The pair chatted about their joint tour in a Monday appearance on The View after a jubilant performance of Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.”

“We were here five years ago to announce our Broadway Christmas special, which was exciting for us. We’re getting old, Ruben, we are about to celebrate our 20th anniversary from the year we were on Idol , and so Ruben and I are are hitting the road together with a 20th anniversary tour all across the country through the year,” Aiken told The View ‘s hosts. “We’re starting out this spring and we’re going to be celebrating the last 20 years since we did Idol and the music we’ve gotten to make and the friendships we made along the way.”

During the pair’s appearance on The View , they also revealed that they will be returning to American Idol in the upcoming season for the finale, as the finale date will coincide with their season two finale episode’s.

The second season of American Idol aired from January to May of 2003. Studdard faced off against Aiken in the finals, and ultimately won. Following the show, the pair remained close, which Aiken discussed in a Dec. 3 Instagram post .

“We don’t get to choose our family. Most family is predetermined by blood; some are predestined by God to come into our lives. I’ve got one brother who was born into my family and one brother who the good Lord introduced me to in 2003,” he wrote.

Now, two decades later, they’re still here.

Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken bring pitch-perfect voices, boy band moves to Newark, Ohio

ruben studdard and clay aiken on tour

Timeless songs. Big personalities. Show-stopping performances.

Those were some of the elements that made “American Idol” must-see TV in its heyday 20 years ago. You really had to be there to truly understand, but Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken’s concert Tuesday night in Newark captured some of that magic.

Season-two winner Studdard and runner-up Aiken brought “Twenty: The Tour” to the Midland Theatre, where they told stories, delivered comedy bits and performed numbers that made them household names during their “Idol” era. The reception from the packed venue was warm; most of the audience appeared to be people who contributed to the pool of about 124 millionvotes cast for the men in 2003—though the family-friendly show would be appealing to anyone who appreciates powerful singers and classic R&B and pop.

More: Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken talk 'American Idol' memories and music ahead of Newark show

Backed by a solid live band, Studdard appeared onstage first, singing his signature cover of “Superstar,” made popular by Luther Vandross. Then, the literal spotlight was on Aiken, who sang Journey’s “Open Arms.”

Then, both performers—wearing matching shiny jackets resembling a grandmother’s couch, Aiken joked—joined together for a cover of Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” (Do yourself a favor and Google Aiken’s rendition with an impersonator on the season-five finale of “American Idol.”)

After some funny banter, Studdard and Aiken launched into their own version of “Motown Week” on “American Idol,” singing classics by the Temptations, the Four Tops, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and others. When one sang lead, the other sang backup, along with another backing vocalist, while performing some famous Motown dance moves.

During one standout segment of the show, Studdard and Aiken used quick costume changes to launch into different songs. Studdard donned a curly wig to perform Rick James' “Give it to Me Baby,” and Aiken pulled on a glittery purple jacket to sing Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

When the guys changed into jean jackets, they tore through songs by New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. Aiken actually did the signature dances during “You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and “Bye Bye Bye.”

Following a 15-minute intermission, Aiken appeared onstage by himself and offered the first line of a classic Lionel Richie song: “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”

The audiences shouted a resounding “Yes!”

Studdard appeared and playfully scolded Aiken for trying to steal the show.

Spring fun: Big names, festivals and events coming to Columbus area

Aiken arguably has the stronger fan base; after all, they gave themselves the name “Claymates” two decades ago. It’s easy to see why: he is a powerhouse singer, and his voice is still clear as a bell. While he offered stunning renditions of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody" and Simon & Garfunkel's “Bridge over Troubled Water”—which earned him a standing ovation—it was his cover of “Unchained Melody,” made popular by the Righteous Brothers, that especially demonstrated his vocal control, range and knack for knowing how to let a song simmer and build to a climax.

But Studdard is no slouch. For the first half of the concert, he showed off the buttery tone that earned him the “velvet teddy bear” nickname from Gladys Knight. During the second half, he really came alive, presenting a dynamic belting voice on “Too Much Heaven” by the Bee Gees, "Kiss and Say Goodbye” by the Manhattans and his own hit song, “Flying Without Wings.” He also impressed during a Luther Vandross set and a beautiful, haunting cover of the Broadway classic “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)" with Aiken.

Though a part of me secretly hoped to hear a bit of Studdard’s “Sorry 2004”—simply for the sake of nostalgia—the two performers put on a flawless show, which could work extremely well as a Vegas residency in the future. Aiken admitted that the opportunity to perform again with Studdard—the two did a Broadway show in 2018—brought him out of a break from performing. Aiken not sharing his gift is criminal, so I’m imploring the powers that be to keep creating opportunities for the duo to perform.

I and the millions of other “American Idol” voters can’t be wrong, and we will show up, which Aiken and Studdard acknowledged from the stage on Tuesday night.

“You put us here,” Aiken said. “You picked up the phone.”

Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard still share a bond like no other

38 million watched their ‘american idol’ showdown in 2003. now on a nostalgic concert tour, the two men reflect on the lasting prize of friendship..

ruben studdard and clay aiken on tour

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Think about the bond you share with a friend that you have known for two decades, and now imagine that you met when you were both 24, on a TV show that made each of you head-spinningly famous. There were record deals. Magazines with your faces on the cover. The tabloids tried to figure out who you were sleeping with. Ecstatic fans crashed your tables at restaurants. Through it all, a rude British man got paid to insult you.

It was 2003 — very specifically 2003, the year that Fox’s “American Idol” skyrocketed into ubiquity in its second season. Millions of viewers gathered on Tuesday and Wednesday nights to watch the singing competition, vote for their favorites and gasp at stinging comments from the “mean” judge, British record executive Simon Cowell. And everyone started to realize that this new phenomenon called “reality TV” could really turn regular people into stars and would give us a whole new class of celebrities to obsessively follow.

May 21, 2003: It all came down to Ruben Studdard vs. Clay Aiken. Some 124 million votes were cast and a whopping 38 million viewers tuned in, one of the highest-rated TV broadcasts that year and the most-watched live regularly scheduled TV episode of this century so far (excluding sports). Studdard won, and Aiken was named runner-up, and the two men became inextricably linked — and friends, forever.

“We like to round it up to 40 [million viewers], please,” Aiken joked, maybe only half kidding.

Aiken stopped touring a decade ago, but last spring, Studdard noted that the 20-year anniversary of their famed “Idol” season was on the horizon and hinted about a possible reunion for the milestone. “I know you’ll be in Congress next year,” Studdard told Aiken, who was in the throes of his second bid in eight years for a North Carolina congressional seat. (“He was being nice and optimistic,” Aiken said.)

The Style section

Aiken lost the Democratic primary and decided he was sick of the political arena : “I’m done with all of this for the rest of my life,” he said. “I don’t like any of them, honestly, on either side.”

Studdard told him, “You’ll make more people happy singing than you will in politics, anyway.”

Aiken was sold, leading to Twenty, a 70-plus date concert trek across the United States and Canada that kicked off in April and continues through January and beyond. The set list is entirely cover songs, many of which they performed on “Idol,” and it makes people very, very happy as they are emotionally transported to what they remember as a simpler time, when everyone watched the same thing on TV and the internet was limited to the dial-up modem on the “family computer.”

The tour has pulled into North Little Rock on a warm October afternoon at the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College. Aiken and Studdard are dressed as casually as possible without actually wearing pajamas, several hours before they take the stage. Though they have separate busy lives — Aiken lives in Raleigh, N.C., with his teen son; Studdard is based in Birmingham, Ala., with his wife and preschool-age son — they have remained close friends all these years. And as other “Idol” stars fade from memory, America has never forgotten Clay and Ruben.

They refer to each other as brothers, and when they unite for these types of events, they are one entity. The merchandise involves both of them: One shirt reads “John & Paul & George & Ringo & Ruben&Clay.” The media played up their rivalry in 2003; even though it was a competition, they didn’t really feel like competitors. Their fans, especially the “Claymates,” bickered about Studdard’s small margin of victory in the finale and claimed conspiracies. The actual Ruben and Clay were never at odds.

“We occasionally will see somebody in the audience with an old Ruben shirt, like a lady last night, ... and I joked with her,” Aiken said. “But I don’t even like it when we do a meet-and-greet and someone says, ‘I voted for you,’ when [Ruben] is in the room. It p---es me off! And if someone says that to him, then you better be p---ed, too.”

“It doesn’t make me mad,” Studdard countered. “Because we wouldn’t be here if somebody hadn’t voted for him, and vice versa, so he needs to calm down.”

“Okay, I don’t get upset when they say they voted for me. But there have been, once or twice, a few who have said it in a way that was not as empathetic. And I don’t like that at all,” Aiken protested as Studdard looks amused, as if he’s heard this all before. “We are in this together.”

I t’s like eavesdropping on a conversation that has been going on for 20 years. As they sat down for a scheduled hour-long interview, Aiken and Studdard bounced rapid-fire from topic to topic, cackling about old “Idol” memories, the minutiae of which they fear would bore anyone else. They get wistful expressions when they talk about a recent concert at which the venue had food delivered backstage from Buca di Beppo, the Italian chain where they used to get weekly cast dinners on “Idol.” Studdard had not thought about Buca di Beppo in 20 years.

“The most fulfilling part [of this tour] is having all these nostalgic moments, like the memories. I’m not sitting at home regularly thinking about the stuff that I did when I was on ‘American Idol,’” Studdard said. “It’s like ... I’ve forgotten most things about high school, until I’m around people that went to high school with me.”

It reminds Aiken of the adage about how you can’t make old friends. “There are not many people who will always know what Ruben was like when he was 24, or what I was like when I was 24,” he said. Nearing his 45th birthday, Aiken sees real value in what he and Studdard, who turned 45 earlier this year, still have.

The back-and-forth continues until about the 58-minute mark. “I don’t think we’ve let you ask a single question, have we?” Aiken said. “That’s what I learned when I was in politics: Filibuster, then they can’t ask you the tough s---. What do you think about the new speaker, Ruben? I’m kidding.”

Eight minutes later, after which they don’t discuss just-elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) but do mention temporary speaker Patrick T. McHenry’s (R-N.C.) bow tie and then wind up debating how to handle drunk fans who yell song requests, finally, a question: What was it like going from an everyday person to becoming a celebrity and having everyone care about everything you do?

Studdard said the hardest part in the beginning was people interrupting meals out with his family. “Meanwhile, my grandma is loving this,” he said, because she was bursting with pride. Aiken remembered a few months after “Idol,” in Los Angeles, he wound up at the same Melrose restaurant as Glenn Close. No one bothered Close, but he was bombarded by photo requests.

“They thought they could pull up a chair to our dinner table, and they did pull up chairs to our dinner tables,” Aiken said. “Because they did put us there. They had a hand in it. And they felt like they knew us, because we had told our stories on ‘Idol.’”

Allowing audience members to vote was one reason “Idol” caught on in the United States, adapted from the British hit “Pop Idol,” where Cowell starred. The American version imported Cowell and added hitmaker-producer Randy Jackson and legendary singer-dancer Paula Abdul as his fellow judges. The first season was a success in the summer of 2002, and as winner Kelly Clarkson set off on soon-to-be superstardom , producers raced to find similarly captivating contestants.

Viewers tuned in for the classic terrible auditions and Cowell’s brutally honest commentary, but many fans loved front-runners Aiken and Studdard from the start. Aiken, in school studying special education, sang Heatwave’s “Always and Forever” at his first audition while wearing glasses and puka shells, and shocked the judges with his soaring vocals. “You don’t look like a pop star, but you’ve got a great voice,” Cowell said, a conundrum that Jackson pronounced “weird.”

Studdard, a former college football player who majored in music education, arrived in a yellow baseball hat and delivered a stunning rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky.” The judges loved him. Aiken and Studdard were sent through to the Hollywood round and started to bond as the field narrowed.

“That was such a great season, Season 2, and the best part is that two completely separate and distinct artists became the most unlikely duo,” Abdul said in a recent interview. “It’s almost like ‘The Odd Couple’ in the best way possible. Just major talent.”

The growing friendship between the bookish student and the jock endeared viewers, but Aiken and Studdard also came from similar backgrounds, growing up in the South and singing in church. Their makeovers throughout the season — Aiken got highlights, Studdard got a new selection of suits — were a major talking point.

“They were like the Cinderella story,” said Megan Michaels Wolflick, an “Idol” associate producer on Season 2 who is now the showrunner. (The show, set to kick off its 22nd season next year, moved from Fox to ABC in 2018.) “They were both kind of these guys next door who were accessible.”

The second season was an unusual time for “Idol.” No one really grasped its popularity yet, and the behind-the-scenes was more casual. The show was incredibly strict on the rules and fairness of the competition, but off the set, all the finalists lived together in a mansion. Some producers stayed there as well. (“There were a few affairs between our contestants and people who worked on the show,” Aiken said, adding that one staffer was his first boyfriend.) They would all have dinner at P.F. Chang’s not far from the studio in Television City. Living arrangements changed in later years and firmer boundaries were put in place, but back then, they quickly became a family.

“I think one of the reasons we became not only friends with each other, but friends with everyone in our group, is because we had no idea what we were getting into,” Aiken said. “In subsequent seasons, I happen to know for a fact ... the winner and runner-up had not spoken since their season ended. And we were both like, ‘What?’”

It’s hard for them to imagine going through such a transformative time and not relying on the only other person in the world who understands what it’s like. Wolflick said producers referred to that time on the show as “the ‘Idol’ bubble,” and contestants were often in for a shock once they stepped off the set and found there was enormous interest in their lives.

“But that’s what makes them kind of relatable to America,” Wolflick said, as viewers saw the challenges as they adapted to fame but stayed down to earth. “They knew who they were and they felt confident in it.”

A fter the 2003 finale, they toured regularly — mostly separately, though together in 2010. They each sold millions of albums and appeared on TV shows and on Broadway. Studdard was nominated for a Grammy. Aiken ran for Congress. They returned to reality TV: Studdard was the first celebrity to appear on the weight-loss competition series “The Biggest Loser,” in 2013 (he didn’t win the show, but he lost 119 pounds), and Aiken was again the runner-up, this time on “The Celebrity Apprentice” in 2012, losing to Arsenio Hall.

“American Idol,” meanwhile, is not the ratings powerhouse it once was. Aiken admitted that he’s frustrated when viewers don’t appreciate that winning or being the runner-up used to be “a huge deal.” Its winners, who must navigate a profoundly altered music industry, find that instant fame is more elusive than it used to be. What remains strong is the show’s legacy and the memories shared by viewers.

“To this day, when we’re auditioning people, every day, I’m hearing singers who are like, ‘I grew up with the show,’ ‘I watched with my grandma,’ ‘My mom auditioned,’” Wolflick said. “It’s a happy memory, and like this kind of simpler time. It’s like a warm blanket, Clay and Ruben: It’s cozy and it feels safe.”

Aiken and Studdard wanted the 20-year tour to lean heavily into that sense of time travel. The songs that play over the loudspeaker before the concert are exclusively ones released around 2003, such as Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter” and John Mayer’s “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” (“We did have to get rid of quite a bit of R. Kelly, because he was very big then,” Aiken said.)

The 2½-hour concert opened with the “Idol” theme music, and as Aiken and Studdard glided onstage dressed in sparkly jackets, they belted out hits they performed to become part of the Top 12: “Superstar,” “Open Arms,” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” They sang a Motown medley, a boy-band medley, and a medley of songs by “Idol” guest mentors, such as Gladys Knight, who famously nicknamed Studdard the “Velvet Teddy Bear.”

Between it all, they told “Idol” stories and poked fun at each other: Aiken noted that Studdard spent the previous day visiting the William J. Clinton Library and Museum, so that was all he was going to talk about for the next two weeks. Studdard told Aiken that he was interrupting him too much. Aiken made self-deprecating digs about his second-place finish and cracked his knee into the microphone to prove how they had aged, and joked about how overworked they were on “Idol” when they spent hours filming Ford car commercials: “They exploited the crap out of us back then.”

Ashlee Wilson, 35, of Little Rock attended the VIP meet-and-greet earlier in the day, where Aiken and Studdard answered questions and posed for photos. When she was a teenager, she used to hang out in an online chatroom of Aiken fans and stayed in touch with one woman from New Zealand who recently sent her $300 to buy a VIP ticket to the Little Rock show.

Despite her fandom, Wilson had never seen Aiken in concert. “I went to college and I just kind of got on with life. It gets away from you,” she said. “But then, before you know it, they’re doing a tour 20 years later.”

T he early 2000s were a weird time to become famous — before social media chaos, but back when gossip blogs didn’t think twice about shamelessly speculating about anyone’s personal life. Writers were casually cruel about Studdard’s weight. Aiken was bombarded with questions about his sexuality until he came out in 2008 on a People magazine cover , posing with his baby son, conceived by in vitro fertilization with his close friend, music producer Jaymes Foster.

Because so many people treated Aiken terribly at the time (he said he lost about half his fan base), he will always remember those who were kind — including Studdard, in whom he confided early on.

“He kept a secret better than anyone,” Aiken said. As he continued talking about the treatment he faced, he caught Studdard’s glance. “You wouldn’t know anything at all about being discriminated against,” Aiken deadpanned. “Let me enlighten you.”

“Please bring me in, what it feels like to be marginalized,” Studdard shot back, and they both laughed.

That’s just what it’s like in these kinds of friendships: You just get each other. After Aiken lost his second congressional run and decided his political aspirations were over, Studdard was the only person who could have coaxed him to go on tour again so quickly.

“It’s very hard to find people onstage you have chemistry with. ... It’s magic when we go out onstage,” Studdard said. Plus, he said, after he supported Aiken at his campaign events, Aiken will owe him his support when Studdard, say, runs for governor of Alabama in 20 years.

Aiken agreed. No matter what happens, and wherever the future takes them, he will be there.

Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken

On May 21, 2003, 38.1 million viewers watched Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken battle it out to become the winner of season two of “ American Idol .” When Ryan Seacrest opened the envelope, he proclaimed, “After 24 million votes, the winner of ‘American Idol’ 2003 is… Ruben Studdard!” Aiken was not surprised — he saw the name on the card before Seacrest read it out loud.

Studdard and Aiken went on to have successful careers, starting with their debut albums, which both topped the Billboard album chart.

And Clay, what’s your side of the story? Aiken : That’s the story. I just always tell people he wanted some pointers from me on how to talk to all the ladies. He doesn’t enjoy my version.

Back then, your fan bases were at odds with each other. What is it like today? Aiken : Completely different, I think. Studdard: I think people finally recognized that we weren’t just putting it on and we really don’t care that they’re mad at each other. Aiken : The ones who have been loyal to him from day one and have followed him for 20 years and the ones who were loyal to me from day one and then followed me, they know better. The folks who are loyal understand that and we don’t play up the competition between us. When we did the Broadway show, we opened it with this fake competition as a joke. At the very end of this show, just in the very last note, we kind of pretend that we’re competing against each other and as I was doing it last night, I thought, “I wonder if people even get this anymore? Do they understand?” It’s so natural that we’re together. Studdard: My real brother and I competed with everything. So to me, it brings out the brotherly spirit because that’s the type of thing that I did with my actual brother. If we’re going to fight, we’re going to fight. If we’re going to play video games, we’re going to play video. We just happen to sing, so we’re going to give it our best every night and that’s what we do. Aiken : I don’t see a bit of that animosity between people coming to the show anymore.

Who came up with the idea to do the 20th anniversary tour? Studdard: I would say that… Aiken : Before you say anything, real quick, I would not want to suggest that Ruben called me out of the blue, because we stay in touch. Ruben helped me with my [congressional] campaign less than a year ago. He was in Durham helping me. So we constantly stay in touch. Studdard: We both knew that it was our 20th anniversary coming up. Even if we didn’t do a tour, we would’ve had to do something. But I enjoy being on the road. He does not. So I thought it would be cool to go out and give the people who put us where we are an opportunity to see us. Are we as physically limber? It’s so funny because I was big as hell when we were on the road the first time and those dance moves felt like I was gliding onstage and now I’m way smaller and my joints hurt. Aiken : We do a medley of songs that were performed or written by the mentors that we had on the show. Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” is in there and we do some jumping jacks and then at the end of the song, we joke “Okay, I’m going to need a rest,” but it’s totally true that after the jumping jacks and how high one of Diane Warren’s song is, I’m out of breath. We stand there for a good 45 seconds saying, “Okay, Ruben, you go.” “You go Clay. You go.”

Wait until the 40th anniversary tour. Aiken : The 40th is going to have to be me sitting still if you want me to do it.

What is it like spending lots of time together again? Studdard: Just like it always is. Like you would with any other family member. We are great and then we get on each other’s nerves. Aiken : Sometimes after a show, we’ll say, “See you tomorrow afternoon.” He gets on his bus. I go on mine. It’s a fun show, but it’s also really easy to work together. Maybe not always, but it’s easy onstage. We trust each other. I went crazy a few nights ago and all of a sudden jumped off the stage and ran into the audience, which I won’t ever do again. When I got there and I was essentially stuck because I couldn’t figure out how to get back onstage, I thought, “Ruben will take care of it.”

How does this tour compare to your “Timeless” tour in 2010? Aiken : “Timeless” was a great show in its structure and we went through the decades, but there’s much more looseness in this show. Ruben will think of a story that he has not told me before and he’ll just tell it right in the middle of the show and we have that freedom to do that, so I think that’s made it even more fun for me and I think probably for you too. Studdard: I think it’s cool that the fans kind of give us leeway to tell those stories and let us have our pre-singer moments. It’s really cool to explore, because every night I’ll remember something new. So I’ll say, “Do you remember the day we had Fatburger for the first time?” “You know what? I do remember that.” Because we got sick of Koo Koo Roo. Aiken : The fun part is we make each other laugh on stage, which we didn’t have the ability to do in the last two shows. “Timeless” was with so much music, there weren’t as many talking moments. The Broadway show [in 2018] had a lot of talking moments, but it was heavily scripted. This one has opportunities for us to talk but there’s no hard script, so Ruben will come up with something and it will genuinely make me laugh or I’ll do the same and that I think makes it more fun for us. I don’t worry about this show getting boring ever, because if it does, we’ll just tell another stupid story that we didn’t tell last night.

Twenty years ago, you both went from being unknown to being globally known. Did you realize that 20 years later, everybody would know who you are still to this day?

Studdard: I had no expectation of how it would be after the show., Even the next week. We were a part of Kelly Clarkson’s ascent as well, so everything that was happening for her was kind of happening while we were going through the process. So we didn’t have a blueprint as to how things would go for us. We absolutely had no idea that people would even care about this stuff five years after. Aiken : I still claim that that’s what made the show good because Kelly’s season and our season are really the only ones where people auditioned without having any idea what the stakes were, without having any idea of what could happen next. Season 3 and beyond, they knew. They signed up for the show because they saw what was going on with Kelly and with Ruben and myself. People are always surprised by our friendship and I was surprised when we went to the Fox finale [in 2016] that we were really the only two people who actually kept in touch with their finale friend and we were shocked by that. I think that had to do with the fact that neither one of us ever really saw each other as competitors. We didn’t know what was at stake, what was behind the finish line and so we were just there to do our very best not to get sent home that week if possible and I imagine that might’ve been different in later years. Studdard: I remember having a conversation with my [label] at the time. Our deal was structured where my album was supposed to come out first and I remember them asking, “Do you mind if Clay’s album comes out before yours?” And I said, “Is he done? Because I’m clearly not. So yeah, go ahead.” Our goals were not encumbered by our friendship. Like we were both able to have the goals and honestly I think it would have hindered the longevity of the things that we’ve been able to do had we went into the situation absorbing the level of animosity that people wanted us to have. Aiken : I’m not trying to kiss our own butts here, but I think people liked that we were nice people. I cheered for Ruben, he cheered for me and it’s always been real. How many times do you see in the press that this celebrity is feuding with that one? I think it turns folks off.

'Idol' rivals Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken are keeping the magic alive. See them in Phoenix

ruben studdard and clay aiken on tour

It’s been 20 years since Ruben Studdard squeaked by Clay Aiken to win Season 2 of “American Idol.”

That season finale remains the most-watched episode in “Idol” history and the highest-rated regularly scheduled, live, non-sporting television episode of the 21st century with 38.1 million viewers.

It was kind of a big deal.

That’s why Studdard and Aiken are headed to Phoenix with Twenty | The Tour for a show at the Orpheum Theatre to celebrate their anniversary.

Well, that and the fact that they formed more of a friendship than a rivalry on their way to the finals, where Studdard prevailed by a margin of 134,000 votes of the 24 million total.

We caught up with Aiken and Studdard to discuss the tour, the “rivalry” that never was and more.

An icon: How this new bar will honor the spirit of 'what Lost Leaf was' in downtown Phoenix

How it feels to be celebrating 20 years since 'American Idol'

How does it feel to be out there celebrating 20 years since the two of you did ‘’American Idol” together?

Studdard: It feels absolutely amazing to know that I’m 20 years older than I was on “American Idol” (laughs).

Aiken: We do move a little slower (laughs). It’s crazy. Ruben pointed out to me that it was coming up on 20 years about a year or so ago and I don’t think that I had even comprehended what that meant. It sort of feels like it was yesterday to some degree. And to think about just how long 20 years really is, it’s a little mind-blowing and a little bit humbling, too.

We’ve been lucky enough to keep doing this 20 years later and a lot of people have not had that luxury in their careers, so we feel really good about that.

What brings Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken back together

This isn’t the first time you have worked together since the show. What do you think keeps bringing you back together?

Studdard: I honestly think it’s the response from the fans. They really enjoy the nostalgia of it all and the opportunity to see us on stage together.

Aiken: That and it’s easy. And by easy, I mean it's easy because we’ve known each other 20 years. We’ve been close friends for 20 years. We’ve done one other tour together, a Broadway show and now this second tour together. It’s very easy when you work with someone you know and can trust.

There’s certainly comfort in not having to carry the whole burden of a show on your own. But it’s even easier and more fun when you know there’s a natural chemistry.

The idea of a Studdard-Aiken rivalry

You guys are obviously friends. When it came down to just the two of you on “Idol,” though, there had to be a sense of competition. Was there a rivalry?

Studdard: I mean, you know, I think the competitive nature of the show, I only felt during the earliest moments of the show, when we were in those large groups. Once we were in the group of people that made it to the house, so to speak, it took on a family atmosphere.

Aiken: Also, I can say emphatically that very last week of the show, when it was just the two of us, I would argue that was possibly the least competitive any of us had been. At that point, I think we both felt that we had made it to the end. We were gonna be on every episode of the season.

But there were also no stakes to Season 2 in the way I think there were for other seasons. When Fantasia showed up for her audition, she had seen Kelly sell her album very successfully. She had seen our season air to 40 million people in its finale. People who came into Season 3 and 4 and beyond, they knew what “Idol” could do for them and what was at stake if they were successful.

When Ruben and I and all of us on our season auditioned, we didn’t have the benefit of that information. We auditioned for a show that had gotten 9 million viewers the season before. And we all thought this would be a fun thing to do, that we might make some contacts and might get to make an album. And then we might go home.

Do you remember when you met? Did you immediately bond?

Aiken: (laughs uproariously) Ruben and I bonded over, I think, the fact that we were so similar. (Laughs). No, I’m kidding. We’re so different.

But we both had a strong affection for our home states. He was telling me all the people who were from Birmingham. I was telling him all the things that were great about Raleigh. And we just kind of competed back and forth with each other about that and that built a friendship.

But like Ruben’s been saying, there was something about that season. Season 2 is the only season where everybody lived in a house together. We roomed with each other, ate dinner together. Everything was done together. All subsequent seasons, they had hotel rooms or little apartments and lived their own separate lives. We shared everything.

Yes, there's a Season 2 Facebook chat group. And a text group

Have you stayed in touch with other people from that season?

Studdard: We’ve stayed in touch with everybody. We have our own little Facebook chat group and text chat group for everybody from the Top 12.

Aiken: Julie DeMato, who was in our season, she’s already been to this show. Vanessa Olivarez, who was in the Top 12 with us, she’s coming to the Nashville show. They all come when they are able to. And we stay connected pretty regularly. Unfortunately we lost one of our brothers from the show a few years back to a car accident, Rickey Smith. And we all flew to Oklahoma to be together for that funeral with his family. It is a family, that group of 12.  We both know other people from other seasons, obviously, professionally or more, but we have really stayed connected to our core group.

It sounds like you have nothing but good memories of that show.

Studdard: Absolutely. It was one of the fondest times of my life. I liken it to my experience in college, playing football. It was just with music. So it was very memorable. A lot of work but well worth it.

Aiken: I tell people all the time if we could eliminate that little piece of Wednesday where we had to worry about being cut, I would’ve done everything we did on “Idol” and enjoyed it for the rest of my life. I just really had fun with it. It was exhausting, but we had a great time.

Did either of you have a week where you thought for sure you were gonna be cut?

Studdard: I was in the bottom two once, so I had a week where I definitely thought I would be cut.

Aiken: For me, it was every week (laughs). I actually didn’t end up in the bottom two, but every week, I thought I would go home. I was sure.

The show aired at 5 p.m. on the West Coast, so we’d do dress rehearsal in the early afternoon and for the very first time all week, we’d get to see the other people sing their song. And I would sit there and listen to Rickey sing his song. Or Trenyce. Or Kim Locke sing. And I’d think, “Oh my God, (I'm) going home. There’s no way.” We had so many good people on that season.

And we did not realize that people were watching this show. There were 9 million people watching it the season before. And it sort of blew up while we were sequestered in our Idol house. We had no idea that people were watching and certainly didn’t realize that people who were watching it were liking the two of us as much as they did.

I know you said that by the time you made the finals, you felt you’d already won. But Clay, what did you think when Ryan announced that Ruben had won?

Aiken: (laughs) Well, here’s the breaking news that isn’t news anymore. I actually saw the card before he said Ruben’s name. We were standing backstage. So I had seen it. By mistake. Ryan had turned it around and looked at it and I looked over his shoulder and saw.

So I expected it. I knew what was gonna happen. And if you go back and look at the show, I’m staring right at Ruben when he announces the winner because I wanted to see Ruben’s face when he won. And Ruben, I’m sure, is thinking “Why the hell won’t you back up, man?”

What fans can expect from the Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard tour

Tell me about this tour and what fans can expect.

Studdard: It is a wonderful night of great music. And I say that because on the show, in particular, we got an opportunity to sing songs from I think America’s greatest songwriters. So what we’re doing is trying to bring that same energy to our live show.

Aiken: Something about “Idol” for not just us but the audience that watched it 20 years ago was you could turn it on with family and sing along with the songs. I tell people at our stage show every night, I didn’t know who the Bee Gees were until “Idol,” which is a little embarrassing, even to this day. I didn’t know who they were, but I knew their music.

So the music “Idol” brought to audiences in their living rooms every week was stuff that everyone knew, the biggest hits from the biggest songwriters. And we wanted to make sure we recreated that when we did this tour. We’ve tried to make the entire evening a flashback to 2003. The music as you’re walking into the theater and playing during intermission is all the hits from 2003.

And we tell the stories of what it was like on the show. We talk about how we chose the song, about the people we worked with, like Smokey Robinson, or how we got to record with Burt Bacharach. We tell some of those stories from behind the scenes, and we really just try to recreate as much of that magic from that year as we can.

Do each of you have a particular moment in the concert that you most look forward to?

Studdard: I can’t say that I do have a special moment. I enjoy all of it, honestly. And that’s not to say that other people don’t say that all the time, but I really do.

Aiken: When we sat down to put the show together, it was very much an organic situation. Ruben, myself and our music director, John Jackson, we all just kind of sat down and started talking. Ruben would start talking about a memory and I’d say “Oh, I remember this.” And then, we’d say “Oh we should do this song together.”

But at one point in the process, we started talking about music that inspired us growing up and somehow that detoured into boy bands. And we ended up deciding to put together this medley of boy-band songs but it's less about the songs than it is about me trying to dance. Which is never pretty.

Studdard: (Laughs)

Aiken: So I think that maybe is my favorite simply because I’ve just gotten to an age where I know I can own it, that I cannot dance at all, and we just both have a lot of fun with that part of the show.

Your fans were obviously deeply invested in seeing you win. How does that work with them coming together to cheer for both of you on this tour?

Aikens: It comes to blows every night in the audience (laughs).

Studdard: If you had asked us that question when we were on the “American Idol” tour, I would say they probably did have a couple of fights in the parking lot. Now, nobody cares. They really are just coming to have a good time.

Aiken: And they know. They know we’re friends. We play it up a lot. We joke about being competitive with each other. But we don’t feel that way. And our fans recognize that. I know my fans have grown to love Ruben and I think some of his fans like me a little bit too.

TROY, N.Y. — Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken came to the Collar City this week, celebrating 20 years since their debut on “American Idol.”

As the kickoff to the 20th anniversary tour, Aiken and Studdard performed at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Wednesday to a crowd of Capital Region fans.

The duo is thrilled to reunite two decades after captivating audiences during their historic run on the second season of Fox’s American Idol in 2003 – and their enthusiasm is evident in the live show.

Both plucked from the relative obscurity of their hometowns in the South, the unlikely pair quickly became viewer favorites instrumental in helping propel Idol to the top of the Nielsen ratings, nearly tripling the viewership of the previous season, and securing its place as one of the most consequential TV series in American history. More than 38 million viewers tuned in to hear the results of more than 124 million votes cast during their finale, making it the most-watched Idol episode in history and the highest rated regularly scheduled, live, non-sporting television episode of the 21st century.

Today, Aiken and Studdard remain thankful for those fans who voted for them on American Idol 20 years ago – giving them both the opportunity to live their dreams – and they are extra appreciative of the ones still cheering them on now.

Though Studdard officially won the game show and Aiken was the runner-up, they have both earned success, fame and fiercely passionate fanbases over the years. Combined they have recorded 12 albums, sold more than eight million albums worldwide, toured the nation 14 times, starred together on Broadway, won four Billboard Music Awards, an American Music Award, and have been nominated for two Grammys.

Twenty | The Tour highlights the music that made Studdard and Aiken American Idol favorites and household names. From Aiken’s iconic rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to Studdard’s soulful “Flying Without Wings,” audiences around the country are joining America’s favorite odd couple for an unforgettable evening of music and memories, spanning two decades, delivered as only these two can.

In between songs, the stars spend a good portion of their stage time reminiscing and sharing stories about their experience on American Idol – the weekly themes, their competitors and the industry giants they got to work with – while keeping attendees smiling and laughing with their banter.

As Studdard and Aiken head out on this tour together, concertgoers can expect a nostalgic evening of entertainment, along with the opportunity to witness the undeniable talent that makes them true American Idols.

Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s spring concert schedule continues with Little Feat on April 18, The SteelDrivers on April 27 and Martin Sexton & KT Tunstall on April 29, followed by Morgan Wade, Béla Fleck, and The Platters in May.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20 years, you might not have heard of a national talent competition called American Idol , where Ruben and Clay both skyrocketed to fame in 2003 as one of the highest-viewed live broadcasts at almost 40 million viewers !

Troy Music Hall was filled with nothing but love and excitement to see this duo hit the stage again. The band started with a rendition of the idol theme song as the pair made their way to the stage in matching get-ups. “We look exceptional”, Clay noted to Ruben as the crowd hushed to listen. To my pleasant surprise, not only did I get to experience an amazing concert, but I laughed for 95% of the show, too…Aiken and Studdard’s friendship is truly something special.

The duo serenaded the audience with a wide variety of musical genres, starting with their first week genre on Idol: Motown. Ruben and Clay compose a beautiful, seamless sound between shifting from song to song, each of them taking their own turn.

We made our way from Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to the BSB (Backstreet Boys) “As Long As You Love Me” to all the way to Ruben’s original ballad “Flying Without Wings”. And, somehow, they managed to change at LEAST three times throughout the entirety of the show (and you bet your bottom dollar those denim jackets were ON for BSB).

In between songs the two would go on to talk about each of their experiences on American Idol, what it was like to go through the competition, how their friendship started and flourished, and how they got to where they are today.

The two cracked constant jokes on stage between songs, and even went “off script” for a number or two, the singing, clapping, snapping and laughing in the crowd did not end!

Studdard’s riffs were like butter melting on hot toast. Aiken has one of the strongest tones in this industry. Put the two together, and you have a one-of-a-kind show that just makes you feel good inside.

Aiken took time to recognize and thank Studdard for igniting a spark within him to perform again. He admitted it had been close to 10 years since he was on tour (Aiken). This all happened because of a trip Aiken took to see Studdard perform his Luther Vandross set. After seeing Studdard live, he was inspired to get back into singing and performing. The two would both go on to star in Monty Python’s Spamalot together.

So, we all have Luther Vandross to thank for this tour happening!

At the close of the show, the two looked to the audience and sincerely thanked them for allowing their dreams to truly come to life. Ruben said it was his lifelong dream to perform. The love was definitely felt in the audience as several women screamed, “WE LOVE YOU!” 10/10, I would attend this show again.

Masked Singer Shocking Unmasking Leaves Panel Stunned Facing Legendary Icon of Stage and Screen

ruben studdard and clay aiken on tour

Four masks, including one new Wild Card, walk into 'The Masked Singer' to sing classic girl group songs before one of them gets knocked out in a shocking upset that leaves everyone stunned -- how did they fall short of the Group B finals, and who knocked them out?

Finally, we made our way back to Group B to meet the final Wild Card contender on The Masked Singer . Could Seal steal the group away from everyone else?

Returning to battle it out on "Girl Group Night" alongside their newest competitor were this season's only duo, Beets, Gumball, and Miss Cleocatra. After back-to-back double eliminations, there would be only one singer unmasked and revealed tonight -- but it was a reveal so bit, it left the panel speechless, and Ken literally running in circles around the dais.

Kate Flannery Shares Why She Couldn't Say No to The Masked Singer & Dishes on Epic Office Reunion (Exclusive)

The masks took on iconic girl groups like The Pointer Sisters, SWV, En Vogue, and Wilson Phillips, while the latter's Carnie Wilson was joined by Raven-Symoné (both former contestants) to belt out even more girl group classics as on-stage clues.

The panel has already thrown out names like Taraji P. Henson , Steve Martin , and Zac Efron for this group. They're clearing shooting for the stars with their guesses -- but it's safe to say tonight's unmasked icon definitely fits that bill, even as they definitely deserved to keep it on and move on in the competition.

So who got robbed of their chance in the Group B finals, and who did the robbing? Who got upset -- aside from all of us -- and who did the upsetting? Well, there's only one way to find out, isn't there?

Let's jump right in with this week's mask. And don't worry, before we get to the shocking unmasking(s), we're going to make you power through the terrible (and occasionally good) guesses made by our illustrious panel of Robin Thicke , Jenny McCarthy , Ken Jeong and Rita Ora first. We do this because we love ... to torture you.

Along with the panel's guesses, we'll be sharing some internet speculation, too, so if you don't want to be potentially spoiled (because they are very good at this), you may want to skip past the guesses sections.

Drew Barrymore's Night with New Kids on the Block's Jordan Knight Was 'Every Girl's Fantasy'

("Wannabe," Spice GIrls) What a fun way to kick off the show, with Ken and Jenny particularly having fun with Scary Spice's rap lines. Rita and Robin appeared to be trying pretty hard to show off what they can do vocally, but they are also people who still want to maintain and grow their music careers … so we get it. Interestingly, Robin kind of threw in the towel early, while Rita and Jenny just poured they all into it until it was over.

ROUND 1: GROUP B

Miss cleocatra.

("Free Your Mind," En Vogue) Miss Cleocatra is clearly a diva who may be decades past the peak of her popularity, but still has that enduring quality that the real ones never seem to lose. Her voice is showing its age a bit, but still has incredible power and so much character. This was a great song choice for her as she was able to inject so much true passion into it.

Guesses: The love of her mother was the theme of her "Girl Group" package, where she said she was proud to inspire the next generation of girls just as her mother inspired her. She also mentioned Michelle Obama's mother while sharing that both women "look to her."

Additionally, we saw photos of Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg as Miss Cleocatra talked about having her own "gang of great women" who shaped her. Other visual clues included a snake, a 5 domino and what looked like a blue-glowing wedding band at the end.

Her on-stage clue came courtesy of Wilson Phillips star (and Season 8's Lamb) Carnie Wilson. She sang a few lines from "Stop! In the Name of Love." By way of explanation, Miss Cleocatra added, "Well, The Supremes aren't just on my playlist. They're a part of my career!"

Tori Spelling Reveals Her Confession to Brian Austin Green Amid Dean McDermott Divorce

In her previous outing, Miss Cleaocatra told us she was inspired most by Glinda, the Good Witch. Like Ugly Sweater, she was given a chair to sit in during the panel's discussion, which again has us thinking an older performer who either has some mobility issues, or just struggles moving around in this huge, heavy costume.

Her clues included the notion that her life went from "gorgeous rainbows to horrendous black-and-white." She suggested that she was considered a national treasure, but wasn't able to feel that she'd earned that. Instead, she felt "wicked."

That is, until a diagnosis made everything crystal clear. It was one she "never wanted, but desperately needed." Now, she's glad she reached out for help. Visual clues included an hourglass, a crown, crow, and green luggage labeled, "Vacay!" and a sign reading, "Bel-Air."

On-stage, Miss Gulch brought out her clue, a magic wand. "I've already worked my magic on an Emmy-award-winning show," Miss Cleocatra explained.

Rita took The Supremes clue and figured maybe they're of the same era, leading her to speculate that maybe it was Roberta Flack, who wrote a song for Bette Midler. Robin, however thought of the Dreamgirls musical, and the film Jumping the Broom (for the wedding band) to land on Loretta Devine.

Ken, meanwhile, considered Diana Ross herself, though pivoting down toward her daughter Tracee Ellis Ross and her diva mother from black-ish , Jenifer Lewis. He even brought his own receipts, reminding everyone she sang backup for Bette and was in Sister Act with Whoopi.

It's the guess the internet has been all over since she first appeared, and they're not backing down now.

Yep Ken's right! Cleocatra IS Jenifer Lewis! HAS to be! Don't know if anyone on the panel (besides us here on X) has said her name in the past for Cleocatra, but someone FINALLY said it! #TheMaskedSinger — Brooke Parker (@gramfurn) April 25, 2024 @gramfurn

Hotel Staff Pulls 'The Office' Jell-O Prank on Rainn Wilson

("I'm So Excited," The Pointer Sisters) Beets continues to deliver incredible vocals both together and separately. They sing so powerfully individually, they have to be solo artists who also just happen to harmonize and perform well together. So either a duo that broke up, maybe, or solo artists that combined forces.

Guesses: The duo talked about how different they were from one another this time around, but said they just embraced their individuality and it worked. One described himself as a "ladies man," while the other said he was a "tough guy."

They talked about their decision to team up being the best thing, and they're still touring -- or "on the menu" they said, as they showed one. This followed an airplane ticket and what appeared to be mistletoe.

Season 2's Black Widow Raven-Symoné (and one-time Cheetah Girl) came out to sing their on-stage clue, which was SWV's "Weak" -- this one even got the crowd singing along; talk about an iconic track. "We made our audience weak on the knees on Broadway," Beets shared.

Their biggest Oz-spirations are Dorothy and Toto because of their "loyalty as friends." Our first instinct when they started singing was Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, then we started wondering about the Damons Wayan, but can any of them really sing this well?

The clue package said that for them, home is wherever they were together. They noted that at one point they had 40 million eyes on them, while a picture of a radio was on the screen One gifted the other the book Beeting the Odds, which led to card playing and the two of hearts.

They also described one another as the one with the "big ol' brain" and the one with the "unbeatable heart." On stage, Toto came out as the clue. "Like Toto and Dororthy, we're the best of friends," Beets explained. "And we're pretty good co-stars, too."

Robin confused himself a bit this week by suddenly picking up a bit of a country vibe, considering Brooks & Dunn. Jenny, though, wondered if perhaps it was Broadway stars -- and Schmigadoon! Co-stars -- TItuss Burgess and Alan Cumming.

Rita went off the rails a bit speculating that Scrubs co-stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison have the singing chops to pull off these kinds of performances. Have you seen their latest commercial with Jason Momoa?

No, the internet has this one spot-on. American Idol Season 2 winner and runner-up Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken joined up years back to star touring together and they've been successfully at it ever since. On top of that, just listen and you can absolutely hear their distinctive pipes. The internet heard it right away last time, and so did we!

Why Aaron Carter's Twin Sister Angel Thinks 3 of 4 Siblings Died Young & From Drug-Related Deaths

#GumballMask knows the stakes are high, and they're rising to the occasion here on #TheMaskedSinger ! pic.twitter.com/S4pOJCGF0u — The Masked Singer (@MaskedSingerFOX) April 25, 2024 @MaskedSingerFOX

("Wide Open Spaces," The Chicks) Gumball touched our hearts with this beautiful tribute to his wife. Even more, he really impressed with the power and upper range of his voice. This was total command, and you could feel how much emotion was pouring through him as he dedicated this one to the woman he clearly sees as his personal North Star.

Guesses: Gumball's wife was the main topic of his second clue package, with him sharing that she was this angel across the room when he first met her and they envisioned their future together. She was then hit with a medical diagnosis which changes how her future looks, leaving them with a major decision to make. They decided to live large and explore this world.

Visual clues in the package included a "Prom King" sash, crescent moon, a globe used to knock down three bowling pins, and angel wings and a halo when he talked about first seeing his wife … and how he still sees her.

Carnie Wilson returned to ask all the right questions with Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha," to which Gumball added, "Well don't you wish you could have starred with Channing Tatum like me." He added a little groove dance, which immediately evoked Magic Mike .

"For me, it's the Tin Man. When you met him, he was a little rusty, maybe just like me." That's what Gumball said when asked which Oz character inspired him the most. In his clue package, he opened up about his rocky road to stardom.

That included shockingly getting booed off the stage at a talent competition ... for winning! He said that he'd always known he wanted to be on the stage, he just couldn't figure out his path. Cue montage of playing drums, guitar, beatboxing, dancing, maybe even singing.

Visual cues included a horse-drawn chariot, a heart around the "American South," and Mississippi in particular, as well as a black spider dropping on a red-and-white mushroom. His on-stage clue arrived via flying monkey carrying a heart clock.

"At the end of the day, Tin Man always had the heart of a superhero, and I actually might, too." Rita wondered if he was hinting at The Boys and its Southern boy from Texas, Chace Crawford.

Rita is thinking is an actor, guessing maybe his Bullet Train co-star (if she remembered correctly) Aaron Taylor Johnson. Jenny speculated Derek Hough based on the combination of dance moves and vocals. Certainly his wife has been dealing with a more recent medical situation. She also tied the globe to his show World of Dance .

Ken, though, found himself convinced it might be Taran Killam. Taran's wife Cobie Smulders was diagnosed with cancer the same year as Ken's wife. He said there's no greater joy than performing for the one you love as the spouse of a cancer survivor.

Gumball has had the panel and the viewers at home stumped since we first met him, but there is a name that started cropping up a little more frequently this week.

Scott Porter, best known for Friday Night Lights has some bona fide singing chops and Off-Broadway credits to his name. Even more telling, his wife Kelsey Mayfield Porter tested positive for the Huntingon's gene, meaning she will eventually face the effects of the disease.

Why Billie Eilish Repeatedly Blew Off Zoe Kravitz

Seal (wild card).

("Hold On," Wilson Phillips) Seal has an adorable costume, but his vocals definitely left a lot to be desired. This is not a professional singer, or even someone who sings on the side. He may be someone who enjoys a few drinks and karaoke, or rocks out in the shower, but that's as far as we can hear it. The notes were all over the place, the cadence inconsistent, all the things that solidify that this is not what he does.

Guesses: Seal told us that he was "mistakenly perceived as a wild child," but was actually not. Nevertheless, he is well known from our "screens, radios, or posters tacked up on your walls." A poster he showed featured Seal with vampire fangs.

He shared that he was part of "one of the most famous groups in the world," while additional visual clues included a stuffed polar bear, treasure chest, a lab set, and drivers license.

His on-stage clue was "BO$$" by Fifth Harmony, as performed by Raven-Symoné. He contextualized it by saying, "It's easy to be confident when you have a boss like Steven Spielberg."

Ken quickly thought of Haley Joel Osment, who starred in A.I. Jenny considered Gremlins , instead, while also thinking of The Goonies group to land on Corey Feldman, who could sound like that as a singer. Robin was in a similar lane, considering Sean Astin.

In this case, the X-sphere (formerly the Twitter-sphere) was actually aligning with someone from the panel, convinced that the Seal -- who just asked to make out with Rita after she guessed her husband Waika Taititi -- is actually Corey Feldman. Honestly, we see it, too.

Anne Hathaway Recalls 'Gross' Chemistry Test Where She Had to 'Make Out' With 10 Different Guys

Round 2: smackdown.

Vocally, it felt like there was a pretty clear split. Gumball touched everyone with his beautiful performance, and the Beets might really be the ones to beat(s) out of this group. Miss Cleocatra was a little below her usual standard on this show, while Seal is just not a singer.

I want to make a joke that Cleocatra is going to club the Seal in the Smackdown - but that would be tasteless. I'm glad I didn't say it. #themaskedsinger — Dann (@ThePlumeNoir) April 25, 2024 @ThePlumeNoir

("Waterfalls," TLC) Miss Cleocatra oddly swallowed some of her words in the early going of this, but definitely redeemed herself by delivering the kind of fantastic diva-esque vocals we know she's capable of. Seal was a little closer to the right pitch, but still has zero artistry or flair on the lyrics. Instead, he played with the audience loving the cuteness of his costume. Could that work?

ruben studdard and clay aiken on tour

Francia Raisa Recalls Negativity She Faced After Donating Kidney to Selena Gomez

Unmasking 10.

This should have been fairly obvious, but there was the wild card factor of just how much focus we got on how much the studio audience was loving Seal for his antics, more than his singing voice. We're not going to say this was Miss Cleocatra's strongest outing -- and we'd have it between them -- but this should be Seal's week to come on, and go just as quickly.

They went in again about how adorable Seal is as a character, but that's not what this show is supposed to be about, is it? Is a legendary diva about to be outfoxed by a seal? Dare we say it could seal her fate? Well, turns out it did just that, as Miss Cleocatra became the next to go.

Ken pulled out one more receipt for Jenifer, recalling the "Bel-Air" clue and her role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air . With all these receipts in order, it was definitely time to return her to the world as her fabulous self, right?

"Listen guys, I took a long break," Jenifer Lewis explained after she was unmasked. "When they called, I said, you know, I haven't been on stage singing for a long time. So I said, come on, let's go. And it was fun. I had a blast!"

When asked if she had a message for the people at home, she spoke to them and the studio audience. "Do me a favor," she said. "You're so young and you're so beautiful, will you take care of yourself? And be loving to one another, you hear me? That's what I want for you."

The Masked Singer and Group B continues with "Soundtrack to My Life Night" next Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

This clue in last night’s the masked singer all but confirmed beets’ identity.

The Masked Singer season 11's Beets is a dynamic duo, and one of their Girl Group Night clues has most likely revealed their true identities.

  • The Masked Singer season 11's Beets are most likely American Idol season 2 winner and runner-up Ruben Studdard & Clay Aiken.
  • Beets' Broadway clue all but confirmed their identities.
  • None of The Masked Singer season 11 panelists has guessed them correctly yet.

The Masked Singer season 11 Group B's Beets have been a mystery since their debut, but one of their Girl Group clues all but confirmed their true identities . Beets first performed on The Wizard of Oz Night when they blew everyone away with their stunning rendition of "Home" by Michael Bublé. They then moved on to the next round, which was Girl Group Night, and sang "I'm So Excited" by The Pointer Sisters.

The Masked Singer season 11 contestants Beets have now moved on to the Group B finals, which will be Soundtrack of My Life Night. The dynamic duo has impressed everyone with their incredible vocals, and they're definitely front-runners to win. The Masked Singer panelists--Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora--have guessed a wide range of celebrities for their identities, including Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, K-Ci & JoJo, Steve Martin and Martin Short, Brooks & Dunn, Tituss Burgess and Alan Cumming, and Donald Faison and Zach Braff. However, no one has guessed Beets' identity correctly yet .

The masked singer season 11’s beets are most likely ruben studdard & clay aiken.

The Masked Singer season 11's Beets, the only contestant with more than one singer, are most likely American Idol season 2 winner and runner-up Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken . Not only do Beets sound exactly like the superstar singers, but the clues are pointing in their direction. Ruben and Clay aren't only singing partners, but they're very close friends as well.

The Broadway Clue That Confirmed Beets’ Identity As Ruben & Clay

" We made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway."

During The Masked Singer Girl Group Night, The Cheetah Girls' Raven-Symoné, who was The Masked Singer season 2's Black Widow, delivered a clue about Beets . Raven sang a girl group song that was a clue to Beets' true identity, which was "Weak" by SWV. Beets explained, " We made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway. "

Although there were many American Idol clues that hinted at Beets being Ruben and Clay, the Broadway clue sealed the deal. In 2018, Ruben and Clay starred on Broadway in Ruben & Clay's First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show . Clay also made his Broadway debut in Monty Python's Spamalot in 2008. This also explained the Christmas holly clue, which was a nod to Ruben and Clay's individual releases of Christmas music.

These Clues In Last Night’s The Masked Singer All But Confirmed Poodle Moth's Identity (Why I Think I Know Who It Is)

The american idol clues that confirmed beets’ identity as ruben & clay.

There were also several American Idol clues that proved that Ruben and Clay are Beets. During The Wizard of Oz Night, Beets revealed that, for a moment, they had 40 million eyes on them. They also talked about how, even when it felt as though the world was trying to pit them against each other, they always had each other's backs. They even referred to each other as "family." The Beet who seems to be Clay also said that he was "the total ladies man," which is most likely a nod to Clay's heartthrob status at the time, and his fans' nickname, the Claymates.

In addition, Beets played cards in their Masked Singer clue package , with one Beet winning the game by placing a two of hearts card on the table. All of these clues point to the extraordinary American Idol season 2 finale in which Ruben and Clay competed against each other for the crown. During Girl Group Night, Beets also said that they didn't try to outdo each other, and instead they teamed up. Ruben and Clay recently performed together in a 2023 tour to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their American Idol run . The tour was called Twenty: The Tour , with Ruben and Clay performing all around the United States.

Although Beets' true identities won't be confirmed until they're unmasked, their unmistakable vocals and the obvious clues have given away that they're actually Ruben and Clay . If Beets goes all the way on The Masked Singer season 11, it'll be heartwarming to see both of them win. Whatever happens, the Beets will surely go on in the competition.

The Masked Singer season 11 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on FOX.

American Idol Death Hoax Debunked

Ruben Studdard’s death hoax has been spreading on the internet for quite a while. However, the rumors turned out to be false, and Ruben Studdard is indeed alive.

Studdard rose to fame after he won the second season of the singing reality show American Idol.

He has released seven studio albums, including the platinum-selling debut album, Soulful, and the hit gospel follow-up, I Need an Angel.

Some of Studdard’s hit singles include “Flying Without Wings,” “Sorry 2004,” and “Change Me.”

He was also seen as Fats Waller, the legendary American jazz musician, in the national tour revival of the musical revue, Ain’t Misbehavin,’ spawning a Grammy-nominated soundtrack.

The 44-year-old made his Broadway debut in December 2018 at the Imperial Theater with Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show.

Ruben Studdard Alive: Death Hoax Debunked

Ruben Studdard is alive, and the news of his death is false. Unfortunately, he has been the latest victim of the internet death hoax.

The American Ido winner’s death news spread over the internet in January 2023.

Many fans believed the news and shared their grieves over the passing of their beloved singer.

People took to social media without fact-checking to convey their condolences to the 43-year-old’s family.

However, Studdard is confirmed to be alive and doing what he does best: singing. He is pretty active on social media and just uploaded content on his Instagram account.

On Monday, January 16, 2023, Studdard was in Cerritos, California, to perform songs by Luther Vandross to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.

The 2003 Idol winner posted a clip of the concert on his Instagram the same day, signifying that he is alive and doing well.

Hence, the Ruben Studdard death hoax is proved to be false, as he is alive and performing for his fans.

Nevertheless, Studdard was in the middle of another internet death hoax a decade ago.

There were many reports in 2010 that the Change Me singer was dead. Unfortunately, the rumors spread so much that the singer had to address them.

In November 2010, the singer posted on his Twitter profile, “And I’m Alive yall I hate stupid rumors.”

Since then, rumors of Studdard’s death have been circulating on the internet now and then. However, all those hoaxes are false, and the beloved singer is very well.

Ruben Studdard Family Background

Ruben Studdard was born in Frankfurt, West Germany, on September 12, 1978.

His father was stationed with the US Army in Frankfurt when he was born. The family returned to Birmingham, Alabama, where Ruben was raised.

Studdard was the youngest child of his parent; he had an older brother Kevin Studdard.

Sadly, Kevin passed away in May 2018, and Ruben posted a touching tribute to his “Best Big Brother ever,” who always had his back.

Ruben was a music fan from an early age, as he grew up listening to Donny Hathaway, Fred Hammond, and other gospel music.

He sang for the first time at the Rising Baptist Church in his hometown at the age of three.

Mrs. Studdard used to sing with a local choir in the church, where Ruben sang solos as a child.

Studdard studied at Huffman High School and got a scholarship to Alabama A&M University due to his football background.

He majored in voice studies and joined the Omicron Delta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Later, he auditioned for American Idol in 2003, where he sang Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky.”

In the May finale, out of 24,000,000, Studdard won the competition by getting 134,000 votes more than the runner-up, Clay Aiken.

After his win, Alabama Governor Bob Riley declared March 11, 2003, the Ruben Studdard Day.

Katy Perry Reveals "Amazing" Singer She Wants to Replace Her on American Idol

As katy perry wraps up her final season on american idol , she exclusively told e news who she'd like to replace her at the judges' table alongside luke bryan and lionel richie..

Dim the lights, Katy Perry  has a pitch for American Idol .

The "Firework" singer, who is set to leave the ABC competition series after this season, recently revealed who she'd like to see join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at the judges' table.

"I gotta say Jelly Roll  was crazy when he came on the show," Katy told E! News  after American Idol 's April 15 live show. "I was convinced at anything he said. He could run for president, he could be my pastor, I might go back to church for him. He could sell me anything."

"So I love him," she noted of the "Wild Ones" artist, who recently appeared on the April 8 episode of Idol . "And to have any of these guys plus Jelly on the show would be amazing. I love you, Jelly!" (For more Idol interviews, watch E! News April 16.)

When it comes down to it, Perry just wants her replacement to speak their mind.

"I want a truth teller," she added. "I want someone that is not afraid to tell the truth in a graceful way."

Plus, the future judge needs to be someone who "doesn't read the comments" from haters online.

As the "Hot N Cold" artist knows all too well, "Unfortunately, when you're a woman and you have an opinion or you're a boss, sometimes you're also considered a B-I-T-C-[H]…so just someone that has a strong sense of self, that listens to their intuition."

—Reporting by Monica Fink

The mom of River and Remy has come a long way since experiencing a moment like this on the inaugural season of American Idol  in 2002. The New York resident has collected three Grammys and counting (with her latest disc, Chemistry , up for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2024 Grammys ), notched three No. 1 hits, starred on NBC's The Voice as a judge and is now hosting her own award-winning daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show .

The season two runner-up made two big reveals in September 2008—annoucing that the birth of his son Parker (with his close friend, music produer Jaymes Foster ) inspired him to come out. "I can't raise a kid and teach him how to lie, teach him to hide things," he reasoned on Good Morning America . "And at the same time, I also don't ever want to raise him in an environment where it's not OK for him to be exactly who he is, no matter what." Since then, the famous red-head switched from music to politics, even making a run for Congress in 2016. After losing in the election, the singer released a documentary about his journey. But he hasn't totally left music in the rearview, announcing his plans to tour with season two champ Ruben Studdard in 2024.

Before being dumped by his record label (along with season five champ Taylor Hicks ) in early 2008, the Velvet Teddy Bear scored a Grammy nomination and released a handful of successful albums. Then, in 2013, the singer starred as one of the contestants on The Biggest Loser  and quickly became a fan-favorite. He was eliminated twice , but took away valuable lessons from the show. And while he and Clay remain tight, he found his forever partner in wife Kristin , who will welcome their second child in 2024.

Truth is, the season three champion is grateful for every step of her journey. "We go through things, you fall, you get back up," she shared with E! News in December. And though she's weathered some tough moments, "For me, losing everything twice, having to fight to get back here, it feels good."  Her latest high notes include welcoming daughter Keziah with husband Kendall Taylor in 2021 and receiving a Golden Globe nod for The Color Purple remake. Said the North Carolina native, also mom to 22-year-old daughter Zion , "I want to enjoy this and know that I worked hard to get here."

She may not have won season three, but we are telling you the musician made up for it: First an Oscar for 2006's Dreamgirls , then a Grammy for her performance The Color Purple musical adaption in 2017, plus a stint as a judge on The Voice . The latest project for the mom to David , 14: Her own eponymous talk show .

From the moment she stepped onto the Idol stage, Underwood cemented her place in pop culture. Sure enough, not only did she win season four, but she's also gone on to become country music's reigning princess. She went on to co-host the CMA Awards for more than 10 years with fellow artist, Brad Paisley . And between balancing her music career with her hosting duties, the "Jesus Take The Wheel Singer" is a mom to her two sons with retired NHL center Mike Fisher .

The season four runner-up is now married with three boys and a girl . Despite suffering serious health problems in 2006, the Southern rocker has released three hit albums since his stint on Idol.

Constantine Maroulis

With his big hair and even bigger voice (who can forget his rousing rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" during season four?), Constantine was a perfect fit for Broadway's  Rock of Ages , for which he earned a Tony nom. Currently touring with his single "Comeback," the dad to 13-year-old  Malena is also starring in Broadway's Rock & Roll Man .

After his season-five victory, the silver fox's eponymous album went platinum and he starred in a Broadway production of Grease . In more recent years, he has made the switch from music to TV as a host of a show called  State-Plate , which focuses on the premise of farm-to-table eating. Though he remains committed to his first love, with a slate of tour dates set for January 2024.

Long before Bieber fever, there was McPheever, which has helped Katharine land both singing and acting work, most notably in the Broadway-inspired show Smash and the drama Scorpion . Wed to David Foster since 2019, she is now mom to musically-inclined son Rennie . "I would love for him to follow in his dad's footsteps and just be really well-versed in all different types of musical instruments," Katharine told E! News . "Obviously, he's 2-and-a-half. We're not pushing him. We're just letting him do his thing. But, I would love for him to have a working understanding of all instruments a lot like his dad. I think he's on his way—that's for sure."

Elliott Yamin

After  American Idol , the season five finalist, who had a hit with the song "Wait for You," went to Angola where he worked alongside former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to raise awareness for Malaria No More. Elliott also made news in 2010 after experiencing Chile's earthquake and living to tweet about it. Still making music, he shares daughter Camilla , 3, with Karen Cruz .

While the country music singer finished sixth on the fifth season of American Idol , she has starred in Hallmark's Christmas in Graceland and earned three Daytime Emmy nods for her TV show Pickler & Ben . Following husband Kyle Jacobs death by suicide in February 2023, she's been reflecting on their years together. "One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don't know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still,'" Pickler told  People in an interview published this past August. "I have chosen to heed his advice."

As the youngest ever winner, the season six champ set off some serious, well, sparks in 2007. Her Battlefield tour took her to 35 cities around the U.S., and (if that wasn't enough), she made her Broadway debut in 2010, starring in the musical In the Heights . Her success and good fortune has continued, with the star giving birth  to her first son with husband Dana Isaiah in May of 2018.  In the years since, she made an emotional return to Idol and competed on the 31st season of Dancing With the Stars .

The season seven winner's big hit "Time of My Life" may reflect his singing success, but the title could just as easily apply to his endeavors offstage. David visited Ethiopia in 2010 on behalf of the United Nations' efforts to empower women in that country. He also ran in the Race for Hope in D.C. to raise money for brain cancer research in honor of his brother Adam , who lost his fight with the disease in 2009. Married to Racheal Stump since 2015, the still-touring musician released his latest single "TABOS" in 2022.

After finishing in second place to his fellow David on season seven, the singer embarked on a two-year mission for the Church of the Latter Day Saint's in Chile. Since his  return in 2014  he has continued performing. He came out as member of the LGBTQ+ community in June 2021. "It’s been a beautiful journey learning to accept myself," he shared on Instagram in October, "and I hope just by living my life now I can encourage many of you out there to do the same."

Nearly eclipsed in the media spotlight by his runner-up, Adam Lambert , the season eight champ has enjoyed quiet success with his self-titled second album. Released in November 2009, it debuted at no. 11 on the Billboard 200, and one of its singles, "I Need to Know," was featured on an episode of The Vampire Diaries.  In the meantime, the star has been growing his family, having welcomed three children with his high school sweetheart  Katy O'Connell .

If publicity were a prize, the eighth season's controversial runner-up is a grand-slam winner. Since his time on the reality show, he's released several albums, headlined tours, received countless nominations (including a Grammy nod), followed in Freddie Mercury 's footsteps touring as the frontman for Queen and has even starred in Fox's remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show . Not to forget that he briefly filled in as a guest judge on  Idol . The singer also helped open up the 2019 Oscars with a performance of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."

After season 8 of American Idol ,   Gokey got married to his now-wife Leyicet Peralta in 2012, and the pair have four children together.

As a three-time Grammy nominee, he released a Christian music album titled Jesus People in 2021. He also has an eyewear brand named Danny Gokey Eyewear.

After joining the top 10 finalists' summer tour in 2010, the season nine winner launched his solo music career . Lee also married model-actress   Jonna Walsh in 2012 after they met on the set of his first music video following Idol . Nowadays, the star is a well-established singer-songwriter , with his tracks making it onto shows like  The Walking Dead .

Crystal Bowersox

Runner-up to Lee DeWyze in season nine, the Janis Joplin -esque rocker married musician Brian Walker and released her first album, Farmer's Daughter , in December 2010. She lost her label deal when RCA disbanded Arista, J Records and Jive Records, but she made her acting debut on the second season of ABC's Body of Proof . In May 2013, the singer split from her husband. After her divorce she told  The Boot   that her second album All That For Thi s was "the next chapter of my life." The mom of two has since released 2017's Alive and 2022's HitchHiker .

Scotty McCreery

The season 10 winner was the first Idol champ since Ruben to have his first album, Clear as Day , debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. He was named New Artist of the Year at the 2011 American Country Awards and sang the national anthem before Game 1 of the World Series that same year. In June 2018, the "This Is It" and "Five More Minutes" singer married longtime girlfriend  Gabi Dugal . They welcomed son Avery in October 2022.

The country darling finished second to Scotty, but she got her record deal and released her studio debut, Wildflower , in October 2011. Following her time on Idol , the singer presented with Scotty at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, made her Grand Ole Opry debut and even performed with Martina McBride at the CMA Music Festival. In 2017, she got her first nod from the CMAs when she was nominated for Best New Artist following her success with her album, Road Less Traveled . She even made her move to the big screen when she starred in a film of the same name. The "Thicc As Thieves" singer revealed her engagement to Cam Arnold while performing at the Grand Ole Opry in November 2022.

The season 10 contestant only finished sixth—and that was partly because the judges used their one save of the season five weeks beforehand—but he was a cult fave. He performed on the Idols Live tour, cut a cover of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with fellow finalist (and rumored flame) Haley Reinhart , and ultimately signed with jazz label Concord. His self-titled debut album was released in 2012, and was followed by 2018's I Put A Spell On You and 2019's Jazz .

Sure, he was cut before the live voting rounds in season 10, but Allen has since released two consecutive No. 1 hits with 2018's "Best Shot" and "Make Me Want To" and won the 2021 Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year. In April 2023, he and wife Alexis Allen announced that they were expecting their third child and ending their two-year marriage. Nearly a month later, Jimmie was accused of sexual assault and abuse by his former manager in a lawsuit. Though the musician admitted to being unfaithful, publicly apologizing to Alexis "for humiliating her with my affair," he denied the sexual misconduct allegations and said the relationship with his former manager was a "consensual" one.  Shortly after welcoming son Cohen Ace James in September, the couple revealed they were trying to repair their union .

After his season 11 win, the musician rose to the top of the charts with his hit single, "Home," which also served as a theme song for NBC's coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. He released his latest album, Drift Back this past June. In 2015, he married his girlfriend,  Hannah Blackwell , in a small ceremony while surrounded by his family and friends. Four years later, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Patch .

Maddie Poppe

"There is a lot of different sounding songs on the album," the season 16 winner teased to E! News ahead of releasing the appropriately named Whirlwind in 2019, a year after her Idol victory. "I can't pick just one [sound] to stick with because I really love them all so much and it's hard to stay in one vein."  Her latest single, 2023's "SOS I'm In Love" has a strong POV, though. Because she is, by the way, revealing her romance with musician Gabe Burdulis after her split from season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson .

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Since becoming the runner-up of season 16, the singer has focused on releasing new music and enjoying life's opportunities that come with appearing on the ABC series. "I've always loved music and I've always wanted to be an artist," Caleb Lee shared with E! News. "But I learned so much about entertainment. I got to go to Luke Bryan 's last show for his tour and I got to come out and sing a song with him." He released his latest disc, Southern Galactic in November.

After coming in third on season 16 of Idol , the "I Hope" country singer focused on finishing her album. "I'm excited to play Stagecoach. And touring with Brad Paisley is the cherry on top to everything," she told E! News. "It's crazy to go on tour with him." Nearly two years after she and fellow alum Cade Foehner welcomed their first baby together , daughter Baylah , they added son Augustine to the mix in October 2022. This past August, she revealed she was expecting their third child .

Raven-Symoné Returns To The Masked Singer To Reveal Cryptic Clue About Beets

  • Raven-Symoné returns to The Masked Singer for clues and performance, steals spotlight with upcoming rendition of "Weak" by SWV.
  • The mysterious duo The Beets intrigues viewers with harmonious performances, sparking speculation on their possible identities.
  • Speculations range from Jason Bateman & Will Arnett to Ruben Studdard & Clay Aiken, though their true identities remain a mystery.

The Masked Singer season 2 star Raven-Symoné will be returning to the series to deliver clues about The Masked Singer season 11 ’s duo, The Beets , with an exciting performance. Raven, originally a member of The Cheetah Girls, has been a star of stage and screen since they were just 3 years old. Their appearance on The Masked Singer season 2 as the Black Widow made waves when they were one of two Cheetah Girls to appear on the show during the season. Joining their former costar Adrienne Bailon-Houghton, who was the Flamingo on the series, Raven took tenth place.

"made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway”

In a sneak peek from an upcoming episode of The Masked Singer season 11, Raven returns for their first visit to the series since appearing on it themselves. In a clue that doubles as a performance, Raven is returning to the series to perform “Weak” by R&B trio SWV. The Beets shared that they “made our audience weak in the knees on Broadway”, which is why they wanted Raven to sing that particular song. The Beets, a duo in the competition, have been rumored to be quite a few different pairs, but the clue simply adds to their mystery.

Who might be inside beets costume on the masked singer.

While there has been a lot of speculation about who could be inside the Beets costume , The Masked Singer viewers haven’t been able to come to a solid conclusion about the duo yet. The duo was introduced on Wizard Of Oz night, and have been able to continue on throughout the season with some spectacular performances thus far. During their first time on stage, the duo sang “Home” by Michael Bublé in a beautiful harmony. Their harmonizing along with the clue that the pair are loyal friends pushed some to believe the pair could be an acting or comedy duo.

Though the clues have led the judges to speculate of Jason Bateman & Will Arnett, K-Ci & JoJo, or Steve Martin & Martin Short, The Masked Singer season 11 viewers have been wondering if the duo is actually American Idol season 2 finalists Ruben Studdard & Clay Aiken . With clues surrounding their perceived rivalry in the original singing competition to others that allude to both mens’ careers on Broadway, it’s possible that the former Idol competitors are now working together as a team on The Masked Singer . Though The Beets are still in the competition, their performances appear to lend credence to the idea.

While there’s no confirmation that The Masked Singer season 11’s duo is Ruben and Clay , the clues and performances have led many fans to believe that the pair are in the extravagant Beets costume. Despite there being no confirmation yet, many believe they’ve solved the mystery and are moving on to other performances to try and see what they can figure out ahead of their exciting reveals. With The Masked Singer bringing back performers like Raven to reveal new clues about the cast, the excitement is at an all-time high.

The Masked Singer airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
