How to Disable Web Page Auto-Refresh In Your Browser

There was a time when web pages were static once they loaded – no post-processing changing web pages before your eyes, no funny business. Today, features like auto-refresh are designed to help us, but sometimes they can get in the way, causing videos or text to reload when we’re in the middle of using them. To make your life a little easier, we show you how to disable auto-refresh on all major browsers.

Stop Auto-Refresh Using Browser Settings

Google chrome, mozilla firefox, microsoft edge, apple safari, internet explorer, stop auto refresh via extensions, frequently asked questions.

Let’s start with Google Chrome, the most popular browser. Disabling auto-refresh was once something that could be quickly done via third-party extensions. Unfortunately, recent changes to Chrome have all but eliminated the need for those extensions, so they no longer exist in the Chrome Web Store.

The good news is that there is a built-in alternative method that isn’t perfect but does the job. To get started, type chrome://discards into the address bar. This site shows a list of all your currently active tabs, with an option to stop auto-refresh.

Begin by looking for “Auto Discardable” near the right side of the page, then locate the site where you want to disable auto-refresh. When you locate the page, click on “Toggle,” and the “√” will change to an “x.”

When “Auto Discardable” is active, any site that is disabled will not refresh automatically. The caveat is that these settings are not permanent. Any time you close Chrome, you will have to follow the same process and toggle off any site. If you do not close Chrome, the setting will remain enabled for as long as it is running.

Remember, this setting is different from Chrome’s Memory Saver in the latest version of the browser. The option lets you pause the updating of tabs in the background, saving precious resources on your computer. However, as soon as you click on the tab again, it automatically updates the content.

It’s also worth noting that the same steps apply to Brave and Opera. Just use brave://discards or opera://discards , and follow the same options for the “Auto Discardable” toggle.

The process for blocking auto-refresh is much simpler in Mozilla’s browser.

Just type about:config into the Firefox address bar, “Accept the risks” involved in making changes to Firefox, then near the top of the list, you should see the accessibility.blockautorefresh preference.

At the far right of this preference, click on what looks like a dual arrow “icon” to change its value from “false” to “true,” thereby disabling auto-refresh in Firefox. To turn auto-refresh back on, follow the same process, and go from “true” to “false.”

Similar to other Chromium-based browsers, such as Google Chrome, you can stop tabs from refreshing by using the “discard” option. Open your Edge browser, and type edge://discards/ into the search bar. This opens a new window that displays all the open tabs. In the “Auto Discardable” column, click on the toggle for the tab that you don’t want to auto-refresh.

Remember that the change isn’t permanent and that you’ll have to do that every time you open Edge.

Nope, no such luck. Apple’s Safari browser doesn’t have a built-in function that allows you to block auto-refresh, nor is there a third-party extension that does it yet. While an extension for this could technically exist, Apple has not been very proactive about attracting developers to make extensions for the Safari browser (though Apple is stepping up ), so there really aren’t that many extensions available, let alone one that does this specific task.

First, we’re going to scold you for still using Internet Explorer when the browser is no longer being supported and updated by Microsoft. But the fact remains that a lot of people still persist and use IE, so these directions will show how to disable auto-refresh in the deprecated browser.

Click the Start button, type “internet options,” and select Internet Options in the search results. In the Internet Properties window, click “Custom tab -> Custom level,” then in the Security Settings window, scroll down until you find “Allow META REFRESH.” Disable this option, and click “OK.”

If you are comfortable tinkering around with browser settings or performance tweaks, there are a few browser extensions you can install to prevent tabs from automatically refreshing.

One of the best extensions for Google Chrome (which also works for the Opera browser) is Easy Auto Refresh . It’s primarily used to force a reload on a tab, but it can also function in a way to prevent it. Through a simple menu, set how many minutes it should wait before refreshing a tab. Whether you set it for 999 minutes or 0 minutes, it will have the same effect.

An excellent option for Firefox users is ReloadMatic: Automatic Tab Refresh , downloaded from the Firefox Add-ons page. Schedule when tabs should reload, but through the Smart Timing feature, prevent reloads entirely.

If Edge is your preferred browser, you can also use an extension to block tab reloads. By downloading Auto Refresh Plus from the Edge Add-On store, manage when your tabs reload the data, or use the Auto Stop feature that prevents refreshing if you click anywhere on the page.

Why do my apps auto refresh on mobile?

Developers code this function into apps so that users have the most up-to-date information when they open an app. This is called background app refresh, and you can turn it off on iOS and Android. You’ll need to manually refresh the app (usually by pulling it down from the top) to see the latest content. Remember, this is different from browser tabs refreshing.

How do I stop Chrome from suspending tabs automatically?

Chrome has a built-in setting that lets you suspend tabs in the background. This function is excellent if your computer doesn’t have a lot of RAM to share between tabs. But if you want to turn it off, type chrome://settings in the address bar, go to “Settings,” and click on Performance. From there, toggle the “Memory saver” option.

Can a faulty F5 key cause pages to refresh automatically?

It is certainly possible that a stuck F5 key can accidentally refresh a webpage. However, it will only refresh your current tab and not any others. If you are using a USB or wireless keyboard, disconnect the gadget to see if it continues.

How to disable page auto-refresh on Safari Mac

There’s a reason why Safari is so popular among Mac users. It performs at a good speed even when the resources are low. Such an optimized browser has a fair reason to be the number one choice of many users. However, it comes with its own set of limitations. For example, when you have several tabs open, the old tabs get killed. As a result, when you revisit the old opened tabs, they start to reload.

This happens because when Safari runs out of RAM, it kills off the old tabs to make space for new pages. If you’re working on RAM intensive processes, you’ll notice this auto-reload problem more frequently. While this is a good way to allocate RAM to the more recent pages, it can be annoying when you have to go back to previously opened tabs.

The problem becomes even worse when you’re watching a movie. With the movie tab reloading again and again, you can’t have a good time for sure.

So while it’s a good feature, it can sometimes become a nuisance. How to disable page auto refresh issue on Safari Mac? Let’s see.

Let’s get started with knowing that this problem isn’t just limited to Safari. This problem (or feature) is present in most browsers such as Chrome. So some solutions mentioned here can work on the same issue with other browsers as well.

1. Restart the browser

Pretty simple – browser acting weird? Close it and turn it on again. Restarting the browser will free up the resources and give you more memory to work with. It will also help you close the tabs you no longer require.

This step is also important because some websites (especially the ones running videos or JavaScript) can freeze over time. And they can start auto-reloading again. When you close the browser, the problematic websites are closed and you get a fresh start.

2. Clear the cache

If you haven’t cleared up the browser cache for long, this might be the issue. Make sure you clear out the cookies and the cache of your browser. To clear the cache, follow these steps:

1. Open Safari

2. Go to Safari menu and select Preferences

3. Click on the Advanced tab

4. Check the box next to “Show Develop menu in menu bar.” Now you’ll be able to see Develop menu on the menu bar.

5. Click on Develop menu.

6. Select the option Empty Caches.

7. You can also clear history by going to the History menu and selecting “Clear History.”

You can also clear the cache from outside the browser. Just visit the location: Users/~/Library/Cache/com.apple.Safari

You’ll see a number of folders here. However, make sure you don’t delete all the folders given at this location. You can empty a folder by deleting its files. You can keep the folder.

3. Disable JavaScript

If it’s a specific website that creates problems because it’s got JavaScript running in the background, you can simply disable JavaScript on Safari. Here’s how to do that:

1. Visit Develop menu that you enabled in step 2.

2. Select Disable JavaScript

That’s it. With just two steps, you can disable websites from running JavaScript and thus cause the auto reload issue on Safari.

4. Use a Safari extension

While we don’t recommend using extensions, it can be an easy way out for people who don’t want to play around too much with the browser settings. Extensions such as Simple Refresh will refresh the tabs automatically even when they’re in the background. They allow you to set a time duration for refreshing. You can even set different duration for each tab.

5. Turn off content blocking

Content blocking is a great way to block ads. When it’s turned on, it disallows websites to download content to your device. While they are amazing in many ways, there are websites that start reloading when content blocking is turned on. So to limit the issue of page auto refresh on Safari, you need to turn off your content blockers. Here’s how you can do that.

2. Go to the website for which you want to disable the content blocker.

3. Open the Safari menu and click on “Settings for this website.”

4. Uncheck the box for the option “Enable content blockers.”

This will disable content blockers for that website and thus it will not auto reload. However, it will allow the website to download content on your device. This could include malicious programs as well.

6. Use only one tab

A primitive method, yes. But it’s the ultimate solution. If old tabs are auto refreshing, don’t keep any old tabs. Use only one tab at a time. If you have the habit of opening 30 tabs on one screen, this might be a problem. Switch to a single tab (or maybe just a couple of tabs at a time) and your issue might be resolved.

This is all fine, but what if the page doesn’t get auto refreshed, but instead, you see the error, “This webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred”?

In that case, you can try updating Safari. This error can sometimes arise because you’re running an older version of the browser. To do this, go to System Preferences. From here, go to Software Update. Also, make sure you update your operating system as well. Updating software doesn’t just solve most issues but it also keeps you secure from security related incidents.

7. Use another browser

If you’re using just one browser, that might be a major issue. Most users rely on different browsers for different purposes. Since most of the popular browsers keep a record of the history and cache of users, they can’t be used for secure transactions. If you want to carry out financial transactions or want to use the browser for something but don’t want anyone to snoop around on your activities, you can use a more private browser such as Kingpin .

Kingpin is a browser that works on incognito mode as default. It doesn’t store any history and all cookies are deleted as soon as the session is closed. It also has inbuilt ad blocking properties and doesn’t have the page auto refresh issue faced by Safari.

Summing it up

There are a number of approaches you can take if your tabs are getting auto refreshed every now and then. If simple browser restarting doesn’t solve the problem, you might have to play around with the settings a bit. But once the page finishes loading, all the information displayed usually remains static, even if it has changed or refreshed in the backend. To access the latest information, you can refresh all those web pages in Safari.

Refreshing webpages help update the current information on your screen. And while you can use the Cmd + Option + R shortcut to hard refresh (force reload) or clear all the cache in Safari separately, what if you want to reload the page? Is there an option or shortcut? Let’s find out.

How to Refresh Webpages in Safari on iPhone and iPad

When using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, use the Reload icon to reload a page. Or, if your device is updated, use the pull-to-refresh option. You can also use keyboard shortcuts, if available. Or, force the browser to close and restart. Thus, reloading the page in the process. Here’s a step-by-step look for clarity.

1. Using the Address Bar

Step 1: Depending on your device’s settings, go to the address bar at the top or bottom of the page in Safari.

Step 2: Here, tap on the Reload icon.

Wait for the page to finish reloading. If the address bar is not visible, use your finger to move the page up or down. Once you see it, tap on the Reload icon accordingly. This will reload the page in Safari.

2. Through the Pull-to-Refresh Feature

If your iPhone runs iOS 15 or higher, you can use the pull-to-refresh option. Using this, you can pull the webpage down and wait for it to refresh and reload.

Step 1: Go to the relevant tab in Safari.

Step 2: Now, hold and pull down from the top half of the page. Release the page once you see the reload icon appear.

Once you release the page, it should automatically refresh all the information. If this doesn’t work, check your device’s software version and try again.

3. Using a Keyboard Shortcut

As long as you have a compatible wireless keyboard , you can connect it to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth . This can not only aid in typing but also allow you to use keyboard shortcuts on your Apple device. Then, use the Cmd + R shortcut on the wireless keyboard and reload the page without touching the screen.

4. Force Close and Restart Safari

If you can’t use the abovementioned methods, force Safari to close altogether on your iPhone or iPad. This can help solve any glitches with the browser as well. Once the browser reopens, it should refresh the page as well. Here’s how.

Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of the page to open background apps. Or, if your device has a Home button, double-press it.

Step 2: Once the background apps are visible, hold and swipe up on Safari.

Step 3: Now, tap on the Safari app icon to reopen the browser.

Once Safari opens, the page should also reopen in the designated tab. If that doesn’t happen, use the address bar or search history to reopen the page in Safari.

How to Refresh Safari Webpages on Your Mac

Like refreshing Safari webpages on your iPhone or iPad, you can also reload a page on your Mac. To do this, use the refresh button in Safari, menu options, or the keyboard shortcut. Or, if this doesn’t work, force Safari to close and reload. This will not only restart all browser functions but also reload the page. Here’s how to do it.

1. Through the Reload Icon

Step 1: Go to the Safari address bar and click on the Reload icon.

Once the page reloads, any related issue should be resolved as your browser fetches a fresh copy of the page.

2. Using Menu Options

Step 1: Once Safari is open, go to the menu bar and click on View.

Step 2: Here, click on Reload Page. Wait for the page to refresh.

3. Using Keyboard Shortcut

While you must connect a keyboard to your iPad or iPhone, your Mac already has one. Taking advantage of this, use the Cmd + R keys to reload the currently open page in Safari quickly. Or, if you want to reload the page without cache, hold down the Shift key on the keyboard and click the Reload icon in Safari.

4. Closing and Reopening Safari

Step 1: Go to the menu options and click on the Apple icon. Then, click on Force Quit.

Step 2: From the list of apps, select Safari.

Step 3: Then, click on Force Quit. Wait for Safari to close.

Step 4: Now, click on the Safari app icon to open the browser again.

If the webpage isn’t open, type the website address in the menu bar or open it from the device history. The web page information should be refreshed.

How can I force Safari to perform a full page reload, without using the mouse?

I'm using Safari to preview web pages as I develop them on my local server. I've got 'Disable Caches' checked in the Develop menu. And yet Safari is still working from a cached version of a stylesheet that's linked from the HTML file being displayed.

I can sometimes override this by Option-clicking the reload button in the location bar, but I want to refresh the page automatically when I save the CSS file. At the moment I'm doing it using an AppleScript that's bound to the Save action in my text editor. I could see using Keyboard Maestro instead. But I need some consistent way to force Safari to do a full reload from the keyboard.

Enable the Develop menu from Safari menu - Preferences - Advanced .

On Safari version 11.1 and above :

CMD + OPTION + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

On Safari version 9 and above :

CMD + SHIFT + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

Emptying caches seems not to reload the stylesheets everytimes…

On Safari below version 9 :

Empty cache and then reload so full "hot key" would be :

CMD + OPTION + E

CMD + R to refresh the page

Of course probably turning opening and closing a New Private Window from the File would also work but…

There is an option in the menubar Develop->Disable Caches. This is true for Safari 5.1. I'm not sure for the rest.

Turn on Private mode and refresh the page. It won't get it from the cache in private mode.

Hard refresh was removed as a keyboard shortcut in Safari 5. The old command for that was ⌘ + SHIFT + R

CTRL + F5 May work but I can't test here.

Workaround: in the develop menu, select "start debugging javascript" and it must reload the code properly. You can then stop debugging... I know it's not a clean solution and I'm not sure if it works always or in all versions, but it's working for me now.

I stumble upon this question and apparently the current answers do not work.

Issue is currently CMD + ALT + R opens the Responsive design.

However if the inspector is open via CMD + ALT + I , then the same shortcut does a clean refresh.

Current Safari Version: 12.1.2

CMD + L focus on the address bar SHIFT + ALT + ENTER full reload for the current address

It seems to work on Safari 9

Stop Auto Refresh in Safari

How can I stop a website from auto-refreshing? This started recently with my Facebook feed for some reason.

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company. 

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
