stories about her life as night settles.

Hours: Wednesday-Saturday (hours fluctuate)

Max’s Conch Bar & Grill

You can tell how much people love a place by the stuff they leave behind. The bar at Max’s Conch Bar & Grill is filled with hats, t-shirts, license plates and other random knick-knacks that are more charming than corny. The roadside establishment located on the Deadman’s Cay Settlement in McKanns has ample seating and offers an array of dishes like jerk chicken or pork, fried shrimp, pepper steak and of course, conch (this one packs a punch). There's plenty to sip on as well, though you can't go wrong with a rum punch.

What to do

Dean’s blue hole .

The second-deepest blue hole in the world doesn’t garner much fanfare on the island. Just a simple wooden sign with blue paint signals the road to Dean’s Blue Hole .

The expansive dark blue abyss that reaches 203 meters (666 feet) sparks wonder with a dash of fear and the water is so clear you don’t really need goggles to see the fish that boldly swim right up to you – but you should put on the goggles. Scuba diving is allowed and best done with a buddy.

There are no long lines, no expansive parking lot, no entrance fees – premium access for all.

Top tip: The drop off is quick and can be unexpected. Be mindful with youngsters and non-swimmers. Contact the Long Island Tourist Office for any questions or information about the blue hole.

Hamilton Cave

The Bahamas’ largest cave system has a history that dates back to the Lucayan Indians who called the caves home in 500 AD. Located a few hundred feet off Queen’s Highway, Hamilton Cave is very much alive with five species of bats, lizards, soda crabs (some dangling from cave ceilings), crickets and roaches.

Thick tree roots hang from cave openings and slick stalactites continue to form from the steady drip of saltwater in the cave. You’ll need a guide to venture inside and Leonard Cartwright is the man you call. The native Bahamian has been leading tours for 37 years and somehow still enjoys every trek into the cave.

Nothing brings a smile to Judith Rigby’s face quite like boasting about her infrequent trips to the doctor. The secret lies in the expertly maintained gardens around her Judee’s Blissful Creations shop. Known locally and throughout the Caribbean as ‘bush medicine’, Rigby has an encyclopedic knowledge of the plants that cure what ails.

There is a collection of plants for purchase in her colorful store, along with handmade crafts made from seashells, glass, sand and whatever else the island has to offer up. The sweet, yet tart tamarind balls and lemongrass lemonade are crowd-pleasers. Watch out for the ‘bush juice’.

Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas

Dean’s Blue Hole is a blue hole located on Long Island in the Bahamas. It is the world’s second deepest blue hole, with a depth of over 663 feet (202 meters). The hole is circular and is surrounded by a coral reef.

Diver William Beebe first discovered the hole in the early 1930s. He named it after the island’s Dean family, who were the owners of the land where the hole is located. Since its discovery, the hole has become a popular destination for divers from all over the world. Many people come to see the beautiful coral reef surrounding the hole and to experience the thrill of diving into its depths. If you’re looking for an adventure, and a chance to see some of the world’s most stunning underwater scenery, then a visit to Dean’s Blue Hole is a must.

Deans Blue Hole is the world’s deepest known blue hole, located on the southern half of the island, minutes from Winter Haven in Clarence Town. This 663-foot deep hole is named for the Bahamian family that owns the property. Free-diving professionals revere this site as it allows them to explore the ocean’s depths.

The hole is formed from rainwater that soaked through limestone bedrock fractures onto the water table during the Pleistocene Epoch, or Ice Age. The Blue Hole is fairly circular in shape at the surface level, with a diameter ranging from 80 to 120 feet. After descending 60 feet, the hole opens up into a cavern with an underwater cave system.

The depths of the hole and the underwater cave system have yet to be fully explored, making it an exciting destination for free divers and scuba divers alike. If you’re looking for an adventure, Dean’s Blue Hole is the perfect place to start!

Long Island, Bahamas Hamilton’s Cave

Hamilton’s Cave is a hot spot for an underground adventure. Run by Leonard Cartwright and his family, this cave system is thought to be the most extensive set of caves discovered in all of the Bahamas and was previously inhabited by the Arawak Indian Tribe. Cartwright’s family purchased the cave property—including 90 total acres—for £27 from the English in the 1840s. Since, the Cartwright family has found numerous Arawak artifacts inside, including dishes and tools. The Cave has a fresh underwater spring, many stalactites, stalagmites, and various species of bats.

To get to the Cave, visitors must first take a short hike through the tropical vegetation. Once at the entrance, they will need to crawl on their hands and knees for about 50 feet (15 meters). Then, they can stand up and explore the rest of the cave system, which includes several chambers and a cathedral-like room with a 50-foot (15-meter) high ceiling.

Hamilton’s Cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Long Island. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or join a guided tour led by one of the Cartwright family members. $15 for adults and $8 for children. You can call (242) 337-0235 or (242) 472-1796 to make a reservation.

Long Island, The Bahamas: The Ultimate Getaway

  • By Gary Caputi
  • Updated: May 14, 2020

Long Island is The Bahamas’ road less traveled. For those who have stumbled across this island gem, that is its allure. Strikingly picturesque, off the beaten path, uncluttered, and within easy reach of some of the best billfishing in The Bahamas, its miles of virtually untouched bonefish flats see almost no fishing pressure, putting Long Island on any angler’s bucket list.

This narrow spit of land sits on the eastern edge of the Bahama Bank, a short run from Crooked Island, San Salvador and Rum Cay, where marlin, monster dolphin and wahoo roam. It has a long history of hosting visiting mariners, dating back to one Christopher Columbus. While not a fisherman, it is believed that after making an initial landfall on nearby San Salvador, Columbus did a little Bahamas sightseeing of his own, eventually setting foot on the northern coast of Yuma , the name given to the island by the Lucayan, Taino and Arawak natives who inhabited it at the time of his arrival.

Long Island is approximately 80 miles from north to south, and about 4 miles at its widest point. The eastern shoreline holds rugged coastline and some of The Bahamas’ most stunning beaches, while the west is dotted with cays, coral heads and bonefish flats that stretch to the horizon.

The center of offshore fishing is the harbor at Clarence Town and the recently expanded Flying Fish Marina . A reliable fuel stop for traveling sport-fishing boats, the marina now offers an expanded range of services. The new two-story marina building sits at the end of a small peninsula, currently with 21 permanent slips behind a seawall, with plans for further expansion.

Flying Fish is managed by Jason and Wendy Edler. Jason is an accomplished sport-fish captain and always up on the current fishing action. A short walk from the marina is the Rowdy Boys restaurant on the beach serving up local seafood and island cuisine; the Friday-night pig roast is not to be missed. A little farther down the road and up the hill is Nana’s Bakery, where you can get fresh island breads and homemade sandwiches.

Jason says the best wahoo fishing is October through mid-March and nearby Columbus Bank consistently produces wahoo to 90 pounds. Yellowfin tuna are in abundance March through May, white marlin in April and May, and blue marlin from May through early July. Simms Bar, also called the Finger, produces a lot of wahoo and a surprising number of marlin only 6 miles from the marina. Bottom- and deep-drop fishing are available year-round, with the typical Bahamian fare of snapper, grouper and wreckfish.

Proximity to so many remote places to fish keeps serious bluewater fishermen coming back to Long Island. Pick a direction and you can be on prime fishing grounds in no time. You can make day trips or overnighters to Conception Island, Rum Cay, Crooked Island and the Acklins. The Diana Bank, an awesome seamount, lies close by and offers some of the most consistent fishing for pelagic species anywhere in The Bahamas. The upwellings it creates start the whole circle of life, with plankton blooms, bait, small predators, and then the tuna and billfish, only a 28-mile run from the marina.

A favorite overnight trip is to Samana Cay, about 70 miles east-southeast, where the tuna oblige and big blue marlin are frequently in residence. Blues to over 600 pounds have been taken there in recent years. You can always find a leeward anchorage to spend a restful night under a vivid blanket of stars.

Ernest Major is Long Island’s greatest information resource. He offers taxi service, guided tours and boat-provisioning services, and is the island historian. His nickname is “Dat Guy,” and he should be on your speed dial for sightseeing, finding the best restaurants and prettiest beaches, hooking up with bonefish guides, or getting to the right places to provision your boat. Call or text him at 242-472-3365.

About 8 miles north of Clarence Town on Queens Road is Lloyds Restaurant , located across the street from the turnoff for Dean’s Blue Hole , the deepest inland blue hole in the world, plunging to over 650 feet. It hosts the Vertical Blue freediving international competition each year in July, but it is a place worthy of a visit regardless of the time of year to drink in its beauty and take a dip in the amazing azure waters.

The center of the flats-fishing community is the Long Island Bonefish Lodge on Deadman’s Cay. It offers accommodations and guided bonefish packages, with fishing that rivals any of the more famous islands. The best part of flats fishing here is the remote location, which means you will rarely see another angler. As the tide recedes, bonefish gather in the deeper channels that feed water onto the flats and continue to feed, so the fishing never really stops.

Farther north, the community centered around the Stella Maris Airport includes restaurants, a secluded hideaway called Tiny’s Hurricane Hole , and the beautiful Stella Maris Beach Resort on the oceanfront. At the extreme end of the island, the Cape Santa Maria Resort is about as secluded as anywhere on Earth, so if getting away from it all is on your agenda, this could be the place for you. And no trip to the island is complete without a tour of the numerous historic churches that abound, some dating back to the 1800s and still in use. Meanwhile, St. Mary’s, thought to be the oldest church in The Bahamas and dating to 1799, remains in stark ruins, the walls and alter still standing under an open sky.

Long Island is an adventurer’s getaway, where there are no crowds, no cruise ships, and some of the finest bluewater and flats fishing in the world. Once you experience it, you will forever want to return.

11 Reasons Why This Small Bahamian Island Should Be Your Next Trip

Iona Brannon

Long Island is not your typical cruise ship stopover.

As one of the top three holiday destinations of 2022, according to travel insurance provider Squaremouth, the Bahamas have been a classic winter getaway for years. The country comprises 700 different islands, though only about 30 are inhabited. Among these 30 islands, Long Island is a compelling top destination. A quick flight from the main island of New Providence, Long Island is a stunning and culturally impactful place. It’s easy to miss if you don’t know about it already, but once you visit, you’ll never forget it. These 11 reasons to visit Long Island don’t even scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

Top Picks for You

It’s Easy to Navigate

Long Island isn’t just the name of this beautiful island; it’s also an apt descriptor. The island runs about 80 miles in length from north to south and at its widest, it’s less than four miles. With one major road, it’s hard to get lost on this island. In addition, the simplicity of the road system is fantastic if you like to explore on your own without fear of getting stranded.

Enjoy a Variety of Landscapes

Surrounded by water, Long Island gives you unique access to its top-rated beach coast on the west and the jagged and breathtaking cliff coast on the east. Depending on what you’re looking for, the dramatic differences in the landscape are within a short drive of each other.

Recommended Fodor’s Video

A perfect exclusive getaway.

With around 3,000 residents, Long Island is quiet almost all year round. So even if you arrive at peak tourism time at the most popular resort, Cape Santa Maria , you’ll find the majority of the beach to yourself. As a result, socially distancing from others in low-risk, outdoor environments is easy here.

The Second Deepest Blue Hole in the World

Whether you like to dip your toes in the kitty pool or if you’re a professional swimmer, you won’t want to miss the second deepest blue hole in the world. Dean’s Blue Hole draws people to it as the Internation Free Diving Competition destination every year. Not a swimmer? The water leading up to the 666 feet hole is only about waist deep—just don’t get too close to the edge!

Incredible History to Discover

Long Island is full of historical landmarks, such as St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, the oldest church in the Bahamas said to have been built in the 1600s. Not only is it easy to find from the main road, but it’s accessible to the public, and you can walk among the ruins. If you prefer something a bit darker, you can go underground to the most extensive cave system in the Bahamas, Hamilton’s Cave . The island’s small population also gives easy access to incredible sources of knowledge, such as Hamilton Cave’s owner and tour operator, Leonard Cartwright. Or you can wander to the Long Island Museum, where you get historical and cultural lessons on the Bahamian people and the indigenous Lucayan Indians.

Regatta Brings the Party Home

Regatta is a yearly boat race held on many islands in the Bahamas. When it comes to Regatta, Long Island throws a good party. In fact, it’s the second-largest Regatta in the Bahamas. Every June, the boat-racing festival serves as a homecoming for many locals who have moved away. So if you get a chance, it’s a celebration you should plan your visit around.

Escape the Cruise Crowds

Part of the Bahamas’ reputation is a popular cruise stop. However, the country is so much more than that, and on Long Island, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a ship. This allows for more authentic connections between Long Islanders and tourists who come to visit. On the off-chance that a cruise ship stops by, it’s only there for half a day before sailing off again.

A Birdwatcher's Paradise

Bird watchers will love Long Island’s incredible backdrop for birding, with more than 150 species spotted. The West Indian Whistling Duck is an incredibly gratifying bird to spot, as the largest and rarest of the whistling ducks.

Charter a Private Flight

Long Island has two small airports: Stella Maris Airport and Deadman’s Cay Airport. Although Long Island is not the capital of the Bahamas, it is open to private international planes, which means that you can charter your private flight. You can enjoy the island without stopping by the main island, New Providence, first.

Local Community Vibes

With such a small community on the island, Long Island locals all seem to know each other. So it’s not difficult to enjoy the local community, from the Saturday farmer’s markets to art hubs such as Starfish Traders . Or you can grab a bite to eat and swap stories at infamous watering holes such as Max’s Conch Bar .

You'll Keep Coming Back

Long Island has indescribable magic, evident as most resort guests return every year. The familiarity creates a warm environment even in resort restaurants and bars, as old friends reunite and new friends are made.

INSIDER TIP Try your hand at bonefishing or snorkel around the island at leisure with a charter boat.

The entire Bahamian archipelago is full of historical buildings, monuments and ruins that tell the tale of a time gone by. Long Island Bahamas is no exception to this rule, and you are sure to discover a number of amazing historical attractions during your Bahamas tour of the island. Unfortunately, not all of the attractions have cheerful stories, there are a few that open a window into the Bahamas’ dark past of slavery.

Long Island Bahamas Adderley Plantation ruins. Discover long island on a 3 day cruises from Miami or a private Florida air charters.

Adderly’s Plantation Ruins are a prime example of this. While it may be fascinating to explore this run-down former mansion, it will also remind you of the slave trade in the Caribbean and how it forever changed the islands. Though the past may hold suffering, it’s safe to say that the thriving Bahamian culture and wonderful people would not be the same if it weren’t for their West-African lineage. In fact, there is an annual festival known as Junkanoo which takes place in the Bahamas and celebrates the vibrant and diverse Bahamian culture through colour, dance, music and food.

Fortunately, not all the historical attractions on your Bahamas Island Hopping tour have direct correlations to the slave trade. St Mary’s Anglican Church is a marvellous place to visit during your Bahamas tour. While the church itself may be in ruins, the impressive stone walls still stand, displaying the church’s resilience. Constructed by Spaniards in the 17th century, this church has become one of the island’s most popular attractions whilst visitors island hop Bahamas. A visit to St Mary’s Anglican Church also provides you with an excellent viewpoint of the island and the surrounding ocean, and has even been used as a wedding venue.

Beautiful Eleuthera has long been a favorite Bahamian island with visitors, both for its convenience – multiple airports! endless resorts! – and its stunning scenery. Bahamas: Record-Breaking Arrivals and New Developments

  • May 6, 2024

Chester Cooper

The Bahamian Government is celebrating positive cruise results, with a record-breaking number of passenger arrivals and new investments in ports and destinations.

The country is seeing a renaissance of the industry, Chester Cooper, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, told Cruise Industry News during an exclusive interview.

“The Bahamas is still a magnificent place to visit. For decades, we’ve been saying that ‘it’s better in the Bahamas’ and we are showing that it’s still better in the Bahamas,” he said.

According to Cooper, the country had its best year ever for tourism in 2023, with over 9.6 million tourists arriving at 16 islands.

The cruise business was part of that, he added, with numbers up 43.5 percent for a total of 7.8 million passengers arriving.

“We expect these numbers to continue to grow in 2024, with data pointing to a 30 percent increase over the record we set in 2023,” Cooper said.

7 Ships in Nassau

“It’s credit to our strong brand, the strategies that we are deploying to get people to the Bahamas, our strong team, and our tourism machine with offices around the world,” he continued.

“We are excited about the prospects of continued growth of cruising in our islands and the new developments that are in the pipeline.”

Strong Brand

The country has built a very strong brand around the “beauty and charm of its islands,” he said, noting that the Bahamas has some of the most magnificent waters anywhere on the planet.

Cooper said that the Bahamas uses word of mouth for promotion, with former visitors “becoming ambassadors of the country.”

“I think that’s the most successful way for us to promote the islands of the Bahamas, by ensuring that people have a great experience and going back to share that experience with their family and friends.”

The Bahamas is also working on promotion missions in different countries, including the United States and Canada.

New Developments and Destinations

With several projects currently underway, the country will see new destinations and developments coming online over the next few years.

Cooper highlighted the large development projects currently being carried out by Carnival Corporation and Disney Cruise Line.

With its first phase set to open in mid-2025, Celebration Key is set to serve as a new private destination for Carnival Cruise Line in Grand Bahama Island.

Located in Eleuthera, Lockout Cay at Lighthouse Point will become Disney’s second private destination in the Bahamas when it opens in June.

As part of a partnership between Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and the ITM Group, Grand Bahama Island is set for a new cruise port and water park, Cooper said.

“It will come on stream, hopefully, by the end of 2025 or early 2026,” he explained, also mentioning the Calypso Cove project in Long Island.

“We hope it will begin construction soon, subject to the completion of environmental procedures.”

Under a 25-year concession to Global Ports Holdings, the Nassau Cruise Port underwent a significant development project recently as part of a $300 million investment.

“This is our premium port in the Bahamas, and the investment is paying off handsomely. Some days we have as high as 27,000 guests arriving, sometimes as many as seven ships,” he said.

The country also invested in revitalizing the nearby Bay Street, with enhancements that include demolishing old buildings, refurbishing historical buildings, and creating green spaces, food markets, and themed murals.

Authentic Experiences

While the government feels very positive about all of these developments, it is pushing companies to bring more guests to traditional cruise ports in the country, Cooper said.

“Many of our cruise partners have their private islands,” he noted, mentioning Royal Caribbean International’s CocoCay.

“It’s a nice theme park, but we encourage the cruise lines to combine destinations, visiting one of their private islands and also one of our main ports,” Cooper explained.

“We prefer our guests to see the authentic Bahamian islands like Nassau, Grand Bahama, and Bimini. It’s an opportunity for them to not only experience cruising or the beach but to experience the authenticity of our way of life and the warmth of our people and appreciate our culture and natural beauties,” he continued.

“If you come to the Bahamas and go to one of the private islands, you’ll see the beauty of the water and the beaches, but there’s so much more to see,” Cooper added.

“It doesn’t have to be a situation of either-or; we can have both, and our preference is that the guests experience the authentic Bahamas.”

Homeporting operations

The Bahamas is interested in homeporting operations, which Cooper described as a magnificent idea.

“It works better for the boutique ships,” he added, mentioning a successful operation from Crystal Cruises in 2021. v

“Royal Caribbean did it to some degree of success during Covid. The challenge with the mega ships is that before they arrive, all guests must be accommodated in hotel rooms and that is restrained by the number of rooms we currently have.

“Homeporting is something for the future; it’s part of the Ministry’s strategic plan for the cruise industry, as we build more hotel capacity,” Cooper continued.

For the future, Cooper sees Grand Bahama Island featuring prominently in the growth of the cruising industry in the Bahamas.

“It will be a result of the new infrastructure being built,” he said, mentioning projects from Carnival Cruise Line and the ITM Group.

“By 2028, we’ll see the arrival of approximately 5.5 million visitors to the Grand Bahama Island. It’s a staggering number, as we currently have around 50,000 tourists,” Cooper added.

“There’s also an opportunity for additional berthing at the Nassau Cruise Port,” he said.

“Overall, the future for cruising looks extremely bright. We are encouraging more boutique and smaller cruise lines,” he said.

“We hope to attract more because they tend to cater to a higher-end clientele who wants to come back and stay longer. That’s the space that we are hoping to be able to expand.”

HONOLULU (Island News) -- A Michigan family filed a lawsuit against the Hawaii's Tourism Authority, and other visitor groups, because they don't warn tourists about potential dangers of snorkeling soon after flying.

Every year thousands come to Hawaii, and many take time to snorkel while they are here.

"The waters are so clear here, and I wanted to see what is underneath it. It was really cool, I got to see baby fish," said Karissa Weaver, a first time snorkeler from Colorado.

Because of Hawaii's relatively calm protected waters at popular snorkeling sites, some visitors view it as safe.

"It depends on your equipment. If you have decent equipment, it is relatively safe," stated David Urane, an experienced snorkeler from California.

Equipment can play an important part in that safety. According to the Hawaii Snorkel Safety Study, the shape and design of the snorkel can caused it to have a low to high resistance to inhalation.

The higher the resistance, the higher the risk of developing Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, known as ROPE. That causes lungs to fill up with fluid because of negative pressure, and doesn't allow people to take in oxygen.

It is believed to be one of the reasons why drowning by snorkeling is the number one cause of death for visitors to the islands, more than almost all other ocean activities combined.

But unlike typical drownings where people swallow water, and may thrash around in active distress, those suffering from ROPE can get short of breath, become confused, lose strength and then lose consciousness without showing signs of distress.

"It didn't make sense. When I got the autopsy report, it said drowning. I watched Ray come in. When you are drowning, you are not talking to the people around you," said his wife Patricia.

Patricia and Ray Johnson had been to Hawaii a half dozen times, and Ray had snorkeled in the islands numerous times.

"He was an experienced swimmer and snorkeler. But in February 2022, while snorkeling off Maui he had trouble breathing. A friend helped him to shore, but he died on the beach," stated Jay Stuemke, the Johnson family attorney.

His symptoms are consistent of a ROPE drowning. The Hawaii Snorkeling Safety Study found along with health conditions increasing the risk for ROPE, there is the possibility long flights can too.

Stuemke says that contributed to Ray's death, "What long haul flights do, is it has an effect on your lungs. After 3 days you are back to normal, but if you snorkel after that long flight there is a substantial increased risk of death."

Now the Johnsons are suing not only the hotel where Ray rented the snorkel gear, but also the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Visitors Convention Bureau. The Johnson family feels all of those groups knew about the dangers of snorkeling after long flights, but did not warn visitors.

"If warnings are effectively communicated, snorkelers can make informed choices about what risks to take," added Stuemke.

The snorkel study did not conclude snorkeling after air travel raised ROPE risks, but the study stated it could be a factor and should be looked into further. The Johnsons want every visitor to know about any and ALL potential risks.

"After flying 10 hours, we would have waited 72 hours. His lungs would have recovered from whatever being in a pressurized cabin does to your lungs," added Patricia.
