The Barclay James Harvest was finally fully formed in 1967 and were progressive and experimental from day one, utilising orchestral ensembles and breaking away from standard methods of songwriting, just as The Beatles had done on their groundbreaking Sgt Pepper album. From the ’70s through to the ’80s, they enjoyed wide commercial success, earning them a place in the prog hall of fame and numerous worldwide tours. John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest is the modern incarnation of the legendary progressive rock band, led by vocalist and guitarist Lees, who co-founded the group in 1966. This show was due to take place on 10th May 2022 but will now take place on 28th May 2023. All tickets remain valid.

John Lees' Barclay James Harvest

John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest return to tour the UK for the first time in two years. The band will be promoting a new studio album, following on from their successful and acclaimed 2013 album  North , and the wonderful music of BJH over a staggering fifty years.

The band’s first single,  Early Morning , was released in April 1968 by EMI Records’ Parlophone label. The band’s legacy includes a series of classic albums,  Barclay James Harvest, Once Again, Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories, Everyone Is Everybody Else, Barclay James Harvest Live, Time Honoured Ghosts  (recorded in San Francisco by Neil Young producer Elliot Mazer),  Octoberon  and the platinum selling album  Gone to Earth . Barclay James Harvest went on to perform to 175,000 people on the steps of the Reichstag in West Berlin in 1980, the album of which topped the German charts.

With such classic songs as  Mockingbird, Hymn, Child of the Universe  and  Poor Man’s Moody Blues  featuring alongside more recent material such as  On Leave , these tour dates promise an evening of classic Barclay James Harvest alongside new music. Over five decades since the first Barclay James Harvest record, John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest look forward to live performance once more.

Huddersfield Live Orchestral Album on Pre-Order

In the early 1970s Barclay James Harvest pioneered the fusion of rock and classical music, touring with their own symphony orchestra. On the 23rd September 2023, a stunning and unique concert took place which saw the first performance by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest with a symphony orchestra to take place in UK since 1973. Joining JLBJH for this memorable concert was The Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Benjamin Ellin.

The performance featured classic BJH songs such as ‘The Poet’, ‘After the Day’, 'Mocking Bird’, ‘She Said’, ‘Galadriel’, ‘Poor Man’s Moody Blues’ and ‘Hymn’, and newer pieces such as ‘On Leave’, along with two pieces not performed live since 1973, Woolly Wolstenholme’s evocative ‘Moonwater’ (sung by guest vocalist Eleanor Sandars) and the epic and majestic ‘Dark Now My Sky’.

‘PHILHARMONIC! THE ORCHESTRAL CONCERT’ has been mixed in both stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound by Stephen W Tayler and captures the entire concert on 2CDs, a region free High-Definition Blu Ray video with 5.1 Surround Sound and an NTSC / Region Free DVD of this stunning concert film of one of the most memorable concerts staged by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest.

A Message From John

11th December, 2022

After three years of postponement and re-scheduling, we are really looking forward to the 2023 concert dates in March, April, May and June which we are pleased will be going ahead, with some slight adjustments to the original itinerary [see below] , which were outside the band's control.

As many of you know, in January I will celebrate my 76th birthday and I have come to the decision that our 2023 concerts will be my last year of full touring.

I do intend to continue to write and record with Craig, Kev and Jez , and JLBJH will still perform occasional one-off live dates in the future such as festivals or other special events, so it will not be a complete cessation of musical activity, but I do not intend to undertake further extensive tours beyond the dates in 2023.

I have been privileged to have enjoyed so many years making music, which could not have been done to the degree of success achieved without the help and support of Olwen and my family, my bandmates and musical collaborators, my managers, agents and promoters, the production crews we rely upon and, of course, the many fans around the world whose loyalty and continued engagement in the music is deeply valued. Thank you, one and all.

So I fully intend to go out on a high! We have a new album nearing completion and planned for release in 2023, and we have a busy year of live dates ahead of us.

During the 50th Anniversary Concert, Craig described our fans as "family" . It was an astute observation, and there is certainly an enduring sense of a community amongst Barclay James Harvest followers, which we hope will long continue to thrive. The band and I look forward to seeing as many of the BJH "family" as possible at the 2023 concerts, as we celebrate my "farewell to touring".

In the meantime, the band and I send you all our best wishes for the Festive season and for health, happiness and peace.

John Lees Barclay James Harvest reschedule UK dates to 2022

Covid forces John Lees' BJH to move dates to May 2022 and cancel their appearance at this year's A New Day Festival

John Lees Barclay James Harvest have rescheduled their 2021 UK tour dates to May 2022. Although the move affects the band's UK dates it seems the move is due to ongoing uncertainty across Europe rather than the UK with the current Covid pandemic.

"Due to continuing uncertainty about the feasibility of live concerts in 2021, the John Lees' Barclay James Harvest shows previously announced for London Islington Assembly and Leeds City Varieties have now been rescheduled," the band said in an announcement."

The band will now play Islington Assembly Hall on May 10 and Leeds City Varieties on May 12.

"Existing tickets will remain valid for the new dates - if you cannot attend the rescheduled shows, please contact the point of purchase for any queries regarding refunds."

At the same time the band have been forced to cancel their appearance at this year's A New Day Festival .

"JLBJH regret that they will be unable to perform on the bill at the New Day Festival in August 2021," the band add. "The band’s Summer concert schedule in Europe has been disrupted due to issues caused by the ongoing Covid-19 epidemic and unfortunately this has impacted on all the concerts originally planned for this Summer."

In a recent interview with Prog Magazine Lees revealed that the band are working on a new studio album, a follow-up to 2013's well-received North .

Manchester native progressive rockers Barclay James Harvest have seen a prolific career spanning 4 decades and countless live gigs. Having tapered off from roughly 60 gigs a year at the height of their career in the 70s, to less than 10 a year since 2000, the boys of Barclay James Harvest, despite being around for over 40 years, are still able to execute the excellence of a successful progressive rock band from another era.

With the band having gone their separate ways in 1998, its four founding members split into two separate acts working under confusingly similar names; John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest was founded in 1998 with original vocalist John Lees and keyboardist Stuart Wolstenholme (who passed away in 2010), and Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd, formed in 2002 with original bassist Les Holroyd and drummer Mel Pritchard (who passed away in 2004).

Both acts deliver an authentic performance. Original vocalist and founding member John Lees and his low, melodic voice hide behind the mic like a newly christened rock star, emerging only when the guitar riffs come spilling out of his fingers, showcasing his intricate skills and decades of experience. Les Holroyd takes over the vocals for his counter-act, demonstrating his prowess while effortlessly ripping on his bass guitar.

Classics like ‘Mockingbird’ and ‘Child of the Universe’ play a definitive role in their sets.

Barclay James Harvest’s steady success continues in Europe with regular gigs in Germany, France and Switzerland.
