Captain Jean-Luc Picard has given us many things . His intelligence. His tolerance. His empathy. And a starship full of great memes.  

Yes, even though Star Trek: The Next Generation ended 25 years ago Thursday, Patrick Stewart's face still regularly pops up online. From the galactically catchy Picard Song to the iconic Picard facepalm, the good captain is an online hero. Annoyed Picard

Annoyed Picard is an image meme taken from the third season episode Ménage à Troi, showing a screengrab of noted theatrical actor Patrick Stewart reciting Shakespeare on the bridge of the Enterprise. But the captioned captain meme, which took off in 2012, is used to express exasperated rhetorical questions. With cursing. Lots of cursing.

In 2018, the meme mutated again to point out when someone says something cringeworthy, posted with the caption "Bro! You just posted cringe! You are going to loose subscriber!"

Jean-Luc Picard is nowhere near Captain Kirk in the womanizing stakes, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a naughty side under that form-fitting red uniform. Saucy Picard is just one of the many screengrabs of Patrick Stewart showing his playful side.

While we're on the subject of Patrick Stewart's playful side, the actor can be seen on the season 5 DVD performing a soft-shoe shuffle around the bridge of the Enterprise as a tribute to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

Stewart's pleased-as-punch expression early in the song also gave rise to a meme when it was overlaid with the text "Full of win." Which this video certainly is.

One of the classic memes of all time. When humanity disappoints you more than words can say, all you can do is bury your face in your hand. When it happens online, there is the facepalm meme. And for those moments of ultimate stupidity, there is the supreme conjunction of hand meeting head: the Picard facepalm.

Picard covered his face with his hand when he was vexed to once again encounter the troublesome Q in season 3 episode Deja Q. The clip was uploaded to YouTube in 2007, and now the screengrab used to represent a facepalm moment is everywhere. It's been immortalized in memetic merchandise from T-shirts to statues . 30 Funny Memes That Prove Star Trek Is Better Than Star Wars

These hilarious memes prove something sci-fan fans have always known: that Star Trek is better than Star Wars.

Uh oh. There it is, friends. The can is open, and there are worms freaking everywhere.

You know how the Star Wars and Star Trek fandoms can be. You know how most fandoms can be, come to that. We just don’t seem to get the whole concept of live and let live. Do you remember the vicious console wars of the 90s, that pitted Mario and Sonic against each other? Friendships were won and lost and mothers’ weight problems were relentlessly mocked on the schoolyard, simply because somebody’s allegiance was different to yours.

Nothing’s changed at all in that regard, to listen to all of the Nintendrone, Sony Pony and such snark that goes on. Can’t we all just get along? Most forward into a glorious new utopia, where we’re all simply gamers and not judged by the systems we game on?

Well, no. No, we can’t. By the same token, can’t we appreciate both Star Trek and Star Wars equally? Again, no. Not usually.

You’d think, what with sharing a genre and all, that we wouldn’t have to get all mutually exclusive about this. That it’s totally acceptable to support both intergalactic dramas with Star in the title. Sadly, though, it’s not as simple as that.

Now, in terms of mainstream popularity, Star Wars pretty well has Scotty and his buddies beat. That’s all well and good, but you do not want to attract the wrath of Star Trek meme-makers. Just check out this hilarious Wars -trumping crop of memes.

30 The Classic Star Trek Joke

Now, as we all know, Star Wars has its own share of iconic catchphrases and such. We’ve got the "Force is strong with this one," "May the Force be with you,"  and other bits of beautiful wisdom from Yoda (do, or do not. There is no try). When it comes to legendary movie lines, we’ve got reams and reams of material to pick from right here.

Having said all of that, Star Trek only needs two words.

Captain’s Log is a line that, regardless of your familiarity with the franchise, you can immediately identify. You know that there’s a Shakespeare play/J.D from Scrubs soliloquy coming up. Sometimes, if you’re powerful and super cool enough, a meager two words are all you need.

Even Admiral Ackbar’s beloved, meme-tastic It’s a trap! can’t match that.

29 When Snarky Spock Strikes

As fans of the more recent Star Wars movies will have noticed, the franchise has been experiencing a subtle shift in sense of humor. There has always been the occasional gag thrown in, just to cleanse the palette from all of the intense space drama action, granted. Lately, though, more and more visual jokes and such have been creeping in there. The way that Marvel movies like to do things.

By comparison, then, you may think that Wars has Trek beaten in that sense. That the latter would be quite po-faced and super serious in that regard; like the elderly, moth-ball smelling great Vulcan aunt that disapproves of her wayward space great nephew’s antics.

Don’t be fooled, though, because Star Trek can get down and snarky with the best of them. Spock’s no stand-up, but when he throws the shade, he goes all the way.

28 When Non-Fans Just Don't Get It

Now, this is exactly what you have to be careful of. As we’ve already seen, people do tend to support one franchise over the other. You can, of course, totally dig both equally, and rise above the flame wars and petty arguments that tend to arise. You can do that, of course you can, but then you’re being far too reasonable and sensible for the internet.

We don’t take kindly to that sort of thing online, buddy boy.

Whatever your sci-fi franchise preferences may be, you’re totally welcome to them. Just don’t vilify those who don’t share them. As tempting as that always seems to be, come on, people. It’s 2018. Let’s stop going all high and mighty clichéd PC gamer on everybody. Enough already.

27 When Worf Brings A Welcome Touch Of Sophistication To Proceedings

Worf, portrayed by Michael Dorn, has carved himself quite a place in Star Trek legend. The franchise’s first Klingon main character, he has since gone on to appear in more episodes than any other character.

Why the popularity? Because he’s the man, that’s why. There he is, on the bridge, defying every cheesy old stereotype about the Klingons you care to throw at him.

They’re a brutal, warlike race, you say? Not around here they aren’t, friend. That is to say, not always. Worf’s an enigma, a complex, beautiful, flawed being like the rest of us. He’s the kind of dude who’ll tear your head right off and then (apparently) sit and drink tea with his pinky finger sticking out, reflecting on the harsh reality of this life of ours. Maybe he’ll write a poem or two. We just don’t know.

26 When You Leave The Ewoks To Live Long And Prosper In Peace

Now, see, there are all sorts of reasons you might prefer one franchise over the other. Maybe the most practical of things. You might prefer the storylines, say, or the writing may appeal more in one franchise over the other. It might also be the flashy action of Star Wars that draws you in, or the very opposite may be true of Star Trek . Different strokes, that’s what it’s all about.

Maybe it’ll be something deeper than that, though. The primary characters’ reactions to the creatures they encounter on their travels, for instance. The Enterprise crew are all about innocent discovery and scientific curiosity, as pictured here, while the Star Wars guys prefer…

The message of which could probably be described as mixed, at best.

25 When Star Trek Just Tells It Like It Darn Well Is

Oftentimes, with the far-reaching, contradictory and confusing storylines of space dramas, we can find ourselves getting totally darn lost. Losing track of it all, and struggling to empathize with characters. That happens. When they’re huge, spider-like beasts with eighteen eyeballs, who live on an imaginary planet in the year eight trillion and two, we lose hold of our frame of reference somehow.

It’s all about being grounded in reality, friends.

That’s key to this particular Star Trek meme. It’s completely relatable. However far forwards in time you are, wherever you are in whichever galaxy, snarky jokes about hospital food can and will always remain. I can dig that. I really can.  The plots of these things can go from zero to batpoop crazy in a heartbeat, after all.

24 When Picard Is Unimpressed By Your 'Disney' Talk

Now, I’ll admit, I’m a little conflicted here. I’m not quite certain where I stand.

I see two different possibilities, both of which are obscured somewhat by Captain Jean Luc Picard’s inscrutable, charismatic face. are we inwardly envious that Disney hopped onto the Star Wars bandwagon and allied themselves with the franchise, or are we contemptuously dismissing the whole idea as beneath us? I just do not know.

Either way, it’s probably immaterial. What really matters here is that this is freaking hilarious. That’s the major takeaway from this meme. Picard, as we know, isn’t one to get all excitable and animated. By the same token, though, he’s no super stoic Spock, either. Which is something to be grateful for, because it means we’re sometimes treated to facial expressions like the one in the bottom right panel there.

23 When You Can Pull Off Amazing Puntastic Jokes Like This...

Ah, yes. Now, this, I can get on board with.

Often, here on the web, the unnecessarily picky correction squad will ruin your whole day. You know the sort. The people who’ll instantly drop a post correcting your grammar or other typos. The people who’ll see the slightest error in a quotation or fact that you state, and land on it like a sumo wrestler jumping from a fifth storey window onto a grape.

These are the persnickety people who knew exactly what you meant, but will mess with you anyway. Generally, I’m against that sort of thing, but sometimes, beautiful things are born from simple typos.

This, I’m sure we can all agree, is one of those times. Now, that’s a spin-off I’d like to see.

22 ...And Also Like This

I’ll admit, with that last one, I thought I’d seen it all. I thought that a world where Tony Stark takes a wrong turn and ends up on the Enterprise was… well, darn far enough. As far as questionable spin-offs go, this little doozy had Joey (remember how vomit-inducingly terrible that was, coming in the wake of Friends ?) written all over it.

Right when I was about done with everything, Dwayne ‘The Spock’ Johnson rode into town. At this point, we’re all familiar with the memes. The way that anything that rhymes with ‘Rock’ is fair game. It’s a cheap but brilliant shot, usually, but in this case, I think they’re really on to something.

Why not make this a thing? After all, Good old Dwayne’s been in just about everything else lately.

21 When A Star Wars Fan Tries To Get You Down

Here it is again, rearing its ugly, judgmental space-head.

In a way, I guess it’s natural. After all, here on the internet these days, everything’s all about popularity. About attention. About likes, shares, retweets, comments and adoring heart emojis on your Instagram selfies.

Life is a popularity contest online.

When you ally yourself with something, then, it becomes part of your self-image. If anybody questions your taste, in anything from pizza toppings to movies or TV shows, you’ve got to fight back. You’ve got to leap, jaguar-like, on any opinion that differs from your own, however reasonable or harmless it may seem.

Are showers better than baths? Are they really? Not in my freaking world, they aren’t. Stop that entirely reasonable water usage talk.

20 When It All Gets A Little Ridiculous

This is what the anonymity of the internet does to some of us, sadly. It can bring out the worst in people. When you’re safe there, hiding cosy behind your username, you think you’ve got carte blanche to get all up in everyone’s business. To be the best d-bag you can be. Some transcend this kind of pettiness, and others grasp the opportunity with both hands and go right at it.

In the case of two ‘rival’ sci-fi franchises, you tend to be able to dig a little deeper than usual. There are all kinds of scientific issues, and questions of realism, that you can dig up to compete over. This, right here, tends to be a popular one.

This is the sort of thing some of us lose sleep over.

19 When Jedis Have Nothing On The Star Trek Crew

Now, of course, this one’s endlessly debatable. As we’ve seen in the more recent Star Wars movies (which you may not have seen yet, so I’m not going to be too explicit here), the Jedis have some darn fancy tricks up their sleeves. Even back in the days of the original trilogy, Darth Vader and other high-ranking members of the Dark Side could pull some serious stuff. Force Lightning? That little thumb-and-finger choking motion Vader could do? This was darn cool stuff, there’s no denying.

Even the good guys had some pretty cool powers.

The life of a Jedi trainee, on the other hand, isn’t the most exciting. Granted, levitating rocks and such is quite neat, by us mere mortals’ standards, but over in Star Trek , they know what’s up.

Nice reality you have there. It’d be a shame if somebody… warped it.

18 When YOUR Franchise's Hapless Henchmen Are Much More Useless Than The Stormtroopers

As Star Trek fans will know, the series often utilizes an unfortunate range of stock characters, informally known as Redshirts. These background extras are recognized by two primary traits: their red Starfleet uniforms, and the fact that their life expectancy usually extends about as far as the commercial break.

Largely, this is due to an amazing phenomenon known as plot armour. This comes about because you want to convey that the main characters are in peril, but you can’t actually write them a horrific end yet because they’re too important to the plot. This is an issue across all manner of TV shows, movies and books, of course, but Star Trek has an elegant solution: wipe out the Redshirts.

It’s a thankless job, but somebody’s got to do it.

17 ...Or Maybe The Stormtroopers Are Worse After All

So, yes. The Redshirts have a mortality rate unmatched since the super grim days of the Black Plague. Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise has its own crew of hapless henchmen: the Stormtroopers.

As we also know, these guys have an unfortunate reputation. They’re supposed to be the Empire’s military arm, striking fear into the hearts of victims wherever they go. Instead, wherever they go, their victims tend to say things like, oh, it’s fine, it’s just those guys. They couldn’t hit a huge darn AT-AT’s butt with those blasters.

It’s just not the message you want to give off.

Again, though, a lot of this is due to our old friend plot armour. If they had any semblance of aiming ability, the whole franchise would’ve abruptly ended during Luke and Han’s rescue of Leia in A New Hope .

16 When Star Trek And Star Wars Are Definitely Not The Same Thing

Uh oh. It was just inevitable that this one was going to crop up sooner or later. I have to say, though, I hadn’t quite mentally prepared myself for it.

You see, this is a real bugaboo of mine.

This is ignorance in its purest form.

It’s nobody’s fault, granted, but it’s still the sort of thing that really gets to fans. Like a hardened PlayStation gamer whose mama thinks that PS4 and Xbox One are the same thing.

There are similarities for the casual observer, of course. If you’ve never gamed in your life, how are you to tell one chunky console from another? How are you to tell one spacestastic franchise from another, either?

I’m not judging anybody, you understand. All I’m saying is, where’s freaking Scotty to beam me up?

15 When Luke Skywalker Takes The News Super Hard

First up, we’ve got to cut the poor soul some slack here. After all, Luke Skywalker had it pretty darn hard. That unfortunate business with his aunt and uncle, being rapidly drawn into a huge intergalactic conflict that was way beyond him, trying to square with his Jedi destiny, all those family issues... it’s not been an easy run for the poor guy.

As such, Star Trek fans, you could’ve been a little more considerate here. You know, introduced the idea gradually, subtly, so as to spare his feeling a little. Sadly, nope, it was not to be.

As though poor old Luke wasn’t having enough of an existential crisis at this point, Darth lent in and hit him with a second bombshell. Apparently. Harsh times indeed.

14 When It's All That Darn Jar Jar Binks' Fault

So, as we’ve covered pretty extensively already, people do tend to feel some kind of way about their fandoms. It’s always a little odd to me that somebody else’s opinion can be seen as a threat to your own in this regard, but there it is. Here on the web, if you say that you don’t like Harry Potter , for instance, Potterheads will respond like you’ve just personally roundhouse kicked their grandmas in the face.

There are certain things that even the most ardent of Star Wars fans will have to concede, though.

Mainly, the fact that Jar Jar Binks is a garbage monster.

To this day, there has never been a single documented case of anybody liking this character.

At first glance, I didn’t believe this guy could be as annoying as he looked. Then he opened his mouth.

13 When Star Trek Has The Edge In Predicting The Future

If you’re a fan of the sci-fi writers of the eighties and nineties, you’ll have noticed that… well, they were a little off the mark. To hear a lot of popular novelists and short story writers tell it, we should be living in a very different world right now.

Fancy flying bubble-cars a la The Jetsons , hoverboards, teleportation and much more should be a thing right now. What do we have instead? Precious darn little, that’s what. McDonald’s don’t even deliver yet.

Surprisingly, though, Star Trek ’s predictions have been completely on point over the years. The key, by the looks of it, was not being too outlandish about it all. It’s a little thing I like to call The Simpsons Effect, when your predictions are a little too accurate.

12 When J.J. Abrams Takes Over Both Franchises

You know what, J.J.? I admire your ambition, I really do. This is the sort of go-getter attitude we could all use a little more of. The kind of spirit you need to be able to say, nuts to it. One epic space drama franchise just doesn’t cut it for me. I want to get in on Star Wars as well.

Well, no. Of course, it wasn’t. It’s all about that money.

The Star Trek and Mission Impossible III director signed up for Star Wars: The Force Awakens , making all kinds of fans feel some kind of way in the process. Was this act, in some small way, an attempt by J..J. (the second J stands for Just Lens Flare Out The Wazzoo) to unite the two bickering fanbases?

11 When You Don't Let A Little Thing Like Continuity Hold You Back

So, as I say, J.J. Abrams is a veteran of both rival franchises. He’s dipped his toes into the murky waters of Star Trek and Star Wars , and as any director will, he’s had his own indelible influence on the franchise in the process.

Legendary penchants for lens flare aside, what has this meant for these two iconic series as a whole? That really depends on who you ask. After all, this is an inevitable effect of directors, writers and such moving around.

In the earlier days of Superman, say, the guy’s powers were constantly being altered, increased and exaggerated upon. There was a time when he could only leap tall buildings in a single bound, until suddenly only full-on flight would do. When it comes to Star Trek and Star Wars ’ expanding universes, offshoots and side stories, it’s tough to say what’s important and what isn’t.

15 ... Dad?

Despite the dual presence of wizards, the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are very   different tales. Sure, both are epic fantasy stories about vanquishing evil, but other than that, there's not much the two have in common. In terms of the story, at least. When it comes to characters, there are just a  few  similarities. Gandalf and Dumbledore, for one. We mean, we get the appeal of wizened old wizards, but these two characters can sometimes seem like one in the same. And for another, Hagrid seems just a little bit too much like an inflated version of Gimli (very  inflated) . And of course, both tales have a resident pale semi-human who's up to no good. One of which looks suspiciously like the love child of the other. But hey, great minds think alike, and that includes slimy villain characters, apparently.

14 A wizard is  never  late

Man, we wish  we  were wizards. Not only would you be able to fly on brooms, do dishes with your wand, attend motherf**king Hogwarts and, depending on the wizarding universe,  respawn  as a White version of yourself (NOT like that— watch the movie, guys), you'd also be able to use the greatest excuse of all time whenever you happened to be late. In middle school, we could've dropped this little gem every time we "accidentally" stumbled into science class half past the start time. Sure, we probably would've landed ourselves in detention, but for the chance to stick it to our teachers with a Gandalf the Freaking Grey quote (his official title), even hours of detention in the dungeons with Snape would be worth it.

13 Nerd-vertising

Between the two of them, Lord Voldemort and Gandalf are whiter than the Republican Party. After his brawl with the Balrog, Gandalf the Grey's soul journeyed off to white shores and dawns that turned to silver glass (yeah, sounds pretty awesome to us, too), somehow absorbing the whiteness of the shores in the process and returning to Middle Earth as a respawned version of Gandalf, with white hair and a white robe (oh, and the power to vanquish Sarumon, the greatest wizard in Middle Earth). But if Gandalf is the White wizard, then Voldemort is the poster child for white. Everything about the dude seems reflective, from his pale skin to his shiny teeth. It's a bit ironic that they call him the Dark Lord.

12 The Weasley Twins, Middle Earth edition

Fantasy authors seem to have a thing for ginger twins. In J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, the twins manifested as two red-headed brothers with daddy issues from Gondor. And in J. K. Rowling's wizarding world, they took the form of the beloved Weasley twins. Although they may look alike, the two pairs of brothers couldn't be more different in terms of personality. Where the Weasley twins delight in practical jokes and light-heartedness, Boromir and Faramir embody a certain seriousness that only comes with having a bat sh*t freaking crazy steward for a father (like, the dude lit himself on fire and jumped off a giant cliff—it doesn't get much crazier than that, unless you pay attention to American politics, that is).

11 Gandalf better be here

For us nerds, it's hard not to hold out hope that the fantastical worlds we spent our childhoods pining over might be real. For The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe fans, this took the form of maniacally searching every wardrobe in sight for a secret portal to the mythical land of Narnia, and for Potterheads, it was hard not to check the mail every day after our 11th birthday, hoping, praying, that that fateful letter inviting us to attend Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry would finally arrive. We're okay with not getting chosen to fight to the death for the enjoyment of a crazed aristocracy (because, you know, that's f**king crazy), but if Gandalf doesn't show up to recruit us for the adventure of a lifetime when we hit 50, then we're gonna be pissed .

There is no shortage of reasons to love Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings . Between the magic, the epic battles and the loveable halflings (whether hobbits or house-elves), there's almost too much material to obsess over. And to top it all off? The strong AF female characters who kick ass all over the place. In J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, Eowyn defies the orders of the men around her and chooses her fate for herself, riding off to fight against Sauron and, as a result, bringing certain death to the Witch King. And in Harry Potter , Hermione is pretty much the heart, brains and brawn of our favourite wizarding trio's operations. And then there's Twilight. Well, let's do ourselves a favour and not go there. The meme speaks for itself.

9 You shall not pass... exams!

Few students make it through a final exam without this famous catchphrase of Gandalf's running through their head at least once. No matter how many hours of study you devoted to organic chemistry (AKA potions for muggles), when the silence falls across the exam hall, the pencils start scribbling and you realize 50 percent of your grade will be decided in the course of the next three hours, it's hard not to panic just a lil' bit. And that's  without  having had your much-needed time at the library interrupted by basilisks, Dementors and returned-from-the-dead Dark Lords. We really don't know how Harry and his friends were able to keep up with their classes, seeing as they were pretty much constantly off adventuring during the school year. But we have to say, we'd happily trade an A grade for the chance to visit the centaurs in the Forbidden Forest.

8 And we're going with you!

Throughout the entirety of The Lord Of The Rings , friendship and courage are constantly presented as the most important factors when facing adversity, from Legolas and Gimli's unlikely brotherhood to Merry and Pippin's brave-yet-often-foolish antics. And in this iconic scene, the power of friendship is shown in its full glory, with Sam wading into waters too deep for him (literally) in pursuit of his friend, unwilling to let him face evil on his own. Although most stories have read-between-the-lines messages about the power of friendship, usually the epics include at least one scene in which the subtleties are eschewed, with characters declaring outright their commitment to one another. In Harry Potter , this was when Ron and Hermione told Harry they'd be accompanying him in his flight from Hogwarts. But we could totally see them chasing a retreating Harry into a lake, like Sam did for Frodo. Ah, friendship. Gotta love it.

7 Missions of epic proportions

Some stories teach us lessons that stay with us forever.  Harry Potter is a tale of friendship and courage, showing us that light can shine through even on the darkest of days so long as we stick together and believe in ourselves and each other. In the realm of Middle Earth,  The Lord Of The Rings  teaches us the value of fellowship between men (and dwarves, and elves, and hobbits, and women), and that even the smallest of people can do great things. In a galaxy far, far away,  Star Wars  teaches us the value of bravery and courage in the face of evil (and not to make out with your own sister). And in the world of teen vampire romance,  Twilight  teaches us ... well, that it's fun to watch Edward sparkle.

6 3 movies, 17 Oscars

Although the many fantasy worlds in existence today are often compared and contrasted as equals, when it comes down to the critical reception, there's really no comparison. Don't get us wrong—we're serious Potterheads. We'd give our left arms for a chance to attend a Defence Against The Dark Arts class at Hogwarts. But when it comes to critical acclaim, epics like  Game Of Thrones  and  The Lord Of The Rings  pull ahead of the rest by  far . These fantasy tales are in the realm of  literature , pushing the limits of the fantasy genre and paving new paths for future authors. And they got lucky with their respective TV and film adaptations, with both the Game Of Thrones  show and  The Lord Of The Rings  movie trilogy meeting with wild success. So, although the plethora of fantasy worlds that have flooded the book stores are all entertaining in their own way, few can match up to the one that helped to pioneer the entire genre. One book to rule them all, if you will (well, three, but you get the point).

5 Dumbledore, ya noob

Although they may live in different universes, Dumbledore and Gandalf seem like wizarding brothers, sometimes. Both are wise AF, old AF and powerful AF. Plus, both wizards have long, magnificent beards that define the word "savage," and both have a tendency towards grey attire (well, at least Gandalf 1.0). However, there's one critical skill of Gandalf's that Dumbledore lacks: the respawn. After Gandalf the Grey dies fighting a fiery Balrog on a mountain top (just wizard things), he respawns as Gandalf the White. But after Dumbledore dies in  Harry Potter,  there is no Dumbledore the White come back from the dead in The Deathly Hallows  (despite our prayers).   No, the most we see of Dumbledore post-death is a painting and a Horcrux dream. But hey, we'll take what we can get.

4 Wrong catchphrase

Despite the accusations that some throw at J. K. Rowling, the stories of Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings are very different. We mean, it's kind of obvious. An epic fantasy tale about a secret society of wizards living amongst humans on Earth was not copied from a story about a war over a Ring. However, there are some characters who seem a little too close for comfort. Like Dumbledore and Gandalf. We mean, it's hard to go wrong with wizened old wizards who are epic AF, but these two seem to echo each other a little too closely, in the wizened, old, wizard and epic departments. Like, we're pretty sure audiences wouldn't bat an eye if Dumbledore were to drop a resounding, "You shall not pass!" in the middle of The Order Of The Phoenix .

3  You shall not compare

Sorry, Potterheads, but we're going there again—the Comparison That Shall Not Be Named. We love  Harry Potter  as much as the next Potterhead, but there's simply no comparing it to  The Lord Of The Rings . Yes, J. K. Rowling wrote an incredible story, but the depth of themes explored by J. R. R. Tolkien in The Hobbit  and The Lord Of The Rings  is unparalleled. And yes, J. K. Rowling wrote pretty detailed history of Harry Potter's wizarding world. But J. R. R. Tolkien wrote f**king  languages  for his story, adding an appendix that detailed every aspect of the history of Middle Earth imaginable! It just doesn't get better than that (with the possible exception of  Game Of Thrones , but that's a  whole  'nother issue).

2 You do not talk about fight club

In the world of fantasy, every story has at least one   epic, fate-deciding battle. And, true to their name, they're epic AF. In  The Lord Of The Rings , it's hard not to get chills watching the orcs march on Helm's Deep (and Gondor, and the Black Gate...they march a lot). And in  Harry Potter , the final battle at Hogwarts is pretty much one giant adrenaline rush. And although the superhero battles in Civil War  and  Batman V Superman  lack giant armies, they make up for it with giant arms, both of the limb and weapon variety. One punch from Superman or Captain America (or one tank missile from Iron Man) could do more to an opponent than an entire army of orcs. But then we have  Fight Club . Although it's a tad less epic, the final battle is no less entertaining. It kind of gives new meaning to fighting "single-handedly," eh?

1 Use the Force, Harry

Well, if this isn't cringeworthy, we don't know what is. To the muggles of the world, it seems that the subtleties that define each of the great fandoms of our time can sometimes blend into each other. We  get  the confusion between Star Trek and Star Wars.  They both take place in space, and to the ear that hasn't been fine-tuned by years of geekery in high school, the names sound pretty much identical.   And we even get the confusion over  Harry Potter  and  The Lord Of The Rings.  But  all four ? Nuh uh. No excuse. In what world do people confuse a space epic about intergalactic emperors with a story about a wizarding school?! We get it if you aren't jump-up-and-down-obsessed with these stories like we are, but the difference between  Star Trek  and  The Lord Of The Rings  should be basic knowledge. Like 2 + 2, guys.

She was the smartest witch of her generation, with an encyclopedic trove of information stored away in her big brain. In a way, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was when people discovered the true genius of Hermione.

A Fine Summary Of The Movie, Doge Style

It's safe to say that fans were pretty overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the various histories and laws that they were presented within the debut movie. The Iconic Exchange with Hagrid

As Harry grappled with what his real identity was, it was finally revealed to him in the cottage by the sea by none other than Hogwarts' own Rubeus Hagrid. This exchange between Harry and Hagrid was the foundation of their friendship and finally informed Harry of the reality regarding his parents.

It has been joked about and interpreted in many different ways, especially because of Robbie Coltrane's adorably enunciated delivery of his dialogue. This meme, posted on bookstr , pretty much sums up the vibe of their interaction perfectly.

A Rejected Friendship

Before Harry and Draco became mortal enemies, it's important to remember that Draco had offered him his hand in friendship, which Harry rejected, leading to years of animosity.

Harry's reasons for letting Malfoy down were noble, since he was nasty to Ron, but it's interesting to think about what their situation would have been if Harry had accepted Draco's offer in the first installment.

The Sorting Hat Conundrum

All the child actors performed well in Harry Potter , but Radcliffe's slightly dramatic acting was the best. Fans lean in both directions, with some feeling like Harry was a true Slytherin who diverted his destiny, and some thinking that the Hat would only put him in Gryffindor if he had the traits.

A Sassy Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore was left in charge of thousands of students at Hogwarts, but, the truth was, he cared for only one. Harry Potter was his priority, and other kids, like Draco Malfoy, hardly mattered to the great wizard who happened to be the headmaster of the school.

Even when Harry broke rules , he was pardoned and given a free pass, which wasn't something others enjoyed. Dumbledore's partiality has been a big joke for decades, and continues to be one. Harry's Curiosity Killed The Cat

Many fans wouldn't realize this at first glance, but Harry and his curiosity was what led Quirrell/Voldemort towards the Sorcerer's stone. Quirrell had been on the lookout for it but did not guess where it was hidden until Harry led the way.

It is possible that the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor would have put two and two together at some point, but Harry's shenanigans were a catalyst.

Poor Nicholas Flamel

Voldemort's biggest claim to fame was how he had managed to cheat death and become invincible, but that left poor Nicholas Flamel out. Flamel was the man who had created the Stone which granted unlimited life, and had also extended his own lifetime by centuries.

He was a quiet creator, but was the true kickstarter behind the events of the first book and movie.

He Had His Mother's Eyes

Another line that was ubiquitous in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone referred to the young wizard's resemblance to the great Lily Potter. His green eyes were the topic of conversation - but, funnily enough, Radcliffe did not have green eyes, ever.

The internet, more specifically TotalPotterhead on the Harry Potter wiki , posted a meme that managed to find some resemblance in the eyes between mother and son.

Dumbledore's Bias

Harry was only 11 years old when he killed Quirrell/ Voldemort. The Professor's life could not be saved when Voldemort left his body, but Dumbledore seemed to not care of the consequences.

He lauded Harry for his bravery and completely skimmed over the part where his adventure at the end of the year had led to the death of a man. Classic Dumbledore.

A Natural At Quidditch

One of the biggest moments in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was the discovery of his natural aptitude for Quidditch, which predictably came from his father who was also on the team. Harry may have struggled with enough on the academic and Voldemort front, but this came to him naturally.

He even had an upper hand on Hermione in this one, who was known for being an all-rounder. After feeling lost and confused, being a Seeker was what gave Harry the most joy in the first movie. The meme that had been posted on Memegenerator's (and now resides on Pinterest) really shows how great Harry was at the game, using Jay-Z's iconic tune.

Besides the trio and all their friends, Draco Malfoy was a notable nemesis who emerged in the first movie. Classist, racist, cruel, and a product of his upbringing, he had a few catchphrases that became his signatures.

If he was mad, his father would hear about it. If he hated someone, he called them a mudblood. At all other times, he seemed to be calling Harry by his last name, which became an instant hit because of how he enunciated it. The Kids Are Alright

One of the most laughable decisions in the movie was how often students were put in danger, and willingly, by all teachers. Detention could be lethal for most of them, and Harry's punishment was to go into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid to figure out which terrible creature was haunting the unicorns.

Considering it was Lord Voldemort who was drinking unicorn blood to sustain himself, this could have been the end of Harry, even though the Dark Lord was in a weakened state. It was teens against the evilest wizard of all time, and this meme, posted on onsizzle.com , demonstrates how odd it was to send kids into such a dangerous place.

The Final Fight Between Quirrell And Harry

This meme perfectly sums up, and with succinctness, the fated battle between Lord Voldemort, Quirrell, and Harry Potter. Since he got the scar, this was the first time Harry faced Voldemort, but in a different fashion since he was pasted to the back of the Professor's head.

The discovery of the Dark Lord in a trusted teacher was a shocking one for Harry, but he fought back valiantly and definitely defeated him for the second time in his life.

Infinity Points To Gryffindor

A tradition that Dumbledore set early on in the series was never letting Gryffindor lose the House Cup. No matter how many times Slytherin was in the lead, he had to find a way to give Gryffindor points at the last moment to turn the odds in their favor.

These reasons ranged from killing Quirrell , to showing bravery, to even standing up to their friends (which was Neville). Gryffindor's victory was a given, and meme-arsenalry's work of art depicts Dumbledore's eyes for only Gryffindor.
