A Trip to the Moon ( French : Le Voyage dans la Lune ) is a 1902 French silent film and the best-known of the hundreds of films made by director Georges Méliès .  Named the 84th greatest film of the 20th century by The Village Voice , it is widely regarded as the earliest example of the science fiction film genre and, more generally, as one of the most influential films in cinema history.  The film follows a group of astronomers who travel to the moon in a cannon-propelled capsule, explore the moon's surface, escape from an underground group of Selenites (Lunar inhabitants), and return with a splashdown to Earth with a captive Selenite.

A great number of French, English and American manufacturers of films who are searching for novelties, but lack the ingenuity to produce them, have found it easier and more economical to advertise their poor copies as their own original conceptions.  This accounts for the simultaneous appearance in several issues of a well known New York paper of advertisements of the celebrated Trip to the Moon by four or five different concerns, each pretending to be its creator.  All these pretensions are false.  The Trip to the Moon as well as Gulliver's Travels , The Astronomer's Dream , Cincerella , Red Riding Hood , Blue Beard , Joan of Arc Christmas Dream etc., are the personal creations of Mr. George Melies, who himself conceived the ideas, painted the accessories and acted on the stage.

The Legacy of ‘A Trip to the Moon’

Arguably, cinema peaked immediately with the pure nonfiction works of the Lumière brothers and the fantastical films of Georges Méliès . The latter, a former stage illusionist, gave us hundreds of magical works that remain the obvious forebears of much of today’s genre cinema and special-effects spectacle.

His most famous film is the 1902 short A Trip to the Moon , which was inspired by the fictions of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells and depicts — as the title makes perfectly clear — a lunar mission. Its image of a rocket crashing into the eyes of an actor portraying the Man in the Moon is one of the most iconic in movies.

As such a significant work, despite not being the filmmaker’s first foray into Moon-based science fictions or even representing the lunar body anthropomorphically,  A Trip to the Moon  has been a huge influence on and inspiration to all kinds entertainments and practices over the course of nearly 120 years.

Here are the most notable movies, songs, and historical effects that comprise the legacy  of  A Trip to the Moon :

Film Piracy

Despite having made one (or more) of the most famous and iconic movies of all time, Méliès was ultimately not a financially successful filmmaker. Though he would continue producing motion pictures for another 20-plus years, A Trip to the Moon was a major loss for him and his company.

At the time, the film was his most ambitious and therefore most expensive. It was also his most popular, and he hoped to make a ton of money off its esteem. Unfortunately, while it was a huge hit in America, Méliès did not profit much from the export due to rampant film piracy.

Unlike the piracy that we have today, the theft of intellectual property in the early 1900s was done mostly by major businesses. The Edison Manufacturing Company, Vitagraph, Biograph, and others illegally made copies of A Trip to the Moon for distribution in the US through the years.

Méliès quickly set up an office in the States to stop the piracy of his films and secure American patents, but it was too late for many of his titles. And thanks to further bullying practices of Thomas Edison , the visionary French filmmaker was constantly losing money in the industry he helped pioneer.

Another way to get around paying for Méliès’ film — and this was something also done often back then — was to make your own. While Edison and others made copies of A Trip to the Moon by producing new negatives of prints they bought, Spanish director Segundo de Chomón copied the film by helming a nearly shot-for-shot remake.

Excursion to the Moon , released in 1908, has enough differences to not mistake it for the original — the face in the Moon, in particular, is a major giveaway, as is the way the rocketship crashes into its mouth rather than its eye — but it’s similar enough that as an unauthorized redo there’s definitely a case to make of its infringement. It’s not as if Chomón was a hack. This practice was just the early 20th-century version of everyone making Star Wars ripoffs in the early ’80s. It’s just that Pathé wanted something nearly identical to the real thing and got the guy considered the Spanish Méliès to do it. It’s like if they got Douglas Trumbull, Stanley Donen, or Mike Hodges to make Star Wars wannabes. Oh right, that all happened.

The Music Video

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, music videos were the perfect bridge between film school and movie career, not just for the experience but also to show off familiarity with film history. For Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, though they’d been out of school for many years, represent that transition very well with their 1996 video for Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight.”

Originally, the couple had wanted to pay homage to Busby Berkeley musical numbers with their take on the song, but that had just been done in another video. So, inspired by the art on the album cover for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , on which the song appears, Dayton and Faris decided to pay tribute to Méliès with essentially a remake of A Trip to the Moon .

The video was a huge hit, winning many awards from MTV and earning a Grammy nomination, and through its heavy airplay introduced tons of viewers to such imagery as the iconic face in the moon, faces in stars, bouncing aliens, and bullet-like rocketship (though the humans — yes, those are SpongeBob SquarePants stars Tom Kenny and Jill Talley) arrive by space zeppelin.

The video concludes with a more elaborate underwater sequence than is found in A Trip to the Moon , however, clearly inspired more by Méliès’ The Mermaid and Under the Seas . Surprisingly, after Dayton and Faris became best known for the “Tonight, Tonight” video, the filmmaking duo did not go on to make sci-fi/fantasy films, but rather dramas such as Little Miss Sunshine .

The Reenactment

The same month as the debut of the “Tonight, Tonight” video saw the broadcast of the final part of HBO’s miniseries From Earth to the Moon , which chronicles the history of the Apollo program. Titled “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” (the French name for the film), this 12th installment of the program deals with the final trip to the Moon (Apollo 17) as well as the making of A Trip to the Moon .

Tom Hanks , who is one of the producers and the host of the series, appears in the Jonathan Mostow-helmed episode portraying a fictional assistant to Méliès (Tchéky Karyo) during the making of the famous sci-fi short. From Earth to the Moon painstakingly recreates the sets and costumes for a seamless cut between the real thing and the reenactment, so well that its goofy tone is excused.

Despite the interplay here and the belief that NASA’s original scientists were likely inspired by sci-fi literature, television, and cinema, there’s no direct connection between A Trip to the Moon and the actual trips to the Moon by American astronauts in the ’60s and ’70s. Even a known letter to NASA in the ’80s asking if their “splashdown” method of reentry was inspired by Méliès was shot down.

When you have a moment as iconic as the rocket in the eye bit of A Trip to the Moon , you’re bound to be paid homage and parodied up the wazoo. Indeed, there have been reworkings of the shot through the years in art and, most memorably, in cartoons. From 1999, Futurama has a funny gag in its second episode in which Bender sticks a beer bottle into the eye of a Moon-faced mascot.

A few years later, The Simpsons spoofed the same scene in the form of a violent Itchy & Scratchy short within the 13th season episode “Blame It on Lisa.” The mouse and cat are playing golf, and Itchy clubs Scratchy’s head clean off, knocking it all the way into the anthropomorphized Moon’s eye, a la A Trip to the Moon . “Now, that’s what I call a Moon shot,” the Man in the Moon says.

Eight years later, the show did it again. In the 21st season episode “Moe Letter Blues,” we see a black and white Itchy & Scratchy toon involving more of the Méliès film. Itchy plays a director making a sci-fi film that looks very similar to A Trip to the Moon . When Scratchy messes up the set, Itchy cuts his head off, inflates it to greater size then fires the rocketship into his eye. The end.

The New Score

If you listened to Air ‘s perfect debut album Moon Safari back in the ’90s and thought, “Hey, these guys should score sci-fi movies,” you’d have been 20 years ahead of the curve. First, they had to go and score a drama about five teenage sisters first (nevertheless impressively), and then 12 years later they were tasked with creating a new score for a 109-year-old sci-fi short.

After a rare hand-colored print of A Trip to the Moon was discovered in 1993, plans for a restoration eventually were made by a collaboration between Lobster Films, the Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema, and the Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage. They recruited Air to compose new music for the reconstructed classic, released in 2011.

As you can see and hear above, it’s a perfect match. It’s not as random as some electronic scores for old silent films out there, with the French duo adding sound effects and offering enough changes in the music to fit the different environments. The score makes A Trip to the Moon anew with the way Air’s layered soundscapes deliver tone to the film that wasn’t there before.

And if the 15-minute score wasn’t enough, AIr put out a whole new album based on the gig (titled Le Voyage Dans la Lune ), which is twice as long as the main composition and plays like an extended soundtrack to the short.

Fantastic Voyages of the Cinematic Imagination: George Méliès’s Trip to the Moon

George Méliès has always figured as a term in larger debates: as a fantasist in opposition to the realism of the Lumières, or as an early narrativist in Sadoul’s teleological history of narrative development. More recently he has been invoked as a purveyor of attractions, which is the primary way that he figures in Matthew Solomon’s new anthology. Rather than deal with the entirety of Méliès’s career, this collection focuses on a single film, A Trip to the Moon (1902), using it as a site of intersection for many of the issues currently in play for the study of early cinema. Solomon has brought together some of the major figures in the field, including Tom Gunning, André Gaudreault, Paolo Cherchi Usai and Richard Abel, so that this collection provides a valuable resource, not just on this film, but more broadly, on the research questions that are now motivating the study of early cinema.

The importance of this field has been well established for some time now. Following the 1978 FIAF Congress in Brighton, historians and archivists produced massively important work that reinvigorated film studies by combining close textual analysis with a strong sense of social context. Not only did this provide a framework for revisionist evaluations of film practices, but it also provided the site for historiographic considerations, as the question of how film history had been written, and might now be re-conceived, became central issues. The failure of the postmodernism paradigm then led to an emphasis on modernity as an alternative epochal term for which more coherent theoretical positions might be developed. However, as film studies thrives on novelty, the issue now is how to find ways of keeping the concerns of early cinema studies fresh, as what was once revisionism has itself become orthodoxy.

All of which brings us to Méliès’s film. Solomon (who teaches at City University of New York at Staten Island) introduces the collection by giving an overview of the life of the film from its initial release in 1902 to its (and Méliès’s) disappearance and re-discovery at the end of the 1920s, its passage into the international canon in an incomplete version collected by the Museum of Modern Art, and its subsequent archival restoration in the past fifteen years. (The book handily comes packaged with a dvd with two versions of the film, both accompanied by commentaries.)

Several of the chapters reprint older material in new translations. These include Paolo Cherchi Usai’s brief introductory notes for a 1991 Méliès exhibition at George Eastman House and Gaudreault’s 1981 essay on ‘Theatricality, Narrativity, and Trickality’. The importance of the anthology lies in the shifting ways that connections emerge between the chapters. Gaudreault’s essay along with Viva Paci’s deal with the film as an attraction, the term applied by Gaudreault and Gunning to what they saw as the predominant mode of film practice in the first decade of the cinema. The cinema of attractions involves the display of the cinema as a technology of wonder and spectacle, rather than as a transparent mechanism for narration. A widespread cinematic practice that did something other than narrate was an enticing proposition for those invested in theories about the supposed absorption and positioning of the spectator in later narrational practices. Subsequently many people have chafed under the historical limits of the initial periodisation of the “cinema of attractions,” with Viva Paci being a good case in point. She is keen to use Méliès’s film to argue for the persistence of attractionality in a range of work including MGM musicals, Busby Berkeley’s work, avant-garde filmmaking and contemporary video clips. This tends to abstract the formal properties of these forms of filmmaking from their placement within wider social and cinematic formations.

The bulk of the authors however, look backwards rather than forwards, attempting to locate Méliès’s film within a web of other works from which it draws. Foremost among these influences are Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon , H.G. Wells’s The First Men in the Moon , Offenbach’s operetta Le Voyage dans la lune , as well as the rides at various expositions and world’s fairs taking place around the same time in France and the United States. Rather than anachronistically invoking science fiction, Frank Kessler locates the film in the genre of the féerie , a theatrical form of the period that fixed fantastical plots with mixed modes including music, ballet, stage trickery and whatever else came to hand.

This notion of the film as a hybrid that involves mixed modes of spectacle and address is an idea extended by Tom Gunning. No one is more closely associated than Gunning with an emphasis that links modernity and vision. His essay here deals with Méliès’s film in terms of what he calls “modern vision.” He is quick to point out that this term is not a biologically based one, but rather a system-based abstraction heavily influenced by the thinking of Dziga Vertov, which identifies the eye, its relation to the objects of vision, and the range of adjacent technologies that exist to augment human vision. These include the camera, the telescope, the x-ray and so on. The result is “a modern hyperstimulus of vision and its abstraction of space” (108). Gunning is interested in what he sees as the ways the film demonstrates the exploration of space, just as the characters in the film are also explorers of outer space.

Murray Pomerance picks up this ball and runs with it. Pomerance’s central claim is that A Trip to the Moon is concerned with the elimination of space. Like Gunning, he argues this case by the familiar tactic of reading the film’s narrative as a metaphor for its own construction. The spatial incongruities and inconsistencies of the mise-en-scène suggest abstract ways of overcoming the bounds of spatial distinctions. Méliès as filmmaker conquers space, just as Méliès as Professor Barbenfoullis in the film conquers space and space creatures. On page 92 Pomerance writes:

Is not Méliès signalling us to consider the moving point-of-view as prototypical…he is showing us the abstract idea of a moving point-of-view, in order to suggest, perhaps, that all of the film is to be conceived in this peripatetic way.

Rather than Méliès signalling anything like this, it strikes me that Pomerance is the one doing the signalling. This notion of the text as a space for the play of the analyst is one that Victoria Duckett explores. Her central contention is that the film contains (or rather, can be made to contain) a satirical feminist distance. In her essay, the film becomes a starting point for a chain of associations. She ends with the rhetorical question, “To what extent might I actually be inventing feminist agency?” (177).

Apart from the unbounded play of references, early cinema history has also grounded itself in more material questions concerning the industrial circulation of films. Thierry Lefebvre makes the point that the scale of the film was exceptional for Méliès at this point in his career and that the film’s primary intended market was the United States. This is an insight taken up by Richard Abel, who has a long-standing interest in the marketing and reception of French films in the U.S. He traces the way that American audiences were more likely to see A Trip to the Moon as an Edison film rather than a French one. This has a special resonance in Australia where the French film components of the Salvation Army’s Soldiers of the Cross program were the basis of Australian nationalists’ claims to have produced the first long-form feature in the world.

A Trip to the Moon (French: Le Voyage dans la lune ) is a 1902 black-and-white French science fiction film about ( surprise! ) six Frenchmen going to the moon. It is based loosely on two popular novels of the time: From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells , though some sources claim otherwise on the latter. Another major source of inspiration was an 1875 operetta of the same name.

Notable for being one of the Ur Examples of science fiction film and associated tropes, and for its innovative animation and special effects, including the well-known image of the spaceship landing in the moon's eye.

Plays a key role in the Brian Selznick children's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret and its Martin Scorsese -directed film adaptation Hugo . The movie also served as the main inspiration for the music video of " Tonight, Tonight " by The Smashing Pumpkins . The story of the film's production was also used in the final episode of From the Earth to the Moon as a contrast to the parallel story of the final Apollo flight, the only one to have actual scientists.

A Trip to the Moon contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Amalgamation : It is based loosely on two popular novels of the time: From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells , though some sources claim otherwise on the latter. Another major source of inspiration was an 1875 operetta of the same name.
  • Artistic License – Physics : The idea that subjecting a human to the force needed to send a capsule to the moon via cannon being probably a bad idea was actually pretty well understood at the time, but in this fantasy ignored.
  • The film was coloured by handpainting each frame of the film . This was a few years before tinting became possible and over a decade before the earliest technicolor processes.
  • The scene where the ship approaches the moon was filmed by mounting the oversized moon prop on railings and sliding it towards the camera. Why not do the smart thing and just move the camera? Because the technology was new and the people involved were still transitioning from theater performance and theater thinking. The camera was seen as a stand-in for the audience, and who would be insane enough to move the audience around while the props sit still?
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space : Artistic License on the part of Méliès, since even in 1902, astronomers knew from telescopic observation that the Moon had little to no atmosphere.
  • Crazy-Prepared : It was certainly handy that all the men thought to bring umbrellas with them to the Moon.
  • Deface of the Moon : Crashed a spaceship right in its eye!
  • Epic Movie : By the standards of the day, at least. This film is more than fifteen minutes long, when its contemporaries averaged around five minutes or so. It was also one of the first Science Fiction films to be made at a time when most films tended to be about mundane, everyday things .
  • Eye Scream : The iconic scene of the ship landing in the moon's eye.
  • Fanservice : All the girls in hot pants standing by at the launch.
  • Genius Loci : The moon, as evident in the picture above.
  • Gravity Sucks : How are they going to get off the moon and back to Earth? By going over the edge. The assumption here being that the Earth is providing the gravity on the moon.
  • Human Aliens : Averted here (see the Humanoid Aliens entry below), but played straight in The Remake An Excursion to the Moon , made by Segundo Chomòn without Méliès's blessing or participation. In that unauthorized remake, the aliens seem evenly divided into Fu Manchu lookalikes and attractive French ballerinas.
  • Humanoid Aliens : The Selenites look and move basically like (very acrobatic) human beings, but their heads are somewhere between birdlike and insectoid, and they appear to have exoskeletons as well.
  • Lampshaded by Rifftrax: Mike: (as scientist) Hold on, we're going back to kill the rest of them, right? Kevin: (as scientist) Yeah! It's so addictive!
  • Interplanetary Voyage : It's called A Trip to the Moon , you know.
  • Made of Explodium / Made of Plasticine : The Selenites will vaporize if you hit them hard with an umbrella, or really, any strong impact will do. Which makes the astronomers' aggressive behaviour towards them seem all the worse.
  • The Man in the Moon : Hi there!
  • No Body Left Behind : The Selenites disappear into a puff of smoke when struck.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything : Despite being ostensibly part of a scientific expedition, the travelers seem to be much more interested in killing the local fauna than studying them or their environment.
  • Pop Culture Osmosis : That trope image of the "spaceship stuck in moon's eye" is about the only thing most people know of the film.
  • Pop-Star Composer : Sort of; Air made the soundtrack for restored color version, nearly 110 years later.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat : How the astronomers are dressed.
  • Rule of Cool : Méliès' priority was in entertaining with an impressive spectacle, not advancing astronomic theory.
  • Satire : The behavior of the astronomers and their interactions with the aliens is said to be critical of colonialism.
  • Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism : Despite its reputation as a movie which inspires a sense of childlike wonder, the movie lies on the cynical end. The scientists are madmen who murder as many aliens as they can for no reason, suffer no consequences and are rewarded at the end with a parade in their honour.
  • Soft Water : The ocean when falling from the height of the moon without any slowing mechanism.
  • Stop Trick : Trope Maker .
  • Trip to the Moon Plot : It's all about a bunch of people who slingshot themselves into the moon and then come back.
  • Villain Protagonist : Our 'heroes' invade another world, murder a bunch of their inhabitants, commit regicide, accidentally drag one of the natives home and put him on a leash for a parade.
  • Weird Moon : Aliens and giant mushrooms, hm?
  • When Elders Attack : The head professor is battling against the aliens.
  • Zeerust : Considering it's over a century old...

From John F. Kennedy to Pope Paul VI, the first moon landing —the 50th anniversary of which we just celebrated on July 20—inspired unforgettable quotes which have become as immortal as the images of that first moon walk. Here are five of the most memorable related to the adventure that pushed humanity beyond the limits of what was thought possible , and that meant much more than just a journey to a new frontier …

In one of the most emblematic speeches in the history of political rhetoric, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) announced that man would go to the moon, and put to use all the resources of the USA to achieve it. The space race with the Soviet Union was perhaps the most innocent of the competitions of the Cold War, but in no way was it free of cloak-and-dagger activities. During his speech on September 12, 1962, at the stadium of Rice University, JFK proposed a government policy, but also a transcendent reason for that policy:

There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The Apollo program continued. When he gave that speech, a national majority was against the lunar program, but his words inspired the nation and may well have been decisive for changing the course of history.

St. Paul VI, like the rest of humanity, followed the events of July, 1969, with close attention, and that was reflected in his public words in his Angelus message for July 20, 1969:

Who are we, that we are capable of so much? It would be good for us to meditate on this progress. Today, the scientific and operational progress of humanity is arriving at a goal that seemed unreachable: where may the thoughts and actions of man yet arrive? The admiration, the enthusiasm, the passion for the tools and products of the ingenuity of the hand of man fascinate us, perhaps to the point of folly. And here is the danger: we must protect ourselves from this possible idolatry of tools. It’s true that tools multiply man’s efficiency beyond all limits; but is this efficiency always to his advantage? Does it make him good? More human? Or might not the instrument imprison the humanity that produces it, and make them servants of a way of life that instrumentalizes man in production, and that imposes its own paradigm on its use? Everything still depends on the heart of man.”

Buzz Aldrin and the Psalm that reached the moon

Buzz Aldrin, a Presbyterian, brought the Word of God with him to our planet’s natural satellite, along with communion given him by his pastor. Since the astronauts were only allowed to carry a very small amount of personal objects with them, he brought a few Bible verses written on a 3-by-5 card , including Psalm 8: 3-4:

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? And the Son of Man, that thou visitest Him?”

BUZZ ALDRIN

Neil Armstrong’s famous first step

The honor of being the first man to step on the moon fell to Neil Armstrong, whose sublime words have become famous around the world:

That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.”

There is debate around whether or not Armstrong said the “a” (not audible in the recording of the live transmission), and about whether he came up with the quote before or after leaving the earth, but in any case, his words captured the significance of the moment.

Walter Cronkite

Journalist Walter Cronkite anchored CBS’s coverage of the journey of Apollo 11. He was filled with emotion and waxed poetic with words like these, which he spoke right after sharing the images of Neil Armstrong stepping down onto the moon’s surface:

For thousands of years now, it’s been man’s dream to walk on the moon. Right now, after seeing it happen, knowing that it happened, it still seems like a dream. And it is, I guess—a dream come true.”

The biggest bombshells from Michael Cohen's testimony were all in Trump's own words

When Michael Cohen was arranging hush-money payments for Stormy Daniels , he tried very hard to keep Donald Trump's name out of it.

But in his under-oath testimony for Trump's criminal trial on Monday, Cohen placed Trump firmly in the room where it happened.

Trump's attorney-turned-nemesis quoted his former boss extensively, telling jurors about key moments when the billionaire-turned-candidate participated fully in the plot to keep Daniels quiet ahead of the 2016 election.

The Manhattan district attorney's office has accused Trump of falsifying 34 different documents — including checks bearing Trump's signature — to hide an election-influencing, $130,000 hush-money payment that silenced the porn star 11 days before the vote.

Trump's legal team has cast all the blame on Cohen, suggesting he went rogue and came up with the hush-money scheme without the former president's approval.

On the witness stand, Cohen spoke cautiously, walking jurors through his long history as Trump's sometimes-bullying "fixer." Trump, having heard much of the story before, appeared almost bored at the defense table. For minutes at a time, he closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair without moving.

Here are nine key moments in Cohen's testimony when he did the greatest damage to his former boss simply by quoting what he said were Trump's own words.

1. "Just be prepared — there's going to be a lot of women coming forward."

Cohen, who began working for Trump in 2007, talked to Trump for years about running for president. Cohen testified that the real-estate mogul had considered a campaign in 2011 but ultimately decided against it, resolving to run in the "next election cycle."

In 2015, Trump told Cohen he would run for president.

"You know when this comes out," Cohen said, quoting Trump talking about the announcement, "just be prepared — there's going to be a lot of women coming forward."

It was in that context, Cohen said, that he met with the American Media Inc. publisher David Pecker in Trump Tower to discuss pushing positive stories about Trump in publications such as the National Enquirer and to get a heads-up about stories that could damage the campaign.

"What he said was that he could keep an eye out for anything negative about Mr. Trump and that he would be able to help us know in advance what was coming out and to try to stop it from coming out," Cohen testified.

2. "That's fantastic. That's unbelievable ."

The meeting with Pecker was a success.

The National Enquirer ran a series of positive articles about Trump and sensationalistic articles attacking his opponents. It claimed that Hillary Clinton wore "very thick glasses" to bolster a conspiracy theory of a brain injury, that Ted Cruz's father was photographed hanging out with Lee Harvey Oswald, and that Marco Rubio participated in a "drug binge" with a group of men in a swimming pool.

Trump was over the moon, Cohen testified.

"That's fantastic. That's unbelievable," Cohen quoted Trump as saying.

Pecker was happy , too, Cohen said. Trump's celebrity overlapped with the National Enquirer's target audience of people who bought magazines at grocery-store checkouts.

Trump's knowledge of how Cohen was working with the National Enquirer bolsters the prosecutors' theory that all these machinations were about supporting Trump's campaign. Personal issues — such as keeping news of an alleged affair away from Melania Trump — were secondary.

3. "Make sure it doesn't get released. "

In June of 2016, Cohen got a call from AMI telling him a former Playboy playmate, Karen McDougal , was shopping around a story about having sex with Trump.

When Cohen told Trump about it, his response was, "She's really beautiful," Cohen said.

"Okay. But there is a story that's right now being shopped," Cohen said he replied.

Trump supposedly said to Cohen, "Make sure it doesn't get released," instructing him to work with Pecker and the National Enquirer editor to purchase the rights to McDougal's story — and then make sure it never got to see the light of day.

Pecker came back to Cohen and said it'd cost $150,000 to "control the story," Cohen testified.

"No problem. I will take care of it," Cohen quoted Trump as saying.

4. "Do it. Take care of it."

In 2011 — long before Trump ran for president on the Republican ticket — Cohen was involved in convincing another gossip website to pull an article involving Daniels and Trump.

TheDirty.com ran an interview with Daniels in which she talked, in broad strokes, about a fling with Trump at a celebrity golf tournament in 2006. Trump wanted the story taken down.

"I said I'll take care of it," Cohen testified Monday. "He said, 'Absolutely, do it, take care of it.'"

Cohen said he threatened to sue TheDirty.com's publisher, and the story disappeared from the website.

Perhaps most damningly is what Trump didn't say to Cohen.

Cohen said he asked, but Trump wouldn't tell him whether he and Daniels really had sex .

"He turned around and said that she was a beautiful woman" as he walked out of the room, Cohen said.

5. "Women will hate me. Guys, they'll think it's cool."

Daniels dropped out of Trump's life again from 2011 through much of 2016.

Weeks before the election, she returned with the force of a hurricane.

It was just after The Washington Post published the " Access Hollywood " tape, which Trump believed hurt his reputation among women voters.

Keith Davidson, Daniels' lawyer, was in talks with the National Enquirer about the rights to her story, in which she could share all the vivid details about what she said was a sexual encounter with Trump.

Trump was livid, Cohen said.

"I thought you had this under control. I thought you took care of this," Cohen recalled Trump saying.

Cohen said Trump commanded him to "just take care of it," with the former president saying he was too busy with other parts of the campaign.

Cohen also testified that Trump acknowledged his polling with women was poor and understood the damage that Daniels' story could do to his candidacy — a key detail for prosecutors, who are aiming to show jurors that Trump wanted to suppress Daniels's story for his own campaign.

"This was a disaster. A total disaster. Women are going to hate me," Trump supposedly told Cohen. "This is a real disaster. Women will hate me. Guys, they'll think it was cool."

Trump ordered Cohen to work with Pecker to get the story under control.

"Get control over this. Get the life rights," Cohen quoted Trump as saying. "We needed to control this from coming out."

6. "Meet up with Allen Weisselberg and figure this whole thing out."

Cohen testified that in mid-October 2016, when discussing the idea of cutting a hush-money deal with Daniels, Trump told Cohen to get Allen Weisselberg, the then-Trump Organization chief financial officer, on the case to figure it out.

"Meet up with Allen Weisselberg and figure this whole thing out," Cohen recalled Trump saying.

"Just pay it," Cohen testified that Trump also told him. "There's no reason to keep this thing out there."

7. "If I win, it has no relevance because I'm president. And if I lose, I don't even care."

But when the time came to cut an actual check, Trump — ever the penny-pincher — didn't actually want to pay Daniels anything, Cohen testified.

Cohen said Trump's goal was to postpone the payment until after the November 2016 election, at which point he didn't think it would matter.

"If I win, it has no relevance because I'm president," Cohen quoted from Trump. "And if I lose, I don't even care."

"He wasn't thinking about Melania," Cohen added of Trump. "This was all about the campaign."

Cohen would wind up borrowing the money on a home-equity loan and paying personally. He would wire the money to Daniels' lawyer just 11 days before the election, according to records in evidence at the trial.

8. " Good. Good. Don't worry you'll get it back. "

When Trump learned from Cohen and Weisselberg that his then-fixer would foot the $130,000 payment to Daniels, he assured Cohen he'd get the money back.

"Allen and I spoke to Mr. Trump," Cohen said. "And we expressed to him that I was going to front the money for it." Trump "was appreciative," Cohen testified.

Cohen said Trump responded by saying: "Good. Good. Don't worry, you'll get it back."

With Trump unwilling to pay himself, it was the only way to silence Daniels and protect "the boss," Cohen said.

Weisselberg had floated the idea of tapping the money from someone who was about to pay for a golf-club membership or to see whether someone wanted credit for a bar mitzvah or wedding.

But that would mean using Trump money, Cohen noted, and the whole point was keeping the boss' name off things.

Cohen said he suggested to Weisselberg that he pay, noting of the then-CFO's salary, "You have seven figures."

"Michael, as you know, I have my four grandkids at prep school," Cohen recalled Weisselberg demurring. "And I have summer camps I'm paying for them, and I just can't do it."

"I ultimately said, 'OK, I'll pay it,'" Cohen told jurors.

9. "Don't worry about that other thing."

Cohen said he was livid in December 2016 when the then-president-elect stiffed him on his expected holiday bonus.

"I used quite a few expletives" complaining to Weisselberg, Cohen told jurors. "I was, even for myself, unusually angry."

Word must have got back to Trump, who was spending the holiday at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

"Did Mr. Trump call you while you were on vacation?" the prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked.

"He did," Cohen answered. He added that after a few tense pleasantries, Trump assured him: "Don't worry about that other thing. I'm going to take care of it when I get back."

"We'll take care of it when we all get back," Cohen recalled Trump promising.

Endless Ocean Luminous , the latest in Nintendo and developer Arika’s cult aquatic exploration games, is out now, and completing the game’s story mode is no easy task. Doing so requires you to completely fill in the “Mystery Board,” a grid featuring 99 different achievement-style tasks. To make matters even more complicated, the game doesn’t inform you how to solve any of these mysteries, you just have to stumble on the solutions yourself through trial and error. But hey, if you're not up for that grind, scroll on down for our guide to unlocking all 99 squares on the Mystery Board.

Mystery Board Basics

The maps in Endless Ocean Luminous are procedurally generated, which means I can’t provide you with specific locations or instructions on how to unlock any of the squares on the Mystery Board – it’s all luck of the draw. That said, there are different types of achievements on the board, so here’s some guidance on how to approach them.

  • Disc Puzzles – These mysteries ask you to “swim aside” a specific creature (look at #32 below for an example). How these puzzles work, is you have to find a large disc on the ocean floor and scan it. You’ll then be given a clue. Determine what creature the clue was referring to, find them, have them swim with you and return to the disc with them.
  • UMLs – Number 9 though 18 on the board require you to scan specific UMLs (Unique Marine Lifeforms). Here’s how to make a UML appear on your map .
  • Coins – These coins can be randomly found while scavenging (look for glints of light on the ocean floor).
  • Treasure Chests – Look for treasure chests (they look like blue and black blocks) and open them to hopefully find the specific treasure required.
  • Tablets – The mysteries with quotes like #3 below are acquired by finding small lore tablets.
  • Landmarks - Simply swim past the landmark in question.
