Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide
Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isnât always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if youâre looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water youâve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitorâs guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.
Planning Your Trip
Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).
Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, itâs only natural that boats are the countryâs transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the MalĂ© Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.
Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so itâs important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either HulhulĂ© Island or in nearby MalĂ© city.
Things to Do
This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.
- Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
- Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
- Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
- Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.
What to Eat and Drink
Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what youâll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .
Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.
Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so donât expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.
Where to Stay
If visitors stay in the city of MalĂ©, itâs rarely for more than one night, as thereâs not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the countryâs myriad coral atolls.
Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the worldâs most expensive resorts. If youâre on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North MalĂ© Atoll or Ari Atoll.
There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .
The Maldivesâ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the worldâs first and only underwater spa.
Getting There
The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly MalĂ© International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of MalĂ©. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where youâre staying. A bridge connects the airport (on HulhulĂ© Island) to adjacent MalĂ© city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.
The Maldivesâ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in MalĂ© that are also worth exploring.
- One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
- The Maldives National Museum in MalĂ© is a compact yet illuminating repository for the countryâs prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
- Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.
Money-Saving Tips
- May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
- Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

Travelers' pro tips or experiencing maldives.
Snorkeling! Personally, I would never go to a resort without a house reef as I would be missing out on what is the best thing about the Maldives â the underwater world! The amount and variety of fish are incredible, and for first-timers being able to swim with sharks and turtles is such an amazing experience (in fact it never gets less amazing!).
darrylpaula
Our biggest priority when choosing an island is the accessibility and quality of the house reef/snorkeling. Another must-do is watching the sunrise and sunset.
Placitasgirl
The underwater world is, of course, my number one, but watching dolphins play at sunrise is probably my number two.
For us, the Maldives is all about snorkeling. Yes, it's stunningly beautiful and totally idyllic, but what makes it utterly unique is the underwater world that is SO accessible and varied.
Swimming with the fishes (sorry, couldn't resist) in the Maldives is a life-changing experience, so far removed from most people's day-to-day life that it has the power to change your whole perspective. For many of us, there is no going back â a holiday that isn't shared with a shark or ten is just not worth the bother.
Have to say it's the diving for me, amazing corals and fish, and if you time, the months you travel and location the opportunity to dive with Manta, whale sharks or 200+ sharks at the mouth of a channel is amazing. With Fuvahmulah, the addition of tiger sharks, oceanic manta, hammerheads, and threshers makes this a one-of-a-kind location for diving. Throw in the remoteness, and on a clear night, unbelievable skies, it's a paradise hard to replicate.
What is the best way to get there?
Velana International Airport (VIA) is the only international airport in the Maldives. It offers several flights to/from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. From its location on Hulhule Island near the capital island of Male, you can grab your (usually pre-arranged) speedboat, seaplane or ferry to your destination island.
For more info, visit the Male Airport Guide  or Trans Maldivian Airways .
Do I need a visa?
Though a 30-day tourist visa is given to all travelers upon arrival, there are certain entry requirements, such as a passport thatâll be valid for at least six months.
For more visa info, see here .
When is the best time to visit?
It doesnât get much more tropical than the Maldives! And the best time to visit the Maldives is January through March, though prices may be higher this time of year. Prices are typically cheaper May through November during the rainy season. The average daily temperatures most times of the year are highs of 32 C (89 F) and lows of 26 C (78 F).
These high-speed boats are a common way to get around the islands, especially to/from the hotels and airports, but they can be expensive.
These get you to the more far-flung islands in the Maldives if you want to island-hop, but these, too, can be expensive.
Public ferries run between the inhabited islands, but schedules are often unreliable and can vary depending on the time of year. Visit here for more info.

Most residents speak English, but learning a few words of the national language Dhivehi is appreciated: âAssalaamu Alaikumâ (hello); Ranâgalhu, shukuriyaa (fine, thank you); Shukuriyaa (thank you).
Additional entry requirements in the Maldives include proof of pre-paid accommodations and that you have enough funds for your stay as well as confirmed onward/return tickets home. For more info, visit here .
Environment
Coral reefs are the foundation of the Maldives, so it is very important to not disturb, touch, remove, or stand on its coral reefs when diving or snorkeling. And never leave garbage behind.
Always greet people
A courteous, formal greeting in French, âBonjour, Monsieur/Madame,â is always appreciated â this includes shop attendants, wait staff, hotel staff, drivers.
Donât talk loudly in public
It is considered rude and ugly.
Donât expect fast service
Sales assistants in shops or wait staff in restaurants wonât approach you straight away â giving people time and space is an important part of French culture. Also, donât expect wait staff to give you the bill when your meal is finished, you will have to ask for it.

11 Epic Things to Do in the Maldives
With 1,190 islands scattered across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, including close to 200 resort islands and 200 inhabited islands, there are plenty of places to explore in the Maldives. Despite the numerous options, most visitors choose to lounge at

Many vacationers head to the Maldives solely to relax on the beach â and for good reason. The sugar white sand and striking turquoise water â practically unmatched in its clarity anywhere in the Caribbean â make for the perfect beach vacation backdrop. Every resort island has at least one beach with lounge chairs or salas to relax on. Most also have a "house reef" where you can cool off and admire the marine life.
Some resorts that boast notably beautiful beaches include:
Go scuba diving and snorkeling Go scuba diving and snorkeling
With exceptionally clear visibility of up to 131 feet, an average sea temperature of 85.5 degrees Fahrenheit, bucket-list opportunities to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, and an abundance of marine life, the Maldives makes for a great environment for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Many resorts feature a house reef (a coral reef easily accessible from shore), while most also offer snorkeling excursions where a boat and tour operator transport you to even more vibrant reefs around the atoll. Most resorts and many inhabited islands have a dive center, so beginner and seasoned scuba divers alike can enjoy dive trips to the most stunning "giris" (shallow submerged reefs), drop-offs, "thilas" (pinnacles), channels, caves and shipwrecks around the area. With typically a medium to strong current, most dives in the Maldives are drift dives from boats.
Try must-do water sports Try must-do water sports
Your trip to the Maldives would be incomplete if you didn't explore the glassy waters of the Indian Ocean or stick your head beneath the surface to check out the colorful world below. After all, the official territory of the Maldives is 99% water and 1% land, so if you only explore the islands, you're barely scratching the surface.
Snorkeling and diving are the top two activities in the Maldives, with wreck dives, pinnacles, reef walls and channel dives being just some of the options on offer. Swim with dozens of nurse sharks in Fulidhoo, whale sharks at Maamigili and tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah, or check out some of the incredible shipwrecks, such as Kuda Giri. You'll never get bored if you embrace the plethora of water sports available in the Maldives.

Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay
U.S. News Insider Tip: If seeing mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay is on your bucket list, choose a resort in Baa Atoll, such as Anantara Kihavah and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. You'll avoid a lengthy journey and expensive private charter fees. â Sarah Harvey
Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was created in recognition of the incredible biodiversity of the underwater ecosystem, and Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in this atoll's crown. Hanifaru is a monitored snorkeling site that's renowned for attracting exceptionally high numbers of manta rays. During the southwestern monsoon (May to November), huge quantities of zooplankton become trapped in the horseshoe-shaped bay, creating a kind of zooplankton "soup," which in turn attracts remarkable numbers of zooplankton-loving "megafauna."Â In peak season, there could be as many as 100 mantas, plus maybe even several whale sharks feeding there. Hanifaru is one of the only places in the world where so many mantas and whale sharks aggregate in such unusually high numbers.Â
Authentic cultural experiences Authentic cultural experiences
U.S. News Insider Tip: Many souvenirs are imported from China. Look for souvenirs that are actually made in the Maldives, including thundu kunaa woven mats, striped feyli sarongs, lacquerwork from Baa Atoll and wooden miniature dhonis (boats). Or, check out Authentic Maldives . â Sarah Harvey
Influenced by sailors, traders and other explorers from India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and even further afield over a period of more than 2,500 years, the Maldives is a melting pot of cultures. Prior to the country's official conversion to Islam in A.D. 1153, the Maldives was Buddhist and Hindu. You can see evidence of the Maldives' fascinating past through a number of authentic cultural experiences.
North Malé Atoll North Malé Atoll free
This atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll, is where you'll find the international airport, the capital city, plenty of popular dive sites, several "guesthouse islands" and more than a dozen resorts. A lot of people incorrectly refer to Velana International Airport as "Male airport" (and confusingly, it even has the airport code "MLE"), but it's actually located on an island called Hulhule, which is adjacent to Malé. Most visitors don't ever set foot in Malé, and are instead whisked from Hulhule straight to their resort or guesthouse. However, while most visitors aren't sad to skip Malé, the atoll named after the country's capital city is an extremely popular spot to visit.
Visitors who don't want to hop on another plane after a long journey to the Maldives often pick resorts or guesthouses in North Malé Atoll because they know it's a quick speedboat ride to their accommodation. The closest resorts to the airport, such as Kurumba and Bandos, are only 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. However, the furthest away islands, which could take from 45 minutes to an hour to reach by speedboat, do have the benefit of not being under flight paths and not having the capital city and other urban developments on the horizon, which guests sometimes complain about. What's more, speedboat transfers are also cheaper than seaplane transfers.
Banana Reef Banana Reef
This vibrant site in North Malé Atoll is popular with divers and snorkelers alike. Its name comes from the curved shape of the reef when seen from above. You can admire a wide variety of marine life, including schools of jacks as well as Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracudas, snapper, groupers, reef sharks and, if you're lucky and it's the right season, maybe even mantas too.
Divers who visited the site recently raved about the excellent visibility and abundance of aquatic life, while snorkelers liked how easy it was to see the reef, as the shallowest parts are at only about 4 feet.
Maafushi Maafushi free
U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for an island where you can hang out with other travelers, this one is a great option, although those wanting a more idyllic escape might prefer a less built-up island, such as Fulidhoo or Dhigurah. â Sarah Harvey
Maafushi is the most developed inhabited island in the Maldives when it comes to guesthouse tourism. When guesthouses were first legalized, it was on Maafushi that the first one opened in 2010. Prior to that, it was difficult for visitors to mingle with the average Maldivian and get a sense of what island life was like in the "real" Maldives. Today, Maafushi is home to dozens of guesthouses ranging in size and budget, from simple lodgings to stylish hotels. There are also plenty of cafes, watersports centers and dive centers to keep you entertained.

Hulhumalé Hulhumalé free
Hulhumalé is an entirely artificial island built over a shallow lagoon adjacent to Malé. Construction began in 1997, and the rapidly expanding island is currently well on its way to doubling in size from the original 1.5-square-mile plot. The main purpose of creating Hulhumalé was to provide more housing for the overflowing capital city, and it remains a largely residential island. However, Hulhumalé also attracts travelers thanks to its dozens of guesthouses (which mostly line the long sandy beach), as well as several watersports centers and dive centers, a skate park and its very own Central Park. You will also find a variety of cafes and restaurants, ranging from Maldivian cuisine at The Maldive Kitchen to international options like Korean Food Zone.
The main reason visitors choose to stay in HulhumalĂ© is because it's close to the airport. If they arrive to the Maldives at night, it means they can't hop on a seaplane (which only operate during day), so HulhumalĂ© is a handy pit stop for many. While it's quieter and greener than MalĂ©, it is becoming busier every year, and some parts of it are beginning to look in need of repair. However, the beach strip, which most tourists stick to, is fairly well looked after. The second phase of this land reclamation project is newer, and the buildings and streets are in better condition there. It is separated from the rest of the island by a series of bridges over a small channel of water.Â
Huraa Island Huraa Island free
Huraa is a relaxing, friendly and uncrowded island village best known to tourists for guesthouses, snorkeling and surfing opportunities. There are several surf points in the vicinity, but surfing in the Maldives is best suited to intermediate to advanced-level surfers because all of the breaks are coral breaks. There are souvenir shops, cafes, small grocery shops, two dive centers and a football field, but the white sand beaches fringing the island are probably the biggest draw, along with the unique insights you'll get into how Maldivians really live. Guesthouses on the island can also organize day trips and activities, such as sandbank trips and fishing excursions.
Past travelers love the fact that there are only electric vehicles on the island, but say it's still being developed for tourism. Some were disappointed to find that there is no "bikini beach" anymore (a tourist beach where you can wear a bikini, as it's illegal to wear skimpy swimwear on any island that isn't a resort island). However, many said the island was beautiful and they enjoyed exploring the mangrove area too.
Maldives Victory Maldives Victory
The Maldives Victory, a 262-foot-long cargo ship, sunk in 1981 after hitting a reef in North Malé Atoll . Now, the dive site attracts scuba aficionados thanks to the beautiful corals that have covered it, as well as the rich sea life that has made the wreck a sight to behold, including turtles, trevallies, grouper, batfish, pufferfish and lionfish. For macrolife-lovers, there are also nudibranchs on the stern.
The Maldives Victory rests upright off the coast of Hulhule Island, not too far from the southern end of the Velana International Airport runway. Experts say this site is best seen between late May and July. Recent reviewers recommended a penetration dive so you don't miss the marine life inside the wreck and touted it as one of the most thrilling dive sites in the country.

7 of the best places to visit in the Maldives

The fabulous diversity of the Maldives means thereâs an island for every type of tourist, from budget travelers to adrenaline junkies who dream of exploring beneath the waves.
So whether youâre a first-time visitor  on honeymoon or coming back again to gain a deeper insight into the region, here are our picks of the must-visit destinations in the Maldives.
1. Raa Atoll
Best for the diverse marine lifeÂ
The Raa Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane journey from Male âs Velana International Airport, comprises 88 islands. Its diverse marine life, combined with its proximity to the UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve , makes it a great destination for divers, many of whom come to see the manta rays that head to this part of the Indian Ocean to raise their young.
Raa Atoll resorts worthy of a spot on your bucket list include Heritance Aarah , which has fantastic sustainability credentials as the Maldivesâ first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold resort. Itâs also got a brilliant on-site museum, where various artifacts and a replica of a traditional Maldivian village provide a wonderful insight into the regionâs history.
Additionally, the Cora Cora Maldives resort has a dive school that offers a huge range of qualifications, including Bubblemaker courses for children who fancy heading beneath the waves for the first time.
2. The Fari Islands
Best for luxury
A new concept for the Maldives, the North Male Atollâs Fari Islands development currently comprises two resorts. The Patina Maldives  attracts a young stylish crowd with its minimalist over-water villas designed by Studio MK27 and a boutique filled with clothing curated by fashion magazine The Rake . There's also a huge focus on art, the highlight of which is American artist James Turrellâs Skyspace , a hollow wooden structure that affords unique views of starry night skies.
At the Ritz-Carlton Maldives , butler service comes as standard, and youngsters are kept occupied by the enormous video console-filled kids club. In 2025, a third resort, the Capella Maldives , will be added.
3. Crossroads
Best for the range of accommodationÂ
Crossroads is another multi-resort complex, and it was one of the first in the Maldives. Itâs also a destination in its own right â in addition to the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives , Saii Lagoon Maldives and SO/ Hotel Maldives , thereâs a beach club and marina. Its proximity to Maleâs Velana International Airport â itâs just a 15-minute speedboat ride away â means visitors whose seaplane flights are delayed (a regular occurance, given seaplanes are unable to fly at night) no longer have to stay in the notoriously basic hotels in the center of Male, but can head to one of Crossroadsâ three resorts, instead.
Planning tip: Â Got a painfully early flight home after your holiday? Rather than spending your final night in Male, where there are limited hotels, book a night at one of Crossroadsâ hotels instead.
4. Baa Atoll
Best for wildlife-spotting excursionsÂ
Baa Atoll is another popular destination for divers, snorkelers and anyone keen to check out the regionâs marine life. This is where youâll find the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, home to one of the Maldivesâ largest coral reefs and a magnet for a wide range of species. Many visitors come to this atoll to spot manta rays â itâs home to Hanifaru Bay, where thousands of the creatures regularly gather to feast on plankton carried here by the Indian Oceanâs currents. We recommend booking a stay at Vakkaru Maldives , which offers big five diving safaris designed for guests hoping to see manta rays, whale sharks, turtles, dolphins and blacktip sharks, all of which thrive here.Â
Planning tip: If spotting mantas is a priority, aim to visit the Baa Atoll between June and November .
5. Laamu Atoll
Best for remoteness
One of the least developed atolls, Laamu in the southern Maldives is known for its lush vegetation, palm-fringed beaches and fabulously clear night skies (several resorts here have in-house astronomers). Thereâs just one resort on this atoll â the Six Senses Laamu , which is one of the best Maldives resorts for marine life due to its collaborations with the Manta Trust , Blue Marine Foundation and Olive Ridley Project , founded to protect endangered turtle species. A large number of liveaboards (boats with onboard accommodation for divers keen to visit multiple atolls) operate here.
6. Local islandsÂ
Best for culture vulturesÂ
There are hundreds of so-called "local islands" in the Maldives â islands which arenât home to resorts, but local communities of Maldivians, many of whom work as fishers. While certain resorts offer day trips to local islands, itâs also possible to stay on one, in homestay-style accommodation owned by locals. These include Maafushi , which is connected to Male via a regular ferry service; Fulhadhoo, which is a two-hour speedboat ride from Male and located on the wildlife-rich Baa Atoll; and the Ari Atollâs Hangnaameedhoo, surrounded by a beautiful coral reef.
A stay on one of these islands doesnât just offer brilliant value for money (expect to pay between US$30 and US$60 for a night in a guesthouse) but a fantastic insight into the Maldivian way of life, and many guesthouse owners will happily arrange visits to island schools or excursions with local fishers.
7. Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi
Best for sustainabilityÂ
The Green Globe-certified Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fush i is one of numerous Maldives resorts going all out when it comes to sustainability, but weâre flagging this particular property because itâs the one many resorts look to as inspiration. In the on-site sustainability lab, various pieces of hi-tech kit â including an extruder, which turns pellets made from marine waste into a range of products including furniture â allow staff to recycle more plastic than any other resort. Itâs not just employees turning trash into treasure, either â during regular workshops, guests can make items such as earrings and toys from waste plastic. The resort also has a turtle ranger project, the Coralarium, which acts as an artificial coral reef, and an osmosis facility that allows the resort to generate its own water supply, eliminating the need for plastic bottles.Â

Maldives Minister Urges Indians to Visit As India Moves from Top Source Market to 6th

May 7th, 2024 at 9:45 AM EDT
The Maldivian tourism minister's plea to Indian visitors highlights the critical role tourism plays in the country's economic framework. It also speaks volumes about India's outbound tourism potential.
Peden Doma Bhutia
It’s been four months since the #BoycottMaldives trend started in India, and Maldives wants those tourists back.
âAs the tourism minister, I want to ask Indians to please be a part of Maldivesâ tourism,” said Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal to PTI Videos. “Our economy depends on tourism. Our people and the government will extend a warm welcome to Indian travelers.â
The tensions began when three Maldivian politicians made disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian arrivals have plummeted more than 40% since then â to roughly 44,000 so far this year.
VIDEO | Hereâs what Tourism Minister of Maldives Ibrahim Faisal said on India-Maldives relations. âWe have a history. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India). We always promote peace and a friendly environment. Our people and the government will⊠pic.twitter.com/xFgEkgEunv — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) May 6, 2024
India’s ranking from the second-largest tourism source market during this period last year to the sixth shows the impact of the diplomatic tensions.
Maldives wants to mend the relationship. âWe have a history. The Indian government has been very helpful during our time of need. We welcome Indian arrivals thatâs a clear message from us. Our newly elected government also wants to work together (with India) and promote peace and a friendly environment,â the Maldives tourism minister said.
Faisal also talked about how Indiaâs large population presents a huge tourism market for Maldives.
What Started It All
The controversy arose after Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep islands, with social media users suggesting that the visit was a push for Indian tourists to visit domestic destinations rather than international ones like Maldives.
The three Maldivian deputy ministers used words such as âclownâ to refer to Modi, leading to the boycott.
Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip announced that it would suspend all flight bookings to Maldives. Skift tried searching for flights on the EaseMyTrip platform on Wednesday and found none.
“Since mid-January, we’ve upheld our decision of suspending flights to the Maldives,” Nishant Pitti, CEO and co-founder, of EaseMyTrip, told Skift. “As a leading Indian online travel agency (OTA) and out of a sense of responsibility, we prioritized our commitment over the business opportunities and continue to stand by it.”
Maldives Wants Indian Tourists
India was the biggest source market for tourism into the Maldives in 2023, with over 11% share in its 1.8 million tourism arrivals, according to the tourism ministry.
Last year, Maldives brought in 209,198 Indian tourists.
The usually-reticent CEO of resort chain Soneva, Sonu Shivdasani, also wrote about the potential impact of the diplomatic stand off on the tourism industry , and hoped for a reconciliation.
Determined to increase Indian arrivals to the island destination, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, had shared with Skift its plans to host roadshows in 3 Indian cities in July.
âProperties and resorts that rely heavily on the Indian market have been severely affected. This will hurt us in the long term and that is why we have decided to engage with the India market,â Abdulla Ghiyas, president of the association told Skift.

Maldives urges Indians to 'be a part' of its tourism, says country's economy 'depends' on it
Tourism Minister Faisal urges Indian support amid declining tourist numbers in Maldives. Backlash over derogatory remarks on social media led to a 42% decline in Indian tourists. President Muizzu's pro-China stance strained relations with India.
Maldives votes in the shadow of India-China rivalry
Primarily known as one of the most expensive holiday destinations in South Asia, with pristine white beaches and secluded resorts, the strategic Indian Ocean island nation has also become a geopolitical hotspot. Global east-west shipping lanes pass the nation's chain of 1,192 tiny coral islands, stretching around 800 kilometres (500 miles) across the equator. President Mohamed Muizzu, 45, won last September's presidential poll as a proxy for pro-China ex-president Abdulla Yameen, this week freed after a court set aside his 11-year jail term for corruption.
Maldives signs deal with China for redeveloping airport
The redevelopment of Kadhdhoo domestic airport into an international airport entails a 2.45-km runway with a terminal capable of handling 300 passengers during peak hours, according to a press release by the Maldives President's Office.
Why time is running out across the Maldives' lovely little islands
In the Maldives, a nation of contrasts emerges between the bustling capital of Malé and the quiet, depopulating outer islands. As residents migrate to urban centers for better opportunities, the government faces challenges of urban development and environmental impact. Amidst this evolution, individuals navigate personal journeys and sacrifices for a brighter future.
Indian tourists shun the Maldives; industry feels the pinch: Reports
Indian tourists are avoiding the Maldives following social media controversies, causing a significant drop in tourist arrivals from India and impacting the island nation's tourism-dependent economy. Previously the top source of visitors, India fell to sixth place in 2024. Industry experts warn of substantial revenue losses and emphasize the importance of repairing relations with India.
Amidst diplomatic row, China displaces India as largest tourism market for Maldives
China has overtaken Indian tourists visiting the Maldives, according to official figures from the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism. As of February 4, China occupied the number one slot (11.2%) market share in 2024, while India slipped down to 5th position with 16,536 tourists (7.7% market share in 2024). This could be a result of a backlash against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media after Modi posted photos and video of his visit to the pristine Lakshadweep Islands.
Budget 2024: Sitharaman's push towards making India a tourism hub; gives special mention to Lakshadweep
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to make India a global tourism hub, focusing on developing iconic tourist centers and spiritual tourist spots. Emphasis will be placed on port connectivity, tourism infrastructure, and amenities, particularly in Lakshadweep. The government will provide interest-free loans to states for development. The travel and tourism sector contributed 15.7 lakh crore to India's economy in 2022 and is expected to create jobs for 137 million people and add $250 billion to the GDP by 2030.

Indians ditch Maldives as their favourite island getaway
India's position as the top contributor to tourist numbers in the Maldives has slipped, with Russia now taking the lead. The decline in Indian tourists is attributed to growing tensions between the two countries. This shift highlights the complexities of regional geopolitics in the Indian Ocean.
Maldivian President Muizzu is choosing China over India: What is at play?
Many believe that the controversy was triggered by PM Modi's bid to promote Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives. However, India-Maldives ties were expected to be tense after the election of pro-China Muizzu to the top post in the Maldives last year, after the rule of incumbent pro-India president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Lakshadweep: Can it beat Maldives in the battle of tropical paradises?
Lakshadweep, a tropical archipelago located west of Kochi, has gained attention with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit and a viral snorkelling picture. With 36 islands, 10 open for tourism, Lakshadweep offers diverse beauty and activities. It distinguishes itself from the Maldives with larger islands, varying lagoon depths, and a low-key tourism policy. The upcoming Taj resorts in Suheli and Kadmat will further boost tourism.

"Our Government must make stronger statement to repair relation with India" says Maldives opposition leader amid diplomatic row
Amid the ongoing row between India and the Maldives, the Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Fayyaz Ismail has called for a "tougher stand" by the government, saying that the racist comments against India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were just isolated individual opinions of these people who were unfortunately given positions in the government.

Seeking rapprochement of relations with India to avert a "potential adverse impact" on tourism that is the lifeblood of the archipelago, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) appealed to the CEO of an online travel platform in India after it announced the suspension of all flight bookings to the island nation on its website in solidarity with India.
Send more tourists, Maldives appeals to China after major backlash from Indians
This comes amid a significant number of cancellation of reservations by Indian tourists in the wake of the ongoing diplomatic tiff. It may be mentioned here that some of Maldives' ministers made some shockingly irresponsible observations against Narendra Modi. These comments were in response to Modi's video of his Lakshadweep trip.

The number was more than 2.4 lakh in 2022 while over 2.11 lakh Indians flew to the Maldives in 2021. The Maldives was also one of the few countries open for international tourists during the pandemic and nearly 63,000 Indians visited the country in that period.

The Maldives experienced a significant decline in tourist arrivals from India over the past three weeks, amid the ongoing diplomatic dispute between the two nations, as per official statistics. According to data released by the ministry of tourism in the Maldives, India has dropped from the third to the fifth spot among the top 10 tourism markets within the last three weeks. As of January 28, India's market share stands at 8%, with China and the UK surpassing the country, securing the third and fourth positions, respectively.
The Maldives will maintain Indian aviation assets, including two naval helicopters and a Dornier aircraft, but India will replace military personnel handling operation and maintenance tasks by May 10. The decision was reached during the second India-Maldives high-level core group meeting, with India confirming mutually agreeable solutions for the continued operation of its aviation platforms. Male specified that the replacement of Indian military personnel for one platform would occur by March 10, followed by the other by May 10.
IMF warns Maldives of debt distress from Chinese loans. Urges revenue increase, and spending cuts to avert crisis. President Muizzu shifts focus to Beijing, winning elections with promises of urban development. "Uncertainty surrounding the outlook is high and risks are tilted to the downside, including from delayed fiscal consolidation and weaker growth in key sources markets for tourism," the IMF said in a statement.
India has announced a Rs 3,600-crore infrastructure upgrade for the Lakshadweep islands to boost tourism and generate employment. The plan includes port facilities at Androth, Kalpeni, and Kadamat islands, as well as the construction of roads on Kadamat Island, Agatti Island, and Kavaratti Island.
The anger over derogatory remarks made by Maldives politicians against PM Modi is leading to travel companies and industry chambers boycotting the archipelago. Travel portals are seeing a surge in searches for desi destinations like Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar. EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings, while MakeMyTrip has observed a 3,400% increase in searches for Lakshadweep. The Indian Chamber of Commerce has appealed to boycott Maldives, and Subhash Goyal has called for promoting Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar instead.
PM Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep islands sparked controversy on social media. Maldivian politicians made racist remarks against India, prompting condemnation from Indian celebrities. The Malaysian government distanced itself from the comments. Kangana Ranaut expressed support for PM Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep and domestic tourism. She criticized the derogatory remarks from Maldivian officials and highlighted the importance of supporting the Indian economy. In response to the backlash, the Maldives government suspended three ministers. Kangana welcomed the action against racism.
Among those entering the Lakshadweep versus Maldives debate is Pankaj Tripathi. When he was asked about visiting Maldives, Pankaj told News18 that people often choose the Maldives just to show off on social media.
Abdulla Mausoom, former tourism minister of Maldives, criticizes the 'unnecessary' social media posts by ministers of the new government that caused outrage and #boycottmaldives to trend. He emphasizes that these posts are no longer personal as they represent the government and country. Mausoom highlights the strong bond between India and Maldives under former President Solih's government, including the travel bubble arrangement that made India the top source market. He stresses the importance of safeguarding the import-dependent and tourism-reliant industries and expresses hope for the return of Indian tourists in larger numbers.

News & features, winter center, news / recreation, island time: why some resorts in the maldives move their clocks ahead an hour.

(CNN) â It may be true that Maldivesâ luxury resorts really do have it all â the turquoise water, the rich marine life, and, in some cases, their own time system.
Referred to as âisland time,â it isnât a figurative saying that invites guests to relax and forget about the passing minutes.
Many resorts move their clocks at least one hour ahead of the countryâs official time zone â which is five hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+5).
âThis deliberate time adjustment is more than a mere quirk of travel; it is a thoughtful enhancement to the guest experience, catering to the diverse needs of our international visitors,â Mohit Dembla, general manager  of the JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa tells CNN Travel.
The JW Marriott is one of four Maldives properties under the Marriott Group umbrella, alongside the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, the Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort and the Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands.
All four resorts observe Island Time.
More daylight activities and sunset dinners
While this single-hour shift might not seem like a big deal to those who live in places where the days are long, it makes a big difference when youâre on holiday and there are only so many hours of daylight to squeeze things into.
â Since most resorts in the Maldives are located on their own private islands, and often miles away from mainland MalĂ©, they frequently operate according to their own rules, namely the âisland timeâ so travelers may take advantage of an extra hour of daylight each day to fully indulge at the resort,â explains Zhilah Vego, director of sales and marketing  at the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort .
The time adjustment means the sun rises at 7 a.m. at the resorts instead of 6 a.m. â the official Maldives time.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is seen here on the Fari Islands. Many resorts move their clocks at least one hour ahead of the country’s official time zone – which is five hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+5). (Photo credit: Marriott International via CNN Newsource)
Soneva, another luxury resort group with multiple properties around the Maldives, also sets the clocks at its resorts an hour ahead of Male Time. Instead of the word âisland,â they name the clock shift after each of its properties. (Soneva Jani calls it âSoneva Jani Time,â  for example.)
âWith the sun rising at 7 a.m. and setting at 7:15 p.m., our guests enjoy perfectly timed daylight for early morning jogs or cool evening sports, escaping the peak heat of the day,â says Charles Morris, GM of Soneva Jani.
âThis also gifts them the serene beauty of dusk till 7:45 p.m., perfect for witnessing spectacular sunsets on South Beach.â
Staff at other resorts have similar explanations, telling CNN the unofficial time zone helps their guests enjoy more outdoor activities before sundown and bask in the sunset at dinner. Special activities are often planned for those golden hours.
The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, for instance, hosts sunrise yoga and run sessions â dubbed WestinRun.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands serves dinner at its poolside bar with a sunset Maldivian boduberu drum performance, whereas the St. Regis sabers a bottle of Champagne at 6:45 p.m. for their guests.
Widespread as it is, island time may still come as a shock for Maldivesâ first-time visitors, particularly as they try to balance relaxation with reality and worry about transfers back to the airport to catch their flight home.
St. Regis staff tell CNN they understand guests might be confused by the conversion. To remedy this, dedicated butlers inform the guests of island time ahead of their stays and help coordinate the time conversations and transfers, especially from the airport to the resort.
Not every island resort follows island time
Not every resort in the Maldives follows island time. That includes Kurumba, which holds the honor of being the countryâs very first resort.
âHere at Kurumba Maldives  we donât use island time and never have, simply because as the first resort in the Maldives the concept of island time didnât exist,â says Ali Farooq, resort manager at Kurumba, which opened in 1972.
âLots of our team members commute from MalĂ© so we also like to respect their work-life balance, and our experience is that guests find it more convenient and less confusing to be on one time zone. Kurumba is only a short speedboat ride from the airport so they donât lose any time when staying here.â
An archipelago made up of 1,190 low-lying islands, the Maldives stretches out over 90,000 square kilometers.
The majority of the nationâs 160-plus resorts sit on individual islands, many of which are accessed by float plane  from Velana International Airport in the capital, Male. These planes canât fly after dark, so daylight hours are precious.
Over the years, resorts in other countries have created their own time zones for various reasons, but the Maldives certainly has the most of them. For JW Marriottâs Dembla, it all comes down to the travelerâs experience.
â(The resort) is not just about providing luxury accommodations and services; Itâs about curating an environment where time itself is attuned to the comfort and preferences of our esteemed visitors,â he says.
âIt reflects the unhurried pace and relaxed attitude characteristic of island communities, enriching the overall travel experience.â

'Maldives issue with India helping us': Sri Lanka tourism minister on boost in Indian travellers amidst Maldives boycott calls
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Tourism highlighted that shift in travel patterns is evident, with India, once the largest source market for the Maldives in 2023, now ranking sixth behind countries such as China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.
- Updated May 16, 2024, 2:42 PM IST
Sri Lanka's Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, has pointed out the positive impact of calls for Indian travellers to boycott the Maldives on Sri Lanka's travel industry. Fernando expressed that the ongoing situation in the Maldives has inadvertently benefited Sri Lanka's tourism sector, speaking to CNBC on Thursday.
Referencing a social media dispute in January that led to a significant decline in Indian visitors to the Maldives this year, Fernando stated, "The Maldives issue is... helping us."Â
Highlighting the strong ties between Sri Lanka and India, both in business and tourism, Fernando emphasised the value proposition Sri Lanka offers Indian travellers. He pointed out the diverse attractions in Sri Lanka, including its beaches, casinos, shopping opportunities, and the Ramayana Trail, a series of sites linked to the ancient Hindu epic, Ramayana.
Fernando also acknowledged India's growing influence in Sri Lankan travel sector, predicting that Indian travellers are poised to become the world's fourth-largest spenders by 2030. This trend is seen as a significant boost for Sri Lanka's tourism industry, with Fernando noting the positive impact of India's economic growth on the island nation.
Looking ahead, Fernando expressed optimism about attracting more global investments to Sri Lanka, drawing parallels to the Maldives' renowned water bungalow concept. Plans are underway to introduce adventure activities to cater to younger travellers and initiatives to position Sri Lanka as an entertainment hub by hosting musical events to attract tourists.Â

Maldives minister admits their pilots unable to fly aircraft given by india.
14 May 2024 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}
"There aren't any people licenced to fly the aircraft," said Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon at a media briefing in Male on Sunday.
Maumoon explained that Maldivian soldiers who began training to fly the aircraft under previous administrations were unable to complete the program due to unspecified reasons.
The Indian personnel left the Maldives on Friday, adhering to a deadline set in February as part of an agreement between the two nations. This agreement followed a demand made by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, shortly after taking office in November 2023.
The Indian military personnel, stationed in the Maldives to operate two platforms for helicopters and a Dornier aircraft, had left Male and returned to India by Friday, as per the May 10 deadline set following an agreement between the two countries in February in New Delhi.
The move to replace Indian military personnel with civilians is seen as a setback to India's efforts to counter China's influence in the small, strategically located country to its south.
Since coming into power, Muizzu's government has entered several agreements with China to boost economic ties and has sidelined India in several projects.
The Maldives signed a military assistance pact with China in March. It has also allowed a Chinese research vessel to dock at its port, in India's backyard.
While New Delhi’s ties with Male, the capital of the Maldives, grew significantly during the previous administration, pro-China Muizzu campaigned on an "India Out" platform, saying that the Indian military presence in the country compromised Maldivian sovereignty.
The 77 military personnel whom Muizzu wanted India to take back are mainly pilots, crew and technicians who operate two helicopters and an aircraft used to assist the island nation in maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations and medical evacuations. But in the Maldives, the presence of the men was perceived as "boots on the ground."
