Out of Africa Movie Locations in Kenya

The Wildebeest migration is a stunning display that author Karen Blixen also saw when she lived in Kenya.

Movie locations guide to Out of Africa: Karen Blixen’s Kenya

When Karen Blixen published her autobiographical novel Out of Africa in 1937, under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, it was an idealized picture of her time in Africa and a declaration of love to what is now Kenya. Follow in the footsteps of the author and visit locations from the award-winning movie, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. By Connie Maria Westergaard

“If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, of the plows in the fields and the sweaty faces of the coffee pickers, does Africa know a song of me?” – Karen Blixen

Karen Blixen on safari in Kenya in the 1930s.

wonders in Out of Africa.

Had she lived today, I am sure she would have been pleased, because Africa knows many songs of Karen Blixen. Songs of her farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills, her love and hardship, her stories, her safari trips with Denys Finch Hatton and not least her pioneering spirit that was unusual and unwelcome for a woman in British East Africa in the 1920’s. But I have gone ahead of my story.

Karen Dinesen arrived in Mombasa, in what is now Kenya, 13 January 1914. The next day she married her Swedish friend and second cousin Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke and became Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. They bought a farm outside Nairobi and tried to grow coffee, but without much luck. The marriage was never one of love and happiness, and when it failed, she cast her love on the British big-game hunter Denys Finch Hatton.

Out of Africa Together they went on safaris. He would take her flying and play her Mozart, and in return she would tell him stories. When her coffee company went bankrupt in 1931, and Denys was killed in a plane crash, she sold her farm and left Kenya forever.

After her return to her native Denmark, she wrote her most famous book Out of Africa . It was later adapted for the big screen, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Recently I had the opportunity to travel in the footsteps of Karen Blixen from Denmark to Kenya, visiting places where she went, places inspired by her and locations used in the Out of Africa movie.

Muthaiga Country Club

Karen married Bror in the Muthaiga Country Club in Nairobi the day after she arrived in Africa. The club was a popular meeting place for the foreign elite in Nairobi. Many scenes from the movie are played out here, but were filmed in a different building than the original one.

The club still exists in the wealthy residential suburb of Muthaiga, but is for members only. The club is also where Karen met her lover Denys Finch Hatton in 1918. www.mcc.co.ke

Karen Blixen Museum

Luxe tents at the Karen Blixen Camp in Kenya.

Bror and Karen Blixen lived on a farm called Mbagathi on the outskirts of Nairobi for the first three years of their time in Kenya. Later they moved to the nearby Mbogani house and farm, which is now the Karen Blixen Museum.

It is located in the Nairobi suburb Karen, named after the Danish author, and opened in 1985, when the movie premiered.

When Karen left Kenya, she sold most of her belongings. However, the museum has succeeded in acquiring some of the original furniture, such as a mahogany bookcase and the white dressing table in her bedroom.

The movie production company also donated some of the props from the movie, such as safari outfits worn by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Her bed and the dining table are also from the movie. The house in the movie is a different house though in the same area that used to belong to Ngina Kenyatta, the wife of Kenya’s first president. www.museums.or.ke

Ngong Hills

Karen Blixen Museum1

Outside the Karen Blixen Museum, in the back, you will find two millstone tables, where Karen would sit morning and evening drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes while looking towards the Ngong Hills.

Ngong is a Masai word meaning knuckles, because the hills look like such. Ngong Hills is the final resting place for Denys Finch Hatton.

The grave is hard to find, but there is an obelisk and plaque there with his name on it.

Half a mile down the road from Karen Blixen Museum is Swedo House, which is the original farmhouse of the Blixen property. Bror and Karen lived in the newer farmhouse, so this one served as the farm manager’s house, and Karen’s brother, Thomas Dinesen, resided in the house for years.

Next door is Karen Blixen Coffee Garden , which is a café and restaurant.

Karen Blixen Camp

Karen Blixen liked to change things for what she believed was the better. She rarely took no for an answer and defied the social etiquette of her time. During World War I she made trips to the front with supplies for Bror, and when times got hard she worked the coffee fields alongside her Kikuyu workers. She also built a school for the children of her Kikuyu workers because she believed that they had the right to an education. Meantime the Kikuyu elders and the expat community were shaking their heads in disapproval.

Safari action at the Masai Mara.

Karen Blixen has never set foot in Karen Blixen Camp in the Mara North Conservatory of the Masai Mara. But she went on safaris with Denys Finch Hatton in the area, and many scenes from Out of Africa were filmed there. Her pioneering spirit is very much alive in the camp and has inspired the owners to run a leading eco-friendly camp that benefits the local community.

A male lion in Masai Mara.

Electricity there comes from solar panels, trash is recycled when possible, 85% of the staff is local, and the camp runs a bead project and a hospitality school for the local Masai tribe.

Upon request and sometimes as a surprise for guests, Karen Blixen Camp organizes movie screenings of Out of Africa by the Mara River – where Denys Finch Hatton washed Karen Blixen’s hair.

It is truly remarkable to sit under a sky full of stars by the very same river, watching that movie while being served a three-course meal.

Even the dinner setting will remind you of the scene in the movie, where Denys and Karen dine in the wild, and Denys’ gramophone plays Mozart. A bonfire and torches burn in the background, and one can hear cicadas in the trees and hippos in the river. It is a must for any fan of the movie.

The camp offers accommodation in large luxury tents built on wooden platforms along the Mara River. You will sleep in real beds and have all the modern amenities of a hotel. Only difference is the sound of the African wildlife active at night and the outdoor showers.

The dining room at the Karen Blixen museum.

The tents are furnished in 1920’s safari-chic style, which will take you back to the time of Karen Blixen. And if the “free African massage” – as the Kenyans call the bumpy game drives – is not enough, you can treat yourself to The Baroness Massage in the camp spa.

Karen Blixen Camp is all-inclusive. A stay includes all food and drinks as well as two daily game drives with a driver guide. www.karenblixencamp.com

Safaris in Masai Mara

“You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.” One of Karen Blixen’s famous quotes tells us how much she loved going on safari. Denys was originally a big-game hunter, but as hunting became more and more criticized, the safari industry blossomed. Denys would take wealthy Europeans on safaris and also invited Karen to join him on some of his private trips.

In Masai Mara you will find many recognizable locations from the movie. One is the characteristic drop of the Oloololo Escarpment, on the edge of the Great Rift Valley.

It is seen in the background in several safari scenes. And then there is the wildlife. Lions, wildebeests, baboons and buffaloes all had roles in the movie, and their descendants are still roaming the savanna. Nowadays, people shoot them with cameras though.

A key location in the movie, which is also pictured on the original movie poster, is the highlands on the Oloololo Escarpment. It is where Denys and Karen have their picnic, and even though the real Denys Finch Hatton is buried in the Ngong Hills, the production company chose this site for the burial scene. The exact location is close to the site of the Angama Camp. www.angama.com

A Champagne breakfast in the African plains.

A glimpse of the world

Karen Blixen loved to fly. Denys bought a Havilland Gypsy Moth biplane that he learned to fly, and he would take her flying. She got to see Africa from the air, which was something she never forgot. She described it as “a glimpse of the world through God’s eye”.

In the movie Denys’ plane lands at Olkurruk Mara airstrip, and you will see them flying over fleeing wildebeests in Masai Mara and the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

If you fly to or from Masai Mara, it will give you an idea of what Denys and Karen saw from the air, but the best experience comes from a hot air balloon safari. As the sun rises, it paints the savanna warm orange, while you fly soundlessly over the plains in the Mara Triangle. If Denys and Karen were still picnicking on the escarpment, they would see the hot air balloons fly by every morning.

The air safari lasts for an hour, and the balloon lands not far from the movie location, where Denys’ car breaks down next to a herd of buffalos. Back on the ground, the hot air balloon company will take you to a quiet spot under an acacia tree, where the tables are set with white tablecloth, and serve you a champagne breakfast. There is nothing like it. www.skyshipcompany.com

A lazy beach in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Tsavo National Park

Denys Finch Hatton was allegedly not a very good pilot, and he was killed 14 May 1931, when his plane crashed near Voi in Tsavo National Park in the southern part of Kenya. Denys and Karen’s relationship were over by then, but it still broke her heart and marked the end of her bittersweet love affair with Africa. She returned to Denmark not long after.

The beaches of Mombasa

Actually Karen Blixen’s first touch point in Africa was Mombasa on the coast. She arrived 13 January 1914 and continued immediately by train to Nairobi. The beach scenes in the movie were filmed in Mombasa, which is a good spot for a beach vacation after being on safari. So is the exotic Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, just off the coast.

The Historic Swedo House at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages, Ltd. was the original hunting lodge/farm house which was built around 1906 to 1908. It is located approx a half mile from the Karen Blixen museum. The historic Grogan/MacMillan Manor House was moved brick by brick from downtown Nairobi to the Coffee Garden in 2008 to save it from destruction. It is the site of the original farmhouse of the property, which now is near the Karen Blixen Museum (of “Out of Africa”). The Coffee Garden sits on 5 ½ acres of land with large hundred year old trees and a beautiful garden with hundreds of different varieties of blooming flowers, and a large population of birds. Following lunch, head to the nearby Karen Blixen Museum. Once owned by Danish Author Karen and her Swedish Husband, Baron Bror, and based at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the farm house gained international fame with the release of the movie ‘Out of Africa’ an Oscar winning film based on Karen’s an autobiography by the same title. Your final stop will be at the Giraffe Centre, where the endangered Rothschild giraffe lives in peace. With an elevated viewing/feeding platform, you can get up close and personal with these gentle giants. Arrive back at your hotel in the late afternoon.

Dry, rugged and stunning, Samburu’s landscape is at once stark and sensual, with its iconic loaf shaped Lolokowe Mountain and hills spreading in every horizon. Its life lung is the Usao Nyiro River coursing through its craggy terrain full of stone, thorn bush and the forked doum palms. In this arid zone where water is scarce and the land baked by the eternal sun, herds of elephants and the big cats roam the plains along with the special "Samburu Five" - the Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and a long necked antelope called the Gerenuk. On our Kenya tour, you'll discover a land of glacier-coated mountains, arid plains and thick rainforest. Kenya lays claim to a spectrum of diversity that few countries can rival.

Indeed, Kenya's natural environment earns worldwide acclaim both for its exceptional beauty and its profusion of exotic wildlife and our nine-day adventure through this remarkable East African country showcases the reasons why.

Via the 'White Highlands' - so named due to the large numbers of Europeans who settled there - we travel past the slopes of the continent's highest mountain (Mount Kenya) and on to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where we have the chance to see buffalo, cheetah, leopard and lion and almost guaranteed close-up sightings of elephant, giraffe and gazelle.

Maasai Mara National Reserve is among the country's, and indeed the world's, most famous safari areas and here we catch glimpses of yet more animals that can be seen elsewhere only in zoos.

Our exploration of Kenya's stellar landscapes includes visiting the Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru.

Prices below are per person , twin-sharing costs in Canadian Dollars (CAD) . Pricing does not include airfare to/from the tour and any applicable taxes. Day 1 Arrive in Nairobi Today we arrive in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Part of Maasai land when the British arrived, this modern capital grew with the development of the railway. Derived from a Maasai word meaning "Cold Water," Nairobi is a pleasant mix of colonial British with modern and traditional African influences. Overnight in Nairobi. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Nairobi - Ol Pejeta Conservancy Today we travel from Nairobi, through the "White Highlands," so called because of the large number of Europeans who settled here, northwards to the lower slopes of Mt Kenya, rising to 5199 m (16,728 feet), Africa's second highest peak. Our drive will take us into the Central Highlands, the heartland of the Kikuyu people. This is a very fertile region, well-watered, intensively cultivated, and thickly forested. The land was coveted by the Europeans who began arriving in ever-increasing numbers once the railway through the area was completed. The settlers established coffee and tea plantations on the eastern slopes of Mt Kenya and cultivated wheat on the western slopes. Our destination is Sweetwaters, a luxury tented camp clustered around a water hole and set in the pristine calm of the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a non-profit organization supporting endangered species, tourism and community outreach. Ol Pejeta is East Africa's largest Black Rhino sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, and holds some of the highest predator densities in Kenya. This afternoon we'll enjoy our first game drive within the conservancy. Overnight at Sweetwaters Camp. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3 Ol Pejeta Conservancy Ol Pejeta is a mosaic of grass plains, wooded grassland, acacia woodland and evergreen thicket extending for over 350 square kilometers. The conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals, including the "Big Five." We will have morning and afternoon game drives today, as well as a chance to visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary -- the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen. The facility was initially established to receive and provide lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. Here the chimpanzees are carefully nursed back to health so they can enjoy the rest of their days in the safety of a vast natural enclosure. Overnight at Sweetwaters Camp. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 Ol Pejeta - Great Rift Valley - Lake Nakuru National Park This morning we travel to Lake Nakuru, a shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley. The Rift Valley was created millions of years ago under the strain of enormous volcanic eruptions which resulted in a giant split in the earth's surface from Syria to Mozambique. Lava flowed into the valley, forming escarpments on either side of the gigantic trough which can be up to 80 km (50 miles) wide, big enough to be visible from space. At the lake, depending on the water levels, we may have the opportunity to see flamingos,* in addition to the over 340 species of birds that have been recorded in the Rift Valley! Lake Nakuru is very shallow and can fluctuate up to five metres (12 feet) each day. When the water is low, you can see a white band of crystallized soda along the shoreline. This is also one of the best places in Kenya to view the rare White Rhino as we explore the park on our afternoon game drive. * This, and other Rift Valley lakes, have been known in the past for huge numbers of flamingos; however, this can be very "hit and miss" owing to seasonal variations in rainfall and water level, and the increasing frequency of drought. The best we can do is hope for the best! Overnight in Lake Nakuru National Park. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5 Lake Nakuru - Maasai Mara National Reserve Early this morning we depart from Lake Nakuru National Park and continue our journey through the Rift Valley, passing by Lake Naivasha and nearby Mount Longonot, a relatively young volcanic reminder of the Rift's violent past. We arrive at our lodge (via bad road) in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in time for lunch. The Maasai Mara is a natural extension of the Serengeti eco-system and has an amazing concentration of wildlife. The largest population of lions in Kenya is found here, along with large herds of plains game. The Maasai Mara may also be the best place in Kenya to view cheetah. Later this afternoon we enjoy another game drive. Time-permitting, we may be able to visit a Maasai village to witness the local way of life and meet its residents. If time does not permit, we will attempt this visit the village on our way back to Nairobi. Overnight in the Maasai Mara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6 Maasai Mara National Reserve The Maasai Mara National Reserve consists of rolling grassland and is located at the northern end of the Serengeti Plain. Considered the best of Kenya's parks, it is on the pathway of the yearly wildebeest migration, which comes north from Tanzania about the end of June and returns to Tanzania around the end of September. "The Mara" sustains all of the "Big Five" -- lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros and buffalo -- as well as an astonishing wealth of herding animals and other wildlife. You can see the stately Maasai men and youth along the road tending their cattle and goats. We have a full day in the reserve, with morning and afternoon game drives. In the Mara you will also have an optional opportunity to ascend over the northern Serengeti at daybreak in a hot air balloon (optional expense). From over 300 m (984 feet) above, you will be able to view the vast land and the myriad animals that inhabit the Maasai Mara. Today or tomorrow are the best days to participate in this activity - details sent upon booking. Overnight in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7 Maasai Mara National Reserve We enjoy another full day with game viewing in Maasai Mara. Depending on the season and current game locations and viewing conditions, we may divide our day into morning and afternoon drives, or take our lunches with us in order to venture further into the reserve if conditions warrant. Overnight in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8 Maasai Mara - Nairobi After breakfast we depart for Nairobi. En route, just outside the capital, we visit the Karen Blixen Museum. Baroness Karen Blixen-Finecke emigrated from Denmark to Kenya in 1918 and, in 1937, wrote under the pseudonym, Isaac Dineson, "Out of Africa." The novel tells the tale of the Baroness's experiences on a Kenyan farm. Her home is now a museum, restored to the style in which she maintained it. Overnight in Nairobi. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Departure Departure from Nairobi. SAFIRI SALAAMA! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions All meals but one lunch are included (local restaurants and hotels). All transport, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Two bottles of bottled water per person daily. Gratuities for driver-guides, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers and for early arriving / late departing land & air customers who book their extra hotel nights through us.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, one lunch, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international (if applicable) air taxes, visa fees, and any excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on shopping and visas.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered throughout the year except during the "long rains" in April and May when travel and game viewing can be less than optimal. Nov-Jan: "short rains"; landscapes are green and many animals are giving birth. Showers come in the form of quick showers late in the day and rarely interfere with our activities or travel. Feb/Mar: Post-short rains with many migratory birds from Europe, though high grass can make game spotting a challenge. Airfares are lower. June-August coincides with the coolest and driest period, though also the busiest and most expensive due to the European holiday period. Sept/Oct is often hot and dusty though game viewing is excellent due to short grass and animals congregating around water sources. Airfares are lower than June-August. If you’re a fan of African wildlife photography/television programming, you’re likely familiar with and keen on witnessing the annual ‘Great Migration’ of wildebeest and zebra in the Serengeti and/or Maasai Mara. Unfortunately, there is no neat and tidy answer re when is the best time to possibly witness the spectacle as it doesn’t have a simple start or end, just a dynamic cycle of wild movement through the year. Nor is it the same each year either as the migration is largely driven by the unpredictable rains, which means that wildebeest migration doesn’t operate on a set schedule. It also doesn’t follow a set route. Nor do the animals all go the same way. That said, in the broadest of terms, the best time to see the Great Migration—meaning large herds of hooved animals—is probably during the dry season, between July and early October. This is not to say you won’t see them outside of this time as our travellers often do, but, like nature itself, it is all about luck and timing. They may not all be dramatically on the move, but rather just standing around eating and cavorting, but you’ll likely encounter the herds at some point on their/your journey. If you have your heart set of witnessing hundreds of wildebeest crossing a river en masse, getting chomped by crocodiles like you see on National Geographic, bear in mind that those photographers probably waited days or weeks to capture that exact moment—so good luck and happy ‘hunting’!

Transport and Travel Conditions Some road journeys are very long and very rough, possibly dusty. We travel via well-maintained, rugged minivan with six passengers each. The same vehicles, with roofs that pop up, will be used for our game drives in parks and reserves. Please note that air-conditioned safari vehicles are non-existent in East Africa.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Culture and customs.

Kenya is one of Africa’s most multicultural countries, with a population as diverse as its terrain. There are more than 40 different ethnic tribes, each with their own language, culture, and customs. The red-robed, beaded Maasai of the south are undoubtedly the most famous tribespeople of the region. The unique Swahili culture dominates the coastal regions and Islam is quite common in the North. Nairobi is home to a large swirl of humanity, with significant Indian, African, and Western populations. As a result, you’re likely to see mosques, churches, and temples, taste international cuisine from all over the world and hear the sounds of Kenyan hip-hop, traditional African drumming, and Western pop.

Depending on where you are in Kenya, the culture and customs vary according to the area you are visiting. The northern and coastal regions tend to be more traditional, while Nairobi, as an international hub of trade and commerce, tends to be more liberal. The Maasai and other tribes typically lead pastoral lives based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Their daily life is based on centuries of tradition and if you get the chance to visit a tribal village, you’ll be able to see the customs of these fascinating people firsthand. Traditional clothing, dance, song, and ceremonies keep this proud culture alive in the face of modernization, which is sweeping through the country.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

As a multiracial society, Kenya has many different cuisines for travelers to try. From traditional Swahili cuisine to Indian, European, and Middle Eastern food, many cultures are represented, especially in large cities like Nairobi. While the average Kenyan lives mostly on maize, beans, and vegetables, tourist areas and large cities offer much more variety for visitors.

Things to eat in Kenya

Kenya’s coastal areas, such as Mombasa and Lamu, are the best places to feast on fresh crab, lobster, oysters, and kingfish cooked to perfection in sumptuous spices.

2. Nyama Choma

One strictly for the carnivores, Nyama Choma is a popular Kenyan style of cooking and eating meat. Goat, beef, and chicken are roasted and served on a communal cutting board, sometimes with condiments such as chili, salt, chopped tomatoes, and avocado.

With a significant population hailing from India, Kenya is a great place to savor spicy curries made with an East African twist.

4. Tropical fruit

For a cheap and cost-effective snack, head to the market stalls that sell a colorful array of tropical fruit. Pineapples, papayas, bananas, and passionfruit are usually plentiful in Kenya. Any fruit that you can peel is a more hygienic, easy option than the one you have to wash.

Geography and environment

Kenya is located in East Africa, sharing borders with   Ethiopia , Somalia, Sudan,   Tanzania   , and   Uganda . With a diverse topography, Kenya has a wide variety of terrain – lofty mountains, dense rainforest, stark plains, and soft-sand beaches.

This diversity also applies to the environments that Kenya’s people live in. Kenya’s crowded capital is a heaving melange of cars, buses, skyscrapers, street stalls, markets, and people; the idyllic Loita Hills is the heart of Maasai country; the national parks run wild with exotic creatures; and rustic Lamu Island is a car-free piece of living history. Overall, most Kenyans either live a fast-paced existence in the modern metropolis of Nairobi or a quieter, agricultural-based life in Kenya’s rural towns and villages.

History and government

Early history.

Recent archaeological findings in Kenya have revealed the remains of one of the earliest species of hominid, placing Kenya among the first places inhabited by humans. Before the arrival of outsiders, Kenya was inhabited by nomadic tribes who most likely entered Kenya from the north. The Maasai and the Kikuyu were the most dominant in numbers, although the Maasai were well known for their reputation as strong warriors who often raided their neighbors.

During the 19th century, Kenya came under the influence of outside cultures due to the arrival of traders from the Middle East and Asia, and settlers and missionaries from Europe. Britain and Germany both had vested interests in Kenya for its abundance of natural resources (especially ivory) and because it was an important point for trade. As such, settlers from Britain, Germany, and other European nations flooded into the country in large numbers, setting up agricultural empires such as coffee plantations. These plantations relied heavily on local tribespeople for labor, much to the resentment of the indigenous populations. As a result of this, a large number of Indian laborers were brought to Kenya to work on plantations and build railroads. This Indian influence is reflected in the current population of Kenya.

Recent history

After much infighting, confrontation, uprising, and reform, Kenya was granted its independence from British colonial rule in 1963. The “Mau Mau Uprising” of the 1950s was responsible for drawing attention to the plight of the African population, and was also the catalyst for the change in how Kenya is governed.

The 1970s saw Kenya’s international economic profile grow due to the successful development of a free-market economy, with agriculture and tourism creating more a more stable economy. More recently, Kenya’s tourism industry has continued to develop and flourish, mainly due to its wealth of exotic animals, national parks, coastal hot-spots and unique cultures. Standards of living have also improved in Kenya, with an overall improvement in life expectancy, infant mortality, and fertility rates – probably due to the increased investment in family planning, education, and health by both the Kenyan government and NGOs. Despite this, many Kenyans still live below the poverty line and struggle to provide the bare necessities for themselves and their children. Regardless of this, travelers will be touched by the generosity of spirit and genuine hospitality that Kenyans display to visitors.

Top 10 wildlife encounters in Kenya

1. cheetah chase.

The cheetah, the Ferrari of the animal kingdom, is the fastest land animal on the planet. This slick predator can reach speeds of up to 120 km/hr and can accelerate to 103km/hr in just three seconds. Seeing a cheetah stealthily stalk, then pursue, a gazelle, springbok or an impala is a thrilling sight.

Spot the speedy cheetah on our 7 day Premium Kenya adventure.

2. Lioness kill

See the circle of life play out in Masai Mara National Reserve. Lions might be the kings of the jungle, but in Kenya, it's the lionesses that do the hunting. Working in groups, these big cats track down prey such as wildebeest, impalas, zebras and buffalo. If you are lucky, you will see a kill - the lionesses hunting together, encircling a herd then targeting the closest animal. The attack is swift and powerful - an experience you will never forget!

Watch the lioness in her natural habitat on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Tanzania tour.

3. Wildebeest migration

The annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeest across the grassy plains of Eastern Africa is an extraordinary spectacle of nature. The wildebeests risk drowning in rivers and attacks from big cats and crocodiles, to travel nearly 2,000 km in search of food and water. Around 200,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle also join this boisterous group each year, making it one of the greatest shows on earth.

Witness the wildebeest migration on our 8 day Kenya Wildlife Safari.

4. Sea of flamingos

See Lake Nakuru turn a shimmering sea of pink as millions of flamingos flock to feed in the shallow waters. The sheer amount of these long-legged creatures - among 400 species of birds that inhabit the area - is an incredible sight.

Marvel at flamingos on our 15 day Masai Heartlands adventure.

5. Elephant bath time

Elephants love water and, despite their size, they are excellent swimmers. To cool off from the scorching African sun, they splash about in lakes, paddle in rivers and give themselves a shower using their trunks. Witnessing these gentle giants having a bath is a truly memorable experience, but don't stand too close or you'll likely get very wet.

Catch a spray from elephants on our 13 day Premium Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya tour.

6. Rhino love

A baby rhino stays by its mother's side for up to five years after it is born and, during this time, mom is extremely protective of her calf. With an adult white rhino weighing up to 3,600 kg and reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h when charging, you don't want to get between a mother rhino and her baby. The best place for spotting the rare black rhino is Kenya's Aberdare National Park.

Snap some photos of these fascinating creatures on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa Highlights tour.

7. Giraffe parade

It's the classic African image – giraffes striding across the African savanna at sunset, nibbling on acacia trees and carving a graceful silhouette on the orange-tinged skyline. Kenya has the biggest giraffe population on the continent, so a dusk safari to see these unique creatures is a must.

Look up at Kenya's giraffe population on our 8 day Kenya Family Safari.

8. Hippos wallowing

One of Africa's best locations for hippo spotting is Lake Naivasha. Here, you can see large pods of these mighty animals submerged in the water and wallowing in mud. More than just social interaction, the water helps them cool down and protects their skin from drying out. With the exception of feeding, hippos spend most of their lives in the water - from childbirth and reproduction to fighting with other hippos - so it's very likely you'll see them playing in their aquatic playground.

Watch hippos playing in the water on our 31 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa In Depth tour.

9. Zebra crossing

For many, the highlight of the annual zebra migration is hundreds of thousands of these black-and-white-striped animals making the death-defying dash across the Mara River. Vulnerable to massive crocodiles lying in wait for a tasty meal, the zebras don't waste any time once they decide to take the plunge.

Admire these majestic animals on our 20 day Best of East Africa tour.

10. Monkey business

That chatter from the treetops above is most likely from cheeky colobus monkeys. As these creatures spend nearly all of their lives in the forest canopy, your best chance of spotting them is as they dart through the trees, a flurry of black and white fur. Treating branches like trampolines, they leap high into the air, then drop downward, using the long hair on their shoulders like a parachute. Listen out for males, whose croaking roars can often be heard resonating throughout the forest.

Point out swinging monkeys on one of our safari tours in Kenya.

From the large, lively markets of Nairobi to the small, slow-paced markets of the villages, shopping in Kenya is definitely "market-centric". Nairobi and other large cities have a range of boutiques and malls but, as in most other African countries, the buzzing markets are some of the best places to shop, eat and mingle with locals.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand for example have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Kenya

1. Handicrafts

The wood and soapstone carvings in Kenya are of great quality. Peruse the carvings at city markets and shops, or alternatively, buy direct from artisans in countryside villages.

2. Maasai jewellery

The colorful beaded creations of the Maasai make excellent souvenirs. Wear them as a bold, statement piece, or hang them on walls at home as a unique reminder of your time in Kenya.

Kenyan markets are full of vibrant fabric sarongs and wraps (also known as kikoys or kangas). Put these on your shopping list as they offer great protection from the African sun.

4. Kenyan music

Reggae, afro-rap, and African hip-hop are popular (especially in Kenya’s big cities), so stock up on some local music to bring a bit of Kenyan rhythm home with you.

Festival and events

Jamhuri day.

Feasts, speeches, parades, music, and dance all feature in this national holiday commemorating Kenya’s independence and the establishment of its republic. A mass celebration of freedom and unity, this is a big day for all Kenyan people. The day is celebrated on 12th December each year.

The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed turns Kenya’s Lamu Island from a sleepy village into a busy hub of activity. Pilgrims and visitors flock here for four days of devotional prayers and reverence, concluding with fun events such as donkey races, dhow sailing, traditional dance, and drumming.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination with many drawcards depending on the activities you want to do, the animals you'd like to see and the type of weather you'd prefer to experience.

Most safari destinations are at their best during the dry season from June to October or December to March when it's not too hot, rainfall is low and vegetation is thinner (making it easier to view wildlife). These periods coincide with the high tourist season, particularly in December and January, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation rates.

Do I need a visa to travel to Kenya?

Most nationalities – except 43 exempt nationalities including the Bahamas, Cyprus, South Africa , Malaysia, Singapore, Tanzania and  Zimbabwe  – require a visa to enter Kenya for travel, business or transit purposes. Check the official eligibility list for more information.

You must obtain a visa before you travel as visas on arrival are not available. The good news is that the process is fairly quick and easy and most nationalities can apply online.

The e-visa takes around three working days to process, but you should apply two weeks prior to travel to be on the safe side.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Kenya?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Kenya but a little generosity will be received positively, especially considering the low wages that Kenyan service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Kenya?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Kenya’s large cities but should expect limited or no access in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Kenya?

Cell phone coverage is good in Kenya’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your mobile phone.

What are the toilets like in Kenya?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Kenya, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Street food (plate of stew) = 300-500 KES
  • Bottle of beer in a local bar = 250-500 KES
  • Food court or fast-food meal = 500-700 KES
  • Meal at a sit-down restaurant = 4000+ KES

Can I drink the water in Kenya?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Kenya. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Kenya?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Kenya?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and tourist areas like Nairobi and Mombasa but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Kenya?

  • 1 Jan New Year's Day
  • 2 Jan New Year Holiday
  • Good Friday*
  • Easter Monday*
  • 1 May-Labour Day
  • 1 Jun Madaraka Day / National Day
  • Idd ul Fitr / End of Ramadan
  • Idd ul Azha (Muslims only)
  • Diwali (Hindus only)
  • 20 Oct Mashujaa Day
  • 12 Dec Jamhuri Day
  • 25 Dec Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec Boxing Day

Please note, Kenya public holidays may vary.

What should I pack for Kenya?

Kenyans dress conservatively so it's important that you do the same to respect the local culture and customs. Dressing conservatively doesn't mean you need to cover yourself from head to toe, but you should wear long, loose-fitting clothing that covers your knees, shoulders, midriff and chest. Long layers are also more effective in keeping you cool and protecting your skin from the sun and insects.

You'll need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, long and loose-fitting layers (think knee-length shorts, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, etc), a pair of sandals, a warm fleece, sun-protective gear (sunglasses, a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunscreen), and insect repellent. You'll also need a reusable water bottle, a day bag and maybe a headlamp if you're camping.

Is Kenya LGBTQIA+ friendly?

LGBTQIA+ travelers who want to visit Kenya should exercise caution and avoid engaging in public displays of affection. That said, even public displays of affection for hetero couples can raise eyebrows.

Homosexuality is still illegal in Kenya and can be punishable by prison time. The criminalization of same-sex relationships was acquired from Britain before Kenya was granted independence in 1963 and has not been reviewed since.

Kenyan society is largely conservative and identifying as LGBTQIA+ is often considered to be a taboo. There are also no laws to protect LGBTQIA+ people against discrimination.

Is Kenya accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Does my trip to Kenya support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Donations from our trips support restoration across planting sites in 10 countries, including Kenya and Nepal.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Visit a Maasai village

When you embark on a Kenya safari with Trafalgar, we’ll delve deeper into the culture of the country. We’ll visit a Maasai community, where you’ll meet a village elder and gain insights into their daily life. Admire flamingos on Lake Nakuru

A game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the most remarkable activities in Kenya. Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum commemorates the famous Danish author who wrote the globally renowned novel, ‘Out of Africa’. She lived in Kenya from 1917 to 1931 and ran a coffee farm from a bungalow in the Ngong Hills. The book went on to become a film, and you can see many of the props at the museum.

Located on the coastline of Mombasa, Fort Jesus was built in the late 1500s by the king of Portugal. The fort switched ownership many times throughout history, as countries battled for the lands of Kenya, and today the well-preserved grounds are a UNESCO-listed national park.

Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site & Museum

This incredible museum and former farmhouse displays over 400 artefacts found on Hyrax Hill, ranging from hunting tools to musical instruments. It’s a momentous historical site, where archaeological excavations have unearthed evidence of life dating back 5,000 years.

Best museums in Kenya

Ugali is the quintessential side dish of any Kenyan meal. It’s a doughy cornmeal porridge, typically used to dip into curries and tangy sauces, or served with salads. It’s also a classic part of Luhya wedding customs, and is traditionally served with other Kenyan delicacies on the bride’s table.

Nyama Choma

Nyama choma, or Kenyan grilled meat, is a beloved dish commonly served at Kenya festivals and family celebrations. The name means ‘roast meat’ in Swahili and goat meat is the most commonly used. You can find it everywhere from street stalls to fine restaurants, and it’s best eaten with your hands.

Chips Mayai

Chips mayai is Kenya’s delicious version of the omelette. It’s a popular street food across East Africa, made from an egg omelette filled with potato fries. It can also be cooked with onions, bell peppers and meat, and it’s traditionally eaten with a toothpick.

Best food in Kenya

Safaris From Nairobi - Compare 1,641 Tours

Nairobi is the starting point of just about every Kenya safari, and the possibilities of where you can go from Kenya’s capital are rich and varied. Roads fan out across the country from Nairobi, while both the main international airport and smaller Wilson Airport have a range of flights to towns and remote airstrips in national parks, reserves and conservancies nationwide. Remember that Kenya is the birthplace of the East African safari, and choosing which parks to visit and matching these to the animals you most wish to see requires careful planning. And it will absolutely be worth it.

5 Questions About Safaris From Nairobi

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

out of africa tours kenya

Where can I go on a safari from Nairobi?

“You can go anywhere in Kenya on safari from Nairobi. That’s because the capital is where most people arrive in the country, and most parks or reserves are an easy drive (or a much shorter flight) from here. Best of all, Nairobi is one of few cities in Africa that has a world-class wildlife park (Nairobi National Park) in the city’s outer suburbs. Make sure you visit the park before heading out to the other parks that are farther away. The most popular safari destinations from Nairobi are the Masai Mara National Reserve to the west, Lake Nakuru National Park to the northwest and Amboseli National Park in the southeast. If you’re visiting Amboseli, then Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks are not far away. Close to Lake Nakuru you’ll find the other Rift Valley lakes, such as Lake Naivasha. Out west, the Masai Mara is surrounded by community conservancies that are also outstanding places to go on safari. If you’re willing to travel a little farther, in the north there’s Samburu National Reserve.”

How much time do I need for a Kenya trip from Nairobi?

“How you answer this question will depend on how much time you have to spare and how much money you have to spend. That’s because you could easily spend a month or two on safari in Kenya and still not see everything. Count on spending at least 1 day in and around Nairobi, although Kenya’s capital really does deserve at least a couple of days. If you decide to visit Amboseli or Lake Nakuru National Parks, 2 days for each is really a minimum. For Amboseli, add a couple of extra days each for Tsavo West and Tsavo East. For the Masai Mara, plan on a minimum of 3 days, but ideally you should dedicate more time here. And remember, when calculating the length of your safari you’ll need to allow for the time you spend traveling to and from each destination. Many travelers also combine time spent on safari with a beach holiday, so you might wish to factor that in too, if that’s a priority.”

Can I see the Big Five animals on a trip from Nairobi?

“Seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) is certainly possible on a safari from Nairobi. One of the best places to see the Big Five is Ol Pejeta Conservancy, up on the Laikipia Plateau and within a half-day’s journey from Nairobi. Often it is the rhino that is most difficult of the Big Five to see. Apart from the Laikipia Plateau (Ol Pejeta, Lewa or Borana Conservancies, for example), the easiest places to see rhinos are Nairobi National Park or Lake Nakuru National Park. Both of these parks have four of the Big Five; neither has elephants. If you were to combine one or more of these parks with the Masai Mara, Amboseli or one of the Tsavos, then you would have a good chance of seeing the five species (in addition to so many other animals).”

Should I go for a road or fly-in safari from Nairobi?

“The major factors when considering whether to make your trip a road or fly-in safari are time and money. Flying has a number of advantages. One is that it will get you where you want to go so much more quickly, maximizing the amount of time you get to spend in the parks themselves (as opposed to traveling between the parks). Many of Kenya’s major roads are clogged with traffic and none too beautiful, so you won’t be missing much if you fly. And you have the added benefit of enjoying remarkable views on your way to wherever it is that you’re going. It may take longer but traveling by road will be much more affordable for many travelers. That’s because flying doesn’t come cheap. If you travel by road, you also get to see more of the country up close, which is a great way to meet locals (something which is less likely if you travel by air).”

How much will this safari cost?

“It depends on the possible tours and packages on offer, but there is endless variety when it comes to the price of a safari from Nairobi. The cheapest safari could cost US$100 per person per day for a budget camping safari, and it could rise to 10 times that for a high-end luxury safari trip. Factors to take into account when considering potential costs are whether you travel in high or low season; which kind of accommodation you choose; whether you travel on a private or a cheaper group safari; how long you plan to be on safari; and whether your safari includes any flights. When you receive a quote from a tour operator, always make sure that you understand what’s included. Most quotes should include park entry fees, transfers, meals, some drinks, accommodation (including camping equipment, where needed), vehicle, driver, game drives and a guide.”

The safari experience in Kenya is one of the best on Earth. There are 23 national parks and game reserves in Kenya, each offering their own unique experience. Often regarded as the best in all of Africa however, is the Masai Mara National Reserve. This park, located on the southern border of Kenya and Tanzania, is where Disney’s The Lion King was researched and based on. Home to an abundance of big cats and the wildebeest migration (between the months of July and November), the Masai Mara offers a phenomenal safari experience.

What our guests say

Thank You David and Adina for a wonderful and well-organised tour. You created a wonderful atmosphere amongst the group.

Thank you everyone for helping make this trip so amazing. It honestly felt like one big family

Had dinner with a friend last night, and found myself gushing about my Iceland trip: the sights, the tour guides, the people on the tour, the food. It was a special trip.

It was truly an absolutely terrific trip in all ways:

In the organized touring, in the beautiful places we visited, in the inspiring Hashkafah that everything was presented with, in the wonderful, friendly group of people we shared the trip with, in the delicious meals, in the pleasant, loving, and joyous manner of our hosts. It was a summer to remember.

The greatest trip we have ever experienced!

Thanks to David and Adina and their wonderful team. See you soon ❤

Pinhas and Léa Kerendian

Dear David and Adina,

We've been on many tours over the years, but this one was extra-special. The attention to detail, the "service with a (constant) smile", and the outstanding touring and catering were unparalleled.

We're so happy to have gotten to know you both and look forward to touring with you in the future.

Tamar and Jay Bindiger

You are wonderful guides and very special people. All your planning made for a wonderful trip.

Looking forward to more trips!

Thanks for everything!

Many thanks for a wonderful tour of Iceland. You were both terrific guides and hosts. The food was fabulous, and the staff was TERRIFIC.

Bill and Toby Albert

Your scholarship and passion for the land and its history were very much appreciated. You helped us feel welcomed and valued as visitors to the Holy Land.

We particularly enjoyed feeling your excitement about the discoveries associated with The City of David. The ending ascent up the stairs heading to the Temple Mount was wonderfully moving, reminding us how anciently Israelites would ascend to the Mount to worship in the Temple.

Thank you… for reminding me that deep inside I still have the joy of a child to help me get through every single day. Going with you to Iceland was like going to Disneyland for the first time.

There are no words to describe our experience! No photos, clips, or stories will do it justice! The wealth of knowledge, the organization, the humor, the kindness, the calm, welcoming attitude of David and Adina. The understanding of us as a group, our very many different natures, wants, and needs. They and all the rest of the staff. There was NOTHING that we could dream of or ask for that they didn't go out of their way to deliver and over-deliver! The abundance, the presentation, and, of course, the variety and taste of every single bite!

I hope your second and third weeks went as well as the first week Please keep in touch when you know the next trip you are planning I would definitely love to go again with you I have been on many group tours and you did an amazing job I told all my friends about you.

Day-by-day itinerary

out of africa tours kenya

Board your overnight flight to Nairobi today.

Welcome to Kenya! Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your hotel.

Please note: Most flights from North America arrive late in the evening.

Climb into 4x4 land cruisers and set out to discover notable landmarks and local culture in and around Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city.

  • Watch elephants bathe and eat during a stop at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which has operated an orphan elephant rescue and wildlife rehabilitation program since its founding in 1977.
  • Learn about the rescued, orphaned elephants, their trusted keepers, and the organization’s conservation work across Kenya.
  • Enjoy an included welcome lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant in Nairobi.
  • Visit Sandstorm Kenya, a company that began as a maker of safari tents and now employs 40 Maasai craftspeople who hand-make totes, backpacks, and other styles of bags from locally sourced canvas and leather.
  • Tour Sandstorm’s facilities to learn how its bags are made, from the sourcing of materials to the finished product.

Tonight, gather with your Tour Director and fellow group members at a mixer before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant.

Travel south to Amboseli National Park today. This roughly 150-square-mile natural area sits against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro and is known for its population of wild African elephants.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your safari lodge or camp.
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive after lunch.
  • Ride along with your expert driver and naturalist guide in search of elephants, leopards, lions, baboons, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, kudus, hippos, rhinos, wildebeest, and dozens more animals.

Join your tour mates for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

This morning, head out on your first game drive of the day and marvel at Amboseli National Park’s huge herds of elephants, as well as ostriches, leopards, lions, and rhinos.

Later, meet a wildlife conservation expert from a local nonprofit animal welfare organization.

  • Hear how locals and park rangers work together to protect the wildlife.
  • Ask the expert any questions you have about anti-poaching efforts and animal conservation.

After an included lunch, head back out for a second game drive through Amboseli National Park.

Enjoy an included dinner served with beer or wine after freshening up this evening.

Travel through scenic, highland landscapes—and make a photo stop at the equator—on your way to the Great Rift Valley. This astoundingly beautiful region is an important center of ecological study. Its sparkling lakes and steep, rocky escarpments serve as havens for wildlife, such as black rhinos, rare Rothschild giraffes, and more than a dozen globally threatened bird species.

  • Continue on to the vast and ancient Lake Naivasha, which, at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, is the highest of the Great Rift Valley’s three best-known lakes.
  • Enjoy an included lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant.
  • Set out on a boat tour of Lake Naivasha, which is known for its substantial population of hippos and bird species.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Continue through the Great Rift Valley as you travel to the Maasai Mara, a nearly 600-square-mile national reserve in southwestern Kenya known for its vast plains and abundant wildlife. The region is also home to the Maasai people, an indigenous tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists whose livelihood revolves around cattle. Brightly colored clothing and beaded jewelry are among many traditions the Maasai people have maintained, while other tribes have adopted more modern styles of living.

Immerse yourself in the Maasai way of life during a visit to a local boma, or homestead.

  • Join members of the Maasai tribe in their signature adamu, or jumping dance.
  • Tour a functioning Maasai boma—a collection of mud-hut homes—and discover the tribe’s history and heritage.
  • Visit a market where Maasai people sell handiworks and crafts, and learn how money from visitors’ purchases sustains the tribe.
  • Receive your own Maasai name and learn the meaning behind it.

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Today, get to know the awe-inspiring animals of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

  • In order to enter Kenya (and Zanzibar, which is a semi-autonomous province of Tanzania, on the tour extension), U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must purchase an individual visa from the Kenyan government’s Electronic Travel Authority website ( etakenya.go.ke/en ) prior to departure. You can also purchase your ETA by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral .
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter Tanzania on the tour extension (U.S. citizens must apply for a multiple entry visa). While it is possible to obtain a visa at the border, we strongly recommend purchasing your visa in advance, as wait times upon arrival can exceed two hours. You can purchase an electronic visa on the Tanzanian Electronic Visa Portal website . You may also submit a request for a paper visa by visiting your local embassy or purchase your visa in advance by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral . You will need to have your visa receipt with you upon arrival in Tanzania.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code KE6.
  • You will walk for about 45 minutes daily across mostly flat terrain, including some paved roads, unpaved trails, and dirt paths.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times. This tour also includes long, bumpy rides in safari vehicles. You should feel comfortable stepping up and down to get in and out of the vehicles, standing for long periods of time, and maintaining your balance.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special, individual mobility assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group as a whole enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing, individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • For the duration of your tour you will be assigned to your own Driver Guide and their vehicle in groups of four-six. There will also be one Lead Driver Guide for the whole group.
  • You will have different Driver Guides in each country and they will be leading your group throughout your journey through Kenya and Tanzania.
  • Your Driver Guide will provide commentary during your game drives which builds on each days activity of the course of your tour.
  • The role of the Lead Driver Guide is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • On some departures, you will have a dedicated Tour Director in additional to your Driver Guides if your group size is over twenty.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Nairobi. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
  • During your game drives, you’ll travel in a specially equipped 4x4 safari land cruiser. The vehicle is open, allowing for panoramic views. Window seats are guaranteed for all travelers. Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride.
  • A round-trip flight between Nairobi and Stone Town, Zanzibar, is included in the price of the tour extension.
  • Airlines impose varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on safari vehicles.
  • You’ll need one overnight bag, such as a backpack or small collapsible duffle bag.
  • One small carry-on bag is also permitted (it can double as your overnight bag).
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag. Safari luggage restrictions are strict and strongly enforced. It’s essential that your luggage meet the following requirements: A soft, flexible duffel bag (absolutely no hard suitcases or bags with hard sides are permitted).
  • Your bags can be no larger than 34” W by 17” H by 15” L.
  • The total weight cannot exceed 44 pounds (including your camera equipment and carry-on bag).
  • Loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures will be most comfortable. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside, and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
  • Wear muted colors for game drives, as bright clothing may scare animals away and blue or black clothing attracts tsetse flies.
  • Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
  • Pack a swimsuit, as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
  • Mosquito repellent, binoculars, and a flashlight are highly recommended.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • The Kenyan government strictly bans plastic bags. It is illegal to use, sell, or carry plastic bags anywhere in the country under the new law, and violators will face charges, including high fines or imprisonment. Please bring reusable cloth bags if you plan to go shopping on tour, and do not pack any plastic bags, including small resealable bags.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • Local governments may require proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine. This is only required of travelers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever virus transmission (this does not include the U.S. or Canada). Visit cdc.gov/yellowfever for more information.
  • If you’re traveling on the tour extension to Tanzania, you’re required to provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they’re cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • Bring a small first-aid kit, including antacids, anti-diarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry-on luggage.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Cuisine in your game lodges reflects the region’s British colonial influence—you may find that many locals pause for afternoon tea. Most restaurants offer curries and other South Asian cuisine brought over by the many Indian immigrants. Maize, sweet potatoes, and pineapple were brought over by the Portuguese, and beef has been a staple since the 1600s.
  • On the tour extension, spicy foods are common in Tanzania, and many dishes are infused with coconut milk. Meals often consist of maize, tender grilled meats, maize porridge, and local vegetables. Most restaurants offer curries and other South Asian cuisine brought over by Indian immigrants.
  • Kenya operates on the British standard 240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • Tanzania (on the tour extension) operates on 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • Not all of the hotels on this tour will have air conditioning.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Power outages are common. In some of the camps, power is turned off in the late afternoon as well as in the early morning.
  • Wi-Fi is available in some hotels, though charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches or safari vehicles.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Kenya (and Tanzania on the tour extension) is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and eight hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 8pm in Nairobi.
  • The currency you’ll be using on your tour is the Kenyan shilling (and the Tanzanian shilling on the tour extension).
  • You may be able to purchase Kenyan shillings in advance from your local bank or a foreign currency exchange retailer, such as Travelex. There is no limit on importing currency into Kenya, but please note travelers are restricted from carrying more than $100,000 in Kenyan shillings out of the country (and cannot export more than $5,000 in Tanzanian shillings from Tanzania on the tour extension).
  • We recommend that you carry as little local cash as possible as well as small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later).
  • ATMs are most readily available in Nairobi; while there, we recommend taking out cash in small bills to have on safari.
  • Major North American credit cards are accepted but can be difficult to use in remote locations (Visa is the most widely accepted).
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Driver Guide (and Tour Director if your group has one) a gratuity in US dollars.
  • We recommend tipping $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Driver Guide and $2USD to $3USD per person per day for your Tour Director (if your group has one).
  • If applicable, we also recommend tipping $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.

Out of Africa: Tauck’s Safari Experience in Kenya & Tanzania

Tauck escorted tours to East Africa deliver a superb wildlife experience and a chance to straddle the Equator too. Photo by Tauck.

Travelers who return home after their African safari often say: “Exploring Africa has changed me forever. It’s an incredible travel experience I’ll never forget.”

So today, in a new feature –our first “ Experiential Pavlus ” blog, two personal travel planners from Pavlus Travel   will provide a “firsthand take” on one activity or experience in their travels. For one advisor, that was an East Africa game drive. For the other, it was an Equator-straddling experience!

(Photo above shows wildlife that Tauck’s guests typically see on safari. Photo by Tauck.)

Look for upcoming Experiential Pavlus blogs to focus on e verything from the Military Tattoo in Scotland to a visit to Mont St. Michels that was a bit out of a Harry Potter movie. Now, though, here’s firsthand feedback on two different “Out of Africa” experiences …

Out of Africa: Elephants Galore!

Lee Alvarez , a Pavlus personal travel from Albuquerque, NM, reflects about her unforgettable wildlife encounter on Tauck’s “ Kenya and Tanzania: A Classic Safari .”

After crossing the border into Kenya, her Tauck tour group — riding in Landcruiser safari vehicles — motored for a few hours through through Kenya’s small towns and villages. It was a deep dive into African culture, as she watched “the locals” go about their daily activities.

The highlight of the tour, though, unfolded on a game drive outing. “Once we arrived at Amboseli National Park in the shadow of Mount Kilamanjaro, our vehicle crossed a dried salt lake,” says Alvarez. “Suddenly, a large herd of elephants moved toward the Landcruiser.”

From there, she describes the unfolding scene (shown in the photo below) as something right out of a movie.

Elephants traverse a dry salt lake at Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Photo by Lee Alvarez.

“We watched as the herd’s mature elephants lovingly protected some of the baby elephants as they crossed the dried, dusty terrain,” she says. “The sounds were incredible.”

She’d been to Africa in the past and had seen wildlife herds before. But absolutely nothing else she’s experienced has compared to this wildlife experience.

“I looked around our Landcruiser and a few of us were just in tears,” Alvarez emphasizes. “It was so magical and moving. I’ll never forget it!”

How to Experience?

Lee Alvarez, personal travel planner, Pavlus Travel, enjoyed the wildlife experiences on a Tauck safari in East Africa. Photo by Lee Alvarez.

That initial elephant experience was the epitome of many pachyderm encounters for Alvarez. She set off on multiple game drives from the Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge.

That lodge is located just outside the national park, which is home to 1,600 elephants. Thus, those exploring Amboseli have a very good chance of spotting these animals.

Desire a similar elephant experience? Pavlus’ Alvarez suggests customers check out the tour she took:  Tauck’s 13-day “ Kenya and Tanzania: A Classic Safari .”

In addition to Amboseli, tour goers will visit Serengeti National Park , Masai Mara National Reserve and Lake Manyara National Park . One bonus is the possibility of spotting unusual, tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara!

At press time, pricing started at $11,790, including “on-tour air.” This escorted tour is operated in January, February, October and December.

Out of Africa: Straddling the Equator!

But it’s not just zebras, giraffes and elephants that await in East Africa. Kenya is among just 13 countries traversed by the Equator.

“The Equator was a very special treat for me because it was a ‘bucket list’ item of mine,” says Fia Bauer , Pavlus Travel’s personal travel planner in Albuquerque, NM. So what’s the Equator-straddling experience all about?

Pavlus Travel's Fia Bauer is shown about to "straddle" the Equator line, and walk it as well -- not an easy effort given gravitational pulls from either side. Photo by Fia Bauer.

“As someone who loves science, trying to balance while walking on the Equator line — versus just doing the same a few inches to either side in each hemisphere — is such an amazing experience,” she emphasizes. “While walking that line can be done, it’s much harder than it should be just to walk in a straight line.”

That’s because the gravity of the Earth’s pull varies.”You really have to focus to not lose your balance,” she says.

“It’s truly amazing that just mere feet apart the gravitational pull will spin water clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere,” Bauer explains.

Resort on the Equator

During this part of her Tauck escorted tour, Bauer also stayed at the iconic Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club within the foothills of Mount Kenya. Her Equator-focused adventure also carried over to this stay.

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club also is astride the Equator. Photo by Fia Bauer.

“Our hotel was also nestled on the Equatorial line,” she notes. “So, breakfast was in one hemisphere and dinner in the other. That was an unexpected and amazing experience.”

She enjoyed the entire tour, but adds: “The Equator-straddling experiences were the icing on the cake!”

Out of Africa: Elephants and the Equator

Good to know? Alvarez and Bauer — as with all Pavlus Travel personal travel planners — graduated from the Tauck Academy . In addition, Pavlus Travel is the world’s largest seller of Tauck, so customers will find skilled professional travel advisors who will answer questions based on firsthand experiences.

Typically, they also can offer special, unadvertised discounts or an amenity.

Why not call today about taking an East Africa escorted tour? Before you know it, you’ll be straddling the Equator and gazing at elephants in the wild!

KeNHA: Sections of Naivasha and Suswa roads impassable, expect heavy traffic

Heavy rains are being experienced in many parts of the country amid calls for caution.

At least 20 people have been confirmed dead following flash floods that wiped out several homes in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County following the heavy rains.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has now rendered the Mai Mahiu route impassable advising motorists to find alternative routes.

In a travel advisory, the agency has told motorists plying the Naivasha and Narok routes to expect heavy traffic congestion today.

According to KeNHA, approximately 700 meters from Mai Mahiu towards Naivasha and 1km from Mai Mahiu towards Suswa/Narok have been affected.

“These areas are heavily affected, with road blockages reported. Currently, traffic is at a standstill around Mai Mahiu centre,” KeNHA said.

It has attributed this to the heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kinale and Kijabe have led water courses to experience an upsurge which has led to the washing away of debris and several houses.

"Motorists are advised to expect high traffic congestion around Mai Mahiu. Road users are expected to plan their routes accordingly and exercise caution when travelling through the affected areas ,” it said.

The floodwaters originated from a nearby river that broke its banks on Sunday night, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

“Several people have been taken to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods affecting Kamuchiri Village,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

“The floodwaters are reported to have originated from a nearby river that broke its banks.”

Naivasha police commander Stephen Kirui confirmed the tragedy saying rescue missions were ongoing.

He said that several others have been rushed to Naivasha Hospital for treatment.

The toll may increase as the search and rescue mission goes on in the area.

Teams from the Kenya Police, County Disaster team, Kenya Red Cross and community members are at the scene, officials said.
