A popular destination for long weekend trips, especially during the summer, Sag Harbor is one of the more low-key Hampton villages. Situated in both East Hampton and Southampton , this old whaling village is bordered by the immense displays of wealth (we're talking insanely massive mansions) the Hamptons are known for.

What sweet Sag Harbor lacks, however, is the overt snobbery found in its neighboring towns. Instead, you'll find historic homes peppered throughout town, an adorable Main street with a variety of restaurants, and stores you can (sometimes) afford to shop in.

The downtown core is where you'll find most of the shops and restaurants. This is also where you'll find Canalside , Buffalo's beautiful waterfront, which offers public ice-skating, curling, ice bumper cars, and ice bicycles throughout the winter months.

During summer, this is the place to admire the water views from an Adirondack chair, catch live music at an outdoor concert, or take a long, romantic stroll along the boardwalk.

Kingston is a charming waterfront city with deep historic roots. Set just outside the Catskills, this unassuming town is literally as pretty as a postcard and offers a slew of fun things to do on a weekend away. But did you know that NYC is less than 1% of the landmass of New York State? There are endless things to do in Upstate New York, too! Fun Fact: The dictionary defines “Upstate” as whatever is north of you. Since most of New York State’s population lives in the NYC region, we’ll define Upstate New York relative to NYC. AKA: Everything north of NYC. From the Adirondacks to Buffalo to the Catskills. Don’t fight us on this one. In addition to the dictionary, even Wikipedia agrees with this definition !

Hiking & Farm Experience with Llamas/Alpacas

If you love a hands-on experience with animals, this is the perfect activity! Llamas and alpacas are soft and cuddly creatures with an exciting history. From homestead owner and educator Andrea , you can learn all about camelids (the biological family containing alpaca and llama members) while getting up close and personal.

Walk through magnificent pastures and fields, strolling alongside llamas and alpacas with a large or private group. Don’t forget to take a llama selfie with the countryside backdrop!

Farm Animal Cuddles

There are a ton of farm animal sanctuaries and small farms in Upstate New York. I would recommend avoiding sanctuaries that house wild and exotic animals without researching beforehand; look into how they procured the animals, the history of the establishment, whether they breed these animals, etc.

On the other hand, farm animal sanctuaries are generally small farms that have saved or purchased animals to keep them away from slaughterhouses or similar fates. These farms may breed and raise animals themselves, but their goal is to keep these creatures happy and safe. Animals housed here are generally comfortable interacting with humans, especially children, individuals with autism, or people who suffer from anxiety. Cuddling up with a pig or goat can really brighten your day–except when a goat is in a mood and turns mean!

Cool Off in a Swimming Hole

Lakes scattered across the Catskill Mountains are perfect places to rent a cabin for the weekend. There are tons of swimming holes and hikes in the region, perfect for cooling off in on a hot summer day. With swimming holes growing in popularity, keep in mind that they may get crowded. Peekamoose Blue Hole is the most well-known, making it one of the most sought-after spots for many travelers.

You can visit a few lesser-known swimming holes if you want to avoid crowds. Diamond Notch Falls lies at the end of several different hiking trails. Kaaterskill Falls is another great swimming spot requiring a steep hike, with a swimming hole below the waterfall; avoid this spot on the weekends to miss the crowds.

Otter Falls is another great swimming hole located at the basin of 30-foot cascading falls. In the wet months, the pool is 6 to 8 feet deep. The dry months leave a shallow pool that is still perfect for cooling off in after a hike.

Visit the Town of Woodstock

It may surprise you to know that Woodstock, NY was not the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. This famous spectacle actually occurred in Bethel, NY, 60 miles southwest. If you’re looking to attend a show on these infamous grounds, performances at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts are still running strong!

Aside from this misconception, Woodstock is still an amazing town worth visiting. The local shops, eateries, and cafes exude the same ideology and allure behind the draw of the Woodstock Music Festival. There are amazing boutiques on Main Street where you can support local artisans and artists of the Catskills.

Rail Explorers Railroad Tours

See the natural sights of Phoenicia, NY, with this unique railroad tour! Rail Explorers set you up on the tracks with an electric pedal-powered rail bike. Tours are offered at all hours (day or night), but I recommend a daytime tour to catch the views–unless it’s Halloween!

This experience is accessible to all and requires light exercise, which is perfect for doing with friends or family. While you may not get tired, paying attention on the tracks so as not to bump into the person in front or back of you is important.

I recommend booking the Golden Hour tour in the fall. Before your ride, hit the iconic Phoenicia Diner in town. Staying overnight? Hotel Mountain Brook in Kingston is a cute and cozy place to stay.

Go Hiking in the Catskills

• Catskill Hiking and Photography Experience: This half-day hike is a fun experience if you want photographic memories of your time in the Catskills. The Catskill Hiking and Pro Photography Experience provides you with an expert hiking guide and adventure photographer to show you the best scenic views and hidden secrets of the mountains. Hikes can be adjusted based on your skill level and expertise. Throughout the trip, your guide will snap Instagram-worthy photos to be emailed after the hike.
• Minnewaska State Park: Full of trails for hikers of all levels. Here, you’ll find waterfalls, lakes, and much more. This is one of our favorite places to go hiking in the Catskills.
• Giant Ledge : Giant Ledge is a moderate out-and-back hike that boasts the best views of all hikes in the mountain range! Adjacent to the trail are fire ledges with views that will leave you speechless. For hiking enthusiasts, this is a great spot to camp out for stargazing and wake up to a gorgeous sunrise.
• Ashokan Rail Trail (“ART”) : This hike opened in 2019 and is a shared recreational trail that lines the northern section of the Ashokan Reservoir in West Hurley. The surface of the trail is packed with crushed stone and fully accessible. Ashokan Rail Trail is an easy out-and-back hike for those looking for a leisurely stroll with great views.  

The Finger Lakes, NY

If you couldn’t tell by now, we LOVE the Finger Lakes region. This region has so many cute places to stay and even more things to keep you busy.

Explore Harriet Tubman’s Home

Step into the prior home of Harriet Tubman in Auburn, New York. This residence is where she spent the latter part of her life, and it’s now a United States National Park . Tours of the home are offered twice a day, and you must reserve a spot in advance. Harriet Tubman was one of American history’s most inspirational abolitionists, political activists, and female military leaders. Learning about her in her former home is quite the experience.

As of March 2022, tours inside the property were prohibited, and only outdoor tours were available. Call to check before making your tour reservation to confirm.

Join a Finger Lakes Wine Tasting Tour

The Finger Lakes tasting is fantastic, with three popular trails to choose from: Cayuga Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and Keuka Wine Trail. There are over a hundred wineries across the region between these three trails, with endless samples of local creations. You can visit each location on your own (with a safe ride, of course, or by booking private transportation) or book a Finger Lakes wine tour.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is one of our favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes, especially if you love sipping Rieslings. Rieslings rule the Finger Lakes region, so if you are a white wine drinker, this is where you want to be.

Go Kayaking or Boating on a Finger Lake

The Finger Lakes is a kayaking paradise. You can kayak and boat most everywhere, with the most popular spots being Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Canandaigua Lake. Boating is so popular in the region that most vacation homes will actually store kayaks for their guests to use on their trips. If that’s not the case, you can easily rent one at several local agencies .  

If you own your kayak, you just have to get it out on the water! Ten launch sites are available across several lakes for visitors to use. For a full boat launch list , check with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for details.

You can also book a boat tour with local operators who can often combine boat tours with winery visits and other fun activities. Ending your kayak or boat trip with a bottle of local Finger Lakes wine is the cherry on top of a fantastic day.

Dine at FLX Table in Geneva

New York City is not the only stellar food scene in the state. Foodies love the Finger Lakes for it’s amazing dining opportunities and unique cuisine. F.L.X. Table in Geneva is a small eatery with only 14 seats offering a 4-course, pre-set meal for dinner from Thursday to Monday. You get to share the space with the chefs crafting your meal in an intimate and charming atmosphere that connects everyone in the room. It feels like a personal dinner party!

I love that the prix fixe menu constantly changes, bringing fresh meal options to fit the season. Past favorites include dishes like Chicken Royal served with quinoa and burgundy truffle. Reservations can be tough at F.L.X., but there are other options to taste this cuisine through F.L.X. Bird for delicious fried chicken.

Horseback Riding Tours in Burdett

We love Watkins Glen State Park ­–its natural beauty is unparallel to any park you’ll find in most of the state.  Horseback riding allows you to explore the park from a unique vantage point, with tours available through Painted Bar Stables . Stroll by on horseback some of the best waterfalls in New York State! It won’t take long to see why this region is known for its natural wonders and great wine.

Buttermilk Falls State Park is one of our favorites, with stunning waterfalls and gorges. We also recommend checking out Finger Lakes National Forest . This gem has 30 miles of trails scattered through lush woods and serene pastures that sometimes have cattle grazing depending on the season.

Shop at the Ithaca Farmers Market

Tucked away on the shores of Lake Cayuga is the friendly young college town of Ithaca. We love this area, especially the Ithaca Farmers Market , which has been operating since 1973! You can peruse more than 130 vendors at the market selling produce and handmade goodies. If you’re looking to hike or horseback ride in the Finger Lakes, this is a great place to stop and grab some snacks for your trip. This is one of my favorite towns in the Finger Lakes !

During the summer months, the market is spread across a park on the Cayuga Lake waterfront with spectacular views to pair with your local finds. The market is set up in the winter months at the Triphammer Marketplace to allow growers a full year to sell. Check the website for changes.

Explore Corning’s Museum of Glass

Corning may be a small city, but it has one of the world’s largest spaces dedicated to the art of contemporary glass making and design! The more museums I’ve visited in my travels, the more they feel the same–a little dark, full of paintings in ornate frames, room after room of an older grand old building once some famous or rich’s person’s home.  But the Museum of Glass in Corning truly blew me away.

This attraction allows you to get up close to the glass-blowing process, watching artists create before your eyes. You can even learn to make glass yourself by signing up for a short class ! Everyone in your group will enjoy the interactive galleries and exhibits teaching you about the history of glassmaking and the secrets behind this stunning art technique.

Ride on a Hot Air Balloon Over Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park has some of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the entire country­–there’s a reason it’s nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the East!” One of the most amazing ways to experience the full beauty of this park is on a hot air balloon ride, soaring above the breathtaking views. Don’t like heights? You can hike and walk instead!

THE Adirondacks REGION

We ADORE the Adirondack Park. Between all the cute towns in the Adirondacks to visit year-round and the host of hidden gems in Upstate New York, you’ll quickly fall in love with this region too.

Lake Gorge Ice Castles and Caves

The Ice Castles and Caves in Lake George are an award-winning attraction every ice and snow lover has to experience. Kids and adults alike love to explore the ice mazes, slides, tunnels, fountains, and more. As the season continues, more is added to the Ice Castles, so you’re never visiting the same place twice.

It’s going to be cold in this frozen world, so dress warmly. You can purchase tickets online for the Ice Castles from the end of January to the end of February. The attraction could extend beyond these months if the weather permits.

Hike the Mountains of the Adirondacks

• Indian Head Hike : You can still catch killer views of the Adirondacks without scaling the high peaks. Indian Head has a rocky overlook with stellar views of the Lower Ausable Lake without putting too much effort into getting there. It’s not an easy breezy hike, but it’s certainly not the most difficult around.
• Cobble Lookout : If you want more of a walk than a hike, the trail to Cobble Head is only 2 ½ miles and great for leisurely stroll. It only takes about an hour, and you’re still rewarded with picturesque views.
• Whiteface Mountain : For hiking enthusiasts looking for a challenge, Whiteface Mountain is a popular area to challenge your skill. Hiking on Whiteface is open all year round, rain or shine, ice or snow. Make sure you’re prepared for this hike and start early to get the most out of your day.

Tour the Ausable Chasm

Ausable Chasm is an exciting canyon in the Adirondacks with a ton of activities to keep you busy. You must pay a fee to enter; even the hiking trails cost a fee, but they’re worth it. Paying for a tour will get you a package of tube rides, a guided tour of the canyon and caves, and more.

We recommend taking the day to explore the Ausable Chasm. It’s the perfect attraction for New Yorkers who want to experience the natural beauty in their own backyard.

Snowshoeing in the Adirondacks

The Adirondacks are one of the best places for an Upstate New York winter getaway if you love to ski. If you’re staying in or near Lake Placid, you have to check out Cascade X-C Ski Center. This place has everything you need, from rentals to apparel to equipment, and 12+ miles of trails! They also have a restaurant and lodging accommodations at the bunkhouse.

Renting an iconic cabin in the mountains is a dream, but it’s not always affordable. Staying at the bunkhouse is a great way to pay discounted rates at the ski center while getting that traditional Upstate New York lodging experience.

Winter Wonderland Lodging Experience

Some of our favorite cute cabin and lodge rentals in Upstate New York are right in the Adirondacks. They range from grand to cozy, but all give you that Great Camp vibe.

• Whiteface Lodge : Staying at the Whiteface Lodge is experiencing Lake Placid at its finest. This luxury hotel and spa are in the heart of the mountains. It’s surrounded by hiking trails to keep you busy all day, allowing you to end with a massage or a 3-course meal. (Nightcaps are available too!)
• Other favorite amenities include a two-lane bowling alley and a small movie theatre. This is a wonderful accommodation for those who want to relax for a few days, with tons of onsite entertainment available.
• Lake Placid Lodge : For a luxury experience that is on the quieter side, try booking a room at the Lake Placid Lodge . There is a gorgeous outdoor space here extending right up to the shores of Lake Placid.
• Mirror Lake: If you love Mirror Lake as much as we do, you must try staying a night or two at Mirror Lake Inn. Their restaurant + bar is hands down one of our favorite places to eat in Lake Placid!

Swimming/Kayaking in the Adirondack Lakes (Like Lake George)

Visiting Lake George is the perfect long weekend getaway from New York City and the ultimate Upstate New York experience. Try renting a cabin by the beach for the ultimate lake vacation in the summer. There are a ton of boat tours in the area and places to rent kayaks and water skis, with lessons available to book.

When it gets hot, try grabbing a cool treat from Lake George Ice Cream in town. This is especially perfect for those spending the day at Million Dollar Beach. If you’re looking for a hiking trail to pass the time, Lake George is the gateway to the Adirondacks and has plenty.

Bonus : In the winter, Lake George offers several outdoor opportunities as well. And even hosts a Winter Festival , which includes an ice castle.

The Hudson Valley

Grab a drink at the cider house.

In the fall, the Hudson Valley turns into apple country. And every apple has the capability to turn into a tart, crisp, delicious cider. While not everyone has tried apple cider, this was certainly a popular drink back in the day. Hudson Valley cider mills are bringing back the hype around cider, and there are dozens of places you can go to sample the goods.

Kettleborough Cider House is one of our favorites and has a spectacular view of Shawangunk Ridge. Twin Star Orchards is another premier spot, often providing live music and food to buy. Some cider houses also double as an orchard or farms where you can pick apples!

Take a Private Helicopter Tour in the Hudson Valley

The fall foliage in the Hudson Valley is breathtaking, especially from a bird’s eye view. You can book a Private Fall Foliage Helicopter Tour of the Hudson Valley that will take you high above the tree tops to soak in all the natural fall colors. This trip leaves right from Manhattan and takes about 30 minutes total, perfect for a quick trip out of New York City.

Persue Art at Dia Beacon Museum

Love contemporary art? Dia Beacon is a hub for contemporary artists set on the shore of the Hudson River.  The museum itself is in an old Nabisco box-printing favorite, with ethereal nature lighting you must see to believe. Art displays range from the 1960s to the present day and feature a number of rotating exhibits.

If you want to ditch your car (or don’t have one), you can take the Metro-North Hudson Line train from Grand Central Station all the way to Beacon. The museum is within walking distance from there and close to tons of cafés, shops, and restaurants on Main Street. Our favorite places here are All You Knead Artisan Bakers and Reserva Wine Bar .

Visit Hudson Valley Wineries

There’s another way to explore the natural beauties of the Hudson Valley without having to hike around­–visiting wineries. Wineries in the Hudson Valley are sprawled across acres of stunning fields, with mountain backgrounds, sometimes with views of lakes and rivers Not to mention, wineries in this area of the state know how to craft a delicious glass of wine!

Robibero Winery near New Paltz has stunning views of the Shawangunk Mountain range–the drive here from New York City is simply gorgeous. Robibero was voted one of the best wineries in the Hudson Valley for handcrafted batches. Other popular spots include Benmarl Winery in the rolling hill of Marlboro with views of the Hudson River and Magnanini Winery, Restaurant & Distillery in Walkill.

Hike Through the Hudson Valley

• Anthony’s Nose : This is a perfect route if you want an easy out-and-back hike you can complete in under 4 hours. Anthony’s Nose boasts fantastic views of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain, and Bear Mountain Bridge. You can take one of two paths up the mountain; my favorite part is the way back!
• Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze : Set on the Mohonk Preserve, this unique hike and rock scramble is challenging. You have to put in a lot of effort to get the reward of the view, but it’s worth every second. The viewpoint overlooks Shawangunk Ridge and its beautiful surroundings.
• Mount Beacon : Mount Beacon checks all the boxes for me when it comes to a perfect hike. This is not an easy breezy hike by any means, but it’s not a grueling struggle either. The views from the top are breathtaking, and it only takes a half day to finish, so you can enjoy some food in downtown Beacon when you’re done.
• Taconic Mountain : Hiking the Taconic Mountains is challenging, but the reward is worth the effort. This trail is nestled in Dutchess County, where New York meets Connecticut and Massachusetts. When you get to the top, you can see views of the Berkshires, Catskills, and the Hudson River. The trail is rugged and steep. Spikes are recommended if you have them, and bring lots of water.  

Visit NY’s Original Capital: Kingston

You heard right; Kingston used to be New York State’s original capital! It’s a small town along the river, full of charming brick buildings full of shops, and eateries. There is history around every corner, and it’s the perfect town for a weekend getaway from NYC.

Visit the bookstore at Four Corner, the only intersection in the country where all four buildings dating back to the Revolutionary War era. You can visit the farmers’ markets around town or take a boat tour along the Hudson River. Kingston is the perfect distance from the Catskills and the Hudson Valley.

The Stockade District of Kingston has a ton of beautiful buildings and historic features that can serve as a backdrop to a photo shoot. Book an Uptown Kingston photographer for a personal or group photoshoot while you walk and explore.

See Outdoor Sculptures at Storm King Arts Center

Exploring the open-air museum at Storm King Arts Center is out of this world. It beats an old stuffy, dark museum by far and offers visitors access to the country’s largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures!

Take your time here wandering around the grounds and really taking in works of art like Suspended or the Three-Legged Buddha . These sculptures are so large you’re barely going to notice any of the other visitors while you are transfixed on all the beautiful pieces.  

The Capital Area

Like most other institutional systems in our country, the food system is often a deeply racist mechanism. Committed to uprooting racism and seeding over sovereignty, Soul Fire Farm is an Afro-Indigenous-centered community that goes deeper than simply planting food.

Soul Fire Farm provides amazing training programs for Black and Brown farmers and growers. They also offer workshops for urban youth and more. You can get involved with their mission in so many ways, even if you’re just visiting. Take a tour, volunteer at the farm, or attend a half-day public speaking event to show your support.

Visit Troy, NY

Troy, NY is just north of Albany and is home to the famous Uncle Sam! Once a manufacturing city, Troy has transformed into a cultural and economic hub with an exciting waterfront full of attractions and restaurants. It’s also known as Collar City for supporting twenty-six shirt manufacturing facilities back in 1901!

Check out the Burden Iron Works Museum , which formerly housed the Burden Water Wheel–the most powerful vertical water wheel in history. If you’re hungry, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is a nationally acclaimed restaurant with award-winning sauces and dishes. Then, take a stroll from the Oakwood Cemetery , with 29 miles of roads and thousands of historic graves surrounding 4 manmade lakes.

Relax in Saratoga Springs at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa

It’s safe to say that the last couple of years has been stressful for us all. There is no better time than now to hit the spa to relax your tired muscles. One of the coolest places to visit in Upstate New York to do this is Saratoga Springs Spa Resort . This gem has run for 85 years and uses the natural underground spring waters for a number of treatments.  

Get a facial, mineral bath, or massage at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa almost every day except on major holidays. A visit here is an affordable method of muscle relaxation that will allow you to get your body back on track.

Tour Albany: The New York State Capital!

While it’s always been important to stay involved in government policies on all levels, it’s become even more crucial in the past few years. Life-altering legislation is being fought out at the state level that could significantly affect how we live our lives. So, in return, let’s get to know New York State government a little better!

You can tour the New York State Capital building in Albany and learn all about its history and the government officials who created our state’s legislation. This has to be one of the coolest things to do in New York’s capital city­, not to mention meaningful.

Learn About the Underground Railroad Education Center

In New York State, two of the most well-known and influential Black abolitionists were Harriet and Stephen Myers. These two were central figures of the Underground Railroad in the state, and their residence is now home to the Underground Railroad Education Center . Take a tour of the home or attend events to learn all about the role everyday citizens played in ensuring a more democratic future for everyone equally.

Born a slave, Stephen Myers became a leading anti-slavery activist in the northeast region after slavery was abolished in 1827. Together, Harriet and Stephen Myers helped people escape slavery for decades out of their homes and worked on a newspaper that espoused abolitionist ideas.  

Central New York Region

Central New York has just as many opportunities to splash in the water as the Finger Lakes and Great Lakes regions.  Just southeast of Syracuse, visitors can stop at Chittenango Falls State Park, where they can have a picnic lunch, take a stroll, or hike to a dazzling waterfall.

We love this small park because it’s easy to walk around and access the waterfalls. It doesn’t take a lot of time or preparation to visit Chittenango Falls State Park, and they’re even a little footbridge for a casual stop.

Shop Around at Syracuse Antiques Exchange

If you love antiques, you have to spend some time at Syracuse Antiques Exchange , featuring four floors full of treasures. This is the largest and longest-running antique store in the state, outside of New York City. You’ll find a huge collection of Victorian and Midcentury furniture, unique lighting fixtures, and tons more to explore.  

Antique shopping may be a fun hobby, but it can quickly become costly if you’re not careful. Syracuse Antiques Exchange offers is a great place to buy your first antique, with various price ranges that would set you too far back.

Spend the Day at Green Lakes State Park

Green Lakes State Park is one of our favorite places for cabin rentals in Upstate New York. There are two lakes in the park, campgrounds with cabins for rent, and a fantastic golf course. The property is covered in towering woods and has miles of hiking trails for summer hikes or snowshoeing adventures in the winter.  

If you’re in the Syracuse area, Green Lakes State Park is super close. Visiting here for the day is a perfect break from the hustle of busy city life and a way to reconnect with yourself in nature. You’ll be relaxed and focused when returning to one of the best cities in Upstate New York.

Check Out Breweries in Syracuse

Craft beer brewing has burst in popularity over the past few years, especially in bustling cities like Syracuse. There are more breweries in the city than you’ll be able to visit in one trip. But at least you can hit a few in between other activities in the area.

Buried Acorn Brewing Company is a popular spot for sour beer and ale lovers. It features some of the best sour brews in the city, and it’s not far from Onondaga Lake. If you’re in the rural part of the Syracuse suburbs, you’ll want to hit Heritage Hill Brewhouse , boasting fantastic views of the downtown area from inside and outside the taproom. Plus, this place has killer food!

Go Mining for Herkimer Diamonds

While Herkimer diamonds are technically real diamonds (they’re quartz crystals), these beautiful treasures are really fun to find! You get to keep everything you find when mining at the Herkimer Diamond Mines set right in Herkimer, NY.

Herkimer Diamonds are stunning, and even more so when you turn them into jewelry at the Artisan Center. Don’t worry if you forget your mining hammer! The admission price will cover the cost of borrowing one from the mines.

Chimney Bluffs Hike along Lake Ontario

Commonly known as ‘The Bluffs’ in communities across Central New York, Chimney Bluffs State Park is a picturesque scene on the shores of Lake Ontario with dramatic spikey “bluffs” along the waterfront. Visiting this park on a summer day was one of our favorite things to do in Oswego when we were students there! The bluffs are so dramatic and look stunning on the shore.

There is a myriad of trails along The Bluffs you can walk along. It’s not uncommon to find students from SUNY Oswego or other local colleges soaking up a little bit of warmth on the sand before the cold hits Central New York.

WESTERN + Niagara Frontier NY Area

More than 30,000 vineyards are spread across the Lake Erie Grape Belt set along a 50-mile wine trail known as Lake Erie Wine Country in Chautauqua County . These vineyards produce about 65% of the state’s entire grape harvest, shipping off to 35 countries! Wine tasting in this area is a treat; they host year-round events and tours to explore it all! Camp and Hike at Allegheny State Park

Allegheny State Park is an exceptional place for camping, hiking, boating, and all things outdoors just north of the Allegheny National Forest . The Quaker area in the park has two lakes, campgrounds, and a sandy beach for swimming and fishing. You can also launch canoes and kayaks from Friend’s Boat Launch. See the Epic Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is more than just a big waterfall­–it’s a State Park, its own city, and an internationally-known attraction for visitors worldwide! Visiting Niagara Falls is one of the coolest things to do in Upstate New York, with more than enough in the surrounding area to keep you busy.

Daring visitors can take a boat tour under the falls. (Be prepared to get wet!) You can also walk on the rails around the shore, hit the casino, visit an amusement park, and so much more. Bring your passport just in case you want to peruse the Canadian side of the falls for a different experience.  

Hop Around the Museums in Buffalo

There are tons of museums in Buffalo just waiting for you to soak up all the history. Museum hopping is one of the best things to do in New York State. One of our favorites is the Buffalo Museum of Science , where your inner child will spring out immediately when hitting the dinosaur fossil exhibit. Next, you can head to the Buffalo History Museum , where you can explore the development of the Western New York frontier.

Art lovers should certainly not miss the Albright-Knox Art Gallery , featuring exhibits and collections of contemporary art reflecting present culture. For a rare museum, the Museum of disABILITY History is a unique attraction to educate the public on people with disabilities, their treatments, and their contributions to history. Need a few more? Taste Craft Beers at Buffalo Breweries

Micro-breweries in New York State are some of the best in the country, and the industry continues to grow. Buffalo is no exception when it comes to tasty breweries, especially in the last decade.  Some are so exclusive you can’t find them outside Western New York!

Big Ditch Brewing Company is a perfect place to relax with an IPA or ale and eat some snacks. The Thin Man Brewery offers a huge rotating tap list and includes a delicious IPA. Some of our other favorites include Community Beer Works and Resurgence Brewing Company , both worth the stop.  

Hungry? Buffalo has an extremely underrated foodie scene, perfect for exploring after some tasty beers. You’ll love tasting different dishes at the best restaurants in Buffalo, NY .

20 Best Places to Visit in Upstate New York

From waterfalls to wineries, there's plenty to see in the Empire State beyond the Big Apple.

New York might be best known for the city that never sleeps, but there's a whole state beyond the Big Apple to explore. Upstate New York boasts majestic mountains, an abundance of lakes, and charming small towns. There's also a plethora of festivals, history museums, eclectic art offerings, and trendy wineries to visit, not to mention iconic sites like the National Baseball Hall of Fame and, of course, the awe-inspiring Niagara Falls.

For those who haven't yet visited, or want to see more of it, here are 20 of the best places to visit in upstate New York.

Conesus Lake

Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the 11 Finger Lakes, drawing crowds every year for its "Ring of Fire" tradition on July 3, when thousands of flares are lit along its periphery as fireworks explode overhead. Nearby, the tiny hamlet of Lakeville is home to the Little Lake Brewing brewery, one of the stops along the Livingston Libation Loop, which maps out wineries, cideries, and craft microbreweries around the county. While in the region, don't miss the colorful street murals and art scattered among nine villages along the 90-mile self-guided Inspirations Trail.

Cooperstown

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is just one of the notable attractions worth visiting in this quaint village. The Fenimore Art Museum , built on land once owned by novelist James Fenimore Cooper (the town is named for the author's father, William), features an impressive collection of American works. The Glimmerglass Festival , held each summer, lures opera lovers from far and wide. Visitors to nearby Howe Caverns (about 38 miles east), can go caving or spelunking at New York state's second-most-visited natural attraction.

Letchworth State Park

Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park features an impressive gorge carved out over centuries by the Genesee River. You'll find dozens of camera-ready waterfalls where the river dramatically crashes down along shale, limestone, and sandstone cliffs that rise 550 feet at their highest point. An Autism Nature Trail , the first in the country designed for people on the autism spectrum, includes eight marked sensory stations spread across a one-mile loop.

Niagara Falls

In addition to the iconic Niagara Falls, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is worth a stop to learn more about the important role the village of Niagara Falls played in the Underground Railroad because of its accessibility and proximity to the border. The center is set in an 1863 Customs House near the old International Suspension Bridge, where heroes like Harriet Tubman led people to freedom across the border in Canada. The museum's permanent exhibit, " One More River to Cross ," received the 2019 Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History.

Located at the southwestern end of Chautauqua Lake, Jamestown is best known as the hometown of comedienne Lucille Ball. Visitors with an appreciation for the art should pop by the National Comedy Center museum. For something more intellectual, the renowned Chautauqua Institution is just under a half-hour's drive up the lake, and each summer features speakers, performers, and programs focused on the "exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life."

Ellicottville

About an hour south of Buffalo by car, this quaint village in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains exudes charm, as witnessed by the well-preserved and restored homes and buildings dating back to the 19th century. It's also where western New York sports enthusiasts and skiers go to mountain bike, hike, or slalom down the 60 slopes and trails at neighboring Holiday Valley Resort .

Seneca Falls

Situated at the north end of Cayuga Lake, this historic spot is believed to be the inspiration for the town of Bedford Falls in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." (There's even a museum dedicated to the film .) Most notably, though, is the important role it played in the women's rights movement — it hosted the first Women's Rights Convention in 1848. The town's Convention Days each July attract crowds, and the Women's Rights National Historical Park is worth visiting, too. You can also toast to the suffragettes while wine tasting along one of the many nearby Finger Lakes wine trails.

Skaneateles

This affluent town whose name means "long lake" in Iroquoian is another central New York destination known for its wine tasting and fall foliage. It's also a favorite among avid cyclists who come to pedal the 32-mile trail around the lake. Each year, starting Thanksgiving weekend, the town hosts its Dickens Christmas celebration with live entertainment, horse and wagon rides, and a cast of Dickensian characters.

Lake George

Few lakes around New York state are known for scuba diving, so visitors are often surprised to discover that certified divers can explore 18th-century shipwrecks at the bottom of Lake George, including the oldest intact warship in North America. Vacationers flock to this town in the Adirondack region each summer — the crowds can get thick, but there's also plenty of winter fun to be had, including snowshoeing and a family-focused carnival every February.

Saranac Lake

The Adirondack Mountains have beckoned city dwellers for centuries, including tycoons like the Guggenheims and Vanderbilts, who owned rustic yet luxurious compounds known as the Great Camps. The Point , once a Rockefeller Great Camp, still welcomes guests with all-inclusive stays that hearken back to that time, complete with black-tie dinners. The resort is near the village of Saranac Lake, nestled between the mountains and lakes and filled with inviting boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

Not only is Ithaca a top-notch college town but it's also a natural wonderland with breathtaking gorges, parks, and Taughannock Falls, which is three times the height of Niagara Falls. There's an abundance of activities around the city, too, including a botanical garden, boat tours, wine trails, and a self-guided Discovery Trail that highlights local history, astronomy, and earth science. Watkins Glen and Montour Falls

In upstate New York, many destinations are defined by their proximity to one of the state's lakes — and so it is with Watkins Glen, on the southern end of Seneca Lake. Best known for its legendary auto-racing history, the Watkins Glen International track has played host to countless races, from the Grand Prix to NASCAR to Formula One. It's also a good jumping-off point to hit the Seneca Lake Wine Trail , which stretches along the length of the lake and is the largest wine trail in the Finger Lakes.

Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs is a popular vacation destination for good reason. There's something classically old-school about spending a day at the famous Saratoga Race Course or at Saratoga Spa State Park , a National Historic Landmark. The art scene is solid, too, with impressive productions at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center , the Spa Little Theater , and other venues.

Thousand Islands

The U.S.-Canadian border snakes along the St. Lawrence River, zigzagging through the spectacular Thousand Islands where the river meets Lake Ontario. The archipelago consists of about 1,800 islands, from small and craggy to large and lush. Visitors converge here each summer and fall to soak up views of picture-perfect lighthouses and dramatic mansions, including the never-inhabited Boldt Castle. On the nearby mainland, check out towns like Clayton and Cape Vincent. Or stop by Sackets Harbor, which has been designated a New York State Heritage Area.

An affluent upstate New York community, idyllic Pittsford is set on the banks of the Erie Canal. Come summer, visitors and locals hit historic downtown for its antiques stores and boutiques. Dine at Schoen Place overlooking the canal, then line up for homemade ice cream at Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery after a day of perusing the shops. Other attractions include neighboring Mendon Ponds Park and The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, about 15 minutes away by car.

Ausable Chasm

In the eastern Adirondacks, not far from Lake Champlain and the Vermont border, Ausable Chasm is a two-mile-long sandstone gorge carved out 500 million years ago. It's another ideal destination for chasing waterfalls (particularly the cascading Rainbow Falls) and exploring the Adirondacks on its many hiking and adventure trails. It's also a stone's throw from the North Star Underground Railroad Museum , which tells the stories of slaves seeking freedom at the Canadian border, located about an hour north by car.

Dia Beacon , a celebrated collection of contemporary art, brought a lot of attention — and visitors — to this city on the banks of the Hudson River. And with that attention came more appreciation for the many other galleries, shops, cafés, breweries, and antiques stores that have taken up residence on its magnetic Main Street. Trek to the top of Mount Beacon or book a boat tour to Pollepel Island (known locally as Bannerman Island), which Indigenous communities believed was haunted by hostile spirits.

About a three-hour drive from New York City, this mountain town welcomes adventurers with its multitude of endorphin-producing activities, including skiing or snowboarding peaks like Windham Mountain . There's a charming Main Street in this "gem of the Catskills," with inviting boutiques, bistros, and galleries. The Wylder Windham hotel features a pickleball court, heated pool, and wine tastings every weekend.

Don't write off Buffalo just because of its infamous winter weather. The city continues to evolve as a tourism destination, with the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House , a historic carousel on the Buffalo Waterfront, and a big expansion of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (previously known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery).

Sylvan Beach

It's a great option for a classic upstate summer vacation, where visitors can spend the day at the town's old-timey amusement park, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or simply relaxing lakeside with a bottle of local vino. Another way to while away the day is on the water: Rent a cottage at the Cove at Sylvan Beach , where each one includes a private pontoon boat.

There are so many beautiful places in New York state to visit that I’m always perplexed as to why visitors rarely branch out beyond New York City and Niagara Falls to explore other destinations and attractions. The whole state of New York is an incredible natural landscape, with lush valleys, towering mountains, and unbelievably pristine lakes.

If you’re starting to think about taking a trip around New York State, I’m sure you’ll find that there are plenty of unique and wonderful places to add to your itinerary.

We’ve put together a 9-day New York State itinerary to help you explore the top landmarks and hidden gems on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip through New York.

Really the only good way to get around New York is by car. If you are flying into New York, without your own car, you will need to rent a car at the airport. I suggest flying in and out of New York City’s airports because there are more connections.

But if you’re not coming from far, you might choose to skip New York City and start somewhere like Buffalo or Albany.

Seven Days in New York Itinerary

When preparing a perfect New York itinerary, you’ll want to consider the types of things you most want to see and do. Since there are so many different activities – from big city to rural backwoods – you’ll probably need to narrow it down a bit.

I think that 9 days is the ideal amount of time to see and explore the best bits of this glorious state. So our one week in New York itinerary will take you through the state’s lake, river, and mountain regions in what will likely feel like a whirlwind trip.

You can always remove any bits and pieces you aren’t keen on and add any that you feel are missing, to make it your own.

Day 1 & 2: New York City

Known as the “Big Apple”, New York City is perhaps one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s a melting pot for business, the arts, and luxury shopping. That’s why we recommend starting your itinerary in the city.

Not only will you likely be flying into one of New York City’s airports to start your trip, it’s a great place to rent a car, and it’s the most active part of the trip, which is always best done first.

Here are a few spots you should consider exploring while in New York City.

• Manhattan – Manhattan serves as the city’s primary central business district. There are many touristy things to do in Manhattan , including going to the eclectic Times Square, watching a show on Broadway, Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center, and seeing the towering Empire State Building.
• Central Park – This gorgeous green space is the largest urban park in New York with lots of things to do. The park has plenty of artificial lakes, meadows, and waterfalls, making it the perfect place for an afternoon picnic.
• Statue of Liberty – This massive neoclassical sculpture is one of the most famous landmarks in the world—a lasting symbol of freedom. Catch a ferry to Liberty Island and marvel at the 305 feet tall copper and steel monument.
• Brooklyn – This New York borough is a great place to wind down the first day of your 7 days in New York state itinerary. Apart from eating wholesome bagels and attending comedy and music events, you can visit the Brooklyn Museum to see their expansive collection of Egyptian and African art.
• Long Island – Enjoy some fun in the sun at Long Island’s famed beaches along the North Shore. This densely populated island is also where you’ll find North Fork wineries and get a chance to taste some of the best wines in the US.

Day 3: Hudson Valley

On day three of your New York itinerary, you’ll leave the hustle and bustle of New York City and head up to Hudson Valley. This forested region of the state boasts incredible vineyards, orchards, and farms.

It’s about a 2-hour drive, depending on traffic, from New York City to Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley is every foodie’s dream. This region attracts many chefs who open and run farm-to-table eateries, thanks to the abundance of farmlands. You’ll also find the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a non-profit farm and research facility.

Some things to add to your Hudson Valley to-do list include:

• Hudson Valley Farmers’ Market – Get the freshest, healthiest, and tastiest foods and local produce from over 30 vendors. You’ll also enjoy a great atmosphere filled with live music and outgoing locals.
• Hudson State Historic Park Walkway – A popular attraction among locals, this 1.28-mile walkway is the perfect spot to see the great Hudson River and the surrounding landscape. You’ll see people walking, cycling, or running here, and the best part – it’s absolutely free to enter all year round.
• Benmarl Winery – Go wine tasting at the oldest vineyard in America. This lush green estate in Marlboro overlooks the Hudson Valley. You can enjoy a fresh cheese platter while you sip your Marlboro Village Blush wine and gaze at the panoramic views.
• Minnewaska State Park Preserve – If you’re a nature lover, look no further than this 22,275-acre preserve. Here you can hike, bike, or simply stroll around and get in touch with nature.

Day 4-5: The Catskill Mountains

Usher in the fourth day of your one week in New York state itinerary with a drive to the breathtaking Catskill Mountains. It’s about a 1-hour drive in good conditions to get there.

Simply known as the Catskills, this mountain range offers excellent hiking, walking, and biking trails. It also has an abundance of wildlife and ski resorts that you’ll fall in love with.

Some fun things you could add to your Catskills itinerary include:

• Take a Craft Beer Tour – The Catskills locals love to have a good time. Plan a craft beer tour and enjoy the best brews from top Catskills breweries. The Shrewd Fox Brewery uses all-natural and non-GMO ingredients sourced locally.
• Hike to Kaaterskill Falls – This adventure is ideal for all the camera-happy hikers. These falls are one of New York’s tallest cascades at 229 feet and the most famous. The trek is about a 1.6-mile round trip and varies in difficulty from easy to hard.

Day 5-6: The Adirondack Mountains

A week in New York may not be enough to explore all that the state has to offer. But one place you should definitely have on your list is the lush Adirondack Mountains. It’s about 3 hours 50 minutes to drive to Lake Placid from the Catskills.

Simply known as the Adirondacks, this chain of mountains has over 2,000 miles of hiking trails, more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, and about 1,200 miles of rivers.

Some things you could enjoy in the Adirondacks include:

• Lake Placid – This upstate New York destination is an alpine village and a lake. The quaint village boasts plenty of hiking trails and green rolling hills. This town is a famous Winter Olympics venue and a hub for snow sports like skiing and snowshoeing.
• Fort Ticonderoga – Learn some history at this 18th-century fort that serves as a strategic point during the American Revolutionary War .
• Whitewater Rafting – With so many rivers in the Adirondacks, going whitewater rafting is a can’t-miss. You can also opt for kayaking or river tubing.

Day 6-7: Thousand Islands

Tucked between the United States and Canadian border, the Thousand Islands archipelago boasts more than 1,800 islands dotted across the St. Lawrence River. This region is a water wonderland offering plenty of outdoor activities and waterparks.

The drive to Thousand Islands is about 2 hours 50 minutes.

You’ll also find plenty of mansions and castles like Singer Castle, featuring Gothic windows and secret passageways. Another beauty is the German-inspired Boldt Castle on Heart Island. There is no shortage of outdoor activities in the Thousand Islands. You can also go fishing, boating, and hiking.

Here are some more activities to consider when visiting Thousand Islands:

• Antique Boat Museum – See America’s leading nautical collection on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The museum has a collection of more than 320 unique boats and thousands of artifacts and archives. It hosts the annual Antique Boat Show and the biennial Antique Raceboat Regatta, which take place in August and September, respectively. The museum is also closed for winter.
• Wellesley Island – This island has several state parks with sandy beaches, hiking trails, and all-season cottages for the perfect upstate New York vacation. You can enjoy outdoor activities like kayaking, cross-country skiing, and trophy fishing.

Day 8: Rochester

Located on Lake Ontario, Rochester is a city full of history and creativity. You’ll find plenty of museums, art galleries, and historical stops. The city’s proximity to the Finger Lakes makes it a popular New York state vacation destination. It’s about a 3-hour drive from the Thousand Islands area.

Thanks to the Genesee River, which runs straight through Rochester’s center, you’ll have access to waterfront parks and restaurants. Outdoor activities you may enjoy include hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. In winter, tourists love skiing and snowboarding.

Thrill seekers will appreciate visiting the Seabreeze Amusement Park, a historic fun park.

Other Rochester activities you can do include:

• The Strong National Museum of Play – You’ll have access to the museum’s vast collection of toys and dolls. The museum’s highly interactive collection of toys teaches you about the history of play.

Day 9: Niagara Falls

The final stop on your itinerary needs no introduction. Niagara Falls attracts over 30 million visitors a year, and for good reason. This 16.83 sqm natural wonder is part of the Niagara Falls State Park, which straddles Canada and the United States.

You’ll want to get views of the falls from numerous different vantage points . Everyone’s favorite is from the Maid of the Mist boat tour , where you’ll come upon the falls from below. You can also see the falls from the Observation Tower or Prospect Point Viewing Area at Niagara Falls State Park, or the viewing ledge at Terrapin Point on Goat Island.

You'd never guess that this 150-acre estate is located in the U.S., let alone that it's only around 70 miles from New York City. Constructed in 1911, the mansion – then the summer home of industrialist Robert Goet – sits in the countryside of the Hudson Valley, intended to resemble the villas of Tuscany at the time. Now a Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel , Glenmere Mansion features more than a dozen guest rooms, each one thoughtfully redesigned and unique. Most rooms have fireplaces, and many offer terraces.

Known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is the original romantic getaway in New York. Couples in search of romance have been visiting the region since the 1800s, particularly after the Erie Canal opened. Hutton Brickyards: Kingston

The Hudson Valley's last architecturally intact brick manufactory, Hutton Brickyards, sits on more than 70 lush acres overlooking the Hudson River. Often considered New York City's sixth borough, Westchester County is perfect for a weekend getaway with your partner. 1. Tibbetts Point Lighthouse (Cape Vincent; Jefferson County)

58-foot tall historic lighthouse located “where the lake and the river meet.” Point of land where the St. Lawrence River joins Lake Ontario. Built in 1854. Gorgeous sunsets.

2. Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie; Dutchess County)

One of Upstate’s greatest man-made wonders. Old train bridge which crosses the Hudson River now turned into the world’s longest pedestrian walkway. Hundreds of thousands walk over the river here each year.

3. Farmers Museum (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

A glimpse of life in Upstate New York in the 1800s. Home of the Cardiff Giant, which was once known as “America’s Greatest Hoax.”

4. Anchor Bar (Buffalo; Erie County)

Birthplace of the No. 1 appetizer in the country, chicken wings. The Buffalo hot wings were invented at this neighborhood bar on March 4, 1964 and since then it has become one of the city’s top destination restaurants.

5. Pratt Rock (Prattsville; Greene County)

A mountaintop canyon with white carvings along the stone walls. All were done by Zadock Pratt who owned the world’s largest tannery in the village named for him. Has been called “New York’s Mount Rushmore.”

6. Corning Tower (Albany; Albany County)

This is the tallest building in New York State outside of New York City. The glass-walled observation deck on the 42nd floor offer visitors an amazing view of the city and mountains in the distance. One of the best free things in Albany.

7. Whiteface Mountain (Wilmington; Essex County)

Take a drive to the top of New York State’s fifth highest mountain. On a clear day you can even see the skyscrapers of downtown Montreal, Canada. The 8-mile Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the top is a toll road.

8. Rod Serling Carousel (Binghamton; Broome County)

Recreation Park is one of Binghamton’s oldest parks. It has a 1925 Herschell carousel which has been enjoyed by visitors since 1925. Playwright Rod Serling, a native of Binghamton, wrote an episode of his famed “Twilight Zone” television show about this park. The episode, titled “Walking Distance,” aired on October 30, 1959.

9. Moosewood Restaurant (Ithaca; Tompkins County)

Popular vegetarian restaurant opened by a group of friends in 1973. Restaurant is very popular with college students, college alumni, locals and tourists. Famed for their cookbooks with more than a dozen in print, they are among the bestselling recipe books in the country.

10. Northeast Classic Car Museum (Norwich; Chenango County)

A dazzling auto museum with one of the largest collections of Franklin cars in the country. Over 160 vehicles with many dating from 1899 to post-World War II.

11. Opus 40 (Saugerties; Ulster County)

Amazing outdoor sculpture park constructed in a quarry. Intricate man-made stairways, passages, and stone walls. Gorgeous bluestone setting. Popular with tourists and as a wedding site.

12. Rondout Area (Kingston; Ulster County)

Kingston was the first capital of New York State. The Rondout is the city’s historic waterfront area. Many fine shops, restaurants, and museums in area.

13. Jell-O Museum (Le Roy; Genesee County)

Le Roy is the birthplace of Jell-O. A Jell-O museum here tells the story of the beginnings of “America’s Favorite Dessert” through exhibits, audio and visual presentations and many examples of rare Jell-O ephemera from the past century.

14. Andes Hotel (Andes; Delaware County)

A historic tavern, inn and motel built in 1853. Great weekend destination in the autumn months. The wide front porch here is a half-block long and is perfect for dinner, drinks and people watching (or leaf peeping).

15. Strong National Museum of Play (Rochester; Monroe County)

A museum dedicated to the concept that play is not only good for all ages, but also is healthy! Home of the National Toy Hall of Fame. Yes, this is where your Etch-A-Sketchs, spinning tops, Candyland games and your little red wagon all came to be immortalized.

16. Lucille Ball Grave (Jamestown; Chautauqua County)

Hometown girl Lucille Ball is buried in Lake View Cemetery here. Thousands come to Lucy’s grave each year to pay their respects. City is home to the National Comedy Museum and a museum dedicated to Lucy and Desi and their groundbreaking show “I Love Lucy.”

17. Ithaca Commons (Ithaca; Tompkins County)

A groundbreaking pedestrian mall in the heart of the downtown business district. All vehicular traffic routed around the commercial district. A popular gathering place for shopping, dining, festivals, concerts and with over 100 independently owned specialty stores and businesses. The Commons today is the cultural and retail heart of the city of Ithaca.

18. 1890 House Museum (Cortland; Cortland County)

One of Upstate’s great old mansions that is open for public tours. Was the former home of millionaire Chester Wickwire. He made his millions producing woven wire products, such as screens, horse muzzles, popcorn poppers, stove sieves, etc. At one time more than half of the adults in Cortland were employed by Wickwire’s company. The mansion is a Victorian-era stunner.

19. Brooks House of Bar-B-Q (Oneonta; Otsego County)

Now in the hands of a third generation of Brooks family members, this is one of New York’s most famous family chicken restaurants. Winner of the James Beard Classic American Restaurant Award. Barbecue chicken is cooked on the largest indoor charcoal fire pit east of the Mississippi (38-feet long).

20. USS Slater (Albany; Albany County)

This ship, docked in the Hudson River in Albany, is a floating military museum unlike any other. Of the 563 Destroyer Escorts that were built and employed during World War II, the Slater is the last surviving one still afloat. Today it is an amazing museum which offers tours of the ship from top to bottom. Most of the docents are retired naval officers who give interesting details about the ship and its crew as you go from the bunk room, to the engine room, to the captain’s dining quarters and even to the gun turrets (the kids like this part the best).

21. Canandaigua City Pier (Canandaigua; Ontario County)

This Finger Lakes community of 10,000 residents acts as a gateway to this popular tourism region of Upstate New York. At the lake front is a long pier which allows the visitor to walk far out over the water and enjoy a spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding shoreline. Near the end of the pier is a famous cluster of gaily colored small boat houses that have become a bit of a charming icon of the city. Rarely do you view the pier and boat houses without seeing artists or photographers capturing this image in paintings and pictures.

22. John Boyd Thacher State Park (Voorheesville; Albany County)

A fantastic state park located 18 miles from the Capital District. The park offers all recreational amenities associated with a state park, with a few exceptions. The view from the park, which is located at the top of the Helderlberg Escarpment, is breathtaking. In the distance you can see the foothills of the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the skyscrapers of Albany’s Empire Plaza. The famed Indian Ladder Trail allows a visitor to descend a 60-foot metal ladder and then walk along a narrow path which clings to the face of a cliff. The path takes you under a waterfall so intrepid visitors are bound to get a little wet.

23. Oldest Miniature Golf Course in U.S.A. (Irondequoit; Monroe County)

This is fun and historic. The oldest operating miniature golf course in the United States. The Parkside Whispering Pines Mini-Golf is a real slice of Americana. The course is decidedly old-fashioned, but fun to play. The theme here is the ocean (or the Great Lakes since the course is a 9-iron drive from Lake Ontario). It is dotted with lighthouses, lobster traps, colorful buoys, and carved pelicans. And American flags. Lots of American flags. Opened in 1930. A 1950s-style diner adjoins the course.

24. Olana (Hudson; Columbia County)

The magnificent estate of famed artist Frederick E. Church. This Moorish-like castle crowns the top of a mountain overlooking the Hudson Valley. Church lived here for years and oversaw the building and expansion of the home. The large windows of the living quarters “frame” the magnificent Hudson paintings that he was famous for. Tours of the mansion as well as the 250-acre grounds are fascinating. Don’t forget to ask your tour guide for the story of the four teapots on the roof!

25. The Wild Center (Tupper Lake; Franklin County)

Since opening in 2006 this has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Adirondack Park. Although basically a natural history education center, the highlight is the Wild Walk. Here, through a series of intricate suspension bridges, pathways and platforms, the visitor can gradually walk up and over the canopy of forests far below, getting a literal bird’s eye view of the scenery.

26. Erie Canal Museum (Syracuse; Onondaga County)

The Erie Canal is one of the great jewels in New York State (and American) history. Called “the greatest engineering marvel of its day,” it is a bit tricky to consume it all in one swoop. Unless you travel the 363 miles of the canal. But the Erie Canal Museum does tell a comprehensive story of this incredible feat and the museum tells it all in a historic building. Its home is in the Weghlock Buildng, the last of several giant buildings which weighed canal boats as they passed through, assessing fees according to the weight. Be sure and get a selfie out front with “The Mule Named Sal,” which honors the engine power of the mules who pulled the canal boats from Albany to Buffalo.

27. Seneca Falls (Seneca County)

One of the most historic communities in Upstate New York. Known as “The Birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement,” many consider any education of the social movement for women’s causes to be incomplete without a visit to this famous village. There are museums, historical markers, famous homes, and impressive statues throughout the village all illustrating the legacy of Seneca Falls. And while visiting, be sure and explore the village’s connection to the famous movie classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” It is a great story!

28. The TePee (Cherry Valley; Otsego County)

At onetime, NYS Rt. 20 was the most important east-west road in Upstate New York. It was dotted with roadside motels, ice cream stands, old-fashioned diners, and busy towns. With the advent of the New York State Thruway (1954) just a few miles north of Rt. 20, the highway became an afterthought and many of the businesses and small towns faced hard times. One iconic souvenir from the past perseveres, however. The TePee was built in 1950 and is still in business today. A fifty-foot-tall metal tepee, the store sells New York State products, Native American gifts and jewelry, clothing, and folk art. Thousands stop by for a touch of nostalgia every year. And across the road is a breathtaking view of the Mohawk Valley.

29. Medina Toy Train Museum (Median; Orleans County)

A fantasy land for all baby boomers who have electric toy trains. This museum has the largest toy train layout in the East. It sprawls over 200 feet long and it 15 feet wide. At any given time, you can see trains of all vintages making their way through miniature settings of cities, farms, wilderness and small towns. This is the place where your toy dreams live on forever.

30. National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

It is hard to fathom the fact that more than a quarter million visitors a year come to Cooperstown, a little village of less than 2,000 residents. The Hall is a mecca for generations of baseball lovers to come and enjoy, learn and pay tribute to the “boys of summer” from their own past. The Hall of Plaques, where only the best are honored, is a place of quiet reflection and reminiscence. This is the state’s greatest sports museum.

31. Corning Museum of Glass (Corning; Steuben County)

Another of Upstate’s world class museums. The city is the home of Corning Glass and the entire city pay homage to the industry and the company in many ways. First and foremost is a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass. The story of the company’s beginning is told in audio and visual exhibits and examples of some of the glass artisan’s most impressive works. Do not miss the glass-blowing demonstration in the little amphitheater. You may be lucky enough to take home a one-of-a-kind “made before your eyes” piece of glass art. The museum also has one of the best museum gift shops in the state.

32. Animal Adventure Park (Harpursville; Broome County)

A wonderful animal park for all ages to enjoy. Youngsters will thrill at the chance to feed any of the 300 varieties of animals on site. The park gained international fame when it live-streamed the birth of a giraffe, Tajiri, in 2017. More than a million people watched it on the park’s YouTube channel.

33. Our Lady of Victory Shrine and Basilica (Lackawanna; Erie County)

One of the most beautiful churches in North America. This enormous cathedral was the inspiration of Father Nelson Baker, known locally as “The Padre of the Poor.” It was built at a cost of $3.2-million dollars and Father Baker served his first mass there on May 25, 1926. The interior of the basilica is a wonder. The stained-glass windows, elaborate altars, Italian marble columns, and remote sanctuaries are exquisite. When Father Baker died, in 1936 at the age of 94, he was buried in the churchyard. Later it was discovered that he may have contributed to miracles taking place and he began his path to sainthood. His remains were moved to an impressive grotto inside the church which was constructed out of black lava rock from Mt. Vesuvius in Italy.

34. United States Military Academy (West Point; Orange County)

Public tours are given at this historic training ground for officers of the U.S. Army. Of special note on these grounds is the West Point Cadet Chapel, which houses the world’s largest chapel organ (23,511 individual pipes). One of the highlights of any tour of the academy is the West Point Cemetery. Here, as you walk along the solemn rows of graves of some of America’s most storied soldiers, you will recognize the names of Maj. General George Goethals (builder of the Panama Canal), General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. who led American troops during Desert Storm, General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and others.

35. Hanford Mills Museum (East Meredith; Delaware County)

One of the last working gristmill and sawmills from the 1800s in the state. Built in 1820, the mill still retains the patina of old-fashioned ingenuity and craftsmanship of a long gone yesteryear. Tours take you into several of the mills’ working buildings to watch handcrafted items being made. A special treat is to observe a giant 1926 Fitz overshot waterwheel come to action powering the entire grounds with water power. As the wheel turns and thousands of gallons of water pour into the wheelhouse from a nearby creek, the display of power can be quite unforgettable.

36. Howe Caverns (Howe Cave; Schoharie County)

New York’s most famous “hole in the ground.” For several generations of young people, a trip “upstate” in the summer meant a stop at this venerable tourist attraction. An elevator takes you 156-feet below the ground, where the temperature is always 56 -degrees. Your tour takes you through amazing displays of rock formations that have been in place for millennia. All are quite beautifully back-lit for dramatic purposes. One of the most popular stops on the underground tour is the Bridal Chapel. Here, on a bright red heart-shaped piece of calcite, more than 600 couples have said “I Do” in an underground ceremony. A boat ride on an underground river is also one of the many fun parts of a visit to Howe Caverns.

37. Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Grave (Hyde Park; Dutchess County)

The magnificent home of our nation’s 32nd president has long been a popular destination in the Hudson Valley. Roosevelt was born at this Hyde Park mansion on January 30, 1892 and was buried here after his death in 1945. Public tours of the home are given. A gift store sells a wide variety of FDR and other presidents’ memorabilia and souvenirs. The final resting place of FDR and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, in the family’s rose garden, is open to the public without taking a tour of the home.

38. Stamford Fire Tower (Stamford; Delaware County)

There are a number of Adirondack and Catskill Mountain fire towers which have been in use for decades, In the Catskills, there is only one fire tower left that is available to drive to by vehicle. Mount Utsayantha, which rises 3,214 feet above the village of Stamford, has a tower and small public park at the summit. The tower is accessible to visitors. The view from the park and the tower, especially in autumn, is one of Upstate’s best.

39. Hyde Hall (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

Brendan Gill, the esteemed architecture critic of The New Yorker magazine has called Hyde Hall, “one of the three or four great buildings of its time.” The mansion was built between 1817 and 1834 for George Clarke, whose grandfather was the governor of colonial New York. The mansion is located at the northern tip of Otsego Lake. Philip Hooker, a prominent American architect designed the home. The neoclassical home is open for public tours. They give an eye-opening glimpse of the glamour of wealthy country life two centuries ago. Your tour will take you through the kitchen, the main dining hall, the bedrooms, courtyards, and private family rooms used by a series of Clarke generations. Plus, you will also see, tucked underneath a curving staircase, the first working flush toilet west of the Hudson River! The view of the lake from the front lawn of the mansion is beautiful.

40. Mark Twain Country (Elmira; Chemung County)

Famed writer and riverboater Mark Twain had a close personal relationship with the Southern Tier city of Elmira. He spent nearly two dozen summers at the home of his wife’s sister in Elmira. Today, the small writing gazebo that he wrote in while there is located on the campus of Elmira College. It is said that the author penned large portions of his adventure books about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in that gazebo. Twain is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, section G. Prominent signs will direct you to his final resting place.

41. Arkville Train (Arkville; Delaware County)

There are several options if you are looking to take a train ride in Upstate New York. You can see the fall leaves in the Adirondacks, go on a Santa’s Polar Express in Western New York, and several others. One of the best is a ride on the Delaware and Ulster Railroad in southern Delaware County. You can ride in the vintage rail cars (both open and closed) and enjoy some of Upstate’s most beautiful scenery as you roll along the tracks following the Upper Delaware River. Rides go through the end of October, but the fall trips book up fast. Also, ask about the “train robbery” excursions. The kids love them!

42. Vidler’s 5&10 (East Aurora; Erie County)

The has been called the “most famous five and dime store in America.” It is also the largest. It covers almost an entire block in this historic Western New York village. Tens of thousands of items pack the shelves with the emphasis on nostalgia. Penny candy anyone? You get the idea. While here don’t forget to look up. Way up. A two-ton statue of octogenarian Ed Vidler, of the store’s founding family, sits with his legs straddling over the roof of the store. Locals love him and call him “Vidler on the Roof.”

43. Saratoga Race Course (Saratoga Springs; Saratoga County)

Even if you are not a horse racing fan, a day at this venerable park is a fun, exciting and (hopefully) a winning experience for you. Known as “The August Place to Be” the track is a major tourist destination in the region during the summer months. A walk around the grounds, the rails, the clubhouse, the horse paddocks and the vending area under the trees gives you a glimpse into why this place ranks among New York’s top attractions. It is one of the oldest sports venues in the country, including all sports. Opened in 1863.

44. Taughannock Falls State Park (Trumansburg; Tompkins County)

Beautiful park just north of Ithaca. The star here is a waterfall, of which Upstate has no shortage of. Taughannock Falls is the centerpiece of this 750-acre park and features a dramatic plunge which plummets 215-feet. That not only makes it the tallest single drop waterfall East of the Rockies, but the waterfall is actually higher than the mighty Niagara Falls (the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara drops “just” 167 feet). Plenty of pathways to explore in the park as well as viewing areas to observe (and photograph) the falls itself.

45. Point Lookout (East Windham; Greene County)

A perennial tourist stop which offers a grand view of five states. From this promontory you can see (on a clear day) the forests and rivers of New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. An inn and “lookout” has been located at this site to cater to tourists with meals and souvenirs for over 75 years ago.

46. World’s Largest Kaleidoscope (Mount Tremper; Ulster County)

The Emerson Resort is one of the most exquisite resorts in the Catskills. But it is not too fancy to offer up an exciting adventure inside an old barn silo. The silo, which is 60-feet tall, has been transformed into a dazzling kaleidoscope. Visitors enter through a bottom door and watch in amazement as hundreds of pieces of crafted colored glass dance across the ceiling to the accompaniment of music and a light show. A unique experience to be sure!

47. Safe Haven Museum (Oswego; Oswego County)

One of New York’s smallest and yet most important museums. Located near the grounds of historic Fort Ontario, the Safe Haven Museum is the last standing building of what was America’s only Jewish refugee center during World War II. The story it tells inside is chilling and inspirational. 982 Jews from war ravaged Europe made a harrowing trip from Italy to Oswego in 1944 where they were housed in a camp as “personal guests of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.” This was the only place in the country where refugees were accepted. The museum features photographs, documents, oral histories, and artifacts from the period.

48. Woodstock Concert Site (Bethel; Sullivan County)

Now known officially as the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, this is perhaps the most famous concert site in the world. Nearly a half-million young people converged on the hallowed field here for the 1969 rock concert that will live for eternity. The concert field, then a dirty mud field, is now a beautifully landscaped rolling lawn. There is a Woodstock monument and a great museum near the top of the hill. Concerts are still held here.

49. Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome (Rhinebeck; Dutchess County)

So much fun here. This is a living museum that offers many old-time airshows using authentic vintage planes. Thousands attend these shows all season long, and marvel as a dozen or more planes take flight and soar overhead. The biggest applause is always saved for the 1909 Bieriot, the oldest flying airplane in the Western Hemisphere, or any of the several vintage biplanes, plus an exact replica of Lucky Lindy’s famous “Spirit of St. Louis.” A great family outing!

50. Susan B. Anthony Grave (Rochester; Monroe County)

Ms. Anthony’s grave is the most visited in this expansive historic cemetery in Rochester. Mt. Hope is the final resting place of 350,000 thousand people, many of them famous. Anthony, the towering figure of the Women’s Rights Movement, is buried in Section C, Lot 93 of the cemetery. Hundreds of women walk to her grave each year during election time to place their “I Voted” stickers on her tombstone in tribute to the woman who fought so long for their right to vote.

Wine and dine in a restaurant and bar built inside a turn-of-the-century Wall Street bank vault commissioned by none other than Andrew Carnegie. Advertised in 1904 as the world's largest and strongest bank vault, Trinity Place is now a place for fine dining and libation befitting Manhattan's Financial District, where modern American cuisine meets Old World splendor.

See No Evil Pizza (Manhattan)

On the concourse level of the 1 train station at 50th Street and Broadway, you’ll find gourmet pizza in an unassuming location. See No Evil Pizza offers an aesthetically appealing environment consisting of a bar and open kitchen that serves up 12-inch varieties of pizza crafted from three-day fermented dough made with artisanal flour from Italy.

Nōksu (Manhattan)

Underneath Koreatown within Manhattan's subway system you’ll find a MICHELIN Star -trained chef operating a high-end seafood and sushi venue. Located in a secret space protected by a key code, each dish is perfectly paired with a cocktail or mocktail, all over a chef’s counter. The menu features a popular and picturesque sunflower-shaped surf clam steamed egg, decorated with crispy potatoes and Kaluga caviar.

Standing 60-feet-tall, what was once a farm silo has been transformed into the Guinness Book of World Records-certified “World’s Largest Kaleidoscope.” Through tapered mirrors, the Kaleidoshow images are transformed into fractal figures and the storytelling begins, accompanied by surround sound and an original score. The current Kaleidoshow is called “The Earth Laughs in Flowers” and pays homage to the colorful, vibrant flower and plant life native to the Emerson Resort & Spa grounds, where the kaleidoscope resides.

Art enthusiasts will be drawn to a tiny church near Sleepy Hollow , known as Union Church of Pocantico Hills. The church contains Henri Matisse's last work, the “Rose Window,” and nine windows by Marc Chagall.

Rock and roll on over to Rochester to check out the “Largest Guitar Store in the World.” The store was started in the 1960’s out of the basement of a family home and quickly gained fame as an intersection of music, art and culture. Rock legends including Aerosmith, Ozzy Osborne, Cheap Trick, Metallica, and Motley Crue are only a few of the major acts who have shopped (or still shop) at the House of Guitars.

444 steps adorn the Million Dollar Staircase in the NYS Capitol building, with 77 famous faces carved throughout. The cost of the staircase was $1.5 million dollars and it took 14 years to complete. The roster or honorees carved into the staircase include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Susan B. Anthony, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and Abraham Lincoln.

Take a one-mile round-trip hike in Orchard Park to one of Greater Niagara’s most picturesque (and Insta-famous) spots. Eternal Flame Falls, found in Chestnut Ridge Park , is a 35-foot rushing waterfall, scenic in its own right, but not-so-hidden in one of its grottos is a small flickering flame about 8 inches high. The cause and continuation of the eternal flame remains a mystery today.

3,140 feet above Woodstock is where you’ll find the Overlook Mountain House ruins. This once grand resort, went up in flames just a few years after it was  constructed in 1871 to service New York City residents looking for a weekend retreat. After being rebuilt, it burned down a second time in the 1920’s. Attempts were made to rebuild (and fireproof) the structure, but finances ran dry and the venue remained partially-complete from the 1940’s through today. Hikers who trek the 4.6-mile out-and-back trail to the top of Overlook Mountain can explore the historic ruins as they summit.

If you’re traveling along the Taconic and think you spot a giant, stone head perched on the hillside… you’re absolutely right. The Taconic Sculpture Park is a 3-acre, 30+ marble and limestone sculpture gallery in the yard of sculptor Roy Kanwit. The park is open seasonally on weekends, but make sure to contact Roy if you are making a special trip. The remarkable 20-foot head seen from the Taconic is called “Mother Earth” named after the Greek Goddess, Gaea, and you can actually climb inside and on top of it (via a staircase) to take in the surrounding scenery.

One of the largest works of art on the continent lives in the quaint town of Saugerties. Opus 40 is a magnificent 6.5-acre environmental bluestone sculpture built from an abandoned quarry. Harvey Fite, the sole creator of this walkable sculpture park, used only hand tools to fit together thousands of stones to form a series of terraces, ramps, and steps, to serve as a showcase for his sculptures. Opus 40 features a calendar full of concerts, film screenings, and festivals, and the surrounding 63 acres of meadows and forested paths frame the sculpture to create stunning scenery.

Widow Jane Mine (Rosendale)

A 19th-century natural cement mine makes a surprisingly ideal performance venue in Rosendale. Widow Jane Mine sits on a 22-acre estate open to the public, and offers a half-mile of mixed surface trails for hiking and dog walking, and is more notably used as a music venue and recording studio. The cavernous room and pillar construction creates a natural amphitheater in the 500 "seat" venue, with amazing acoustics and unobstructed audience views due to the sloping floors. Light filters in from four openings to the outside, and electricity is provided via a generator.

The appropriately named “Just Room Enough Island” is the smallest inhabited Island in the world, and it just so happens to reside right off of Alexandria Bay. The 3,300-square-foot space is home to precisely one cottage, one tree, and a few outdoor lounge chairs. While you need to know the family in order to get an invite onto the island, you can always see it by boat .

Tree of 40 Fruit (Syracuse)

On the campus of Syracuse University you’ll find a very fruitful oddity. The Tree of 40 Fruit’s branches blossom in different shades of pink, white, and crimson, and from there grow a mix of fruit– up to 40 different varieties! Plums, peaches, apricots, nectarines, cherries and more can all be found on the single tree. The tree was brought to life by grafting together different branches from different trees, and it was the brainchild of a sculptor and art professor at the university who wanted to create a piece of natural art that would transform itself.

Howl with excitement when you step into the Wolf Conservation Center. This 26-acre environmental education center in South Salem is home to “ambassador” wolves that are part of its education programs, and critically endangered wolves that are part of a national recovery plan. The nocturnal and fearless can even spend a night Sleeping with Wolves , where guests camp out overnight with the center’s 30+ wolves.

Since 1993, Vanderbilt Tennis Club has been located inside Grand Central Terminal on the 4th floor. This unique club is open to the public and offers a wide range of programs and services both instructional and recreational. 

Frames Bowling Lounge (Manhattan)

Skate Bowl at Art Omi (Ghent)

Museum Muses

You wouldn’t necessarily expect to find a museum inside of a public library, but that just means you haven’t been to Cazenovia Museum & Public Library! Over its 100 years of existence, the Cazenovia Public Library has acquired a number of collections through generous donations. Perhaps the most enthralling exhibit is “Exploring Egypt” which houses a number of authentic Egyption artifacts, including a complete mummy and its case, several masks, breastplates and sandals, ushabtis, scarabs and other objects.

Opulent architecture, stunning waterfront views, and lush grounds complete with a rose garden and reflecting pool are what you’d come to expect from a Vanderbilt home on Long Island’s Gold Coast. At Eagle’s Nest, a sprawling 24-room Spanish Revival mansion that was once the summer home of William K. Vanderbilt II, you’ll find even more. Dive into history at the maritime museum, home to thousands of marine specimens and even a vintage diving suit, and journey through the cosmos at one of the largest and most advanced planetariums in the country.

Wilder Brain Collection (Ithaca)

At its peak, the Wilder Brain Collection in Cornell University comprised up to 1,200 specimens. Now, eight brains sit on display in fluid-filled glass jars, some of which belong to Cornell professors, a suffragist, and Wilder himself (a former Civil War surgeon and one of Cornell’s original faculty members.) Perhaps the most notable brain on display in the collection is that of Edward Rulloff, Ithaca’s infamous 19th-century “genius killer,” whose brain was long believed to be one of the largest ever recorded.

In Fort Tryon Park , you’ll find the only museum in the country dedicated to the art of the Middle Ages. The grounds are made up of Medieval-style gardens, chapels, and various galleries that house the 2,000 works of art- each piece created sometime between the 12th-15th centuries. Marvel at beautiful vistas of the Palisades as you stroll the paths overlooking the Hudson River.

Mmuseumm (Manhattan)

Housed in a  former freight elevator shaft in Tribeca, Mmuseumm explores modern humanity and current events through revealing objects from around the world. This tiny space (6 feet wide, 6 feet deep, 6 feet high) features rotating and permanent collections, specializing in the “overlooked, dismissed, or ignored.” Mmuseumm is open to the public for free on the weekends.

Discover exhibits and displays that tell the story of more than 150 years of grape-growing. The Chautauqua-Allegheny region is the oldest and largest Concord grape-growing region in the world and the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies. At the center you can taste 100% pure Concord grape juice, wines from Lake Erie Wine Countr y, and savor even more grape products.

You’ll find something to write home about on the campus of Elmira College , the current residence of Mark Twain’s study. While summering with his family at Quarry Farm in Elmira, Twain spent his days carefully crafting literary masterpieces including "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and "The Prince and the Pauper" within his octagonal study, built in 1874. Today, Twain and his family rest in peace at the nearby Woodlawn Cemetery .

Lands of Imagination

Go “where no man has gone before” in Ticonderoga and visit a re-created Star Trek set that will transport you into the past while simultaneously propelling you into the future. Star Trek fanatic James Cawley began rebuilding the original set in 1997 after acquiring the original show’s blueprints, and the resulting exhibit draws people from all over the globe to live long and prosper during a set tour .

One of the first theme parks in America, Santa's Workshop in North Pole is an amusement park that features daily scheduled shows, carousels and mini roller coasters, and hosts special events throughout the year. Visitors can wander through its vintage Christmas-themed village and interact with Santa’s helpers in the Candy Shop, real-life reindeer, check out Santa’s Bake Shop, Santa’s Toy Shop, the Blacksmith Shop, and more!

The Mini Route 66 (Speculator)

Take a road trip along Route 66 without moving a mile! In the small village of Speculator, you’ll find a collection of tiny buildings, including a general store, service station, church, schoolhouse, post office, ice cream parlor, and even a barbershop. Each structure is just 98-square-feet and all pay homage to scenery along the great American road trip.

The Ultimate New York Road Trip Itinerary

Ready to plan to best every New York road trip itinerary? Umm, hell yeah you are. Because contrary to popular belief, there is WAY more to New York than just NYC.

Sure, NYC is nice but you kind of owe it to yourself to enjoy EVERYTHING that New York state has to offer.

Because between rolling hills, iconic metropolises, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and lakes that stretch out as far as the eye can see. New York really does have it all. I pinkie promise.

But, if you’re not from New York, it can be difficult (aka stressful) to figure out exactly where to start when planning a trip to the Empire state.

And that’s where I – and my tried and true New York road trip itinerary – come into play. I mean, I want to use my 30+ years of experience of traveling in New York to make your life a whole heck (only pretend I didn’t say heck) of a lot easier.

This way, you can quickly and easily all of the best landmarks in New York.

So, if you’re ready to experience New York like a REAL New Yorker, then onwards my friend as we swan dive into this New York road trip itinerary.

Trust me, it’s filled with TONS of insider tips and tricks to make your life 10,000 times easier. And yes, that is an exact number.

Traveling To New York

Thankfully, traveling to New York for your New York road trip itinerary is pretty dang easy.

After all, New York is home to no less than three major airports – JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia – that are all well connected both domestically and internationally.

Personally, I’d recommend flying into either JFK or LaGuardia since both are closer to NYC than Newark, which is actually in New Jersey.

From here, you can then spend a few days in NYC before starting your New York road trip itinerary.

Personally, I wouldn’t rent a car in NYC just because it can be super expensive.

Instead, I’d spend a few days in NYC, take the train/bus to the Catskills, and THEN rent a car upon arrival.

Now, to get to the Catskills – the first stop in this New York road trip itinerary – from NYC you have a couple of different options. You could:

Take the Train  – Take NJ Transit’s mainline or the Bergen County line from Penn Station and then transfer to Metro-North’s Port Jervis line to Otisville. Once at Otisville, you can use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Take the Bus  – This option is a bit more straightforward. Basically, all you’d need to do is hop on an Adirondack-Pine Hills Trailways/Greyhound bus and take it to the Catskills. Yeah, it really is that easy since they depart from the Port Authority bus terminal in Mid-Town. Once there, you could again use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Pro Tip:  I’d go by bus. It’s easier, only takes about 2.5 hours, and will only cost between $45 and $65 per person. You’ll also get dropped off at the Catskill Park and Ride which is in Catskill, NY, near exit 21 of the New York Thruway.

How to Get Around New York

There is no reason why you should EVER drive in New York City. No really, that is not an exaggeration.

Not only are parking spots hard to come by – with insane, totally different, super complicated parking laws are found on every street block – but traffic is awful and if you park in a garage, well, you’ll pay the equivalent of the GDP of a small(ish) country.

Translation? You’ll pay a lot. Like, $40+ an hour a lot.

So, yeah, never drive in NYC and ALWAYS take the subway. Or bus. But the subway is usually easier since there’s no traffic.

Once outside of NYC though, you’ll 110% need a car. Yeah, sorry but outside of NYC, New York’s public transportation system is notoriously terrible or non-existent.

In either case though, you’ll need a car any time you travel outside of NYC.

So, if you want to start in the Catskills like this New York road trip itinerary suggests, I’d take the bus from Port Authority to the Catskills and then rent a car upon arrival.

Car rental services in Catskill, NY are basically Hertz. Conversely, you could always do a rideshare to Kingston and check out Enterprise, Budget Car Rental, or Sensible Car Rental while you’re there.

Best Time to See Fall Foliage in New York

Honestly, most people typically plan a New York road trip itinerary for the autumn since this is when vibrant foliage typically takes over the New York region.

So, if you’re lookin’ to do a wee bit of leaf peepin’, then consider planning your New York road trip for sometime in October.

Typically, fall foliage is JUST starting to come out in late September and then really takes over the region in October.

And depending on where you are in the state, fall foliage typically peaks in early October in the Adirondacks and around mid-October in the Catskills, which is much further South.

Below you’ll find two different totally amazing New York road trip itineraries that have ten amazing places in total.

Obviously, this is just a suggested NY road trip itinerary and it will vary based on your interests and how much time you have to spend in New York.

So, use this post as a rough guide and to help you plan one of many perfect road trips from NYC for you!

New York Road Trip Itinerary #1 – Headin’ Up North

New york road trip stop 1: catskills.

First stop: the Catskills! And I truly love this region since everyone takes something different away from this vast area of natural beauty.

Will you go get lost in the woods? Or head up to the lake to catch fish for supper? Perhaps you’ll attempt to climb one of the many mountains in Catskills? The possibilities are endless!

Things To Do In The Catskills

Explore Catskill Park  – There are two lakes for water sports, over 120 miles of mountain bike trails, and 8 major hiking routes , including climbs up 5 of the 10 highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains. So, there’s plenty to do for anyone looking to get physical during their New York road trip itinerary!

Take in the view at Kaaterskill Falls  – See this beautiful natural marvel in its full glory, as water drops down over 260 feet at the highest waterfall in New York State! This gorgeous site has captured the hearts and minds of painters and poets for hundreds of years. It also happens to be one of the best waterfalls in New York  State!

What To Eat In The Catskills:

Binnekill Tavern  – If fine dining is yo’ thang, head over to Margaretville and grab yourself some top-level dishes at the Binnekill Tavern. Re-opened in 2018 with a new highly acclaimed chef, this Catskills institution will make you want to come back again and again! I recommend the schnitzel – it’s a local specialty!

Gracie’s Luncheonette  – If you feel the need to chow down on some good ol’ comfort food, but with a southern twist, look no further than Gracie’s Luncheonette in Leeds.

Feel-good food is the top priority here, with all-day breakfasts, fry baskets, hamburgers, and sandwiches aplenty. You might have to roll me on over to the next stop after a meal here!

Where To Stay In The Catskills: 

Mountain Treasure Bed & Breakfast  (Maplecrest)  – The scenery alone makes this place a pleasure to stay in! Add in spacious rooms, cozy furniture, cute fire pits, and an adorable gazebo, and you could convince me that  Mountain Treasure  might have been plucked straight out of a fairytale!

Antique Rose Inn  (Windham)  – With interiors like this, you’ll find it hard to head outdoors.  The Antique Rose Inn  also offers wood-paneled walls, provides personally tailored breakfasts, and has beautiful gardens surrounding Victorian-style architecture.

There’s also a wrap-around terrace that is perfect for sitting and watching the evening sunset with a cup of warm cocoa – or a cool beer, depending on when you stay

New York Road Trip Stop 2: Albany

Time to head further up the highway! Because believe it or not, Albany has a rich history, and it shows in every part of the city.

From the nightlife to the wineries and breweries, to the live performances, to the county fairs, there’s something for everyone who comes to visit. If you are one of those people who love the great outdoors, you can even chase waterfalls near Albany!

Things To Do In Albany

Head to the State Capitol  – Trust me – you can’t miss it! This five-story, hugely ornate building took over thirty years to build. But it looks like it was worth it!

And as the focal point of the Empire State Plaza in Capitol Park, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also be sure to take a tour so that you can explore to the vast interior too!

Albany Institute of History and Art  – Put those thinking caps on, y’all! This is one of the oldest museums in the US, and has over 20,000 different pieces on display, including paintings, sculptures, historical artifacts, and more!

What To Eat In Albany:

Sam’s Italian American  – This family-owned Albany mainstay has been serving customers for four generations. So, if you want to get your Italian pasta fix, Sam’s is the place for you.

The portions are huge, the menu is long, and by the end of your meal, you’ll feel like you just had dinner at your favorite Italian grandma’s house!

Cheesecake Machismo  – Need to satisfy that sweet tooth? Then head over to this epic place on Hamilton Street. it’s a quirky bakery that will ensure that you remember your New York road trip itinerary for years to come! Cherry Amaretto, Bavarian creme, green tea with chocolate…

Whatever you decide on, buy it by the slice or pick up a whole cheesecake for the road!

Where To Stay In Albany

Oakcliff Bed & Breakfast  (Halfmoon)  – Built in the style of Greek revival architecture,  Oakcliff Bed & Breakfast  will make you feel like royalty. Seriously, whether you’re resting your head in a four-poster bed or admiring the grand piano in the lounge, you’ll never not be in the lap of luxury here!

Olde Judge Mansion B&B  (Troy)  – This striking gothic-Victorian style building feels like something out of a game of Clue if the staff weren’t so welcoming and hospitable! Guests will also be treated to ornate furnishings and delicious home-cooked breakfasts. The only question is, will you entertain yourself in the poker room or in the parlor?

New York Road Trip Stop 3: Saratoga Springs

No New York road trip would be complete without a visit to Saratoga Springs. And I’ve talked a lot about it a lot before in my article about  25 amazing things to do in Saratoga Springs, NY !

Because from thrilling horse racing to charming Greek Revival-style homes, Saratoga Springs brings its A-game to anyone who crosses its welcoming borders!

Saratoga Spa State Park  – You could spend your entire stay in Saratoga Springs inside Saratoga Spa State Park and not run out of things to do. I mean, hiking, fishing, swimming, spa treatments (of course), museums, and even golf are just some of the things you can do here. The hikes in Saratoga Springs are mind blowing! There are also tons of food venues so you won’t go hungry either.

Ride the historic carousel in Congress Park  – Take a blast from the entertainment past with this 120-year-old wooden merry-go-round! The original hand-carved animals are still in place, and will take you back to the good ol’ days as you bop up and down in style!

What To Eat In Saratoga Springs

Osteria Danny  – Just around the corner from Congress Park is this delightful Italian restaurant. Fill your belly with such delights as bacon-crusted cod, lobster bolognese, or a wealth of vegan and gluten-free dishes, which are all sure to fortify you during your awesome New York road trip itinerary!

Sushi Thai Garden  – Or if you’re feeling like you want some Asian cuisine, Sushi Thai Garden will be able to provide you with delicious sushi featuring all kinds of seafood, including salmon, crab, tuna, mussels, and octopus.

They also serve a whole host of different Thai curries, with fried rice and noodle dishes available too.

Where To Stay In Saratoga Springs

Adelphi Hotel  (Saratoga Springs)  – Looking for some luxury during your NY road trip itinerary? Well, then this place will blow you away. It features spacious rooms with breathtaking views of the city (make sure you book a room with a balcony!), beautiful furnishings, and top-quality service.

Some say it’s also one of the  most haunted hotels in New York , but don’t let things that go bump in the night spoil your stay!

Ann’s Washington Inn  (Saratoga Springs)  – If you’re in the mood for more of a quiet, peaceful night’s sleep, head on over to Ann’s Washington Inn. This delightful guest house comes with lush gardens and terraces on which to sit, have a drink and relax.

It’s no wonder plenty of couples decide to host their weddings here – it’s a place where you’re guaranteed to have a good time (and a comfy bed afterward)!

New York Road Trip Stop 4: Lake George

It’s time for a tan! Or in my case, a mild change in my pasty white, white complexion! And the one place I like to pretend to tan is Million Dollar Beach.

But, this beautiful natural oasis is just one of the many things that attract road trippers to Lake George every year. And there’s no reason for you to miss out either.

Because this top NY road trip destination is more than just a big body of water – there’s historical forts, rail bikes, a huge amusement park, need I say more?

Things To Do In Lake George

Take an authentic steamboat cruise on Lake George  – Get out on that water, yo! After all, this town is named after the lake for a reason, and you should definitely head onto one of their local steamboats – especially the Minne Ha Ha Paddlewheel! – to enjoy one of the oldest pastimes in the USA.

House of Frankenstein Wax Museum  – Wax figures? Check. Movie monsters? Double-check. The ultimate creepiness collection? Check check and CHECK! If you’re after some scares during your ultimate New York road trip itinerary, this house of horrors will definitely scratch that itch. Be warned: not all of the wax statues stay still ….

What to eat in Lake George

The Garrison Restaurant and Bar  – For great food and great company, head to the Garrison, just around the corner from Million Dollar Beach. This all-American bar and grill boasts live music, patio seating, and a huge menu full of satisfying pub grub. Plus, there’s plenty of craft beers on tap!

The Boathouse Restaurant  – For the best in waterfront dining that Lake George has to offer, this former boathouse (who would have guessed?) provides high-stacked burgers, tasty steaks, the freshest seafood, and a whole host of other dishes that will kick your New York road trip up an extra notch!

Where To Stay In Lake George

Inn on the Hill  (Lake George)  – This place has everything you could want from a comfortable night’s stay, with modern furnishings and the added bonus of an outdoor pool.  Umm, hi. Sign me up, please! Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw from Lake George itself, meaning you can head straight out onto the water easily.

The Inn at Erlowest  (Lake George) –  I’ll admit it, this place comes with a hefty price tag. But when you want luxury, this is the place to measure it by. This beautiful stone building comes with HUGE rooms, some even with a fireplace or a jacuzzi, and excellent views of the lake, so your breakfast scenery will be second to none

New York Road Trip Stop 5: Lake Placid

It’s now on to our final stop of our first New York road trip itinerary – Lake Placid, a jewel among the Adirondack Mountains and home to one of the  best lakes in New York . .

If you’re venturing out on the ultimate road trip from NYC in the winter, this will be the perfect place to finish, because Lake Placid is a snow sports paradise!

But what if I’m on a NY road trip in summer? Oh well, I guess you’ll just have to settle for the natural beauty of sunlight pouring through green trees and shimmering off the cool, clear lake water. Sigh, it’s a hard life!

Things To Do In Lake Placid

Zip through the trees at Experience Outdoors  – What better way to view nature than by speeding over it at top speed? JK y’all, this isn’t you’re usual outdoor adventure! But just south of the main town of Lake Placid, make sure you stop by this family-friendly thrill ride.

Because in addition to epic zip lines, there’s also an adventure park full of challenging obstacles all set up in the Adirondack Mountain forests! You can see why this is one of the popular things to do in Lake Placid.

Shoot across Mirror Lake in a Toboggan  – Prepare for the longest slide of your life as you rocket down this 30-foot tall structure straight onto Mirror Lake! Although only available in winter, this is one of the most unique things to do in Lake Placid , with some sledders managing to slide over 1,000 feet across the ice!

What To Eat In Lake Placid:

Delta Blue  – Classic Lake Placid decor meets sumptuous Southern cuisine in this wood-paneled establishment complete with tree branches lining the ceiling. On the right day, you can even catch a live blues night while you enjoy your barbecue ribs!

Mis Amigos  – Sometimes you just want a burrito, amirite? Or, tacos, nachos, enchiladas, and the ocassional chimichanga. Well,  Mis Amigos deffo has got what you want with dishes that are bursting with flavor! If the weather is good, make sure to get a seat by the fire pit outside on the patio so that you can embrace Lake Placid’s sweet, small-town ambiance.

Where To Stay In Lake Placid:

Maple Leaf Inn  (Lake Placid)  –  Maple Leaf Inn  sits between Mirror Lake and Paradox Bay, within easy walking distance of both lakes. This quaint budget option will have you ready and refreshed for the day’s activities, and is perfectly positioned for anyone wanting to head up to Whiteface Mountain!

Cobble Mountain Lodge  (Lake Placid)  – When you think “mountain lodge”, this is what will appear in your head. Warm and comfortable rooms, with wooden furnishings and wood-paneled walls, this place just screams cozy!

New York Road Trip Stop 6: Montreal

If you’ve driven this far north, why not go a little bit further and add another country to the mix? I mean Canada is just right across the border and Montreal looks so tempting right? Montreal is one of those places that I have been to more times than I can count because it is such a beautiful city and it is so accessible. Probably why I’m a bit biased when it comes to visiting it.

Things To Do In Montreal

Explore The Gorgeous Sandy Beaches – Montreal has some great beaches where you can enjoy the sand and the sun. If you are visiting in summer that is. If it’s winter, you can still enjoy the sand but it would be a bit too cold to enjoy the water. Nevertheless, it still a great spot to come to enjoy the view!

Go For A Hike – Montreal is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoors. There are amazing park trails for people at all levels of hiking experience and endurance. It is a great way to unwind.

Some of the popular parks are Parc Jean-Drapeau, Mount Royal, Lachine Canal and Champ des Possibles. These parks are just one of those benefits for the lucky ones living in Canada.

What To Eat In Montreal

Foiegwa – Head to Foiegwa for one of the best brunches in Montreal . This elegant diner was actually crafted out of an abandoned space. It is currently known for its gourmet regional cuisine and yes as I mentioned its brunch!

If you visit Foiegwa make sure to try out the waffles and the chicken. Doesn’t sound gourmet? Trust me, you will be surprised!

La Cave A Manger – You may have left NYC way behind but Montreal can offer you one of the most iconic dishes from your fav city. Try the Lafayette Supreme croissant at La Cave A Manger. This is a cream filled delicacy with multiple circular croissant layers. Have I convinced you yet? You seriously have to try it because it will have you craving for more than just one!

Where To Stay In Montreal

Best Western Plus Hotel – The Best Western is a popular hotel chain and with good reason. The hotel has modern rooms which are clean and pretty large. It comes with all the amenities that you could need for a night out in the town. Plus it is very conveniently located in the downtown area.

Hotel Bonaventure Montreal – This is another pretty great hotel to stay at and it has some raving reviews. Not only is Hotel Bonaventure in the heart of the downtown activity, it even has a fitness center that guests can use for free. The 2.5 acres of manicured gardens is also a big draw, as is the rooftop pool and terrace.

Bonus Stop For The Winter Lovers: White face mountain

Whiteface mountain is so close to Lake Placid that you don’t really need to have two bases to visit it. The location however does beg to be mentioned especially if it’s winter but it really doesn’t matter which time of the year you head there. There is always something to do. If you don’t want to be ultra adventurous, there are so many options where you can just kick back and enjoy the view!

Did I mention that there quite a few cool romantic winter getaways here too?

Things To Do In White Face Mountain:

Skiing:  Did you know that the White face mountain is one of the highest in the country? During winter the slopes get coated white and it is a great spot to test your skills whether on a snowboard or on skis!

Hill falls gorge:  It is a privately owned nature park but everyone really raves about how there are trails and activities for all ages. Plus the views are spectacular and it is rather peaceful. Such a break from the noisy streets of the city, if you get what I mean!

Santa’s workshop:  A quirky theme park that has stood the test of ages! It is perfect for families with kids and a fun stop along the way. Don’t expect a huge amusement park with rides though. Here the kids can catch a bit of the Christmas magic and so can you. I know I loved it. Bonus points because I got to feed the reindeer which was so much fun!

Where To Stay In White Face Mountain

Hungry Trout Resort:  It is perfect if you want to stay close to the ski lifts and get as much out of the slopes as you can. 

Sara Placid Inn:  Located in Lake Placid, this a warm tranquil place to stay. It allows you to access the slopes and yet have the quite laid back life near the lake.

New York Road Trip Itinerary #2: Way Out West

It’s wine o’clock, baby! Because wine and craft beer are the names of the game in Ithaca. Just get me a bespoke beverage, y’all!

So, as you head west into the Finger Lakes region – aka the number 1 wine region in the USA (oh yeah!) – Ithaca will be your first port of call.

As you pass vineyards full of delicious grapes just waiting to be picked, keep an eye out for the many waterfalls you’ll be passing along the way.

With excellent wine and so much gorgeous scenery, this will be the perfect place to start the best New York road trip itinerary ever! Aside from wine, there are also loads of things to do in Ithaca that draw people here year after year.

Things To Do In Ithaca

Head to Taughannock Falls State Park  – The biggest and most impressive of Ithaca’s 150 waterfalls (OMG is there a place where water ISN’T falling around here?!), the Tuh-GA-nick Falls waterfall, as it’s known locally, is 215 feet tall. And the rest of the state park isn’t too shabby either! There are hiking trails , swimming in Cayuga Lake, camping grounds, playgrounds, picnic areas, and more.

Get your art on in Downtown Ithaca  – Walking around Downtown Ithaca is like walking around an art gallery, except that you’re outside on the streets! There are statues and murals everywhere, many by local artists. It’s easy to see why this place has a reputation for its artistic diversity! Heck, even the restaurants and the nightlife are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else!

What To Eat In Ithaca

Moosewood  – Get yourself some all-natural cuisine at Moosewood Restaurant! Dishes here are made with whole grains, nuts, beans, and seeds, and mixed with the freshest vegetables and spices, for the most organic meal imaginable. You’ll probably feel healthier just by reading the menu!

Agava  – Over in east Ithaca, Agava offers the best in Southwest-inspired vegetarian and vegan cuisine with its amazing selection of farm-to-table style dishes. Just choose between traditional entrees or tapas-style small plates, making it great for groups of friends and families alike. Get sharing, yo!

William Henry Miller Inn  (Ithaca)  – This cozy bed and breakfast is right in the Downtown area of Ithaca, and treats guests to historic ambiance while also providing all the modern-day comforts you could want. And if you’re after handmade desserts before bed following a day of fun in the city, then this is the place for you!

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott  (Ithaca ) – This hotel sits right by the Buttermilk Falls State Park, with Cayuga Lake just a 5-minute drive away. The rooms are also neat and spacious, with a pool and a fitness center on-site. That’s why, this is a great place to stop, drop and recharge.

New York Road Trip Stop 2: Watkins Glen

It’s time to jump from one Finger Lake to the next. Because Watkins Glen is less than an hour from Ithaca and sits on an entirely different – but totally picturesque – body of water that is known as Seneca Lake .

Therefore, it’s the perfect spot to go for a hike, cruise out on the lake, or sample some delicious wine from one of the many Seneca Lake vineyards that can be found in this quaint little New York town.

Hike the Gorge Trail  – This hour and a half long trail through Watkins Glen State Park is one of the  best hikes in upstate New York ! Start at the Sentry Bridge, walk around behind the Cavern Cascade waterfall, cross the suspension bridge, marvel at the Rainbow Falls plunge pools, and head onwards towards Jacob’s Ladder. It’s an awesome adventure!

Get your pick of the bunch at the Farmers Market  – Throughout the summer and fall seasons, you won’t find a better selection of fresh produce, meats, crafts, and toiletries than at the Watkins Glen Farmers Market in Lafayette Park. See the community of Watkins Glen at its best here, and grab yourself a bargain!

What To Eat In Watkins Glen:

Seneca Harbor Station  – Here you’ll find meals that’ll fill you up, all year round. During the summer, it’s seafood, steak, and sandwiches. But throughout the winter, the menu changes to hearty chowders that will keep you warm and happy on the inside for a long time!

Blue Pointe Grille  – If you’re after breakfast then the Blue Pointe Grille at the Harbor Hotel is an excellent choice. Order yourself a Finger Lakes omelet and follow it up with some pancakes and waffles. You might even want some oatmeal, yogurt, and perhaps even a muffin. Regardless of what you choose tough, the food here is guaranteed to leave you feeling ready to start your day!

Where To Stay In Watkins Glen

Budget Inn  (Watkins Glen)  – Cheap an’ cheerful, as they say in jolly old England! But don’t worry, the service is 100% American-style hospitality. The location is great too since this hotel sits in between the Six Nations Campground and the Catharine Creek Wildlife Management Area, which means that you’re downtown!

Lakeside Resort  (Watkins Glen) –  The Lakeside Resort  is exactly what it sounds like! So, enjoy 30 acres of walking trails, waterfalls, and garden areas, plus plenty of space for hanging out on the terrace and having a barbecue. You’ll be living the cabin life to the max here during your New York road trip itinerary!

New York Road Trip Stop 3: Rochester

Time to head north! And Rochester makes for an epic, intellectual stop on your New York road trip itinerary.

Especially since there are museums aplenty up here by Lake Ontario, covering everything from science to gamesto art, and even photography.

Plus, there’s the Seneca Park Zoo, which has been open and running for over 120 years!

Things To Do In Rochester

It’s game time at The Strong National Museum of Play  – What’s that? An entire museum dedicated to games, toys, and entertainment? Hold my beer! Because it’s not just kids that will enjoy this museum (although this place is totally family-friendly!).

I mean, there are over 30,000 consoles and games in the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, and it’s home to New York’s only indoor butterfly garden!

Browse through paintings at Artisan Works  – This not-for-profit gallery showcases community artwork that has been created by the local people of Rochester. So, marvel at the artistic creative process in action as artists work to create imaginative new pieces while you visit. There are also guided tours of the facility available for all age groups too!

What To Eat In Rochester

Voula’s Greek Sweets  – Vegan and vegetarian Greek food never looked and tasted so good. And you don’t hear me saying that very often! Whether it’s brunch, lunch, dinner or just some pastries to go, everything here is delicious, and almost all of it is gluten-free or has the option of being gluten-free. Yup, go, go Greek food!

Nick Tahou Hots  – For something uniquely Rochester, head to Nick Tahou Hots and order yourself a “garbage plate”. This local dish, invented at Nick Tahou Hots, includes your choice of protein (steak, chicken, hamburger etc) served on top of a combination of home fries, baked beans, and macaroni salad, topped with a spicy meat sauce.

Where To Stay In Rochester:

Hampton Inn Rochester  (Irondequoit)  – This is a modern hotel features plenty of amenities like an indoor heated pool and gym, as well as a daily breakfast with plenty of tea and coffee. Yup, sure sounds good to me! The rooms are also nice and big and well maintained. Hip hip hooray!

School 31 Lofts  (Rochester)  – Right in the middle of the Neighbourhood of the Arts, this modern hotel comes with some impressive furnishings mixed in with some very artistic designs, which is appropriate! You can totally tell this used to be a school, but this is a much better use of the building if you ask me. I’ll take comfort over homework any day!

New York Road Trip Stop 4: Buffalo

Time to head further west to Buffalo, New York’s second-largest city.

As you can imagine, with great size comes a great amount of things to see and do! So, when you visit, expect to find nature preserves, botanical gardens, museums, a thriving nightlife scene, and plenty of activities down by the harbor.

Because it’s all happening here, at least if you embark on one of the best road trips from NYC!

Things to do in Buffalo

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens  – These amazingly beautiful gardens were designed by the same guy who developed Central Park back in New York, New York! Not only are they a visual spectacle to behold, but they also act as a center for research and education. They’re dual-purpose, y’all!

And the centerpiece of it all is a tri-domed conservatory that is made from wood, steel, and glass, which houses tropical plants and looks Insta-mazing at sunset!

Definitely take some time to go on the Garden Walk, which is known for being America’s largest garden tour. And if you want to be the first one through the door, they also offer an early access activity where you get to help feed the koi fish who live in the ponds here!

Explore Outer Harbor  – This quiet area is home to over 200 acres of green spaces, with plenty of bike paths and walking trails for you to enjoy. There are also plenty of places here where you can rent out kayaks and head onto the waters of Lake Erie. You even have the option of renting water bikes, so you can cycle across the lake. It’s fun and a bit surreal, all at the same time!

Plus, If you head north into Buffalo Lighthouse Park, you can see the towering figure of Buffalo Main Light right at the edge of the water.

What To Eat In Buffalo

Sinatra’s  – Time for some fine dining during your New York road trip itinerary! And this family-owned Buffalo institution fits the bill since they’ve been in operation for over forty years.

They also serve up some of the best Italian Old Country flavors with a bit of modern flair. Soups, salads and antipasti will lead into pasta and specialties like Osso Bucco. With a bottle of wine (or two – who’s counting?) to accompany the proceedings, you and your NY road trip friends will feel like royalty!

Black & Blue Steak and Crab  – Seafood, seafood, seafood, and – oh yeah – more seafood. After all, this is a harbor city, that is known for it’s fresh catch of the day and stunning scenery.

So, for the best seafood the city has to offer, head to Black & Blue for tasty oysters, red snapper, lobster, scallops, shrimp, and, of course, crab. There’s plenty of fish alternatives on offer too if seafood ain’t your jam, including all manor of steaks and sides to go with them!

New York Road Trip Stop 5: Niagara Falls

“It’s the end of the world and we know it”, and by world, I mean road. Because yes my friend, this is the final stop on our New York road trip itinerary!

And I dunno about you but I personally think it’s important to end with a big finish, and they don’t come much bigger than this!

Because Niagara Falls is famous for being home to one of the world’s most amazing and beautiful natural waterfalls. One of those things that makes you proud to be a New Yorker!

Fortunately, there’s way more to this corner of New York state than just impressive (VERY impressive!) water features.  But, I alos understand if you just want to spend most of your time at the falls.

Things To do In Niagara Falls

Uh … visit Niagara Falls?  – I mean, how are you not gonna see it? You have to, really, it’s SUPER famous! Although, you really do have to see Niagara Falls with your own eyes to appreciate the full power of its beauty. I have a whole Niagara falls itinerary that guarantees you make the best out of your trip!

First, head over to Niagara Falls State Park to begin your journey, and then head up to Prospect Point to take that all-important selfie. Gotta make those waterfalls more beautiful, amirite? Don’t forget to match those amazing pics with the right Niagara falls captions.

If you want, you can even take a ride aboard the Maid of the Mist to see the base of the Falls and refresh yourself in the cascading mists! Just make sure that you pack everything you need for Niagara falls .

What To Eat In Niagara Falls

Zaika Indian Cuisine & Bar  – For a vegetarian-friendly taste of India, this restaurant creates dishes taken from royal Indian menus dating back hundreds of years.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.
