Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as The Doctor and Ruby Sunday, respectively, in 'Doctor Who'

[This story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Doctor Who ‘s new season, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”]

BBC’s science-fiction powerhouse Doctor Who has launched its new season starring Ncuti Gatwa ( Barbie, Sex Education ) across the world on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere.

Davies then left his showrunning duties in 2009, handing the franchise over to Sherlock’ s Steven Moffat. But he returned for four specials celebrating Doctor Who ’s 60th anniversary in 2023. And with it, he brought Gatwa to the role of the Time Lord.

The Hollywood Reporter published the first part to this interview ahead of Doctor Who ‘s Disney+ launch. Now, Davies digs into spoilers from the first two episodes, and talks about bringing the Doctor’s sense of humor to a U.S. audience: “There are no ‘Disney notes,'” he says. “They’re just as much up for this adventure the rest of us are.”

When you brought Doctor Who back to television in 2005, you had burping bins and farting aliens. And now, almost 20 years later in “Space Babies,” you have villain The Bogeyman (a monster made of boogers) and a farting space station.

It’s a release of methane, I think you’ll find! (laughs) I love that. I think it’s absolutely brilliant. The fact that 19 years later you can refer to something that happened in any other drama 19 years ago! Go on, you can’t! (laughs) I know what’s memorable, I know what works. I know what stays in the memory, and that’s absolutely one of them. And I love that stuff.

But my favorite thing about it is how much the Doctor laughs. We’re now many years into the Doctor Who revival and we’re presenting this as a new show. So in episode one, to have the Doctor laughing that much, that’s the glorious thing about it. He thinks it’s so funny. I have never seen the Doctor laugh at a reveal that much. Can you? Have you ever, ever, ever seen that happen in Doctor Who ? Never!

There’s a moment where the Doctor uses his Sonic Screwdriver to enable Ruby’s ( the Doctor’s companion, played by Millie Gibson ) phone to call her mum, even though they are thousands of years apart. That’s a lovely callback to your 2005 episode “The End of the World,” where the Ninth Doctor (Eccleston ) did the very same thing for his companion Rose .

Yes, it is. It’s what he’d do. I remember sitting writing that thinking, “Oh gosh, I did that. I’ve done that before.” And then I thought, “Well, I did it 19 years ago and this is a brand new audience. But it’s very important that she doesn’t feel separated and abandoned from her family.” So there’s no way he couldn’t do it again, because it’s a good scene. It’s what he’d do, it needs reminding.

This time, when Ruby gets her phone zapped, she says, “How much did that cost?” Rose wouldn’t have thought of that. There’s something a lot more savvy about it. Ruby’s very aware of that 50 quid she got for a gig last night. And that’s her first question, “What does that cost?” I like that.

I’m just not going to answer the question! (laughs) How can that be? And you know, I put things like that in knowing that people will discuss that for the next 60 years. It’s a glorious opening isn’t it? I love that.

I was slightly disappointed the Doctor didn’t do a “decomposing” gag after the Maestro (new villain played by Jinkx Monsoon) meets their end.

Yes, I thought about it at the end. But I thought that would really sound like Maestro is dead, and if ever there’s a character ripe for return — it’s Maestro!

I love the quote, “lovesick songs for heartbroken lesbians” in “The Devil’s Chord.” I thought that was an amazing title for an album.

Yes, who would have that? Blur could have that. No, that would be… what are they called? Last Dinner Party!

Oh yes, they had a hit with “Nothing Matters” last year.

That’s gorgeous. I love that. That’s for them. They would sing, “Lovesick Songs for Heartbroken Lesbians.”

Later in that episode, there’s a great gag for film students: “I thought that was non-diegetic…”

Oh, thank you. Thank you for getting that joke because, there are plenty of people on the production team I had to explain that too. (laughs) And then you get people who don’t understand the joke and they go, “Can we cut it?”

He’s playing himself I noticed.

He existed in 1963. He is immortal and eternal, and will always be with us. (laughs)

Sticking with cameos, you also have Shirley Ballas and Johannes Radebe. [Judge and dancer, respectively, from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing (the U.K. equivalent of Dancing With The Stars )].

Shirley and Johannes! How could we resist? I was on set that day. I made sure of that. Johannes and I were born on the same day, different years, obviously. Yeah, both of us, twins!

The Fifteenth Doctor (Gatwa) speaks Turkish. Is that his equivalent of Tenth Doctor catchphrase Allons-y!

Haydi ama! That’s right, it’s the equivalent. I thought we should go a little bit more worldwide with our Allons-ys. Deliberate.

So, was using Turkey intentional or just a pin in the map?

I remember Googling quite a few languages to find something that sounded good. I simply wanted to sound good. “Haydi ama” sounds wonderful. I love it. I can’t remember the other languages I looked at, but I liked that one. I wanted it to be more of not the traditional Western European stuff.

How did Disney react to the moment in “Space Babies” where a baby brandishes a flamethrower?

Doctor Who episodes “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord” are available to stream on Disney+ (excluding U.K. and Ireland). New episodes debut weekly on Saturday .

Bill Of The Month

He fell ill on a cruise. before he boarded the rescue boat, they handed him the bill.

On the last full day of a Bahamas excursion, Vincent Wasney had three epileptic seizures. While being evacuated, he received a bill for expenses incurred during the cruise. Kristen Norman for KFF Health News hide caption

On the last full day of a Bahamas excursion, Vincent Wasney had three epileptic seizures. While being evacuated, he received a bill for expenses incurred during the cruise.

Vincent Wasney and his fiancée, Sarah Eberlein, had never visited the ocean. They'd never even been on a plane. But when they bought their first home in Saginaw, Michigan, in 2018, their real estate agent gifted them tickets for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

After two years of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, they set sail in December 2022.

The couple chose a cruise destined for the Bahamas in part because it included a trip to CocoCay, a private island accessible to Royal Caribbean passengers that featured a water park, balloon rides, and an excursion swimming with pigs.

Bill of the Month is a crowdsourced investigation by KFF Health News and NPR that dissects and explains medical bills. Do you have an interesting medical bill you want to share with us? Tell us about it !

It was on that day on CocoCay when Wasney, 31, started feeling off, he said.

The next morning, as the couple made plans in their cabin for the last full day of the trip, Wasney made a pained noise. Eberlein saw him having a seizure in bed, with blood coming out of his mouth from biting his tongue. She opened their door to find help and happened upon another guest, who roused his wife, an emergency room physician.

Wasney was able to climb into a wheelchair brought by the ship's medical crew to take him down to the medical facility, where he was given anticonvulsants and fluids and monitored before being released.

Vincent had had seizures in the past, starting about ten years ago, but it had been a while since his last one. Imaging back then showed no tumors, and doctors concluded he was likely epileptic, he said. He took medicine initially, but after two years without another seizure, he said his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

Wasney had a second seizure on the ship a few hours later, back in his cabin. This time he stopped breathing, and Eberlein remembered his lips being so purple, they almost looked black. Again, she ran to find help but, in her haste, locked herself out. By the time the ship's medical team got into the cabin, Wasney was breathing again but had broken blood vessels along his chest and neck that he later said resembled tiger stripes.

Wasney was in the ship's medical center when he had a third seizure — a grand mal, which typically causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. By then, the ship was close enough to port that Wasney could be evacuated by rescue boat. He was put on a stretcher to be lowered by ropes off the side of the ship, with Eberlein climbing down a rope ladder to join him.

But before they disembarked, the bill came.

The patient: Vincent Wasney, 31, who was uninsured at the time.

Medical services: General and enhanced observation, a blood test, anticonvulsant medicine, and a fee for services performed outside the medical facility.

Service provider: Independence of the Seas Medical Center, the on-ship medical facility on the cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International .

Total bill: $2,500.22.

A mom's $97,000 question: How was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary?

Shots - Health News

A mom's $97,000 question: how was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary.

What gives: As part of Royal Caribbean's guest terms , cruise passengers "agree to pay in full" all expenses incurred on board by the end of the cruise, including those related to medical care. In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Wasney said he was surprised to learn that, along with other charges like wireless internet, Royal Caribbean required he pay his medical bills before exiting the ship — even though he was being evacuated urgently.

"Are we being held hostage at this point?" Eberlein remembered asking. "Because, obviously, if he's had three seizures in 10 hours, it's an issue."

Wasney said he has little memory of being on the ship after his first seizure — seizures often leave victims groggy and disoriented for a few hours afterward.

But he certainly remembers being shown a bill, the bulk of which was the $2,500.22 in medical charges, while waiting for the rescue boat.

Still groggy, Wasney recalled saying he couldn't afford that and a cruise employee responding: "How much can you pay?"

They drained their bank accounts, including money saved for their next house payment, and maxed out Wasney's credit card but were still about $1,000 short, he said.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave the ship. He later learned his card was overdrafted to cover the shortfall, he said.

Royal Caribbean International did not respond to multiple inquiries from KFF Health News.

Once on land, in Florida, Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

He still isn't entirely sure what caused the seizures.

On the ship he was told it could have been extreme dehydration — and he said he does remember being extra thirsty on CocoCay. He also has mused whether trying escargot for the first time the night before could have played a role. Eberlein's mother is convinced the episode was connected to swimming with pigs, he said. And not to be discounted, Eberlein accidentally broke a pocket mirror three days before their trip.

Wasney, who works in a stone shop, was uninsured when they set sail. He said that one month before they embarked on their voyage, he finally felt he could afford the health plan offered through his employer and signed up, but the plan didn't start until January 2023, after their return.

They also lacked travel insurance. As inexperienced travelers, Wasney said, they thought it was for lost luggage and canceled trips, not unexpected medical expenses. And because the cruise was a gift, they were never prompted to buy coverage, which often happens when tickets are purchased.

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

The resolution: Wasney said the couple returned to Saginaw with essentially no money in their bank account, several thousand dollars of medical debt, and no idea how they would cover their mortgage payment. Because he was uninsured at the time of the cruise, Wasney did not try to collect reimbursement for the cruise bill from his new health plan when his coverage began weeks later.

The couple set up payment plans to cover the medical bills for Wasney's care after leaving the ship: one each with two doctors he saw at Broward Health, who billed separately from the hospital, and one with the ambulance company. He also made payments on a bill with Broward Health itself. Those plans do not charge interest.

But Broward Health said Wasney missed two payments to the hospital, and that bill was ultimately sent to collections.

In a statement, Broward Health spokesperson Nina Levine said Wasney's bill was reduced by 73% because he was uninsured.

"We do everything in our power to provide the best care with the least financial impact, but also cannot stress enough the importance of taking advantage of private and Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, as well as travel insurance, to lower risks associated with unplanned medical issues," she said.

The couple was able to make their house payment with $2,690 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign that Wasney set up. Wasney said a lot of that help came from family as well as friends he met playing disc golf, a sport he picked up during the pandemic.

"A bunch of people came through for us," Wasney said, still moved to tears by the generosity. "But there's still the hospital bill."

The takeaway: Billing practices differ by cruise line, but Joe Scott , chair of the cruise ship medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said medical charges are typically added to a cruise passenger's onboard account, which must be paid before leaving the ship. Individuals can then submit receipts to their insurers for possible reimbursement.

He recommended that those planning to take a cruise purchase travel insurance that specifically covers their trips. "This will facilitate reimbursement if they do incur charges and potentially cover a costly medical evacuation if needed," Scott said.

Royal Caribbean suggests that passengers who receive onboard care submit their paid bills to their health insurer for possible reimbursement. Many health plans do not cover medical services received on cruise ships, however. Medicare will sometimes cover medically necessary health care services on cruise ships, but not if the ship is more than six hours away from a U.S. port.

Travel insurance can be designed to address lots of out-of-town mishaps, like lost baggage or even transportation and lodging for a loved one to visit if a traveler is hospitalized.

Travel medical insurance, as well as plans that offer "emergency evacuation and repatriation," are two types that can specifically assist with medical emergencies. Such plans can be purchased individually. Credit cards may offer travel medical insurance among their benefits, as well.

But travel insurance plans come with limitations. For instance, they may not cover care associated with preexisting conditions or what the plans consider "risky" activities, such as rock climbing. Some plans also require that travelers file first with their primary health insurance before seeking reimbursement from travel insurance.

As with other insurance, be sure to read the fine print and understand how reimbursement works.

Wasney said that's what they plan to do before their next Royal Caribbean cruise. They'd like to go back to the Bahamas on basically the same trip, he said — there's a lot about CocoCay they didn't get to explore.

LaGrange woman heading back to US after getting sick on cruise, stuck in DR hospital

LAGRANGE, Ga. (WTVM) - A LaGrange woman stuck in a Dominican Republic hospital on life support is making her way back to the United States after thousands of dollars spent for her transport and care.

54-year-old Loretta Cox went on a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas with her husband Sunday, two days later she suddenly got sick from fluid in her lungs.

“We just want her to be okay.” Aldes Brooks, daughter of Loretta Cox

Cox’s daughter, Aldes Brooks, says trying to get her mother back on American soil hasn’t only been a nightmare. She says it actually feels like her family’s been stuck in the Twilight Zone.

“She has been talking about this for weeks, ordering bathing suits - she was just happy to be able go somewhere with her husband,” Brooks shared.

Brooks, also of LaGrange, says her mom had been planning for her seven-day cruise for some time now. On day three, the cruise took a turn for the worse.

“She was fine and on Tuesday she fell ill on the boat. She wasn’t able to breathe they had to put her on a ventilator on the boat, they ported in the Dominican Republic and here we are,” Brooks added.

Brooks says her mother boarded the boat in good health on Sunday, but now she’s in a medically induced coma with fluid in her lungs.

The daughter tells us Cox’s ship docked Wednesday morning and dropped her off at a hospital in the Dominican Republic.

“It has just been crazy and it’s all because she’s a U.S. citizen who has U.S. insurance but they don’t take that overseas,” said Brooks.

From paying for medical transport, care and stay, Cox’s family has spent thousands of dollars in a short span of time.

“It’s been close to $50,000 because, in order for her to stay in the hospital, it was an additional $4,000. Her husband couldn’t stay with her at the hospital so we had to get him a hotel. It’s been invoice after invoice,” said Brooks.

The family was finally able to find an airline that could fly Cox at the safe altitude for her low oxygen levels.

“We had to go through a lot of channels to try and get her home, flying low so that we won’t lose her on the flight,” said Brooks.

Cox’s daughter said her mother had no major health issues before going on the cruise, so they’re not sure what caused her to become ill.

We’re told her flight is scheduled to land in Miami around 2:30 Friday morning.

The family has created a GoFundMe page for donations. If you’d like to help, click here .

LaGrange woman heading back to US after getting sick on cruise, stuck in DR hospital

L AGRANGE, Ga.

Dr. Kellee Shey

dr who cruise

Dr. Kellee Shey, 64, of Webster City passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Kellee Ann was the oldest of seven to Dr. George Cruise and Mary Carol (Haegelin) Shey. She was born March 10, 1960, in Iowa City and graduated from Webster City High School in 1978. While there she was a member of student council, cheerleading, and several service organizations. Kellee received her undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, graduating from the Iowa College of Dentistry in 1985. Kellee married Daniel Russell Trepp in 1986. The couple made their home in Webster City where Kellee owned and operated her own dental practice, Gentle Family Dentistry.

Dr. Kellee’s gentle approach to dentistry transformed the dental experience for her patients. Her ability to connect on a personal level, always remembering to ask about important and cherished details of their lives, made appointments something to look forward to rather than dread. She attended her patients’ graduations, funerals, weddings, and showers, showing up for them in ways beyond her professional role. Many cards and phone calls confirmed that Kellee was more than just a dentist; she was a friend.

She created lasting memories and traditions with her family. On the night of the first snowfall each year, she would take her girls on snow walks, the quiet interrupted only by the sound of crunching snow. She shared her love of piano music by attending Lorie Line concerts, creating special mother-daughter memories. Her creativity and love shone brightly during the holidays, as she meticulously crafted handmade stockings for her children and grandchildren, each one a unique symbol of her affection.

Traveling was another way she bonded with her friends and family, exploring new places and cultures together, visiting four of the seven wonders of the world. Starting in grade school, camping throughout the U.S. and Canada, was the beginning. While in high school, a trip to France, followed by a visit to Russia, cemented her love of travel. Western Europe was a frequent destination and annual trips were discussed, researched, and organized throughout the year. A new travel adventure was always on the horizon.

Kellee did not have a mean bone in her body and was kind to everyone she met. Her remarkable ability to make others feel important, cared about, and deeply loved left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Kellee's ability to make the best of everything with hard work and a smile was evident in how she cared for her son, Daniel, in the best way possible, given the circumstances of his Dravet Syndrome. She lived a life of servitude for her family, friends, and God, always grateful for what she had and what she could do in life.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Dan; daughters, Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Chad Gubbels) Trepp and Madeleine Trepp, both of Ankeny; son, Daniel C. Trepp of Clarion; grandchildren, Coraline, Sullivan, and Audrey; siblings, Micheleen (Judge David) Staudt of Cedar Falls, Brian (Monica) Shey of Chicago, IL, Mark Shey of Kenosha, WI, Erin (Greg) Tasler of Webster City, Georgeann (Keith) Ligori of Tampa, FL, Dr. Michael (Teresa) Shey of Webster City; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was also a beloved sister-in-law to Marty (Terri) Trepp of Urbandale, Becca (Duane) Wilson of Eagle Grove, Laura (Jim) Oates of Peotone, IL, and many nieces, nephews, and more extended family. All of her patients and staff, including Djuna Kauffman, were considered family, but especially her dental assistant of 26 years, Mindy Morgan, who deserves a special mention for her dedication and service.

Kellee was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. George and Mary Shey. She was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church as well as many other community activities, including being a board member at The Kendall Young Library for several years. In addition to traveling, Kellee enjoyed biking in RAGBRAI, gardening, and reading books. She cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. Kellee will be remembered for her smile, laughter, and joy of life. And as always, take the trip.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. A Rosary and scripture service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2024, followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Kellee’s memory to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School or the Dravet Syndrome Foundation. https://dravetfoundation.org/don

2024 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Game Show & Outstanding Host for a Game Show

dr who cruise

Weekly Commentary (Updated: May 13, 2024) : Indie streaming platform Dropout, formerly known as CollegeHumor, is aiming for recognition at this year’s Primetime Emmys with a bold campaign to secure its first nominations . Its flagship series, “Game Changer,” hosted by Dropout CEO Sam Reich, revolutionizing the traditional game show format, is among the dark horse contenders vying for recognition. The blend of improv comedy and intense competition has not only enthralled audiences but also spawned three successful spinoffs: “Dirty Laundry,” “Make Some Noise,” and “Play It by Ear.” With many clips going viral on social media, it may be just the fresh new content Emmy voters are seeking. Imagine a newbie like a Dropout pushing out major studio titles — It’s a true David vs. Goliath in the awards race.

Still, Reich and his beloved competition gag face Emmy staples within the TV industry.

Pat Sajak, the iconic host of “Wheel of Fortune” since 1981, will take his final spin of the wheel on Friday, June 7, just before Emmy voting opens. This marks the game show and host category’s second year in the Primetime lineup. While the transition might appear seamless regarding voter demographics, Sajak’s name may not automatically resonate with the younger and newer members invited by the TV Academy. As the Academy diversifies its voter base, past winners like Keke Palmer for “Password” and contenders like “Game Changer” are gaining serious consideration.

Nevertheless, Sajak remains a revered figure in hosting, boasting 21 nominations and three wins (at the Daytime Emmys), the third most in history behind the late Alex Trebek (with 32) and Bob Barker (at 23). His competition will include household names like Ken Jennings (“Jeopardy”), Steve Harvey (“Family Feud”), Elizabeth Banks (“Press Your Luck”) and more, with a landscape that could yield one or two surprises down the line.

The first initial projections for outstanding game show and host for a game show are below. Predictions are updated every Thursday, and more shows and contenders can be added (or removed) over the next couple of weeks.

Other awards predictions, about the primetime emmy awards.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship, and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements.
