American express payout: who got the money and points.

Nick Dunlap earned a place in history by winning The American Express on Sunday, but, as an amateur, he didn’t collect any earnings. And as a PGA Tour non-member, he didn’t get any FedExCup points, either.
Runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout, per Tour rules, was awarded first-place money but not the 500 points given to a Tour winner. No one got those, as the South African collected second-place points.
Here’s a look at how the purse was paid out and points were distributed to those who made the cut in La Quinta, California:

Who Are The Star Names In The American Express?
After the Sony Open in Hawaii saw a payout of $8.3m, there’s an even larger prize fund on offer as the PGA Tour heads to California for The American Express.
A purse of $8.4m is available at the tournament that takes place across three courses - the Pete Dye Stadium Course, La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Tournament Course. The winner is set to take home $1.512m, while the runner-up will earn $915,600.
That’s the same payout that was available for several tournaments last year, including the Honda Classic, Houston Open and RSM Classic and falls just $600,000 short of the $9m available at the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2024, the Hero Dubai Desert Classic .
The purse also represents an increase of $400,000 from last year’s tournament, when Jon Rahm lifted the trophy and claimed $1.44m. This year’s fund is also $2.5m higher than the purse from just five years ago, highlighting the huge sums in the game since the emergence of the circuit Rahm has since signed for, LIV Golf .
Jon Rahm won the title in 2023, but is now with LIV Golf
As well as the attractive financial incentive, there are also 500 FedEx Cup points available to the winner, as well as world ranking points to play for.
Below is the prize money payout for The American Express.
Patrick Cantlay finished runner-up at the 2021 tournament
The return of the PGA Tour to mainland US after two tournaments in Hawaii has attracted a strong field despite The American Express not being one of this year’s signature events.

The standout name is undoubtedly Scottie Scheffler , who is top of the world rankings. He makes his first start since finishing T5 at The Sentry, while two more players in the world’s top 10, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele , also play. Cantlay, in particular, will be confident of success after he finished runner-up at the tournament in 2021.
Other big names to look out for include the winner at The Sentry, Chris Kirk , PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Eric Cole, former World No.1 Jason Day and Tony Finau , who dispelled speculation he would join Rahm as a LIV Golf player in a social media update before Christmas.
Seven-time PGA Tour winner Billy Horschel also plays, along with Rickie Fowler, who enjoyed a significant career resurgence in 2023, but missed the cut at The Sentry. He’ll be hoping to get firmly back on track here.
Team Europe Ryder Cup heroes Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre are also in the field, while Will Zalatoris competes too, as he continues his recovery from back surgery. The American missed the cut at the Sony Open and he will be looking to make it as far as the weekend.
Another player who has been beset by injury in recent times is Daniel Berger , but after 18 months out with a back injury, he makes his long-awaited return to action this week.
Rising star Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee, who earned his PGA Tour card after a successful 2023 on the DP World Tour , and Team US Ryder Cup player Sam Burns , also play.
Elsewhere, former champions in the field include Si Woo Kim, Jason Duffner, Andrew Landry and Adam Long, while there are also appearances from Sony Open winner Grayson Murray, PGA Championship hero Michael Block and two-time PGA Champion Justin Thomas.
Who Won The American Express In 2023?
Last year, Jon Rahm followed up victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions with another triumph at The American Express, when he beatt Davis Thompson by one shot to claim his second victory at the tournament. The Spaniard does not appear in this week’s field as he has since joined LIV Golf.
Who Is Playing At The 2024 American Express?
Despite the 2024 edition not being one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, there is still a strong field, including World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, and two others in the world’s top 10 – Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Other big names appearing include Shane Lowry, Billy Horschel and Sam Burns.

American Express money: What happens to purse if amateur Nick Dunlap wins
Nick Dunlap enters American Express Sunday on the brink of a historic PGA Tour victory.

After four action-packed days in Palm Springs, Calif., we’ve finally reached the last round of play at the 2024 American Express. Below, find everything you need to know about tournament money, including total payout, tournament purse, and of course, winner’s share.
American Express final round preview
Well, well, well — the third week of the 2024 PGA Tour season already has us on the brink of golf history. On Sunday, amateur Nick Dunlap — a college sophomore — will attempt to do the unthinkable : winning a PGA Tour event as an amateur. Dunlap enters Sunday at the American Express with a considerable head start, clinging to a three-stroke 54-hole lead over Sam Burns and Justin Thomas after a record-tying 12-under 60 on Saturday, the lowest single-round score for an amateur since Patrick Cantlay’s identical score at the Travelers Championship in 2011. The two scores are tied for the lowest since at least 1983.
A victory on Sunday would put Dunlap, already the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win both the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Amateur, in rarified golf air. The 20-year-old University of Alabama star would be the first pro since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur, a feat rarely even flirted with in the modern golf era.
Thomas, a fellow member of the Tide, will attempt to stop Dunlap’s chase for history. A victory for him would be his first since the 2022 PGA Championship, and offer the chance at a refresh victory after a disastrous 2023. His performance on Saturday was sparkling, including a lip-out for a hole-in-one, and his swing looks as easy and confident as it has in some time. Thomas and Burns, Dunlap’s more experienced SEC brethren, are a dangerous pairing to chase a 20-year-old.
Of course, Dunlap’s potential victory presents some interest financially. As an amateur, he cannot collect on the American Express’ $1.5 million winner’s check, meaning he will be forced to forfeit the money. Fortunately for the others in the field in Palm Springs, the cash doesn’t disappear into the ether. Should Dunlap win, the money would simply move down to the next player, meaning Thomas, Burns, or whoever finishes second will collect the full $1.5 million check. If you’re looking for more info on how that payout would be structured, look no further. Below is the complete payout information, including winner’s share, for the American Express’ $8.4 million purse; you can catch the action this afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.

OK, by now in the 2021-22 PGA Tour wrap-around season you know the drill: If you’re going to contend for a title on Sunday, you’re going to have to shoot a pretty low number.
Through the first 11 events prior to this week’s American Express, the average final-round score from the winner has been 65.27. Seven times the winner has shot 65 or lower, including the last four tournaments reaching back to the Houston Open last fall.
It was no different this Sunday in the California desert. Yes, PGA West’s Stadium Course has some treachery baked in, notably the par-3 island-green 17th with its rocky perimeter raising the pulse for those in contention. But the final-round scores of winners here in the recent past is also impressive: 64, 67, 65, 67 and 67 over the last five years.
Now add a 64 from Hudson Swafford. The 34-year-old from St. Simons Island, Ga., rallied from three off the lead to take the title for the second time in six years with nine birdies and an eagle on Sunday, beating Tom Hoge by two shots.
MORE: The clubs Husdon Swafford used to win at PGA West
Maybe it wasn’t a surprise the winner would be of the come-from-behind variety. The most interesting variable heading into the final round was the inexperience of those in contention coming into the final round. Lee Hodges and Paul Barjon, co-leaders at 18 under par, were PGA Tour rookies, each making just their 14th tour starts. Neither had carded a top-10 in their career much less a victory, so this was new territory for both. Hodges closed with a 70 to finish T-3; Barjon shot a 73 to come in 10th.
For Swafford, despite two previous PGA Tour wins, the AmEx victory earned him the biggest check of his career. The overall prize money payout is $7.6 million with the winner earning $1.368 million. Here’s the prize money payouts for every golfer who made the cut at this week’s event. Come back shortly after the end of the tournament and we’ll update this with individual names and specific prize money earned.

Why a 20-year-old golfer can’t collect $1.5-million prize after PGA Tour win in SoCal
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Nick Dunlap is the first winner of the American Express event on the PGA Tour who likely leaves home without an American Express card.
The 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Alabama is an amateur golfer, so he couldn’t accept the $1.5-million prize earmarked for the winner of the tournament once known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic that ended Sunday in La Quinta.
The win was historic. Dunlap, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, is the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson won the Northern Telecom Open in 1991. He also is the second-youngest player to win a Tour event in the last 90 years (Dunlap is 20 years, 29 days old; Jordan Spieth won the 2013 John Deere Classic at 19 years, 352 days).

July 14, 2013
But the big check goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout , who finished one shot behind Dunlap’s 29-under-par 259. Dunlap also misses out on 500 FedExCup points, which would put him in the running for a healthy chunk of the $70-million bonus pool distributed at the end of the year.
After the victory, Dunlap said he isn’t sure whether to join the Tour now or return to Tuscaloosa. He clearly is a star in the making, the only golfer besides Tiger Woods to win the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur.
“I have to take a second to let what just happened sink in a little bit,” he said after celebrating with his parents and girlfriend. “That’s a decision that’s not just about me. It affects a lot of people, and obviously I’m going to try to enjoy this.”
Even if Dunlap stays in school, the victory will give him an exemption into the PGA Championship. He’d already earned three-year exemptions into the Masters, U.S. Open and the Open Championship as the winner of the U.S. Amateur.

Turning pro now normally would cause an amateur to lose exemptions into those majors, but because he now has a PGA Tour victory on his resume he’d be awarded exemptions that way.
All of which gives Dunlap much to consider when he decides whether to bother doing the homework he brought with him to the West Coast — he’ll stay in California for another week to play at Torrey Pines on a sponsor exemption.
“Starting the week, if you would have said, ‘Hey, in five days you’re going to have a PGA Tour card, or an opportunity for two years,’ I would have looked at you sideways,” he said. “But [the decision to turn pro] is something that it doesn’t just affect me. It affects a lot of people — my coach back there and my teammates — and it’s a conversation I need to have with a lot of people.”
Regardless of whether he rolls with the Tide or the Tour, Dunlap appears to be golf’s next big thing and ought to be good for American Express Platinum status soon enough.

2023 The American Express final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won
The 2023 The American Express final leaderboard is headed by winner Jon Rahm , who continues his great run with the PGA Tour win at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.
Amid a crowded leaderboard in the final round, Rahm wound up in a showdown with Davis Thompson, who didn't blink in the closing stretch. Rahm was better, though, and he earned the win by a shot on 27-under 261.
Xander Schauffele and Chris Kirk finished in a share of third place on 25-under total.
Rahm won the $1,440,000 winner's share of the $8,000,000 purse.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors
Sportsline's proven model simulated the cj cup byron nelson 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.
The 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson is set to get underway on Thursday, May 2, and several players will enter this week's event confident they can secure the victory. Jason Day is the defending champion and he's coming off a T-18 finish at the RBC Heritage. With another win at TPC Craig Ranch this week, he'll join K.H. Lee (2021-22) as the only golfer to win this event in back-to-back years. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth, a 13-time PGA Tour champion, can add to his impressive resume with a victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024.
Spieth is going off as the 12-1 favorite according to the latest 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds. He's followed by Day (18-1) and Si Woo Kim (22-1) on the PGA odds board. Before making any 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .
Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.
Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament.
Another surprise: Tom Hoge, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.
In order to score well at TPC Craig Ranch, players will need to be extremely accurate with their irons and few do it better than Hoge. In fact, the 34-year-old enters this week's event ranked second in strokes gained: approach to green (1.035). He also ranks sixth in scoring average (69.13), ninth in birdie average (4.58) and 10th in putting average (1.709). Those impressive statistics make Hoge a longshot worth backing this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson. See who else to pick here .
How to make 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
Who will win the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.
