OCEAN SPRAY CRUISE REVIEWS

Cruise rating: 4.7 /5 - 4 customer reviews

Veronica, Our apologies for you having to ask, for we had intended to send message immediately upon our return. We could not say enough positive things about the trip. Our experience on the Ocean Spray and at La Selva were fantastic!! The quality of the boat and the lodge, the food and, most importantly, the people were beyond expectation. We made new friends and 'family' at both. In Quito, we loved the hotels and the restaurants (Nuema, Urko, Zazu, Gangotena). As for GTC, we were extremely impressed with the level of service, warmth and concern delivered by all involved from your attention to detail and responsiveness to the service provided by the greeter and drivers. We recommended you to several people we met on the trip and will definitely recommend you as opportunities arise in the future. Our only regret was that we didn't plan more time for travel to others areas within Ecuador. We will be doing very positive postings on TripAdvisor for GTC and for all things at both areas visited. With all best regards Grant Godwin April 2015 4.7
Veronica , Wow what a trip !!!!! The Ocean Spray was a beautiful new comfortable boat great service, great food the tourists were from all over the world and we all enjoyed our trip of a lifetime, other then my safari in Kenya this was my best trip ever, primarily because I swam with sea turtles, dolphins, sting ray, sea lions and penguins thanks for all I saw your office in New Town Quito and I will happily refer you any interest tourists Nancy Noel October 2012 4.7
Dear Lilian, My friend and I are back in Australia now after a wonderful trip to Peru and the Galapagos Islands. Thank you very much for organizing all of this for us, flights, hotels and the Ocean Spray were a big success and everything went off as planned. We were picked up and helped all along the way. I am happy to pass on glorious reports about you and your company and I am happy to get back onto Trip Advisor to recommend you and your company to anyone travelling to the Galapagos. Many thanks and best wishes to you. Judy Bartnicki and Margaret Fricker June 2012 4.7
Hello Magus! Our holiday was excellent, thank you. Everything was very well organized - our taxi collections were prompt, staff excellent, loved Ocean Spray and the itinerary. Only thing I can think of, is that perhaps a bit more could have been arranged in the evening on the boat - perhaps cocktails one evening, films available, board games / cards etc. I would certainly recommend the Galapagos and your website. Thank you very much for all your help. Kind regards Helen Louise Randall April 2012 4.7

Ocean Spray Single Cabin

Ocean Spray Itineraries explained

Onboard this luxurious catamaran, you will have six itineraries to choose from:

Ocean Spray 4-day B Itinerary

The  4-day B itinerary  visits San Cristobal island with its surrounding highlights which include:

  • Kicker Rock: Great landscapes and better snorkeling
  • Pitt Point: Beautiful trek and a chance to spot all 3 types of boobies
  • Witch Hill: Pristine beach with tons of wildlife and a chance to kayak

You will also visit Floreana Island which is one of my favorite islands in the Galapagos. Here you get to learn a bit about Galapagos History and you will go snorkeling at the Devil´s Crown – the best snorkeling site in the Galapagos Islands.

The best snorkeling site in the Galapagos Islands

Ocean Spray 5-day B Itinerary

The  5-day B itinerary  will take you on a tour of the NorthCentral Islands. On this itinerary, you will make a stop at Bartholomew island, here you can catch the perfect view of Pinnacle Rock, and take the quintessential picture of the Galapagos Islands. You will also make your way to Genovesa Island (aka ¨bird island¨) for a fantastic short Galapagos cruise experience.

Ocean Spray 6-day A&B Itineraries

The 6-day A itinerary is a shorter version of the week-long A itinerary, its a good option for travelers that want to visit the Western Islands of the Galapagos archipelago but don’t have a full week to spare. The 6-day B itinerary is a longer version of the 4-day B itinerary which adds Española island. I’ve always thought that 4 and 5 day itineraries were too short and 8-day itineraries a bit too long, so having two 6-day options is great IMHO.

Ocean Spray 8-day B Itinerary

The  8- day B itinerary  combines both the 4 and 5-day itineraries into one week-long itinerary visiting plenty of Galapagos highlights.

Ocean Spray 8-day A Itinerary

The  8- day A itinerary  visits the sought after Western Islands in style! You get to visit Isabela and Fernandina islands, where you will find abundant wildlife and a guaranteed superb experience. On top of all this, you finish your Galapagos journey with a visit to Española island where you get to swim with sea lions and if you are lucky you will get a chance to watch the albatross taking off a cliff…truly magnificent!

Connoisseur Tip:

After analyzing all six itineraries aboard the Ocean Spray, I can easily say that the very best itinerary they have is the week-long A itinerary. I have not seen any other itinerary that includes the Western Islands of Isabela and Fernandina, but still provides a visit to the other Galapagos icon – Española Island. Highly recommended!

If you don’t have a week to spend in the Galapagos, a 6-day itinerary will provide a great and complete experience in the archipelago.

Come aboard and feel the Galapagos Ocean Spray, truly an unparalleled experience!

Thanks to a partially-covered sundeck, extended balconies, panoramic windows, and natural-light-infused staterooms, it is impossible to distinguish where nature ends and luxury begins. At 124 feet long and 46 feet wide, the Ocean Spray offers every guest ample space to relax in comfort.

Couples will love the comfortable king-sized beds, while families will appreciate the option of two twin-sized beds and adjoining rooms. Between excursions, grab a drink in the cozy bar, soak in the whirlpool, or nap on a daybed. At the end of the day, unwind in a frosted-glass shower while pampering yourself with premium biodegradable amenities before snuggling into deluxe bed linens.

Excursions from your Ocean Spray Cruise

The Ocean Spray sails a wide range of itineraries, ranging from three to seven nights, making this an ideal ship for travelers looking to indulge in a full week in the Galapagos and those who wish to combine a quick cruise with a resort stay. The ship’s top-rated Naturist Guides pride themselves on helping guests experience the most remote islands and visitor points with all the information they need to enrich their voyage.

Hop off the boat at Santa Fe Island, the planet’s single spot to see pink land iguanas. Depending on the itinerary selected, you will explore lava tubes on Santa Cruz Island, visit a Palo Santo forest on Genovesa Island where red-footed boobies nest, and snorkel with turtles and rays at Devil’s Crown on Floreana Island. Along the way, you will hike, kayak, paddleboard, and take dinghy rides during two excursions each day. No matter the itinerary or island, surprise encounters with wildlife, including flamingoes, penguins, white-tipped sharks, and sea lions, await.

Designed for Wildlife Observation

Wildlife lovers flock to the Galapagos Islands in search of a vast array of native and endemic species that call the archipelago home, including the Galapagos Giant Tortoise, marine iguanas, and Flightless cormorants. The Ocean Spray yacht puts little between you and the area’s animal residents. Stateroom balconies with sliding panoramic doors provide quiet, personal spaces to spot birds and marine animals.

To share the experience with friends, family, and fellow sailors, head to the Sky Deck, where you can keep an eye on the skies from both sunny and shaded areas. No matter what species you spy, be sure to ask about them during educational discussions in the briefing lounge.

From breakfast, lunch and dinners served on either the Sundeck or indoor dining area, to the library filled with materials on the islands and Ecuador, the Ocean Spray offers everything you could wish for to make the most of your moment in the Galapagos.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

4 Day - Eastern, Southern & Central Islands

itinerary map

Embarkation

AM : Upon arrival, reception and assistance at the airport, transfer from San Cristobal Airport to the M/C Ocean Spray.

PM : Lobos Island is aptly named after the many sea lions that reside here resting and playing along the rocky shores. It is also home to many different birds like pelicans, frigate birds and their nests, yellow warblers, and more. Within the small channel, the waters are very clear, making it easy to find sea turtles, sea lions, stingrays, and perhaps even white-tipped sharks.

Kicker Rock is one of the most extraordinary sites in the Galapagos Islands, made of two eroded volcanic cones that tower over the sea at about 104 meters in the middle of the open water. It is a nesting place of sea birds and a nice spot to take pictures while the vessels circumnavigate around the rock.

Ocean Spray's 4-Day Itinerary 'B' Day One - Galapagos Pelican.

Pitt Point & Witch Hill

AM : When arriving at Pitt Point, it will feel as if you’ve landed on an extraterrestrial planet. You can see the many different developments over time of how volcanic activity formed this island. A hike up to the top beholds amazing views of the surrounding waters. Watch out for blue-footed boobie nests on the ground and keep an eye out for the red-footed boobies nesting in the trees once you reach the top of the island.

PM : Witch hill has awesome crevices and eroding rocks along the shoreline where you will first pass in the panga. Afterward, be prepared to visit a powdery white sand beach with teal and turquoise waters.

Ocean Spray's 4-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Two - Blue-Footed Booby.

Post Office Bay & Cormorant Point/Devil’s Crown

AM : Ask the Cruise Manager for one of our complimentary postcards to write a message and address it home. Leave it in the barrel used before by pirates and sailors. While your there, see if there are any other postcards you can take home with you to send to fellow travelers who have already left their messages!

PM : Cormorant is an interesting visitor site. Two beaches can be visited here, just beyond the first beach is a saltwater lagoon with flamingos. One of the beaches look green because of the olivine crystals, and the other is appropriately called Flour Beach because of the powdery white sand, made from the fine, pulverized coral. Watch your feet if wading in the water, stingrays love to hang out here as well.

Devil’s Crown boasts one of the finest snorkeling opportunities. Below the surface are amazing volcanic structures that have submerged over time. Hundreds of colorful fish species can be seen along the reef, along with sharks, rays, sea turtles, sea lions, and rays. It’s a beautiful underwater spectacle that cannot be missed.

Ocean Spray's 4-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Three - Post Office Bay.

Disembarkation

AM:  Black Turtle Cove is located on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. This shallow inlet is surrounded by mangroves and provides natural protection for a variety of marine life, attracting the vulnerable juveniles of many species. Below the surface of the water, you can see both black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, golden cow-nose rays, and spotted eagle rays. Pelicans and blue-footed boobies hunt here, diving gracefully into the water.

After this last visit, transfer to Baltra airport for your return flight to mainland Ecuador. Assistance and farewell at the airport.

Ocean Spray's 4-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Four - Santa Cruz Island.

5 Day - Central & Northern Islands

itinerary map

AM:  Upon arrival, reception, and assistance at the airport, transfer from Baltra Airport to the M/C Ocean Spray.

PM:  Pinnacle Rock is a volcanic cone formed by magma expelled by an underwater volcano. The sea cooled the hot lava and as it exploded from contact, the pieces formed together this huge rock of many, many layers of basalt. The huge rock also has a beach where a small population of green sea turtles will nest during the breeding season. Galapagos penguins gather here and swimming can offer beautiful sights of colorful schools of fish and curious sea lions.

Ocean Spray's 5-Day Itinerary 'B' Day One - Galapagos Penguin.

Darwin Bay & El Barranco

AM : Darwin Bay used to be a shield volcano, now you can see where one of the sides of its caldera collapsed after hundreds of years of erosion.  It is known for the wide variety of birds that can be seen. Over 20,000 red-footed boobies are estimated to call this island home within the trees and bushes of Genovesa Island.

PM : In English, El Barranco is also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps.  It leads to a rocky path up a cliff that rewards guests with a remarkable view.  It is also home to a Palo Santo forest that is home to the nesting red-footed boobies and other shorebirds.

Ocean Spray's 5-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Two - Prince Phillips' Steps.

Espumilla Beach/Buccaneer Cove & Egas Port

AM:  As the second Island Charles Darwin discovered, it was originally named after King James of England. Buccaneer Cove is an excellent opportunity for snorkeling and was once a refuge for passing sailors and pirates. The underwater formations provide an amazing home for the many different tropical species of fish that can be found here.

PM:  Egas port is also known as James Bay, home to quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. There are grottos and tide pools housing all kinds of different marine species. This is also one of the best snorkeling sites in the Galapagos.

Ocean Spray's 5-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Three - Galapagos Lava Lizard.

North Seymour Island & Santa Cruz Highlands

AM:  The island was named after English nobleman Lord Hugh Seymour. Formed by uplifted submarine lava, the island is home to a huge colony of about 2,500 land iguanas and large populations of sea lions, blue-footed boobies, common noddies, and frigatebirds. Along the coast, it is possible to see land and marine iguanas and the biggest colony of Magnificent Frigatebirds.

PM:  The Highlands of Santa Cruz is a very interesting site due to the rich wildlife, hills, ferns, volcanoes, and lava tubes present. Exploring the lava tubes is a surreal and unique experience. Here you can see all the different agricultural zones that are present in the Galapagos in one place. The variety of birds makes this a bird watcher's delight.

Ocean Spray's 5-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Four - Frigate Bird.

AM:  This visitor site is located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour. It is a reef of rocks and coral (the result of an uprising) and a great white sand beach. Its narrowest width reaches about 160 meters and has an estimated length of 600 meters. In most of the perimeter, there is a base of lava rocks, as evidence of the lava uprising, except in the southwest side where the landing occurs. This island has one of the largest populations of sea lions. You can also observe several species of shorebirds. There have been occasional reports at this site of Orcas feeding on sea lions.

After this last visit, transfer to Baltra airport for your return flight to mainland Ecuador. Assistance and farewell at the airport.

Ocean Spray's 5-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Five - Mosquera Islet.

6 Day - Central & Western Islands

itinerary map

PM:  This site offers rare, up-close viewing of Galapagos wildlife and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock that can't be found in such a unique condition anywhere else. The island is named after the similarity of an Asian type of hat. Here you can see American Oystercatchers and Galapagos Penguins swimming along the shores.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day One - Chinese Hat.

Vicente Roca Point & Espinosa Point

AM:  Vicente Roca Point has outstanding geological formations and is a great place to see various bird species. Because this visitor site is located on the western area of the island, the Cromwell Current provides cold water that carries many nutrients for both land and aquatic species, offering the chance to see amazing feeding frenzies.

PM:  As one of the most pristine islands in the archipelago, Fernandina has never had a foreign species invade. It is also the most active island and farthest west. Espinosa Point is the only visitor site on the entire island. Here you can see marine iguanas, Galapagos hawks and enjoy a hike and/or snorkeling activity at one of the most natural, unspoiled sites in the entire world.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day Two - Galapagos Hawk.

Tagus Cove & Urbina Bay

AM:  If you like historic remnants, then you will enjoy finding what was left behind by pirates and sailors in the 1800s. This site was one of their preferred pit stops while traveling the seas. The hike here will provide incredible views of the cove and on the other side the mangrove forest where the last 35 pairs of Mangrove finches thrive.

PM:  Millions of years ago, Urbina Bay was once laying on the ocean floor. Volcanic uplifts caused it to rise and now it is occupied by sea lions, land iguanas, and flightless cormorants. It is a great place to enjoy some free time on the beach or the guide may suggest a hike.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day Three - Land Iguana.

Elizabeth Bay & Moreno Point

AM:  This visitor site is visited by panga only as the park authorities have no authorized landing to protect the island. While in the panga you can appreciate a large abundance of marine life that can be seen in the clear waters. It is great for snorkeling.

PM:  The beautiful rocky shores of Moreno Point offers a plethora of birds to be seen. It is truly a birders delight. The main attraction is the coast lagoons where white-tipped sharks can be seen and the panoramic views of Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanoes cannot be missed.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day Four - White-tipped Reef Sharks.

Charles Darwin Research Station & Santa Cruz Highlands

AM:  The Charles Darwin Research Station is one of the Galapagos Island’s most important sites for visitors. It is a research facility that has an extensive collection of Galapagos plant life specimens carefully preserved and also acts as a biological research station and active breeding center operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. Their biggest conservation efforts are to one day eliminate all invasive and non-native plants and animals destroying endemic species within the islands.

PM:  The highlands are located in the northern part of Santa Cruz and can reach elevations up to 1500 meters. This area is rich with hills, ferns, volcanoes, and wildlife. A great contrast to the molten lava hardened beaches and rocky areas of other islands already seen. It is home to giant tortoises, mockingbirds, finches, and many other species.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day Five - Charles Darwin Research Station Giant Tortoises.

AM:  South Plaza is one of the smallest islands with a visitor site, but is home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. It has a large population of Sesuvium plants like the prickly pear cactus tree that is an important source of food for the land iguana. Just a few years ago mice were finally eradicated from the island, helping the population of land iguanas grow healthily once more. The amazing colors of the turquoise waters against the black lava create a setting for amazing photography opportunities.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'A' Day Six - Visiting South Plaza.

6 Day - Central, Southern & Eastern Islands

itinerary map

PM:  Santa Fe is home to the endemic Santa Fe iguana. The island was created by a volcanic uplift that now hosts a forest of Opuntia and Palo Santo trees. It is a picturesque island with two different trails, one leading to a scenic viewpoint and the other leading to a small beach. Giant tortoises were once native here but went extinct after pirates and sailors took them aboard as a source of food.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'B' Day One - Santa Fe Island.

Suarez Point & Gardner Bay/Osborn Islet

AM:  This is a phenomenal site where you will get to see many of Española Island's endemic species. The trail will pass by the only Waved Albatross breeding site in all of Galapagos. If you are lucky you might see a young albatross take off for its first flight for up to five years at sea. Older birds stay at sea for months at a time, only coming back to breed. They have the same mate for life and will meet each other each year, only here to reproduce. Other species that can be seen are marine iguanas that stay brightly colored year-round, Galapagos doves, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds, and Darwin finches.

PM:  This white sandy beach is home to a large colony of sea lions and incredibly blue and turquoise waters. Three different finches can be seen, as well as the Española mockingbird. Over time, the mockingbird must have been offered water or food from tourists and now they have no fear of walking on your things or landing very close to you. It is so important not to feed or touch the animals. It can disrupt their normal behaviors and threaten their future.

Ocean Spray's 6-Day Itinerary 'B' Day Two - Española Island.

Interpretation Center, Galapaguera & Lobos Island/Kicker Rock

AM:  The Interpretation Center has been open to the public since 1998, offering extensive knowledge about the history of the Galapagos. San Cristobal is also the island where Charles Darwin first landed on. It is now home to the capital of Galapagos and houses many government offices, as well as part of the Ecuadorian Navy. Giant tortoises are bred at the Galapaguera and roam in a semi-natural habitat created by the center.

PM:  Lobos Island is aptly named after the many sea lions that reside here resting and playing along the rocky shores. It is also home to many different birds like pelicans, frigate birds and their nests, yellow warblers, and more. 8-Day East Itinerary

Visit nine Galapagos Islands, embarking in San Cristobal, heading south to Floreana, then touring around the central islands of Santa Cruz and Bartolome. Head north to the famed birding island of Genovesa then visit Santiago Island, North Seymour and Mosquera Islet before disembarking at Baltra Island.

Route map of Ocean Spray Galapagos small ship cruise 8-day East itinerary, visiting San Cristobal, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Bartolome, Genovesa, Santiago, North Seymour, Mosquera Islet and Baltra islands.

Arrive at San Cristobal in the morning and be met by Ocean Spray’s staff and transferred to the yacht. Take some time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing. In the afternoon, visit Lobos Island, an islet about an hour away from San Cristobal. Blue-footed boobies nest here seasonally, and in recent years frigatebirds have begun to nest here as well. Sea lions are abundant, as are marine iguanas. It is a very calm and tranquil site with beautiful views of Kicker Rock off in the distance. Kicker rock is one of the most extraordinary sites in the Galapagos Islands, made of two eroded volcanic cones that tower over the sea at about 345 feet in the middle of the open water. It is a nesting place of sea birds and a nice spot to take pictures while the vessel circumnavigates around the rock.

lunch, dinner

This morning, explore Pitt Point on San Cristobal on the easternmost side of the Galapagos Islands. It is also one of the only places that red-footed boobies, blue-footed boobies and Nazca’s can be found all at the same place. The visitor site with formations of old volcanic rock is profoundly unique and the hike to the top of the site provides incredible views of the surrounding area. Later, visit Witch Hill and a popular beach with powdery white sand and turquoise waters, a joy to swim and snorkel in. Spot tropical fish beneath the surface and occasional sea lions may stop by or they’ll be snoozing on the shore. On a dinghy ride, explore the many crevices in the eroding rocks, leaving you awestruck by the sheer power of erosion.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today, land on a beach and head to Post Office Bay where 18th century whalers once placed a wooden barrel for use as an unofficial mailbox. The custom continues to this day with Galapagos visitors. So, don’t forget your postcards, and don’t be surprised if the postcard arrives to its destination before you even get home!

This afternoon, head to Comorant Point, where two beaches can be visited and flamingoes can be seen wading through brackish lagoons looking for shrimp, food that gives them their bright and vibrant colors. One of the beaches appears green because of olivine crystal. The other is appropriately called Flour Beach for its powdery white color, made from fine pulverized coral. Later you may snorkel near Devil’s Crown, where amazing volcanic structures have been submerged under the water’s surface. Hundreds of different colorful fish species can be found among the coral reefs. Rays, sea turtles, hammerhead sharks and sea lions are also common visitors. This is an underwater spectacle that cannot be missed.

This morning’s point of interest is only accessible by boat with a guide: Black Turtle Cove on the north side of Santa Cruz Island is a shallow inlet surrounded by mangroves that provide natural protection for a variety of marine life and attracts the vulnerable juveniles of many species. Below the surface of the water, search for both black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, golden cow-nose rays, spotted eagle rays and an occasional hammerhead shark. Watch pelicans and boobies hunt, diving gracefully into the water.

Spend the afternoon visiting Bartolome Island, home of the famous Pinnacle Rock. A volcano cone formed when magma was expelled by an underwater volcano. The sea cooled the hot lava and as it exploded from contact, the pieces formed together a huge rock made of layers of basalt. There is also a beach where a small population of green sea turtles nest. Galapagos penguins gather and swimming affords beautiful sights of colorful schools of fish and curious sea lions. Of all the islands, this may be the most photographed.

Begin today on Genovesa Island, a horseshoe-shaped island formed by the eruption of a shield volcano with large slopes formed by gradual lava flows. It is known as Bird Island due to the wide variety of birds that can be seen here. The only reptile on the entire island is the marine iguana and it is one of the very few places red-footed boobies gather in one large mass. Later visit Darwin Bay, which is the result of a caldera side collapsing after years of erosion. Look for the commonly seen red-footed boobies, for over 20,000 red-footed boobies are estimated to be living in the trees and bushes of Genovesa.

In the afternoon, explore El Barranco, better known as Prince Phillip’s Steps. This steep and rocky path leads up to a cliff with a marvelous view. There is also a palo santo forest that is home to nesting red-footed boobies, short-eared lava owls, Galapagos storm petrels, Galapagos doves and other birds.

This morning, visit Epumilla Beach and Buccaneer Cove. This cove is known for excellent snorkeling opportunities and was once a refuge for British buccaneers or pirates. The underwater formations are amazing and many different species of fish gather here. Of Santiago Island, Darwin once noted that land iguanas were thriving quite well since there was no place to even pitch a tent. The island was a good source of salt, water and food for whalers and buccaneers passing. There was a salt mine inland that was used to salt fish and tortoise meat. Land iguanas used to populate the island but are now extinct here.

The afternoon visit is to Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island. Enjoy a hike over a dry trail known for being a hangout for curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to the coastline where you will visit the gorgeous tide pools and grottos that are full of fauna. Observe the shy Galapagos fur sea lions and enjoy an opportunity to snorkel at Egas Port beach.

Today visit North Seymour Island, named after English nobleman Lord Hugh Seymour. Formed by uplifted submarine lava, the island is home to a huge colony of approximately 2,500 land iguanas and large populations of sea lions, blue-footed boobies, common noddies and frigatebirds. Along the coast it is possible to see land and marine iguanas and the biggest colony of magnificent frigatebirds.

Spend the afternoon in the Highlands of Santa Cruz, a very interesting site due to the rich wildlife, hills, ferns, volcanoes and lava tubes present. Exploring the lava tubes is a surreal and unique experience. Here you can see all the different agricultural zones that are present in the Galapagos in one place. The variety of birds makes this a bird watcher’s delight.

This morning’s visit is to Mosquera Islet, located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour. It is a reef of rocks and coral (the result of an uprising) and a great white sand beach. Its narrowest width reaches about 197 feet and has an estimated length of 1,968 feet. In most of the perimeter there is a base of lava rocks, evidence of the lava uprising, except in the southwest side where the landing occurs. This island has one of the largest populations of sea lions. You can also observe several species of shorebirds and there have been occasional reports of orcas feeding on sea lions. After this final, short visit, you will be transferred to Baltra Island’s airport in time to catch your flight back to the mainland.

Transfers between the airport and the yacht; airport reception and assistance; accommodation; guided expeditions according to the itinerary; bilingual national park guide; cruise service officer; daily activity briefing; all meals and snacks, soft drinks and juices; captain’s welcome and farewell cocktail; use of sea kayaks, paddleboards and expedition gear (including wetsuits). Mask and snorkel are recommended to be brought with you for personal safety but disinfected ones on board are included for use at one’s own risk, or a new set can be pre-purchased and provided upon arrival.

8-Day West Itinerary

Visit nine Galapagos Islands, embarking in Baltra, cruising to Chinese Hat, Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz, South Plaza, Santa Fe, Espanola and ending at San Cristobal.

Route map of Ocean Spray Galapagos small ship cruise 8-day West itinerary, visiting Baltra, Chinese Hat, Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz, South Plaza, Santa Fe, Espanola and San Cristobal islands.

Arrive at Baltra airport in the morning and be met by Ocean Spray’s guides and transferred to the yacht. Take some time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing. In the afternoon, visit Chinese Hat, a small island located in the central area of Galapagos just off the southeastern tip of Santiago Island. Chinese Hat is named after its unique cone hat shape, formed from volcanic activity many years ago and the white coral sand beach is home to a colony of sea lions. Enjoy rare, up-close viewing of Galapagos wildlife and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock whose unique conditions can’t be found anywhere else.

Begin today on Isabela Island, the largest of all the Galapagos Islands and one of the few populated by humans. Isabela was formed by six different shield volcanoes that erupted continuously, eventually joining together to form one entire land mass. Look for unique wildlife such as the pink iguana and more wild tortoises than on any other island. Explore Vicente Roca Point by dinghy or snorkeling, as there is no landing site. Thanks to outsanding geological formations there is excellent viewing of birds such as blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, gulls, storm petrels and brown noddy terns. Look out for feeding frenzies from animals such as whales, dolphins, sea lions and marine birds diving. At times you may even see fur seals.

This afternoon, explore Espinosa Point on Fernandina Island with a great opportunity to see the Galapagos hawk. Land iguanas are found on the inner parts of the island near the volcanoes caldera and marine iguanas will nest on the coast during certain times of the year. There is only one visitor site to Fernandina, which may involve a hike or snorkeling opportunity, making the rest of the island unspoiled and in a most natural state. No foreign species have ever invaded Fernandina Island and therefore it is one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems. The volcano La Cumbre dominates the landscape with lava fields reaching the ocean, and the Cromwell Current flows to the west making the cold and nutrient-rich water an ideal habitat for the Galapagos penguin and flightless cormorant that nest here.

In the morning, visit Tagus Cove on the upper west part of Isabela Island. Tagus Cove was named after an English war ship that used to pass the islands in the 1800s and was a famous spot for pirates and sailors who inscribed their names and the names of the ship on the volcanic rock. There are many different characteristics of the island such as large volcanic rocks or small little balls of petrified rain. Enjoy a hike along a path that leads to Darwin Lake with a tuff cone.

Spend the afternoon south of Tagus Cove in Urbina Bay, which is an interesting site due to the uplifts of the island caused by volcanic and tectonic activity. When it rose, so did the corals and reefs that were under the surface. You can still see them although they are beginning to deteriorate due to air exposure. Keep an eye out for giant tortoises, land iguanas and flightless cormorants near the coast.

This morning, visit Elizabeth Bay and experience a series of islets, a lagoon and mangroves. The mangroves provide a great place to observe many birds, and at the lagoon it is possible to see sea turtles resting and feeding. In the afternoon, visit Moreno Point on the southwestern point of Isabela Island. With striking black geological features, it is home to endemic species known only to the barren lava flows found here. Various activities are possible such as a hike, a panga ride to better see various seabirds and geological features, and snorkeling to view the vibrant underwater life.

In the morning, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, which conducts many different research projects and provides assistance to other researchers and governmental institutions and agencies, especially the Galapagos National Park. The research station also plays a big part in educating the community and public schools in Galapagos. There is also the longtime running giant tortoise restoration program that includes various stages of the giant tortoise from eggs, hatchlings and adults.

This afternoon, walk along a path designed to observe the hills, ferns, volcanoes and rich wildlife, leading up to the Santa Cruz Highlands. This area is home to giant tortoises, mockingbirds, Bahama ducklings, white-cheeked pintails, Darwin finches and many other species. Take a walk along lava tubes that are more than half a mile long, a unique and surreal experience.

This morning, head to South Plaza, one of the smallest islands with a visitor site and home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. It has a large population of sesuvium plants like the prickly pear cactus tree that is an important source of food for the land iguana. Just a few years ago mice were finally eradicated from the island, helping the population of land iguanas grow healthily once more.

In the afternoon, visit Santa Fe Island, home to the unique Santa Fe land iguana and the only place to find opuntia cactus. Giant tortoises were once native to this island but after the many years of pirates and buccaneers visiting the island and taking the tortoises aboard as food, they became extinct. Large numbers of sea lions can be found on the landing beach and Galapagos hawks can also sometimes be seen.

Today’s visit to Espanola Island highlights the southernmost island in the Galapagos, as well as the oldest (at an estimated four million years old). Because it is so far away from the other islands, it has the most endemic species, which provides wonderful opportunities for photography of endemic bird species and awesome landscapes created by millions of years of erosion. On Suarez Point, walk past the only waved albatross breeding site. If you are lucky you might see a young albatross take off for its first flight for up to five years at sea. Older birds stay at sea for months at a time, only coming back to breed. They have the same mate for life and will meet each other every year only here to reproduce. Other species that can be seen are marine iguanas that stay brightly colored year round, Galapagos doves, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropic birds and Darwin finches.

This afternoon, visit one of the best beaches in the Galapagos at Gardner Bay. The white sandy beach is home to a large colony of friendly and playful sea lions. Three different types of finches can be seen. The Espanola mockingbird is very friendly, but probably looking for food. The site is also where green sea turtles will come to nest their eggs between January and March.

In the morning, enjoy the Interpretation Center on San Cristobal Island, which has been open to the public since 1998 and offers extensive information about the history of Galapagos, ecosystems, geology, flora and fauna. Giant tortoises are bred here and roam about in a semi-natural habitat. Within the center are meeting rooms, interpretational panels, auditoriums, exhibits and much more. After this final visit, you will be transferred to San Cristobal Island’s airport in time to catch your flight back to the mainland.

In order to confirm this trip, a deposit of 20%  of the total trip cost  is required per person at time of booking. The balance of the trip price is due 90 days before the departure date. Special holiday payment and cancellation terms may apply. 6-Day South Itinerary

Visit six Galapagos Islands, embarking in Baltra, stopping by Santa Fe, heading south to Espanola, San Cristobal and Floreana, then returning north for a final visit to Santa Cruz Island.

Route map of Ocean Spray Galapagos small ship cruise 6-day South itinerary, visiting Baltra, Santa Fe, Espanola, San Cristobal, Floreana and Santa Cruz islands.

Arrive at Baltra Island in the morning. After passing through immigration and baggage claim, you will be met by Ocean Spray staff and transferred to the yacht. Take some time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing.

Today’s visit to Espanola Island places you on the southernmost island in the Galapagos, as well as the oldest (at an estimated four million years old). Other species that can be seen are marine iguanas that stay brightly colored year round, Galapagos doves, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropic birds and Darwin finches.

In the morning visit the Interpretation Center or Galapaguera on San Cristobal Island. The Interpretation Center was donated by the Spanish government and inaugurated by the Prince of Spain in 1998. This center focuses on the interaction between humans and the process of the “natural history laboratory,” demonstrating that a harmonious relation between human beings and nature is possible. Cerro Colorado (Galapaguera) is a new visitor site in the northeast part of San Cristobal Island and can now be reached in roughly one hour by road from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. On the trees and shrubs surrounding the site, you may see land birds like warbler, finches and mockingbirds, and on the trails, giant tortoises. They live there wild but in a protected area to assure their survival by sealing them off from introduced predators, like pigs and goats.

Later, visit Witch Hill and a popular beach with powdery white sand and turquiose waters that are a joy to swim and snorkel in. Spot tropical fish beneath the surface and occasional sea lions may stop by to swim with you or you’ll find them snoozing on the shore. On a dinghy ride you can explore the many crevices in the eroding rocks, leaving you awestruck by the sheer power of erosion.

This morning’s point of interest is only accessible by boat with a guide: Black Turtle Cove on the north side of Santa Cruz Island is a shallow inlet surrounded by mangroves that provide natural protection for a variety of marine life and attracts the vulnerable juveniles of many species. Below the surface of the water, you can see both black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, golden cow-nose rays, spotted eagle rays and an occasional hammerhead shark. Watch pelicans and boobies hunt here, diving gracefully into the water. After a morning dinghy ride here you’ll be transferred to Baltra Island’s airport in time to catch your flight back to the mainland.

6-Day West Itinerary

Visit six Galapagos Islands, embarking in Baltra and visiting Chinese Hat, heading west to Isabela and Fernandina, sailing to the central islands of Santa Cruz and South Plaza before ending back at Baltra.

Route map of Ocean Spray Galapagos small ship cruise 6-day West itinerary, visiting Baltra, Chinese Hat, Isabela, Fernandina Santa Cruz and South Plaza islands.

Arrive at Baltra airport in the morning, where you’re met by Ocean Spray’s guides and transferred to the yacht. Take some time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing. In the afternoon, visit Chinese Hat, a small island located in the central area of Galapagos just off the southeastern tip of Santiago Island. It is named after its unique cone hat shape, formed from volcanic activity many years ago. The visit offers rare, up-close viewing of Galapagos wildlife and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock that can’t be found in such a unique condition anywhere else. The islet is home to a colony of sea lions on the white coral sand beach.

Begin today on Isabela Island, the largest of all the Galapagos Islands and one of the few populated by humans. Isabela was formed by six different shield volcanoes that erupted continuously, eventually joining together to form an entire land mass. Look for unique wildlife such as the pink iguana and more wild tortoises than on any other island. Explore Vicente Roca Point by dinghy or snorkeling, as there is no landing site. Thanks to outstanding geological formations there is excellent viewing of birds such as blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, gulls, storm petrels and brown noddy terns.

In the morning, visit Tagus Cove on the upper west part of Isabela Island, named after an English war ship that used to pass the islands in the 1800s. This was a famous spot for many pirates and sailors who have left their names and the names of the ship inscribed on the volcanic rock. There are many different characteristics of the island from various volcanic activities such as large volcanic rocks or small little balls of petrified rain. Enjoy a hike along a path that leads to Darwin Lake with a tuff cone.

Spend the afternoon a bit south of Tagus Cove in Urbina Bay, which is an interesting site due to the uplifts of the island caused by volcanic and tectonic activity. When it rose, so did the corals and reefs that were under the surface. You can still see them although they are beginning to deteriorate due to air exposure. Keep an eye out for giant tortoises, land iguanas and flightless cormorants near the coast.

This morning takes you to Elizabeth Bay, where you can experience a series of islets, a lagoon and mangroves. The mangroves provide a great place to observe many birds and at the lagoon it is possible to see sea turtles resting and feeding.

This afternoon, walk along a path made to observe the hills, ferns, volcanoes and rich wildlife, leading you up to the Santa Cruz Highlands.

After this final visit, transfer to Baltra Island’s airport in time to catch your flight back to the mainland.

Go on a smaller vessel. Ours had 16 guests, which was a great size.  Only so many people can fit in a panga, and it is nice to have a small group on hikes and snorkeling activities.

General information

galapagos cruise ocean spray

Upon arrival, reception, and assistance at the airport, transfer from Baltra Airport to the M/C Ocean Spray. This site offers rare, up-close viewing of Galapagos wildlife and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock that can’t be found in such a unique condition anywhere else.

Activity

Because this visitor site is located on the western area of the island, the Cromwell Current provides cold water that carries many nutrients for both land and aquatic species, offering the chance to see amazing feeding frenzies. As one of the most pristine islands in the archipelago, Fernandina has never had a foreign species invade. It is also the most active island and farthest west.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Tagus-Cove

This site was one of their preferred pit stops while traveling the seas. The hike here will provide incredible views of the cove and on the other side the mangrove forest where the last 35 pairs of Mangrove finches thrive. Millions of years ago, Urbina Bay was once laying on the ocean floor. Volcanic uplifts caused it to rise and now it is occupied by sea lions, land iguanas and flightless cormorants. It is a great place to enjoy some free time on the beach or the guide may suggest a hike.

 alt=

While in the panga you can appreciate a large abundance of marine life that can be seen in the clear waters. It is great for snorkeling. The beautiful rocky shores of Moreno Point offer a plethora of birds to be seen. It is truly a birder’s delight. The main attraction is the coast lagoons where white-tipped sharks can be seen and the panoramic views of Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanoes cannot be missed.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Santa Cruz Highlands

The Charles Darwin Research Station is a facility that has an extensive collection of Galapagos plant life carefully preserved. The highlands are located in the northern part of Santa Cruz and can reach elevations up to 1500 meters. This area is rich in hills, ferns, volcanoes, and wildlife. A great contrast to the molten lava-hardened beaches and rocky areas of other islands already seen. It is home to giant tortoises, mockingbirds, finches, and many other species.

Rebecca Adventure Travel South-Plaza-Galapagos

South Plaza is one of the smallest islands with a visitor site but is home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. It has a large population of Sesuvium plants like the prickly pear cactus tree is an important source of food for the land iguana. Santa Fe is home to the endemic Santa Fe iguana. The island was created by a volcanic uplift that now hosts a forest of Opuntia and Palo Santo trees. It is a picturesque island with two different trails, one leading to a scenic viewpoint and the other leading to a small beach.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Origin Theory & Evolve - Gardner Bay

This is a phenomenal site where you will get to see many of Española Island’s endemic species. The trail will pass by the only Waved Albatross breeding site in all of the Galapagos. If you are lucky you might see a young albatross take off for its first flight for up to five years at sea. This white sandy beach is home to a large colony of sea lions and incredibly blue and turquoise waters. Three different finches can be seen, as well as the Española mockingbird.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Origin Theory & Evolve - San Cristóbal Island

The Interpretation Center has been open to the public since 1998, offering extensive knowledge about the history of the Galapagos. San Cristobal is also the island where Charles Darwin first landed on. It is now home to the capital of Galapagos and houses many government offices, as well as part of the Ecuadorian Navy. After this last visit, transfer to San Cristobal airport for your return flight to mainland Ecuador.

galapagos cruise ocean spray

Upon arrival, reception, and assistance at the airport, transfer from San Cristobal Airport to the M/C Ocean Spray. Lobos Island is aptly named after the many sea lions that reside here resting and playing along the rocky shores. It is also home to many different birds like pelicans, frigate birds and their nests, yellow warblers, and more. Within the small channel, the waters are very clear, making it easy to find sea turtles, sea lions, stingrays, and perhaps even white-tipped sharks.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Origin Theory & Evolve - Witch Hill

When arriving at Pitt Point, it will feel as if you’ve landed on an extraterrestrial planet. You can see the many different developments over time of how volcanic activity formed this island. Witch hill has awesome crevices and eroding rocks along the shoreline where you will first pass in a panga. Afterward be prepared to visit a powdery white sand beach with teal and turquoise waters.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Post-Office-Bay

Ask the Cruise Manager for one of our complimentary postcards to write a message and address it home. Leave it in the barrel used before by pirates and sailors. While you are there, see if there are any other postcards you can take home with you to send to fellow travelers who have already left their messages! Cormorant is an interesting visitor site. Two beaches can be visited here, just beyond the first beach is a saltwater lagoon with flamingos. One of the beaches looks green because of the olivine crystals, and the other is appropriately called Flour Beach because of the powdery white sand, made from the fine, pulverized coral.

Rebecca Adventure Travel The-Pinnacle

Black Turtle Cove is located on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. This shallow inlet is surrounded by mangroves and provides natural protection for a variety of marine life, attracting the vulnerable juveniles of many species. Pinnacle Rock is a volcanic cone formed by magma expelled by an underwater volcano. The sea cooled the hot lava and as it exploded from contact, the pieces formed together this huge rock of many, many layers of basalt.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Darwin-Arch

Darwin Bay used to be a shield volcano, now you can see where one of the sides of its caldera collapsed after hundreds of years of erosion. It is known for the wide variety of birds that can be seen. In English, this visitor site is also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps. It leads to a rocky path up a cliff that rewards guests with a remarkable view. It is also home to a Palo Santo forest that is home to the nesting red-footed boobies and other shorebirds.

Rebecca Adventure Travel ESPUMILLA BEACH

As the second Island Charles Darwin discovered, it was originally named after King James of England. Buccaneer Cove is an excellent opportunity for snorkeling and was once a refuge for passing sailors and pirates. Egas Port is also known as James Bay, home to quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. There are grottos and tide pools housing all kinds of different marine species. This is also one of the best snorkeling sites in the Galapagos.

Rebecca Adventure Travel Origin Theory & Evolve - North Seymour Island

The island was named after English nobleman Lord Hugh Seymour. Formed by uplifted submarine lava, the island is home to a huge colony of about 2,500 land iguanas and large populations of sea lions, blue-footed boobies, common noddies, and frigatebirds. The Highlands of Santa Cruz is a very interesting site due to the rich wildlife, hills, ferns, volcanoes and lava tubes present. Exploring the lava tubes is a surreal and unique experience.

Rebecca Adventure Travel MOSQUERA ISLAND GALAPAGOS

This visitor site is located between the islands of Baltra and North Seymour. It is a reef of rocks and coral (the result of an uprising) and a great white sand beach. Its narrowest width reaches about 160 meters and has an estimated length of 600 meters. After this last visit, transfer to Baltra airport for your return flight to mainland Ecuador.

galapagos cruise ocean spray

Upon arrival, reception, and assistance at the airport, transfer from Baltra Airport to the M/C Ocean Spray. This site offers rare, up-close viewing of Galapagos wildlife and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock that can’t be found in such a unique condition anywhere else. The island is named after the similarity of an Asian type of hat.

Rebecca Adventure Travel ESPINOZA POINT

If you like historic remnants, then you will enjoy finding what was left behind by pirates and sailors in the 1800s. This site was one of their preferred pit stops while traveling the seas. Millions of years ago, Urbina Bay was once laying on the ocean floor. Volcanic uplifts caused it to rise and now it is occupied by sea lions, land iguanas, and flightless cormorants. It is a great place to enjoy some free time on the beach or the guide may suggest a hike.

Rebecca Adventure Travel ELIZABETH BAY

The Charles Darwin Research Station is one of Galapagos Island’s most important sites for visitors. It is a research facility that has an extensive collection of Galapagos plant life carefully preserved and also acts as a biological research station and active breeding center operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. The highlands are located in the northern part of Santa Cruz and can reach elevations up to 1500 meters. This area is rich in hills, ferns, volcanoes, and wildlife.

South Plaza is one of the smallest islands with a visitor site but is home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. If you are lucky you might see a young albatross take off for its first flight for up to five years at sea. Older birds stay at sea for months at a time, only coming back to breed. This white sandy beach is home to a large colony of sea lions and incredibly blue and turquoise waters. Three different finches can be seen, as well as the Española mockingbird.

Formed by uplifted submarine lava, the island is home to a huge colony of about 2,500 land iguanas and large populations of sea lions, blue-footed boobies, common noddies, and frigatebirds.
