Frequently asked questions

What if the date I want is listed as "Not Available?" This means someone else has reserved the picnic for that day. You have other options:

  • Go to any City or County Park in the region on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some have tables and bbq's.
  • Check out the City of San Jose's other reservable picnic areas by calling (408) 794-7275.
  • Check out Santa Clara County's reservable picnic areas

How many people can this site handle? About 40. There are four large tables, and if you used them for nothing but sitting and eating, we think about 40 folks can sit there. But that might be pushing it. Plus that does not account for using one table to serve from.

Is alcohol allowed? No, but the City and County both have sites that DO allow it, see info above to research other sites.

Are dogs allowed? Yes, but there is a strict on-leash policy. Violator can be fined $100!

Is this a good site for kids? While there's no play structure, there is a large grassy hill that has seen many a child roll down it.

What is the refund policy? Reservations may be changed in writing (date or location) at applicant’s request. The cost for this change will be $20.00 and plus/minus the difference in site rental fees. There are no refunds for inclement weather. Cancellations must be requested in writing and submitted to info @ grpg.org. Refunds will be mailed to address on receipt 2-3 weeks following the date of cancellation or the event date. If paid by credit card, a reversal of the charges can be made minus the cancellation fee. Refunds will be issued for:

A. Cancellations requested more than 30 calendar days prior to reservation date minus a 25% cancellation fee. B. Cancellations requested 30 calendar days or less prior to reservation date minus a 50% cancellation fee.

What do I do with the ashes after my BBQ? Nothing! We will remove them for you. If you bring additional bbq's, which is allowed, then you must dispose of those ashes yourself in a safe manner.

How close can my car get to the picnic site? Pretty close actually. The map above shows the proximity of the parking lot to the site. Some lugging will still be in order though...please do not jump any curbs or open gates to get closer. Any cars found inside the gate will be ticketed.

Can I reserve the site for half the day for half the price? Nope.

Can I bring another grill, tables, chairs, etc? Yep.

Where are the nearest restrooms? See map above. The nearest restrooms are across Taylor Street, which has a robust cross walk with flashing lights.

12 Perfect Places to Picnic in Metro Detroit

Because amid a pandemic, summer 2021 means eating outdoors

Spring has arrived. Grab a basket, or takeout, and enjoy a socially distanced meal in the great outdoors. With restaurants selling groceries and meals to go, it’s a perfect time to enjoy the weather while supporting a local business.

Here are a handful of lovely spots around Detroit where you can enjoy a nice meal outdoors, and restaurants nearby to shop for a perfect picnic.

With 982 acres, this diverse island park in the middle of the Detroit River is arguably the city’s most famous having been designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man behind New York’s Central Park and the U.S. Capitol. There are plenty of picnic tables — and a beach — to choose from. The entry fees of  $12 a year for residents and $9 a day for out-of-state residents are currently waived during the pandemic. After a meal, take a bike ride around the island, or repetitive ups and downs on the giant slide. Unfortunately, the aquarium and the conservatory are temporarily closed due to COVID restrictions, but they make a lovely backdrop for a day in the sun.

What to eat: Fill up on gas and food items at the same time. Detroit Chill and Grill , tucked inside the Sunoco gas station, has delicious burgers, Philly cheesesteaks, and pitas. The rice bowls include a dizzying number of options that include lamb, fried or jerk chicken, and tabbouleh. The Belle Isle rice bowl comes with grilled onions, green peppers, tomatoes, pineapples, corn, spring mix, and sweet teriyaki sauce.

Detroit Riverfront

The riverfront offers many beautiful locations along its 5 1⁄2 miles to watch the river flow by, admire Canada, and enjoy your meal. Benches facing the river are spread out throughout the riverfront, as well as numerous parks and many grassy locations along the stretch from the Ambassador Bridge to Gabriel Richard Park. There’s also a sandy beach, a children’s musical garden, and a community barbecue pavilion. To rent a picnic shelter, visit the Michigan DNR website or call 1-800-44-PARKS.

What to eat: At Atwater Beach, inside Valade Park, Smokey G’s serves barbecue ribs, pulled pork, and brisket sandwiches, along with turkey legs and chicken. All of the meats are slow-smoked over embers of fruitwood. Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Pair any of the meats with baked beans, Brussels sprouts, or mac and cheese to round out the meal.

The Greening of Detroit - Lafayette Greens

Right outside the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel and nestled in the middle of the downtown landscape, Lafayette Greens is an urban garden and public green space. The Greening of Detroit grows organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers here, creating an environment where visitors are surrounded by vibrant and lush nature pollinated by bees and butterflies. The park also holds educational sessions, tastings, and a farmers’ market.

What to eat: Grab a classic coney from Lafayette Coney Island or American Coney Island , soul food from Savannah Blue , a chicken sandwich or savory crepe from the Hudson Cafe , and a bottle of red from House of Pure Vin .

A man sits on a bench, facing a garden with several brown brick buildings in the far background

Campus Martius Park

Campus Martius is one of the nation’s best public squares. The downtown centerpiece is a perfect place for gazing at the skyscrapers, and people-watching around the fountain. The ice rink disappears after the winter to make room for dog-friendly yoga classes; movies on the lawn; and a pop-up beach, complete with sand, volleyball, and shovels for the little ones.  The large monument commemorating the end of the Civil War shouldn’t be missed.

What to eat: The Downtown Detroit Partnership has brought back food trucks that will serve barbecue, seafood, and soul food classics in adjacent Cadillac Square. Visitors can also grab a bite at nearby restaurants such as Parc , Shake Shack , Calexico , Roasting Plant , or Central Kitchen + Bar

One of the museum's most popular offerings, the program has featured legends such as Wayne Shorter, John Clayton, Kenny Burrell, Les McCann, Billy Childs, Arturo Sandoval, Cannonball-Coltrane Project, Ernie Watts and many more.

During the season (May through October), Jazz at LACMA takes place at 6pm every Friday at the Smidt Welcome Plaza, near Chris Burden's iconic Urban Light . Pan Pacific Park

Centrally located across the street from The Grove, Pan Pacific Park is one of the most popular, family-friendly parks in the city. The park is located on the site of the landmark Pan-Pacific Auditorium, which opened in 1935. Before its destruction in a 1989 fire, the venue hosted everything from political events to the Harlem Globetrotters and Elvis.

Today, a recreation center sits on the former Pan-Pacific Auditorium location, and behind it is a public swimming pool. Picnic tables and barbecue pits are located throughout the 28-acre park, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A paved path winds through the length of the park, perfect for those seeking a leisurely stroll or a gentle bike ride. For more vigorous exercise, the park features baseball diamonds, basketball courts and indoor-outdoor gyms. Kids will love the play areas in Renée’s Place, located near the north entrance.

The 134,000-square-foot design features a natural ravine and a tree-lined walkway that leads visitors through a beautiful landscape. Irwin's statement, "Always changing, never twice the same," is carved into the plaza floor, reminding visitors of the ever-changing nature of this living work of art.

Buy a box lunch or bring your own picnic to enjoy on the lawn adjacent to the Central Garden, or at any of the Getty Center's public seating areas. Picnic tables and lawns for lounging are located at the Lower Tram Station.

Will Rogers State Historic Park

Will Rogers State Historic Park

Will Rogers was one of the world’s best-known celebrities in the 1920s and 30s - a multi-talented cowboy, vaudeville performer, humorist and movie star. Rogers bought land in Santa Monica and eventually acquired 186 acres in what is now the Pacific Palisades. Rogers relaxed with his family and friends at his ranch, pursuing his favorite pastimes of riding and roping. After his widow Betty died in 1944, the ranch became Will Rogers State Historic Park . Free tours of the historic ranch house are available Thursday to Sunday.

The Will Rogers Polo Club plays matches every weekend from May to mid-October on L.A. County’s only outdoor polo field, which Trekkies will recognize as a stand-in for Golden Gate Park in Star Trek IV . Riding lessons are offered every day except Monday, and equestrians are invited to bring their horses to the park for day-use.

Available on a first come, first served basis, the picnic area above the polo field provides picnic tables and barbecue grills. Modest picnicking (no chairs, tables, catering, jumpers, etc.) is also permitted on the front lawn of the ranch house. For groups (25+) call 818.880.0398 or email [email protected] .

Three gazebos, which can be reserved in advance for two-hour periods, are also favorite spots for birthday parties, anniversaries and family reunions. Other park attractions include children’s play areas, the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden, City Historical Museum, 9-hole disc golf course, and the Polliwog Park Dog Run.

Bespoke Picnic at South Coast Botanic Garden

South Coast Botanic Garden

The 87-acre South Coast Botanic Garden offers a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience. Located in the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the garden is renowned as one of the world’s first botanical gardens to be developed over a sanitary landfill. The reclamation project began in April 1961 with the planting of 40,000 donated trees. Today, the garden's collection of more than 200,000 plants attracts visitors from around the world.

Picnics and outside food and beverage are welcome at the Garden, though set ups must remain casual - no furniture, tents or staked umbrellas. Restrictions on outside food may be limited during special events and/or exhibitions such as GLOW.

History and Origins of Picnicking

Picnics have a rich history and have been enjoyed for centuries. They originated from sumptuous outdoor feasts of the wealthy and have evolved over time. The tradition of picnicking can be traced back to medieval hunting feasts in England and similar outdoor feasts in other cultures. The word “picnic” itself has French origins and has transitioned from its original meaning of “potluck” to “eating outside.”

During the Middle Ages, picnics were grand feasts held outdoors, often in lush gardens or parks, where the nobility and upper class would gather to celebrate special occasions. These outdoor feasts were a symbol of wealth, leisure, and celebration. They were elaborate affairs, with lavish spreads of food and entertainment, including music, dancing, and games.

It wasn’t until the 18th century that picnics became popular among the middle class. The Industrial Revolution brought about changes in society, including more leisure time and opportunities for outdoor recreation. People began to appreciate the simple joys of dining al fresco and enjoying nature . Picnics became a way for families and friends to escape the constraints of city life and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and natural setting.

Today, picnics continue to be a beloved pastime around the world. The tradition has been embraced by various cultures, each adding their own unique touch. Whether it’s a casual afternoon picnic in the park or a formal outdoor gathering, picnics provide an opportunity to connect with nature, savor delicious food, and create cherished memories with loved ones.

Choosing the Perfect Picnic Location

When planning a picnic, one of the most important factors to consider is the location. The right setting can make all the difference in creating an enjoyable and memorable experience. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect picnic spot:

  • Scenic Views: Look for locations with scenic views such as parks with beautiful landscapes, beaches with ocean vistas, or lakesides with tranquil waters. These picturesque backdrops will enhance the ambiance and provide a stunning backdrop for your picnic.
  • Outdoor Ambiance: Consider the ambiance of the outdoor space. Look for spots with plenty of shade , like under a large tree or a shady gazebo. If you prefer a more open area, choose a location with a gentle breeze to keep you cool and comfortable.
  • Best Picnic Spots : Do some research and find out about the best picnic spots in your area. Local parks, botanical gardens, or even hidden gems off the beaten path can offer a unique and memorable picnic experience.

Whether you prefer the tranquility of a park, the soothing sound of crashing waves at the beach, or the peacefulness of a lakeside setting, choosing the right picnic location sets the stage for a perfect day outdoors. Consider the ambiance, the scenic views , and the overall vibe of the place to create a memorable picnic experience.

Comparison of Picnic Locations

Whether you’re planning a romantic picnic for two or a fun-filled gathering with friends and family, the location you choose will set the stage for a memorable experience. Consider the scenic views , outdoor ambiance , and accessibility when deciding on the perfect picnic spot.

Planning Your Picnic Menu

When it comes to planning a picnic, the menu plays a crucial role in ensuring a memorable experience. Choosing the right foods can enhance the enjoyment and make your picnic a hit. Here are some tips and ideas to help you plan the perfect picnic menu :

Seasonal Delights

One of the keys to a successful picnic menu is incorporating seasonal foods . Not only do they taste better, but they also add freshness and variety to your spread. Take advantage of the vibrant flavors of summer with juicy watermelon slices, refreshing cucumber salads, and colorful summer berry tarts. In the fall, embrace the harvest season with warm apple cider, savory squash dishes, and pumpkin pie. By aligning your menu with the seasons, you’ll be able to enjoy the best that nature has to offer.

Prepared Foods and Picnic Classics

When it comes to picnic food, there’s a perfect balance between homemade delights and convenient prepared foods . Consider packing some classic picnic favorites like sandwiches, wraps, and pasta salads for easy and hassle-free eating. Additionally, be sure to include some homemade goodies such as crispy fried chicken, creamy potato salad, or a refreshing fruit salad. These dishes not only provide comfort and satisfaction but also add a personal touch to your picnic experience.

Refreshing Drinks and Hydration

No picnic is complete without a selection of refreshing drinks to quench your thirst. Pack a variety of options, such as iced tea, lemonade, sparkling water, or even homemade fruit-infused water. These beverages not only keep you hydrated but also add a burst of flavor to your picnic. Don’t forget to bring along some reusable cups and a cooler filled with ice to keep your drinks cool and refreshing throughout the day.

Remember, the key to a successful picnic menu is offering a variety of flavors, textures, and options that cater to different tastes and preferences. By carefully planning your menu and incorporating seasonal delights, prepared foods , and refreshing drinks , you’ll be well on your way to creating a picnic experience that everyone will remember.

Packing and Transporting Picnic Essentials

When it comes to having a perfect picnic, packing and transporting your essentials is key. Here are some helpful tips to ensure that everything you need for a successful picnic is organized and ready to go.

Insulated Bags for Perishable Items

One of the most important picnic essentials is an insulated bag to keep your perishable items cold. This will help maintain their freshness and prevent spoilage. Start by filling the bottom of the bag with frozen water bottles or ice packs, creating a cooling base. Place heavier items on top of the ice packs, as they will stay colder for longer. Pack lighter and delicate items last to avoid crushing or damage.

Consider Using a Wagon or Cart

Transporting your picnic gear from your car to your chosen picnic spot can be challenging, especially if you have a lot to carry. Consider using a wagon or cart with wheels to make transportation easier. This way, you can load up all your essentials in one go and wheel them effortlessly to your picnic location. Look for a wagon or cart with a sturdy design and ample storage space.

Don’t Forget the Blanket and Serving Dishes

A picnic isn’t complete without a comfortable blanket to sit on. Choose a durable and easy-to-clean blanket that fits the number of people attending your picnic. Additionally, pack lightweight and portable serving dishes to make setup and serving a breeze. Opt for reusable cups instead of disposable ones to minimize waste and contribute to a more sustainable picnic experience.

Picnic Essentials Checklist

By packing your picnic essentials efficiently and thoughtfully, you can ensure that everything you need is readily available for a perfect day out. Take the time to organize your items, use insulated bags for perishable foods, consider using a wagon or cart for easy transportation, and don’t forget to bring your blanket and serving dishes . With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable picnic experience.

Creating a Cozy Picnic Atmosphere

When it comes to planning a picnic, the atmosphere plays a crucial role in setting the tone for a memorable experience. Whether you’re going for a romantic date or a fun-filled gathering with friends and family, creating a cozy and inviting ambiance can elevate your picnic to the next level. Here are some tips to help you create the perfect atmosphere for your outdoor dining adventure.

One of the essential elements of a cozy picnic atmosphere is comfortable seating. Bring along picnic blankets , pillows, and lawn chairs to provide ample seating options for your guests. Arrange them in a way that encourages relaxation and comfort, allowing everyone to unwind and enjoy the surroundings.

To add a touch of charm and personality to your picnic area, consider decorating it with simple yet delightful items. Hang string lights, bunting, or lanterns to create a whimsical ambiance as the sun sets. Place potted plants or flowers on tables or around the perimeter to bring life and vibrancy to the space.

Shade is another important factor to consider when creating a cozy picnic atmosphere . While enjoying the open air is wonderful, having a designated shady spot can provide relief from the sun’s rays and create a comfortable environment for your guests. Use umbrellas, colorful parasols, or even a pop-up canopy to provide shade and keep everyone cool and protected.

Organizing Food and Drinks

Efficiently organizing your food and drinks can contribute to a smooth picnic experience. Set up a designated area where guests can easily access the spread and serve themselves. Use trays or small tables to display the food, allowing guests to choose their desired items without hassle.

Consider using food covers or mesh domes to protect your dishes from unwanted pests while still allowing for easy access. Keep cold items in insulated containers or coolers filled with ice to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage. Arrange refreshing drinks in a separate cooler or bucket filled with ice to keep them cool throughout the picnic.

By incorporating these tips into your picnic planning, you can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that will enhance the overall experience. From comfortable seating and charming decorations to providing shade and organizing food and drinks , every detail contributes to a memorable outdoor dining adventure. So grab your picnic basket, gather your loved ones, and enjoy a delightful day in the great outdoors!

How To Have the Perfect Eiffel Tower Picnic in Paris

Picnic in Champ de Mars

While dreaming of your Paris vacation, you’ve probably thought about sipping Champagne at cafes, shopping through French markets, and eating at the most romantic restaurants . But have you considered a picnic in Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower?

Don’t miss out on this unique, laid-back experience. In this article, I’ll share how to picnic at the Eiffel Tower, including what to bring, where to pick up supplies, and the best views.

What is the Champ de Mars?

Champ de Mars

The Champ de Mars is the largest public greenspace in Paris. This massive park sprawls from the Eiffel Tower at the northwest end to École Militaire at the southwest boundary. This park was also the main site for the 1878 World’s Fair and is still a gathering place for people from every corner of the globe.

Today, there are tons of activities and things to do in the park , including pony rides, flower gardens, and walking paths. Champ de Mars is also the go-to place to watch the tower’s nightly twinkling lights. During a visit to Champ de Mars, you can see everything from marriage proposals to outdoor yoga classes.

Best of all, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely picnic with up-close views of the Eiffel Tower.

Visit the Eiffel Tower before or after your picnic

Why should i have a picnic in champ de mars.

Perfect Eiffel Tower Picnic in Paris

Picnicking is a favorite pastime for Parisians. Because most apartments and homes in Paris are small, Parisians love spending lunchtime and weekend afternoons eating and socializing in parks, including the Champ de Mars.

I’ve seen everything from office workers eating quick sandwiches to families hauling out dining chairs and tables for birthday celebrations. Having a picnic is the perfect way to experience a slice of French life, take a break from a busy sightseeing schedule and see the Eiffel Tower from a new angle.

Best seasons for an Eiffel Tower picnic

Best seasons for an Eiffel Tower picnic

Like visiting the Eiffel Tower, a picnic in the Champ de Mars is always a good idea, no matter the season . However, some seasons offer advantages when it comes to picnics.

Once spring arrives, Parisians head outdoors, so expect the Champ de Mars to be filled with locals and visitors.

Despite the crowds, spring is my favorite time for picnicking near the Eiffel Tower. From March to June, the views of the tower are even better, thanks to the fresh green grass, flowers, and cherry blossoms that fill Champ de Mars. Spring weather can be unpredictable in Paris. Days can alternate between rain showers, chilly temperatures, and heat waves. So check the forecast closely before settling on a day for your spring picnic.

Summer weather is more predictable, but the crowds are heavier during peak tourist season. More people in the park means even better people-watching, which can make for a more entertaining picnic.

Fall is also a lovely time for an Eiffel Tower picnic. The weather may call for a coat and scarf, but smaller crowds mean it will be easy to find a spot to spread your picnic blanket.

Sadly, in the winter, some of the grassy lawns of Champ de Mar may be fenced off to prevent people from trampling the grass. However, you should still be able to find a spot to sit at the edges of the park or on a bench.

Best days and times for a Champ de Mars picnic

Eiffel Tower Champ de Mars view for picnic

When does your tummy start to rumble? That’s the best time to spread out for a bite to eat in front of the Eiffel Tower! But a picnic is more about the experience than just feeding yourself, so it makes sense to think about the time of day you’ll arrive.

A lunchtime picnic is an ideal way to break up a day of sightseeing. Many Parisians eat lunch outdoors around 1-2 p.m., so if you arrive around 11 a.m. or noon, you will miss some of the crowds. Champ de Mar is also a popular after-school hangout for teens, so expect to see more young people in the park starting at 4:30 p.m.

My favorite time to picnic at the Eiffel Tower is in the evening. I love arriving just in time for sunset, watching the sky soften and fade into darkness, and seeing the first display of the hourly twinkling lights .

Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday are the most popular times for a Champ de Mar picnic. If you love people-watching as much as I do, weekends are the time to go. But if you want the best selection of spots and views, choose a weekday for your picnic. Parisian children don’t attend school on Wednesday afternoon, so the park is usually filled with families on that day.

What’s a picnic without food? Without some yummy bites, you’re just sitting in the grass. You can go the easy route and pick up a sandwich or crepe from one of the kiosks located right in the Champ de Mar. Many delis and cafes also offer prepacked picnics.

During the late spring and summer, Milagro offers Picnics To Go packages featuring meat, cheese, salad, wine, and dessert. Best of all, Milagro is just a hop, skip, and jump from Champ de Mars, so you won’t need to lug your picnic across the city.

However, I prefer to pack my own picnic by selecting fresh, local specialties. My favorite picnic foods are delicious, easy to eat, and aren’t messy. They’re also not hard to find at most French markets, including several convenient to the Eiffel Tower, just a metro ride or walk away. (More on where to shop for your French picnic supplies below.)

Here’s what I usually pack:

  • A fresh baguette
  • A selection of cheeses such as comté, chèvre (soft goat cheese), and camembert
  • Fruit spreads, such as fig or apricot
  • Seasonal fruits like grapes or strawberries
  • Charcuterie or cured meats, such as prosciutto or salami
  • Meat spreads like a terrine or pâté
  • Bite-sized vegetables, such as grape tomatoes
  • Pastries, such as a slice of opéra cake, tartlets (savory or sweet), and a few macarons

Shopping for Eiffel Tower picnic food at a grocery store

Eiffel Tower picnic food at a grocery store

If you are a foodie like me, shopping for delicious nibbles will be just as fun as the picnic.

For one-stop shopping, head to Le Grande Épicerie . This gourmet grocery shop is part of the famed La Bon Marche department store.

Getting to Champ de Mars from Le Grande Épicerie is easy. Hop on metro line 10 from the Sevres – Babylone station to the La Motte – Picquet Grenelle station. Once at the shop, you will find everything you need for a luxurious picnic. Le Grande Epicerie features a bakery, pastry shop, massive cheese selection, and a wide variety of premade sandwiches and salads.

The downside to Le Grande Épicerie is its price point. For gourmet, you’ll be paying a bit more than you would at your average grocery store. If you’re looking for a thriftier place to picnic shop, I recommend the Carrefour City , located at 42 Avenue de la Motte Picquet. This petite grocery store is next to École Militaire at the southwest end of Champ de Mars.

Carrefour City is well stocked with fresh bread, chilled drinks (including wine,) premade sandwiches, fresh fruits, and paper goods. This market also has a respectable cheese selection so that you can have an authentic Parisian food experience without the heavy price tag.

Shopping for Champ de Mars picnic foods at local shops

Champ de Mars picnic foods at local shops

Parisians adore shopping for food in small, local shops. If you prefer to shop like a local, you have a few options.

First, head to Rue Cler. This famous market street is open from Tuesday to Saturday and is a hit with visitors and locals. Along both sides of the road, you’ll find a wide range of specialty stores, such as cheese shops, bakeries, chocolatiers, and delis.

There’s so much here I love, but these are my favorites you shouldn’t miss:

  • Charcuterie Jeusselin for sliced meats and savory foods
  • A La Mere de Famille for chocolates
  • Le Repaire de Bacchus for wine

Rue Cler is less than a 10-minute walk from Champ de Mars.

Another option for your Eiffel Tower picnic is shopping at an open-air food market.

Like a farmer’s market, Paris’s open-air markets feature vendor stalls selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, prepared foods, and everything else you can imagine.

Each neighborhood has its own market, which pops up two days a week. The closest to the Eiffel Tower is the Grenelle Market, which is open on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. I recommend picking up a roasted chicken and potatoes cooked in the drippings. The Grenelle Market is located on Boulevard de Grenelle, a 10-minute walk from Champ de Mars.

What else to bring for an Eiffel Tower picnic

What else to bring for an Eiffel Tower picnic

Aside from food, you will need a handful of other things for the perfect Eiffel Tower picnic.

Most importantly, you will want a picnic blanket. Of course, you can sit directly in the grass (and you will see many people doing just that.) I don’t personally enjoy soggy pants from sitting on damp ground, so I always pack a thin, lightweight, waterproof blanket that folds down into a pocket-sized pouch. If you don’t want to squeeze a picnic blanket into your luggage, pick up a tablecloth or oversized scarf anywhere in Paris.

Other than a picnic blanket, you will want:

  • Plastic glasses
  • Wine opener
  • Disposable cutlery
  • Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (There is little shade in Champ de Mars.)
  • Reusable shopping bag to pack everything in

The best meal at the Eiffel Tower

Best meal at the Eiffel Tower

After three years of living in Paris, I still think picnicking at Champ de Mars is the best way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon. When I host guests, I always take them for an evening of munching on cheese and baguettes at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

I think a picnic is one of the best meals you can have at the Eiffel Tower, the perfect pick-me-up after a guided climb to the second floor (or an energizer before your climb).

But sometimes you might not feel like a casual meal on the lawn. For something completely — and I do mean completely different — try the Jules Verne Restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower. It’s fancy, luxurious, and definitely not a meal where you’ll be using plastic spoons. Read our guide to the Jules Verne Restaurant for tips on what to expect.

Best Picnic Spots In Manhattan

Wondering where to have the perfect picnic in NYC? Manhattan, New York’s most popular borough, is home to some of the best picnic spots in New York City, such as:

1. Turtle Pond in Central Park

Picnics in Central Park are popular because there are so many options for beautiful spaces. It’s truly one of the best parks in NYC for a picnic.

That being said, the attraction’s most stunning location may just be Turtle Pond, which is also one of the best places to take pictures in Central Park .

Transport yourself to Europe at this romantic Central Park picnic spot, where from the small grassy lawn you have a front-row view of Belvedere Castle and its reflection on a tranquil pond.

The lawn is also adjacent to the larger Great Lawn if you need more space but still want the castle view. Plus, you’re conveniently just steps from food carts as well as a huge bathroom at the Delacorte Theater.

If you’re looking to have a memorable picnic in Central Park in NYC, Turtle Pond is highly recommended!

2. Carl Schurz Park

One of the most underrated NYC picnic spots is Carl Schurz Park.

Located on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, this tranquil and family-friendly park overlooking the East River offers plenty of grassy spots perfect for picnicking.

It’s also home to the lovely Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.

3. Fort Tryon Park

One of the best parks for picnics in NYC is Fort Tryon Park in the Hudson Heights and Inwood neighborhoods in Manhattan.

Located away from the hustle and bustle, this park is a true oasis in New York City, offering serene views of the Hudson River and New Jersey Palisades.

Be sure to visit the medieval-inspired Met Cloisters after lunch.

Fort Tryon Park is the perfect uptown spot for an NYC picnic

4. Four Freedoms State Park

Take the iconic red Roosevelt Island Tram over the East River to Four Freedoms State Park for a unique picnic spot.

This quiet, under-the-radar park on Roosevelt Island has plenty of green space and great views of Manhattan.

5. Governors Island

Take the ferry to Governors Island for a scenic picnic looking out toward the Lower Manhattan skyline.

From Picnic Point, you’ll also be able to take in a front-row view of the Statue of Liberty — which is so close you’ll feel like you can reach out and touch her. Here, you can also reserve a grill for $26 if you’d like to cook up a delicious picnic meal — which is also a fun idea for an NYC birthday party .

Bring a cooler and some picnic games and enjoy the stunning vistas.

Afterward, you can rent bikes to explore this car-free island — or, for some romance in NYC , stay overnight and go glamping under the stars.

6. Sheep Meadow in Central Park

Central Park is one of the best places to picnic in NYC. Along with Turtle Pond (mentioned above), another spot for a picnic in Central Park in New York is Sheep Meadow.

At the southern end of the park, this grassy 15-acre meadow is a picnicker’s paradise and you might even struggle to find a spot to put your blanket down on a nice summer day.

If you’re looking for a social and fun atmosphere, this NYC picnic spot is a great choice.

Want beautiful photos taken of you in scenic New York spots? Book one of our Private Photo Journeys , a walking tour that includes photos of your group to keep. Or for even more photos opt for a Professional NYC Photoshoot . Email [email protected] with inquiries.

7. Madison Square Park

Looking to have a picnic with a more urban vibe?

Although it’s small, Madison Square Park offers slightly more grassy space than other downtown parks like Union Square Park or Washington Square Park, making it a great picnic spot in the heart of Manhattan.

People have the perfect NYC picnic in Madison Square Park in Manhattan

Best Picnic Spots In Brooklyn

Another great place for picnics in NYC is Brooklyn. This New York City borough offers an abundance of green spaces for picnicking, like:

8. Brooklyn Bridge Park

If you’re looking to pair the perfect NYC picnic with the perfect skyline view or some stunning Brooklyn Bridge photos , nothing beats Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Located on the East River, you can put your blanket down on the waterfront lawn to take in a prime vista of the Brooklyn Bridge and One World Trade. If you choose the lawn right off Washington Street in DUMBO, you’ll be sitting in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge for a very interesting perspective and one of the best free views in NYC .

If you don’t feel like packing a picnic basket, you can simply head into Time Out Market — located in the park — and order takeout from one of the dozens of top NYC restaurants inside.

By the way, this is one of the best places to take pictures in NYC , which is also why it’s a popular spot on our NYC photo tours and photoshoots .

9. Long Meadow in Prospect Park

One of the best parks in NYC to have a picnic is Prospect Park. This is Brooklyn’s own version of Central Park, and the 526-acre green space is home to numerous attractions and many great picnic spots.

One of the best is the sprawling and grassy Long Meadow — which holds the title of “longest stretch of unbroken meadow in any US urban park” at almost a mile long.

10. McCarren Park

A beautiful green space easily accessible from the popular Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods of Brooklyn is McCarren Park. This vibrant park is one of the best places in Brooklyn for a picnic.

Make sure to check the park’s event calendar, as they frequently host outdoor movies, open sports sessions, and more.

Additionally, if you enjoy recreational activities, McCarren Park features fields and courts for kickball, soccer, baseball, bocce, handball, basketball, football, and tennis.

11. Coney Island

On a hot summer day, we suggest planning a beach picnic in NYC — preferably in Coney Island, known for its historic amusement park, sandy beaches, and lively boardwalk.

It’s also home to one of the best pizzerias in New York City, Totonno’s Pizzeria Napolitana , which has been serving up made-to-perfection pies since 1924.

After enjoying the sand, make sure to grab a slice and hop on a few rides. If you’re looking for fun NYC activities for couples , Deno’s Wonder Wheel is a must!

12. Marsha P. Johnson State Park

Marsha P. Johnson State Park is a 7-acre waterfront park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. It’s the ideal spot to have a picnic on a sunny afternoon — especially for those who enjoy some history.

In fact, don’t be surprised if you find remnants of the site’s past as a 19th-century shipping dock, like old cobblestone streets and railroad tracks covered in native plants. Historic interpretive signs can help you appreciate the area’s past.

Best Picnic Spots In Queens

Queens has a number of parks with locations that make for the perfect picnic in NYC. Most notably, its waterfront parks offer great views of Manhattan to enjoy while you’re picnicking, some of which include:

13. Gantry Plaza State Park

Offering incredible views of the Manhattan skyline from Queens , Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City is one of NYC’s best picnic spots.

Formerly a dockyard in a manufacturing district, it’s now a family-friendly park perfect for having a picnic while gazing out toward the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.

Gantry Plaza State Park is one of the best picnic spots in NYC thanks to the Manhattan skyline views

14. Socrates Sculpture Park

Socrates Sculpture Park sits right on the East River and is home to large-scale sculptures and multimedia installations.

It also has plenty of green spaces, and picnicking is welcome for visitors.

15. Astoria Park

Astoria Park, located in the shadow of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, is best known for its waterfront views and outdoor swimming pool.

It’s also the perfect spot for picnics on a summer day — especially around the 4th of July when it hosts an annual fireworks show.

Astoria Park is one of the best places to have a picnic in New York City thanks to the skyline views from Queens

Best Picnic Spots In The Bronx

While many tourists skip The Bronx (unless they’re visiting Yankee Stadium ), it’s well worth the trip to this New York City borough — especially as it offers some under-the-radar picnic spots. A few to check out include:

16. Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center

Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center is a tranquil oasis in the Riverdale neighborhood of The Bronx.

With beautiful gardens and expansive views over the Hudson River, it offers a scenic designated picnic spot for visitors.

17. Van Cortlandt Park

Spanning more than 1,000 acres in The Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park is a nature-filled sanctuary a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It’s also one of the best places to picnic in NYC, with many walking paths and hiking trails leading to secluded picnic spots.

One of our personal favorites is the 1.5-mile John Muir Trail, which takes you through three ecologically distinct forests. Wandering through lovely tulip, oak, and hickory trees is a great way to work up an appetite for your picnic, too!

Best Picnic Spots In Staten Island

Finally, Staten Island has some hidden gem picnic spots. You can take the free Staten Island Ferry from Downtown Manhattan to reach many tranquil picnic spots, like:

18. Clove Lakes Park

One of the most underrated NYC picnic spots is Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island. This expansive park is home to three lakes, numerous woodlands, and plenty of grassy spots for picnicking on a sunny day — though we suggest the designated picnic area near the stone bridge at Clove Lake.

Fun fact: This park is one of New York City’s “Forever Wild” sites thanks to its valuable ecological assets, including a 300-year-old tulip tree that is definitely worth a visit. It’s believed to be the oldest tree on Staten Island.

19. Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden

These beautiful gardens on Staten Island encourage picnicking on the grounds, and one of the most beautiful spots for a picnic is the Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

This tranquil garden is based on the Ming Dynasty gardens of the 14th through 17th centuries and will make you feel as if you’ve been transported to another time and place.

Tips For An Amazing NYC Picnic

To help you plan the best picnic in New York possible, here are some essential tips:

-Wondering where to picnic in NYC? Go somewhere with local events! You can check out park calendars to see if you can combine your NYC picnic with one of the many free outdoor events going on. Parks like Central Park, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, and Riverside Park are not only some of the best picnic spots in NYC, but they also host free movies, concerts, comedy shows, and more!

-You can also subscribe to local newsletters to keep up with what is going on in NYC, including in local parks. A few top newsletter options include The Skint, Secret NYC, Bucketlisters NYC, and Nonsense NYC. Bonus: If you’re looking for non-touristy things to do in NYC , these can also help with that!

-Elevate your outdoor meal with delicious food sourced from local artisan shops and restaurants. The Picnic Basket NYC is one option near the southern end of Central Park, while Bread N Wine serves up delicious sandwiches, soups, and salads near the northeast end of the park. There are many restaurants offering delicious picnic food in NYC — with some even offering picnic baskets — so do your research.

-Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water. In terms of a blanket, opt for one with a waterproof side in case the ground is damp.

Truly an amazing park. Lucky people who live in this neighborhood to have such a beautiful park in their backyard! I wish we can see more of these parks sprinkle around the bay area. Will def be back! I hope everyone do their part to keep it safe and clean for kids to enjoy.

This park is in Milpitas and it's an amazing park my husband and I love it for our children and they also had fun would come again but parking is smalll sometimes you would have to find parking outside the street

Photo of Sunil R.

This is a fantastic park and the people who live in this neighborhood are lucky. It's pretty big with a big lawn, several tennis walls, basket ball courts, and 3 cool-looking playgrounds. It's not a 5-star rating because it was overrun with people relatively early in the morning. I can only imagine what it's like during peak.

Great park with bathrooms! Great for all ages. The only thing is parking is limited and there's barely any shade so don't go on a super hot sunny day. Otherwise! The structures are cool and unique. There's tons of open space and areas for kids to play in.

Most beautiful kid playground I've ever been to. It's nice, clean, and modern. My daughter played at this playground for hours and she doesn't want to go home. I highly recommend this playground!

Love this new park. It's located right next door to an elementary school so parking can be limited. They have a huge area I'm assuming that will have some sorts of flower/garden beds. A huge picnic area with bbqs and they have an over hang here which is nice. The dog run area is very small though. They have this barn area I believe that you can play around or eat and have a snack too. What i do love is this cute art piece they have and it turns and shows different colors on the ground. Many slides and places to climb. Musical instruments that you can bang. Love that this is an all inclusive park. What's cool also is their interactive game system that they have at both parks. This park also has 2 workout areas which is nice. The two parks are also covered with fences. Pro: new, clean, fun huge, nice clean bathroom. Cons: limited parking lot, or street parking. When it's hot the only shade is under the barn, picnic area or the big red flowers on top of the structure. When making this park I feel like they should take in consideration toddlers and short kids especially in the bathroom. It would have been nice to have toddler size urinals, toilets and sinks. Let's try and keep this park clean because this is such a fun and new park. Me and the kiddos will def be coming back!

Two different play areas and lots of interactive play stations for your kids. They have a barn and dog park too. It's a very unique park in Milpitas and worth a visit. I wish the city had planned a little better in terms of parking . It's hard to get parking over weekends and evening.

Good park... great? no, but good? Yes! This park has a large amount of different things for kids to do and an okay amount of shade. The kids had a ton of fun going up and down the slides, playing on the structure, and going between the different fenced in area and the area near the nearby school. They have a good water station with a water bottle filling station. They also have a dog park, which makes it even nicer! Parking is decent, which makes it also enticing. Strongly suggest bringing a lot of water if it's hot out.

Photo of Kristi G.

I really feel like the electronic features of this park ruin the entire park. There is one on both of the playgrounds. They are excessively loud, and instead of just musical tones like the magical bridge playgrounds have, these electronic games have a booming voice telling kids how to "play a game" but the game keeps changing on its own, revving engine noises, etc. In the hour I've been here, I've seen zero kids actually play the game successfully (on the side with the numbers & white background). It's really just annoying & overstimulating, and disruptive of everyone's attention. Horrible feature should be turned off. Another issue: no shade whatsoever. And parking is a huge issue. There is so much grass and rentable table area, and only one single direction parking lot. There is a huge drop off area the length of the parking lot that that clearly states 5 min loading zone, every single spot was parked in. And because this park (or cluster of parks) is surrounded on all sides by apartments, there is zero street parking anywhere around if you don't get a spot in the lot.

Photo of James L.

Great new amazing park! The park is also very innovative / modern. There is a park for kids and there is a park for big kids. Alot of space for the kids to run around safely. Like that this park has soft padding. There is also several full basketball courts! Lots of things to do at this park!

8 best things to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend

Music, festivals, farm tours and more.

picnic garden tourism park

Looking for something fun to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend? Here are our top picks.

Greek Festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral

For fans of roast lamb and homemade spanakopita and loukoumades, it doesn’t get much better than this annual festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral near Woodley Park, which features three days of food, music and dancing. Greek bands perform at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, while folk dancers, DJs and children’s groups are featured throughout the weekend. There are long lines for gyros and souvlaki cooked over coals (smell them and you’ll understand why), while the “Taverna” serves Greek beer and wine. A bazaar features Byzantine icons, jewelry, CDs and Greek soccer scarves, while a moon bounce and games keep the kids busy. If you’ve never visited St. Sophia’s before, tours are offered on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Free.

Music in the Meadow at the National Arboretum

Bring a picnic to enjoy while watching the concert in the Arboretum’s Ellipse Meadow, featuring local neo-cumbian band Cumbia Heights. This event, supported by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, is pay-what-you-can. Note that ticketing is only for concert access; the grounds won’t be open during the show. Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. $25 recommended ticket price.

Fiesta Asia

The annual Fiesta Asia shuts down Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and Sixth streets NW to showcase more than 20 Asian cultures in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Look for live music and dance performances representing multiple countries, a karaoke stage, a cosplay contest, martial arts demonstrations, hands-on games and crafts for kids, a large vendor area, and a “food alley” featuring local and New York City restaurants that is apparently 50 percent larger than last year’s. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free .

Loudoun Farm Tour

The Loudoun Farm Tour is a way to immerse city slickers — kids and adults alike — in the rural communities on the other side of Dulles Airport. The 38 farms open their doors for more than just talks about farm management or letting kids come face to face with barnyard friends such as pigs, donkeys and llamas. Over two days, taste raw honey straight from an apiary or try a scoop of all-natural ice cream on a dairy farm. Learn how craft beer goes from the field to the bottle or tour farms dedicated to mushrooms, garlic or tea leaves. This year, the tour includes shuttle buses running on loops between farms, leaving from four locations, including the Ashburn Metro station. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free; farms may charge for tours and activities .

Africa on the Avenue at Bruce Monroe Park

Washington’s African heritage and community are celebrated during Africa on the Avenue, held in Park View’s Bruce Monroe Park on Saturday. There’s music from a variety of DJs and artists, including the Ethiopian fusion of the Feedel Band, the Grammy-nominated songs of Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate, and the Farafina Kan drummers and dancers. For families, there’s a foam party, double Dutch, hula hoops and interactive art projects. Vendors will be selling African coffee, head wraps, braiding, clothing, books and pepper sauces. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free .

Bladensburg Waterfront Art Festival

Painting and pontoon boats meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park’s outdoor arts party, which features a market of local artists, hands-on community art projects, demonstrations and activities for kids. Adults can sip beer or wine, and all ages can enjoy live music and free boat tours on the Anacostia River. Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Free .

Lincoln Strawberry Festival

Supermarket strawberries have nothing on a freshly picked red berry, which you’ll find in abundance at the inaugural Lincoln Strawberry Festival in Loudoun County. This two-day fundraiser from Wegmeyer Farms begins Saturday morning with a strawberry pancake smorgasbord (buy a separate breakfast ticket in advance) and continues with musical performances, a strawberry baby fashion show, tractor rides, and eating competitions for strawberry pie and strawberry ice cream. Sunday’s schedule is similar, swapping in 4-H animal presentations in the morning instead of pancakes. Each day, you’ll be able to pick your own strawberries for purchase while supplies last. Proceeds benefit a variety of local causes. Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. $15; free for kids age 2 and under .

The Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf

The Wharf’s quirky combination of the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo is back for the 12th year on Sunday, after rain on May 4 postponed the original event. The annual Running of the Chihuahuas involves more than 100 of these tiny dogs sprinting in groups of eight on a 60-foot “racetrack.” One Chihuahua eventually emerges as the fastest of the pack, winning $100 cash and swag during this bracket-style tournament. Only Chihuahuas can race, but dogs of all types can enter an all-breed dog costume contest, while human spectators enjoy the Pacifico Beer Garden, a DJ, a pet photo booth and an adoptable-dog parade. This event is very popular: Arrive early for the best views of the track, or watch on a giant video projection screen. Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Free admission. All spots for racing Chihuahuas are filled.
