Best Wildlife Safari Destinations in Malaysia

Rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo are biodiversity hotspot . Taman Negara in Peninsular Malaysia, Bako National Park (Sarawak), Kinabatangan River ,   Deramakot , Danum Valley and Tabin Wildlife Reserve (Sabah) are the best wildlife destinations in Malaysia. Recently we have compared the four most popular safari destinations in the Sabah state of Borneo in the blog post :

Deramakot Forest Reserve or Danum Valley or Kinabatangan River or Tabin – where to go for the best Borneo Adventure?

What animals to see in Malaysia

We organise the best luxury wildlife family safari holidays in Malaysia to observe and photograph the unique animals, birds, reptiles and insects of Malaysia in its mystic rainforests. Nocturnal wildlife is the most interesting character of these destinations, so we focus on night walks on forest floor, night safaris in four wheel drive through unpaved challenging terrain to track down jungle cats on road and also on trees. We also organize night boat cruises alongside the river in search of larger mammals and nocturnal birds and primates.

List of some of the interesting and exotic animals that one can see on a safari holiday in Malaysia with us contains:

Malayan Tapir | Wild Orangutan | Proboscis Monkey | Pygmy Elephant | Asian Elephant | Clouded Leopard | Leopard Cat | Marbled Cat | Flat-headed Cat | Bay-cat | Pittas | Slow Loris | Flying Lemur | Flying Squirrel |  Malayan Civet | Otter Civet | Banded Civet | Binturong | Sun Bear, among others.

Ample comfort in such remote rainforests of penninsular Malaysia and Borneo are provided. Be it chalet rooms in Research Field Centres or at Park Headquarters, or in carefully selected our partner ultra-luxurious Lodges. All arrangements for an adventurous night stay in a Hide (Watch Tower) deep inside the forest is also offered.

As you make your way through the winding roads, take in the stunning views of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Once we arrive in Kundasang, visit the Kundasang War Memorial, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II.

Next, stop by the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm and learn about the local farming industry. After a hearty lunch, lace up your hiking boots and embark on a trek to the nearby waterfalls, where you can take a refreshing dip in the cool mountain water. Return to your cozy hotel for dinner and rest.

Embark on a private four hours drive into a wildlife adventure to a river safari on the Kinabatangan River. Take a boat ride to the island and spend the day exploring the beautiful coral reefs and encountering various marine life. Keep an eye out for the turtles that nest on the island's beaches. After a day of sun, sea, and sand, return to Kota Kinabalu in the evening, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Orangutans, “man of the forest” in Malay, headline an impressive assortment of ten primate species including gibbons, proboscis monkeys, western tarsier, and slow loris. Pint-sized Borneo pygmy elephants roam the forest together with sun bears and the elusive clouded leopard. There are over 600 species of birds, including the rhinoceros hornbill.

Borneo also offers countless beautiful beaches and turquoise waters. Large numbers of sea turtles use the white sandy beaches to nest throughout the year. You may even be lucky enough to witness baby sea turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean! There are opportunities to snorkel with whale sharks and swim in some of the world’s most diverse coral reefs. All of this combines to make Borneo the ultimate island safari destination.

Zoo Taiping & Night Safari

Amazing wildlife encounters at zoo taiping & night safari.

Get a glimpse of the many fascinating wildlife at Malaysia’s oldest zoo, Zoo Taiping & Night Safari located in the state of Perak. Stretching over 36 acres, Zoo Taiping is currently home to over 140 species of wildlife. The zoo was first established in 1961, just a few years after the country’s independence, making it the country’s very first zoo.

malaysia safari

Zoo Taiping & Night Safari is strategically located just around the corner from the famous Taiping Lake Gardens, hence is also encompassed by luscious greenery and serene lakes, which originate from the gardens. Zoo Taiping is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, while its Night Safari operates from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM daily.

Zoo Taiping & Night Safari promotes an open-air concept, where animals are housed and displayed within naturalistic exhibits, which are purposefully built to represent and simulate each animal’s natural habitat.

malaysia safari

At present, over 1,500 animals reside in Zoo Taiping, ranging from reptiles and mammals to birds and fishes. Don’t miss out on the five key exhibits, which come highly recommended namely the Malaysian Rainforest Experience, Lowland Forest, Riverine Forest, African Savanna and the Elephants of the Perak River.

malaysia safari

Here, you will enjoy up-close views of captivating wildlife such as the Malayan tiger, African lions, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, orang utan and many more fascinating creatures.

Each exhibit is designed to house the animals in optimum comfort and security whilst also operating as conservation centres to increase the population of the animals, particularly the endangered ones. Enjoy a calming walk along the 2.5-kilometre trail to fully immerse in the natural beauty of the zoo and its surroundings.

The Night Safari Experience at Zoo Taiping

malaysia safari

Zoo Taiping welcomes you to experience the zoo on their captivating night safari, which takes any zoo experience to another level. Taiping’s Night Safari was officially launched in 2003, making it the first night safari to ever be introduced in Malaysia.

malaysia safari

Taiping’s Night Safari is meticulously designed to give visitors a chance to view the animals in their natural habitats come nightfall. The journey of the Night Safari begins with a free tram ride through the entire zoo to view the animals from a distance. After the tram ride, visitors are free to roam around the zoo to revisit their favourite animals. Taiping’s Night Safari highly encourages visitors to bask in the natural sights and sounds of the wildlife for a more realistic and wholesome safari experience.

malaysia safari

The zoo is also home to many nocturnal animals, which is why when you participate in the night safari, you will likely catch glimpses of them running around actively in their enclosures. Each animal is showcased within their natural exhibits with special lighting, which is similar to the glimmering moonlight so visitors are able to spot the animals with ease.

malaysia safari

Don’t be surprised if you see a few friendly creatures walking alongside you. There are a few bird species that are not kept in their enclosures and are allowed to roam freely along the zoo’s trail. For example, the grey-crowned crane is often spotted strutting along the trail without causing harm to its visitors. As you journey along Taiping’s Night Safari you will also be able to hear the calls of the animals as they roar, croak and purr under the stars. Be sure to listen carefully for the unique sounds of the zoo’s hyenas too.

Dining at Zoo Taiping & Night Safari

malaysia safari

Feeling peckish on your zoo adventure? Fret not as there is a dainty cafe hidden within the zoo’s grounds for you to dine at. Located right next to the elephant enclosure, visitors can drop by the cafe for a quick snack or get something to-go with them. There are also other cafes and restaurants located by the entrance of the zoo. For more local delights, try out Mergastua Restaurant, which serves mouthwatering Malaysian dishes. Looking for a faster option? Zoo Taiping also has a fast food joint, Marrybrown, which is located right next to the Mergastua Restaurant for a quick alternative for those in a rush.

Felix was amazing. Only request was to stay on river longer. It was only one night. Also I hope Borneo works on theirs carbon emissions. I felt like riding on the river I was contributing to carbon emissions from the boats. Also Turtle Island I felt again the boats could hit a turtle. My carbon foot print was very high on this trip. Mountain is not a hike but a climb. Take the brochure seriously and be in shape. Our group was but still took a lot out of us. Be prepared for no hot water or electricity through out the trip.

Real Borneo Tour

Real Borneo

This trip was so much fun! It was really well coordinated with the right amount of free time. The first hotel in kota kinabalu is extremely nice but there are heaps of other cheaper hotels quite close if you're staying an extra day. If you want to see the city, stay an extra day or two as you don't get much time included in the tour. 1-2 days in KK would be enough as it's pretty small. Sepilok is really cool and there are heaps of things to do, however a lot of them are guided tours and they cost quite a bit. If you're trying to save, you could just opt to stay at the hotel as it has a pool and a restaurant. Wifi is only in the restaurant area and rooms have fans, no air con. Next is the eco camp which is really cool as it's right in the middle of the jungle. There are SO many mosquitos so don't think you can get away without repellant. Bring snacks as there's no where to get food outside of meal times. You'll probably also want lots of loose, long clothes to avoid sunburn. The tree planting you do here was pretty average but I guess cool to see. At lunch we got to do a cooking class which was pretty cool. The Batu Tulug caves were nice and worth a visit. The homestay depends a lot on your family but it's great to see how locals live. There's no wifi here or on the river at the eco camp, so if you need to check more than once every couple of days, get a local sim (they're pretty cheap anyway). Next you stay in the Kinabalu national park, which was bloody great for us because we got upgraded to this really fancy room. Once again there's no wifi and you have to buy something at a really expensive restaurant to use it. Food is all buffet here which is really fun. The hike was awesome and you can read reviews on it elsewhere, but some things specific to geckos might put some people off this tour. Firstly, we had some people on our group who had chronic medical conditions such as asthma. They were only told the day before the climb that they wouldn't be covered by insurance and if they wanted to climb it would be at their own risk. If you have something like this, it would be worth getting more comprehensive insurance and clarifying what this means for you with geckos before you go, as only learning about this the day before doesn't allow much time for decision making. Secondly, our group leader decided that we wouldn't go all the way to the summit as the weather was really bad. This was fine as we still got to base camp and got to do another smaller walk, and it's totally understandable of our group leader to put our safety first. However, a lot of other people went to the summit regardless (ie people not on our tour) and so if you're really really keen to get to the top, there's a risk you won't be able to with this tour. The poring hot springs were awesome as there are heaps of things to do there, but mostly the beds are comfortable which you'll need after the hike! The small waterfall (you'll find out when you get there) is awesome and definitely worth the 15 minute walk. The hot springs themselves are sort of gross, especially at the end of the day, as they get sort of dirty and you can see hair in them! So it's worth getting a private spa. There's also no wifi here but local cafes (ie across the road from the resort) have it. It's best to eat there too as the restaurant at the resort is really expensive. On the last day we didn't get back to KK until about 5pm and our guide organised a snorkelling trip for those of us who were still there for the next day which was really really good. Our tour guide, Felix, was absolutely awesome and was so passionate about Sabah and wildlife. This tour is a really comprehensive tour of Sabah and you get to see so much. It may seem expensive per day but we had a lot of transfers (including a flight) and got to climb Mt Kinabalu, and some of the hotels were a lot nicer than expected. One thing to keep in mind is that Malaysia is a Muslim country and for us they were celebrating ramadan at the time. This meant that a few restaurants were closed but we always found somewhere to go. We also got to experience the ramadan bazaars which were really cool! However it would have been marginally easier to go at a different time of year. This is also a great introduction into hiking and wildlife types of holidays if you haven't done that before. Sabah is a great place to travel and this tour makes it really easy and shows you the best bits.

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. Close encounters with wildlife in the primeval forest of Borneo as well as the mangrove forest in Langkawi are second to none; the boat rides with the help of local guides make for a thrilling adventure. Complementing the awesome nature discovery is the cultural immersion in the distinct cities of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown and Langkawi. A candid preview of Malaysia at its awesome best in two weeks! It is hands-down one of the best uses of one's time, energy, money.

Elod was an amazing guide who was clearly focussed on making our time in Borneo the best adventure experience. Insightful, knowledgeable and attentive, Elod made the experience all the more better. We had an excellent time and made memories that lasted a lifetime. The Sepilok lodge was basic accommodation in need of an upgrade. The Bilit Adventure Lodge was much better with staff who were friendly and helpful. Overall a fantastic trip. Thank you

The trip was really great! I didn't realize that I'd booked a private tour, which was kind of a surprise. The accommodations were really cool. The longhouse was my favorite! And the bat cave is AMAZING! All of the transportation was clean and air conditioned. The tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. My guide in Kota Kinabulu was the best! She introduced me to all of these really yummy snacks and told me about local traditions and her English was great! I would highly recommend the air conditioning option, it's really humid there and you do some physical activity and you'll be grateful for the upgrade. Also, bring toilet paper, because Malaysia doesn't really use it. The only thing I'd change is to stay at Sepilok for 2 days and Bilit for 1 day instead of the other way around. There isn't a lot to do at Bilit, just some scheduled boat rides and hikes, but Sepilok has a lot of cool places nearby and they have a pool. Spending a whole day doing almost nothing while having to set alarms for meal times wasn't really a great use of my time. Other than that, it was really great!

What people love about borneo tours.

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.

  • The 5 Best Jungle Treks...

The 5 Best Jungle Treks in Malaysia

Malaysian mossy forest

Malaysia is a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts for its jungles, wildlife and spectacular nature. We round up the top five jungle treks in Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo, from heading deep into the rainforest and scaling mountains, to hiking in the cooler highlands.

Cooler climbs in the cameron highlands, pahang.

The Cameron Highlands sits in Pahang at an elevation between 800 metres (2,625 feet) and 1,600 metres (5,249 feet) above sea level. The cooler air temperature has driven tourism since colonial days as tourists flock to avoid the stifling heat of the lowlands. Hiking paths transverse the highlands offering some of the more comfortable jungle treks in Malaysia.

Visitors can follow trails ranging from short leisurely walks in the rainforest or through tea plantations, to challenging climbs to reach waterfalls or scaling Mount Berembun. First-time hikers who aren’t accustomed to the heat and humidity should consider hiking in the Cameron Highlands for their jungle experience.

Hiking in Cameron Highlands can be a rewarding experience

For a more accessible jungle trek in Malaysia, head to Templer Park, approximately 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur in Rawang, Selangor. Templer Park, named after a former British High Commissioner in British Malaya , provides easy hiking trails passing clear streams and multi-tiered waterfalls. Most routes take between one and two hours to complete. Lucky tourists might see eagles, lizards and several species of birds as well as hundreds of monkeys. Pro tip: Templer Park sits a few kilometres north of Batu caves; combine both on a day trip.

Waterfall in Templer Park located in Rawang, Selangor

Test endurance at Mount Datuk, Negeri Sembilan

Mount Datuk, or Gunung Datuk in Bahasa Malaysia, reaches a height of 885 metres (2,904 feet) in Sembilan, approximately 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of Kuala Lumpur. A steep start gets progressively easier after the first few hundred metres. Several checkpoints and rest stations make the climb more manageable and provide a convenient spot to rest. Red arrows painted onto the rocks point out the route, which makes getting lost almost impossible. A giant rock marks the summit connected to the trail by ladders attached to the rock face. The Straits of Melaka can be seen on the horizon on a cloudless day, but don’t set hopes too high. Hikers need to bring plenty of food and water as they complete the four to five-hour trek; none is available on the mountain.

N111, Kampung Batang, 71350 Kota, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

Head deep into Danum Valley’s rainforest, Sabah

Want to explore and hike in primary rainforest where only a few privileged humans have stepped? Head to Danum Valley in East Sabah, located over 70 kilometres (43.5 miles) from the nearest town in the heart of the jungle. The 130-million-year-old dipterocarp forest covers a total of 438 square kilometres. Some parts remain unmapped and unexplored to this day. An on-site research facility attracts scientists from around the world to study the thousands of species of flora and fauna including wild orangutans, clouded leopards and pygmy elephants. Guides take visitors on some of the best jungle treks in Malaysia through the dense forests, along canopy walks and in search of wildlife. For the ultimate ecotourist experience in Borneo , stay for a few nights at Danum Valley’s hostel, camping site, or splurge on a private bungalow.

The untouched jungles of Danum Valley in Sabah, Borneo

Search for proboscis monkeys at Bako National Park, Sarawak

Bako National Park covers approximately 27 square kilometres of the Muara Tebas Peninsular in Sarawak. Located just 26 kilometres (16.2 miles) northeast of Kuching, this is one of the more accessible national parks in Malaysia. A total of 16 colour-coded trails ranging from 0.5 kilometres (0.31 miles) to six kilometres (3.7 miles), take hikers through the rainforest landscapes. Culture Trip recommends the Lintang Loop , which passes through all the national park’s vegetation and ecosystems and takes four hours to complete. Visitors first need to get to Bako Market and then take a speedboat (30 minutes) to Bako National Park HQ. On-site accommodation includes chalets, lodges, hostels and camping facilities.

Bako is a popular place to see the endangered proboscis monkey

Malaysian Wildlife

An ethical elephant experience in the wild

This ethical Wild Elephant Safari will bring you to the depths of the tropical rainforest to encounter the herds of wild Asian elephants that roam in the jungle. You will be in the company of an outstanding guide and conservationist. Essentially, you will stay at a remote forest ecolodge, only accessible by boat, and nestled among the high trees on the bank of a river. Forget about TV, Wifi. This is the real thing to get back in touch with nature and enjoy your wildlife safari to observe elephants, big cats, deer, wild boar.

This forest lodge also serves as a research station for Asian elephant conservation. For your elephant safari holiday, it is best observing at a distance and with an expert guide, as you can see from our safari video below.

ACTIVITIES AND ITINERARY

Day 1 : Kuala Lumpur to Penan g Penang, also known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, is the best starting point to get to Lake Muda jetty. You can easily travel there from Kuala Lumpur: by road, it’s about 5 hours and by air about an hour flying time. You will be able to sample the delights of Georgetown such as the historical sights of its UNESCO World heritage. It is also the food capital of Malaysia, because of its diverse mix of ethnic Chinese, Malay, Indian and Thai cuisine.

From Georgetown, it’s a 2 hour journey by car to the Lake Muda jetty, where your guide will meet you. We can arrange a private transfer by our regular taxi service. The cost is approx. Rm 300, but we will confirm this to avoid any dispute. Pick up points are Georgetown or Butterworth.

From the Muda Lake jetty, you will travel by a local wooden boat (sampan) into the rainforest to your accommodation. The lodge is situated at the Ulu Muda Field Research Centre which conducts field research for the protection and better management of the 160,000 hectares of the greater Ulu Muda forest reserve area.

Day 2 & 3 (optional 4 & 5 days): Experience Ulu Muda For your rainforest stay, everything is tailored to your level of interest and fitness. Elephants are likely to be found at the 15 salt licks in the area, which can be reached by jungle trekking for the more active guests, or by river cruise for those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Other possible activities include overnight camping, caving in the nearby limestone caves, swimming, rafting or just lazing by the river.

Since the lodge is off-grid, there is no mobile or internet signal, so this is your chance to reconnect with nature. You can wake up to the sounds of the rainforest such as the amazing calls of the local Lar gibbons.

Day 3 (or 4 or 5): Ulu Muda to Penang Return to Lake Muda jetty by boat for a 12 noon arrival. You can then travel onwards by road, back to Penang or Kuala Lumpur or other locations on the peninsula.

The starting point for this package is at Lake Muda jetty, in the northern state of Kedah near the border with Thailand. However, we can arrange a private taxi transfer from Penang to the jetty. We will tell you the amount you need to pay beforehand so that there’s no dispute.

SUSTAINABLE & WATER ENERGY SUPPLY

We are totally off the grid, hence our electricity is supplied via a small generator. We also have a small solar system to power our dining area and kitchen. Nevertheless, it always pays to be prepared by bringing along a torch/flashlight or two. We will provide lamps if necessary.Toilets are of the flushable sitting type and are attached to all rooms and dorms (en suite). We do not provide any toiletries like soaps and shampoos nor do we provide towels.

There is no landline, mobile signal or internet access at Earth Lodge. We like to think that this is one of the nice side benefits of being smack in the middle of the jungle!

HOME-COOKED FOOD

All meals are included in the package. The food served is halal. We can cater for special diets such as vegetarian and vegan, but please provide advance notice when you book. We do not serve any alcohol but we can obtain beers upon prior request at a reasonable charge. Again, you are welcome to bring your own.

PROJECT DETAILS AND IMPACTS

Successes to date….

Ulu Muda is one of the least known and studied areas, which is mega-rich in wildlife, including Elephants, Tapirs, Rhinoceros, Tigers, Leopards and Gaurs. Also, it is one of the few areas that contain lowland tropical forest in the Malay Peninsula – most have been cleared for agriculture and livestock grazing. Therefore, much more needs to be done to learn about the area’s biodiversity.

The team consists of passionate conservationists who aim to help raise awareness of the significance of Ulu Muda, while also striving to have low environmental footprint and practice ecotourism principles. Additionally, it is also the base for the Ulu Muda Field Research Center. Along with its conservation partner WWF Malaysia, the team has been actively engaging with the Kedah State Government and the Malaysian Federal Government to recognize and class Ulu Muda as a designated protected area under appropriate legislation. So far, the state has been positive to their approach – ongoing talks are being held between stakeholders to gazette a portion of the area as a State Park.
