Road Trip Car Characteristics

Passenger space: People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.

Cargo space: At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.

Fuel economy: Stopping for gas on a road trip can get expensive. Fuel efficiency, particularly from hybrid powertrains, can ease the pain of stopping at the pump.

Infotainment: An AM/FM radio is no longer sufficient for most people. An infotainment system that's easy to use while driving and can connect to smartphones is key.

Safety tech: Driving long distances causes fatigue, and fatigue causes accidents. Modern driver-assistance features can help you stay alert and in your lane.

Reliability: No one wants to be the car in the breakdown lane while on their road trip. A good predicted reliability score shows that a particular model has on average been a solid performer over time.

10 best cars for long-distance driving

April 21, 2023 by Carwow staff

' class=

Regularly take lengthy journeys? Here are 10 great cars you could consider

Improvements in engineering and technology mean even a supermini is capable of undertaking any trip you care to ask of it, but those who regularly cover big distances are likely to want something that’s capable of eating up the miles in supreme comfort, as well as having plenty of driver aids and tech.

But it’s no use a car being comfortable if it’s going to cost you the Earth to fuel. So our 10 best cars for long-distance driving combine refinement and efficiency, helping you arrive unruffled, but without having spent a painful amount on fuel.

Speaking of which, while diesel cars offer great MPG, we appreciate some may not be keen on a car that requires the black pump, so have included a variety of powertrains here.

In time, electric cars will become more popular for long-distance driving as range and charging infrastructure improve, but for now most people who undertake regular long journeys will be better-suited to petrol and diesel models. We’ve included a couple of the best EVs for long-distance drivers, though, because if you can charge at home and can avoid pricey public charging too often they should work out cheaper in the long run…

Here are 10 of the best cars for long-distance drivers:

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: eDrive40, up to 357 miles of range
  • Really comfortable for hours behind the wheel
  • Impressive range
  • Rapid charging for quick motorway battery top-ups

The BMW 5 Series has long been the go-to choice for those who spend hours behind the wheel, driving up and down motorways for a living. So it should, perhaps, be no surprise that the introduction of the i5 has seen this trend continue. Go for the eDrive40 model and you get brisk performance, a comfortable, high-tech interior and a quiet driving experience.

You could go for the high-performance M60 model, which still has an impressive official range of up to 315 miles, but you’re unlikely to get anywhere near that if you enjoy the epic power from time to time. Instead, the more affordable eDrive40 version should get you comfortably over 300 miles between top ups in the real world, and with a maximum DC charge rate of 205kW, it only takes half an hour to charge from 10-80% capacity. Just enough time for a toilet break and a coffee on a road trip.

2. Skoda Superb

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0-litre TDI 150hp, 57.7 mpg
  • Huge amounts of space, comfort and refinement
  • Frugal diesel and punchy petrol engines
  • Strong value for money

Skoda’s flagship model really lives up to its name – it’s superb. You get high levels of comfort and refinement, plus vast amounts of interior space – the rear seats of the Superb really do give cars like the Mercedes S-Class a run for their money.

A new model is set to go on sale in 2024, but if you can’t wait the outgoing model offers fantastic value. We’d opt for the 2.0-litre 150hp diesel engine for its 57mpg fuel efficiency, while going for SE L trim will get you adaptive cruise control, blind spot assistance and a driver fatigue sensor, all of which will help those long trips pass by in an instant. The Estate, meanwhile, has one of the biggest boots in the business.

3. Range Rover

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: D300, 36.7 mpg
  • Lofty driving position gives great visibility
  • Few cars are as comfortable on a long journey
  • Latest model is dripping with helpful tech

It may require pretty deep pockets, but it would be impossible to not include the Range Rover in our list of long-distance cars, thanks to the armchair-like seats and the high driving position that is often imitated but never bettered.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine is available with 300 or 350hp and returns around 30-35mpg in the real world, while the plug-in hybrids can cover up to 70 miles on battery power alone, and officially return over 300mpg (though getting close to this will require regular plugging in, and economy will dive further on the motorway once you’ve depleted the battery). Noise-cancelling speakers contribute to a hushed driving experience, while a high-end Meridian sound system, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assistance are among the features that help make long trips even more effortless.

4. Citroen C5 X

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: PureTech 130, 46mpg
  • Very comfortable over bumps
  • Stylish and practical interior
  • Usefully big boot

Wherever you take the Citroen C5 X it’s incredibly comfortable, largely because of the comfort-focused suspension that means bumps in the road feel like driving over squishy marshmallow. But it’s out on the open road where the C5 X really comes into its own, because the quiet cabin serves up the refinement of much pricier models.

There are only two engines on offer, and it’s the petrol that will be better for long-distance drivers, with fuel economy of 46mpg in official tests. There is a plug-in hybrid with temptingly high economy stats, but the battery isn’t very big so you will run out of electric power very quickly on the motorway, making your MPG figure nosedive.

5. Honda Civic

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0 i-MMD Hybrid, 60.1mpg
  • Impressive efficiency
  • Great to drive
  • Quiet at a cruise

It’s not just big, expensive cars that make for good long-distance driving companions. The Honda Civic is a prime example of this, because it’s great to drive whether you’re on a twisty road or cruising down the motorway, but it’s still pretty affordable to buy.

Your only engine option is a self-charging hybrid, which promises excellent fuel economy and seems to be capable of spending a lot of time running on electric power even on longer trips. That means you can set the standard-fit adaptive cruise control and relax in the quiet cabin without having to worry about burning through petrol once the battery’s dead.

6. Mercedes E-Class

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: E 220 d, 59mpg
  • About as comfortable and refined as it gets
  • Packed full of technology
  • Spacious and practical

You might think the Mercedes S-Class is the ultimate long-distance Mercedes, and while you might not be wrong, it’s arguably better if you’re sitting in the rear seats. That’s why the E-Class is our pick if you need to churn through the miles yourself.

The new E-Class went on sale in 2023 and it’s closer than ever to being a baby S-Class. It’s cheaper (but far from cheap) while being just about as comfortable and packed full of all the technology you could ever need. You can even get it with a diesel engine still, though you would have to be a high-mileage driver for it to work out cheaper than petrol in the long run.

7. Tesla Model 3

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: Model 3 Long Range, up to 390 miles of range
  • Tesla’s Supercharger network appeals
  • More comfortable than ever before

The Tesla Model 3 has been one of the best electric cars at any budget for a few years now, and despite the fact there have been dozens more alternatives cropping up for sale recently, it’s still one of the very best – especially since a fairly comprehensive update was introduced in late 2023. What’s most important for long distance drivers is that the Model 3 is now more comfortable and quieter than the old version, making it even more relaxing to drive. And you still get access to Tesla’s excellent Supercharger network.

If you want to make your motorway mileage more stress free, go for the Enhanced Autopilot upgrade. It’s fairly pricey, but gives you an advanced cruise control system that keeps pace with the car in front and can even change lanes for you. New features, such as automatic parking, are coming soon and will be automatically added over your home WiFi. Full-Self Driving is the highest assistance offering from Tesla, but it doesn’t quite offer what the name suggests, and it’s very expensive for something that doesn’t add much over the cheaper system in the UK right now.

8. Volvo XC90

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: B6 AWD Mild Hybrid, 32.5mpg
  • About as safe as cars get
  • Room for seven people
  • Relaxing to drive

If you spend a lot of time on the road, or have big journeys planned, it’s not just comfort and efficiency that are key concerns, it’s also safety – especially if you have your family along for the trip. That’s where the Volvo XC90 comes into its own, because it’s big and relaxing to drive, but also comes with all the safety kit you could reasonably want. It’s not quite as quiet and comfortable over bumps as you might expect, but the positives outweigh these negatives.

You can’t get a diesel engine, but the B6 petrol engine is more than up to the task of lugging this big old SUV about and cruising quietly at speed. You could go for the plug-in hybrid, but as with the Citroen, its electric range isn’t great so you will notice economy drop quite a bit on a long drive.

9. Volkswagen Golf

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0-litre TDI 150hp, 62.8 mpg
  • Fantastic refinement for a hatchback
  • Wide range of engines suits all tastes
  • Plenty of driver assistance tech, too

It may seem odd to have a relatively small car nestled among this list, but the Volkswagen Golf has long been an impressively refined car for its size, and the eighth-generation version is no exception to this.

Choose from everything from an efficient yet peppy 1.0-litre petrol engine to the 320hp performance-orientated Golf R, though long-distance travellers may well favour the 150hp 2.0-litre diesel thanks to its official 62.8mpg figure. A head-up display, adaptive cruise control, fatigue assistance and a variety of lane-change assistance systems will help take the strain out of the drive, too.

10. Toyota Supra

best long distance travel vehicle

  • Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0 Pro, 39.7mpg
  • Strong engines and sharp looks
  • A proper two-seat grand tourer
  • Genuinely impressive ride comfort

All of the cars we’ve featured so far presume you want or need to undertake long journeys and be able to carry multiple passengers and plenty of luggage, but some buyers will undoubtedly be making solo trips on a regular basis, and want something a little more spirited and stylish.

Step forward the Toyota Supra, which is more of a grand tourer than an outright sports car , offering excellent ride comfort, excellent interior technology, and an appealing 3.0-litre engine. True, the latter two aspects come courtesy of BMW, with whom the Supra was co-developed, but that just means you get an excellent infotainment system and driver tech, plus a great-sounding and potent six-cylinder engine. There’s also a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine, which returns 39.7mpg.

The Best Road Trip Cars for Exploring Solo, Sightseeing with Family, and More

By Kym Allison Backer

Jaguar Car Rental

We’re still working out where to safely travel in the immediate future, but what’s certain is that after months of staying close to home, we couldn’t be more ready to make a move—which means we're officially on the hunt for the best road trip cars. With gas prices holding steady, there’s no better time to load up your favorite playlists and hit the road, company optional. We’ve gone ahead and done the research for you, assembling a list of some of the best road trip cars to pick up at your local rental agencies to help ensure a seamless and safe trip, whether you’re traveling with your kids, going solo, or looking for an off-road adventure.

For packing in the whole family

Chrysler pacifica.

It’s only fitting that the brand that first put minivans on American roads is behind the award-winning Chrysler Pacifica (named Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Family Car of the Year by Cars.com). The sleek styling of the eight-seater will firmly put to rest any reservations about maintaining cool cred, while the spacious interior’s in-floor access bins and stow-and-go second- and third-row seats allow for a variety of configurations, no matter your family’s size . Opt for a model with all-wheel drive that automatically engages if you hit adverse weather.

The glossy, streamlined fourth-generation A8 is a stunner, from the sporty new grille to the interior’s ambient lighting. Once in motion, check out the drive select system; the comfort setting, which softens the steering and acceleration, will let you smoothly take precious cargo down rough roads. Warning: your kids will compete for the rear seats, thanks to the excess legroom, panoramic sunroof, and futuristic, neatly stowed console that controls all the rear amenities, like heated and massaging seats. Parking sensors and lane departure warning come standard.

Chevy Suburban

Don’t let the outsize proportions scare you off. The newly revamped Chevy Suburban ranks high when it comes to second-row legroom and cargo space, and now has an expanded third row that can comfortably accommodate long-legged teens. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and multiple cameras (up to nine) for 360-degree exterior views. For added security, there’s also hidden storage so that you can secure your valuables anytime you leave the vehicle. Opt for a model with dual rear screens to keep the kids endlessly entertained.

Mazda 6

The Mazda6 has a quiet cabin that can block out road noise on long drives.

For trekking 2,500 miles across the country

Toyota camry.

The Toyota Camry has consistently ranked as one of the most reliable midsize vehicles for the past three decades, making it one of the best picks for any trip. It offers incredible fuel economy, getting 29 miles per gallon in the city, and 41 miles per gallon on the highway (which also means fewer stops!) and has a notably quiet cabin where you can blast tunes and keep up with directions on the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Pedestrian detection, lane departure, brake assist, and lane tracing assist from Toyota’s Star Safety System also keep the Camry centered in its lane.

Genesis G70

The refined Genesis G70 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one of many accolades for this polished, comfortable sedan. It’s a pleasure to sit in the top-notch driver’s seat, with its well-padded diamond quilted Nappa leather. The cockpit feel is enhanced by aluminum accents, a short, stylish gear box, and the G70’s agile and responsive handling, which makes short work of the miles ahead. Added bonus: the trunk can fit multiple carry-ons or larger suitcases, and the rear seat folds for extra cargo space.

The Mazda6 is a good-looking sport sedan with a stylish interior designed for maximum comfort, a necessity when you’re spending days on the road. The Mazda6 gives you a peppy, smooth drive and a quiet cabin that blocks out exterior noise. There are convenient wheel-mounted controls, easy-access sound controls, and a solid navigation system that’s also a breeze to program. Standard features include folding rear seats, blind spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and low-speed forward-collision warning.

For exploring solo, safely

Toyota rav4.

When you’re on your own, reliability takes on a whole new level of importance. That’s where the RAV4 comes in: after more than 25 years on the road, the model remains a winner for its manageable size, dependable performance, and commendable fuel economy, getting 27 miles per gallon in the city, and 35 miles per gallon on the open road. You’ll appreciate the car's many safety touches, which include interior lights that illuminate as you approach and driver assistance features such as an integrated backup camera, folding and fully reclining rear seats, lane-tracing assist, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Ford Mustang

America’s love affair with the Mustang began over 50 years ago and it’s still going strong. The allure is obvious, from those legendary lines to the sound of the high-powered engine—but what lies at the heart of the Mustang’s enduring popularity is that once you slide into those bucket seats, it’s an unbeatably fun, and fast, ride. Standard models come with a rearview camera, six-speed manual transmission, and a complimentary dose of nostalgia.

Honda Accord

Ten generations in, the Accord has solidified its spot as one of the most durable and nimble vehicles on the road, a winning combination for a swift, problem-free drive. The distinctive sedan’s spacious interior provides ample legroom and comfort for even the tallest of drivers and the stellar fuel economy (30 miles per gallon in the city, and 38 miles per gallon on the highway) make it a no-brainer for any trip. Driver assist technology, including traffic sign recognition and an automatic braking system that kicks in to help prevent collisions, come standard.

Land Rover Autohome Roof Tent

The Land Rover Defender's roof can support up to 600 pounds, perfect for a roof tent.

For navigating the backroads

Land rover defender.

Land Rover has long perfected the marriage of form and function, making the Defender one of the best off-roading vehicles out there. Tackling muddy or rocky ground? The quick turn of a dial will let you select a suitable suspension and traction mode for the terrain you’re on and, if you approach water, the 3D-surround camera and wade-sensing system will gauge the depth and allow you to navigate through up to 35 inches. When parked, the rear seats fold down with the touch of a button, and the roof supports a tent and occupants up to a combined 600 pounds.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is Subaru’s largest SUV, and it puts that size to good use with a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds (enough to haul a small trailer). The generously sized cabin seats up to eight passengers, and the rear seats fold flat to haul extra cargo or to pinch hit as a makeshift bed. Traveling with a group? The Ascent’s roof rail capacity of 700 pounds nicely accommodates a sturdy rooftop tent. Standard features include all-wheel drive, driver assist technology, and a rear-seat reminder alert that sounds when anything is left behind as you prepare to exit the vehicle.

Volkswagen Atlas

VW’s seven-seater Atlas has already seen a few changes since its relaunch three years ago. It’s one of the largest crossover SUVs, has unmatched cargo and passenger space, folding second- and third-rows, and roof rails that you can use to secure anything from kayaks to boxes of gear. The Atlas is also capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds, has four adjustable all-wheel drive modes, stability enhancing systems, a hands-free liftgate, and park distance control.

Washington Pass Along the North Cascades Highway

For going greener

Ford fusion hybrid.

This attractive midsize gas-electric hybrid lets you keep track of energy output on customizable dashboard screens. Along with a roomy interior and 10-way power driver seat for maximum comfort, standard features include an eight-inch touchscreen and voice command for easy access to directions and entertainment, blind spot monitoring, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera.

Toyota Prius

The Prius has spent the last two decades accumulating industry accolades, and it’s still going strong. The gas-electric hatchback comes with stellar stats: consistently top-ranked on safety lists, excellent fuel economy (it averages 50 miles per gallon in the city, and 54 miles per gallon on the highway) and a reliable history. The company has also upped the model’s standard features, which now include a mammoth 11.6-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, an integrated backup camera, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. (And you’d be surprised how much you can fit in the trunk.)

Jaguar I-Pace

Be prepared to throw any preconceived notions about “boring” electric vehicles out the window when you encounter Jaguar's I-Pace. In the plush and surprisingly spacious cabin, take a minute to check out the detailed instrument panel, then select dynamic mode for a sporty, full-throttle ride. Before you zoom off, download an app like ChargePoint so that you’ll be able to quickly pinpoint fast-charging stations along your route—though with a 253-mile range, you'll have enough juice to get from, say, Washington D.C. to New York .

The 10 Best Road Trip Cars for Open-Road Adventures

Best Road Trip Cars 0 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Aug 16, 2023

In 1956, the U.S. government passed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, allocating $26B to construct an initial 41,000-mile  interstate network . In response to the network’s construction, countless restaurants, motels, and roadside attractions would pop up along these now-iconic highways in order to cater to automotive travelers — ultimately kicking off a grand and long-held tradition of road tripping that’s as American as baseball or apple pie.

And while there are plenty of factors that can have an enormous impact on the overall quality of your time spent on the road — such as your starting point, ultimate destination, travel companions, and budget — the single biggest variable is undoubtedly one’s choice of ride. With the exception of a handful of  new EVs , practically every car currently in production is more than capable of taking on cross-country touring duties, however, there’s a shortlist of models that objectively lend themselves to road-tripping far better than anything else on the market. And it’s this crop of vehicles that we’ll be exploring today in this guide to the best road trip cars you can buy — delving into the most capable long-distance cars available, along with what factors and qualities make a model ideal for long-haul travel.

What Factors Make For An Ideal Road Trip Car?

Though there are clearly several blatant areas to explore when buying a road trip-focused car — such as range, comfort, and cargo space — there’s also a myriad of less obvious, though still massively important elements to take into consideration when shopping in this space. Below, we’ll briefly touch on seven of the most pivotal areas to think about prior to pulling the trigger on your purchase.

Range:  Though most of the world’s major highway networks are littered with gas stations and service shops, the reality is that having to exit the freeway and pull over every other hour to fill up isn’t exactly convenient, which is why a car’s range (on a single tank) is of such importance. At the very least, you’ll want a vehicle that affords several hundred miles of autonomy between trips to the pump. This area is even more important for  electric cars , as — despite there being close to ten million charging stations scattered across the planet — there are far more gas stations than EV chargers. As such, you’ll not only want to review an EV’s range, but also the charging network that’s available for said EV.

Comfort:  Being comfortable in a car is obviously important, though this factor matters far more when dealing with road trip cars, as drivers — and their passenger(s) — typically spend hours at a time inside the cabin of these vehicles. Consequently, this makes a given car’s comfortability level of extreme significance. And while there are dozens of factors that contribute to how comfortable a car is, some of the more important elements to consider are the seats, their construction and upholstery, their level of adjustability, and whether they offer heating, cooling, or massage functions. Additional areas like dual climate control and robust soundproofing can also hugely up a car’s comfortability.

Amenities:  While there’s no denying that comfort is a hugely important area when dealing with road trip cars, there are nonetheless a handful of additional features that can very much bolster one’s enjoyment during long-range drives. Alongside amenities like touchscreen infotainment setups and moon/sunroofs, there are also features like web browsers and connectivity to streaming services that can enhance the users’ experience. Likewise, most of today’s best road trip cars also pack advanced suites of electronic driver assists such as forward collision warning and avoidance systems, lane keep assist, blindspot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few. Some brands also offer supplementary amenities, like Tesla, which sells cars equipped with features like “Caraoke,” HEPA filtration systems, and of course,  the American automaker’s  state-of-the-art autopilot system.

Storage:  The longer the road trip, the more gear the driver will typically need. As such, the amount of cargo space afforded by a particular vehicle is of utmost importance, as roomier rides will boast more internal real estate for stashing bags and equipment. And, though this is clearly a crucial area to consider when reviewing cars for road trips, it is worth pointing out that one can always supplement a car’s internal square footage with a roof rack or rooftop cargo box, though this option is obviously less convenient — and will often slightly mitigate fuel — or battery — consumption. You’ll also likely want to consider how many people the car seats, as well as how much cargo space is available for each passenger’s bags and gear. Backseat legroom is also a crucial area to consider when reviewing this element.

Reliability & Service Intervals:  The reality is that the vast  majority of new cars  are incredibly reliable and should have no issue driving cross country several times over. With that said, there are some models with better reputations when it comes to overall reliability. Additionally, if you plan to use this vehicle for extensive road-tripping, you’ll also want to look into the model’s required service intervals, as these figures can hugely vary. And, whether it’s a road trip car or a daily commuter — or even a motorcycle — it’s always worth looking into whether any recalls have been issued for a particular model.

Manufacturer & Dealer Support:  When going on a road trip, not only is it important to review how often a car needs to be serviced but also where it can be serviced, as some makes will boast a markedly more robust dealership and support network should you need a part repaired or replaced. This extends to areas like the availability of roadside assistance offered by a marque. It’s also worth pointing out that rarer and more exotic models will make for a much more difficult time sourcing replacement parts – as it’s not that hard to find a replacement component for a BMW car just about anywhere in the country, though the same can’t be said for models from brands like Bentley or Aston Martin.

Drivetrain & Performance:  Unlike commuting where the main objective is simply to get from A to B, long-range road-tripping is all about enjoying the journey and embracing the open road. As such, having a car that affords a more spirited driving experience makes for a markedly more enjoyable time behind the wheel, which is why reviewing a model’s engine is so important. Alongside the engine configuration itself, you’ll also want to check out its  aspiration type  and displacement — as well as horsepower and torque figures, 0-60mph times, and top speeds. A car’s suspension package is another crucial area to consider, as it will directly impact a model’s overall handling, as well as the smoothness of the ride. Quite a few cars also offer the best of both worlds with adjustable air ride suspension setups that can be lowered for spirited runs through the canyons, or raised back up for ultra-smooth and plush freeway travel.

CR's experts highlight the best long-distance haulers for individuals, small groups, and large families

Honda Accord Hybrid, Tesla Model3, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Lexus RX450H, Toyota Highlander Hybrid on an illustrated background

At CR, we think the best cars for road trips are the same ones that are great for everyday driving. They have lots of usable cargo space, a comfortable ride, and key safety technology, and they get great gas mileage. Lately, many vehicles that meet these criteria are hybrids. Today’s versions are bigger and more practical for more uses, while still offering significant fuel savings over their gas-only counterparts. Many also offer active driver assistance technology that can make driving less stressful. The Lexus RX450h and Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Sienna can even tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped—enough to haul a small camper.

13 Awesome SUVs We'd Love To Drive Long Distance

These SUVs offer comfort and space and are the ideal vehicles for adventurous road trips that will accommodate the entire family.

Although SUVs are great for city driving and everyday errands, the extra space and comfort also make them perfect for long-distance journeys. While many families used to prefer sedans, SUVs have become increasingly popular in the United States, Africa, and Europe over the last few decades. This has led to the further development of the SUV segment and the creation of compact SUVs, such as the T-Roc from Volkswagen , the Q2 from Audi, and the X2 from BMW.

Updated May 2023: Do you frequently take long journeys? Then you'll be happy to know we have updated the content of this list with the latest information regarding the best SUVs to use for a long road trip. SUVs offer all the practicality and comfort – coupled with the taller ride height – to make long-distance road trips feel like they happened in the blink of an eye. Thanks to the longer suspension travel over a sedan or wagon, the SUV is a great machine for both highway driving and traversing more rugged terrain when the situation calls for it.

The mid-size and large SUV segment also got a bump in style and desirability, with automakers such as Kia and Hyundai delving into the market with their affordable Telluride and Palisade models. BMW created the large X7 to battle the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS and even high-end automakers like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Ferrari have their own interpretations of an SUV. Most new electric cars launched to follow the crossover-SUV body style in some shape or form, as it is what customers want most.

The modern SUV comes with more than just extra space . New driver-assist software, cameras, and infotainment systems have made SUVs comfortable and luxurious for long-distance traveling. The SUVs on this list, however, are fun to drive, comfortable, and affordable, with space for the entire family.

13 2023 Jeep Cherokee

At a conservative starting price of $37,695, the new Jeep Cherokee is one of the most affordable new SUVs on the market . This is particularly great due to the amount of new technology and design that Jeep managed to pack into its new Cherokee. These include an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, four USB ports, navigation, satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system.

The 2023 Jeep Cherokee also comes standard with a broad array of niceties, including power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power lift gate. Those wanting even more luxuries should consider the optional Lux Elite package, which adds niceties like ventilated front seats, memory settings for the driver's seat, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power lift gate, and a nine-speaker Alpine premium audio system.

12 2023 Ford Expedition

The new Ford Expedition is perfect for large families , as it can comfortably fit up to eight people. The new Expedition is specially designed for long-distance traveling and, as such, comes standard with roof racks and a tow bar in case you need more storage space along the journey. These should come in handy, given the Expedition's rather paltry cargo volume (20.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 63.6 cubic feet with the third-row seats down, and 104.6 cubic feet with the third and second-row seats folded down).

While the Expedition is more expensive than other family SUVs, $55,725 (starting price) is not a bad price for the vehicle you're getting. The Expedition comes in a variety of different versions to fit your exact needs. However, there are a few features that are standard across the entire range. These include the Panoramic Vista Roof, power-reclining seats, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Base Expedition models also feature a power-adjustable driver's seat, a manually adjustable passenger seat, keyless entry with push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster display, LED headlights, and more. All these features make the Expedition a great large SUV for long-distance driving.

11 2023 Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevrolet Traverse is the perfect long-distance SUV from Chevrolet. This spacious SUV has three rows of seats and is perfect for the entire family . Although Chevy prices the Traverse similarly to vehicles such as the Jeep Cherokee, the midsize SUV is arguably the better deal due to the generous amount of space it provides.

The Traverse has 23 cubic feet of room behind its third row, 57.8 cubes behind the second row, and a maximum cargo volume of 98.2 cubic feet. This midsize SUV can also tow 5,000 pounds. What's more, the 2023 Traverse also comes with many driver-assist technologies, including lane-keep assist, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and rear-seat alert.

10 2023 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V has a long and trusted history in the SUV market . Having dominated the affordable segment of the market for decades, this family car has cemented its place in the hearts and minds of consumers as being the perfect family SUV. Starting at only $28,410, the compact SUV – having undergone a redesign for the 2023 model year – comes standard with an efficient 190-hp turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a smooth continuously variable automatic transmission.

The CR-V is not only one of the most fun-to-drive SUVs, but it also comes with numerous amenities, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone integration via wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Those desiring more advanced technologies should consider the range-topping Honda CR-V EX-L (starts at $34,260), which has a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, and an eight-speaker audio system.

9 2023 Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is one of the most underrated vehicles in the entire automotive industry . While Volvo has maintained a fairly low profile, its XC90 has consistently made headlines for being a safe and elegant family SUV – possessing some rather potent performance figures from the hybrid models. It is also a bit higher-end than most on this list, possessing a more up-market interior and build quality.

In addition to being a favorite of Jeremy Clarkson – who has owned three over the years – the large SUV from Volvo comes with space for up to seven people, all-wheel-drive, a panoramic roof, leather seats, 360-degree cameras, lane-keep assist, modern air filters, and even a Bowers & Wilkins sound system. This combination of minimalist styling, excellent sound quality, and frugal fuel economy makes the XC90 a brilliant daily driver – no matter if it's in the snowy forests of Sweden or the warm sunshine of Florida.

8 2023 Toyota Highlander

Toyota has made a name for itself in the SUV market over the last few years. One of the well-regarded SUVs from the brand is the Highlander . This midsize SUV comes in both hybrid and gas-powered models. Depending on the trim level, the Highlander can have everything you can ever dream of for your entire journey.

These include a panoramic moon roof, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a hands-free power lift gate, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Qi-compatible wireless chargers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charger, navigation, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system. The 2023 Toyota Highlander also has a respectable amount of space for your cargo. With all seats upright, you get 16 cubic feet of room. However, if that's not sufficient, you can fold down the third row to increase the cargo-carrying capacity to 48.4 cubic feet or fold down both rear rows to create 84.3 cubic feet of room.

7 2023 BMW X5

The BMW X5 wasn't the start of the SUV craze, but it was the vehicle that elevated the SUV segment into the stratosphere by showing that a tall-riding model can be just as comfortable and luxurious as a sedan. BMW likes to categorize its X5 model as a sports activity vehicle (SAV) instead of an SUV. While this is mainly creative marketing, the X5 does differentiate itself from the rest of the segment in its performance and styling. While many other SUVs are clean and minimal on the exterior, the BMW is loud, aggressive, and proud – especially in the X5 M trim.

The X5 has some seriously impressive numbers behind it as well. The 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-6 in the base xDrive40i makes a respectable 330 hp, with the hybrid 45e and 50e models bumping this to 390 and 480 hp respectively. The V8 xDrive50i makes 450 hp with the M50i going to 530 hp – just before the outrageous 591 and 617 hp of the X5 M and X5 M Competition models. The X5 is one of the best SUVs on the market today, offering excellent performance and handling, but also comfortable driving – both in town and on the highway.

6 2023 Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade is the go-to American luxury SUV and the current fifth-generation model is the best it has ever been. The Escalade gets various seating arrangements, including the awesome second-row 'Captain's Chairs', which are simply great to spend a lot of time in. While the previous model was great, the current one just looks better and more regal – less like a re-bodied GMC Sierra and more like a proper luxury SUV worthy of the name.

The Escalade comes – as standard – with the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 producing 420 hp. For the first time ever, the Escalade also gets a turbo-diesel engine and a supercharged V8. The turbo-diesel is a 3.0-liter straight-6 producing 305 hp, while the supercharged V8 on the other side of the spectrum produces an incredible 682 hp for the top-spec Escalade-V model. We wouldn't at all mind spending hours on end driving the big sports SUV.

5 2023 Lincoln Navigator

Although Lincoln isn’t as popular as Jeep and Chevrolet, their Navigator is a serious competitor in the premium segment. Stacking up to larger SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon XL, the Navigator can comfortably seat eight people and achieve over 20 miles to the gallon. The Navigator doesn't get a V8 engine like most of its rivals, but the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged Ecoboost V6 does a pretty good job of powering this beast.

The interior of the Navigator is where it sets itself apart from the competition . The Lincoln features one of the biggest and brightest digital displays on the market – both on the center console and in front of the driver, with an all-digital gauge cluster. It also sports near-infinitely adjustable electric seats, helping to get just the right position for long trips. The Navigator may be getting on now for around five years, but its replacement is definitely in the works and will likely show the Cadillac Escalade how to do American luxury.

4 2023 Kia Telluride

The Telluride from Kia is one of the most exciting midsize SUVs in years , especially after undergoing a mid-cycle refresh. This SUV embraces the future from its design through to the entire cabin. This Kia comes standard with a head-up display, space for eight passengers, a large 12.3-inch touchscreen, five USB ports, and the latest in safety technology from Kia.

In addition to this, the Telluride features high-quality materials for the ultimate luxury finish. Plus, Kia paid great attention to the fit and finish of this vehicle, making it a bargain at $35,890. The price makes the 2023 Kia Telluride one of the most affordable new large SUVs on the market – without losing any of the things that makes it a great vehicle.

3 2023 Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga is still in its first generation but received an update in 2020 that upped the luxury and styling. The Bentayga is the Bentley model with the most engine options, ranging from a 446 hp V6 hybrid to a mighty 540 hp V8 and topping off with a big 626 hp W12. All engines are twin-turbocharged and the model even gets a diesel engine in Europe.

The Bentayga is nearly the last word in SUV luxury – only out-purified by the Rolls-Royce Cullinan – and is one of the fastest high-riders on the market. It also has supremely comfortable suspension tuning to iron out the bumps and undulations, as well as soft leather seats and a dashboard swathed in leather, metal and wood. The Bentayga is a great place to spend hours upon hours, crossing continents and mountains in the process.

2 2023 Genesis GV70

While the Bentley Bentayga is great, it costs from an eye-watering $200,000 – or enough money for nearly ten Toyota Corollas. For around a quarter of the price, the Genesis GV70 is available. It is slightly smaller than the Bentayga, but it offers all the luxury and practicality you would ever need.

Granted, the performance isn't quite there, but the 2.5- and 3.5-liter turbocharged engines provide enough oomph to keep things interesting. The GV70 has the same level of design intrigue as the Bentayga – even more so according to many journalists – and it is definitely more dependable than the European luxo-barge. All-in-all, the GV70 is a brilliantly designed SUV and one of the best value-for-money deals on the market .

1 2023 Land Rover Range Rover

The Range Rover is currently the best SUV on the market. It is the SUV equivalent to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class – fancy enough to get noticed, but not glitzy like the Bentley Flying Spur or Rolls-Royce Phantom. The current Range Rover is more minimalist than the previous model, but features better technologies and performance.

Under the hood there is a choice of 6- and 8-cylinder engines – the latter borrowed from BMW. The hybrid now gets the new straight-6 and there is even a fully-electric version coming in the near future. The interior is as minimalist as the exterior, with big screens on the dashboard and supple leather adorning the entire interior. The Range Rover may cost from a ridiculous $108,750 , but it is worth the expense, especially when traveling long distances.

In America, personal vehicles are by far the most common way of traveling. The vast majority of Americans own cars and use them for daily commuting to work, school, and other destinations. In fact, owning a car is often seen as a necessity rather than a luxury in many parts of the country.

There are several reasons why personal vehicles are so popular in America. Firstly, the sheer size of the country makes it difficult to rely solely on public transportation. In many areas, public transportation options are limited, and it can be time-consuming and inconvenient to get around without a car. Having a personal vehicle gives Americans the freedom to travel whenever and wherever they need to.

Another reason for the popularity of personal vehicles is the convenience they offer. With a car, you can avoid the hassle of waiting for buses or trains, and you have the flexibility to leave at any time that suits you. Whether you need to run errands, pick up groceries, or simply get to work, having a car makes life much easier and more efficient.

Furthermore, personal vehicles provide a level of comfort and privacy that public transportation simply cannot match. You have control over the temperature, music, and overall environment of your car, which can make your daily commute more enjoyable. Additionally, traveling in your own car allows you to avoid crowded spaces and noisy passengers, creating a more peaceful and relaxed journey.

Owning a car also offers a sense of independence and self-reliance. Instead of relying on others or adhering to public transportation schedules, you have the freedom to go wherever you like, whenever you like. This independence is especially important in rural areas, where public transportation options may be scarce. With a personal vehicle, you are not limited by geographical constraints and can explore the great outdoors or visit family and friends in far-off places.

However, it is worth noting that owning a car comes with its own set of responsibilities. Along with the initial cost of purchasing a vehicle, there are also ongoing expenses such as fuel, maintenance, insurance, and parking. Despite these expenses, many Americans find that the benefits of owning a car far outweigh the costs.

In conclusion, personal vehicles are the most common way of traveling in America. They offer convenience, comfort, and independence that public transportation cannot match. While owning a car may come with expenses, many Americans consider it a necessity for daily commuting and navigating the vast expanse of the country.

How to Set Up a Travel Flag with Bank of America

In America, air travel is the most common way to travel long distances within the country. Domestic flights are frequent and readily available, with a well-developed network of airports connecting major cities and smaller towns alike.

One of the primary reasons for the popularity of air travel in America is the vast distances between cities. Driving or taking a train can be time-consuming and exhausting, especially for journeys that span several hundred or even thousands of miles. Domestic flights provide a faster and more convenient alternative, allowing travelers to reach their destinations quickly and comfortably.

Another reason why air travel is so common in America is the extensive coverage of the country's airspace. From major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago to smaller towns and remote locations, airports are ubiquitous throughout the country. This means that no matter where you are or where you want to go, chances are there is an airport nearby that can connect you to your desired destination.

Furthermore, domestic flights in America are often affordable and offer a range of options to suit different budgets and preferences. Several low-cost airlines operate in the country, providing budget-friendly fares for price-conscious travelers. Major airlines also offer various fare classes, allowing passengers to choose between economy, premium economy, business, and first-class cabins, depending on their needs and preferences.

To make air travel even more attractive, many domestic flights in America offer amenities and services to enhance the travel experience. Airlines provide in-flight entertainment systems, comfortable seating, and onboard dining options, ensuring that passengers are well taken care of during their journey.

Additionally, the efficiency of air travel is another factor that makes it the most common way to travel in America. Airports have streamlined procedures, including check-in and security processes, making the entire experience relatively hassle-free. Domestic flights also tend to adhere to strict schedules, minimizing delays and ensuring that passengers arrive at their destinations on time.

Overall, air travel is the most common way to travel long distances in America. The extensive coverage of airports, affordability, convenience, and efficiency of domestic flights make it the preferred choice for many travelers. Whether you're planning a business trip, family vacation, or weekend getaway, consider taking a domestic flight to make your journey a smooth and enjoyable one.

The Best Skincare Lines with Travel Sizes for On-the-Go Beauty Needs

When it comes to traveling in America, there are numerous options available. However, one of the most common and beloved ways to explore the country is through road trips. Road trips offer the freedom to travel at your own pace, discover hidden gems, and make spontaneous stops along the way. Whether you're driving through scenic landscapes or visiting famous landmarks, road trips provide a unique and immersive experience unlike any other.

The vastness of America makes road trips an ideal choice for travelers who want to see as much of the country as possible. With a well-planned itinerary, you can visit multiple destinations in a single trip, experiencing different cultures, landscapes, and attractions. From the bustling cities of New York and San Francisco to the awe-inspiring natural wonders of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park, road trips allow you to explore the diverse beauty that America has to offer.

One of the biggest advantages of road trips is the flexibility they provide. Unlike other forms of travel, such as flying or taking a train, road trips allow you to make your own schedule and change it as you go. You can spend more time in a place that captivates you, or skip a stop if it doesn't meet your expectations. This flexibility allows you to truly immerse yourself in the places you visit and create a trip that is tailored to your preferences.

Additionally, road trips offer a sense of adventure and freedom that is hard to replicate. The open road stretches out in front of you, offering endless possibilities and opportunities for exploration. You can take detours to explore hidden attractions, take scenic routes that showcase the beauty of nature, or simply stop whenever you feel like stretching your legs. There is something liberating about the sense of control and independence that comes with being behind the wheel and charting your own course.

Another benefit of road trips is the affordability they offer. While the cost of gasoline and accommodations will be involved, road trips can still be more budget-friendly compared to other forms of travel. You can save money on flights, eliminate the need for expensive airport transfers, and even pack your own meals to cut down on dining expenses. Road trips also give you the flexibility to choose accommodations that fit your budget, whether it's camping, staying in budget motels, or splurging on luxury hotels.

To make the most of your road trip, it's important to plan ahead and be prepared. Research the routes you will be taking, ensuring that they offer the attractions and scenery you desire. Make a list of the must-see destinations along the way and allow for enough time to fully explore each one. It's also a good idea to have a general idea of where you will be staying each night, especially during peak travel seasons when accommodations may fill up quickly.

Additionally, consider the comfort of your vehicle for long drives. Make sure it is well-maintained and in good condition, checking the tires, brakes, and fluid levels before setting off. Stock up on road trip essentials such as snacks, water, a first aid kit, and a map or GPS system to ensure a smooth journey. Don't forget to bring entertainment options such as music, podcasts, or audiobooks to keep you entertained during the drive.

Overall, road trips offer a thrilling and immersive way to explore America. Whether you're traveling solo, with friends, or as a family, hitting the open road allows you to create unforgettable memories and discover new places. So grab a map, plan your route, and embark on an epic adventure across the diverse and beautiful landscapes of America. Your road trip awaits!

Long-Distance Medical Transport: A Guide to 7 Different Options

If you’re traveling and have medical concerns that require specialized transport, what are your options? Let’s dive in.

Published on May 21st, 2024 in Medical Evacuation

If you’re experiencing an emergency during your travels that requires you to seek long-distance medical transport, this guide is for you.

Medical emergencies are always stressful, of course, but if you’re out of your country and comfort zone, figuring out specialized travel arrangements can be particularly overwhelming.

A sudden fall or accident can turn a dream vacation into a living nightmare, and seeking out long-distance medical transportation can be a daunting process. But it can be necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for your loved one should the unthinkable occur.

You might be wondering how to ensure safe and comfortable travel for you or your loved ones, what it might cost, and what options are available.

This guide cuts through the confusion, offering you clear and actionable information on coordinating these vital services. From evaluating providers to understanding the in-transit care process, we’ve got your concerns covered.

What to expect during the transportation process

The experience you or a loved one has during long-distance medical transportation varies significantly depending on the type of transportation (more on that later), but there are a few general things you can expect. First off, the attending physician will provide the best transportation recommendation for the care you need. For instance, if you have a broken arm but still have some mobility, a nurse escort on a commercial flight might be the best option.

But for a life-threatening injury or illness, you may require an air ambulance.

The medical team will also help coordinate with your insurance provider or travel assistance company to see what type of transportation is covered or offered.

The next general factor of medical transportation is the team that’s involved. No matter which type of transportation you use, a team of experienced medical professionals takes charge of the patient’s well-being.

Throughout the journey, flight nurses or trained paramedics oversee the medical equipment and medication, ready to deliver essential care at any time. These healthcare practitioners closely monitor the patient’s vital signs, administering medications as needed, and are poised to respond to any medical emergencies that may arise mid-transit.

The transportation, whether it be ground ambulances or air transport, is chosen based on a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical condition, urgency, the travel distance, and the care level required during the transfer.

Another constant presence in long-distance medical transport is state-of-the-art medical equipment. From basic life support to advanced life support, to equipment used in critical care units are tailored to meet the diverse medical needs of patients and to provide the appropriate range of medical monitoring and care.

All vehicles come equipped with advanced safety features like airbags and wheelchair restraints, ensuring that during transit, the patient’s safety is never compromised.

The commitment to travel safely is further reinforced through regular checks and maintenance protocols, establishing a foundation of trust and reliability.

Factors that influence the cost of long-distance medical transport

Navigating the financial landscape of long-distance medical transport can be as complex as the medical conditions it serves.

A significant determinant of cost is the mode of transport chosen.

A commercial aircraft with a flight nurse can be cost-effective, whereas an air ambulance may be a pricier but medically necessary alternative. Commercial airlines, of course, have a shared pricing model where all the passengers ‘chip in’ so to speak, but with an air ambulance you will likely be the only passenger; hence the cost. Additionally, there is a significant difference in the cost to run and maintain different aircraft types (jets vs. small propeller planes) that also plays a role.

And of course, the patient’s specific medical requirements, including the level of medical support and the type of discharge from the sending facility, also play a pivotal role in defining the cost structure of the medical transport needed.

Moreover, the journey’s start and end points significantly influence the cost, with international transports that require border crossing or longer distances naturally incurring higher expenses.

Time sensitivity can also add to the cost; urgent or last-minute requests often come with a premium, reflecting the additional resources needed to accommodate such expedited services.

Types of long-distance medical transport vehicles

When it comes to long-distance medical transport, there are several options depending on the medical condition of the patient, the distance to be traveled, and specific medical needs.

Here are some of the main types of long-distance medical transport available:

1. Air Ambulance

An air ambulance is an aircraft specially equipped to quickly transport sick or injured patients over long distances, varying terrain, in a medically controlled environment and are outfitted with specialized medical equipment, similar to an ICU.

More info on air ambulances here .

This option is ideal for emergency situations where time is critical, such as severe trauma, acute medical emergencies, or when a patient must quickly reach a facility that offers specialized care that is unavailable locally.

The cost for these services can be great, and it’s not always clear if a standard health insurance plan will cover it. Specialized travel insurance or travel assistance memberships can help arrange an air ambulance transport and either cover or supplement the cost.

EA+ is the Best and Highly Recommended! When we signed up in 2019, we had no idea the importance of that decision.

This December, while finally taking our dream vacation to Fiji, my husband experienced a medical crisis. I immediately called EA+ and I cannot state emphatically enough how grateful I am for the immediate help I received.

Everyone I dealt with was exceptionally proficient in their capacity every step of the way. This was invaluable to me, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this took so much pressure and stress off my shoulders. We had to be medically evacuated to New Zealand for adequate care and EA+ found an apartment for me that was perfectly located near the hospital and airport.

I am grateful to the team that came in like the cavalry. All was seamless. EA+ is the best and highly recommended! – Lance N., Louisiana

2. Commercial airline with nurse escort

Some commercial airlines are equipped with a section of the airplane to accommodate medical transportation depending on the patient’s stable medical condition and ability to travel at high altitude

Commercial airline stretcher services are specialized wheelchair services suitable for patients who are not in critical condition but need to travel lying down or with more space and are stable enough to handle the rigors of a commercial flight.

This is often used for non-emergency medical repatriations or when transferring patients over international distances.

A nurse escort (also called a medical escort) involves a health professional accompanying a patient on a commercial flight, providing necessary medical support in-flight. The patient can travel seated and is generally stable but may need assistance with medications, mobility, or monitoring.

If you are going to use a commercial airline, notify the airline as early as possible, ideally at booking or at least 48 hours before departure. Airlines often require a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) filled out by your doctor and may need medical clearance for certain conditions.

If you need supplemental oxygen, check for approved Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) and necessary documentation. Carry all essential medication and supplies in your carry-on luggage, along with prescriptions.

Arrive early at the airport for extra check-in and security time. Inform check-in staff of your needs for assistance with boarding, deplaning, and navigating the airport. During security screening, notify staff of any medical devices.

Once onboard, inform flight attendants of your needs; they can assist and use medical kits if necessary.

Upon arrival, airline staff can help with disembarking and navigating the airport, and some airports have medical facilities for immediate assistance. Coordinating with the airline and preparing in advance ensures your medical needs are met throughout your journey.

3. Non-emergency medical transport (NEMT)

NEMT services provide transportation for patients who do not require immediate medical care but need assistance getting to and from medical facilities for appointments or treatments.

Vehicles used range from specially equipped vans to ambulances, depending on the patient’s needs.

This service is ideal for individuals with mobility issues, those who require regular treatments like chemotherapy or dialysis, or those who need post-operative transport for follow-up visits.

4. Long-distance ground ambulance

This service uses ambulances equipped to handle longer journeys, providing necessary medical care en route.

Long-distance ground ambulances can be used for patients who need continuous medical supervision, such as those with unstable vital signs, requiring intravenous therapy, or on ventilators, and the destination is accessible by road.

5. Train ambulance services

In some regions, train carriages are fitted with medical facilities to transport patients over long distances. Train ambulances are railway carriages converted into mobile medical units to transport patients over long distances.

This option provides a stable and smooth environment, suitable for patients who need a comfortable setting, are in a stable condition, and where the rail network can efficiently connect the origin and destination cities.

6. Mobile intensive care units (ICUs)

These are advanced ambulances equipped like a hospital ICU to provide high-level medical care. They are staffed with specialized medical personnel and used to transport critically ill patients who need intensive care during transport but are traveling to a destination reachable by road.

This is chosen in situations where air transport is not necessary or practical but the patient requires continuous, intensive medical monitoring and treatment.

Each of these options offers different levels of care and comfort, and the choice depends on the specific health requirements of the patient, the urgency of travel, and the budget available. It’s important for consumers to consult with healthcare professionals to choose the most appropriate type of medical transport for their specific situation.

In many cases when you need long-distance medical transport, you won’t have time to interview dozens of providers. This is because the transportation will often be tied to an urgent medical situation. The process itself may take coordinating with multiple parties, sending paperwork and clearances, and arranging transportation before and after the medical transport. It can become complex and even overwhelming.

Additionally, the process is not quite the same as ordering a taxi. It’s expensive, and you’ll want to make sure that cost is covered somehow.

This is where Emergency Assistance Plus (EA+) can be a game-changer. EA+ is a travel assistance membership that offers a network of professionals equipped to arrange medical transport for you and your loved ones during medical emergencies when traveling.

Whether it’s organizing an air ambulance, helping you avoid high transport costs, or providing access to medical professionals who ensure safe and comfortable transport, EA+ is designed to handle the uncertainties so you can focus on what truly matters—the health and well-being of your loved one.

Brooks Ghost 15

Ghost 15

The Brooks Ghost 15's continues to reign supreme in our testing for offering neutral support with excellent arch support. This pair is available in narrow, wide and extra-wide sizing to ensure a proper fit in the toe box. The larger heel drop helps lessen impact when striking the ground to minimize rear foot and Achilles tendon pain.

We found this pair comfortable when walking, running and even during gym workouts. I regularly reach for this pair when working out at the gym as they're comfortable to wear when walking on the treadmill and during a strength training session. Plus, compared to other more stable shoes, I like the sleeker appearance. "The shoe felt supportive while standing for long periods of time (like at a concert) as well as when walking around a city,” said one tester. Another tester with chronic foot pain said she usually finds "no shoes comfortable to wear, but these are amazing."

All testers gave this pair high marks for comfort and fit. "The mesh material allows for a more breathable shoe, which is great for when I am using them for long distance walking," said one tester who wore this pair on multi-hour walks. Another tester even said, "My feet were never sore and I walked A LOT with these." This pair isn't suited for someone who prefers thick cushioning.

Under Armour Charged Assert 10

Charged Assert 10

Most walking shoes retail for over $100, meanwhile this pair from Under Armour is about half that. It’s an extremely popular style with nearly 5,000 reviews on Amazon. Featuring a classic design, breathable knit upper and a soft sock liner, this pair is designed to be versatile enough for park strolls or fitness classes. We appreciate the three width options and the tons of colors to choose from, including neutrals, blues and purples. Testers liked the thicker compression molded foam cushioning, but some found it too firm. “All the cushioning made my foot feel comfortable during casual wear — running errands and such,” reported one tester. He also said they’re “excellent shoes for standing at my standing desk for long periods of time."

ASICS Gel-Cumulus 26 Running Shoe

Gel-Cumulus 26 Running Shoe

In both our walking and running shoe tests, ASICS sneakers continue to be top performers. With ample cushioning, the foam is gel-infused for improved shock absorption. We love the addition of a padded back tab by the heel for extra comfort and ankle stability. Keep in mind this shoe isn’t designed for those who overpronate (meaning the foot rolls inward).

I found this pair just as comfortable out of the box as I did 10,000 steps later. I especially loved the lightweight feel and sleek design that paired beautifully with my activewear outfits, making this a great shoe to wear all day long. Testers especially liked that these shoes were easy to slip on when heading out the door and they felt totally secure on walks. One tester said, "I love the cushioning and look of these sneakers.” Another added, "They are very lightweight given the amount of support they have."

Hoka Clifton 9

Clifton 9

HOKA is synonymous with comfortable cushioning — and for good reason. The brand’s signature cushioning is extremely popular among our testers and for helping to alleviate joint pain for comfortable walking mile after mile. The CMEVA foam and early meta stage rocker design helps propel you forward and maintain a responsive toe-off on walks and runs.

"They felt immediately comfortable from the first wear," said one tester. He added that they "don't flare up my plantar fasciitis and my feet feel actively supported during long periods of exercise." Testers gave this pair perfect scores for comfortable cushioning with many saying this is their new go-to pair. One GH Institute analyst wears this pairs regularly on walks because of how well the shoes cushion and support her feet. “These shoes put a spring in my step,” said one tester who wore this pair on treadmill and road walks.

After interviewing dozens of walkers, HOKA was one of the most popular brands with survey respondents loving the plush cushioning, although some wished the shoes felt more stable and weren't so pricey.

Stay light on your feet with this pair from On Running. You can choose between traditional and stretchy laces to easily slip them on when heading out the door. Designed for soft landings without a bulky foam midsole, this pair uses the brand’s CloudTec cushioning.

I appreciated that this shoe was instantly comfy out of the box. I wore it on long walks around my neighborhood and was impressed how comfortable it was with such a sleek, minimal design. We also tested the waterproof version of this shoe, which testers liked to wear in rainy weather, but sais it wasn’t as breathable. Testers reported that this pair is easy to put on with multiple testers who highlighted the lightweight feel. "I like the flexible design of the sole, [which] allows the shoe to be a bit more responsive to whatever is underfoot," said one tester. He added, "They have a great look to them and feel very sturdy on my foot!" Some testers noted that because they're so flexible, they weren't supportive enough for their needs.

Another tester said, “The shoes are impressively lightweight and I thought they wouldn't offer enough support, but they were surprisingly comfortable.” I personally don't love the appearance of these shoes on my feet, but testers mostly liked their look.

Ryka Womens Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe

Womens Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe

Ryka shoes are designed using exclusively female foot models to ensure a proper fit for women walkers. This pair features a segmented outsole for improved traction on different types of terrain, even gym flooring,. When podiatrists evaluated this shoe, they noted that this pair is great for walking because it offers good mobility with soft cushioning , but one said the foam didn't appear as durable as other styles.

Testers gave this pair perfect scores for cushioning and support. One tester was especially impressed with "how lightweight and breathable these were," while another called them "sleek [and] stylish." One tester said wearing these shoes was akin to "walking on clouds."

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 V13 Running Shoe

Fresh Foam X 1080 V13 Running Shoe

Avoid a cramped toe box by opting for wide shoes. This New Balance pair is available in wide and extra-wide sizing to prevent any crowding. Plus, they feature a stretchy knit upper that helps avoid pinching around bunions.

I have tested a few different New Balance sneakers and this pair has the thickest cushioning out of the lot. When wearing this pair, I feel like I have a spring in my step, propelling me forward for easy walking. However, I prefer the look of my other sneakers as these look a bit clunky, and several testers agreed.

Giving this pair perfect scores for fit, comfort and cushioning, testers logged over 60 hours walking in these sneakers. "I find myself reaching for this pair over all of my other running and walking shoes whenever I leave my home," reported one tester. "I felt like it gave me a boost on long walks and hill work," said another tester. "My feet felt less tired and it definitely gives a spring to the step." Another called them "very lightweight and breathable."

ALTRA VIA Olympus 2 Road Running Shoe

VIA Olympus 2 Road Running Shoe

If you're a fitness walker who wants to invest in a pair of comfortable shoes, these Altra sneakers are worth checking out. When I evaluated these sneakers in the Lab, I immediately noticed their' unique shape; these shoes are designed to mimic your foot's natural shape to prevent any pinching or crowding in the toe box.

The rocker design is ideal for walkers as it helps propel you forward. This style has thicker, lightweight cushioning compared to Altra's other offerings with the brand's classic zero heel drop design.

"I really like the natural toe-box shape which helps a lot to let my foot relax and push off my toe," said one tester. Another added, "They are extremely comfortable and cushion my feet." She even said, "I do not have pain with them at the end of 12 hours, which can happen with other shoes I wear."

All testers gave high marks for comfort and many noted that the foam felt soft, but some didn't like the appearance. Plus, at 9.6 oz, the shoes is on the heavy side.

Kizik Athens Hands Free Mens or Womens Sneakers

Athens Hands Free Mens or Womens Sneakers

Kizik designs slip-on sneakers that are completely hands-free, ideal for anyone with mobility concerns. They feature the brand's signature flexible silicone cage on the heel that bounces back into place after you step into the shoe. This gender-neutral sneaker is available in a wide range of sizes with five color options.

All testers applauded how easy this pair is to put on and take off. "You really can just jump into them," reported one tester. "It's very convenient for when I realize I only have a minute to run to the school and pick up my daughter." Another tester with Parkinson's told us that Kizik sneakers are easier for him to get on than any of his other shoes.

"They fit me well and are comfortable for long walks," said one tester and another added, "They're also very comfortable, like walking on clouds." Some testers noted that this pair isn't as supportive as their usual sneakers, so they don't recommend wearing these while running.

Brooks Glycerin 21 Neutral Running Shoe

Glycerin 21 Neutral Running Shoe

Anyone with plantar fasciitis knows the difficulty of finding a truly comfortable shoe that supports your arches and reduces heel pain. This pair from Brooks came out on top among our testers with plantar fasciitis for offering excellent arch support and stability. While some Brooks shoes are firmer, this pair has soft, thick cushioning for a cloud-like feel with neutral support.

"The plush cushioning immediately felt comfortable from when I first put them on," said one tester after wearing this pair for over 50 hours. "They haven’t flared up my plantar fasciitis at all, even after many hours of wear and several miles." He even added, "On the days I wear this pair, my feet feel so much more comfortable by the end of the day."

While testers applauded the pair's comfortable feel, they received lower appearance scores and one said they looked "bulky."

Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

Endorphin Pro 4

If you're lacing up your shoes for a 10+ mile walk, make sure you have a pair that'll support your feet and feel responsive after long distances — like this Saucony pick. T he responsive foam and carbon plate in the midsole helps return energy to your feet while propelling you forward , especially important when covering longer distances. This new launch is currently available in only limited sizing and colors with no wide widths.

"I liked the stability of the sneakers and they felt very supportive while running," reported one tester after wearing this pair on both walks and runs. "I also enjoyed the lightweight mesh fabric and how the tongue was attached to the body of the sneaker and wasn't a separate piece."

All testers agreed that this pair had an attractive design with ample cushioning that stayed in good condition after multiple runs. "I love how lightweight the shoes are; they feel like air," said one tester who especially liked wearing this pair when sprinting. "The strong mesh upper allows my feet to breathe easily."

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

best long distance travel vehicle

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

best long distance travel vehicle

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).
