What is it like traveling on the Cusco to Puno Bus with Inka Express on our way to Lake Titicaca? It was incredible! Check out everything we saw!

We spent a few days in Cusco and the Sacred Valley after checking off our bucket list adventure of doing a Machu Picchu tour . Next up on our South America adventure was a visit to Lake Titicaca Peru with kids . But how do we get to South America’s largest lake? It turns out that the Cusco to Puno bus with Inka Express was the perfect option for us. You can read our entire two-week Peru itinerary here .

How to Get From Cusco to Puno

Table of Contents

When Kuoda Travel suggested that we take the Inka Express tour bus with kids to get from Cusco to Puno I was very apprehensive. How would the boys do on a 9+ hour ride on a crowded tourist bus? I inquired about alternatives to the bus. There were 3 three other possibilities: private car, plane or train.

Option 1: Hire a private car with driver

This was my first inkling as we were touring the rest of Peru with a driver. However, the cost was outside of our budget. This option would be great for avoiding tourist crowds. Private car tours are excellent since they allow you the ability to stop on demand and explore with much more freedom.

Of course, it is also possible to hire your own car and do a self-drive. This was not feasible for us as we had arrangements from Puno on. The fees we would have incurred for the one-way drop would have made the self-drive option also outside of our budget.

Option 2: Fly from Cusco to Juliaca

It is not actually possible to fly directly to Puno. Instead, you have to fly to the neighboring town of Juliaca. Although the nonstop flight is only an hour-long, time at the airport and the drive from Juliaca to Puno make this option longer than it seems at first. Although, the plane option does save some time over the bus ride. Ultimately though, we decided not to go this route as it would mean missing out on some amazing sites along the way.

Option 3: Riding the Andean Explorer train from Cusco to Puno

Taking the Andean Explorer  train from Cusco to Puno would have been a luxurious way to travel. The trip takes 10.5 hours and although it follows the road most of the way, it only makes one stop. While this Cusco to Puno train might be relaxing, from a sightseeing perspective, a Cusco to Puno bus is the best option for those wanting to experience Peru.

The Inka Express

Many buses in South America operate in a more similar fashion to airlines than what I’m used to in North America. There are various class levels from budget to luxury. But the luxury tour buses in South America are often still very reasonably priced. On top of that, they often offer high-class seating, refreshments, and even a host/hostess.

The Inca Express Cusco to Puno bus was billed as a luxury bus that provides comfortable seats and beverages. The bus did not disappoint. The Inka Express bus was clean and comfortable. The well-padded seats also reclined so the boys did not have any issues finding nap time on the road . Much to my surprise, there was also a server/hostess that traveled with us from Cusco to Sicuani (the halfway point of the trip). Another hostess joined us from Sicuani to Puno. After each stop, we were offered a beverage.

Our choices included: Inka Cola, water, coca tea or coffee. Just like in a plane, you could also ask for a beverage at any time. We encouraged the boys to drink lots so as to avoid altitude sickness. Luckily, there was no need to worry about having too much fluid either. There was a washroom on board.

Pro-Tip: You can purchase a bus ticket that includes the entrance fees to all the stops. However, if you choose not to, it is also possible to pay for the entrance fees to only the sites you want to see on the bus. Our driver collected the fees (cash only) at the start of the trip.

The Route of the Sun: Sightseeing on the Cusco to Puno Bus

The tourist route from Cusco to Puno is also dubbed the Route of the Sun . The distance from Cusco to Puno is 380 km but the ride on the tourist bus takes almost 10 hrs. This is because the bus stops every couple of hours to offer a chance to explore the fascinating sites along the way.

We were picked up at the hotel by 6 am to be driven to the bus station. Although we had pre-purchased our tickets, we still had to check-in at the on-site ticket office before falling in line. With assigned seating, getting to our seats was a breeze.

Andahuaylillas (elevation: 3093 m)

After going 45 km outside of Cusco, we had our first stop was in the village of Andahuaylillas. The village is known for its church, Iglesia de San Pedro, also known as the Cusquenian Sixtine Chapel or the Sistine Chapel of the Americas.

An adobe clad spanish style baroque church with a stone base is lit by the sun in Andahuaylillas Peru

Pro-Tip: Entrance to the church is 10 soles. If you do not want to enter the church, you don’t have to pay the fee and can wander around the square in front of the Iglesia de San Pedro.

It was disappointing to find out that we were not allowed to take photos inside the church. In lieu of this, we were provided with a CD full of photos and videos. The baroque interior was filled with carvings and paintings. Many were laden in gold-leaf. A guided tour is part of the entrance fee. We learned that the church has a guard round the clock to protect all the gold and silver treasures that are said to be held in the church.

Suspension Bridge Inca and Colonial Checacupe (elevation: 3414 m)

Next, we stopped in the Colonial town of Checacupe. The town has a church which we, unfortunately, didn’t have time to visit as we were in line to cross the replica Inca bridge in town. We were glad to have seen this bridge as we didn’t have time to visit the Q’eswachaka Rope Bridge in Quehue, Peru. Although the Urubamba river below didn’t look too fast, the bridge certainly looked intimidating at first glance. But C was insistent that he cross the shaky bridge by himself. Have a look at the video at the bottom of the page to see how well he did!

Archaeological Complex of Raqchi (elevation: 3475 m)

Our final stop before lunch was the small village of Raqchi (San Pedro de Cacha) to view the Inca ruin of Raqchi. The entrance fee was 10 soles. Upon entry, we immediately caught sight of the Temple of Wiracocha (also known as the Temple of Raqchi ). Wiracocha was a deity and according to the Incas, he was the creator god. The temple was built in his honor. It stands an enormous 92 m long (302ft) and 25.5 m wide (84ft). The Temple once had 22 columns (11 on each side) of stone blocks which held up the largest known Inca roof.

The towering 14 meter high Inca ruins of Raqchi Peru stand out against the blue sky on a stop on the Cusco to Puno bus

After the Temple, we visited the rest of the complex, thought to be one of the largest Inca sites to be discovered. There were living quarters, storehouses, and even ceremonial baths. The kids really enjoyed going around pretending to be archaeologists, taking pictures and discovering the site for the first time.

A young boy takes a photograph of inca silos in Raqchi Peru during the Cusco to Puno bus tour in Peru

After going inside the archaeological complex for our guided tour, we walked around the square were many locals were selling pottery. We learned that the townspeople are expert potters and many of the decorative pieces sold in Pisac and Chinchero come from Raqchi. We also stopped to admire the town church before hopping onto the bus.

Sicuani (elevation: 3542 m)

Our next stop was for lunch. We stopped in the town of Sicuani, the capital of the province of Canshis, where a buffet restaurant that caters to tourists is set up. There was a small but interesting museum at the upper level of the building that held the restaurant. They had displays explaining Peruvian culture. After a brief visit, it was time for lunch.

The price of the buffet was included in the cost of the bus tour along with hot drinks (tea and coffee). Juices and other cold beverages were charged extra. There was a nice selection of food. The boys had no issues at all finding something to eat from the soup, to the main dishes, and dessert. In fact, I think they gave all the dessert choices two thumbs up.

La Raya (elevation: 4338 m)

Our first stop after lunch brought us to the highest point in our journey, La Raya. The area also marks the division between the departments of Cusco and Puno.

A Peruvian Quechua woman stands with a llama next to a sign in La Raya Peru on the Cusco to Puno bus tour

A small market was set up at the stop selling typical Peruvian wares such as sweaters, hats, scarves, and decorative rugs. We only had a few minutes to enjoy the majestic view of the snowy peaks of Apu Chimboya and take pictures. It certainly took our breath!

Pro-Tip:  The Inka Express is also equipped with an oxygen tank on board in case anybody had not yet fully acclimatized. Good thing they did as somebody on our bus tour needed it.

Pukara (elevation: 3879 m)

The last stop before Puno would be the village of Pukara (Pucara). The town is famous for its talented ceramists who craft the “ Toritos de Pucara ” or the little bulls of Pucara which can often be found adorning rooftops in houses in Peru. We also saw them adorning the fence surrounding the church of Pukara . Unfortunately, the church was closed at the time of our visit.

Church adorned with bull frescoes and statues in Pukara Peru on the Cusco to Puno bus in Peru

Across from the church was the Pucara Stone Museum (Museo Litico de Pucara).  There were some amazingly intact pieces of stonework and pottery that were from pre-Inca times. The source of the pieces was the archaeological complex Pucara found further up the road from the museum. Unfortunately, the archaeological complex was not part of the bus tour.

The museum rooms were tiny and the boys felt a little claustrophobic during the guided tour. They enjoyed the self-tour of the grounds, where several larger stone pieces were also displayed, much more.

How to Survive the Tourist bus with Kids

The last leg of our journey was just over an hour long. Before we knew it, it was 5 pm and we were pulling into the bus station in Puno. Even with all the sites, we visited, there was much more we wish we had time to see and explore.

The bus ride was comfortable. Also, the number of stops ensured the kids were not bored on the journey. We had some snacks for the journey, including some chocolates we made in the ChocoMuseo in Cusco . Having drinks freely available on board ensures that the kids stayed well hydrated.

C rides the Cusco to Puno bus with Inka Express

The one thing that was disappointing though was that the bus did not have in-seat power outlets. C enjoys listening to his audio books on long drives and as the ride was almost 10 hrs long, it would have been nice to have some place to keep iPads and cell phones charged. Have you been on a long bus ride with kids?

We looked at this bus ride with the same trepidation as you. 9 hours on a bus... are you nuts? We also had no idea about the stops along the way and what a great surprise they were. Totally agree that they really know how to run the bus services along this route.

Looks like a super solid tourisma bus Christina. And the views are just gorgeous. I only spent 2 weeks in Cusco and sometimes gazed at the surrounding Andes in awe, being stunned at the inspired beauty of the place. I hopped between Lima and Cusco via plane but the bus option looks best to Puno for seeing the sights and all that good stuff. Fabulous snaps.

The experience is truly unique as we journey from an imperial city to the border with the neighboring country of Bolivia. There are beautiful places worth visiting along the way:

  • Andahuaylillas Church:   Known as the Sistine Chapel of America due to its artistic finishes. It’s a colonial construction with a simple structure featuring three stone-carved crosses on the facade. The interior boasts original works such as the penta-lingual door, created by Cusco artists.
  • Raqchi Archaeological Park: Also known as the “Temple of Wiracocha” or the “Inca Parthenon,” it’s an important Incan archaeological site from the 15th century. It stands out for its bold engineering and is considered one of the most impressive works by the Incas. The complex includes the imposing Temple to the God Wiracocha, a majestic stone and mud construction showcasing the greatness of the Incan State. The archaeological area is extensive and complex, featuring elements like the military barracks, the priestly core, granaries, and the Inca baths, among others.
  • Pukara:  Located near the city of Puno. This is where the famous “Pukara Bulls” are made, traditionally hung on house doors as a good luck charm. • amitkumar1490 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredible sites and guide! Michael is an amazing your guide and he made our two days in Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu just awesome! Michael is passionate about sharing the history of Peru and clearly very knowledgeable, particularly about the archaeology. He shared with us so many interesting stories and pieces of history, while keeping things moving at a good pace. I was impressed by how much we learned so quickly. These two days were definitely my favorite days in Peru - Machu Picchu speaks for itself, but Day 1 in the animal sanctuary and Sacred Valley were awesome. I also think being with Michael made our experience a lot more fun and informative than it would have been with another guide. I loved this tour and would definitely recommend having Michael as your guide!! Read more Written May 26, 2024

Cusco to Puno by Tourist Bus

A 3 sentence summary.

One of the most popular and cost effective ways to travel between Cusco and Puno (Lake Titicaca) or vice-versa is aboard a Cusco to Puno Tourist Bus. There are a couple bus companies that offer the 10 hour route, which stops at various points of interest along the way. We think that Wonder Bus Expeditions offers the best service.

Cusco (3,400 m.a.s.l / 11,155 f.a.s.l)

Either the start or end point of the trip. Buses typically departing around 7.15 am or arrive around 5pm. Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, and was once the most important city in the continent.

Andahuaylillas (3,198 m.a.s.l / 10,492 f.a.s.l)

In the small village of Andahuaylillas 50 minutes from Cusco  the bus stops for 30 minutes visit to the church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas. Named as the Sistine Chapel of the America´s, due to its high quality art work, the church houses exquisite art work from the 17 th century, most notably from Luis Riaño which represents the path to glory and the path to hell.

Raqchi (3,450 m.a.s.l / 11,318 f.a.s.l)

117 km / 73 miles from Cusco the bus stops for a 45 minute tour of the archaeological site of Raqchi. The remarkable Wiracocha temple, 100 meters (328 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) wide is made of adobe walls built on top of volcanic stone foundations. The complex also includes a residential area made for the Inca nobles and dozens of circular warehouses to store food. Built in the fifteenth century, it is considered by the historians to be one of the most audacious Inca constructions.

Sicuani (3,554 m.a.s.l / 11,660 f.a.s.l)

Sicuani is the stopping point for lunch. A specially prepared buffet lunch is available, offering food typical to the Cusco region plus some of international dishes. You can expect a selection of hearty soups, several main dishes including chicken, fish and meat plus vegetarian options. Deserts and hot drinks are also included.

La Raya (4,335 m.a.s.l / 14,222 f.a.s.l)

La Raya is the highest point on the trip, and is roughly located half way between Cusco and Puno. A 10 minute photo stop is included to allow you time to capture the striking scenery and also stretch your legs. La Raya marks the point where the landscapes change from rolling hills to the flat altiplano.

Pucara Museum (3,900 m.a.s.l / 12,795 f.a.s.l)

107 km / 66 miles from Puno the Pukara is famous for its pottery, especially the “Toritos de Pucara,” the ceramic bulls that are traditionally placed on the roofs of Andean houses.  The Pucara Museum houses a collection of lithic sculptures and ceramics found in the area from the Pucara pre-Inca Culture. The stop is usually around 45 minutes. There are also toilets here.

Puno / Lake Titicaca (3,800 m.a.s.l / 12,476 f.a.s.l)

Either the start or end point of the trip. Buses typically departing around 7.15 am or arrive around 5pm. Puno is the gateway to Lake Titicaca , the mythical birth place of the Inca civilization.

Our Thoughts

Wonder Peru Expeditions are our first choice for all of our clients that travel from Cusco to Puno or vice versa. Their buses are the most modern and comfortable of all the operators on this route, and they seem to offer a good service which so far has never had a complaint. To book you need to send a contact form through their website or email them directly. Payment methods are limited.

Inka Express Bus

Inka Express have been operating the Cusco – Puno route since 1999. Their 40 seater luxury coaches offer an oxygen enriched environment, have unlimited wifi (no streaming), power outlets for laptops etc., coffee/tea facilities and an on-board bathroom.

USA Phone: 305 906 5395 Peru Phone: +51 (0)84 247 887 Website: http://inkaexpress.com/ (website having problems with malware so not linked!).

Cusco: Avenida 28 de Julio (5to paradero Urbanizacion Ttio) Puno: Terminal Terrestre Puno (general bus terminal). Times: Departs at 07.15 am / Arrives at 5.00 pm.

We once used to use Inka Express for all of our Peru package tours , but nowadays we prefer Wonder Bus. Generally clients were happy with the services they provided, but we did receive some complaints, which were mainly directed at the quality of the on-board guides. Their website, although recently updated is hard to navigate, and actually difficult to find the button that allows you to buy the tickets. Their website is poorly written and in places really quite rubbish. Payment is by PayPal only.

About Cusco

Cusco or Cuzco (both graphical symbols are acceptable according to the RAE, Real Academy of the Spanish language) is the main destination that you can get to know on your trips through Peru. Learn more about it in this section. The legend tells that Cusco was founded by 2 ancestral patriarchs, who, due to the design of the deity Sun, emerged from the Titicaca lake with the mission of putting in order the Andean men’s life. They would be the beginning of the vast Incan Empire, which as time goes by would reach its maximum glory consolidating as a powerful State. In 1911 the American explorer Hiram Bingham would refind the incan citadel to the world’s eyes with the discovery of Machu Picchu. From that day the growth of Cusco has been exponential, turning to be one of the most visited worldwide tourist destinations and favourite place for national and foreign tourists to “discover” the beauty of the Machu Picchu citadel on its travel to Cusco.

On the pre-Hispanic period, Puno was the settlement place of different human groups, who will finish being part of the first settlement of the Pucará culture. During this period, there were built big constructions of pyramidal shape. This kind of monumental architecture was peculiar of the Pucará and Tiahuanaco cultures, which also shared the territory. With the disappearance of the Tiahuanaco, during the 12th and 13th centuries, different kingdoms were born: Kollas, Lupacas and Pacajes. When the colonial period started, on the 15th century, Puno started its transformation into a inhabited center of commercial exchange, that little by little would be enriched with the multiculturalism of its visitors. This growth continued until half the 18th century, because Puno had taken relevance for being a mining settlement and a crossing territory between the most important cities of the region. In 1776 Puno ended being part of the viceroyalty of Peru, starting to being part of the viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, although it integrated again to Peru in 1796.On the Republic period, on the 19th century, the population of Puno was over the 6000 residents and the commercial development turned around different activities, as the agriculture and the textile, between other new industries. The University San Carlos de Puno was also founded, what motivated a bigger development of the culture, what favoured the new urban configuration that the city was taking.Nowadays Puno is a relevant city for the economic growth of the country, besides being considered the cultural capital of Peru. The tourism has grown quite a lot the last years, motivating the construction of an adequate infrastructure to receive the new visitors that each year come to 300.000 people.

You can book a bus of your choice to any destination in Peru by logging on to the official website of redBus which is redbus.pe/en/ . The site is user-friendly and you can book your bus ticket in a matter of minutes.

You can either visit the terminal and go the booth belonging to the bus operator of your choice, wait in line, select a seat, and book your ticket. If you’d rather not do that, you can visit redbus.pe/en/ and book your seat within 5 minutes.

There are two main scenarios that you might fall into when you have to board a bus. Now, if your boarding point is at any terminal in redbus.pe/en/ , passengers will have to take a print out of the bus ticket that has been sent to the email in a PDF format. The second scenario is when your boarding point is a bus stop and not a terminal. In this case, you will receive an M-ticket that you will have to produce before boarding your bus. If the operator does not provide an M-Ticket, you will have to take a printout of the ticket (PDF) that has been sent to the registered email ID that you have used to book the bus ticket on the redBus website. Some operators might levy a charge if these conditions are not followed.

Transportes Libertad Cusco Puno recent customer reviews

It was very bad. I arrived before the departure time to collect the ticket and they just advised me that there is no bus anymore. I did not get any email before to let me know. They put me with another company but the bus was bad (no AC). After 5h, the bus stopped working and the driver did not advise us. We were in the middle of nowhere and they were trying to fix the bus. After an hour another bus stop and I had to pay for another ticket to finally arrive at destination much later than expected.

I loved the comfortable and wide seats, but there was no air ventilation and it had a 30 min delay because it left Cusco 30 min layer than planned

The bus didn’t turn up to the dropped pin given on the app. I had to get the overnight bus and extend my stay in Cusco.

Transzela

The bus was found to be very comfortable with cautious drivers and a great lunch stop. However, some passengers reported issues such as loud staff members on the phone and uncomfortable heat when the heater was turned up too high, affecting sleep quality. Additionally, there were complaints about toilet smells in the bus.

Transzela Cusco Puno recent customer reviews

The bus needed new springs and shocks in the back. The lights above the seats didn’t work and the air was intermittent. But the seats were comfortable. The driver was good and the attendant was very attentive.

A man from Staff sit on rear next to me and started speaking loudly by phone. I dont get it. Luck of principales of culture.

Everything was fine until the heater was turned on at maximum heat. Everyone was sleeping perfectly before that and we all woke up and struggled to get back to sleep because it was 30 degrees inside the cabin. Please, never turn on the heater or tune it down, I had to block the vent with my vest to manage to get some sleep again. All companies do that, I do t understand it, it literally kills the trip every time.

Cruz del Sur

The bus service received excellent reviews for its comfortable and well-maintained buses, professional drivers, and punctuality. However, there were concerns about the lack of assistance when passengers needed help with seating arrangements or other issues during the journey.

Cruz del Sur Cusco Puno recent customer reviews

Excellent! Bus in perfect conditions, super comfy, very responsible and professional driver, I wish all bus journeys were like this one! Well done!

The bus was freezing cold during the night and we arrived to Puno with almost 2 hours delay

Punctuality was good. We were burning with the heather in front of the bus. Fortunately, the bus had empty chairs on the back and we were able to switch. Nobody was around to help us.
