The Perfect Senior Bag Setup

I have been trying to get the best clubs for my bag, that help myself to score better and work for a senior golfer. I have spent a small fortune on clubs and have finally settled on my current bag. For seniors the club requirements are totally different from the younger players. I need clubs that help elevate the ball and give me a chance to keep the ball in play. I would like to see your "senior set up" as well. So, what's in your bag?

@Dan Drake I agree Dan. There is a lot of ego in this game, even some of us seniors refuse to wake up to reality, lol. It's a game. It's supposed to be fun. I play the senior tees without
Don't forget the telescopic ball retriever...haha sorry I had to note that. Every senior bag has one that I have ever seen lol.

I would think 6 or 7-W in irons with a gap and sand wedge(possibly 58) and the rest of your bag being hybrids, fairways and driver. I’d definitely look at getting fitted so you don’t have gapping issues or buy a club that you may not need. Think a 3 wood you can’t elevate or stop reasonably quickly.

My home course has pot bunkers and very soft sand which I struggle with unless I have the 60* K grind. Away from home I usually drop the 60* and stick in another hybrid. Life would be easier if they would let me just leave the 15 in the bag.
I wonder if life is a bit easier for seniors like me - I'm 67- who play links golf most of the time. Yes we have the occassional forced carry but the links game doesn't demand towering iron or hybrid shots over and over again. A lot of the time you don't need to play the ball through the air in the way you must on many inland/US style courses. You can play the game on the ground.

That looks really nice. I guess you are still getting used to them?
Nowadays not really sure what a “senior golfer” really is. I think the way to address these issues is to define handicap range and swing speed of driver and current distance and trajectory of maybe a 6 iron and an 8 iron. Other big question is the extent to which ball compression is really taking place. I play with guys aged from 50-80 and their sets vary from super forgiving sets up to players sets with blades and stiff shafts. I’m 72 and driver is still around 250-275, 6 iron is 170, 8 iron is 150, PW is 125, 56 is 100-105, 60 is 65-85. Get fit for your clubs, continue to take lessons, perform stretches and yoga moves constantly, and if necessary, do stretching in a hot shower before heading to the range. Maybe most of all don’t define yourself as “senior” at 50, 60, or even 70. My favorite “senior” is now 100 years old, but he was still walking and carrying and shooting par at 80.

I'm definitely a senior golfer at 71 years old. Here's my bag setup and like the OP, I've spent a lot of money getting to this point and feel pretty good about my current bag, but with money in my pocket, there's always room for improvement. Considering the PXG 0211's.

I agree with everything you say here, but genetics plays a big role in this stuff, too. I'm fortunate to have a game that isn't all that different from what it was at age 30, but I can't pretend it's a result of great workout discipline ...
10.5 GMax (12 grams of lead tape at the heel to make it an SFT.)
3, 5 and 7 k15 woods
5 and 6 irons but sometimes both 5 and 6 hybrids
7, 8, 9, pw, uw, SW (54)
56 sand wedge
Ricky Johnson 506 Wide Body center shaft putter
I play 2 totally different Sand wedges. One for everything except sand, and one for just sand. I'm 64, one fake hip and one to be replaced this fall.
Maybe I should have mentioned driver distance at the start. That way it could be thinned out. I am thinking 180- 240 yard drives? What I am getting at is the club set up to maximize the shorter distances. BTW Swing Blade is a golf freak! There, I said it. I guess this applies to those playing the senior and white tees mostly.

I've adjusted pretty well. Especially in the 7-9 FW and 5-6 hybrids. They are so much easier to hit. So from 150 to 180 I'm much more confident now.
Wedges are the biggest adjustment right now. Having played Vokey SM6/7 for the past 3 years.

I agree also. It’s genetics and luck. And, it can all change in a moment. But, I feel it’s mainly about flexibility and stretching and tension free swing dynamics, not working out. My golf guru who held several course records and is now 100 always says to draw the bow and then release the arrow. It took me several years to even begin to comprehend what he was saying. Still working at it.
Hertsjoatmon
While not a senior, I decided to go with a very senior style set up for the forgiving nature of such clubs rather than anything else. Had my driver swing speed checked yesterday and I was swinging 94-97 on the range but more like 85-90 on course. I had decided that I need to stop taking it too seriously as a really high handicapper and play just to enjoy the game. I don't get much time to practice, so not looking to shape shots etc.

"For seniors the club requirements are totally different from the younger players" - was going to comment differently but I see OP provided some context.
My specs, eligible for U.S. Senior Open age wise, not sure how "senior" we are talking about, aren't really any different than they were 20 years ago. I've gone to graphite shafts in my irons, but still stiff shafts. I'd say the only real difference is my iron shafts are much lighter weight and my shafts in driver/fairways are much lighter than I'm sure they were 20 years ago, but still stiff graphite.
Your club requirements are what you need - not all younger players swing it 110, not all older players swing it 80.

That last line nailed it. Even though I have went back to hitting my old Mac blades I do have Hogan Apex #2 steel shafts in them which is a senior shaft. Regular shafts in the FW and 23* hybrid and driver. Those Swing Science graphite shafts in my KZG CBs are senior flex also.

Welcome to the only place on the internet you’ll see in-hand photos and WITBs for all 30 players in the Tour Championship! (Rory McIlroy’s bag pictured in the featured image)
With the PGA Tour season wrapping up at East Lake this week, we wanted to do something a little different, and dare we say, momentous: full-field WITBs. ( Yes, yes, we know it’s a lot easier to do the full field when there are only 30 guys in the field… )
With that said, and without further ado, let’s get to the WITBs!

Winner's Bag: Jerry Kelly's equipment at the American Family Insurance Championship
Steve Dykes
Jerry Kelly has now officially topped his PGA Tour win total (three) on the senior tour with his American Family Insurance Championship victory this weekend.
Kelly—a Wisconsinite—birdied the third hole of a playoff with Retief Goosen and fellow Wisconsin native Steve Stricker, who bowed out a hole earlier, to take the title at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison, Wisc.
In winning his fourth PGA Tour Champions event, Kelly played mostly error-free golf over the 54 holes and three in overtime. He hit 46 of 54 greens in regulation with his Srixon Z 745 irons and led the field in scrambling at 100 percent, including being three-for-three in sand saves—his only two bogeys coming when he did not have a scrambling opportunity.
Kelly, interestingly, eschews the four- or five-wedge setup favored by most tour players, using just three (including pitching wedge) instead. His primary wedges are a 52- and 58-degree Cleveland RTX-4 , which uses a three-tiered milling process for the grooves and surface roughness that results in sharper edges.

Doug barron wins first pga tour champions major at 2024 regions tradition, share this article.
Just before the start of the final round of the 2024 Regions Tradition, the first of five majors in 2024 on the PGA Tour Champions schedule, Steve Stricker withdrew from next week’s PGA Championship, the second major of the PGA Tour campaign. Stricker was in that field by virtue of his win in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.
He’s also the two-time defending champ of the Regions Tradition at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama, but a final-round 69 left him short of an eighth Champions tour major.
Sunday started with Doug Barron and Ernie Els, both chasing their first PGA Tour Champions major title, tied for the lead.
While Els could only spin his wheels, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish 14-under, Barron, who said he woke up at four in the morning but sounded like he didn’t mean to, took control of the event. He followed his third-round 66 – the best round of the day by three shots – with a bogey-free, final-round 68 to finish 17 under and win his first senior major by two shots.
“Today was just a dream come true, beating all these great players,” Barron told Golf Channel on the 18th green minutes after his victory. He was in the final group alongside Els and Padraig Harrington.
At the @RegionsTrad , all champions receive a green bike. Doug Barron decided to take a victory lap 🤣 pic.twitter.com/bEzENMjZwv — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) May 13, 2024
Barron, 54, earned $390,000 for the win. The total purse for the tournament was $2.6 million. He now has three victories on the senior circuit.
He praised his putting coach for his success on the greens all week.
“I got one of the best putting lessons from my coach back home last week, and I really got my putter going. I felt like I could make an 8-footer again,” he said. “It was huge because I didn’t hit any fairways. I hardly missed a fairway coming into today.”
Steven Alker was solo second after firing a 9-under 63 on Sunday, the best score of the week by two shots.
Stewart Cink finished tied for third with Stricker and Els. Charlie Wi and K.J. Choi tied for sixth. Bernhard Langer, in his second event back after recovering from Achilles surgery, tied for eighth with Kenny Perry. Padraig Harrington, Brian Gay and Stuart Appleby tied for 10th at 9 under. Harrington was in the final group but posted a final-round 74.

Like all the major championships, the 2024 PGA Championship purse has increased significantly over the years, and it made another jump this year.
Just how much of an increase are we talking about? A brief overview: Just three years ago, in 2021, the purse was set at $12 million — what was then a record total for the tournament, and a number that was surpassed by only the U.S. Open. Two years ago, the 2022 PGA Championship purse increased to $15 million. And last year, the 2023 PGA Championship purse jumped yet again to a whopping total of $17.5 million. (The Players Championship remains the richest purse in golf at a total of $25 million.)
This year, the 2024 PGA Championship purse increased again to a total of $18.5 million. To put that number in perspective, the eight PGA Tour Signature Events offer $20 million purses, a number that was matched by the 2024 Masters purse and the 2023 U.S. Open purse . The 2023 Open Championship purse was $16.5 million.
This year’s PGA champion will surpass the payout received by 2023 champion Brooks Koepka by $150,000, with a $3.3 million total payday. The runner-up will receive a cool $1.99 million, and third place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1.26 million.
Even the players who missed the cut receive a payout of $4,000 each. So how much did the rest of the players in the field come away with this year? You can find a complete list of the 2024 PGA Championship payouts for each player below.

Scottie Scheffler's 41-round par-or-better streak ends with substitute caddie on bag at 2024 PGA Championship
The world's top-ranked golfer was without a crucial member of his team on saturday in louisville.
Scottie Scheffler had answered just about every question thrown his way in 2024. Would he putt well enough to start winning tournaments? Yes. Would he claim another major championship? Yes. Would he play and contend the week following his Masters triumph? Yes. Would he be able to balance his personal and professional life with a new child on the way? Yes.
This week at the 2024 PGA Championship, he was thrown two more. How will he compete after being arrested and released following a chaotic traffic incident ahead of Friday's second round? Will he be able to play as well Saturday with his usual caddie missing from his bag for 18 holes?
Scheffler answered the former in the affirmative, shaking off that arrest to post a 5-under 66 on Friday and shoot his way up the leaderboard. As for the latter? Well, it's a bit of his unknown.
Whether it was the change in caddie, built-up exhaustion from his chaotic Friday or (likely) a combination of the two, Scheffler finished Moving Day with a 74. Shooting 3 over, he ended a streak over which he scored par or better across 41 straight rounds dating back to Aug. 26, 2023.
"I was definitely not feeling like myself today, for sure," Scheffler told CBS's Amanda Balionis after the round. "Yesterday happened, and I did my best to recover from it, and come out here and compete today. I did a great job yesterday of coming out and competing, riding the adrenaline. This morning was definitely not my usual routine for a round, if that makes sense. … I wasn't able to get it done, which is pretty frustrating, but I'll come back and try again tomorrow."
Steve Stricker set the PGA Tour record at 55 rounds last year, surpassing Tiger Woods' achievement of 53 straight rounds earlier in his career.
Scheffler revealed Tuesday that his bag man since late 2021, Ted Scott, would not lug his sticks around the par 71 Valhalla Golf Club on Saturday as Scott would instead attend his daughter's high school graduation. Scott flew out of Louisville on Friday evening after the second round with a plan to celebrate his daughter's achievement Saturday before return at some point in the evening evening to resume his duties for the final round Sunday.
"That's something we talked about from the beginning of our relationship was family always comes first, and it's the same thing for me as it is for my caddie," Scheffler explained. "It was a pretty easy decision. He told me at the beginning of this year that was the date that it was, so I got a backup caddie lined up. One of my buddies is going to carry the bag on Saturday, and then Ted will be back for Sunday's round."
In Scott's place, Brad Payne assumed the role as Scheffler's right-hand man for the third round. Payne currently serves as a PGA Tour chaplain after having played collegiate golf at Pepperdine University.
"It's one of my older friends who travels week to week out here," Scheffler said. "He's the Tour chaplain. His name is Brad, and he's caddying for me on Saturday. I trust him to rake a bunker more than my buddies."

Scottie Scheffler’s caddie missing PGA Championship third round, chaplain on bag in latest wrinkle
S cottie Scheffler is already dealing with the drama around his unexpected arrest and will add to that not having his trusted caddie with him for the next 18 holes of the PGA Championship.
The world’s No. 1 golfer was arrested and released prior to his Friday tee time due to a chaotic traffic violation and didn’t slow him down as he shot 5-under 66 to get to 9-under — three shots behind leader Xander Schauffele.
He was charged with charged with second-degree assault of a police officer and third-degree criminal mischief along with reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer.
Scheffler will now be without Ted Scott, who has been his caddie since 2021, to start the third round at Valhalla Golf Club on Saturday.
However, the caddie change has nothing to do with Friday’s incident, as Scheffler revealed the plan ahead of the tournament.
On Tuesday, Scheffler mentioned that Scott will fly out of Louisville to attend his daughter’s high school graduation on Saturday before returning at some point that evening to be with Scheffler for the final round on Sunday.
“That’s something we talked about from the beginning of our relationship was family always comes first, and it’s the same thing for me as it is for my caddie,” Scheffler said. “It was a pretty easy decision. He told me at the beginning of this year that was the date that it was, so I got a backup caddie lined up. One of my buddies is going to carry the bag on Saturday, and then Ted will be back for Sunday’s round.”
Instead, long-term friend Brad Payne, who is a PGA Tour chaplain after playing golf at Pepperdine University, will be in alongside Scheffler.
“It’s one of my older friends who travels week to week out here…” Scheffler said on Tuesday. “I trust him to rake a bunker more than my buddies.”
As chaplain, Payne is around the golfers often, lending support to the players, their families and friends, and several others involved in the tournament’s events.
Payne also previously served as a caddie for former PGA Tour golfer Paul Stankowski, according to PGATour.com.
Scott, who has been Scheffler’s caddie through his 10 PGA Tour victories, will not miss his possible 11th and third major championship win on Sunday.

What’s In The Bag: Tommy Fleetwood

A birdie-birdie finish at Dubai Creek Resort leapfrogged Fleetwood ahead of Ryder Cup stablemate Rory McIlroy to secure the Englishman a long-overdue first victory since November 2022.
Despite the title drought, Fleetwood’s consistency in 2023, highlighted by nine top-10 finishes from 21 starts on the PGA Tour, would have left few surprised at his return to the winner’s circle.
“Like almost everybody else in the world of golf, I don’t win anywhere near as much as I would like to, but just that winning feeling is great, said Fleetwood.
“I feel like I’ve been saying for a long time that I’ve been doing a lot of really great things. I have amazing people that I’m working with, win, lose, or draw today. Next week will be the same. We just crack on and we keep pushing forward and hopefully keep moving in the right direction.”
Four rounds in the 60s (66-69-63-67) got the job done for Fleetwood, who maintained the lead for the majority of round four until McIlroy’s three straight birdies down the stretch looked to have wrestled back the trophy.
A final twist in the tale saw McIlroy find the water on 18, before Fleetwood holed out from 16 feet, snatching back victory as his good friend was resigned to bogey and a T2 finish.
The win was Fleetwood’s third in the UAE, a happy hunting ground following 2017 and 2018 triumphs in Abu Dhabi, and a second-place finish at the DP World Tour Championship in 2023.
Fleetwood last tasted individual glory in 2022, successfully defending the Nedbank Golf Challenge as the event returned to Sun City in South Africa for the first time since the Covid pandemic.
The Englishman produced a superb five-under-par 67 on Sunday to come from behind and beat the in-form Ryan Fox by a single shot to seal his sixth DP World Tour title.
It was an emotional win for the 31-year-old, who lifted the trophy in front of his family, boosted his hopes of making a third consecutive Ryder Cup appearance, and moved back up to 23rd in the world having been in danger of slipping out of the top 50 earlier in the year.
Continued form in 2023 enabled Fleetwood to continue his rise up the rankings, and in September was announced as a Captain’s Pick by Luke Donald for the Ryder Cup in Rome.
A selection that paid dividends, winning three points from his four matches, beating Rickie Fowler 3&1 in the penultimate singles match, and securing the tie-winning point for Team Europe.
“As I was walking down the 11th, I said to myself that Rickie [Fowler] is going to hit it into the water at the 16th and that’s where I’m going to win the Ryder Cup. For whatever reason, that just came into mind,” said Fleetwood after his premonition became reality at Marco Simone.
Fleetwood is a TaylorMade staff player having joined the brand in 2021 and, barring a wedge and his putter, plays a full bag of their clubs. Let’s take a closer look at Tommy Fleetwood’s golf equipment for 2024.

TaylorMade's new 2024 driver!
Fleetwood spent hours over the 2020-2021 winter perfecting his bag with Adrian Rietveld, TaylorMade’s senior manager of Global Tour Operations, who told us: “Equipment free agents learn a lot as they have access to everything and everyone. Each brand wants access to you, but I think over time players see the benefits of having a dedicated company looking after them. For someone like Tommy, who’s the ultimate nice guy, he found the middle ground of the commitment TaylorMade could offer, along with a contract that’s very much in his interests. We weren’t the only company looking to sign him – we had to win his team’s trust.”
Rietveld then gave us all the details of what the two have done, how they settled on which clubs, and how their decisions could help you choose the best gear for your game this year.
Why Fleetwood switched from Titleist’s Pro V1 to the TaylorMade TP5x
He was hitting the TP5 indoors in the UK just after New Year. But it wasn’t until January that he started testing the TP5 and TP5x; he had some issues with the weather in the UK, so it wasn’t until we got to Dubai that he got to dissect every difference between the TaylorMade balls and his previous Titleist Pro V1.
TaylorMade balls are the best-kept secret on tour. I’ve been looking at players using TaylorMade golf balls for a long time and the performance is second to none. But what I noticed more than anything with Tommy was the performance in the long irons, 3-wood and driver.
For players like Tommy, it’s all about very specific, controllable, reliable distances. As an equipment free agent, he played a combination set of irons, and that’s because he looked to cover off very specific yardages. But I’ve always felt that, because he’s such a good ball striker, if Tommy could play a full set of the same irons it would make the game simpler, especially in high-pressure situations. The new ball helped us do that.
The launch angle went up a window. As we tested the ball and got to the 5-iron and 4-iron, there was a higher launch which was exactly what Tommy was trying to achieve by using a more cavity-back long iron. He thought the iron would add a little speed and launch, but we achieved what he was looking for through the ball. All of a sudden he was hitting his long irons four or five yards further, and that’s when things got really serious.
He hit hundreds of shots in testing… and the ball didn’t fail. I’ve been lucky enough to work with Rory McIlroy (he put the new TP5x in play as soon as it was available), Sergio Garcia and other top players on the ball, and Tommy gave very similar feedback. That breeds confidence in the product.
Tommy tested the ball every 10 yards from the greenside and in bunkers all the way back to 130 yards. I was more of a spectator when it came to the short game! Tommy, his short game coach and caddie, chatted constantly about how the ball performed from every situation, every lie. There were no question marks, but the acid test was on the course. All of a sudden there are crosswinds and different lies. So when the weather turned in Abu Dhabi on Thursday morning (Tommy’s first event with his new ball), the opening two days were the ultimate test.
We tested the ball for four days. When you have 14 clubs in your bag it’s a lot of work to fit a new ball, as each club might need tweaking to get the ball to perform in the way you want – and remember, Tommy’s previous ball was completely dialled into his equipment. We got to a point where he’d seen how the TP5x gave the higher launch with the long irons, he’d done some short game work and he’d seen more consistent carry distances with his 6- and 7-irons. We said that if we were making the decision based on the launch, spin and carry distance consistency of full swings, the TP5x felt like the best fit.
Before deciding which ball to play, Tommy went very deep trying to find a trade-off. It’s natural to think that if you’re gaining with the driver and the longs irons, where’s the trade-off? And he really tried to find it!
But there wasn’t one, which was brilliant for him. He messaged me throughout the three weeks in the Middle East to say how well the ball was performing.
There’s no gun to Tommy’s head saying he must play this ball. Our team puts so much into all our products and it’s the tour team’s job to get them performing for the best players. You won’t find a player who’ll agree to switch sponsors and be under pressure from day one to put all of their equipment in play. Our aim is always for the player to feel like they’re giving something up by not playing our products.
WITB Tommy Fleetwood: Fitting his driver
I’ve worked with Tommy for years, and he’s played TaylorMade drivers a lot. He’s had a lot of success with them, too. As he left our photoshoot last November he took a SIM2 with him. I’d spent some time getting initial data with him, which I could take away and see the differences between our two new models and his previous Titleist TSi3. I sent him some options over Christmas, along with a few different shaft options, while he was in his off-season. He was really excited about the switch; it was like a fresh start for him.
Go too long and Tommy loses ball speed. He plays a very specific face angle and very low loft on his driver. The key to Tommy driving well is getting the face angle absolutely spot-on, and then trying to give him as much loft as he can get away with (before it becomes too spinny). We’ve identified 7.75° to 8° as the mark where he drives the ball best. His shaft is 44.75in, which is quite short.
Within a couple of days we had dialled in a SIM2 and SIM2 Max, and he could play either. Once we’d worked out the face angle, there were a couple of shaft options to explore, just so Tommy could see he wasn’t giving anything up in terms of ball speed. He used the SIM2 Max in Abu Dhabi and brought the experience from there to Dubai, where we worked together again. Abu Dhabi is the acid test of driving – lots of crosswinds, dog-legs, long carries and plenty of water – so you find out quickly what a product is doing under tournament conditions. In Dubai, he switched to the SIM2 and looked really comfortable. His attitude was very much that he’d turned a corner and found something really good.
On tour we can set either driver up with no restrictions. The sole weight in the SIM2 Max is a little different to SIM2. After Abu Dhabi Tommy said, “If I’m to play the Max it needs to be set up in a way so I don’t feel like I’m likely to miss in a certain direction”. That’s when the SIM2 became the driver he felt he controlled a little better, especially when he teed shots up a little more or gripped down the shaft.
The golf course is the office, but blink and the day is over. Those early-season test sessions, call it warm weather training, they’re really intense. It’s 6am starts and we don’t finish until sunset. Tommy will have his coach, caddie, short game coach and putting coach there and we all have our jobs to do. He spends hours on the putting green, often with Phil Kenyon. He never finishes any day without walking off the course, whether it’s having played six, nine or 12 holes. Of the 20 days I spent in the Middle East (not just with Tommy, but TaylorMade’s other tour staff too), I had one afternoon off.
WITB Tommy Fleetwood: Fitting his fairway woods
Ending up in the SIM2 Titanium was actually a mistake. Tommy thought he’d be playing the SIM2 Max fairways – they were the only two clubs he left the marketing shoot with in November, which made it to the Middle East with him. But while playing a few holes one afternoon, he’d accidentally left the SIM2 Titanium in the bag, so he used them, and loved them. We explored a few different lofts, but that’s all we did on the fairways.
I wanted to start with as clean a set of matched golf clubs as possible. I wanted to match the SIM2 5-wood to the 3-wood. By starting with very orthodox lie angles, shafts, heads and lofts, we could much more easily move in either direction.
Good players manipulate a 5-wood to cover off yardage gaps. Tommy carries a 3-wood 270 yards, and if he needs to hit it further he can, which is phenomenal. But because his longest iron is a 4-iron, there’s a huge gap to cover off between the two.
We wanted a club to cover 240-260 and help Tommy particularly hit the shorter end of those numbers. So we set out to find a club that goes 250, with good launch and spin, and then see how easy covering off the distance gap becomes. The smaller-headed SIM2 Titanium was perfect, as with its speed consistency (it’s not aimed at flat-out distance like the SIM2 Max), it lends itself to shot-making.
We optimised the loft, shaft, lie and launch for a 250-yard shot and then let Tommy take over for the shorter and longer yardages.
He hits a 7-wood with the dispersion of a pitching wedge. The 5-wood is a key club for Tommy – look at the top players and when they win, the stat that jumps out is par 5 scoring. I think Tommy’s par 5 scoring will only get better. Depending on the course, he has a SIM2 Max 7-wood option. He normally carries four wedges, but when required he can drop a wedge and carry driver, 3-wood, 5- and 7- like he did in Dubai (with three wedges). It’s all about scoring and how he sees the course playing. For the Open we’ll work on a 2-iron option (he’s played a GAPR before) for him.
WITB Tommy Fleetwood: Fitting his TaylorMade TF irons
Tommy tested Titleist, Callaway and Srixon irons. It was a conscious decision for Tommy to come out of his Nikes. He’s a world top 10 player and you need service of product, especially when things go wrong and you damage a club and so on. He decided to test each manufacturer’s options. Each brand presented what they thought would be a good fit for him. When we got our slot with him, the new Tiger Woods blade (P7TW) were in development and felt like the logical choice. It was all about timing.
I asked TaylorMade HQ really nicely if we could get Tommy a set; in fact I had to beg for a set, even though he was very high on our list of players we wanted to work with. In the end I said it’s now or never. The support I got internally was exceptional.
I’d done my homework, I had Tommy’s specs. But someone was watching down on us when we started hitting the irons. The testing was very much like the ball testing. Day one ran into day two, which ran into day three, and nothing failed. All of a sudden the next tournament came around and he turned up with the TF Proto irons in his bag, I’ll never forget that. The TF Proto (Tommy Fleetwood) was our way of making them unique to him, and offering a higher level of service to a player we have a lot of respect for. Tiger really enjoys Tommy’s company, and Tommy has the utmost respect for his idol. Essentially, his TF Proto irons are exactly the same as Tiger’s, but with a different name.
His caddie (Ian Finnis) is exceptional with equipment. He’s such an enthusiast and benefit to Tommy. There was one day we were testing irons and he’s standing there covering his eyes so he could focus on hearing the strike and turf interaction, to see if there was any difference. Then he’d put his fingers in his ears so he could only see the ball flight. He was like: “I seriously can’t tell the difference”. Playing a full set of irons will help Tommy going forward; for a couple of years he’s only had four matching irons (TaylorMade 6, 7, 8 and 9, with Srixon long irons).
Take away strike and turf interaction and carry numbers are extremely important. To get really consistent carry you need consistent launch and spin so his ball flight doesn’t move much at all. If anything, his stock shot is fractionally right to left (he can move it both ways), with healthy spin. That means no hint of a hot ball flight; it’s actually a rising flight in the correct launch window, until the shot reaches its peak. In the shorter irons Tommy launches shots a window higher, but the peak height stays the same so the land angle is excellent. Watch him play in any conditions and he’s always pin high, he has great distance control.
WITB Tommy Fleetwood: Fitting his wedges
You’re putting doubts in a player’s mind if you change wedge and ball at the same time. You’ve got to pick your battles (Tommy hasn’t yet moved over to play TaylorMade wedges) and when we saw what the ball was doing for him, that meant everything to me. If you start introducing another variable, a player isn’t sure if any difference is coming from the ball or the wedge. You can’t sell a player on a new ball when you’re changing wedges and ball at the same time. I made the call to take it one step at a time.
His stats show he can improve from 120-135 yards. He used a 48° wedge that was a specialist head and a shaft matched to his wedges, not his irons. And I thought that’s a club he hits a lot of full swing shots with, so it felt like a pitching wedge matched to his irons would make more sense. It’s been a really good switch for him, and he feels more equipped and a more complete player from those distances.
Finding the ideal wedges will be a long process with Tommy. His coach has a lot of good insight into what is right for Tommy Fleetwood. We’ll get him and his team out to our HQ in Carlsbad where we’ve got our full wedge team. I think we’ll need to make wedges that are very specific to Tommy, and that takes time. He is a very high spinner of the ball, and my gut feel is that he will go more towards a traditional-shaped wedge rather than the Hi-Toe. Put Hi-Toe in the hands of an average spinner and spin can go through the roof. Tommy doesn’t need that. A traditional shape with focus on the sole shaping to complement Tommy’s delivery is likely to be the answer.
WITB Tommy Fleetwood: Finding the right putter
Tommy Fleetwood uses the new TaylorMade TP Collection Bandon Hydro Blast putter. The tour-inspired double wing design helps frame the ball at address and encourages forgiveness via optimised perimeter weighting. With sharp geometric lines that reflect the technical precision of this classically made mallet, the Bandon was the first TP Hydro Blast model to appear on Tour.
Tommy first put the L-neck version in the bag at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina, after spending hours with oyr Tour team and testing numerous configurations.
He has a long history of using blade putters, and because this model features 22° of toe hang, it made the transition to a mallet-style head seamless.
For Tommy, the centeredness of strike was a big reason for his switch to the Bandon,
The heel-side miss is something he battled with his blade, and we’ve helped him develop a little more consistency with this one. Beyond that, he’s very comfortable with the shape of the putter and has said that it helps him with alignment
The Bandon 3 is the second iteration of this model. It features a short slant hosel with increased toe hang (32°) for even more blade-like performance within a mallet design.

Tiger Woods bets that make sense at PGA Championship
Golfbet News
Change Text Size
LOUISVILLE, KY. – It’s been 24 years since Tiger Woods had an epic battle with Bob May at the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, the site he returns to take on the best of the best in search of another Wanamaker Trophy.
The four-time PGA Championship winner (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007) hasn’t played since the Masters where he kept his incredible cut streak alive for a 24th straight year before ultimately fading to finish last of those making the weekend.
While most in the world of sport would love nothing more than to see Woods contend, the reality is Valhalla is a beast of a course not really suited to his now-ailing body. Hence, he’s a +20000 longshot to win according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
“My body's okay," Woods said from Valhalla. "It is what it is. I wish my game was a little bit sharper. Again, I don't have a lot of competitive reps, so I am having to rely on my practice sessions and getting stuff done either at home or here on-site.
“But at the end of the day, I need to be ready mentally and physically come Thursday, and these days of practicing, eating on the golf course, that's one of the reasons I came up here on Sunday was to knock off some of the work that I have to do in charting greens, get all that stuff done early, so I can focus on literally playing and plotting my way around.”
What's in Tiger Woods' golf bag?
Given Woods’ popularity, there are still a plethora of betting options available on the 15-time major champion. But which are realistic – and which are in the realms of fantasy? Let’s take a look and find the hidden gems.
At BetMGM, to go with his +20000 outright price, oddsmakers have Woods at +2800 for a Top 5, +1400 for a Top 10, +600 for a Top 20 and +200 for a Top 40.
Woods has four wins, nine career top-10s, 10 career Top-20s and 17 Top-40s from his 22 starts at the PGA Championship. Despite those stellar numbers, I would not be advocating any of these bets. Even if Woods is able to make the cut, he has to maintain his efforts through four rounds. A tough ask, even he admits. He last made a PGA cut in 2022 at Southern Hills but withdrew over the weekend when his surgically repaired ankle flared up in cold and rainy conditions.
“I can still hit shots," Woods said. "It's getting around is more of the difficulty that I face day-to-day and the recovery of pushing myself either in practice or in competition days. You saw it at Augusta. I was there after two days and didn't do very well on the weekend."
Speaking of the cut, Woods is +140 to make the weekend, something he has done 18 times in 22 starts at the PGA Championship. He sits -190 to miss it. I’m loathed to admit it, but my feeling is this time, we won’t see Woods for the final two rounds.
Other tournament-long bets out there that I have no interest in pushing a serious bettor towards include FanDuel’s +950 to be bogey-free in any round or Woods at +10000 to make a hole-in-one and +20000 to have an albatross.
After getting stung at the Masters to the tune of +17500 for Woods to improve his 2023 Augusta National performance by exactly one shot each day, FanDuel traders have slashed the numbers for similar bets this time around.
For Tiger to repeat his 2014 Valhalla start of 74-74 is +6600 while the Improver option of him shooting exactly 73-73 is +5000. Neither now become worth considering. Nor are the ridiculous suggestions of wire-to-wire winner (+30000), winning by two shots or more (+20000), winning by three shots or more (+30000) or winning by four shots or more (+40000).
DraftKings has their own pie in the sky option of Woods breaking the course record 63 at +20000.
Now that we’ve got the unrealistic options out of the way, let’s look where we should be focused… on the bets that focus on a single round.
Back with BetMGM there are many options for Thursday’s opening round where Woods goes off the 10th tee at 8:04 a.m. ET playing with Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.
For starters, the 82-time PGA TOUR winner is +275 to beat both Scott (+120) and Bradley (+170) over the 18 holes. While I’m leaning towards the Australian favorite in this matchup, a small crack at him beating two players in one day is certainly smarter than him finishing high over four rounds.
The opening round specials I don’t like include for Woods to be bogey free (+2500), to make an eagle (+1000), to be first round leader (+12500), or first round top 5 (+2200) or top 10 (+1100).
But I could be enticed into the +115 for him to birdie one of the four (albeit tough) par-3s. You can also get +188 on him starting his tournament with a birdie on the par-5 10 th . A 590-yard monster, it won’t be easy, but certainly possible. Having him birdie all three par-5s, at +700, might be a stretch, though.
I expect Woods will make errors, but I’d like to think he can still wow us with birdies as well. BetMGM has him at -105 to make four or more birdies/eagles in the round. I was thinking that three birdies might be the number, but hoping for one more is certainly a bet that could be fun to track on Thursday.
The -110 to shoot 72 or lower isn’t juicy enough for me to bite. At the end of the day, we should be happy he’s still in the field given the turmoil his body has been through.
FanDuel already has some hole-by-hole betting up and running, with his opening three holes look as follows:
- Round 1, Hole 10 Score: Par -150; Birdie or better +185; Bogey or worse +500
- Round 1, Hole 11 score: Par -250, Bogey or worse +320, Birdie or better +550
- Round 1, Hole 12 score: Par -150, Bogey or worse +160; Birdie or better +750
The 10th in a 590-yard par-5, the 11th a 211-yard par-3 and the 12th a 494-yard par-4. Not to be a downer, but the value might be picking one of the tough holes as a bogey option.
At DraftKings, the breakdown over the opening three holes reverts to Woods against his playing partners.
- Hole 10 winner: Woods +165, Scott +165, Bradley +165
- Hole 11 Winner: Scott +155, Bradley +160, Woods +170
- Hole 12 winner: Scott +155, Bradley +160, Woods +180
Woods’ long-iron game has always been strong. Could he best the other two on the par-3 11th? That would be my fun play.
Woods is +145 to beat Scott (-185) in the opening round or +120 to beat Bradley (-145). Again, while unlikely, perhaps a small outlay on one of these head-to-head battles at plus money is where you can add some entertainment to your viewing.
Whether you bet on Woods or not, remember to just enjoy the fact we are still seeing him compete on the highest stage. He might not be the man from 24 years ago, but some magic still lies within. And these days, just getting a glimpse of that is the real return.
