Col du Tourmalet: The crowning climb of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes
An in-depth look at the iconic summit finish on stage 7 and its likely crucial role in the battle for yellow
In 2022 La Super Planche des Belles Filles was the crowning glory of the Tour de France Femmes and, while it was a challenging and exciting climb that had been home to some crucial moments in the men’s race, the depth of its place in the folklore of the French Grand Tour holds no comparison to the Col du Tourmalet.
It’s a mountain that even those with only a passing interest in the race for yellow know is synonymous with the event, its towering presence in the Pyrenees and the race history making it impossible to ignore.
While the 2022 reintroduction of the women's Tour de France – with much of the fanfare and mystique of the long-running July Grand Tour – helped elevate interest in the women’s side of the sport to a new level, the sheer presence of the 2,115-metre mountain pass has the potential to lift it to yet another.
The Col du Tourmalet is not just a beast of a climb, but a beast of a climb where very few will be unaware of just how tough it really is. There will be absolutely no room for doubt about the scale of the challenge the women’s peloton is taking on and every reason for viewers to be attuned to the gravity of the stage and in anticipation of an unforgettable cycling moment, carve out time in their calendar to make sure they don’t miss out.
The race route is missing Paris in 2023, partly due to the organisers' desire to take in different areas, including the iconic climb. But they've perhaps opted for something more crucial to the flavour of the Tour in adding the iconic mountain, which in clear weather provides a vantage point from one of the highest paved passes in the Pyrenees that makes it feel like the whole world is at your feet. Regardless of the view, that is exactly how the winner of stage 7 on July 29 is bound to feel.
The location
The Col du Tourmalet sits in the Pyrenees, a mountain range which straddles the Spanish border and is just about as far from Paris as you can get while still remaining in France. It will be the southernmost point of the 2023 edition of the race, which started in Clermont-Ferrand.
The Col du Tourmalet takes the Tour de France Femmes to 2,110 metres. The heights of the Pyrenean giant come straight after the more moderate altitude of the Col d’Aspin (12km at 6.5%), which commonly sees cows peacefully grazing roadside on the way to its peak at 1,490 metres when the race is not in full swing. After the descent of the Col d’Aspin, the route takes the race to Sainte Marie de Campan, where a turn in the road signals the climbing quickly begins all over again with 17km of the 90km stage 7 remaining.

There is an easing into the 17km ascent averaging 7.3%, almost enough to lull a rider into false optimism about just how hard what is to come will be, as the first five kilometres deliver gentler gradients averaging mainly from 4 to 5 percent but with one kilometre of respite at just 2.5%.
Then, however, the mountain starts digging in its heels, ramping up to 7, 8 and then 10% for the remainder of the first 10km. As the climb approaches La Mongie and beyond there is no letting up, with 9% and 10% gradients which may have many riders wishing that this stage in fact ended at the ski resort which has played host to a number of Tour de France stage finishes.
However, there is still at that point 5km left, though it's bound to feel like much more, and it is a stretch that could provide an opportunity to lay down a gap-opening move for some or just to keep the pedals turning in the hope of making it within the time cut for others. The gradient barely eases, holding at 9% or above on the exposed slopes above La Mongie until that final kilometre, when it dips to just 8.5% as the finish line and memorable iron statue approaches.
The end of the stage could also decide the final destination of the yellow jersey, which has been held by Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx) for the first six days.
The history
The Col du Tourmalet made its first appearance at the men’s Tour de France in 1910 when Octave Lapize, the first rider over the top, went onto win in Paris. Since then it has become the most used of the mountain passes, making it a climb inextricably linked with the race.
There have been three stage finishes on top of the climb, one in 1974, which was won by Jean-Pierre Danguillaume, and then in 2010 – the 100th anniversary of the climb’s first inclusion in the race. That was a fierce duel to a misty summit between Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador, with Schleck winning the stage but failing to dislodge Contador from yellow. Then in 2019 Thibaut Pinot took victory ahead of the yellow clad Julian Alaphilippe.
Of course the climb also featured in the final half of stage 6 in the 2023 edition , proving a decisive point with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) charging away from their overall rivals on the Tourmalet and opening the door for a two way battle on the finishing ascent to Cauterets-Cambasque.
The history of the climb, however, goes beyond the men’s racing with the Tour Féminin. It may not have been an official women’s Tour de France like was run from 1984 to 1989, but it delivered the women’s peloton onto many of the event's key climbs. The Tour Féminin finished on top of the Tourmalet in 1994, 1996 and 2000, with Lithuanians, Jolanta Polikeviciute and Edita Pucinskaite, winning the first and last while Italy’s Fabiana Luperini beat Jeannie Longo in 1996.
In a Cyclingnews article looking at the history of women’s stage racing in France Luperini recounted: “In 1996, I remember the finish at the top of the Tourmalet. My teammates got me back again [after a crash], we were more than 5 minutes behind from the group. They managed to bring me back to the group at the foot of the Tourmalet and although I was all sore and bleeding, I had to win to repay them for their work. I won at the top of Tourmalet and pulled on the yellow jersey.”
Luperini won the overall of the 12 stage race that year and, just as the Tourmalet was crucial in the battle for yellow then, it also is bound to be in 2023.
Potential impact
Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) claimed victory and stepped into yellow on stage 7 of the Tour de France Femmes in 2022 with its three category 1 climbs, the longest being the Grand Ballon (13.5km at 6.7%).
Then, even with the race sewn up, on stage 8 she went on the attack on La Super Planche des Belles Filles, a 7km long climb with an average gradient of 8.7% that would mark the end of the eight-day tour. The Dutchwoman was unquestionably a dominant force on every last one of the climbs, which has raised the question – will she be even more so over the longer and steeper Col du Tourmalet?
And of course it’s not just the Col du Tourmalet that’s going to lead to frayed edges among the peloton, as the preceding Col d’Aspin is no walk in the park either. That means that even though it is the shortest road stage of the race at 89.8km it will certainly be a hard day on the bike, and Van Vleuten has a reputation for reveling in those.
The Giro d’Italia Donne, where Van Vleuten swept to her fourth victory with a dominant performance, was also an impressive sign of her form coming into the race but one rider who is slated as her key rival, Demi Vollering (SD Worx), wasn’t in Italy. That meant it was a matter of waiting for the opening stages of the race in France to see just whether last year’s runner up looked ready to take the challenge to the rainbow clad defending champion.
Stage 4 brought an answer, and that answer was yes. The SD Worx rider pulled out a two-second gap to Van Vleuten on the short steep climb to the line, also grabbing another 6 seconds in time bonuses by securing second place. Vollering had struck the first blow and on top of that Van Vleuten’s accelerations also failed to shed other rivals like Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal QuickStep), Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek).
But on stage 5 Vollering was given a 20-second time penalty for drafting behind her SD Worx team car and she started stage 6 in seventh place overall. Kopecky leads Moolman Pasio by 53 seconds and defending champion Van Vleuten has moved up to third at 55 seconds. Longo Borghini is fourth on the same time and Niewiadoma fifth, also at 55 seconds.
With just one mountain stage in the 2023 eight-day Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift – and such a brutal one at that – there is no overstating just how crucial the Tourmalet stage is. There’s only so much ground that can be made up in the 22.6km stage 8 individual time trial the following day but it is hard to measure just how much could be lost on a bad day on the Tourmalet.

Exploring the mythical Col du Tourmalet ahead of historic Tour de France Femmes debut

When a Tour de France stage finished on the Col du Tourmalet in 2010, I decided to hike from the media center in La Mongie up to the top. I walked those last 4 kilometers of the col’s eastern side through a cold, misty drizzle, climbing through 1,125 feet (343 meters) to the 6,939 feet (2,115 meters) summit.
On the other side of the col, the Tour’s top two on GC, Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador, were fighting a race-defining duel that I was listening to on Radio Tour. Schleck finished first.
That day, the road on the eastern side—the same side that the world’s best women racers will be climbing on Saturday in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift—was quiet. I felt the stillness of the mountain, passing the occasional spectator and avoiding the rivulets angling across the switchbacks.
I was thinking back exactly 100 years to another cycling enthusiast walking this very section of the climb a month before it first witnessed the sound of bicycle tires crunching on what was then gravel and rocks. His name was Alphonse Steinès, a technical expert who reported directly to the organizer of the Tour de France, Henri Desgrange.
To reconnoiter the Tourmalet, which would be the high point of what was the event’s first-ever sortie into the Pyrénées, Steinès had paid a driver to take him as far up the road as his spluttering car could go. The car was stopped by thick snow about 3 kilometers from the top.
History differs on what happened next, but this is perhaps the most accurate account, one that I helped compile with my first magazine editor, J. B. Wadley, 50 years ago.
“Steinès sent the car back, instructing the driver to take the low circular route and meet him on the other side. He would walk. In the growing darkness, he was guided for an hour by a shepherd boy, who refused to go any farther, being afraid of the brown bears.
“In the full night, cursing, praying, sinking deep in the snow yet miraculously missing the precipices— from which there would have been no return—Steinès, wearing just street shoes, groped his way to the summit.
“On the descent, he cautiously felt his way step by step until he came to the bed of a creek that he could hear running beneath the snow. He followed it for an hour until he saw the lights of a village. In another hour he reached some houses. It was now 3 a.m., yet the 100 residents of Barèges were awake. The car driver had raised the alarm that a mad stranger was crossing the Tourmalet in the middle of the night.
“Steinès asked the locals what the Tourmalet pass was like when the snow cleared, ‘Just a mule track,’ he was told. Later, he sent a telegram to his boss Desgrange in Paris: ‘Crossed Tourmalet. Road usable and without snow.’ Luckily, the first crossing of the Tourmalet was made in dry weather.”
On stage 10 of that 1910 Tour, French racer Octave Lapize, alternately walking and riding, was the first man to pass between the snowbanks at the top, half a kilometer ahead of Gustave Garrigou—who was the only rider to pedal the whole 17 kilometers from valley to peak.
The Tourmalet was just the third of half a dozen climbs on that stage, with Lapize eventually winning in Bayonne after covering the 326 kilometers in 14 hours, 10 minutes. Since that first Pyrenean foray a century ago, the Tourmalet has been scaled 88 more times in Le Tour. It has also seen a few appearances by elite female racers in the various iterations of the women’s Tour….
In the second edition of the Tour de France Féminin of 1985, climbing the Tourmalet’s eastern side (the one being used this week), Italian star Maria Canins dropped race favorite Jeanne Longo, who had to zigzag up the steepest 11-percent grades. By the time she had descended through Barèges and scaled the switchback ascent to the finish at Luz-Ardiden, she was nine minutes behind Canins.
The Tour organizers stopped supporting a woman’s stage race in 1993, but a private French promoter Pierre Boué filled the vacant calendar slot with a two-week race, first called the Tour Cycliste Féminin and then La Grande Boucle Féminine. He featured mountaintop finishes on the Tourmalet in 1996 and 2000.
In 1996, the defending champion Fabiana Luperini, another Italian climber, caught back five minutes after a bad crash on stage 4, re-joined the peloton at the foot of the Tourmalet and despite being “sore and bleeding” put seven minutes into her rivals to take over the race leadership.
Then, on the Tourmalet in 2000, Lithuanian Edita Pučinskaitė rode away from the field with her Alfa Lum teammate, Joane Somarriba of Spain; they finished together, while Luperini was three minutes back in fifth.
Boué’s race soon experienced financial problems and the last edition of La Grande Boucle in 2009 covered just 306 kilometers in four stages.
Now, with the promotional might of Tour owner ASO behind her, race director Marion Rousse has made no secret of her intention to build on the enthusiasm generated by the Tour de France Femmes’ first edition. “The idea is to make a little bit more history with the race,” she said.

Finishing a stage atop the Tourmalet is a perfect way to key into that history. And the eastern approach (17.1 kilometers at 7.4 percent) is considered the toughest side. Its opening 4 kilometers average less than 4 percent, while the steepest grades come hallway up.
Just a few weeks ago, this is where Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar raced away from the field during the men’s Tour.
Describing the climb to the Official Tour Guide, former racer Hubert Arbes, one of Bernard Hinault’s teammates, who lives nearby, said, “The part I fear the most is 2 kilometers below La Mongie, where the road goes under some avalanche shelters. You’re exposed to the wind, the road is quite wide and it rises in a straight line at a 9.5 percent grade. By that point, you already have a lot of climbing in your legs and you still can’t see the summit—you have to avoid cracking mentally there.
“After La Mongie, there are still 4 tough kilometers to go, including two hairpins where you have to push harder to cope with 14 percent ramps. For me, the Tourmalet is all about morale. You have to be strong in your head and fight with your bike.”
We can only ponder who will conquer the Tourmalet this weekend. The Tour de France Femmes is delicately poised, with just one minute covering the six top climbers on GC. Defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten is the undoubted favorite after dominating the recent Giro d’Italia. But the Dutch veteran has a host of rivals, spearheaded by last year’s other podium finishers Demi Vollering of the Netherlands and Katia Niewiadoma of Poland. Also in the reckoning are Ashleigh Moolman of South Africa, Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy and Juliette Labous of France.

Ya la primera etapa pondrá en orden la general merced a una llegada en cuesta, si bien habrá mucho más desnivel al día siguiente camino de Mauriac y el auténtico eje de la carrera será la cuarta jornada, entre Cahors y Rodez . En terreno ideal para clasicómanas, el gran reto lo pondrá la distancia: nada menos que 177 kilómetros . Ninguna prueba del UCI Women's WorldTour, primera división del ciclismo femenino, ha llegado este año a esa longitud; incluso el Mundial se quedó en 164 km.

Superado ese maratón, dos previsibles sprints en Albi y Blagnac precederán al gran aliciente de esta edición de Le Tour Femmes: el estreno de los Pirineos, con final en alto en el Tourmalet previo paso por el Col d'Aspin . Se trata de los dos puertos más visitados por el Tour de Francia masculino, que ya ha hollado sus cimas 84 y 75 veces respectivamente y lo hará de nuevo en 2023. El Tourmalet ya escenificó historia del ciclismo femenino en el año 2000 al acoger un final en alto de la Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale , uno de los distintos equivalentes femeninos del Tour masculino que han existido a lo largo de la historia. Se anotó la victoria la lituana Edita Pučinskaitė llegando junto a la vasca Joane Somarriba, que se hizo con un maillot amarillo que llevaría hasta París en la que supuso la primera de sus tres victorias en dicha carrera.
Quedará tela por cortar en la octava y última etapa, contrarreloj individual de 22 kilómetros en Pau , la ciudad que escenificó las CRI del Tour de Francia y la Vuelta a España masculinas en 2019, mismo año en el cual acogió a La Course, prueba de un día de la cual brotó Le Tour Femmes. Necesariamente decisiva, la crono será una oportunidad ideal para que las rodadoras recuperen la renta que hayan abierto las escaladoras que se destaquen en el Tourmalet.
Más allá del recorrido, la otra gran novedad de Le Tour Femmes será la talla de los equipos, que pasarán de seis corredoras a siete de acuerdo con una disposición aprobada en septiembre por la UCI para las pruebas Women's WorldTour de al menos seis etapas, duración que igualarán o superarán la próxima campaña Le Tour Femmes, el Giro Donne, La Vuelta Femenina, la Vuelta a Escandinavia, el británico The Women's Tour y el neerlandés Simac Ladies Tour. Asimismo, los equipos tendrán derecho a circular con dos coches en caravana de carrera, en lugar de uno .
Se trata de dos reivindicaciones de los equipos más potentes en términos de presupuesto, plantilla e infraestructura que, sin embargo, genera dudas por la evidente desigualdad de recursos entre escuadras incluso dentro de la primera división . El Tour de Francia femenino quiere seguir recolectando los fruto del éxito popular que tuvo el año pasado en su primera edición y en 2023 apuesta por la renovación, con la introducción de una contrarreloj, y mantener lo que funcionó, con un final en alto.
Si el año pasado fue en La Planche des Belles Filles , este año el protagonismo se lo llevará el Tourmalet , final de la penúltima etapa, según el recorrido presentado este jueves en París .

El Tour femenino comenzará el mismo día del final del masculino pero esta vez no lo hará en París , se irá hasta Clermont-Ferrand , en el corazón de Auvernia , con un perfil escarpado que marcará las primeras diferencias en la general desde el inicio.
Accidentado será también el recorrido de la segunda jornada, camino al sur, con pelea entre quienes opten a la general, antes de que en la tercera jornada cobren protagonismo las "sprinters".
La cuarta, con 2.400 de desnivel y final en Rodez , volverá a ser cuestión de escaladoras, mientras que en la quinta y la sexta se augura de nuevo una llegada masiva en Albi y Blagnac .
Será momento de guardar fuerzas para afrontar el ascenso al Tourmalet y sus 17 kilómetros al 7,3 % de desnivel , en una jornada de 90 kilómetros que también incluye la subida al col d'Aspin , con un total de 2.600 metros de desnivel positivo.
Si el año pasado la alta montaña, con subida a La Planche des Belles Filles , fue el veredicto final de la edición, en la que se impuso la neerlandesa Annemiek van Vleuten , del equipo Movistar , en esta ocasión será la contrarreloj.
Veintidós kilómetros entorno a Pau , en sentido inverso a la que los hombres completaron en el Tour de 2019 , con una cota en el medio, 1,8 kilómetros al 5 % de desnivel.
"Queremos explorar lo que eso supone para las ciclistas, que afronten todo tipo de dificultades", indicó Rousse .
Christian Prudhomme , que es responsable de ciclismo en la empresa organizadora del Tour , agregó que el recorrido de 2023 "es ante todo una experiencia".
Sabedor de la dificultad logística que supone organizar la salida de la prueba ciclista femenina el mismo día en el que acaba la masculina y lejos de París , Prudhomme no quiere cortar las alas al Tour de las mujeres .
"No podemos salir cada año de París , eso nos limita mucho a la hora de buscar los macizos. Este año apostamos por los Pirineos . Veremos qué sucede. Pero nuestra voluntad es que el Tour femenino se asiente, que dure muchos años", dijo.
La primera edición del año pasado, considera Prudhomme , fue "un éxito de público" tanto en las cunetas como en la televisión, un impulso que quieren seguir manteniendo.

Tour de Francia Femenino 2023 - previa etapa 7: jornada decisiva en el Col du Tourmalet
Etapa clave en la lucha por el maillot amarillo. Será una jornada vespertina muy corta en los Pirineos, tan solo 90 kilómetros, pero el pelotón femenino deberá afrontar más de 2.600 metros de desnivel acumulado y uno de los encadenados más repetidos en la historia del Tour de Francia, el Col d’Aspin y el Col du Tourmalet.

Las ascensiones al Col d’Aspin y al Col du Tourmalet forman parte de la identidad del Tour de Francia. Estos dos puertos situados en los Pirineos se han escalado en multitud de ocasiones, de hecho el Tourmalet es el que más veces se ha superado —más de setenta— desde que Henri Desgrange, el fundador de la carrera, lo incluyera en el recorrido de la edición de 1910. En aquellas primeras ediciones la llegada al Tourmalet suponía un reto mayúsculo para los corredores, incluso Octave Lapis, el primer ciclista en coronar su cima, tuvo que empujar su bicicleta a pie durante los últimos kilómetros. Ahora las carreteras y la tecnología son muy diferentes, aunque su dureza y leyenda se mantienen intactas, también en el Tour Femenino.
Este 2023 será la tercera vez que el pelotón femenino culmine en el punto más elevado del Col du Tourmalet, y lo hará siendo, posiblemente, la jornada clave para decidir la clasificación general y la ganadora del maillot amarillo. Se estrenó en la edición del Tour Cycliste Féminin en 1996, con victoria para la italiana Fabiana Luperini, y en el año 2000 el coloso pirenaico regresó durante la Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale. En aquella ocasión, el triunfo fue para la lituana Edita Pučinskaitė, compañera de equipo en el Alfo Lum RSM de Joane Somarriba , que concluyó segunda en el Tourmalet y encauzó la primera de sus tres victorias en el Tour femenino.

La séptima etapa será en horario vespertino, concluyendo en torno a las 19:15 de la tarde para que el ascenso al Tourmalet no coincida con el final de la Clásica de San Sebastián. En esas altitudes, superiores a los 2.000 metros, la temperatura y la metereología suelen ser muy diferente a las que se podrían vivir a medio día. De esta manera, este cambio podría tener cierta incidencia en carrera, pues el cuerpo de las ciclistas puede responder de manera diferente con temperaturas más bajas y la posibilidad de que la niebla aparezca en las zonas más cercanas a la cima.

Recorrido de la 7ª etapa: Lannemezan - Col du Tourmalet (89,8 km)
El inicio de la séptima jornada desde Lannemezan será suave y manteniendo una dinámica predominantemente llana a través de la aproximación hacia la puerta de entrada de la cordillera pirenaica. Una vez superado el esprint intermedio de Sarrancolin, que podría sentenciar el maillot verde, la llegada a Arreau cambia el escenario de la etapa. El terreno montañoso se adueña de los últimos 40 kilómetros, donde se acumulan más de 2.600 metros de desnivel con el icónico encadenado que inaugura la subida al Col d’Aspin. Sus 12 km al 6,5% de media, y un tramo superior al 10%, tendrán el papel de acumular fatiga antes del colofón final.
Su naturaleza será servir de enlace directo con el gran coloso de los Pirineos: el Col du Tourmalet. El descenso, que salvo un tramo central más técnico será rápido y tendido, conduce hacia Sainte Marie de Campan, donde arranca la subida al Tourmalet. Los primeros 5 kilómetros son los más asequibles con rampas en torno al 5%, pero los 12 kilómetros restantes hasta los 2.115 de altitud se convierten en un infierno constante que en ningún momento baja del 8%. La zona más exigente, con porcentajes de hasta el 12%, es la estación de esquí de La Mongie, que llega tras cruzar varias galerías.
Pero todavía quedará la parte más dura, al menos mentalmente, de Tourmalet. Esta condición corresponde, sin duda, al tramo final sobre la estrecha carretera que sigue la línea del teleférico. Se trata de una zona abierta, que permanece cerrada en época invernal al ser parte del dominio esquiable de La Mongie, desde donde se puede contemplar un paisaje montañoso precioso, pero también esa cima que parece no llegar nunca entre el Pic d’Espade y el Pic du Midi. Parece inevitable que la dureza de esta ascensión no sea la encargada de dictar a la ganadora del Tour de Francia femenino 2023.
Es el día marcado en rojo por todas las favoritas. Las ascensiones tan largas y exigentes son el punto fuerte de Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team), pero en La Vuelta sufrió el ritmo impuesto por Demi Vollering (SD Worx) desde la base de Lagos de Covadonga, aunque retuvo el maillot rojo y consiguió la victoria en la general. Todo apunta a que el duelo entre ambas se repetirá en las rampas del Tourmalet, aunque en esta ocasión la carrera llega envuelta en un gran ambiente de incertidumbre ante las pocas cartas mostradas por las aspirantes al amarillo hasta el momento.

De esta manera, aunque tanto Vollering como Van Vleuten acaparan todas las miradas para decantar la balanza de manera definitiva de un lado o del otro, corredoras como Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon // SRAM), Ashleigh Moolman (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick Step), Juliette Labous (Team DSM-Firmenich), Ane Santesteban (Jayco AlUla), Mavi García (Liv Racing) o Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) pueden soñar con dar la campanada y conseguir la victoria de etapa.
En 2022, aunque en una etapa sin un final tan exigente, fue precisamente en la penúltima jornada cuando Van Vlueten decidió atacar desde lejos y romper la carrera con una auténtica exhibición para ganar el maillot amarillo por más de tres minutos respecto a Vollering. En este caso, todo parece reservado para que sea el Tourmalet quien tenga tenga la capacidad de abrir diferencias insalvables si una ciclista está por encima del resto. Aun así, si la igualdad vivida hasta ahora se mantiene, tanto el maillot amarillo como la lucha por el podio podría quedar muy abierta de cara a la contrarreloj del domingo en Pau.

La octava y última etapa del Tour de Francia Femenino se llevará a cabo en Pau, con la novedad de la contrarreloj individual de 22,6 kilómetros de recorrido. Pese a que la corona parece que va a caer del lado de Demi Vollering, el podio aún está por decidir, por lo que se avecina un emocionante desenlace. La etapa se podrá ver desde las 15:00 horas en Eurosport 1 y en la APP.

Tour Femenino 2023 - Ane Santesteban: "Llevamos años pidiendo hacer subidas míticas como el Tourmalet en el ciclismo femenino"
Después de La Super Planche des Belles Filles en 2022, el Tour de Francia Femenino ha incluido el Col d'Aspin y el Tourmalet en la séptima etapa, un puerto que la corredora de Errenteria del Team Jayco AlUla conoce y reconoce como muy especial.

El auge del que está gozando el ciclismo profesional femenino está provocando que cada vez haya más carreras y que los organizadores se animen y busquen recursos para dar el paso y crear una competición o la versión femenina de algún evento masculino. En carreras con una gran tradición, como pueden ser la carreras por etapas y las clásicas, siempre existe la disyuntiva si la versión para fémina debe considerar mantener el mismo recorrido o no, lo que puede suponer retos logísticos y económicos.
En la edición 2023 de La Vuelta Femenina —en su formato actual como competición de una semana—, la organización apostó por incluir un puerto como Lagos de Covadonga en final en alto en la última etapa. De algún modo, recogieron el guante de la propuesta del Tour de Francia Femenino 2022 —en esta segunda época bajo la batuta de A.S.O.— de terminar en lo alto de La Super Planche des Belles Filles.

Tanto Lagos de Covadonga como La Super Planche des Belles Filles son puertos con una larga tradición en el profesionalismo masculino y ahora empiezan a escribir su historia en el ciclismo femenino. Este 2023, el Tour Femenino ha incluido el Col d'Aspin y el Tourmalet en la séptima etapa, un encadenado que el ciclismo femenino ya ascendió en las ediciones de 2001 y 2002 en la Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale. "Llevamos años pidiendo hacer subidas míticas —comenta Ane Santesteban en relación al papel que estos puertos puedan tener en la narrativa del ciclismo femenino—. En la Vuelta también tuvimos Los Lagos de Covadonga, que fue una subida muy especial. Yo creo que que es necesario incluirlos en los recorridos. Personalmente, estoy con muchísimas ganas de subir el Tourmalet".
A diferencia de otras corredoras del pelotón que en la etapa del sábado subirán por primera vez este puerto de categoría especial de los Pirineos, la corredora vasca del Team Jayco AlUla ya lo conoce bien: "Sí, lo he subido. Yo vivo muy cerquita del Tourmalet. Es una subida muy mítica. Este año he estado viendo también el Tour de los chicos a pie de carretera y hace mucho años también estuve en La Mongie viéndolo. Entonces es algo especial, vi a lo corredores pasar, fui a los autobuses y eso. Y ahora estoy como en la otra parte y la verdad es que tengo muchísimas ganas".
El hecho de incluir estas cimas míticas también anima a mucho público a acercarse para ver la carrera, lo que genera mucha más visibilidad al ciclismo femenino y amplifica la experiencia de las corredoras: "Ya he recibido muchos mensajes de gente que me van a esperar en el Tourmalet animando y la verdad que eso da mucha, mucha fuerza", confiesa Santesteban, que también asegura que no se ha marcado ningún objetivo en este Tour de Francia. "Me estoy encontrando bien. Después del Giro recuperé bien y ya entrenando tenía buenas sensaciones. No me quiero poner ningún resultado como objetivo ni en la etapa de Tourmalet ni en la contrarreloj. Simplemente quiero llegar a Pau, a la última etapa, y estar segura de que lo he dado todo en la carretera, y que no podía hacer nada más. Y con eso estaré más que satisfecha".

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.
Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?
My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D
Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.
I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.
All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.
If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!
We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.
If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.
The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).
I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.
The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?
A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.
Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.
We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
