How to Get From Kuala Lumpur to Penang Island

To get from Kuala Lumpur to Penang Island, you can take a bus, KTM train or catch a flight. The quickest option to get to Penang is to take a short haul flight, however it is not the most budget friendly option in comparison to taking a bus or a train. 

You can choose to fly from KLIA/ KLIA 2 or Subang Airport. The price for a one way ticket varies between RM 88.65 – RM 354.60 ( $20 – $80) depending on the season and flight operator. The flight duration is only one hour from Kuala Lumpur to Penang. 

Some of the more popular flight operators from KL to Penang are Air Asia, Malindo Air, Malaysia Airlines and Firefly.

The best way to catch a train to Penang is from KL Sentral heading to Butterworth, Penang. One way tickets cost between RM 57 – RM 80 ( $13 – $18) with a journey duration of 4 hours. 

The best train to catch is the ETS High-Speed train. It is a relaxing way to reach Butterworth Penang from KL overland, while enjoying a scenic view along the way. 

Once you arrive at Butterworth, you just need to take a 15 minute ferry ride to Georgetown Penang Island. The ferry departs every 30 minutes during peak hours and every 60 minutes during off peak hours. 

The ferry only cost RM 1.20 ( $0.40 cents) for adults and RM 0.60 cents ( $0.20 cents) for children between 5-12 years old. Be sure you spare some change with you! 

Bus is the cheapest and most popular way to get to Penang from KL. You can catch a bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), located next to Bandar Tasik Selatan Railway Station. 

One way bus tickets cost around RM 27 – RM 52 ( $6 – $12) depending on the coach services. 

You can choose from many different bus operators including Sri Maju Group, KKKL Express, Seasons Express, Billion Star Express and more.

The bus journey takes around 5 hours, the longest in comparison to taking a flight or train. It can sometimes be longer if there is bad traffic in KL. Since it is a long drive, the bus makes a stop along the journey for a toilet break or food stop. 

How Many Days Should You Spend in Penang?

You should spend at least 3 days in Penang to experience most of it!  With at least a three day trip, you can explore all the must-visit attractions on the island at a more relaxing pace.
